Wednesday, November 26 - Community Bible Church on Noyac Road in Sag Harbor offers a Thanksgiving service at 7 PM. All are welcome. - Assemblyman Fred Thiele’s office serves as a collection hub for the annual Toys for Tots program. Drop off new, unwrapped toys between 9 AM and 5 PM. Thiele’s office is located at 2302 Main Street, Suite A, Bridgehampton. Thursday, November 27 - Keeshan Real Estate and the East Hampton Town Recreation Department host the annual Turkey Trot -- Run For Fun to give all an appetite for the day ahead. Race check-in runs from 8 to 9:30 AM at the Montauk Chamber of Commerce. Run three or six miles. Categories for all ages are available. Free. Register through the town website.

Friday, November 28 - Marders presents its 39th annual open house 9 AM to 5 PM all weekend beginning today. Ring in the season with holiday cookies and cider in the Garden Shop. There will be live music, plus, of course, the wonders of the Snake Hollow Road, Bridgehampton, décor. - The Southold Historical Society will host its annual Candlelight Tour at the Society’s Maple Lane Museum Complex in Southold from 3 to 6 PM. All museum buildings will be decorated for the holiday season and open to the public. Farm and home craft demonstrations will take place in the various buildings, strolling musicians will be on the grounds and Santa will be visiting while refreshments are served. The annual tree lighting is at 5 PM in front of the Ann Currie-Bell House. - Skip the horror of Black Friday. Come to Guild Hall in East Hampton from 11

It’s not Christmas in East Hampton Village until – the Christmas tree lights up, of course. It’s been a tradition for as long as anyone can remember. And though names change, the place remains the same: 207 Main Street. That’s where you’ll find c/o Maidstone and The Living Room Restaurant. The light up ceremony will commence beginning at 4 PM on December 7. The event will feature festive activities such as live holiday music from the East Hampton High School choir, visits with Santa, cookie decorating, holiday refreshments, and more. Non-perishable food items will be collected for the East Hampton Food Pantry. There will also be a toy drive for Toys for Tots. The restaurant will open following the ceremony offering a special Swedish holiday dinner menu for $42 per person. The Good, The Bad, The Ugly The good news is there are some interesting films set to be released during the holiday season. The bad news is there are very few holiday-themed movies. In other words, don’t expect Miracle On 34th Street. Hell, we’ll be lucky if we get a Bad Santa. The Penguins Of Madagascar, due to be released this week, is an animated feature that needs no introduction. In this episode the penguins take on an evil villain hellbent on destroying the world, but then again, fans already know that. The fun is in the watching, and the kids will love it. Save if for the Saturday before Christmas when you really need them out of the house for the day. On the other side of the spectrum we have Monsters: Dark Continent, a sequel that sends more good men into the Infected Zone to fight hideously ugly creatures. Oh wait, here‘s a Ho Ho Ho Jolly Christmas themed movie: the tagline is

“The month of December is pretty dry until the Christmas Day flood.” Ok, we didn’t know that but the guess is we’ll find out. Don’t expect to see Wet Santa; do expect gruesome monsters in the catacombs of the pyramids hunting down the good guys – archeologists. Pyramid is released in early December. We heard all about it at the Hamptons International Film Festival – now see Wild for a third of the price. This is Reese Witherspoon Oscar hunting as a woman making an 1100-mile hunt to try and forget her troubled past. The director, Jean-Marc Vallée, scored with Dallas Buyers Club last year. It’s been a long time since we had a biblical epic – well, not really (think Noah) -- but a long time between good ones. Ridley Scott brings us Exodus: Gods and Kings, and it looks to be a good one or at the very least grandiose in the style of The Ten Commandments. Christian Bale plays some important biblical figure – oh wait, he plays Moses. Did we mention the film reminded us

of The Ten Commandments? Look for it December 12. Yes, we have a comedy sighting, and it just might be a good one. Chris Rock is back on the big screen in Top Five, which he wrote and directed. It’s about a character like, like, well, Chris Rock. Then there is Inherent Vice, a grim drugs and vice thriller set in the early 70s with grim actors like Joaquin Phoenix, Eric Roberts and Benecio Del Toro. We could have sworn we saw Reese in there somewhere, too, but it can’t be, she’s off hiking somewhere. The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies is due the week before Christmas, the second Peter Jackson trilogy based on Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings characters. For the love of Mordor may it be the last. And then we have our Oscar contenders: it’s fashionable to release your important film at the very end of the year so Academy voters will remember it when the ballots are filled out because after all, the typical Hollywood type has an attention span of five minutes. Clint Eastwood (Oscar winner) brings us American Sniper starring Bradley Cooper

(Oscar winner). It’s supposedly a true story about U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. Amy Adams (Oscar winner) plays the painter Margaret Keane in Big Eyes also starring Christoph Waltz (Oscar winner). Anyone see a pattern developing? Speaking of Oscar, Meryl Streep is in . . . WAIT! Breaking news! MERYL STREEP HAS JUST WON THE 2014 OSCAR!! AGAIN! And they haven’t even voted yet. She stars in Into The Woods, from Disney, a unique take on the classic Grimm fairly tales. Streep is magnificent. The cards were produced with the help of a friend of the Historical Society. These Claus Hoie images feature a view of Mulford Farm, the Hook Windmill, and Home Sweet Home in a winter sunrise. Proceeds benefit the education committee of the East Hampton Historical Society and the price is $25 for a box of 12 cards. There is nothing like local Bay Scallops. But for Thanksgiving or even Christmas dinner? Why not? It seems like this season has yielded a vintage crop in terms of numbers and sweetness – in fact, I think the sweetest in memory. (They are plump little devils this year, too!) I’ve been eating Bay Scallops since I was a little kid. My grandfather and uncle used to get them, and poppa would pull out his trusty folding knife and open a few right then and there. Yes, they are edible raw, and as sweet as can be. Granted, scallops aren’t considered holiday season fare, but they were in our house. They were free, which always came in handy when feeding a big family. They were abundant during the holiday season, and we tried to have them two or three times a week before the freeze set in.

