Board Keeps On Truckin’ By Kitty Merrill
There’s a difference between running a business out of a residentially-zoned property and simply parking a commercial vehicle there. According to Alex Walter, chief of staff for East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell, illegal commercial operations in residential zones are the focus of the proposed truck law under discussion by the town board. Lawmakers were slated to take up the topic during their work session held yesterday as The Independent went to press. An earlier version, which set strict limits on the size of vehicles that may be parked overnight at residences was considered too stringent by contractors and
workers and too lax by homeowners besieged by noisy ad-hoc businesses in their neighborhood. A more recent iteration of the initiative was debuted just before Christmas. Pickup trucks, provided they don’t have company lettering on them, would not be regulated. Up to two “lettered” pickups would be permitted to park overnight at a home. The December revision allowed vehicles up to 14,500 gross vehicle weight could be parked at a home, so long as it belongs to a licensed home improvement contractor (or his employee) who lives in the house. A small F450 dump truck is an example of the type of vehicle that could qualify as an exception to the law. The truck must be screened from neighbors and the roadway,

and contractors who own and live at their property would have to register with the town clerk to seek the exception.
Object to “Amnesty” Carol Buda and Connie Kenny both take exception to the exception concept. Addressing the town board during last Thursday night’s meeting, they characterized the exception as amnesty -- “outrageous amnesty,” according to Buda, who said the current draft makes her

and her neighbors want to cry. Officials argued the latest version recognizes that some sole proprietors keep big trucks parked overnight and need them to get back and forth to jobsites, and have, in some cases, for generations. It’s a misrepresentation to characterize the big trucks as “preexisting,” Buda asserted. She and neighbors who have been crying out for relief bought their homes before the big trucks arrived in the hamlet around eight to 10 years ago. “We pre-exist the big trucks, not the other way around,” she said. The proposal picks winners and losers, downgrades zoning, and “is unfair to the majority of us,” she said. The town board convened a committee comprised of homeowners and contractors in an effort to develop a proposal that both sides could accept. Over the course of a half dozen meetings, neither side would compromise, Walter related. Buda and Kenny were both representatives of homeowners on the committee.

YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND, INDEED I’m a terrible kisser. It goes back to when I was 13 years old and tried to kiss Rose, my first date, in the balcony of the Kingsway Movie theater and I missed her mouth by three and a half inches and wound up kissing the side of her nose and the bottom of her right eye. I also have a problem with those sophisticated “double kiss” women who, when you kiss them on one cheek, snap their head around so you can kiss them on the other cheek. Once, in my awkward bumbling way, when a woman turned for her second cheek kiss I was so thrown off I wound up with her hoop earring in my mouth. The thought of swallowing her earring made me giggle like a fool and the woman moved away from me fast, thinking I was demented. Then there’s hugging. I’m mediocre at hugging most women. When they give me a big hug I’m conscious of their breasts pressing against me and I jump away as if I were being electrocuted. And I’m a complete disaster when

it comes to the disgusting habit men have of hugging each other when they meet or leave each other. A simple handshake is not enough, and so there’s the hug. Then men sort of move their feet in a little dance in order to get into a position where they don’t press against each other from the waist down. I call that the “Genital Shuffle.” But compared to Secretary of State John Kerry, I’m Mr. Smooth. In the history of the world there was never anyone as awkward and silly-looking as Kerry was in his hugging and kissing French President Francois Hollande. What a mess. I can just hear the conversation between Kerry and President Barack Obama. Kerry: “Why me? Why do I have to go?” Obama: “Because I didn’t go. And John, you know I couldn’t go. It’s not easy leading from behind. “It would have been embarrassing for me to admit that ISIS even exists. I said they were third-rate terrorists. I said we had defeated them and that Al Qaeda is finished and on the run.

