Ketcham and Judge Lisa Rana did the honors, with Tekulsky choosing friend Alex Walter to swear him in and Brennan swearing in her clerk predecessor Overton. Offering his inaugural address, Cantwell spoke of beginning a new year with “great hope and expectations.” As he often underscored during last fall’s campaign, the supervisor voiced the need to work together, and respect one another despite differences. Stating, “My thoughts today

are about the many extraordinary people who live and have lived among us and who have made remarkable contributions to our town and our country,” Cantwell dedicated his first official meeting to the memory of Tuskegee Airman Lee Hayes, who died last year. Thanking town employees for their dedication, the supervisor said he and his administration look forward to working with them cooperatively. Continued on Page 17.

Southampton Celebrates Newly Elected Officials By Emily Toy

All the seats, and most of the aisle space, in the People’s Room at Southampton Town Hall were filled. Audience members spilled out of the room, the huge crowd on hand to celebrate the inauguration of town officials on Monday afternoon. Complete with a procession accompanied by bagpipe players as well as several members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation, Master of Ceremonies and Deputy Supervisor Frank Zappone welcomed some new and familiar faces to the dais. Several incumbent town officials got to see the beginning of another of many terms throughout their respective public service careers. Congressman Tim Bishop was on hand to swear in Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst, marking the beginning of her third term as supe. “My door is always open and

I look forward to a dynamic and working relationship with all of you,” Throne-Holst said in her remarks. “We’re now uniquely positioned to do some real work in Southampton.” The supervisor noted what the vision of the new town board is, naming a more efficient infrastructure, affordable housing, and developing a comprehensive program for environmental and quality of life issues as important variables. Throne-Holst also mentioned how public service is one of her biggest duties, playing second only to her duties as a mother. Councilwoman Christine Scalera swore in Sundy Schermeyer as town clerk, a position she has held since 2006. “Thank you to the residents and the taxpayers for putting your Independent/ Emily Toy

He thanked voters for “giving me another four years and for giving me another shot.” “We’ll do the best we can,” Gregor said. “And to my fellow elected officials, we’re all stuck with each other, so we may as well try to make it work for everybody.” Justice Deborah Kooperstein, the first female judge in Southampton’s history, and Justice Barbara Wilson both renewed their terms on the bench. Among the newly elected officials were town trustee Scott Horowitz, as well as town board members Stan Glinka and Brad Bender.

Upon being sworn in, Horowitz addressed the 75-strong audience. “I look forward to working hard for you all,” he said. He will be joining incumbent trustees Eric Shultz, Bill Pell, and Ed Warner, all three of which clinched re-election. Councilman Glinka, sworn in by Justice Kooperstein, said he looked forward to serving and was proud to do so. “Thank you to everyone who believed in me,” he said. Upon taking the oath of office, Bender enthused, “I think we’re really going to be able to make some changes here. Rally For Deer Life By Kitty Merrill

Opposition to a deer-culling plan slated to target 3000 animals across the East End continues to grow. The East End Group for Wildlife is organizing a “No Cull” rally and demonstration in East Hampton Village later this month, a petition drive has gleaned over 10,000 signatures, and a local wildlife photographer has demanded his photos be removed from a kiosk at the East Hampton Village Nature Trail. Last spring Dell Cullum, who has taken pictures of animals at the Nature Trail every morning for the past three years, donated a half dozen photos to the village to be used in an educational kiosk erected at the popular community site. After learning village officials voted to participate in the regional cull program developed by the Long Island Farm Bureau and the United States Department of Agriculture, Cullum wrote village officials demanding that his pictures be removed. The same morning as the vote, they were served with a lawsuit filed by local animal advocates looking to stop sharpshooters who will set up bait sites and kill does and fawns. Since then, Cullum’s embarked on an ardent campaign on Facebook urging followers (at last count his website received close to 90,000 views in just one month) to join him in opposition to the cull. “Before they voted, I heard about it [the cull program] and thought it was just talk,” Cullum said. “I didn’t believe it was possible.” The photographer immediately wanted to have his photos removed from the kiosk at the Nature Trail. Preparing to write a book about the location, he’s now reconsidering, worried village officials will transform the site – “their most precious jewel” – into “a killing field.” Since the December 20 vote, Cullum has posted near-daily photos, PSAs and videos in an effort to raise awareness of and opposition to the cull. In one video, he debunks the argument that the animals are responsible for an uptick in collisions. On December 27 between 6 and 7 AM, Cullum filmed 30 cars whose drivers ignored the posted speed limit on Egypt Lane, as evidenced by cautionary “slow down” messages on a radar speed indicator at the site. In a half hour at lunchtime the same day, another 20 cars received the same warning from the device. It’s the drivers, not the deer who

