Fire Destroys Home Of Abortion Clinic Pioneer By Rick Murphy
The home of Merle Hoffman, a founder of the nation’s first abortion clinic and perhaps the most influential voice in the abortion rights movement, burnt to the ground on New Year’s Day. Hoffman, the founder and president of the Choices Women’s Medical Center, lives on toney Hedges Bank Drive, a couple doors down from legendary designer Donna Karan and down the block from Sean (Diddy) Combs. Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell acknowledged Hoffman is “high profile” and said there has been “discussion with federal officials,” namely agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He said he was not aware if the Suffolk County Arson Squad has been called in. Hoffman was said to be inside the house when the fire broke out along with four other people. A neighbor who spoke to her later that night told The Independent Hoffman was “surprisingly calm but may have been in shock.”

Six departments battled in vain to save an East Hampton house owned by Merle Hoffman, an abortion-rights pioneer.
Neighbors were abuzz during the afternoon as the fire, fed by wind, quickly spread from the garage to the main house. East Hampton firefighters were first on the scene and were soon joined by five other
neighboring departments in a futile effort to control the blaze. Neighbors said there was a 40-minute lag between the first signs of smoke and the arrival of the first fire truck; a neighborhood Civic
Association has been lobbying the village and town to place a garage housing fire trucks closer to the Northwest Woods neighborhood. Firefighters said they were notiContinued on Page 27.

ON THE BEAT Son Kills Wainscott Man New York City police report that Thomas Gilbert, a financier who owns a home in Wainscott, was murdered Sunday afternoon by his son. Police said Gilbert, 70, was shot in his Manhattan apartment on Beekman Place. He is the founder of Wainscott Capital Partners Fund and a co-founder of Syzygy Therapeutics Inc. Police, who originally said they wanted to talk to the son, Tommy Gilbert, because he might have information about the death, arrested the younger Gilbert at about 10:45 Sunday night. ABC News is reporting the elder Gilbert was killed in a manner that made it appear he committed suicide.

Journal A Day For A Year
Wading River Robbery Riverhead Police reported that shortly before 1 AM Monday a man entered the convenience store at the Valero gas station on Route 25A, flashed a weapon, and demanded cash. He fled with money and cigarettes and was able to elude police that answered the call.
Those registered for the program will be able to take part in a major exhibit, connect with the community, participate in a sharea-thon, and have a journal entered into the museum’s archives to be treasured by future generations. Inspired by an 1831 diary from historic Southampton resident James Harvey Foster, the exhibit highlighting the project will be displayed at the Rogers Mansion in the spring and summer of 2016. Entries for the year-long journal project can be anything the writer wants. A picture of lunch with a caption, a paragraph with full details of where one went, a poem that captures excitement for the new year, anything, just as long as it’s two sentences. E.T.

I HAB A COLD Happy New Year. That’s the good news. The bad news is I’ve had a cold since Thanksgiving. Or is it the flu? . . . One never rests when one is a hypochondriac during the height of a flu epidemic. It reminds me of this column I wrote another cold or flu ago. Here it is: Is there anyone out there who is
not sick with a cold or the flu? It’s like the plague. Men, women and tiny children are all walking around sneezing, coughing, snorting and hacking. I’ve been sick with a miserable cold for days. I’m typing this with one hand, in bed, on my laptop computer,

like some Internet pervert, except in my case I’m holding a tissue in the other hand. I can’t go anywhere without my pants pockets bulging with a giant wad of Kleenex. A number of worldly women have noticed the bulge and greeted me with the timeless line: “Do you have a cold or are you just happy to see me?” I feel like death warmed over. My wife, the beautiful Judy Licht, is trying to be sympathetic, but it isn’t working. (How come your spouse, no matter how he or she tries to be sympathetic to the fact that you’re dying from a cold, can’t seem to communicate that they know how sick you really are?) When I breathe in and out the wheezing sound that comes out of my asthmatic chest sounds a little like an out-of-tune accordion and so I’m amusing my family by playing “Lady of Spain” with my lungs. I’m taking everything. Nothing is working. What I know about most modern medicines is that they don’t work. Before the miracle medicines were around, a cold would come on and all one could do about it was to take aspirin and plenty of hot chicken soup and an occasional Luden’s Honey Lemon Cough Drop. Then science came on the scene. Sir Alexander Fleming (an interesting last name when I consider my current condition) invented penicillin and the war in our bodies was officially on. Germs and bacteria or viruses, or whatever those tiny things that inhabit our bodies are called, were killed by the billions. But it was survival of the fittest and those little buggers who survived grew stronger and stronger and now they

