Gere Honored
Independent/Jessica Mackin
Richard Gere By Miles X. Logan
Locals are used to seeing Richard Gere, his wife Carey Lowell and his
son, Homer walking about in Sag Harbor. The amicable family leads a quiet life amidst the hoopla that is the Hamptons. Gere will step into the local limelight on Saturday when he will receive the Hamptons International Film Festival’s Golden Starfish Award for Lifetime Achievement in Acting at Guild Hall. Gere burst on the scene in 1977 with a riveting performance in Looking For Mr. Goodbar with Diane Keaton and has starred in a string of hits since. The award will be presented during the festival’s “Conversation With Richard Gere,” a discussion with Mr. Gere about his life and career, moderated by the Festival’s Honorary Chairman, Alec Baldwin. The event will feature a montage highlighting Mr. Gere’s screen appearances. Among his best known performances are roles in Pretty Woman, American Gigolo, An Officer and a Gentleman, Chicago and most recently Arbitrage. The

festival will also present a special screening of Days of Heaven, Gere’s first starring role. Gere is a dedicated advocate for human rights with organizations that include The International Campaign for Tibet, Survival International and Healing the Divide. He also created The Gere Foundation, which supports the cultural preservation of Tibet and the Tibetan people. “Richard Gere’s outstanding body of work speaks for itself. Richard’s phenomenal talent and
social activism has showcased his passion and heart. We are thrilled to present him with the Golden Starfish Award for Lifetime Achievement in Acting,” said Karen Arikian, Executive Director of the Hamptons International Film Festival. Past honorees of the Golden S t a r f i s h Aw a r d f o r L i f e t i m e Achievement in Acting are Gena Rowlands, Vanessa Redgrave, Joan Allen and Alec Baldwin. Saturday’s event is sponsored by Capital One.
Welcome To The Twentieth Anniversary . . .
The Hamptons International Film Festival turns 20 this year, and so does The Independent. Both of us have a lot to be proud of. The HIFF launched the career off dozens of stars and featured scores of Oscar-winning films. The Independent earned hundreds of awards for our hard-hitting news, arts and entertainment coverage, and investigative reporting. Our guide is designed to be a companion while you traverse your way around the Hamptons during this fabulous weekend. Take it to the movie theaters, read it while you’re waiting on line or grabbing a bite. It’s a fun read. If you are visiting for the first time, be sure to take a few minutes to visit our pristine beaches, protected farms, and historic structures. They are what make the Hamptons a unique, world-class destination. As for The Independent, we’re here, and we’ll be here every week. Best of all, our publication is free – pick one up on the newsstands or visit www.indyeastend.com to read the paper in its entirety.

The East End will be bustling this weekend, and with good reason. For movie buffs, it’s like going to heaven. It’s safe to say there’s something for everyone at this year’s Hamptons International Film Festival, a menu so varied that even the most diverse appetites will find something to love. “I’m really psyched about seeing a bunch of different kinds of new films -- new perspectives on history, war and peace, relationships, people’s passions and simple spiritual lessons documentaries too -- all in absolutely, overwhelming, rapid succession!” East Hampton Town Councilman Dominick Stanzione enthused. “It jump-starts my brain, rocks me! Makes me think. I like it when that happens.” The featured films are somewhat predictable. David Chase, the creator of “The Sopranos,” makes his feature film directorial debut with Paramount Vantage’s Not Fade Away, which will close this year’s festival on Sunday. The film is a regular on the film festival circuit –next stop is the New Orleans Film Festival and it will be shown in Philadelphia the following week. It was shown at the New York Film Festival and will be featured at the Austin Film Festival as well. Clearly, the producers are looking for maximum exposure before a December release and probable Oscar push. It’s a safe choice for the HIFF but not much of a coup. The film is about a moment in time in the sixties when the Rolling Stones appear on television and three best friends from the suburbs of New Jersey decide to form a rock band. The film reunites Chase with ”Sopranos” star James Gandolfini. John Magaro, Jack Huston, Will Brill,