There was no way I was going to show up in Paris. The only thing I regret is missing the photo op. I could just see myself leading 40 world leaders and a million demonstrators. “I guess, for the Obama Library, I can have them Photoshop me standing just a few steps ahead of British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. “In 20 years the world will think I was there. This is a great country. Nobody remembers anything. “Besides, I had something to do the next day. Love those San Antonio Spurs. “And for some of my followers, who love me no matter what I say or do, nothing says ‘committed to stopping terrorism’ like meeting with a bunch of seven-foot basketball players who are world champions. “I’ve also got a picture of me with Spurs MVP Kawhi Leonard, which is a lot better that taking a picture with that Israeli pain in the ass Netanyahu. “Besides, who was I going to send to Paris? Joe Biden? Can you imagine seeing a photo of that laughing fool smiling that dopey smile standing between David Cameron and Angela Merkel? “I would have been better off sending Al Sharpton. Love that man. He’s my kind of a guy. Al worries about the little people. He’s a man who knows how to work up a crowd. “So, John, it’s now up to you to finally do something to help this

administration other than racking up a million miles flying to one embarrassing meeting after another. We’ve written a little speech for you. You start by saying: “‘My visit to France is basically to share a big hug with Paris and express the affection of the American people for France and for our friends there who have been through a terrible time.’ “Now let’s talk about the hug. I want it to be big. I want your hug to make the front pages of every newspaper. I want people to forget I wasn’t there. Grab Hollande, pick him up and hug and kiss him. I was thinking, if you can get at his neck give him a hickey. Nothing says love to the French better than a hickey. Besides, beneath it all, Hollande’s French and you know how kinky those French are. Kiss him hard enough and you’ll have him pumping against your leg like a horny puppy. “Now for the music. This was Michelle’s idea: Get a name performer to do a great song to warm up the French. I wanted to get Simon and Garfunkel to reunite and sing ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water,’ but my advisers think it would be seen as my admitting that ISIS is important enough to trouble our water. “So instead we will have James Taylor and he’s going to sing ‘You’ve Got a Friend.’ “And John, here’s what I want you to do during the line ‘You just call out my name, and you know wherever I am, I’ll come running.’ You squeeze Hollande’s hand and whisper that line and tell him that line comes from me, Barack Obama, and everyone knows Barack Obama never lies.” If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@dfjp.com.

Local Hospitals Come Together By Emily Toy
Earlier this month Stony Brook University Hospital and Southampton Hospital moved a proposed affiliation agreement forward, with what some are calling a long overdue action to improve healthcare services on the East End. Following a unanimous vote earlier this month at the State University of New York Board of Trustees meeting in Albany, the affiliation is slated to enable the two hospitals to work more closely, ultimately improving healthcare quality and access as well as coordination and efficiency for patient care. According to a press release from both entities, under the terms of this affiliation Southampton Hospital will provide care under Stony Brook University Hospital’s New York State operating license. Southampton Hospital Association will continue to employ the workforce of Southampton Hospital, who will remain in their current labor agreement. Building a new hospital at the Stony Brook/Southampton campus is the ultimate goal, though there are still more hurdles to jump
before construction can begin. “Today the SUNY Board of Trustees has taken a critical step in advancing a regional plan that I have made a priority throughout my career- providing access to affordable, quality healthcare in eastern Suffolk County,” said Senator Ken LaValle, Chairman of the New York State Senate Higher Education Committee. Stony Brook University Hospital and Southampton Hospital have a long history of a strong, cooperative working relationship, according to the press release dated January 13. Having been formally affiliated since 2008, the two hospitals are working collaboratively to provide healthcare services to the South Fork. In addition to Stony Brook School of Medicine having joint clinical and academic programs with Southampton Hospital, in 2012 leadership from both medical institutions signed a non-binding letter of intent to strengthen that affiliation in which the 125-bed Southampton facility would join the Stony Brook Medicine healthcare system. “Building a regional healthcare delivery system will ensure the
viability of both Stony Brook Hospital and our community hospitals throughout the area,” LaValle continued. “With this vote we take a major step forward in building on the excellent healthcare system in Southampton and ensuring that residents have access to specialists and vital services close to home.” The affiliation will combine a financially sound community hospital with a high-quality tertiary academic medical center to improve healthcare delivery and education in the rapidly changing landscape of healthcare reform. “This affiliation will help create a health care delivery system that will better service the needs of Long Islanders, with access to primary and specialty services on the South Fork through an integrated system that provides a full continuum of care,” said L. Reuven Pasternak, MD, Chief Executive Officer, Stony Brook University Hospital and Vice President for Health Systems, Stony Brook Medicine. “The affiliation will also enhance the quality of healthcare on Long Island; it will integrate health care operations which will foster

