FASHION HUNTER :
AMBRIA MISCIA
y ashley o’connell b In NYC, the variety of jobs are
endless. Some people choose to sit in dreary offices all day, watching the sunlight change. Others in New York City are out prowling the streets and apartments for sellable garments, pushing rolling racks of colorful new sundresses down the breezy avenues, and interacting with all types of society. Ambria Miscia chose the latter of the two and has a job that has girls chomping at the bit for. Her coveted career? Manager at “Second Time Around” in SoHo which just so happens to be featured on its own reality show called “Fashion Hunters” on Bravo. It is a consignment shop that buys gently used or never worn garments and overstocked goods and re-sells them. They scavenge the city and hold swaps to find valuable hidden gems, like Birkin bags and Burberry blouses. It is often, at some point, every little girl who adores fashions’ dream, to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology in Chelsea. Including myself, and I indeed continued on to do so. Ambria knew she wanted to attend college in the city that boasts an actual “Fashion Avenue,” but she was uncertain, so she toured Parsons, New School and FIT to get a real feel of the places. And the winner is? FIT. Her recommendation on why she chose the school for potential students? “The staff was very friendly and warm and provided a lot of info and spoke about the real life experiences they could help you achieve.” One of the first things she learned moving to NYC? Know where you are going, or you seem like a fanny pack wearing, subway map holding tourist. “I got into a cab and said I’m going to midtown, and the guy is like, lady, you gotta know where you’re going,” Ambria laughs. Having a plan, and always knowing a destination, she says is amazing, because it keeps you focused. Aside from that? Flippy miniskirts and subway air can lead to Marilyn Monroe-esque moments, and even though you may want to rock those five inch Choos, the cobblestones in the Meatpacking require cute flats, unless you want to be sprinted off to Lenox Hill Hospital, no pun intended. One might think that re-selling clothing isn’t as glamorous as strutting the runway or as interesting as being a designer’s right hand man (or woman), but it can be. A lot of clients are making big changes in their lives - moving, divorce, etc. They are often nervous and just want to get rid of the garments. That red sundress she wore in the south of France with her cheating ex? Yea, she’d like that out of her sight - and life. Ambria turns the old, the bad, and the whatever
memories into cash, for people who don’t have the time. “I like building a relationship with the clients, making them happy” she claims. Sounds like a win-win situation for all. NYC is definitely a place of night owls, where the stilettoed and silk-sheathed don’t hit the clubs until the AM. However, Ambria prefers to get some shuteye and actually goes to bed by 10 AM, unlike some of us who never go to bed and don dark sunglasses even on rainy days. “I am a day person, and you can’t have a good culture and career when you are out all night,” she claims as her reason for usually shunning the glitzy vodka soaked streets of SoHo and the Meatpacking.

more attitude (at times) then Sammi “Sweetheart” from Jersey shore. The downtown dames are usually more flippant; quick to sign papers and then not understand when they are paid for their goods. If they are not educated in the consignment business, Ambria says, it makes it harder. Harder than trying to make your foot fit into a pair of two sizes too small Prada pumps - wait, is that hard? In one episode, the crew travels out to the Hamptons. Ambrias take on the Hamptons? “Love it. Reminds me of Martha’s Vineyard, but with more money and celebrities.” The best part, she says, is that the restaurants, high end shops, etc. all are curated in a competitive way to make those from NYC feel on par with their normal lifestyles, just in a more relaxed, ocean breeze in your hair and sand in your shoes setting. Another good aspect? Everyone dressed to impress. They didn’t just throw on any old flip flops but made an effort, hence being in the Hamptons. Of course, reality TV has its moments. From being downright scripted in your face glass throwing to “oh, is he the one?” Ambrias take on being on reality TV? Awesome. Sometimes you try to tell people about your day, and they look at you like you’ve had one too many at happy hour. Ambria, however, can just say “look for me on Bravo on Tuesdays!” Refreshing, to be able to show someone how things truly work and not just have them take your word for it! The con? When she first moved to NYC, she just arrived from LA after living out of a suitcase. As any lady who takes more then two seconds to dress, this would come as a full on panic attack. Shoes with this dress?! Not those! “I had to borrow so many clothes - and I was on a fashion show!” She laments. From the looks of it, though, this fashion hunter can hunt for the best bargains while still keeping - and looking - cool no matter what the scenario!

