Throne-Holst Will Run Again

Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst said this week she is running for reelection – the question is whether anyone will step up to challenge her.

The two-time incumbent is a lock to receive the Independence and Democratic Party endorsements.

But the GOP, which for decades controlled the town, couldn’t even muster up a suitable opponent against Throne-Holst two years ago. Former Town Supervisor Linda Kabot stepped up to run as a writein candidate after Councilman Chris Nuzzi declined the nomination from the GOP Convention floor.

Throne-Holst said she might

reach out to the Republicans with an eye on a cross-endorsement. “If you look at my agenda it straddles all the parties’ goals, especially keeping the line on taxes.” A cross-endorsement from the GOP would “show the public we are moving above partisan bickering.”

William Wright, the chairman of the Town Republican Committee, did not rule anything out, although he stressed it was early in the process.

“Everything is on the table as of now. Our main goal is to work together,” Wright said. “At the same time, we’d love to put up a [Republican] candidate,” Wright said.

The town is still reeling from a scandal involving the Town Police Street Crimes Unit, which is being investigated by the Suffolk County District Attorney. In addition, the town board took a hit when its hand picked choice for Police Chief, Bill Wilson, abruptly resigned after less than a year on the job.

The board purposely chose Wilson, the former Southampton Village Police Chief, instead of an in-house candidate, but he clashed with the board on a number of fronts and it became apparent his appointment was a mistake. The board has since tapped Robert Pearce, a captain with the town police, to take over the helm.

“So much bad stuff happened,” Throne-Host said. “We can argue about it until we die or we can rise above party politics and move ahead with the chief we have in place.”

Both Republican town board members are up for reelection, Nuzzi and Jim Malone. Wright said he “hasn’t gotten a sense one way or the other” whether Nuzzi wanted to run; he hasn’t spoken to Malone.

Nuzzi did not return a phone call for comment.

Kabot is the wildcard in the supervisor’s race. Though ThroneHolst has beaten her in the last two elections, both were tainted victories. In 2009 Westhampton Beach Village Police arrested Kabot on a bogus driving while intoxicated charge just a month before the election. She was acquitted of the charge after the election.

In 2011 Kabot lost but received over 3200 votes, a shocking amount of write-ins. “I haven’t heard from Linda,” Wright said, “but that doesn’t mean I don’t think she is interested. I don’t know.”

Kabot did not return an email asking for a comment.

I COULD LIE TO YOU I could lie to you and give you a million reasons why I’m writing such a short column.

I could whine and tell you I’m not even paid a penny to write these columns and many of you might mutter, “If this fool was paid a penny a column, he would be overpaid.”

But enough. Let me tell you the truth. It’s Super Bowl week. Next to Christmas it’s my favorite week of the year. I love you all, but I have no desire to write a column today.

I’m going spend every waking hour trying to pick a winner in the game. Yes, I know I made a convincing argument in this week’s Independent as to why you should take the 3 1/2 points and go with Baltimore. But don’t listen to me.

Figure it out for yourself.

I’m on a high because I just figured out that this year I invested $100 on a bet at the beginning of the football season and today I’m $1,352 ahead betting football with my favorite bookie.

But here’s the best part: If gambling with a bookie was legal, thanks to Obama’s new capital gains tax I would owe him 20 percent of that $1,352, which comes to $270.40. And throw in another 3.8 percent ($51.37) to pay the Obama Care tab (my bookie doesn’t have a job – he’s a bookie so you and I now pay for his health care). Now I know I took all the risk and did all the work, but Obama wants to take $321.77 of my winnings.

So why am I so happy? Because gambling is illegal and betting with my bookie just put that $321.77 in my pocket instead of Obama’s.

And I get to keep the entire $1,352 I worked so hard for.

The moral of the story is if you want to pay your “fair share” to Obama, just keep working. The more you make, the more he takes.

However, if you want to keep your “fair share,” do what I plan to do for a living from now on – 7/27/12 4:33 PM gamble illegally.