are out of control, Cullum reasoned. East Hampton Village Mayor Paul Rickenbach has been the target of the lion’s share of Cullum’s ire. Another video, entitled “Deer God,” takes him to task for authorizing the slaughter of deer, while still another Facebook entry sets photos of deer side by side with pictures of garbage on the beach and includes the statement “Mass Killing deer, easy; charging one violator for littering . . . impossible.” (A member of the East Hampton Town Litter Committee, Cullum has also crusaded to clean up area beaches.) Speaking of the petitions, rally, and push on social media, the mayor called the efforts “a sterling

I got a great gift one Christmas. A friend gave me a bunch of DVDs of old Charlie Chan movies. I thought about political correctness while I watched four Chan movies in a row, starting with The Shanghai Cobra (1945). I love Charlie Chan. Poor Charlie was one of the first victims of the Politically Correct Mafia. In case you’re too young to remember, he was the jolly little round Chinese detective in those great mystery movies of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. His movies can rarely be seen on television. They’re banned on most network stations. The movies are all pretty much alike. There’s a murder and Charlie Chan is called in to solve it. The killer is usually a guy with a mustache. Charlie spent most of the time in the movie giving us his corny “Confucius say . . .” fortune-cookie sayings that are not unlike the great philosophical insights we now see written on our bumper stickers and T-shirts. What I find fascinating is that you never saw a bullet hole or blood or violence in those movies. There’s always a scene where someone would say, “I know who the killer is. It’s . . .” Then you would see a close-up of a gun. Then the lights would go out, and then a shot would ring out. And the person who was about to give the evidence was crumpled in a heap on the floor. Charlie would kneel over the body and say out loud, “He’s dead. Killer is both clever and cunning. No one leave room, please.” Charlie always got his man. But 7/27/12 4:33 PM then one day, Charlie Chan was murdered in cold blood. Killed by a

whole new generation that decided Charlie Chan movies were not politically correct. The Asians hated that he was a stereotypical Chinese man. He spoke with a Chinese accent. It didn’t help that Charlie Chan was played by Caucasians (Sidney Toler and Roland Winters) who were pretending to be Chinese. The PC hated that his Number One Son was a dope. Black groups hated the fact that he had a driver and the driver was black and was something of a boob. Holier-than-thou political groups marched against Charlie Chan. Grown men got up and made speeches against Charlie and all that he stood for. In time, not one single television station in the country would carry a Charlie Chan movie. Now, one movie series they continue to show over the years is Sherlock Holmes, and as best as I can figure, the Wasps didn’t picket television stations because Dr. Watson was a bit of a dope. In fact, there is no record of Wasps picketing anyone because another Wasp is portrayed as a dope. This leads me to believe that either Wasps aren’t very organized, or that they feel that they have more dopes than any other group, or they’ve been around so long they don’t give a damn what anyone thinks of them. Or, all three. These days Sherlock Holmes is having a revival on Masterpiece Mystery Theatre on PBS where you can see

Since PBS only accepts Politically Correct viewers, the character of Dr. Watson is now a Rhodes Scholar instead of the amusing old Wasp fool we grew up with in the movies. Anyway, the Wasps are the only group in the world who haven’t protested anything since their last great success, the Boston Tea Party. I had a long conversation about this column with my wife, the beautiful Judy Licht. She didn’t think it was very politically correct for me to be doing a column about being politically correct. We talked about this while we watched a tape of Charlie Chan and the Sky Dragon. At one point I said, “Speaking as an Italian . . .” She quickly said, “You’re not an Italian.” “I’m not an Italian? Of course I’m an Italian. My mother and father were Italians.” “They may have been Italians because they were born in Italy, but you’re an Italian-American.” “When did I become an ItalianAmerican? Who decided? Why didn’t I get a chance to vote on this?” I screamed. My screams were interrupted by gunfire. On the television screen, Charlie Chan had just caught the killer. It was a fake insurance investigator. I was relieved to see he had a mustache. It’s nice to know that some things never change. Or at least they won’t change until The Committee To Protest the Unfair Treatment of Men With Mustaches is formed. And The Nominees Are . . . By Miles X. Logan