laugh at our feeble, pitiful attempts to stop them. So what used to take three days to cure with chicken soup now takes five or 10 days or even a month to cure with expensive antibiotics. I’m in better shape than my daughter Jodi – two of her three children are under the age of 9. Do you know what kids that age do for sport? They cough and sneeze in each other’s faces for the fun of it. They’re sick all the time. A child’s nose starts to run when they are born and it doesn’t dry up until they’re 35 years old, married and living in another state. A child under the age of 10 is a walking time bomb. Dial any pediatrician in the United States and they don’t even say hello anymore. They just shout out: “AMOXICILLIN! AMOXICILLIN! GIVE HIM AMOXICILLIN!” For would-be grownups like me, the doctors are selecting from a menu of five or six “miracle medicines” which, when they “work,” take a week longer than chicken soup used to take to cure you. I have the most wonderful, brilliant, talented doctor in the world: Dr. Nathaniel Wisch. He’s cured me of everything but my hypochondria (which I’m convinced will some day kill me), but when I call and report that I’m getting a cold he turns into a fashion coordinator. His first question is, “What color is the stuff you’re bringing up?” “I don’t know. I don’t want to look,” I answer. “You must look,” he insists. So I say, “Okay. Okay . . . It looks like everything inside of my body is green. It looks like my body is having a secret St. Patrick’s Day party and I’m the only one invited.” So when I went in for an examination he started me with something called Biaxin, pronounced “Bi-oxen.” I must admit the name didn’t give me confidence. How good can a drug that is named after a cow that is sexually attracted to both male and female cows be? I was right. The Biaxin didn’t work, so I called Dr. Wisch and he asked me to describe the new “color” I was bringing up. I’m sending him a color chart of Benjamin Moore paints along with the explanation that I’m currently bringing up stuff somewhere between Benjamin Moore’s Pacific Celadon #1674 and Tropical Soho Canary #1693. RICK’S SPACE Sleepy Time “It’s just like sleeping except you don’t wake up.” A very wise man once said that about death and I hope it’s true. If so, it would eliminate all those stories about the smell of burning flesh, and an eternity of torture at the hand of a sadistic devil. The way I look at it, if indeed sleep and death are interrelated, as we age we sleep longer and longer each day. By those standards, I still have 50 years to go, because I’m only good for 12 hours a day.

Some people think that is a lot. “I’m a morning person,” they say. They rise at the crack of dawn, they say. Lucky them. I personally, hate the early morning. It’s clammy, it’s cold, and there is nothing good on TV. “I’m a night person,” some say. They watch the late night talk shows, which is fine. The trouble, though, is they still get up early. I find this annoying – in fact, I take it as a personal insult. If you are going to stay up late, you owe it to the rest of us to stay in bed until at least 11 the next morning. It’s the right thing to do. I like to go to bed early and get up late. If I didn’t work I’d get up even later. I’m Mexican. I’m quite sure of this, because I enjoy a good siesta after lunch. This is legal and accepted in Mexico and some other countries. You eat, and then you take a nap for a couple hours, and your boss pays for it. Unfortunately, our cruel bosses in America do not

