I HAB A CODE I think I’m getting a cold. Or is it the flu? One never rests when one is a hypochondriac during the height of a flu epidemic. It reminds me of this column I wrote another cold or flu ago. Here it is: Is there anyone out there who is not sick with a cold or the flu? It’s like the plague. Men, women and tiny children are all walking around sneezing, coughing, snorting and hacking. I’ve been sick with a miserable cold for days. I’m typing this with one hand, in bed, on my laptop computer, like some Internet pervert, except

in my case I’m holding a tissue in the other hand. I can’t go anywhere without my pants pockets bulging with a giant wad of Kleenex. A number of worldly women have noticed the bulge and greeted me with the timeless line: “Do you have a cold or are you just happy to see me?” I feel like death warmed over. My wife, the beautiful Judy Licht, is trying to be sympathetic, but it isn’t working. (How come your spouse, no matter how he or she tries to be sympathetic to the fact that you’re dying from a cold, can’t seem to communicate that they know how sick you really are?)

Dial any pediatrician in the United States and they don’t even say hello anymore. They just shout out: “AMOXICILLIN! AMOXICILLIN! GIVE HIM AMOXICILLIN!” For would-be grownups like me, the doctors are selecting from a menu of five or six “miracle medicines” which, when they “work,” take a week longer than chicken soup used to take to cure you. I have the most wonderful, brilliant, talented doctor in the world: Dr. Nathaniel Wisch. He’s cured me of everything but my hypochondria (which I’m convinced will some day kill me), but when I call and report that I’m getting a cold he turns into a fashion coordinator. His first question is, “What color is the stuff you’re bringing up?” I don’t know. I don’t want to look,” I answer. “You must look,” he insists. So I say, “Okay. Okay . . . ” It looks like everything inside of my body is green. It looks like my body is having a secret St. Patrick’s Day party and I’m the only one invited. So when I went in for an examination he started me with something called Biaxin, pronounced “Bi-oxen.” I must admit the name didn’t give me confidence. How good can a drug that is named after a cow that is sexually attracted to both male and female cows be? I was right. The Biaxin didn’t work, so I called Dr. Wisch and he asked me to describe the new “color” I was bringing up. I’m sending him a color chart of Benjamin Moore paints along with the explanation that I’m currently bringing up stuff somewhere between Benjamin Moore’s Pacific Celadon #1674 and Tropical Soho Canary #1693.

When I breathe in and out the wheezing sound that comes out of my asthmatic chest sounds a little like an out-of-tune accordion and so I’m amusing my family by playing “Lady of Spain” with my lungs. I’m taking everything. Nothing is working. What I know about most modern medicines is that they don’t work. Before the miracle medicines were around, a cold would come on and all one could do about it was to take aspirin and plenty of hot chicken soup and an occasional Luden’s Honey Lemon Cough Drop. Then science came on the scene. Sir Alexander Fleming (an interesting last name when I consider my current condition) invented penicillin and the war in our bodies was officially on. Germs and bacteria or viruses, or whatever those tiny things that inhabit our bodies are called, were killed by the billions. But it was survival of the fittest and those little buggers who survived grew stronger and stronger and now they laugh at our feeble, pitiful attempts to stop them. So what used to take three days to cure with chicken soup now takes five or 10 days or even a month to cure with expensive antibiotics. I’m in better shape than my daughter Jodi – she has three children under the age of 10. Do you know what kids that age do for sport? They cough and sneeze in each other’s faces for the fun of it. They’re sick all the time. A child’s nose starts to run when they are born and it doesn’t dry up until they’re 35 years old, married, and living in another state. A child under the age of 10 is a walking time bomb.

Familiar Faces Facing Off? By Kitty Merrill
Glossy campaign brochures could feature familiar faces next fall if two veteran pols do, indeed, face off in the race for East Hampton Town Supervisor. The names Cantwell and Schneiderman are already being bandied about in political circles. Both have a history of public service and served on the town board dais in the past. This week Larry Cantwell, a Democrat, and Jay Schneiderman, an Independence Party member, affirmed they are seriously considering runs for the town’s top spot. Last fall Cantwell announced plans to retire from his position as East Hampton Village Administrator. He held the post for some 30 years, with stints on both the town board and the town planning board, not to mention a failed bid for supervisor in 1981, along the way. When he made his announcement in October, Cantwell told local media that he wasn’t retiring for the purpose of running for office. At the time he expressed doubts about a desire to enter the local political fray.
But this week local Democratic Pa r t y l e a d e r J e a n n e F r a n k l admitted party members have been “absolutely” pushing to recruit Cantwell. The one-time lawmaker said Monday that community members had consistently approached him with an eye toward persuading him to run. Will he? “On any given day, I can answer that question in different ways,” he said. “I’m seriously considering it. I’ve talked to a lot of different people about it, and a lot of people have been coming up to me asking me to run, but at this point I’m certainly not making a final decision.” Asked why he’d contemplate a run, Cantwell replied, “This is going to sound real corny, but I love this place. It’s been my life and I feel I have a lot more to give.” The “giving” for Cantwell began decades ago when he was the first Democrat in over 40 years elected bay constable. At the tender age of 25, he was, in 1975, the town’s youngest-ever elected official. Cantwell went on to win a seat on the town board, serving from 1977 to 1982. In ’81 he ran unsuccessfully
for supervisor against Republican Mary Fallon. The following year, Cantwell resigned from the town board to take the post with the village.
January 16, 2013
During the late 90s Cantwell was appointed to the planning board by then-supervisor Cathy Lester. Interestingly, his reappointment was blocked, amidst criticism, by the Republican majority on the town board helmed by thensupervisor Jay Schneiderman. For more than a year Schneiderman, now a county Continued on Page 29.