innovations and improvements in clinical care, education, medical research and community involvement in Suffolk County.” The newly installed agreement now requires the approval of various New York State regulatory and legislative authorities, including the New York State Attorney General’s Office and the New York State Office of the State Comptroller. A Certificate of Need must also be filed and approved by the New York State Department of Health to transfer Southampton’s licensed beds to Stony Brook University Hospital’s license. Under this agreement, while these state processes are underway, Southampton and Stony Brook w i l l mo v e fo r w ard w i t h t h e process of clinical, academic and administrative integration. “There is still work to be done, but this is an extraordinarily important first step as we look at the future of Stony Brook University Hospital and our ability to compete in a crowded marketplace, but on in which we are excelling,” said Samuel L. Stanley Jr., President, Stony Brook University. “For both Southampton Hospital and for Stony Brook University Hospital, this is a win-win in every sense of the word. We are taking two very strong institutions and strengthening both of them through this action.”

SWCRF Scientists Win Grant For Cancer Research The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation’s philosophy of collaboration among scientists across cancer research institutes has aided two renowned research teams from Israel and China in securing a major grant for a joint project examining the roles of two proteins in the onset of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Shai Izraeli, M.D., Sheba Medical Center at Tel Aviv University, and Sai-Juan Chen, M.D., Ph.D., the Shanghai of Hematology, both longtime funded SWCRF researchers, will serve as principal investigators in new research coordinated through a partnership between the Natural Science Foundation of China and the Israel Science Foundation and funded by the Chinese and Israeli governments. The grant, approved last December, was submitted to the partnered foundations after Dr. Izraeli consulted about it with SWCRF founder and CEO Samuel Waxman, M.D., who recommended he and Dr. Chen combine resources on their compatible work.

“This is exciting news for AML research because this grant augments the brain trust of two renowned centers for cancer investigation and demonstrates how the Waxman Foundation facilitates opportunities to advance research through networking and scientific exchange,” said Dr. Waxman. “We’re very proud of Drs. Izraeli and Chen and look forward to seeing how their project progresses.” The study leverages the expertise of the Tel Aviv team led by Dr. Izraeli in the area of ERG, a gene that can
cause cancer, and investigators working under Dr. Chen in Shanghai who are recognized for their work relating to GATA2, a regulator of gene expression in cells that selfrenew. Working together, the researchers aim to better understand the dynamics of these transcription factors in the formation of AML, a blood cancer characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal white blood cells that accumulate in the bone marrow and interfere with the production of normal blood cells. Intelligent people don’t gravitate towards newspaper work -- that’s just the way it is.) If there are any doubters out there, allow me to present some actual questions posed by reporters at Super Bowl press events, which, by the way, the players MUST attend or face huge fines.
I should technically want to go to the Super Bowl, since I am kind of in the business -- you know, fantasy football and all. It’s certainly not the money. Karen will no doubt encourage me to blow five grand on a trip to Arizona to bed down with four goons in a cheap motel 80 miles from the game and swill cheap beer and pass gas. She’ll want me to spend $1500 for a ticket in the fourth deck at the University of Phoenix Stadium, approximately a quarter mile from the field, where even those obscenely overweight offensive linemen will appear to be the size of red ants. The Super Bowl is in two weeks, but the hoopla starts now. It is an event that amply showcases the intellectual limitations of not only the players, but also the media representatives. And that’s why I’ll pass on the trip to the big game. That will leave me more money to go to the 50th Anniversary of the Grateful Dead, which is July 4 through 6 in Chicago. Packages start a $3000, but it will cost considerably more when you factor in the hallucinogens we’ll need. Q: What did one Grateful Dead fan who couldn’t find LSD say to another Grateful Dead fan who couldn’t find LSD at a Grateful Dead concert? A: This music sucks, man. Back in the day they gave the stuff cute little names like “Strawberry Field and “Purple Haze. It was supposed to be Lysergic acid diethylamide, which doesn’t sound very inviting. We found out later most of the cute crap was rat poison and junk like that. It just sounded better if the drug peddlers said, “Pssst you wanna buy some Sunshine? Ever cautious, I always waited an hour after the other guys took acid, and always took half as much. That way I avoided those little, cute LSD anecdotal moments like the time James Svoboda had a bad trip and decided he was a caterpillar. We calmed him down by convincing him he was a moth instead. Unfortunately for all concerned, we were at the Grand Canyon at the time, but I digress. Here are some facts that may surprise (and scare) you.

