West,” curated by Graham Leader, will be presented at the Sara Nightingale Gallery in Water Mill on Saturday and Sunday. Highly regarded for his vibrant, evocative landscapes of the South Fork’s fields and beaches, Gingerich took a sabbatical from the East Coast last year and landed on a horse ranch in the high desert of Utah’s southwest corner. “My vision expanded in the vast space and the rusty red vulcanized landscape excited me. I welcomed the opportunity for verticality in my work,” described Gingerich. During his year there he painted every day and became an avid rider, bonding with a white fox trotter, Lucy. Gingerich’s adventures with Lucy ended with a serious riding accident on April 12 when Lucy lost her balance and fell on Jim, crushing his pelvis. Since the accident, Gingerich has undergone two major surgeries and is back at home in The Hamptons. He looks forward to making a full recovery after extensive rehabilitation and therapy. The public is invited to attend the opening, a community benefit reception, with wine and hors d’oeuvres on Saturday from 5 to 9 PM. The gallery will also be open on Sunday from noon to 5 PM. Guests are asked to make a suggested donation of $20 to help offset medical expenses. Prints of Gingerich’s “Lucy” will be available for sale.