Last Friday night in Aquebogue, they enjoyed their moment in the limelight, as the Southampton Town Kiwanis Club hosted its 43rd annual Police Awards dinner at The Vineyards.

was both the town’s Officer of the Year recipient and the top achiever named for the Howard Stock Memorial Award. She was the first woman to earn the award, which is given to the outstanding officer among East End agencies.

Man Killed In Flanders Shooting

A 21-year-old Flanders resident was shot and killed in his home early Sunday morning, according to Suffolk Police.

Police say Dimitri Hampton suffered a gunshot wound to his chest after an altercation with at least two men at his 200 Priscilla Avenue home at around 3:15 AM. “We believe at least two armed men broke into the house, there was a struggle, and the victim was shot,” said Detective Lieutenant Jack Fitzpatrick, from the Suffolk

County Police Homicide Squad.

Southampton Town Police were also called to the residence after a 911 caller reported that armed men broke into the home and shot a man.

According to Fitzpatrick there w e r e “s e v e r a l ” o t h e r p e o p l e residing in the house when police arrived, though he would not say an exact number. He would also not give any motive for the shooting.

“This appears to be a totally random crime,” said Southampton

“That neighborhood has its share or woes,” said Throne-Holst.

Benefit Concert: Ten Bands On Tap

The Gregg Rickards Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to allow the 2006 East Hampton High School graduate’s passion for music to live on, his mother, Teresa Rickards, told The Independent.

Following Rickards’ death last summer, his college roommate Ryan Adam Sadis wrote, “His passion for music motivated me to better myself.

His drive as a musician makes him without a doubt the best bassist I have ever met. Gregg spent hours talking me into not dropping out of school when things got tough and always reminded me that I had the potential to accomplish anything as long as I stopped messing around

and put my mind to it. I was lucky enough to share the stage, the studio, and a dorm with him.”

His mother described Rickards as “a gentle giant, a man of few words.”

But his love of music clearly touched the lives of those around him, as evidenced by the number of local musicians eager to participate in a concert honoring his memory. This Friday night, Rickards’ passion will live on at a memorial concert that’s drawn 10 individual musicians and bands, ready to entertain in their friend’s memory.

Michael Clark of Crossroads Music, one of the organizers of the concert, offered an overview of the evening’s lineup.

Rickards was a member of the Jazz Band in High School and the EHHS Fiddle Club, which will both perform.

Musicians Peter Weiss and Jane Hastey are on the roster. Said Clark, “Peter will play Gregg’s stand-up bass accompanied by his wife, Jane doing a few songs that Gregg’s parents requested. Peter was Gregg’s bass instructor.”

Members of the band Casanova Frankenstein played in Jazz Band with Rickards and “the drummer, Kevin Foran actually played with Gregg at college (Oneonta) as well,” Clark informed.

Monkfish, comprised of a current member of the Jazz Band and a previous member of Jazz Band, will perform original songs, while The Jet Set Renegades, also comprised of current members of the Jazz Band will be doing SKA type of music.

Former classmates in the local band, The Treetop Thieves, will offer original songs, while EHHS teacher Josh Brussels’ band of local guys, Little Head Thinks, brings classic rock and originals. The 3rd Estate and Mama Lee Rose & Friends round out the lineup.

Tom Bono has donated a specially customized guitar and amp set to the raffle, which also includes a framed photo by Dell Cullum Custom Photography. Admission is free, but donations to the scholarship fund will be accepted at the door.

Speaking of the outpouring of support and number of participants who stepped up to perform at Friday night’s concert, Teresa Rickards said, “It’s very touching, how we’re all coming together.”

Real Estate: Blistering Fourth Quarter Sales Buoy Market

Two weeks ago we reported that some significant home sales on the East End occurred in the waning days of the year as homeowners sought to avoid an increase in capital gains taxes. Actually, the tax didn’t increase, but reverted back to its previous level on January 1 after

having been cut by George W. Bush.

The full extent of the selloff wasn’t known until now, when most of the deed transfers have been recorded at the county center.

price of homes in the Hamptons in the last quarter of 2012 was over $2.1 million, a staggering 49.4 percent increase, according to the Elliman Report.