Americans consume more food on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year. Americans will eat 1.23 billion chicken wings. That’s a lot of chickens that will never lay another egg. Eighty million avocados will be used making guacamole and 11 million pounds of assorted chips will be used to scoop it up. There will be 200 million gallons of beer downed – there are only 316 million people in the entire country. Either some people are going to get incredibly drunk, or there are a lot more illegal immigrants here than we were led to believe. There will be 4000 tons of popcorn consumed, which is staggering. I bet no more than 10 kernels will have any sort of real butter on it. Six percent of us call in sick to work the day after the Super Bowl. Antacid sales increase by 20 percent that day. No one takes LSD for the Super Bowl. With Katy Perry booked for halftime it’s a bad trip waiting to happen. But I’d rather see her in a miniskirt than some old, wrinkled up rock star who was cool in 1970. Plus, she’s kissed a girl and that turns me on. The impetus for the Dead anniversary is profound. It’s a gift to all the Deadheads who faithfully followed the band around all these years. It’s a chance for us to bond as one. It’s an opportunity to renew old friendships and reminisce about . . . taking rat poison and flipping out. All the original band members will be there except for Jerry Garcia, who wanted to take some drug with a cute name and bond with the Deadheads. So he overdosed on heroin.

EDITORIAL Big Trucks
The controversy continues to rage in East Hampton, and both sides are becoming more entrenched. On one side, there are the residents who feel commercial vehicles over a certain size don’t belong in a residential neighborhood. On the other, it’s locals who work for a living, and like their fathers before them, rely on their trucks to make ends meet. Naturally, the debate is limited to working class neighborhoods like Springs – we don’t see many dump trucks south of the highway that are owned locally – we see them coming in and out in the “trade parade” from upisland. There is no easy answer. In a perfect world the town would provide ample room to allow owners of commercial vehicles to park their rigs. Our stance is that property owners should be able to park their work vehicle in their own yard – notice we said vehicle, as in one big truck. More than that is a commercial operation, and commercial operations shouldn’t be run on sleepy residential side streets where kids wait for the school bus. We think the East Hampton Town Board has taken pains to study the issue with care and concern for all involved. The law currently on the table allowed some leeway for

Ever-Escalating
Dear Editor, Not only do East Hampton Township residents have to endure tax increases above the cap but then we aren’t eligible for the New York State rebate. Once again this is the result of the everescalating school taxes. Has anyone in this school district ever heard of zero-based budgeting? Start from zero and evaluate the costs and need of everything rather than constantly increasing the budget each year. That’s what businesses have to do in order to survive. School taxes remain out of control and need real management. JIM-AMAGANSETT