Whales Wash Ashore
By Kitty Merrill
Scientists from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Education had their hands full . . . of dead whale parts, on Monday, as two teams strived to perform necropsies on a pair of whales that washed up on the beach in Amagansett the day before. The first, a 58-foot fin whale, came ashore dead and the team worked on the shoreline Monday, taking samples in an effort to determine its cause of death and using a crane to move it off the beach for disposal. The second, a pygmy sperm whale, was in the lab at Riverhead with another team. Executive director and senior biologist Rob DiGiovanni described the sequence of events. Early Sunday morning, the foundation deployed a rescue team in response to an alert regarding a whale beached in Amagansett near the Windward Shores Resort on Napeague. Later that afternoon, part of the team was diverted when they learned another large animal was beached about two miles down the shore. The first creature, a 58-foot fin whale, was dead and had been for “quite a while, a couple of weeks” DiGiovanni reported. It was in an advanced stage of decomposition,
which made it difficult to move or procure samples for testing, the biologist said. The fin whale appears to be female, and had evidence of “entanglement” scars, which could mean it had gotten caught in nets. But there was no netting or other material present in the carcass. It also had evidence of blunt force trauma. “It hit something or something hit it before it died,” the scientist said. Whether the trauma was the cause of death is still unknown pending the outcome of the necropsy. “Fin whales are common off our shores year round,” DiGiovanni explained. In fact, the Amagansett

Experts: Year End Sell Off Was Significant By Rick Murphy
Jerry Della Femina may have been the poster child, but he wasn’t the only Hamptons-based homeowner rushing to sell his house before 2012 ended. In fact, it might have been a national trend. Sales in many markets saw considerable increases in 2012 – it is unclear how much can be attributed to a market recovery, and how many sales were triggered by the seller’s desire to avoid paying more taxes. “Our affiliates in New York, Manhattan, Westchester, all did well – there was a big boost all around,” said Enzo Morabito, a top broker for Elliman. With the capital gains tax scheduled to rise on January 1, more than a few sellers saved millions of dollars by completing a sale before the deadline. The full extent of the sell off won’t be known for another week or so – that’s because many of the deed transfers have yet to be recorded and released by the Suffolk County Clerk’s office. “We had over $35 million in the last month,” Morabito reported.

“Normally we get a little buzz but nothing like this.” Kelly Bensimon of “Real Housewives” fame sold her Further Lane estate near the end of the year and “saved over $500,000,” Morabito reported. The capital gains tax went up by over eight percent on January 1, when the Bush tax cuts were eliminated for wealthy Americans. “The savings were substantial, so a lot of bull and a lot of posturing went out the window. The savings were so substantial you’d have to be a fool not to be flexible,” Morabito added. In another instance, a would-be seller with a confidentiality agreement who took his property off the table in the fall returned to the table “after the true implication [of the tax hike] came to light.” In another instance a purchaser cooperated with the seller to close the deal in a hurry – and save the seller $1 million. “One deal we literally went to contract on Friday and closed Monday,” Morabito reported. “We did everything – title, termite, inspection, in three days. Of course, I pay a premium for that.”
The Mortgage Relief tax was also set to expire – though Congress ultimately extended it. “That was a sigh of relief for anyone dealing with debt forgiveness,” said John Brady, Senior Vice President of Nest Seekers, although he added, “No one was saying ‘if I don’t sell I’m doomed.’” The sell off wasn’t limited to just real estate. According to a Wall Street Journal article in November, “The prospect of higher taxes on capital gains is prompting many to unload some of their winning stocks.” The WSJ reported that many money managers were advising clients to sell before the year ended. “The wave of selling is a twist on the usual yearend rush among financial advisers, who typically help their clients sell their losing stocks to offset gains from other investments,” according to the article. George Simpson, the president of Suffolk Research Inc., has been charting market trends for decades. “It’s like a big ocean liner,” he said of the local real estate market. “It doesn’t change very often.” If there were a selloff, he guessed, it would be “statistically insignificant.”

EDITORIAL Cuomo’s Ambitious Agenda Governor Cuomo has mapped out an ambitious agenda for his second term, and the reforms suggested are long overdue. Cuomo has already proven his resolve by taking on the powerful teachers’ and municipal workers’ unions and prodding the long dysfunctional state legislature into action. His latest proposals include a virtual ban on assault rifles, which will surely put him squarely in the crosshairs of the powerful gun lobby. Cuomo also wants to increase the minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.75, and that’s an initiative the federal government should adopt as well. Working a full week for only $290 in an economy where gas, oil, and rent prices are rising makes it difficult to even put food on the table. A higher minimum wage will encourage people on public assistance and unemployment to find paying jobs. Cuomo said he would push for a Women’s Equality Act that will guarantee equal pay for equal work and at long last address the gender inequality that exists not only in this state but the entire country. In 1973 New York State enacted the Rockefeller Drug Laws, the most Draconian legislation imaginable. It mandated 15-year jail terms for drug possession, and ruined the lives of countless young people guilty of nothing more than having a little marijuana on them. Cuomo wants to decriminalize marijuana use, and it is about time. Finally, the state will come full circle. Critics contend Cuomo is posturing with an eye on the White House in 2016. Maybe that’s not a bad idea. Saving What’s Left The current East Hampton administration will always be remembered for rescuing us from the fiscal chaos wrought by disgraced former town supervisor Bill McGintee. But the Bill Wilkinson era may leave a more frightening legacy – the erosion of the planning process so carefully honed over the last four decades.