Indy’s intrepid movie critic is an Oscar whiz, correctly predicting 29 of the 35 major nominations last year and all but one of the winners. Here are his picks for 2013 – the nominations will be announced January 16. “You have to be in it to win it . . .” Keeping that old axiom in mind, the Academy now allows 10 movies to be nominated for Best Picture. It doesn’t hurt, of course, that a nomination adds substantially to the box office. First, the no brainers – 12 Years A Slave, Gravity, American Hustle, Saving Mr. Banks, Inside Llewyn Davis and Wolf Of Wall Street should all snare nominations. After that, a pool of about 15 movies vie for the final four nominations. We think Her, the quirky movie about a man (Joaquin Phoenix) who falls in love with his computer (really) will make the grade – the Academy respects the director, Spike Jonze. Philomena, an Oscar vehicle for the incomparable Judi Dench, may get rewarded in this category as well. Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine is on the bubble, as is Nebraska and Captain Phillips. Fruitvale Station, which was released early in the year, is a deserving longshot. They are wheeling out the old warhorses for Best Actor, even though Robert Redford doesn’t utter a word in All Is Lost, and Bruce Dern is depressing in Nebraska. The favorite, though, is Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave). Pencil in Matthew McConaughey for his extraordinary performance in Dallas Buyer’s Club. Leo DiCaprio should get his annual nomination for Wolf. Michael B. Jordan is a possible upsetter – he was brilliant in Fruitvale. Other possibilities are Phoenix, Oscar Isaac (Llewyn) and – talk about old warhorses, Tom Hanks (Phillips). As for the ladies, Woody Allen knew what he wanted when he courted Cate Blanchett to star in Jasmine. He was rewarded with the year’s best performance. Dench is her only real competition, though Sandra Bullock (Gravity) is an Academy favorite. Emma Thompson stole the show in Mr. Banks. Meryl Streep, as always, looms, though August: Osage County was a stiff. The Best Supporting Actor category is led by Jared Leto (Dallas), and Michael Fassbender (Slave).

Jonah Hill deserves a nod for his work in Wolf. Hanks is up for consideration in this category for Banks. The late James Gandolfini (Enough Said) might get enough sympathy votes to squeak in, but Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) is more deserving. Jennifer Lawrence will have to settle for a Best Supporting Actress statue this year – she was brilliant in Hustle. The Oprah Winfrey PR machine has been pumping since

before The Butler bombed, and she could conceivably call in enough markers to finagle an undeserving nod. Lupita Nyongo (Slave) is a shoo-in. The always wonderful Octavia Spencer (Station) should get the fifth nod. The Best Director Statue usually goes to the winner of the Best Movie though it didn’t last year because Ben Affleck was tragically overlooked for Argo. The major players this year appear to be

Alfonso Cauron (Gravity), Steve McQueen (Slave), and the Coen brothers for Llewyn. But Cauron relied on spectacular special effects, and the Coen brothers are sometimes an acquired taste. Jonze and Allen are probably more deser ving winners, and Alexander Payne (Nebraska) has his supporters, despite the bleak black and while footage. Scorsese is also a possibility. John Lee Hancock (Banks) is a live longshot.

Almost every vote was unanimous. In a marked departure from the behavior that colored their predecessors’ service, new members of the East Hampton Town Board expressed almost universal agreement during their first official meeting last Thursday. There was just one dissenting vote amidst dozens of ayes offered. Councilman Fred Overton, the sole Republican on the board, voted against the appointment of Cate Rogers to the Zoning Board of Appeals. Offering his opposition, Overton said he’d hoped the new administration would have given Republican appointee Lee White

a chance to serve another term. Noting Rogers was “very helpful” during the campaign, he added, “at this time I can’t support [the appointment].” Overton also offered comments related to the appointment of campaign opponent Job Potter who was placed on the town planning board. He wished the Democratic majority had given ousted member J.P. Foster another chance, but voting to support Potter’s appointment, Overton recalled working with him when he was a town councilman and that he was “a gentleman” when they ran against one another for town board last fall. In other news of appointments, the town attorney’s office will undergo a significant change of staff. The board voted unanimously to give the reins to Elizabeth Vail. A graduate of St. John’s University Law School, Vail has eight years’ experience as an assistant town attorney for Southampton Town and worked three years for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. With five years as assistant town attorney in East Hampton already under her belt, Elizabeth Baldwin returns to town hall as an ATA. New Year’s Eve Nightmare Miguel A. Mugica-Concepcion of Montauk is in serious trouble after an eruption on New Year’s Eve. East Hampton Town Police said they were called to an apartment at 411 Westlake Drive shortly after 9 PM. Concepcion, 29, allegedly threatened another individual while brandishing a pistol,

in Hampton Bays when cops say Joseph Perez of Aguebogue, driving a 2001 Ford truck, plowed into a parked car, hit Sartori who was standing in the road near her vehicle and then hit another parked car. Police arrived at the scene to find Sartori bleeding badly. Perez was slightly injured and taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment. He has been charged with DWI but more serious charges involving vehicular homicide are expected to be lodged shortly.