work trucks – and some relief for neighbors. The truck must be screened from the roadway, and contractors who own and live at their property would have to register with the town clerk. The grey area is a provision that larger trucks may be allowed if the owner petitions the town. Another is an “amnesty” for truck owners who have operated the same way for generations – their livelihood depends on the status quo. We can’t put folks out of business, that’s for sure. It would be nice if the town took another look at providing some of its land for parking, a proposal that was floated earlier in the process. If the owner of a big rig could park, say, on a vacant field near the airport free of charge and drive his car back and forth, it would seem that would be a win-win solution for all concerned. Better still, it would be an example of government and neighbors working hand in hand to forge a compromise that would appease all concerned. That said, we suspect there are two different things at play here, and the town board, we believe, realizes this: too many people are running commercial operations out of their homes. This is against the law, and violators need to be brought into compliance.
various countries and 1.3 million people participated in anti-terrorism events in Paris. President Obama was AWOL. It is difficult to believe our President overlooked the need to be in Paris for the anti-terrorism rally. Based on his previous comments it is quite possible he decided he did not want to offend Islam by appearing at the anti-terrorism unity march. In the past he has refused to label the multitude of attacks conducted by Muslims as Islamic terrorist attacks. He said, “We are not at war with Islam,” but it sure appears Islam is at war with us. After all, what is the religion of almost every terrorist who has attacked Western civilization in the past 50 years? President Obama, you just offended every freedom loving person in the world. The very thought that this Gohmert moron would lead as Speaker of the Republican House of Representatives was inconceivable. The man is, for fear of being redundant, an absolute ignorant imbecile or an ignocile. That he would even be considered was frightening enough to wish all the best to Boehner. Let us hope he can maneuver around the Teastructive element of the Party and get some positive things done for the real people of our country and not the 5/4 Supreme Court’s reinvention of “Corporations” as “People.” America should not be up for sale to the highest bidder, regardless of what our self-serving Conservative Supreme Court chose to define as the American voter. No assault rifle shot Ronald Reagan. No assault rifle shot John Lennon. No assault rifle shot Gabriella Giffords. No assault rifle shot John Kennedy. No assault rifle shot Bobby Kennedy. No assault rifle shot Martin Luther King. These people were shot with common revolvers and bolt-action rifles - a 150 year old technology. The ONLY differences between what Andrew Cuomo’s law calls a semi-auto assault rifle (which is in fact, according to the Defense Department a SMG - small machine gun) and a semi-auto hunting rifle are: The so-called assault rifle has a plastic stock and plastic pistol grip, and the semi-auto hunting rifle has a wood stock and wood revolver grip. According to Governor Cuomo who knows about as much about assault rifles, crime statistics, and Constitutional Law as I do about flying the space shuttle, inert plastic is more dangerous attached to a rifle than inert wood, and therefore it needed to be outlawed by arm-twisting New York’s legislators, law enforcement officers, medical professionals, and its well-meaning citizens. Assault rifles, which are in fact machine guns, have been made illegal since the 1930s and since have never been sold in the State of New York or most states. As such, on this two-year anniversary of Governor Cuomo’s New York SAFE Act which banned the most popular and common civilian rifles, not assault rifles, we should be eternally grateful to President Obama for coming to New York to threaten and then force a sitting African-American governor out of office. This, as political payback for Andrew’s running HUD (Housing and Urban Development) into the ground, Obama handed to Cuomo on a silver platter the NY governor’s seat. In other words, The Empty Chair in the Oval Office duplicated another Empty Chair in Albany. The record: Since the New York SAFE ACT passed two years ago with Cuomo arm-twisting other legislators behind closed doors in the middle of the night without input from law enforcement, medical professionals, or even New York’s citizens (on the premise of necessity to protect children), ZERO children have been killed with assault

Favorite Academy Award nominated movies? Renee Charles I liked Grand Budapest Hotel. And St. Vincent, with Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy. Naomi Watts plays the hooker. She was really fantastic. Everyone in it was great. I was very surprised Bill Murray wasn’t nominated. He was absolutely superb.
Larry Liddle I’ve been trying to see as many of the nominees as possible. But I think my favorite so far has been Boyhood. I liked the directing and the mood of it. I liked the pace of it and how they actually shot the film over 12 years. It was a directorial tour de force.
Sandy Jungck I haven’t seen that many of the nominees but the one I did see was a really good one. Melissa McCarthy and Bill Murray were in such a great movie. St. Vincent. It was really very funny and every one of the performances was just terrific.
Alice Bell American Sniper is such an outstanding movie. I think that the story really rings true. And I think it opens our eyes to a lot of things we may not have been aware of. And Bradley Cooper gives such a great performance. Really top notch.