Fair Share
Dear Mr. Murphy, Commissioner Blass said he was treated fairly at his interview Thursday and asked that I send you supporting documentation to set the record straight with regard to false statements made by the Southampton Supervisor and tenant you interviewed. In addition, it would be nice if you corrected that statement about CHI turning a “handsome profit.” I attach the motel’s certificate of occupancy, which clearly lists it as a 32-unit
motel. In addition, the motel has a permit from the Suffolk County Health Department that clearly indicates it is “year-round” and not “seasonal.” I assume you confirmed that the supposed “court date” listed for the two women tenants was a fabrication since they had not been served with any court papers. In terms of billing, you were correct in saying that the motel cost being paid to the landlord is about $38 per day, or less than half of a standard motel. CHI receives a “per diem” from Suffolk County for each occupant of $52.90, which is a rate that blends all of CHI’s homeless facilities and includes the motel cost plus all approved costs of security, case
Even its most ardent supporters agreed the planning process was cumbersome and time consuming, and probably deliberately so. But the lengthy reviews caused a backlash from some planning attorneys, businesses, and developers. Ostensibly, the “reform” of the planning process was designed to simplify the process. But what has occurred is a frontal assault on the safeguards needed to preserve our virgin woodlands and waterfront. At first it was mean spirited, personal attacks on the director of the planning department, who is well liked and extremely capable. Then it was a determined effort to limit the authority of the planning department by shifting authority away from the planners. Worse, a pattern of stacking our planning and zoning boards with malleable appointees who favor the administration’s pro-development mentality has compromised the boards. Last month the vice president of the zoning board, a Wilkinson appointee, opined that building on dunes might be allowable in certain instances. That statement, so heretical it has probably never been uttered in the history of this town, should send shock waves through every citizen. Zoning and planning board appointees have terms as long as seven years – the damage that can be done in that time frame is immeasurable. The Republican town board is essentially a lame duck. With all three seats up for grabs this fall, it is difficult to envision a scenario wherein the party retains power. Dominick Stanzione, a Republican, has been able to stand up to the majority on some issues. He could use some love from the other party -- preserving what’s left must be a bipartisan fight. We have too many zoning and planning board members who are pliable, weak-kneed, or wrongheaded. We need to get back to appointing the best and brightest and we urge the town board to do just that regardless of political affiliation.
management and counseling, supplies, linens, administration, liability insurance, etc. As you correctly reported, the contract is cost-based, meaning that if the agency earns any surplus over the approved and documented costs of the contract, it must be returned to the county (hence there is no profit). When discussing “fair share,” please put in perspective that the 30 families at Hidden Cove are the only homeless families placed by DSS in the entire town. This is out of 450 homeless families in Suffolk County. Brookhaven and Babylon, for example, have many more facilities and homeless families. And at Hidden Cove, they are moved within four months to five months on average, after receiving help in
finding housing and jobs. In terms of “fair share,” the Workforce Housing Needs Assessment determined the need for Southampton to create 227 affordable units between 2005 and 2020 out of the total need of 16,500 for Suffolk County (see attached). If you have a better idea of Southampton’s “fair share,” then I’d be interested in hearing it. The real issue is the refusal of most local community zoning boards to allow development (thus restricting supply). I believe the free market would take care of the demand if allowed to do so without huge taxpayer subsidies (today it takes over $200k in subsidy to produce Continued on page 16.

one affordable rental apartment!). As a believer in the free enterprise system, I believe the time is right to educate the public as to the benefits of smart growth development where density can help reduce taxes and bring back Suffolk County’s tax base. I hope this is helpful. ALEXANDER H. ROBERTS Executive Director, Community Housing Innovations, Inc. Editor’s Note: It’s a myth that not-forprofit companies don’t earn money. All they have to do is spend as much as they take in. In the case of CHI the company grosses almost $17 million a year. Mr. Roberts and other employees draw healthy salaries. The elderly woman in question received a Notice of Eviction. That is followed by court action -- in this case we are guessing it has been forestalled because of the publicity generated by our articles.
Gunaholics Dear Rick, Just when you think you have heard the most outrageous mouthings from our gunaholics, they one-up themselves. Following is the twisted logic presented by Larry Ward, Chairman of Gun Appreciation Day, stated at a press conference celebrating the event: I believe that gun appreciation day honors the legacy of Dr. King. First of all we’re looking for a peaceful protest, looking for people to come out and to remind the members of Congress and the president how we feel about our Second Amendment, and the truth is, I think Martin Luther King would agree with me if he were alive today that if African Americans had been given the right to keep and bear arms from day one of the country’s founding, perhaps slavery might not have been a chapter in our history.” Did anyone tell this “Chairman” that Martin Luther King is not alive today because he was assassinated with a firearm? No, he is not around to be boggled by this “Chairman’s” asinine assertion. Arm the slaves that were kidnapped; taken by force from their homeland and thereby erase the slavery chapter in our history. No doubt those history books would be printed in Texas with their traditionally unique distortion and rewriting of textbooks. Why not? It was seen fit to have Bachmann in the House “Intelligence” Committee Continued on page 17.

What movies have you seen that deserve an Oscar nomination? Allen Geller Lincoln. It was great. Even at three hours long we have to see it again because there was so much there. Daniel-Day Lewis was great. And Sally Field was incredible. What a great story about Daniel-Day Lewis flying from Scotland to read with her. Bob White Les Miserables. It was unbelieveable. I love seeing actors take on singing roles as opposed to trained singers. Russell Crowe was unbelievable and so was Hugh Jackman. And Anne Hathaway was wonderful, and as always so incredibly beautiful. Almond Zigmund A French movie. Goodbye First Love. A friend recommended it. It’s beautiful. It’s a slow but penetrating story. It’s about a young girl and she reconnects with her first love many years after he goes off to travel and explore the world. Adrian Morales I loved Django Unchained. It was such a great movie. It was set in the South. The most intense part was the man who had to fight for the liberty of his wife. And there was the man who gave him his liberty. And Leonardo DiCaprio played this horrible slave owner.