Operator Praised Suffolk County 911 Operator Christine Hogan recently helped deliver a baby over the phone from the offices of Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services. Hogan, an eight-year veteran from Mattituck, received an urgent call from a woman who said her daughter was in labor. Assessing the situation, Hogan realized that an emergency crew would not make it to the home in time, so she talked the mother through the delivery step by step. “It happened so fast,” said Hogan. “I’d say from the time the baby started presenting to full delivery was about a minute and a half. The best part was when I heard the healthy baby girl crying.”

Happy Snow Year! Winter storm Hercules was no 90 pound weakling to start the New Year last Thursday and Friday, dumping about eight inches of snow across the East End. High winds and extremely low temperatures contributed to declarations of a “state of emergency” by state and local officials, plus the activation of emergency operations centers. By Saturday morning, most roads were cleared and this week, folks are bracing for the lowest temperatures the region has seen since the 1980s. BRRRRRR.

RICK’S SPACE Fa La La La La I didn’t watch the ball drop. It’s the first time I’ve missed it since the beginning of ball dropping. I blame it on television, which, I am becoming convinced, is a useless, outdated medium. No, not Ryan Seacrest. He is an annoying little imp to be sure, but I don’t mind him. Plus I saw him in King Kullen once and he acted almost . . . normal. Of course, I could have gone to Times Square to watch the damn thing live, but I rank that as among

the stupidest things anyone can do. In all of my time on earth I only made that mistake once. Invariably, the people in the crowd are not New Yorkers, but strangers who came from all over the world. Many are serviceman who come to enjoy the New Year’s Eve festivities. The revelers proceed to the epicenter, surrounded by tens of thousands of other forlorn souls, hoping to catch a glimpse of Jenny McCarthy. It can’t be for the music – one

of the saddest things was watching the performers lip-sync. In the old days, of course, performers actually performed live. Even when lipsyncing became the vogue, they at least took pride in trying to fool the audience by mouthing the words as perfectly as possible. Nowadays, they don’t even care. They’ll be the middle of a song when they raise the microphone in the air, yet their voices continue to be heard singing even while they are yelling pithy catch phrases like “put your booty in the air” or “grab your crotch!” The highlight of the night, which I didn’t stay up for, was Miley Cyrus, who apparently lip-locked with Seacrest. Of course, the TV camera missed the moment, cutting away to yet another commercial instead. Over on Channel 4 Justin Timberlake jumped around, again wearing that ridiculous pork-pie hat,

whipping the crowd into a frenzy even though he was lip syncing songs devoid of any meaningful content. He was introduced as the Number One musical act in the world. What was wrong with that picture? Timberlake became famous in a band called ‘N Sync. Another musical guest that evening (who actually played and sang his songs) was a gentleman named Paul McCartney – yeah, the guy from the Beatles. Apparently, the highlight of Seacrest’s show was a live clip of Billy Joel performing in Brooklyn – he too was actually singing, which is only fair, since he is a professional singer by trade. Funny the two oldtimers stole the show on a night geared to brain-dead teenyboppers. I went to Times Square years ago, when you could actually drink yourself sick while standing in the cold for 12 hours. In those days everyone had a bottle, there were hundreds of pickpockets, and numerous gang members with knives. In other words, party central. It took us all day to finagle our way to the front, hoping to see a glimpse of Dick Clark and hear whoever it was that was performing. Just as it was getting close to midnight, however, the hours spend sloshing beer and other volatile liquids down our gullets began to take their toll. Since it was too crowded to pee right there – you might hit someone carrying a knife or gun – we had no choice but to turn back to find a toilet or at least something that resembled one. We were still looking when the god damned ball dropped, though we couldn’t even see it. I puked on the subway back to Brooklyn to cap off a remarkable night. Hey we were young – as we age we grow wiser and don’t do as many foolish things. Heck, I was only 37. Getting back to 2013, I’m sorry I missed the part when Jenny picks a serviceman out of the crowd and kisses him. For that one special guy, who was probably stationed in Singapore or some other godforsaken place like Speonk, that lingering kiss was a highlight he will not soon forget. Forget for a moment that McCarthy probably long ago lost her original teeth, and god knows where that mouth of hers has been. That was the one guy who could justify going to New Year’s Eve in Times Square that night. By the way, they don’t even let you bring booze to the event nowadays -- WTF?????? We shut the damn TV off at 11:30. Soon, as lovers are wont to do, as that magical hour rolls around, Karen and I . . . well, we made . . . we had . . . a great, big gooey hot fudge sundae.