rifles; and 3 million New Yorkers’ civil and property rights had been violated. Since the AR (Armalite Rifle, not “assault rifle”) went into common use a half century ago and was designed only for civilians and never for the military, up to Cuomo’s Law, ZERO children have been killed with assault rifles in New York State and 3 million New Yorkers’ civil and property rights have not been violated. These facts made having had no law for a half century 26 times as effective preventing the deaths of New York’s children as having had passed The New York SAFE Act. It also affirms that leftwing-liberal gun grabbers’ obsession fabricating unconstitutional law based on fabricated statistics violate and steal the constitutional rights of millions of the state’s peaceable citizens by removing their means to self-defense on their own property and in their homes, was an absolutely “necessity.” Incidentally, Swiss and Israeli males,
many, if not most of who own machine guns, real assault rifles, in their homes, with children and women and even mother-in-laws on the premises - killed no one today. Since the liberalization of shall-issue (mandatory) licensing of handguns across the states began under President William Jefferson Clinton in 1992 thanks to Clinton’s Assault Weapons Ban followed by lobbying by the NRA’s patriotic Americans who insist on enforcing the law, including the 2nd Amendment law, the ownership of firearms across the USA have more than doubled, possibly tripled, whilst violent crimes using firearms have more than been halved. Piers Morgan may be surprised, but more guns = less crime. In 2014 President Obama was called “the most successful gun salesman of the century” by Newt Gingrich. It’s his only genuine, documented accomplishment so far, that has benefited mankind. A. BENJAMIN

According to teachers and Project MOST group leaders, Cormac Orr’s charisma and positive attitude made him the ideal candidate to lead East Hampton Village. Last Friday, the nine year old was honored by the village board and named mayor for
the day. A Special Olympics double gold medalist, Cormac has a passion for computers and is designing his own computer game. Rebecca Taylor from the after school program Project MOST described him as a hard worker who’s willing to try new things, even if he doesn’t like them. Happy 375th, Southampton By Emily Toy
This year, Southampton Town turns 375 years old. Since its founding in 1640, Southampton has morphed from a once thriving port and economic center for the colonies to a highly prosperous town with large estates, beautiful beaches, and booming businesses. Residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity throughout the year to celebrate the history of New York’s oldest English settlement with special events. Already in the works are a convocation of local historians, a ball at the Southampton Center, a special celebration at the annual Fourth of July parade, a history festival, and countless educational talks, lectures, and presentations. And it
all starts tomorrow afternoon. All are welcome to the first of the yearlong lecture series with “A Brief History of North Sea. Tomorrow at 3 PM, enjoy a talk covering the tumultuous cultural changes in Southampton during the 17th century and the development of an important colonial port known as Feversham, now called North Sea, whose history has been lost. “Feversham was the third largest port in the colonies, said Tom Edmonds, Executive Director of the Southampton Historical Museum. “It really was like a little Ellis Island. Edmonds, who is spearheading the events for the anniversary, is excited for the yearlong celebration. “1640 changed the East End of Long Island forever, he said. “And that’s the focus for this year.
According to Edmonds, lots of people, from town officials and business owners to residents and visitors alike, are coming together and adding something to the anniversary events. “There are about 40 organizations and businesses participating in this, Edmonds said. On March 7, it’s the 375th Convocation Celebration at the First Presbyterian Church on Main Street in Southampton at 3 PM. The towns and Presbyterian Church in both Southampton and Southold all began in 1640. To celebrate the founding of all four entities a festive assembly will be held with speakers, music and poetry. Included in the fun will be Suffolk County Legislators Al Krupski and Jay Schneiderman as

well as the Reverends Dr. Peter Kelly from Southold and Dr. Richard Boyer from Southampton. Over the summer, there will be a rededication of the monument at Conscience Point, where historians believe the first settlers landed. According to Southampton Village Mayor Mark Epley, “Tom Edmonds has done a nice job of pulling a lot of people together. The [Southampton Historical] Museum has really taken a lead on it. Epley, along with Southampton Town Clerk Sundy Schermeyer, David Bunn Martine (director of the Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum), and Micah Schlendorf (chairman of the Hamptons Visitors Council) to name a few, is a part of a committee behind organizing events for the anniversary celebration. “To have the village participating, and with all the educational pieces happening throughout the year we can all learn more and more about the history of Southampton, Epley said.