adhere to this custom. My fondness for sleep prompted one co-worker to accuse me of being a Narcoleptic. This annoyed me, because I’m 100 percent male. “No silly, that’s not what it means,” she said. Whatever. I don’t like to eat dead people, either. Finally, I went to the doctor and told him I had Narcolepsy. “Oh my god,” he gasped. “Lay down!” I’m like, “Why do you want me to lay down? I don’t need any additional encouragement.” It turns out Narcoleptics sleep a lot: Narcolepsy, according to Yahoo Reference, is “a disorder marked by marked by sudden and uncontrollable death.” This made me question not only my own mortality but also the level of intelligence at Yahoo. First of all, to say death is “uncontrollable” is a redundant redundancy. If we could “control” death, nobody would ever die. Death, it is safe to assume, marches to its own drummer, probably the grim reaper. Second, if a Narcoleptic dies suddenly, then there are none left. They are all dead. By definition, if you are alive, you must not be Narcoleptic. Now let’s get back to Narcolepsy. If I fall asleep after lunch I have it. If a Mexican falls asleep after lunch he is taking a siesta. Therefore, ergo, I must be Mexican, or I am a victim

of reverse discrimination. According to the Urban Dictionary, which is available in Manhattan but not on the East End, a narcophiliac may experience sexual arousal at the sight of their sleeping partner, at the feeling of being sleepy themselves, or may enjoy the idea of having sex with their partner while one or both of them is falling asleep. Narcophilia has nothing to do with death or dead bodies, though the word for the paraphilia known as “necrophilia” looks similar.” I am not making this up (every time I make even a vague reference to something sexual people just assume I do it to draw attention to myself). A friend who recently retired fishes almost every morning. He dreamt about doing it during his 40 years of hard work and is now living the dream. He asked me what hobby I would take up if I were retired. I was confounded. The way I figure it, between all that extra sleep I plan on getting there won’t be much time for a hobby, especially when you factor in eating. “I thought you wanted to take up fishing?” he asked. “I do. I can go around noontime.” “There’s no fish out there at noon.” “It doesn’t matter,” I pointed out. “It will be time for my siesta.”

January brings not only a new year, but also many significant changes, add-ons, and regulations to the Affordable Care Act. And none of them are good news, especially for the Middle Class. Though ratepayers, guileless newspaper reporters, and Democrat die-hards focus on the relatively modest increase in premiums, the fact is most of us will be paying far more for health coverage than ever before. Those that aren’t will be receiving federal subsidies — funded by taxpayers. Even the New York Times, a staunch supporter of Obamacare as the ACA is called, is realizing the bait and switch is underway. Yes, premiums have been for the most part kept in check, “but changes to other kinds of benefits affecting the cost of things like doctors’ visits and prescriptions” could mean huge out of pocket expenses for many of us. “Customers of more than 900 plans will see their out-of-pocket maximum for medical bills increase, usually to $6600 for individuals, the most allowed by law for next year,” according to The Times. That’s over $500 per month added on to the cost of the plan – in some cases a 100 percent increase in real costs. Ratepayers aren’t the only ones who will feel the pain. Medicare recipients already suffer from decreased benefits to help fund Obamacare. To make Obamcare appear successful the government added about 10 million people to the Medicare rolls rather than subsidize private plans for them. According to The Hill, to do so, “The federal government raised its reimbursement rates to entice more doctors to accept Medicaid patients under Obamacare.” This year, “family doctors who treat Medicaid patients will see steep drops in payments from the federal government” that could make it tougher for millions of seniors to find competent doctors.