So what does she do in her down time? “Browsing,” she immediately rattles off as one of her favorite ways to pass the time. In a city filled with stores brimming with $5,000 purses, one can’t always shop no matter how much you convince yourself that your AMEX still isn’t maxed. By browsing she can scope out the latest trends, see what is and isn’t selling, and people watch. “I love reading blogs, but they are not always accurate on ‘what’s hot,’” she says. By pounding the pavement, she can verify. That aside, she does enjoy networking and mingling at gallery openings and going for dinner and after work drinks with industry people. After all, connection is key. Living in the LES, this life is just a stroll out her front door. Stranded on a desert island (more like struck by the evil fashion fairy), and you have one designer to wear for the rest of your life? “Tom Ford,” Ambria replied, without skipping a beat. “I trust him. He wouldn’t let me blend in, but I’d still look appropriate for work and for a date.” His impeccable craftsmanship, and his sexy yet sophisticated and classic looks are like a blend of Chanel, Givenchy and D&G, she claims. “Fresh” clothes are preferred, although she does have a place in her heart for vintage gowns and Chanel. Although, who doesn’t love Chanel, vintage or new? Funky 80’s Versace pieces also appeal to her fashion appetite. As for the clientele, customers and sellers range from uptown ladies to downtown dames, the young and the ‘older’, the wealthy and the spend-my-whole-paycheck crowd. When buying merchandise from the uptown ladies, they are more professional and knowledgeable about how the business exactly works, but can have

I gave them wine last year. Should I just re-gift this candle? Everyone likes socks, right? There is a solution to these typical holiday giving predicaments. Give gifts that will benefit the person receiving them just as much as the local organizations you can buy them from. For the relative who is always looking for something to do, give a gift membership to an art museum. For the friend who loves her coffee, give a one of a kind ceramic mug. And for the friend who has just moved into a new place, a small painting for the bare walls of his apartment. This all may sound too simple, too good to be true, but it’s all at your fingertips. The relative always looking for something to do can be gifted a membership to the Parrish Art Museum. A membership grants them access to the many exhibitions at the Museum in Southampton, not to mention discounted admission to the posh events they put on. The best part, the new Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill opens next fall and this membership will both contribute to opening its doors and get you inside! To give this amazing access pass to the arts call Melissa Gatz at 631-283-2118 ext 49 or visit www.parrishart.org. For the friend who loves her coffee, but has everything, give her a hand made ceramic mug. Celedon, the clay art guild in Water Mill, will host their holiday sale through December 19. All of the works are handmade by the talented potters of the Clay Art Guild and make exquisite gifts. The gallery is open on weekends only, so schedule your shopping wisely and don’t miss out! For more information on what the Clay Art Guild has to offer visit their website at www.hamptonsclayart.org. And for the friend with a new apartment and sad blank walls, gift a small painting that they will have for years. The South Street Gallery in Greenport will host its annual “10x10 Art Show and Sale” fundraiser from December 2 through December 31. The proceeds from this exhibition will benefit The North Fork Environmental Council. This means your thoughtful gift of an original artwork will also be a donation to the health of your local environment. Visit www.thesouthstreetgallery.com to find out how you can snag one of these artworks. With all of these solutions you can hold off on that regift. From the North Fork to the South Fork, there are many ways to support your local community while giving unique gifts that will be greatly appreciated. Happy Giving! singer. I first heard her sing at an event at Wolffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack. Alex has that sultry sound much like that of Lena Horne or Sade. She’s so comfortable in front of the audience, it’s like she was born to do this! No matter if she’s singing ballads, jazz or R & B, she is smooth and effortless. There’s also something about Alex that pulls you in and takes you on a journey. Everyone looked mesmerized as her voice flowed like water from the falls. Alex is the daughter of newscaster, Lori Stokes, and you will have a chance to meet them both on December 9 and 10 at Gurney’s Inn from 7 to 9 PM and there is no cover charge. Hope to see you guys there! Just in time for the holidays, or any time of the year, is Robert Collier’s The Secret of the Ages which has changed so many lives. It’s that time of year that we celebrate the holidays surrounded by family, friends and food. Soon people will be looking to shed those holiday pounds. There’s one person who will inspire you and that’s Mr. Fitness 2011, John Odom. John won this title by votes he received on www.modelshealth.com and was very well deserved. He’s proportionate in his shape and as a personal trainer in Houston, John definitely practices what he preaches. John is also a fitness model and was the reigning Texas champion in the Muscle Mania Shows in the region. John would