Pristine Pools: Darvin’s ‘Real’ Job By Kitty Merrill
Talk about your local boy making good. A graduate of Springs Elementary School and East Hampton High School, Greg Darvin worked cleaning pools during the summers as a teenager. In college while studying economics and finance, he started his own pool company. After graduation from SUNY Albany, he recalled, “I knew I didn’t want to work on Wall Street.” He continued his pool work for a couple of post grad years, making bank during the summer and traveling during the winter. “I always thought I’d get a real
job,” he said. But, eventually, Darvin decided to embrace what he’d built, and since its founding in the 90s Pristine Pools has become a leader in the local luxury pool industry. At first his focus was on service and maintenance, but over the years, Darvin learned about pool design “organically.” His designs and the work of Pristine Pools have been featured in such publications as Architectural Digest, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, New York Post, Newsday and Better Homes & Gardens’ Garden, Deck and Landscape. Waterfalls and fountains, spas separated from the traditional pool with “invisible” walls, a hot tub built in a gazebo overlooking a spacious pool, pools with astounding views of adjacent water bodies – they look like water floating on water. Darvin wouldn’t say how much the pools cost or what his most expensive design has been. He prefers to postpone budget talks with clients, too. At the initial consultation, he said, “I don’t want to design to a preconceived notion. I don’t want to put numbers to things.” Instead, he prefers to meet with clients to discuss size, shape, and dimensions. From there he’ll make a first draft design, with budget and finish materials the topic of a second discussion. With that first draft, Darvin seeks maximum input from clients. “I tell them I don’t have ego attached to my design, I want them to be honest and critical.” Changes to the construction industry over the years, not to mention the advent of text, email, easy call conferencing and myriad manners of instant communication have made sharing design concepts “so instantaneous . . . it’s easy to communicate with three or four people at a time,” Darvin pointed out. Strides in technology also allow for “almost photo quality images” available during the design phase. Those advances allow for maximum input and feedback from clients, which is paramount to Darvin. “I try to get as much input Continued on page D-12.

ARF Designer Showhouse First up, the sixth annual “ARF Thrift Shop Designer Showhouse and Sale.” The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons will hold its annual showhouse on Saturday.

When Your House Is A Hollywood Star

was occasionally entertained in the house by his cousin Susannah Ingersoll and it became the inspiration for his Gothic novel. Unfortunately the Ingersolls remodeled the house and the gables were removed. That created a quandary for Universal Pictures, which acquired the rights to Hawthorne’s novel. A facade of the house was constructed on a studio back lot. As the filming intensified, three different studios were needed to recreate interiors of the house. Sanders and Price never stepped foot in the real thing. Just like actors, some houses are camera friendly. Consider
the Ennis House in Los Angeles. The Frank Lloyd Wright classic has been featured in a half dozen films including Blade Runner (1982), House on the Haunted Hill and many others. This stunning futuristic house has numerous TV shows and commercials as well as movies on its resume. One of the most famous scenes of all time was filmed in the “Beverly House,” in Los Angeles that was once owned by William Randolph Hearst. Once again an actor played second fiddle – not only to the house, but to a horse: a horse head, to be exact. That would be the scene in The Godfather where the movie Renoir, Pierre-Auguste. Imagine what George Sanders and Vincent Price felt like when they found out a house was replacing their names on the movie marquee. Actually, it made perfect sense: The House Of Seven Gables, a literary masterpiece written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, had a huge following. Set in the mid 1850s, Hawthorne used a colonial mansion in Salem, Massacuttsetts as his inspiration. The house dates back to 1668 and was originally known as the Turner Mansion. Alas, John Turner III lost the family fortune and the Ingersoll family acquired the house. A relative, Nathaniel Hawthorne