children who are pining to be a part of the social fabric is not only an illegal proposal, it is irrational, immoral and heartless. MARION BODEN Editor’s Note: We stated no such thing. We know the law and agree with it. What we proposed is the town close illegal dwellings, specifically singlefamily homes that have been converted to dangerous and illegal apartments. Whoever lives in them has to find new, legal residences, regardless of their immigration status.
Vengeance And Punishment Dear Rick, Finally! It has been more than 50 years
Senior citizens used to be able to opt for a private plan, Medicare Advantage, to augment Medicare. President Obama has gutted that program to help fund Obamacare, and this year doctors and physicians who accept Advantage “will see a massive deduction in reimbursements,” the Times reported. “These new cuts will cause the private Medicare option to shrink further in the next few years, and pressure the insurance companies that offer them,” according to The Times. That leaves senior citizens - always the cruel target of Obamacare - particularly vulnerable. This is also the year that healthy people who refuse to buy health insurance will begin paying penalties. Obama has consistently fudged the estimates on exactly how many young healthy, people would enter the system, and for good reason. The HMOs make their money on the young and healthy, allowing them to cover the costs of older plan members as their health declines with age. Without new blood, health insurance premiums will begin to rise through the roof. And since the government insists on offering care to those who can’t afford it, the rest of us will bear the brunt of those costs as well. As barbaric as it is, the government has opted to insure children and the poor at the expense of prolonging the lives of our elderly, particularly cruel since Medicare and Social Security were built on the backs of those who have worked so hard all their lives. This is by no means a political rant. Republicans exploited the unpopularity of Obamacare to seize control of Congress, yet there has not been one sensible alternative to the ACA offered by the GOP. Given its history, the GOP is likely to draft a plan that sweetens the coffers of the giant pharmaceuticals and HMOs. Once again, the Middle Class will bear the burden if that scenario develops. Mitt Romney was lambasted for his infamous “47 percent” remarks, but the sad fact is, as long as nearly half our population fails to contribute its fair share things are going to get worse.
that we have elected to ostracize Cuba. The flawed thinking was that somehow isolating them in their capsulized Communist vacuum would magically allow the fresh air of Democracy to infiltrate. The premise is as impossible mentally as it is physically. Breaking the seal and opening the lock, allowing an interchange of people, vis a vis ideas to be exchanged between the two countries is the best way to illuminate the advantages of one political system compared to another. The more exposure, such as the Internet, cell phones, news periodicals and such, the more educated will be the public with the knowledge to intelligently evaluate. The Rubios of our country who
object to this simple premise I fear are more concerned with vengeance and punishment than with progress and improvement. As always, the fact that President Obama executed the obvious does little to encourage their acceptance. NICHOLAS ZIZELIS
Local Waterways Dear Editor, When one observes the changes in Napeague Bay over the last 10 years, it becomes clear that lack of circulation, caused by the closing of the west inlet, is causing massive sand, stratification and pollution to build up inside the bay. All hope of restoring the winter Continued on Page 14.

JUST ASKING
LONG OVERDUE Dear Independent Editor, Great way to start a new year; low gas prices, soaring stock market, highest in history (Dow Jones record over 18,000), Record private sector job growth and growing manufacturing. There is the old quip: if you want to live like a Republican, vote Democrat. A s i d e f ro m t h e e co n o m i c a n d monetary progress which has been made and continues to be made, our boycott of Cuba has finally come to a long overdue end, the embarrassing Scar of Guantanamo is slowly being erased and more Americans now have affordable health care than ever before with health care costs increasing at an ever slower rate than ever in the past. It will be interesting, or rather frightening, to see if now that both houses of Congress are controlled by the negativists, how many of these and other accomplishments can be destroyed. flounder and eelgrass could be for naught if the sand continues to deepen. The mussel shoal outside is gone now and the result can be seen in the satellite photos of the last decade. This is not just a Napeague issue; all the local waterways are clogging up. Our waterways are endangered and the lack of response for needed dredging by the county has dealt a blow to restoring fish habitat. In 2008 the Town Trustees endeavored to buy a dredge so they could respond to the ever-changing winds and storms that clog our inlets. The sand being swept away by those storms now endangers houses too. My proposal is to get a citizen’s petition to our legislators, to present for a vote of the people, a referendum for a percentage of the community preservation fund to go toward the maintenance of our inlets and bays. People come here for the water and fishing but soon the lack of flushing of these waters will destroy the nursery that benefits us all. W h a t i s m o re i m p o r t a n t t h a n preserving the environment around us? If the county won’t do their job of opening inlets then we need to do the job ourselves. Please contact our legislators. LYNDA A.W. EDWARDS