be the person I’d go to for advice on fitness and I asked him what has contributed to his success. He told me he owes everything he has done to his nutritionist, Ernesto Osorio. He believes your nutritionist is your most valuable asset. He has taken what he has learned from Ernesto and incorporated it into what he teaches his clients. “Ernesto is really gifted. He can make your body look different within two weeks,” states John. Ernesto is his best kept secret and has shown John what to eat and when to eat it. This is key when you’re looking to mold your body into a healthy form, both inside and out. John has a lot of photo shoots lined up for 2012 and has a goal to get his IFBB Pro Card. Keep your eyes opened because you’ll be seeing a lot more of him in 2012! There is a lot of talent out there and one you must see is Alex. Yes, just Alex, all you need is one word when it comes to this talented

THE WIZARd OF SPA
by laura anne pelliccio
Seasons Greetings from the SpaLaLaLaLaaa! I don’t know about you, but I am really looking forward to this holiday spa season. Peppermint tea pedicures, acai berry facials, warm cocoon-like body wraps, calming massages. It is no wonder why the Hamptons are such a great place to visit. Each year, I love to follow what promotions the spas are offering from Westhampton to Montauk. As the sun sets earlier, the classic white Christmas lights are carefully spread through each Hampton village, bringing on that holiday spirit. I have been working in this business going on fifteen years (OMG!) and can count on both hands how many massages I have actually treated myself to. My goal is to be able to call myself a “spagoer,” which is someone who frequents spa’s for wellness purposes. I quit smoking over 9 months ago and thought to myself, how much money did I spend on those sticks? Well, it’s time for me to put aside some funds to fulfill my dreams. Each month, or as often as I can, I treat myself to wellness. Whether it is a spa amenity pass at a fabulous resort, a well-deserved massage, or an authentic treatment from time to time. I always feel rewarded when I walk out of my spa day. Who says spas have to be expensive? Call your favorite spa and see what promotions they are offering and if they have specific days when they offer discounts. Sometimes just a day pass at a great fitness center can give you a yoga class followed by a eucalyptus steam bath, sauna, hot and cold plunges and all of the robes and towels you need to pamper yourself. This holiday season, treat yourself and a friend to a day at the spa because your mind, body and spirit are truly worth it. What’s HOT for the HOLIDAYS? •“wHet” is a top of the line nail polish, brought to you by the Me! Bath collection, a favorite of Oprah Winfrey! Some certified organic ingredients infused in this formaldehyde free polish, is executed as the “uber-urban and avante garde” in the industry. wHet was developed first for the advanced creative manicurist. It is remarkably beautiful and developed for that sassy woman who wants to make a lasting impression. Visit www.MeBath.com. • Acai Berry (ah-sai-ee) is the trend, oh yes it is! Harvested in the rain forests of Brazil, the Acai berry is found to be an effective immunity booster, a digestive aid, a body cleanser, and helps to improve the health of your organs! It is an excellent daily supplement. Want to try it on your skin? The high content, Acai Firming Mask by Eminence Organic Skincare is sure
to give you results that you will see working right away on the face and décolleté areas. Visit www.EminenceOrganics.com. • Purchase a series of microdermabrasion and laser hair removal treatments at the award-winning SpaUnique of Southampton. Get started now and be smooth and ready for summer! Visit www.SpaUnique.com. Faith Popcorn, most known for her motivational lectures as well as her spot-on predictions, spoke at the ISPA convention last month at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. ISPA is the largest spa conference in the world held annually in the states. The International Spa Association (www.experienceISPA.com) had several successful leaders conduct the daily seminars to educate all of us spa professionals fortunate enough to attend this outstanding event. Faith, who is also an East Hamptonite, gave her prediction and message for 2012. “Men are out. Women are in. Women have all the money. Women have all of the power. Get ready.” She also spoke about a new book she is writing. It was so refreshing to meet her as well as explore all of the vendors in the exhibit area. Also to network, take classes, indulge in healthy spa cuisine lunches and of course end each busy day with a visit to some of the most authentic spas on the Las Vegas Strip. Spa Recommendations? • Take a hot and cold bath plunge at Spa Qua in Cesar’s Palace in Las Vegas followed by an aromatherapy steam and sauna before visiting the Arctic room – a cold steam room where it snows! There is also a private “Barber Spa” where only men are allowed. • Visit The Bathouse at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas for an exceptional massage, followed by a warm or cool soak in the top class water amenities. • Visit the Exhale Spa at the Gansevoort Hotel in NYC’s Meatpacking District for some R&R, a cupping session with a Certified Acupuncturist to release back pain and issues in the lungs, followed by a Power C Facial with an on-staff licensed Aesthetician. You will have to experience this one for yourself!