Bella Heathcote, Brad Garrett and Christopher McDonald also star. Similarly, Ben Affleck’s Argo has been mining the film festival circuit for as much pre-release publicity as possible. It received good reviews at the Toronto Film Festival last month and was a hit at Telluride in August. Argo is a political thriller. Affleck directs and star along with John Goodman, Alan Arkin, and Bryan Cranston. George Clooney is one of the producers, and the film clearly has Oscar aspirations. The Opening Night film, is, somewhat surprisingly, a documentary, but one with creds. Love, Marilyn was an award winner at the Toronto Film Festival and makes its U.S. premiere in East Hampton. It is directed by Liz Garbus, and features a huge cast of Hollywood stars. It will be released on HBO next year. Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro and Jennifer Lawrence star in The Silver Linings Playbook, a film based on a novel by Matthew Quick. De Niro’s dad, an artist, lives in Montauk. HIFF nailed a prestigious World Premier, The Girl. The film stars Toby Jones as Alfred Hitchcock and Sienna Miller as Tippi Hendren and focuses on the legendary director’s fascination – make that obsession – with the star of Marnie and The Birds, two of his best films. It is based on the book by Donald Spoto and it comes from the HBO studio. The strength of the HIFF has always been the quirky films and documentaries that may not become huge commercial success but warrant attention. There is also a selection of films about the area, as well as films made by local producers. Sag Harbor resident Terry George offers his Whole Lotta Sole film up to festival audiences; it’s a comedy starring Brendan Fraser. A rarity nowadays – a good old western, is also featured: Dead Man’s Burden, from director Jared Moshé. Justin Long is wonderful in Ted Koland”s wacky comedy, Lumpy; Boxing aficionados will enjoy The Good Son: The Life Of Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini; A Fabrica (The
Family), is about a mother who risks everything to smuggle a cellphone to her imprisoned son. Other highlights include Mission Of Mermaids, a beautiful film directed by Susan Rockefeller; locals, of course, will want to see Montauk, directed by Charlie Kessler. This year’s Golden Starfish Award competition films in the Narrative category are The Almost Man, directed by Martin Lund; Dead Man’s Burden, directed by Jared Moshé; La Demora, directed by Rodrigo Plá; Kuma, directed by Umut Dag; and Lore, directed by Cate Shortland. The Golden Starfish Award competition films for Documentary are Bay Of All Saints, directed by Annie Eastman; Colombianos, directed by Tora Mårtens; El Huaso, directed by Carlo Guillermo Proto; Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet directed by Jesse Vile, and Rising From Ashes, directed by T.C Johnstone. The Golden Starfish Award competition films for Short Film are Abigal directed by Matthew James Reilly; Bydlo, directed by Patrick Bouchard; Dance Music Now directed by Johan Jonason; The Return, directed by Blerta Zeqiri; and The Curse, directed by Fyzal Boulifa. Stargazers will have plenty of eye candy this week. Among those expected to attend the festival are Sag Harbor’s own Richard Gere, Mike Nichols, the ubiquitous Alec Baldwin, Nathan Lane, Stevie Nicks, Alan Cumming, Trudie Styler, Sienna Miller, hometown gal Melissa Leo, Terry George, Steve Van Zandt, and David Chase.

HIFF: Where To Eat
By Rick Murphy
You just finished watching a documentary: The Making Of A Documentary, and you have 20 minutes before your next movie, A Documentary About The Making Of A Documentary, begins and it will be the first time it will be shown east of the Shinnecock Canal and south of Sag Harbor. One little problem – in your quest to view as many important films as you can, you’ve neglected to eat. You don’t want to be the star of Starving In The Hamptons: A Documentary. Here are a few places that can get you in and out in a hurry: A lot of visitors don’t realize we have an authentic pizzeria right in East Hampton Village that is as good as any Brooklyn has to offer. It’s Fierro’s (631-324-5751), right across the alley from Waldbaums on Newtown Lane. There are a terrific variety of pies by the slice, hot and cold heroes, and a lot of stuff you wouldn’t expect, like gasp (!) healthy salads and wraps, and even paninis. There are tables inside, or get it to go. Across the street next to the school, hidden down the alley, is an authentic
Chinese take-out place, Chinatown (631-324-1999). If you’re staying at the Dutch Motel, Chen’s (631-3290333) is right next-door, and the take-out is excellent. Best Taste (631-267-8801) next to Brent’s in Amagansett, is another standout Chinese take out, and if you’re going out to Montauk, don’t forget Brent’s (631-267-3113): it’s the best selection of hot to-go lunches and dinners around. Breakfast sandwiches and burgers are great, too. The epicenter for the HIFF crowd is, as always, John Papas Café (631-324-5400), in the west end of the parking lot behind Main Street. There’s lots of seating, breakfast, lunch and dinner, to stay or take with you. Say hello to Alec if you see him. If you head north on Newtown Lane and turn left at the railroad tracks after watching Rocky Vs. Rambo: This Time It’s Personal, a classic Italian “Pork” store awaits with the authentic Italian heroes, great salad (try the antipasto), prepared foods like lasagna (and, of course veggie lasagna) cold drinks, and great prices. Villa Italian