Lighting Law Update On Tap By Kitty Merrill
Could it result in East Hampton Village resembling “a ghost town at night?” That’s a concern voiced by the East Hampton Chamber of Commerce in an email blast about propose changes to the village’s lighting law disseminated last week. In general, the revisions to the existing code were conceived to “modernize” the mandates currently in place, Village Administrator Rebecca Molinaro explained. The lighting law was enacted in 2004 and technology has changed since then. “The changes address new technological improvements to meet professional recommendations for safety and nighttime utility, as well as provisions to use energy more wisely in order to conform to the Village’s goal of energy sustainability,” the legislative intent portion of the new law states. It’s a provision designed to
address the second portion of the intent, wise energy use, that seems to be a sticking point. The amendment calls for extinguishing “non essential lighting” between dusk and dawn and turning exterior lighting off within a half hour and interior lighting within an hour of the close of business. “Day burners” or outdoor lighting that’s illuminated during daylight hours will be prohibited if the law is enacted as drafted. Commercial lighting that can’t be turned off when not in use for essential purposes needs to be fitted with timers or replaced. A hearing last month was adjourned and will be continued on January 16. During the hearing it was noted members of the business community were unable to offer comment at that date, so a second date was planned. “We’re willing to work with them,” Molinaro said. “We welcome dialogue and discussion.”

Tyler Buckley
January 30, 1992 – January 4, 2015 The family of Tyler Buckley of East Hampton mourned the passing of the young man who died on Sunday following an illness. His sister, Brittany, offered the following thought, “As we say goodbye to one of the local legends of our town, we would like for friends and family to remember and cherish the precious moments spent with Tyler Buckley. Please t ak e a mo me n t o f silence to acknowledge the imprints he’s left on our hearts. It comes with a great deal of pain to part ways with one of the most magnificent, caring angels we know. The Buckley family would appreciate any kind of monetary support and/or donation to help us through this difficult time.” Donations can be made by visiting https://fundly.com/tyler-buckleyfamily-support-fund or Fundly.com and searching “Tyler Buckley Family Support” or checks payable to Susan Buckley at 68 Crystal Drive, East Hampton.

Expanding Wellness Week You didn’t miss it. Hamptons Wellness Week has expanded to Wellness Month. That’s four weeks of wellness with more fitness, fun, pampering, healing, learning, connecting and possibilities. Hamptons Wellness Week was built on the premise that balance is the key to life; there’s no one-size-fits-all model. Wellness Week gives participants access to a year’s worth of mind, body and soul experiences for the cost of one boutique fitness class. For $45 a HWW bracelet allows participants to individualize their wellness goals and practice. According to HWW founders Kiley DeMarco and Anastasia Gavalas, students from Southampton Intermediate School are using January’s event as a fundraising opportunity. “It just makes sense for the kids to be promoting and benefitting from this community wellness event. We wanted to attract more moms and the school aimed to focus on health. Instead of selling chocolates or gift wrap, the gift of wellness it is! With the HWW wristband, take one free class at local studios including Hamptons Hot Yoga in Bridgehampton, Pure Barre Southampton, MARVILfit in Hampton Bays, Elements Fitness in East Hampton, Kama Diva Yoga in East Hampton, and more. The wristband also gives participants access to 50 percent off spa, salon, and wellness services. Visit hamptonswellenessweek.com to learn more.

H e Meditation: Mindful In ‘15 alth & Wellness January 7, 2015

The list of benefits is a long one. According to the Art of Living website, meditation can help physically by lowering blood pressure, improving the immune system, decreasing tension-related pain, increasing the production of serotonin, the “feel good” neurotransmitter, and enhancing energy levels. The mental benefits of meditation are even more bountiful. Anxiety decreases as clarity, peace of mind, creativity, and focus, to name just a few, increase. Put simply, meditation targets stress by simultaneously preventing it from entering the system and releasing the stress that’s already accumulated. Steve Interrante teaches meditation. A “soul coach” and certified advanced integrated energy therapist, he noted that many people dismiss meditation because it’s unconventional. “They think of it as voodoo.” But you don’t have to be a yogi up on a mountain to practice meditation, the coach explained. The way a practitioner sits, whether or not he chants, what types of