Gun Grabbers? Dear Mr. Murphy, The only way you gun grabbers can win an argument for eviscerating our constitutional freedom to own guns is to set up a straw man – in this case, a caricatured Wayne LaPierre – and dishonestly lampoon the NRA’s argument for our first freedom. The Second Amendment was not enacted so we can shoot ducks or varmints. It was included so we, the people, might have a fighting chance against a government gone wild with unchecked power. You know, like George III. A tyrant’s first order of business is to disarm the populace. That business, aided by “journalists” safe behind the First Amendment, proceeds apace. After that task is completed, they come for the printing presses. F.W. MEEKER Editor’s Note: In real life Rick is armed to the teeth. It was an honest lampoon.
Deliberately Manipulated To the Editor, People who understand how our immigration system actually works cringe every time we hear the false claim that “The system is broken.” Our immigration system is not broken. It’s being deliberately manipulated to fail. The Administration’s goal: encourage more and more illegal immigration in order to justify the largest mass Amnesty (aka “Comprehensive Immigration Reform”) in American history. Since his first days in power Obama has used Executive Orders and Administrative Ord ers to systematically redu ce enforcement of Federal immigration laws. His DHS pretends our borders are secure, when all empirical evidence shows they’re not. States that embrace “Local Enforcement” (Arizona) have been sued by Obama’s DOJ, while DOJ has remained silent as States (New York and Illinois) terminated
REAL ESTATE

their Federal “Secure Communities” programs aimed at deporting Criminal Aliens. Obama’s Justice Department opposes any form of local enforcement. DOJ terminated a highly successful program (in North Carolina) to discourage others. In four years, Obama has pretended that this effective tool to keep unlawful employees off America’s payrolls does not even exist! Passed in 2005, the REAL ID Act would make it difficult for illegal aliens to get valid Driver Licenses. Obama has delayed – again - the Federal deadline for States to comply with REAL ID law. Every State that has passed Voter ID laws (to prevent fraud including non-citizen voting) has been sued by DOJ. Their claim? That these laws hurt so-called “Hispanic” voters. In the past, when local police arrested an illegal alien with a single prior misdemeanor conviction, ICE could take custody of the individual who could then face deportation. But, in the closing days of 2012, Obama directed DHS to ignore criminal aliens unless they had three or more prior misdemeanor convictions. Instead of rubber-stamping Obama’s mass Amnesty, and what amounts to Mob Rule; Congress must reverse all of the above sabotage and policy failures. Congress needs to provide regular “progress reports” to the American people who overwhelmingly support enforcement of our immigration laws. ELAINE KAHL
Must See Theater To The Editor, Do Not Miss This Show. Last night I attended Love, Loss and What I Wore, currently showing in Southampton, with some girlfriends, I have to say it was so, so much fun! We all love Nora Ephron! Grab your mom, your sister, and/or your girlfriends daughter and head down to the Southampton Cultural Center (Th, F, S, & S) between now and 1/27, it was two hours hilariously spent, I promise, it’s great! Don’t miss it, and please spread the word, it’s primarily a women’s night out (unless your significant male other is really in touch with his feminine side) use this as an excuse to have an estrogen on parade night. be a wonderful, natural preserve, passive recreational site and possibly a worldclass exotic bird and animal preserve and botanical garden attracting tourism to Southold Town if the planning and zoning is completed thoughtfully and carefully. Good decisions, made early on, can have a major, positive impact on the Peconic Bay region for generations to come. Think and plan wisely! JACK MCGREEVY AND LEE WARD
No To Hagel Letter to the Editor, President Obama’s recent picks for Secretary of Defense - Chuck Hagel and Secretary of State - John Kerry call into question Obama’s judgment and wisdom and his ability to lead this country. Chuck Hagel opposed the successful troop surge in Iraq and he wants to prematurely pull troops out of Afghanistan. He believes in placating Communist Cuba and wants to negotiate with the terrorist organizations Hamas and Hezbollah. Hagel is committed to negotiating with Iran on its nuclear development program. He wants to make dramatic cuts to our military, which will weaken our national security posture. Hagel will be in lockstep with Obama and

will continue the policies of appeasement. John Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran with medals that Swift Boat commanders stated he did not deserve, will march to Obama’s tune of appeasement. Kerry, in Congressional hearings, turned on his fellow Vietnam War veterans. He could be another apologist for the Obama administration. As a former Navy enlisted man and officer I question the ability of the Obama/ Hagel/Kerry threesome to lead this country from a position of strength in the world. I do not have confidence in the capabilities of these key individuals to promote our national security. DONALD A. MOSKOWITZ

Pygmy sperm whales are not typically found close to shore, DiGiovanni said. The one discovered Sunday was under weight and sick, with little chance of survival or successful rehabilitation, the biologist explained. “It’s always a tough call, said DiGiovanni of the decision to dispatch the whale with a chemical solution similar to the type a veterinarian might use to put a pet to sleep. had “zero success with saving pygmy sperm whales that beach themselves. “The species doesn’t do well in captivity, DiGiovanni explained. Whether an animal is a viable candidate for rehabilitation is a key component in the assessment conducted on the beach by rescuers. Also a contributing factor? The foundation already has a harbor porpoise in its sole available tank in Riverhead, the only such tank from Maine to Virginia. Scientists have had success rescuing harbor porpoises, DiGiovanni reported. “We’ve worked with three harbor porpoises. This one will be ready for release in about a month.

