Dina Merrill and Ted Hartley hosted an intimate reception and special performance by singer Cole Rumbough to support the New York City Mission Society on August 25 in Southampton. The event, attended by about 75 people, raised $22,000 for the nonprofit, which help break the cycle of poverty for New York’s children, youth and families.

Project MOST Galler y in East Hampton presents “COMMUNITY,” an exhibition of new works by Nathan Slate Joseph, Anne Elisabeth Kiær, Evan Sebastian Lagache, HUSH, Martine Langatta, and Nicole Nadeau, on view through September 28. The show is curated by Julie Keyes and Pamela Willoughby. The public is invited to join for opening night, which includes a meet the artists reception, and special guests throughout the coming weeks. The show opens on Saturday with a reception from 5 to 7 PM. Guests will be able to meet the artists Nathan Slate Joseph and Evan Sebastian Lagache. Lagache, an American abstract expressionist artist, is a half-French, native New Yorker by way of Florida. Lagache comes from complicated lineage, but on his father’s side, he is the grandson of famed French conductor Michel Plasson. On his mother’s side, he’s the son of supermodel Debbie Dickinson and the nephew of Janice Dickinson. Nathan Slate Joseph, from New York City and Sagaponack, explores the painterly possibilities of steel in a body of work that fuses visceral sculpture with a nuanced palette of inorganic pigments. Joseph began to experiment with cast-off metal in the 1970s. His best-known works consist of squares of galvanized steel -- cut from industrial scraps -- which he coats in vibrant, saturated hues and then treats in acid. Joseph will be previewing his short film in the space starting at 4 PM on Saturday. The gallery space, next door to Mary’s Marvelous, has been evolving
all summer. Throughout the season the children’s exhibit that tells the Project MOST story was integrated with an exhibit of world-renowned artists that worked with the Project MOST children all summer, making art. In COMMUNITY, the space turns itself over to professional artists. The show brings together an eclectic group bound by a theme of social harmony and balance. Hush, from London, is an artist shaped by his lifestyle. Drawing on the elements of popular culture that shaped his past, he channels his history into visual art. His pieces are pastiches of youth culture, with elements graffiti, hip-hop, punk, rave, and minimalist design all existing with a single canvas. His compositions are nearly overwhelming, but the beautiful girls that recur in his works provide calm, stopping the images from descending into chaos. Artist Nicole Nadeau, from New York City, is known for working with materials that are often overlooked and taken for granted. As a fourth generation craftsman, trained in industrial design, her work blends manufactured and natural materials to create uncanny installations and sculptures. “I am making my latest work in a way that is joyfully incorporating flat color and multi-dimensional structure into sculptural paintings that have humor and a sense of real tactile surface that plays with light and shadows,” said New York City and Montauk based artist Martine Langatta. Her interests in creating her work build on the traditions of abstract expressionism and minimalism while
paying homage, yet playfully carving a path of her own. Artist Anne Elisabeth Kiær, from Norway and New York City, strives to get colors, lines, and forms to balance each other and give the viewer a visual harmony. “I love seeing a hint of a color beneath another,” said Kiær. “Covering up and exposing can go on through indefinite layers.” The show will also include three weekends of Artist Talks. On Sunday, there will be an Artist Talk brunch from noon to 4 PM with
photographer Tara Israel, presenting “The Baymen of L.I. & Hank Williams III.” Edwina Von Gal and a special surprise guest will be at the gallery on September 17, from 4 to 6 PM. Nadeau and Langatta with special guests will be there on September 24 and 25. A portion of the proceeds from COMMUNITY will be donated to Project MOST, an organization serving the East Hampton community, that raises funds for the Springs Seedlings and Project MOST After School programs.
Art/History/Amagansett
The Amagansett Free Library kicks off its annual Art/History/Amagansett conversation series with two programs held this weekend. The annual series of Saturday Conversations and Sunday Seminars explores the art, artists, and cultural institutions that are important to the East End. The first program, “The House That Jack Built,” focuses on the art, environment, and history of LongHouse Reserve, a utopia for living created by the world-renowned designer
Jack Lenor Larsen. The hour-long conversation features LongHouse Reserve Executive Director Matko Tomicic and Board President Dianne Benson in a discussion moderated by Joan Baum, NPR commentator, on Saturday at 6 PM. In the second program, held on Sunday at 6 PM, features Springs lawyer Carol Steinberg with a seminar, “Copyright and Collaboration 101.5,” which explores legal issues for artists. Precise yet intuitive, French’s infrastructure is crystalline, yielding to prisms of refracted light that evoke the dense natural surroundings of his Water Mill studio.

Independent Dining Roasted Acorn Squash With Seven Grain And Smokey Bacon Stuffing Ingredients (serves 4) 2 acorn squash 1/2 white onion (minced) 2 cloves of garlic (minced) 1/4 c chicken stock 2 tbsp olive oil 1 egg yolk 1/4 c milk 2 loaves of seven grain bread (cut into cubes) 8 strips of bacon (cooked crisp and chopped) 3 oz smoked gouda (shredded) 1 small handful of sage (chopped fine) 2 tbsp picked thyme 2 apples (diced) salt and pepper to taste

Method Start by heating the olive oil in a sauté pan over medium high heat. Sweat the onions and garlic until they're soft and translucent. Add the crisped chopped bacon into the pan along with the picked thyme. Cook for another minute to heat all ingredients. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature for 10 minutes. In a large mixing bowl add the rest of the ingredients along with the cooked onions, garlic and bacon. Mix together and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Cut your acorn squash in half and remove all the seeds and stringy flesh. Fill each half of squash with a sizeable portion of the stuffing then bake at 375 degrees for 75 minutes.