producer Jack Wolz awakens to find an uninvited guest under his satin sheets. The house showed up again years later in The Bodyguard starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. It was also featured in Into The Night and Topaz. Closer to home, movie buffs may remember Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton frolicking on the beach in the 2003 classic Something’s Gotta Give. The spectacular oceanfront Southampton estate, located at 576 Meadow Lane, was later sold for $41 million to Jimmy Tisch, CEO of Loews Corp. Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind (2004), starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, was filmed in Michael Kennedy’s oceanfront house in Wainscott. The scene of Woody Allen chasing the lobster through the kitchen in Annie Hall was filmed at the Rattray summer house on Cranberry Hole Road in Amagansett. Then there was Pollock starring Ed Harris and Marcia Gay Harden. It was filmed in . . . duh, the Pollock House on Springs Fireplace Road. Ditto Grey Gardens, the awardwinning full-length documentary filmed by Albert and David Maysles at an overgrown and rundown private home . . . called Grey Gardens. Sag Harborites remember Alan Alda taking over Main Street to shoot Sweet Liberty in 1986. Alda used a number of locals as extras – in fact, if you are local it might be fun to rent the film and see how many faces look familiar. Sometimes a house can be an integral part of the movie without even being in the movie. The house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville where Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed six family members in 1974 is perhaps the best-known haunted house in the world. Three movies have been made of the Amityville Horror massacre – and all three were filmed in Toms River, NJ at house converted to look like the gambrel style original in Amityville. Some homeowners who let film companies use their house – or rented it to them – are sorry they ever did. The Goonies featured a house in Astoria, Oregon. The 1985 cult classic recently enjoyed a 30-year anniversary and a remake, but legions of fans have come to the house over the years -- thousands, complained owner Sandi Preston. She has covered the entire side of the house that faces a public road with blue tarps and put up a sign informing fans visitors are not welcome.

Your House: Headaches And Solutions By Emily Toy
In a lot of ways, it’s a pinnacle of the American Dream. You get married, get a dog, land a great job, have the two kids, and finally, buy your dream home. For many, owning a home is the biggest investment one will make in a lifetime. It’s also one of the biggest burdens one will ever have to carry. Homeownership is a huge responsibility, one that goes far beyond just paying bills on time and deciding what color to paint the walls. There are dozens of little details necessary for homeownership, and for the most part, they’re not pretty. Everything from installing the required fencing for a pool, to making sure the dimensions for that storage shed in the back corner of your property are correct are crucial elements that can be expensive and a headache if not addressed in a timely and proper fashion. Septic systems are another big problem area that can cost thousands if not taken care of. Hampton Septic Services, a wastewater management company based in East Hampton, opined that when it comes to septic systems, most homeowners take the “out of sight out of mind” approach. HSS recommends getting a typical septic system pumped every two to three years, with pumping becoming more frequent if there’s a garbage disposal on the property or if the house is close to a body of water, if the system is small, or if it’s more than 10 years old. And as always, refrain from flushing feminine hygiene products, harsh chemicals, paint, solvents, baby or personal wipes, or any other dense waste. Got questions? Call HSS at 631-267-7515. Another aspect of homeownership that can cause headaches for homeowners includes the delicate art of proper fencing. Fences are required for specific
things surrounding specific areas of a property. The big one here is swimming pools. According to the Division of Code Enforcement for New York State, the barrier must completely surround the swimming pool and must obstruct access to the swimming pool and the barrier must be at least four feet high. There are other, stipulations for swimming pool fencing that can be specific to individual towns. New Yorkers can check www.dos.ny.gov/dcea/pools. htm\ for more information and visit their town’s websites. Have pesky neighbors and want to add a fence? Obtaining a permit for installing a fence in these parts is $35. To get a permit, the homeowner must have a residential fence permit application and a copy of a survey map, with proposed fence location illustrated. In most cases, these permits can be obtained from the building department at your local town hall. Most of the same goes for installing a storage shed. Applications are usually available online via your town’s website or also within the building department at your town’s respective town hall. Got all your ducks in a row and ready to build? Between the deer, the mosquitoes, the ticks, and other annoying insects, there are plenty of ways your home could be a huge bullseye for problems. Want to avoid, or already got pests? What really makes something more special is use of finish materials, tiles and stones.” But not all stones will survive the East End climate. There’s a limited pallet of materials that do well in the salt air and winter weather. Customers could browse a showroom in Manhattan and see materials from all over the world, but they might not survive our winters and sea air. It’s “huge” to know what will work well and endure in The Hamptons, according to Darvin.

Hampton Designer Showhouse This year’s much anticipated annual Hampton Designer Showhouse will take place in Sag Harbor. The house is open from Sunday, July 24, through Monday, September 5, and is open Monday to Sunday from 11