The numbers from the luxury market were even stronger. The average sale price of homes in the top 10 percentile rose to a staggering $9.8 million, an 85.4 percent increase. The same market segment in the third quarter saw a 31 percent increase.

Contrast the heady numbers in the Hamptons market with Long Island as a whole: the average sale price for the fourth quarter was $440,000, a decrease in 3.1 percent.

The bigger news, though, was the inventory glut that has stagnated the market for five years is ebbing.

According to Elliman there were 14574 listings on Long Island at year’s end, “the lowest year-end supply . . in more than eight years.”

As a result “price indicators edged higher as listing discount slipped.”

Surfers Deliver Dogs

The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons announced the arrival of two dogs rescued from Rincón, Puerto Rico, last week. Working with rescue partner Animal Rescue Foundation of Rincón (known as ARF Rincón) and two local surfers, the dogs arrived safely at the Adoption Center last Thursday.

John Robertson, for the second year in a row and his friend, Brian Powell, on their way back home to East Hampton from vacation in Rincón, offered to help transport these special dogs. The young men are familiar with both ARF Rincón and ARF of the Hamptons and agreed to fly with the small dogs (Nadia, a two year old male Chihuahua mix, and Pepé, a four month old Lab mix) to New York and deliver them to the ARF Adoption Center in Wainscott. The dogs need to be medically cleared by the ARF veterinarian, before being put up for adoption.

ARF Rincón, the Animal Rescue Foundation is a small, communitybased non-profit organization with the mission of reducing animal overpopulation, and raising animal consciousness in the town of Rincón.

For 15 years, ARF Rincón has been working to save lives, one animal at a time, by reducing the number of animals euthanized.

Coast Guard At Harbor Frost Visitors to the Sag Harbor Frost next month will be able to attend an informational event sponsored by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary free of charge.

At 10 AM Saturday at the Bay Street Theatre on Long Wharf the USCG will screen a video and hold a discussion on hypothermia hosted by Mark Chanski, a member of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Conservation.

The Montauk Coast Guard station will have its 47 foot Motor Life Boat on hand for free public tours. There will also be a discussion about the Coast Guard’s Search and Rescue program. The theatre is located on Long Wharf. Harbor Frost 2013 takes place February 8 to 10.

EDITORIAL Time To Finally Come Clean Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, her place in history assured and on the verge of retirement, had a chance to cement her legacy and set the record straight – and she muffed it.

Last week testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Clinton repeatedly tried to change history and continued to defend the big lie the administration told about the Benghazi consulate attack last September 11.

To digress, we like and admire Ms. Clinton. The Clintons are well liked in these parts, and are frequent visitors. The President is kind, he spends a lot of money locally, he’s a big tipper (that counts for a lot to us working stiffs), and the caddies at Atlantic Golf Course love him. Some of Hillary’s most ardent supporters, and biggest contributors, live out here. We welcome the news the couple is house-hunting out here.

But come on. The attack on the consulate was an organized, radical effort, not coincidentally occurring on 9/11, that had been “in the air” for quite some time. The administration was warned to beef up security there.

Instead, President Obama, locked in a tight race for his job, concocted one of the flimsiest cover stories to come out of Washington in quite some time – that some obscure YouTube video triggered the riots. Four Americans were killed including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, whose body was publicly defiled. Obama

It Is Wrong To The Editor, I live in the homeless shelter at Hidden Cove in Hampton Bays with my two children and have read the articles written. So I have decided to give my input.

I know nothing about zoning or town issues but what I do know is that the town of Hampton Bays is truly and unfairly putting residents in the middle of your fight over what to do with the hotel. We were not asked to be placed here and I myself am aware of how people in the town treat us because we are homeless and it is wrong. We get funny looks -- people see us walking down the street and act as if we have robbed them.

First, there are not more than three

people in a room and no one has to put cots together to sleep. We can and most do own their own car and no one is from out of state. Most are from the East End and like myself have been displaced because of Sandy.