the animals to the shore. “We’re always trying to find funding to study these animals on a broader scale, Di Giovanni acknowledged. Surveys conducted off shore could help determine whether whales are getting sick and dying more often or whether there are simply more of them around. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

the word – ugly girls with pigtails and braces. No, these woodlands, even though they are preserved, have trails the public uses for an assortment of reasons, like pretending to be Davy Crockett. Unfortunately, some folks bought their homes without realizing the nature preserve that abuts their property is in reality like 42nd Street – folks come parading through at all hours of the day and night. I have nothing against the trail walkers. Once last year Karen wanted to join them. “This sounds interesting,” she said. “Everyone is going to meet at midnight and walk down to the marshes under a full moon. Do you wanna go?” It was February. It was 14 degrees out. Are these people vampires? My friend, whom I’ll call Dave (because that’s his name) first noticed these unwanted trail walkers after he moved in last summer. He was sound asleep poolside when he heard rustling in the woods behind him. Sure enough a parade of freakazoids appeared. “Hark! I see a red bellied warbling warbler!” one screamed out. “Methinks I see a three-toed brown chested Eurasian Woodcock!” Yes, Dave was being invaded by a motley bunch of birdwatchers hell bent on looting, and, I assured him, anal rape. Here is a characteristic all birdwatchers share: 1) They all speak with an English accent, even though most of them come from Corona; 2) They dress funny and wear ugly hats; 3) They are delusional. I say this with confidence, because I have lived here all my life, and like all locals I know for a fact there are only three species of birds. Birdwatcher: “Hark, I see, an Oriental Pratincole!” Me: “No, that’s a sparrow.” Birdwatcher: “Oh, Maggie, ‘tis a sparrow. How many have we seen?” Maggie: “One million, eight hundred thousand, and eleven so far -- today.” There are sparrows, there are crows, and there are sea gulls. Everything else you see the sky is a freaking bug, trust me. Nature lovers worry me, because

they lurk in our woodlands, disturbing the natural order, and scaring away god’s creatures that call the dense woods home, like trail bikers. To me, a real nature lover should stay holed up at home reading National Geographic and watching Crocodile Dundee. Speaking of bugs, they are but one of the evils that lurk in the dense woods behind Dave’s hammock. There are also the assorted rashes in waiting like poison oak, poison ivy, poison sumac etc. Then there are the poison berries and mushrooms. And anyone who tells you there are no dangerous snakes around here is lying. And of course, vampires and Wolf-Boys and all the other half-humans Kristen Stewart cheats on. Then of course, the roaches and rats -- oh wait, they are in Dave’s pool house. A couple years back several people claimed a beaver was living in Northwest Woods. This was big news to nature lovers because there hasn’t been a beaver in these parts since the Cleavers and Wally left town. Maybe it was true, maybe not. Last year several people claimed to have seen a puma in town. I have several friends left over from the sixties who see strange things all the time – one swears he sees a giant spider with kaleidoscope eyes whose brain is melting through the eye sockets, with tie-dyed intestines trailing out the belly button. I just tell him he’s having a flashback, a bad trip. “No, man, it’s not a bad trip, I’m digging it,” he says. Whatever floats your boat, Moondog. The point is -- and there is one in here somewhere -- is that it won’t be long before a bear is spotted in these parts. That’s when all the trail walkers and bird watchers will get what’s coming to them, because the bear will be ravenous after sitting on the Jitney for hours with only a tiny bag of pretzels. Davy Crockett “kilt him a bear when he was only three.” Maybe those of us who still think a raccoon hat is a fashion statement are onto something. Memo to trail walkers; next time you are on a midnight walk be afraid, be very afraid. And keep a crucifix handy, too.

Showdown Over Homeless Hotel Looms By Rick Murphy
Southampton Town has notified the Suffolk County Department of Social Services (DSS) that it intends to sue to stop what officials call the illegal use of a Hampton Bays motel as a homeless shelter. Gregory Blass, the Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Social Services (DSS), took the offensive in an exclusive interview this week, and vowed that any effort to curtail the use of the motel would fail. Blass accused Southampton Town and other critics of the Hidden Cove Motel in Hampton Bays of making “utterly, patently false statements.” The motel on West Tiana Drive has been in the news of late -- including two recent articles in this newspaper -- because three rent paying tenants, including an 88 year-old woman and her handicapped daughter, are being evicted so their rooms can be used by DSS. Blass said the tenants are being evicted for unrelated reasons, and Southampton Town’s shot over the bow notwithstanding, the motel will continue to house social services
recipients. In a letter dated January 3 Southampton Town Attorney Tiffany Scarlato warned DSS that it is violation of the town’s zoning ordinances. Specifically, she said this week, there has been a change of use at the motel, “from a transient motel to a homeless shelter with no approval whatsoever.” The DSS would need to apply for a special exemption, she added, which would trigger a site plan review. “We are not required to comply with local zoning,” Blass said. He produced the certificate of occupancy dated 1976 that identified the motel as a year-round motel. Scarlato said the DSS is bound by the town’s definition of a “motel” which precedes the issuance of the C of O, and that makes the current use “illegal.” Blass acknowledged a county law prohibits more than 12 homeless units in any one dwelling but he said state law takes precedence. “The county has a responsibility to distribute the load. The homeless deserve to be given a fair shake,” Blass said. “The Town of Southampton

Roanoke School After a presentation by the Power of One and efforts by members of Roanoke’s Anti-Bullying Club, several classes at Roanoke have been inspired to join “The Great Kindness Challenge” which runs all this week. The Roanoke Anti-Bullying Club is composed of 14 students from Donna Verbeck’s class, who meet with Shannon Kutner, the Community Awareness Program (CAP) social worker. “Morgan Dunn, a fourth grader at Roanoke, inspired this project,” said Ms. Kutner, “and her inspiration motivated her classmates to join with her in this effort to prevent bullying.” “We play games in our club that make us think about how to prevent bullying and stop it when we see it in our school,” explained club member Rebecca Siemers. “Each person draws a piece of paper out of a jar, and then we talk about the sentence written on the paper, which is about a situation that might lead to bullying.” “We’ve also made anti-bullying posters and put them up in the hallway,” Jackson Loper explains. “It has really made a difference in our school. I’d say we’ve pretty much wiped out bullying at Roanoke. I’ve been bullied in the past, but I learned that if someone bullies you, be kind to them. That usually stops it.” East Hampton High School Esteban Aguilar, 2012 graduate and visual arts major at Keystone College, spoke to several advanced art classes on Tuesday, Jan. 8, followed by a presentation of his work at the East Hampton School Board meeting. Esteban discussed the trials and triumphs of balancing his academic course load with his art major and soccer practice. Eating and sleeping were in there somewhere, too. On Thursday both the newlylaunched Program of Studies and financial aid night will be held in the auditorium, beginning at 5:30 PM. The half-hour discussion on available courses at the high school, along with a description of scheduling and college credit courses is open to all students and parents in grades 8 and up. Amy Thompson, director of financial aid at St. Joseph’s College, will be presenting at 6 PM. Ms. Thompson will offer insight into completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), and will answer questions about applying for financial aid. All high school parents, guardians, and students are welcome. The Hampton Music Educators

