Holiday Flicks

THE INDEPENDENT Q Traveler Watchman

By Miles X. Logan

Hollywood studios love the holiday season – it’s traditionally the time to get out and go see a movie, especially since schools are on vacation, meaning mom can’t wait to get the little ones out from underfoot.

Arthur Christmas (Nov. 23)

Seems there are all kinds of technological advances to help Santa fulfill the massive task of getting presents to everyone on Christmas Eve. Thank God Arthur is around to help out dad.

James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent (as Santa), Bill Nighy, and Imelda Staunton are the voices in this clever animated film. It’s in 3-D, of course. Who knew Santa had a son, anyway?

Hugo (Nov. 23) Martin Scorsese meet Sacha Baron Cohen. We kid you not. It’s about an orphaned boy who lives in a train station in Paris. He finds this mechanical man in disrepair and a note from his dead father and . . . suddenly

Home For The Holidays 2011

we’re in 3-D. Adapted from Brian Selznick’s novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret. It has its Scorsese moments, but no mobsters get killed. This could be a surprise Oscar contender. But where’s Leo?

A perfect cast led by Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Ralph Fiennes, and Tom H a rd y a l l ows t h e viewer to uncover a most sophisticated plot layer by layer. A perfect holiday night out – don’t miss it.

The Muppets (Nov. 23) Hey, wait, aren’t they dead? Apparently not. Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, and Jack Black are among the voices who partake in the reunion movie. Next comes the comeback tour, video game, and a stint in rehab for Miss Piggy.

N e w Ye a r ’s Eve (Dec. 24) Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman) signed the likes of DeNiro, Michelle Pfeiffer, John Duhamel, Jessica Biel, Jon Bon Jovi, Ashton Kutcher, Hilary Swank, and Haile Berry (among many, many more big names) to star in a series of New Year’s Eve (Duh!) vignettes. For now, at least, it is this year’s IT movie.

Sleeping Beauty (Dec. 2) Don’t make the mistake of taking the kids to this one. It’s about a college ho who turns into a prostitute. Emily Browning turns in a stunning performance and yes, there is a plot somewhere in there. Tinker, Tailor, S o l d i e r, S py (Dec. 9) The remake of John le Carré’s thinking man’s spy story is packed with drama.

Alvin and the Chipmunks Chipwrecked. (Dec. 24) They’re back, and this time in 3-D. Christina Applegate and Amy Poehler are on board as Alvin, Simon and crew are living it up until a vacation cruise they are on takes a turn for the worse. A bounty for anyone who can shoot one of the rats before they start singing.

a step further. For lots of folks, the economic downturn’s meant certain services they used to enjoy morphed from de rigueur occurrences to downright luxuries. People have begun to eye practical gifts with a new attitude and simpler pleasures and services have become eagerly accepted examples of gift giving savvy. Think outside the box, and focus on our local businesses. The rewards compound when the present is something people can use and something that helps local businesses. Some ideas? Bring the heat! Order up a tankful of heating oil from Schenck Fuels or Cash is King Fuel Oil for that special someone, call Quogue Sinclair, Grant or Hardy and have her furnace serviced, or contact Bay Gas for the natural gas heaters. Check out Hildreth’s for a comfy new winter throw or a plush fleece bathrobe, pick up a comforter from English Country Antiques, warm winter boots from Shoe-

Inn or even toasty socks from the Outdoor Store cuz baby, it’s cold outside (or will be soon). Forget the tiara; give the princess in your life a mattress and box spring combo from Sleepy’s or East End Mattress in Westhampton. Skip the pea. So far, the forecasters haven’t said whether we’ll have a white Christmas. If so, or, just in case, gifts from the hardware store are in order. One year, almost everyone on my list got a telescoping ice scraper/ car brush from Bernie at Village True Value Hardware in East Hampton and kvelled about it. Stop in there for shiny new snow shovels or create a “hurricane kit” now when the supply of D batteries is bountiful. For the seniors on your list, how about a winter’s worth of snowplowing? Visit Indy’s service directory and classified section to find local contractors who provide the service, and if all you need is a walk cleaned, your local high school may keep a list of kids CONTINUED ON PAGE C-17.

a Holiday Feast Italian Style

By Rick Murphy

I have insisted on cooking a traditional turkey dinner Thanksgiving and Christmas, even as attendees dwindled and I was left primarily with my wife’s family. Seems they don’t like turkey, so after years of wrangling I gave in -- no sense toiling for two days if they don’t even appreciate the

fruits of my labor. Instead, I’m opting for an Italian theme this season. Coming from an Italian family, it’s nothing new to me. We used to have an Italian meal in the afternoon and a full turkey dinner a few hours later. That was really overkill. Last year I surprised

everyone by going Italian. Antipasto Put out a giant tray at noon and leave it there, letting guests munch as they please. You can even get away with plastic plates and utensils. (For 8 people) Cover a large tray with romaine and radicchio lettuce and pile away: a dozen jumbo boiled shrimp, maybe with a little cocktail sauce on the side; roll up some nice slices of proscuitto, maybe a half pound and place it next to the shrimp; slice some aged Romano cheese thin, pile up assorted imported olives; get some sliced provolone and salami; you can cheat