It’s not fair how your writers have talked about us like we are not here, like we can’t read and like we don’t have a voice. To my knowledge no one stays here past six months and to read these articles about the kids going to the schools in the town -- what have we or our kids done to you?

Even if we didn’t live in this shelter I feel we still wouldn’t be welcomed in your town.

I’m not the only resident who wants to say something but the managers keep the articles away from us and don’t discuss the situation with us. I and most residents would like to attend a town hall meeting to hear with our own ears what’s really going on and how we affect your community.

Even our own intelligence officials were privately telling the press the real truth.

Obama continued his charade for a full week, even as the Secretary of State tried futilely to downplay the event.

The President was reelected. Ms. Clinton is resigning, but should she decide to run for president in 2016, this issue will haunt her. It’s time to come clean; the families of those murdered deserve the truth.

Systematic Inequities Dear Editor, The great economist and author of On The Road To Serfdom was a genius and a prophet. He foresaw what is taking place in America -- the rise of the demon socialism and all of its dire inequities.

What Frederick Hayek spoke and wrote about is now coming to pass, and is what we must make war against. Hayek implies socialism “systematically threatens the foundations of society.”

We ask, how is it to be recognized?

Hayek and many others have witnessed the rise of socialism over time. Do the laws of the land take from classes that which belongs to them to give to others? Does the law perform for the benefit of one person or group and to the detriment or injury of others?

This is what is taking place in America.

We are on the road to serfdom -- look around. We the people, with a declared government “of, by and for the people” must abolish these inequities without delay. They are not only in some cases unconstitutional, but illegal and immoral, as we have witnessed in New York State recently.

Bishops of the Catholic Church stated it is a fertile source of inequities and it invites further inequities that multiply over time until they become systematic.

Do you think schools should employ armed guards?

Bob Brown I think guns in schools are a bad idea. I think a better way to protect the children is to make sure that everybody who wants a gun is registered and thoroughly checked out. And without a doubt, assault weapons should be banned.

Leslie Kapon Absolutely not. More guns just mean more violence. We need to be aware when kids are being bullied or have problems and need our help. I also think that we have to stop selling assault weapons. There’s no reason a hunter needs an automatic assault rifle.

Marcia Gomes It’s a bad idea. But at the same time maybe it is a good idea. The world is so violent now. You want to protect your children but at the same time you don’t want to show them you need something like that. What a hard question. I don’t know how to answer it.

Good Quarter And Year For BNB Bridge Bancorp, Inc., the parent company of The Bridgehampton National Bank (BNB), announced fourth quarter and year end results for 2012 last week. Highlights of the company’s financial results for the quarter and year-end include: A 16 percent increase in fourth quarter net income over the previous year. For the year the net income, $12.8 million was 23 percent higher than in 2011 and represented income of $1.48 per share.

James Turits opened the evening in the Lecture Hall with an excerpt from his counterfactual film exploring what world events might have taken place had the assassination attempt on Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1939 been successful.

The next performance featured Dana Kyu Won Kan on the piano.

Dana received a standing ovation, and for an encore, returned to the stage to play the theme from Nintendo’s “Super Mario Brothers.”

Next, in the Court Theater Gabrielle Ment performed a graceful aerial hoop act, with poses that included hanging by her feet, her hips, one arm, and more. This

performance was followed by guitarist Antonia Strada, who accompanied a recording of two of her original compositions on her Fender Stratocaster. Pablo Kozatch demonstrated how music written in one style could be transformed to another, constructing a jazz arrangement of a Chopin Nocturne.

Next up, the bossa nova sounds of Sofia Kriger, who composed four songs that had been playing as the audience first entered the theater.

She performed one live for the audience, accompanied by Clark Hamilton on electric guitar. The evening ended with another aerial hoop performance by Gabrielle, dressed in a “strong man” costume and performing a comedic act in which she “blundered” through her routine.