On Tuesday Adam Fine will host a principal/parent brown bag gettogether at 5 PM in the library, with an opportunity for parents to discuss any questions or concerns they may have. Students are getting excited over the Winter White Dance, which will be held in the cafeteria starting at 7 PM on January 25. Although there may not be snow on the ground by then, attendees are invited to wear their best white outfits to celebrate the season!
East Hampton Middle School Thursday kicks off with a principal/ parent breakfast at 9:30 AM in the school cafeteria. Middle School parents are welcomed to bring their thoughts, questions, and concerns. Bingo and sports night, originally scheduled for Friday has been moved to Friday, January 25 from 7 to 9 PM. An evening of fun is planned for grades 6 to 8. “HuManuary,” an idea tossed around by special education teacher Claude Beudert and Jon Mautschke, science teacher, prior to the holidays, has begun! For a $15 donation to a local cause to be announced, a number of staff at EHMS is not shaving this month. Traditionally known as “Manuary,” this first-time effort at the school includes women as well. “We’re just going to have to take their word for it,” said Mr. Beudert. Prizes will be awarded in different categories at the beginning of February, including “Most Distinguished” – i.e. grayest – which Mr. Beudert believes he has the drop on. There has also been some discussion that math teacher Douglas Milano has been using MiracleGro, which may disqualify him from the running. The Middle School yearbook is seeking quotes and baby pictures from its eighth graders, along with casual photos of clubs, kids, and staff. For more information, contact Nidia Cebulski.

Crafting Custom Guitars By Kitty Merrill
“I call it my man cave,” Tom Bono said as he led the way down the stairs. But the music room and shop in his East Hampton home is anything but dark and cavernous. It’s a bright and tidy space, packed with records, cassette tapes, and CDs, plus recording equipment and tools lining walls decorated with photos of favorite musicians and memorabilia, and guitars. Lots of vividly hued, one-of-a-kind guitars. A mechanic with East Hampton Town and chief of the East Hampton Fire Department, Bono doesn’t just love guitars; he makes them. For about the last five years, he said, he’s been using a kit that provides the basic components,
then customizing the instruments with unique, glossy paint. His collection includes a guitar he made with his son Ryan, another rescued from a dumpster and rehabbed, and another painted to honor NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt. He says he’s customized about 15 guitars in the last five years. Bono worked at Plitt Ford for about 20 years in the body shop where his specialty was painting cars. “I got into music and started messing around with playing,” he recalled. It dawned on him “Anybody can buy a guitar.” He wanted to make his own custom instruments, using his painting skills to create designs, striping, and unusual color combinations. He also branched

both how to craft the guitars and improve his strumming chops. “He’s got the touch,” Bono said of Hanford, who he still prevails upon to tweak his final products. He doesn’t play as much as he’d like -- “too busy” -- but Bono participates in the Sunday Jams hosted by Crossroads Music in Amagansett. Through Michael Clark of Crossroads, Bono’s found his latest project -- repurposing an old electric guitar and amp into a shiny new set up that will be raffled off during the Gregg Rickards Memorial Scholarship Benefit Concert on February 1. A 2006 graduate of East Hampton High School, Rickards lost his battle with cancer last August. A talented musician, he performed with the jazz band, fiddle club, and school orchestra. He earned a degree in music from SUNY Oneonta in 2010. Family and friends put together the scholarship, which will be awarded in his name each year to an EHHS graduate pursuing a degree in music. This isn’t Bono’s first foray into charitable efforts. About two years ago he decorated a guitar with the puzzle piece symbol for autism. It was auctioned off to support Alternatives for Children, and signed by Bon Jovi guitarist Bobby Bandiera. More recently, Bono donated an instrument he customized to the Care for Cher benefit, designed to raise money for the family of local breast cancer victim Cheryl Bennett. “I like doing this because it gets my name out there and it’s a good cause,” he said, displaying the current project, in pieces on his workbench. “The parts are donated by Crossroads, so it just costs me a little time.” Bono often documents the progress of his projects with photographs. Visit The Independent’s website, www.indyeastend.com, over the coming weeks to follow the step-by-step creation of the guitar for the fundraiser. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Obituary Robert G. Lamparter, 77
Robert G. Lamparter of Montauk died at Southampton Hospital on January 10 of cancer. He was 77. Mr. Lamparter, who had built a summer home in Montauk in 1973, resided there year round since retiring in 1996 as an art and photography teacher at Walt Whitman High School in Huntington. He loved Montauk dearly and worked passionately to give back to the community. “He left Montauk a better place than he found it,” said John Keeshan of Montauk. He was born in Brooklyn on January 10, 1936 to William C. Lamparter and the former Nadine Lesch, and grew up in Malverne, NY, graduating from Malverne High School in 1953. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1957, where he was an active member of the Delta Kappa fraternity, and his Master of Arts in Education degree from Adelphi University in 1967. He served in the United States Army from 1958 through 1960, and was stationed at Fort Sam Houston, TX. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America throughout his life; serving as a leader at the Wauwepex Scout Training Camp in Wading River in the 1950s, as the director of the Ten Mile River Trading Post in Narrowsburgh, NY, during the 1960s through the early 1970s, and most recently as an assistant scoutmaster for the Montauk Boy Scout Troop. He worked as a lifeguard on Long Island during his twenties and in the early 1970s at the Montauk Golf and Racquet Club (now Montauk Downs State Park), and was an avid Montauk surfcaster. He was the long-time President of the Montauk Beach Property Owners Association (MBPOA), and most recently served as its VicePresident. He was instrumental in creating the Montauk Memorial