and buy some calamari salad at the Italian store, and maybe some octopus salad (Insalata di Polipi), a traditional Italian holiday treat. I make a nice salad of artichoke hearts cut in half, grape tomatoes, celery, and chick peas. Pile a ladle full of that on. And, of course, you have to have some hot stuffed peppers, and some figs, especially if you have mastered the art of growing them yourself. If you’re moving in a circle, you’ve probably filled the platter up. Drizzle some good extra-virgin olive oil and wine vinegar all over and you’re done. Have a basket of bread on hand and let people do as they may – the guys like to take a plate into the den and watch football. The ladies end up in the kitchen making lasagna and doing what they do best, gossiping. Have plenty of red wine out – it helps digest all the rich food and prevents agita. Lasagna (For sauce) Sauté a diced onion and 12 gloves of garlic (roughly chopped) in 1/4 cup olive oil. Add three cans San Marzano tomatoes, crushed by hand. Add fresh chopped parsley and basil and dry oregano to taste. Throw in a couple bay leaves, some sliced mushrooms, a splash of dry red wine, and some pepper. Cook for a couple hours under low heat and stir often while drinking red wine. Add two small cans of tomato paste, stir well, and let cook another hour. (For lasagna) Carefully cook a pound of lasagna noodles until they are al dente. Put a quart of premium ricotta cheese in a stainless steel bowl. Add diced mozzarella cheese, grated Romano, salt, diced parsley, and pepper. Some folks from the old country add béchamel to make it creamier. CONTINUED ON PAGE C-14.

“I don’t like lasagna, either,” she replied. Oh well. The important thing is the family was together. More important, I love lasagna, and had enough to eat for a week. I didn’t forget my sister in law, though. “Here,” I said, “have a nice plate of scungilli.” Of course, I had a box full of the classic Italian desserts – my favorites are sfogliatelle and cannoli (always get them made fresh!). None of the women wanted any – diets, you know -- but we whipped up some espresso and broke out the sambuca nonetheless. The girls, as they are wont to do, made the ultimate sacrifice and dove in.

looking to make a couple of extra bucks this winter. Blow out the notion to include lawn mowing or raking or housecleaning coupons, depending on your taste . . . why, yes, I would indeed love to have someone come over and rake for a day! There was a lean year once, when my Christmas gift was a set of new tires. I’m sure lots of people these days would look happily upon some new steel belts from Consumer Tires. Last year the winter roads did a number on my Echo. A gift certificate from Reid Brothers for a wheel alignment would be welcome, and so would detailing from Southampton Car Wash, a tune up from Alvarado Mechanical or a visit to A to Z Auto Radiator to make sure the car stays toasty till May. Planning on doing a lot of walking this winter? Think Boots from Gone West and you’ll look good and keep the toes warm. Nobody says you have to wait till December 25 to give gifts. Why not help deck the halls? This weekend Marder’s hosts its annual open house and Buckley’s Flower Shop and Garden Center hosts one on December 3 and 4. How happy would your gift recipient be, if you showed up with all the holiday trimmings – a wreath, greens or roping -- and spent time together making the season bright? Check out awesome arrangements by East Hampton Flowers, too. You could also pick up a tree sold by local charitable organizations for a gift giving two-fer. Speaking of double shots, a case of Long Island wine from McNamara’s in the Bridgehampton Commons or Race Lane Liquors in East Hampton supports the stores and wineries. Call Hampton Bays Wines & Spirits and they’ll deliver the gift for you. I’ll take my merlot with a set of new glasses from Salty Home in Bridgehampton, thank you. Getting hungry? Who wouldn’t love one of the unparalleled cakes or pies from the Beach Bakery at Gurney’s or a sweet deal from the Watermill Cupcake Company? Add some gourmet brew from Hampton Coffee Company and you’ve got an awesome dessert gift. Or, go for a breakfast present of Bob’s fabulous bagels from Twice upon a Bagel. Don’t forget the tofu spread, specialty cream cheese and fabulous fresh OJ. Lunch more your speed? Pack a basket with

chicken and salads from Cromer’s or grab some vittles from South Fork Deli and have a picnic in December. Needless to say, coupons for dinners for two at any number of local restaurants are nothing to frown at. And after all that food? Head to Gurney’s spa for a swim, B-east for a spin, the East Hampton RECenter for some Zumba, Buckskill Winter Club for a turn around the ice rink, East Hampton Indoor Tennis for an afternoon in the bubble or Hampton Gym Corp. for a circuit training session. Exercise class coupons and gym memberships are

special treats to help keep friends fit during lean times. And to keep looking n i ce? H ow a b o u t g i f t certificates for haircuts or mani/pedis? We love Elaine over at Special Effects in East Hampton. You can’t go wrong with any of the treatments in Gurney’s’ Sea Water spa if you’re looking for real luxury. Consider supporting local art and entertainment with gift tickets to shows at Guild Hall, Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center and Bay Street. Buy crafts at local sales benefiting our churches and schools. Visit the gift shop at The Parish Art Museum. Amp up the

entertainment and send them to the Big Apple with a book of trip coupons from the Hampton Jitney or Luxury Liner. Patronizing local businesses this holiday season is pretty easy, once you let your mind wander outside the prepackaged, department store logo-stamped box. Purchase practical items and services at small shops and stores in your hamlet and show you care about your friends, family, and a sustainable community.