Over 100 Spanish-speaking parents attended Ana Nunez’s high school discussion in the library last Thursday night. Ms. Nunez, who is the district’s community liaison, discussed school structure, grades, scheduling, and more. It was a lively discussion, and more will be held in the future. The East Hampton Lady Bonackers are positioned perfectly for a playoff berth after a convincing 64-51 win over Miller Place at home Friday.

Kaelyn Ward, who recently went over the 1000-point mark for her career, led the winners with 18 points. Emma Newberger and Carley Seekamp contributed 12 each; the win gave the locals a 5-3 League VI mark (7-4 overall), good for fourth place.

Elwood/Glenn comes in for a 6:45 game tomorrow. On Tuesday the locals play at Amityville.

Southampton keeps rolling in

League VII. The Lady Mariners moved to 8-0 on the season (10-3 overall) by besting Babylon at home Friday, 63-45. Paris Hodges, a senior who went over the 1000-point career mark recently, scored 18 points, had 11 rebounds, dished out for four scores, and recorded six steals.

Mariners, Pierson Suffer Losses

Southampton, in League VII, and Pierson, in League VIII, appeared to have the inside track at league titles — until last week.

On Thursday Babylon came into Southampton with a sparkling 8-1-league mark, second only to the Mariners’ perfect 9-0. But the Panthers walked out in a first place tie, upending the locals 6960. Credit Fernando Vasquez, who exploded for career high 32 points in addition to dishing out for nine more scores.

Devon Trent led the losers with 17, Lyle Smith scored 14 and Travon Smith added 11. The Mariners will look to regroup against Hampton Bays tomorrow at 4 PM at home.

Over in League VIII Pierson was also rolling along undefeated, winning its first eight games. That ended Friday, when the Whalers traveled to Greenport (5-3, 7-5 overall) and ran into a buzz saw, dropping a key matchup, 59-49, and falling a game behind Stony Brook.

Austin Hooks was the difference for the Porters, scoring 17 and grabbing 12 rebounds. Matt Dibble tallied 15 and Billy Doucet added 11. Jake Bennett paced the visitors

with 16. Forest Loesch (11) and Joey Butts (10) also reached double digits.

Pierson plays at Southold tomorrow and at the Beehive in Bridgehampton on Tuesday.

Riverhead (8-3, 11-3) moved into a first place tie in League III, besting East Islip 71-57 on the losers’ court.

Markim Austin drilled three treys en route to a game high 25 points.

Jeremiah Cheatom chipped in with 19 and Brandon Tolliver scored 15.

Riverhead plays at Smithtown East tomorrow and hosts Smithtown West on Tuesday.

East Hampton, 4-4 in League VI and 9-5 overall, kept its playoff hopes alive with a hard fought 4840 victory at Miller Place. Rolando Garces notched 15, Thomas King, 14, and Brandon Hughes, 12. Bonac plays at Glenn tomorrow and gets Amityville on Tuesday.

In other local action Southold (2-7 in League VIII) topped Ross School (17) 72-56. Liam Walker had 23 points for the winners. Roosevelt Odidi was a one-man wrecking crew for Ross, going off for 30 points.

Mattituck, 3-7 in League VII, lost to Center Moriches 77-56 Thursday.

I challenged several of my students to find a way to make six hearts on this hand. Only one, Ida Jennings, was able to come up with the winning line of play. Even very experienced players will have trouble with this contract.

Since East opened the bidding with three diamonds, it was clear that West had a singleton diamond and would not be able to lead another diamond even if she won a trick. Ida realized that East was the dangerous opponent and thus had to keep East from winning a trick.

After winning the first trick with the ace of diamonds, Ida cleverly led the queen of clubs and overtook it with the king.

Now Ida was in dummy to lead a high spade. When East did not play the ace, Ida discarded a losing small diamond from her hand. West played the ace, winning the trick.

But now West had no safe lead. If she led a spade, Ida would win in dummy to discard her last diamond from her hand. If she led a club, Ida would

S 6H play the 9 or 10 from dummy. No matter what East played, Ida could get to dummy to play a high spade.

This hand is an excellent example of why bridge is such a marvelous game and pastime.