mantra may be chanted – none of those things are necessary. “There are no rules,” Interrante explained. “Meditation is really about being wherever you are and being able to shut off your mind.” “Setting the intention of giving yourself permission to relax and slow down” is a good starting point, according to Interrante. Find a quiet place with minimal distraction. Sit with your back against something, your body open (Crossing your arms or legs can block energy flow.), and your palms resting up on your lap. “Then it all comes down to breathing. Increased levels of oxygen help relax the physical body. A repetitive cycle of breathing deeply relaxes you and slows the metabolism down,” the coach continued. Once you’re feeling relaxed, begin to focus on your natural breath and the beating of your heart. Deep focus on nothing but those two things is key. “This enables people to separate themselves from their thinking minds. If you get distracted by noise or your body or thoughts, just go back to the breathing,” Interrante advised.

Create your own sacred space, like this one at The Center for Soulful Living, then relax and breathe.
The concept of mindfulness is often attached to the practice of meditation. It can have varied meanings, but at its simplest, it’s about “Being present, aware of the present moment and in the now,” Interrante said. “It’s the ultimate sense of just being.” One form of mindfulness can be practiced during many typically mindless

With the start of each new year, folks young and old find themselves making resolutions. The usual suspects are to lose weight, eat better, quit smoking, exercise and have a healthier lifestyle. And at Southampton Hospital’s E d & P h y l l i s D a v i s We l l n e s s Institute, they’re there to help. The institute offers the only hospital-based integrative medicine on the East End. Dedicated to preventing illness and empowering individuals to live healthier lives, the institute offers a combination of modern science, psychology, nutrition, and exercise physiology to enhance the natural healing capacities of both body and mind. Fo r t h i s m o n t h a l o n e , t h e institute is hosting a slew of programs, promoting a healthier lifestyle: • Starting today, there’s Strength for Life, an eight-week long exercise series for cancer survivors. • Tomorrow marks the beginning of a six week series that will include exercises to improve stability
and balance with functional and recreational activities as well as education about fall risk factors and what can be done to reduce that risk. It starts at 1 PM. • On Monday there’ll be a meeting of the Better Breathers Club at 2:30 PM. • Tuesday, Healthy at Any Age, a discussion and presentation about maintaining a healthy lifestyle, at, you guessed it, any age will be at the Hampton Library in Bridgehampton at 7 PM. For a complete list of this month’s discussions, presentations and programs visit www.hamptonswellnessinstitute. com. “Our full range of complementary therapies supports traditional medicine and teaches patients to harness their own healing power to improve their quality of life,” according to the institute’s brochure. “Preventative integrative medicine is also highly effective way to maintain health and strengthen the mind/body connection in both situations, the resulting self-care is a key element to well being.”

Programs at the institute are designed to supplement medical treatment by helping the participant cope with the stress of illness and make informed choices about treatment. “You’ll develop skills to help you incorporate mind/body principles and practices into your life,” according to a brochure about the institute. “Better nutritional management will put you on track for healthy eating and our therapists will help you identify the physical activity most beneficial to your circumstances.” Each class of six weekly group sessions is 90 minutes long. An initial medical evaluation is necessary and is covered by most insurance providers. After the evaluation, course leaders tailor a program specific to the client’s needs. Throughout the program, staff at the institute will provide support and professional assistance giving encouragement to modify lifestyles to prolong good health and delay the impact of disease for as long as possible. Bridgehampton and Southampton basketball fans had every reason to wake up happy on New Year’s Day – both boys’ teams are undefeated and looking very much like title contenders. The Mariners made it seven in a row on December 30, besting East Hampton in a non-league tilt 7667. The Mariners used a blistering 28-6 third quarter run to put away the visitors. Yes, Herm Lamison’s charges are for real -- deep and talented. Southampton can light it up, with everyone on the floor capable of going off for big numbers. It all begins with Israel Johnson, a six-foot silky smooth point guard who dished out 14 assists to go with his 10 points on this night. Zach Cummings, who is one of Suffolk’s highest scorers so far this season, chipped in with 20 points and added five rebounds and five assets. The big gun was six-foot, four-inch Nasies Fulford, with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Isaiah Jonson scored 11 and grabbed 14 boards. Speaking of scoring leaders, East Hampton’s Brenden KennedyGay exploded for 30 against Southampton and is the eighth highest scorer in Suffolk as of this writing with 21.3 points per game. Isaiah Johnson is 16th (18.9) and Cummings 17th (18.7). The Bonackers are 0-2 in League VI and 3-5 overall. The Mariners are tied with Babylon in League VII action with a 3-0 mark. Bridgehampton, playing for more of the season without Elijah Jackson, a key player, is a serious title contender. On December 28 The Bees knocked off Class AA East Islip to win the Anthony Parlato Memorial Classic -- played at East Islip, no less. Much has been made of the déjàvu aspect of this team – three key players are related to former Bees’ stalwarts who played key roles for coach Carl Johnson during the Bee’s glory years, when the team won three straight New York State Class D titles. Tylik Furman’s father, Charles, was a mercurial point guard for Johnson. Josh Lamison’s uncle, J.P. Harding, was a bruising center for Johnson during the same era. The best player then – and State