One thing our family always adhered to -- don’t get crazy in the kitchen: serve them as simply as you can and let the natural flavor come through. I keep with the local theme, dicing up a yellow squash and a zucchini and some parsley and basil. Hopefully you still have some veggies and herbs in your garden, especially if you have a cold frame. Add maybe a few mushrooms for color and flavor. I’ll cook up a cup of tricolor rotini and a couple strips of bacon and put aside. In frying pan sauté a couple shallots and chopped garlic cloves in the bacon fat and a little olive oil until translucent. Dice up mushrooms and veggies and sauté for a couple minutes. Add twothirds cup white wine, one-half cup sherry, the herbs, and lemon juice. Rinse the scallops, pat dry, and mix

them in to the pan. Sprinkle pepper on top. When the liquid is almost boiling add a little water, sprinkle a little paprika on top (for color) and place under the broiler, stirring after 30 or 40 seconds. When the liquid starts to boil take the dish out. Place a couple tablespoons of pasta to the bottom of each plate and pour in the scallops and other ingredients.

Sprinkle crumbled bacon bits. Serve at once with garlic bread. (See left). One pound of scallops yields three servings. Get a good, fresh loaf of semolina Italian bread, cut in half the long way. Sauté a generous amount of chopped garlic in olive oil until clear but not brown. Pour it over the bread equally. Sprinkle ground salt and pepper and diced parsley liberally. Partially cover bread with tin foil, leaving top mostly exposed. Bake in a 350 degrees oven until bread begins to brown. Cut into individual pieces and serve a piece or two with each bowl of scallops.

Oh, you kids today with your prefab houses and instant icing/glue in a can, and gourmet gumdrops. Back in the day I had to push the baby in the jogging stroller all the way down Newtown Lane to the dreaded A&P to get the ingredients to make a gingerbread house from scratch. The ingredients include cream of tartar, which you don’t hear about much nowadays. You can also use it as a paste to get rid of water rings in the toilet. That’s right. Even though I now consider an ancient slice of pizza from the office fridge nuked to molten yumminess a fine dinner, there was a time when I was Martha Stewart, Helpful Heloise, and Irma Bombeck all rolled into one, bub. But I digress. I was one of those at home moms who made everything from scratch. Organic zucchini lovingly steamed and pulverized was my baby’s food. I credit the healthy diet with a premature verbal prowess that prompted one of the kid’s first dinnertime critiques: “This is disgusting.” Of course when the time was right and the season was bright I was going to make a homemade gingerbread house. So what if my son was only three and my nephew just 13? We were going to have family time and like it. In the 1990s, an “instant” gingerbread house was comprised of a kit that used molds for the house’s walls. Big, heavy,

iron molds. You filled the molds with gingerbread dough made from sifting stuff together into a bowl. Or, mostly into a bowl. Sifting is not for wimps. Liquid in the for m of eg gs – supposedly sans shells, but who does that? – plus molasses and water, created the dough which was pressed into the big, heavy, iron molds. That made the molds even heavier and harder to carry. So I kind of slid/dropped them into the oven to bake. The spillover made my house smell so festive! While the gingerbread cooked, it was time to make “Royal Icing.” Royal Icing is the glue that holds your house together, allegedly. The boys actually enjoyed making the Royal Icing. They got to lick the spoon and the electric beater blades. (Remember to turn the mixer off first, ladies and gents.) By the time we finished making and eating all the icing, then making a second batch to actually use, we all pretty much lapsed into a sugar coma . . . And were awakened by the smoke alarm. The house was not “fully involved,” as firefighters say, but the gingerbread spillover was. Rescuing the million pound molds brimming with scorched gingerbread was a physical challenge. Did I mention they weigh a million pounds? Getting them all out of the smoking stove without injury was the test.

Luckily I had plenty of aloe for the burns. The box said the gingerbread walls would simply “pop” out of the molds. The box lied. Charred at the edges, stuck to the iron, and . . . well, lumpy, the finished product resembled nothing like the walls of the house. “Tough Tinkerbell. We’re making this goddam house anyway,” I informed the boys in my most motherly Mrs. Claus tone. By now the baby was crying while my nephew whispered softly, “I really don’t want to do this anymore. I don’t even like gingerbread.” “This is our new TRADITION,” I hollered, sweating. The Royal Icing stuck to the spatula. It stuck to the bowl. It stuck to our fingers. It turned black gingerbread crumbs into black gingerbread balls. It stuck to the counters. It stuck to the cabinets. It stuck to the floor. It did not stick to our lumpy gingerbread walls. At all. So, in 1991 at the Merrill house, on Christmas day we had a fragrant tree festooned with handmade lace ornaments, home-gilded greens across the mantle and on the bannisters, lace snowflakes in the windows, The Messiah on the cassette deck, eggnog served in crystal cups, the table set with my finest holiday china and Grandma Honey’s silver, a tablescape of subtly glittered pinecones that matched the hand crafted napkin rings. And at the center of it all, boldly brown and black and stuck to a paper plate, coated in powdered sugar “snow,” the Merrill family homemade from scratch Christmas masterpiece – a gingerbread lean-to.