Manning, Bees Avoid Upset Bid Independent / Rick Murphy
The legend grows: Charles Manning Jr. erupted for 40 points and 23 rebounds against Southold.
The Bridgehampton Killer Bees now have clear sailing to go undefeated in League VIII, but it didn’t come easy. Credit the third place Southold Settlers, who came into the Beehive Thursday night facing the daunting task of knocking the Bees off their perch. The visitors had a simple plan – bomb away. And thanks to Liam Walker and Pat Mcfarland, the strategy of trading three-pointers for deuces damn near worked. Upset was in the air early on. The Bees’ Charles Manning, who is rapidly emerging as one of Suffolk’s premier players, took all of 90 seconds to get in foul trouble and take a seat on the bench. He was soon followed by Josh Lamison, the team’s second highest scorer. Without the duo the team bumbled and stumbled through a
nondescript first half, even falling behind, 20-18. Manning went on a mini-tear near the end of the second stanza and the Bees opened a 10-point lead though Southold cut it to five by the buzzer. The Bees turned up the heat in the second half. Manning and Lamison were controlling the boards but the Bees kept missing foul shots – with the exception of Elijah Jackson, who converted all three on a missed trey that upped the score to 60-48. Southold kept bombing away – Walker tallied 31 on the night and nailed seven treys – but any thought of an upset slowly evaporated. To say Manning caught fire would be an understatement: in one seven second span he put back a missed shot, stole the ball, scored, stole the ball, and fed off for another basket. In the fourth quarter, he set up

on defense by guarding the player who received the inbounds pass and stole the ball several times. During one breathtaking stretch he scored a dozen points in no more than a minute or so. The Bees’ coaching staff credited him with 13 rebounds. The Independent’s tally was 23 rebounds to go with five steals, four assists and two blocks and oh yes, 40 points. Lamison shared the spotlight, grabbing whatever rebound came near him and powering his way through the paint to the tune of 24 points and 15 rebounds. Jackson and Tylik Furman contributed 10 each. In addition to Walker’s 31, Mcfarland tallied 11 and Pat Mejsak 12. The finale was a comfortable 86-72 despite 12 three-pointers by
the visitors. The Bees are now 9-0 in the league and 11-0 overall, with a trip upstate later in the month for two non-league games, the only things standing between the team and an undefeated season, which hasn’t happened in nearly three decades. Southold 5-3 and 7-5, is in the drivers’ seat to gain a berth in the Class C playoffs. Bridgehampton, a Class D school, is a serious contender for the state title. Stony Brook, second place in League VIII, had its shot at the Bees at home on January 13 but the visitors simply had too much firepower. A 12-2 second quarter spurt gave the Bees a comfortable double-digit lead the team never relinquished. The fluid offense hummed along on all five cylinders: Manning scored 22, Lamison 17, Furman 13, Jackson 12, and three-point specialist Matt Hostetler nine, all on threes. Stony Brook (5-2, 9-3 overall) is still considered the team to beat in the Suffolk Class C playoffs.

Bonackers Making Their Move By Rick Murphy
On paper, it looked like a mismatch. After all, ShorehamWading River was the first place team in League VI. Moreover, the Wildcats held a significant height advantage over their opponents, the East Hampton Bonackers. But a well-coached team, playing intelligent basketball as a unit, can overcome a lot of obstacles. Saturday morning in East Hampton, the Bonackers provided ample proof, bested the visitors 58-48 and moved into contention for the league title. The strategies were clearly defined going into the fray: Shoreham would try and pound the ball to its big men inside. East Hampton, meanwhile, has earned its reputation as a team that lives and dies with the three point shot, so the Tigers tried to take that away from their opponents. They played right into the hands

of East Hampton’s coach, Billy McKee. It helps to have players that know what the game plan is. And, yes, you need skilled players, too. Kevin Fee doesn’t jump out at you. He isn’t tall, he doesn’t play above the rim, but make no mistake about it - he’s got game. “He’s very good – he sees the court. He played a phenomenal game,” said assistant coach Bob Vacca. Fee would nail a trey, but when the defense moved up on him, he’d skate by, pull up, and drill a midrange jumper. Best of all, he’s only a sophomore – in fact, the entire starting five will be back next season. On defense Bonac crowded the paint and let the Tigers bomb away, usually without much success. Still, the teams traded baskets for much of the game, and Bonac clung to a five-point lead going into the fourth quarter, when poise and experience took over. Fee was everywhere, grabbing rebounds (he finished with 11), and coming up with key steals. Backcourt mate Brenden KennedyGay, an unselfish, smooth and quick guard, nailed a crucial three-pointer down the stretch and dished off for five scores. The backbreaker was a nifty feed from Regis O’Neil (six points) to Brandon Johnson coming off a Fee steal. Fee ended with a career-high 30 and Kennedy-Gay added 14. Jonah Caldwell had 18 and Ethan Wiederkehr added 13 for Shoreham, which dropped to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in League VI. Bonac plays at Amityville tomorrow at 7 PM. Thursday East Hampton handed Bayport-Blue Point its first league loss of the season, and may have set a record. Bonac bombed for 17 treys, and no one can remember the last time a team hit for more. McKee hit for six en route to a