Tournament Most Valuable Player three years’ running, was Charles “Mo” Manning. Talk about déjà-vu all over again: the MVP in the Parlato classic was Charles Manning Jr. who tallied 22 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and recorded three blocks. The Bees opened up an 18 point lead and coasted to a 56-44 victory. Jackson, a bit rusty, tallied nine. Furman, the point guard that runs the show, had 12 points and six assists. The Bees are 5-0 in League VIII and have already beaten the three Class D schools in the county convincingly. League action starts in earnest this week and the local teams vie for a berth in the Suffolk County playoffs and a ticket to the State Tournaments. Riverhead, 1-5 overall, is in the middle of the League III standings with a 1-1 record. The bad news for Westhampton is the team is 0-6 on the young season; the good news is the Hurricanes haven’t played a League V game yet. Mattituck is 2-1 in League VII and 6-1 overall. Hampton Bays (1-2 and
3-4) has some work to do. Mercy is last in the league with a 0-3 record (1-6 overall). Mattituck disposed of Greenport 68-54 on December 30. The visitors were led by Will Gildersleeve and Joe Tardif with 17 points each. Chris Dwyer tallied 12 and Daniel Fedun added 10. Tyshe Williams tallied 16 for Greenport and Angel Colon added 10. The two teams in League VIII that appear capable of upending
Bridgehampton are Southold, 3-0 in the league and 5-2 overall, and Stony Brook, 2-0 in the league and 3-1 overall. Southhold edged Eastport/South Manor in a non-league affair on December 30 on the loser’s court. Liam Walker did much of the damage, tallying 19 points. Pat McFarland only scored four points, but he made the deciding bucket late in the game and also grabbed eight rebounds.

If you need that many signs warning you about the low bridge on North Main Street and at the Accabonac trestle in East Hampton, you’re probably too dumb to be driving. The MTA LIRR installed close to two dozen warnings and village officials are none too pleased. They’d like to explore alternatives to excessive signage, Village Administrator Rebecca Molinaro said this week. “We don’t like the way they look.”

East Hampton firefighters put out a mutual aid call. Springs, Amagansett, Montauk, Bridgehampton, Southampton and North Sea fire departments responded with tankers and RIT teams. According to a press release from East Hampton Town, “Fortunately, residents who were home at the time managed to escape the flames safely.” Firefighters worked for close to four hours to extinguish pockets of fire in hard-to-reach areas of the

building, and eventually an excavator was called in to remove debris so that firefighters could have access to areas in the basement that were still burning. The East Hampton Town Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire’s cause and origin. East Hampton Town Fire Marshal Dave Brown, who was at the scene, did not return calls by press time. Hoffman founded her first clinic 44 years ago, and made national headlines in 1989 when she organized a demonstration on the steps of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. At the time Operation Rescue, an anti-abortion movement, was gaining steam nationwide and had the support of Cardinal John O’Connor. At the demonstration Hoffman and her supporters read aloud what has since become a manifesto for the Women’s Rights movement and