His daughter Keri Lamparter of Montauk said, “My father was passionate about Montauk and its preservation. He achieved great satisfaction through his civic involvement and touched so many lives in our community. My father was my closest friend, greatest ally, lifelong teacher and mentor, and the source of my artistic education and inspiration. He had only begun to experience any symptoms very recently. He lived life very fully, right to the end and passed away peacefully. My sister Lynn and I are profoundly grateful for the outstanding medical care he received from Dr. Tony Knott

in Montauk and ever yone at Southampton Hospital, as well as the wonderful support from my father’s friends and the community as a whole.” His wife Ann predeceased him in 2007. He is survived by his daughter Keri Lamparter of Montauk, daughter Lynn Tighe and granddaughter Erin of Wake Forest, NC, and brother William Lamparter of Waxhaw, NC. Donations to the Montauk Medical Center and the Montauk Memorial Day Parade committee are suggested. A memorial service will be held in April.

Day Parade with Ken Walles in 2011. He served as a Trustee on Montauk’s Fort Hill Cemetery Board, and was a dedicated MealsOn-Wheels volunteer. Along with retired East Hampton Town Justice Jim Ketcham, he spearheaded the campaign to successfully stop the proposed incorporation of Montauk village. East Hampton Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson said, “Bob Lamparter was the quintessential Montauk volunteer and community leader. He spearheaded the Montauk Beach Property Owners Association; mentored dozens of Scouts in the Montauk Scout Troop; and focused efforts on veteran’s issues and their positive portrayal in the East Hampton Community. He was persistent, passionate and plain speaking at the CAC and Board levels. He was truly a friend of Montauk and I will miss him.” “I knew Bob for a long time, since I went to school with his children,” said Legislator Jay Schneiderman. “When I was elected supervisor, he gave me “survival” guidance; I still remember it. Bob loved Montauk deeply and had no hesitation about speaking out for what he believed. He held strong beliefs and would express them with passion. If he set his mind to something, elected officials beware. He wasn’t backing down.”

secure postseason berths. Pierson knocked off Bridgehampton at home 58-44 to secure its spot atop the League VIII perch with a perfect 6-0 mark. Forrest Loesch was on fire throughout and finished with 25 points and recorded five assists. Jackson Marienfeld (11) and Jake Bennett (10) also hit double digits for the winners, who ran their overall mark to 9-1. Tyleke Furman and Jason Hopson each tallied 14 for the losers. Pierson travels down Route 114 Friday to take on Ross School in a 6:15 PM tiff and gets Smithtown Christian at home Tuesday evening. Bridgehampton has had a frustrating season. Not only are the Bees wanting for players, but the school’s stringent eligibility policy further saps its strength. It all came to a head January 8 when the Bees were forced to forfeit a critical game against Shelter Island because two players were suspended for failing quizzes. The

Bees (2-4, 3-6) and Shelter Island are both Class D teams, two of the four on Long Island. The loss could well cost Bridgehampton a spot in the state tourney. The Indians (4-2 4-5) and Greenport (4-2, 6-4) are the other local League VIII teams in the playoff picture. Southampton has proved the class of League VII thus far, as the Mariners are off to a 6-0 league mark and are 9-1 overall. Southampton swamped Hampton Bays 73-47 on the losers’ court Thursday. Shaundelle Fishburne was one of 10 Mariners to score -- he led the team with 14 points. Scott Rica had 13, Natauke Williams 11 and Lyle Smith added 10. Harry Fotopoulos had 19 for the Baymen, who are 1-4 in the league and 1-7 on the season. Fotopoulos dropped in 10 more the following night but Hampton Bays lost a home encounter against Port Jefferson 38-30. Center Moriches will travel to Southampton Friday night for a 7 PM affair against the Mariners. The locals travel to Port Jefferson Tuesday. East Hampton is in a three-way tie for second in League VI with a 3-2 mark despite losing to Amityville 73-57 Friday. Bonac played Blue Point/Bayport yesterday and gets Mount Sinai at home tomorrow in a 6:15 PM fray. Riverhead is 6-0 in League III after besting Smithtown East 63-54 Thursday. Credit Markim Austin (20) and Jeremiah Cheatom, who combined for 38. Ryan Blitzer, like Cheatom, a star on the county champion football team, added 13. Cheatom grabbed 15 rebounds. The Blue Wave travel to Newfield tomorrow and get West Islip at home Tuesday.

Riverhead ascended to the state finals last season, but the Blue Wave found the going rough at the beginning of this season. However, the team appears to be hitting its stride now. The North Forkers edged Smithtown West 60-54 in a hard fought home game Thursday. Naysha Trent tallied 22 point; Shanice Allen had 17 and
Dezare Brown 10 for the winners. It was the third straight win for the locals, who took over first place in League III with a 5-1 mark. Riverhead is 6-4 on the season. Newfield comes to town tomorrow for a 4 PM match-up; the Wave travel to West Islip Tuesday. Southampton annihilated Mercy at home Friday 51-11. Kesi Goree with 11 and Cassidy Guida with 10 led a balanced attack. The Mariners ran their League VII mark to 5-0 and are 7-3 for the season. The locals play at Center Moriches Friday at 7 PM. Southold/Greenport held onto first place in League VIII despite losing 71-62 at Hampton Bays Friday. Alexis Fotopoulos exploded for 22 points for the winners, and Haley Wood added 10. Andrea Tufano snatched 13 boards. Nicole Busso had 20 for the losers, and Justina Babcock and Melissa Rogers each had 10. Hampton Bays is 1-4 in the league and 2-7 overall. Southold is 4-1 in league action, 5-4 overall. The Settlers take a ferry over to Shelter Island Friday for a 4 PM affair. The Islanders are 2-3 in the league and 4-6 overall. East Hampton is in the League VI title hunt. A 49-36 home court victory over Amityville increased Bonac’s league record to 3-2. Jackie Messemer had the hot hand, tallying 21 points. Kaelyn Ward, who scored her 1000th varsity point last week, added 16. The locals, who are 6-3 overall, travel to Mount Sinai tomorrow afternoon.