Hamptons • Insiders Guide REAL ESTATE Film ARTS Festival & ENTERTAINMENT IN THE NEWS
Specialties (631-324-5110) also has a special hero each day that can be shared by two people, or maybe even three smallish leading men. Mary’s Marvelous (631-3241055) just opened in its newest locale on Newtown Lane. Find all the favorites from their Amagansett home base, including delicious home baked treats, and hearty sandwiches and soups for lunch. I f i t ’s b a g e l s y o u w a n t , Goldberg’s (100 Pantigo Place, 631-329-8300) east of East Hampton Village, is a treat, and also offers hot breakfast. There’s another one in Southampton, at 819 County Road 39, north of the village. Call 631-204-1046 to place an order. If you’re commuting between East Hampton and Southampton, don’t pass by Twice Upon A Bagel (631-537-5553) at 358 Montauk Highway in Wainscott, across from the post office. The bagels are great, there are a variety of spreads, and the baked goodies are to die for. Speaking of Southampton, La Parmigiana (631-283-9752), on Hampton Road, a short walk from the theater, is another authentic Italian restaurant with pizza to go – or, sit down and grab a hot meal and have a glass of wine or two. Sip and Soda (631-282-2800), right down the block, is the quintessential luncheonette, and has been for
generations. And yes, Gary Cooper ate there. (Note for Movie Trivia Quiz: he’s buried in Southampton.) The Jobs Lane Deli (631-2886552) is a diagonally across the street from the movie theater, and the small place makes a big sandwich, so wear something baggy over that black turtleneck if you want to smuggle one into the theater to watch Star Wars: The First Sequel To The Prequel. In Westhampton Beach Hampton Coffee Company (631-288-4480) on 194 Mill Road is a filmgoers paradise. The coffee is the best around, there’s fresh baked muffins and scones, a smoothie bar, and breakfast and lunch ser ved all day. There’s another in Watermill (631-726-2633) at 869 Montauk Highway. Look for their mobile unit as well. In Sag Harbor The Corner Bar (631-725-9760) is right across the street from Bay Street Theatre. The burgers are legendary, the drinks flow, and the patrons are friendly. Just down the block is Conca D’Oro (631-735-3167), across from the historic Sag Harbor movie theater. Just south, on Madison Street, sits Il Capuccino (631-725-2747), a sit down Italian restaurant that has been doing it for 49 years. They should make a movie about the garlic rolls – they are that good.

Roth Honored Saturday By Miles X. Logan
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will co-present a special evening honoring the career of costume designer Ann Roth during The 20th Hamptons International Film Festival. Special guests include Ann Roth, Nathan Lane, and Mike Nichols with CNN correspondent Alina Cho serving as host and moderator. The celebration will take place at Guild Hall in East Hampton on Saturday. Roth will receive The Hamptons International Film Festival’s Golden Starfish Award for Lifetime Achievement in Costume Design. With six decades in the film industry and over 100 film credits to her name, the legendary costume designer has earned numerous accolades for her diverse career, including an Oscar for The English Patient (1996). Well-known for the depth of her creative vision and her rigorous attention to detail, Roth has designed costumes for a wide variety of genres and historical periods, with films as varied as The Day of the Locust (1975), Hair (1979), The
World According to Garp (1982), The Birdcage (1996), and Julie & Julia (2009). Roth is noted for her ability to collaborate with actors and directors in creating indelible characters, and has worked repeatedly with such artists as Mike Nichols, Stephen Daldry, Anthony Minghella, Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, Robin Williams, Nicole Kidman and Daniel DayLewis. In addition to her four Academy Award nominations, Roth has received four Tony Award nominations for her costume designs for the stage. This special event will be both a celebration of Roth’s career and an examination of her work and craft, featuring film clips and in-depth discussions of her creative process. “We are honored that in our festival’s anniversary year we are able to recognize and salute such an extraordinary woman as Ann Roth,” said Executive Director Karen Arikian. “She epitomizes the inspirational creative talent that we have endeavored to present to our audiences at HIFF for the last 20
Ann Roth
years.” “It is, of course, a tremendous honor to be recognized for one’s work by one’s peers” said Roth.”I gratefully thank both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences and The Hamptons International Film Festival and I commend the festival on its steely optimism in waiting
until 2012 to bestow such an honor on me.” In celebration of Roth’s career, a selection of her original sketches and renderings will be exhibited during the week of the festival. The exhibition will feature hand-drawn works created and curated by Roth.