game high 27 points, Fee hit for six and scored 20 and Kennedy-Gay hit for five, and made three field goals and three foul shots without missing the entire game. The final was a comfortable – and shocking – 76-51 blowout. The Southampton Mariners continue their march towards a perfect season, moving to 12-0 by crushing Mattituck 98-68 Saturday evening. The Tuckers hung around for a half but buckled in the third stanza when Southampton turned things up a notch. Zach Cummings led a balanced attack with 23 points, Nasies Fulford had 18, Israel Johnson 16 and Isaiah Johnson 12. Fulford had 12 rebounds and Gene Scott added 10. All-Suffolk candidate point guard Isaiah Johnson recorded eight assists and Cummings added five. The Mariners have a showdown
with second place Babylon on the road Tuesday. Southampton is 8-0 in League VII. Mattituck, which dropped to 4-4, was led by Wil Gildersleeve (14), Ryan Monday (14), and Peter Tuthill (11). The Tuckers travel to Wyandanch Friday afternoon. Pierson wants into the playoffs. Thursday the Whalers won their third in a row, and in the process dealt Shelter Island a near-fatal blow. Ben Kushner scored 20 for the home team as Pierson coasted to a 67-46 victory to even its League VIII mark at 4-4. Sean Sloan added 12 points, Andrew James 11 and Robbie Evjen 10 points and 20 boards. Sloane dished off for eight more buckets. Bill Boeklin had 22 and Tristan Wissemann 15 for the Islanders, who dropped to 2-4 in League VIII. Shelter Island, the defending Suffolk County Class D champion, needs to finish with a .500 mark to qualify in all likelihood. Pierson plays at home Friday at 6:15 against Smithtown Christian.

Babylon upset Hampton Bays Saturday, handing the Baywomen their first League VII loss of the season and further tightening the League VII race. Babylon’s Shannon Hartigan scored with three seconds left to upend the locals. The two teams traded the lead throughout the tension-filled affair. Alex Fotopoulos, Hampton Bay’s all-state candidate and Suffolk’s fourth highest scorer, gave Babylon fits all night and finished with 31 points. Hannah Reed added 15. Riverhead is charging towards a playoff berth. The Lady Waves, playing in League III, took out West Islip 56-49 at home Friday. The win gives Riverhead with a 5-2 mark, good for second place in the league. The Waves go-to player, senior Sam Dunn, scored 21 points and dominated the paint with 20 rebounds. Faith Johnson-DeSilvia added 11. Riverhead plays at Half Hollow Hills West tomorrow at 4:30 PM. Hartigan had 20 for the victors and Kristen Altieri went off for 21. Babylon is now 4-2 in the league and 8-5 overall. Hampton Bays dropped to 5-2 in the league and are 11-2 overall. Mattituck is right there, too, because two days earlier the Lady Tuckers, playing at home, beat Babylon 45-37. Katie Hoeg scored 18, Liz Dwyer 15, and the pair combined for 29 rebounds. Emily Guerra led the Lady Panthers with 13 and Altieri added 11. Never count out the tournament tested Pierson/Bridgehampton Lady Whalers. The locals moved to 4-2 in League VIII by besting Mercy Saturday on the road, 39-36. Erica Selyukova turned in a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards and Nia Dawson tallied a game high 11 points. Southold/Greenport also has designs on the Suffolk Class C tournament – the Lady Settlers knocked off Pierson on January 13, 47-34 as Madison Tabor exploded for 27 points. Isabel Peters had 11 for the Lady Whalers. Southold is 3-1 in league action.