Face Off
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7. legislator serving in his fifth, twoyear term has been an unofficial town supervisor designee. On Sunday, he confirmed plans to screen for the position in the coming weeks . . . with all three local parties, the Democrats, the Republicans and the Independence Party. Pick a major party and Schneiderman’s been alternately endorsed or opposed by it. He ran for supervisor in 1999 and re-election in 2001 on the Republican ticket. In 2003, he unseated Democrat George Guldi for a spot on the county legislature, again running on the Republican line. From there, political lines began to blur. He registered as a member of the Independence Party, following the lead of State Assemblyman Fred Thiele, and garnering no small measure of ire from the GOP, especially locally. But all was soon forgiven and Schneiderman ended up receiving a three-way cross endorsement for a subsequent re-election bid. Most recently, he ran for another term on the Democratic ticket, with the Independence Party line secured once again. (The Indies have endorsed Schneiderman every time he’s run for office.) The Democrats plan to hold their screenings in Februar y, Frankl reported. To the idea of Schneiderman seeking her party’s nomination, she said, “Everybody’s welcome to screen, it’s a democratic process.” While Schneiderman maintains positive working relationships

with county Dems -- he caucuses with them in Hauppauge -- locally it seems Democratic loyalists have never forgiven him for unseating Cathy Lester and wresting away the town board majority in 1999. “I see myself as somewhere in the center, and that suits me well,” he said, speaking of political allegiances. “I agree sometimes with the Democrats, sometimes with the Republicans and sometimes with neither of them. I’m more about the issues than a party agenda.” County legislators serve under term limit mandates, Schneiderman could run one last time this fall, but said this week, “I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot of what I set out to accomplish as a legislator. I feel like I may be more needed here in East Hampton. This is where my heart is.” Like Cantwell, Schneiderman reported overwhelming support from a diverse array of community members. “It’s been very flattering, so many people, from all sides of the political spectrum, have asked me to come back,” he said. If successful, Schneiderman wouldn’t be the first town supervisor to leave, then come back. Judith Hope, who was elected in 1973, left in 1976 to work with Governor Hugh Carey. She returned in’83 and won a re-election bid in 1985. At certain points Cantwell served alongside her on the town board dais. Town GOP Committee chair Kurt Kappel did not immediately return a call for comment. Although he has declined to comment definitively, insiders say Supervisor Bill Wilkinson won’t seek re-election. He did not respond to an email request for a statement. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Piazza Rejection Stings Flushing Faithful Maybe Mets fans should have seen it coming. Mike Piazza wasn’t ever going to be a first-ballot hall of famer. The taint of having been a power hitter during the game’s “steroid era” was too much for the Mets revered backstop to overcome.
Needing 75 percent of the baseball writers’ votes to gain admission, Piazza received only 57.8 percent. Only one Met, Tom Seaver, has ever been inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame wearing his blue and orange ball cap. In his 11-plus seasons with the Mets, Seaver earned 198 of his 311 career wins, struck out 2541 batters and sported a 2.57 ERA. Seaver defined the Mets successes of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s Gary Carter, emblematic of the Mets mid-late 1980’s successes, requested to go into the Hall of Fame as a Met. However, the writers believed “Kid’s” legacy was greater with the Montreal Expos (statistically correct) and decided he would enter the hall wearing the Expo’s red, white and blue cap. Mets fans, who already had

enough reasons to feel inadequate, felt dissed by the writers, especially considering Carter’s wishes. Doc Gooden and Darryl Strawberr y, two former Mets with impressive Queens resumes derailed their careers through substance abuse, making it unlikely that either player will ever gain admission to the hall. Mike Piazza’s accomplishments with the Mets from 1998 to 2005 were the primary spark behind the team’s successes during those years. Just a couple of years ago the question wasn’t “what if” regarding Piazza heading to Cooperstown, but rather would he go in with a Los Angeles Dodgers hat or a New York Mets cap. In May of 2010, Piazza chimed in with his two cents, “The bulk of my career was with the Mets,” he said, “and after going through the trade, then the drama of 9/11, I’ll never forget my Dodger days. But my time with the Mets is what I’ll remember most about my career.” It was a big sigh of relief for Mets fans who undoubtedly felt the same way. From helping lead the Mets to their only back-to-back postseason appearances (’99 and ’00), to his post 9/11 game-winning home run off Steve Karsay, Piazza brought Mets fans memories that will
last a lifetime. Additionally, for a franchise with only three sustained periods of success over its 51-year existence, Piazza will forever rank high atop the pantheon of New York Mets heroes. The rumors have always surrounded Piazza, but unlike McGwire, Bonds, and Clemens, there was nothing to prove the legendary catcher had used steroids. But, there was a certain doubt raised just by having played during baseball’s era of artificially enhanced statistics. Cardinal, Giant, and Yankee fans may accept that their players will never get in because of their direct link to the performance enhancers. Fortunately, these fans have lots of other hall of famers to be proud of. For Mets fans, Piazza’s denial is just one more disappointment along the trail of heartbreak that Mets fans choose to travel. The cross-town Yanks have 17 players enshrined in Cooperstown while the Mets have just one. As the Mets continue to retool and search for their next winning formula, let’s hope Mike Piazza will soon achieve the recognition that his career so richly deserves.