EDITORIAL Look How Wonderful I Am! A recent mailer from Congressman Tim Bishop – paid for by taxpayers – shamelessly touts his many “achievements” during the past year. But look a little closer. He takes credit for procuring funds for a beach restoration project in Port Jefferson. In reality, the Village applied for FEMA funds and the point man on the project was the mayor, Margot Garant. Bishop isn’t even mentioned in a story about it in the Port Jefferson local paper. In fact, Bishop takes credit for al the FEMA funds distributed in Suffolk County after Superstorm Sandy. In fact, local municipalities apply for FEMA funds. Federal funds are available in every Congressional district. Yes, the incumbent has some clout, and most politicians attach their names to every positive thing that happens in their districts, even if in reality they did nothing to help the projects along -- and even if the money was earmarked for their districts anyway. Bishop states he “secured $1.2 million in federal funding” to replace sidewalks in Riverhead. The truth is those funds were part of a federal grant from 2005, and are being administered by the State Department of Transportation – and the town will be responsible for some of the costs of replacing the sidewalks if the project is ever sees the light of day. Bishop crows he “introduced legislation” to eliminate the possibility Plum Island will be sold. But he doesn’t mention the legislation never passed. He even brags “Medicare Part B premiums and deductibles will not increase in 2014,” though Bishop had nothing at all to do with that development. In fact Medicare Advantage payouts are being cut. Perhaps his modesty prevented Bishop from listing some of his other accomplishments. Rather than waste more taxpayer money with self-serving mailings we at The Independent decided to do it for him: • Became the first local Congressman in memory to be investigated by the FBI. • Is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for accepting campaign donations tied to an official action. • Is under investigation by the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. • Refused to fully cooperate the Office of Congressional Ethics investigation, which concluded there was “substantial reason to believe that a violation of House rules, standards of conduct and federal law“ were committed by Bishop. • Was named one of the “Top Ten Corrupt Congressman” by a non-partisan Washington DC based watchdog group. Yes, it’s been an eventful year for our Congressman. Shouldn’t he be apprising his constituents of all these wonderful things when he mails us a newsletter? Bishop, as inconceivable as it may seem, apparently is running for Congress yet again this year. His amazing capacity to distort the truth will likely come in handy. Oh, we forgot his greatest achievement: Bishop helped ram Obamacare down our throats. Thanks, Tim.

Dear Editor, The following was sent to the Mayor of East Hampton. New Year Greetings to you and yours. I just read with intense sadness your plan to have “sharpshooters” significantly kill off the deer population. Standing back from this, you would have to admit this plan does not make any sense. Why do we have to kill these gifts of God? Have you considered, instead of killing them, have the deer tranquilized and proceed with a program of neutering them? Such is the case of other feral animals such as cats and dogs, why not deer? Also to be considered, after tranquilization, transport them to areas in the wild, away from the population? Have you considered what a risk you are taking promoting gunfire within the town? If money is scarce, a fund drive can be established to provide for the costs. Considering the vast amount of wealth in East Hampton, this should not present a problem. I ask that you do not give in to pressure from a small minority of the population who want the slaughter to proceed. Think like a caring, nature loving individual, which is and always was the core of the people in East Hampton. All of us deserve to live. JOSEPH RYAN

Christian Deger I’ve made the same ones since 2010. Get good grades. Every year there’s a new reason. First, to do well in high school. Then you’re looking at colleges, so you need them. Then you’re applying for college, so you still need them. Then, I’m in college so I need them. Samantha James I go to the gym every day. I work at Soul Cycles, so I spin every day. Most of my resolutions were health related. I’ve also made plans for eating healthier and I’ve been sticking to the plans I’ve made. I guess you could say so far so good.

Home Forever Dear Editor, Last month, while I was reading Newsday, I came upon a photo of an elderly black woman. Her face was contorted in grief and a large tear -- almost too large to be real -- was rolling down her cheek. She was standing in front of a coffin, which was draped in an American flag. Clara Gantt had waited -- for 63 years -- for word of the fate of her husband, who had been captured by North Koreans, held prisoner and died in captivity during the Korean War. His body had recently been exhumed and sent back home, so that he could finally rest in peace. Clara had never lost hope her husband might still be alive and that she would see him again. Indeed, in the beginning, she had decided to buy a house and prepare it for his return. She wanted him there so that he could finally take it easy -- fish all day and every day if he wanted. Her preparations even included hiring a gardener. She had been taken to an airfield in Los Angeles, very early one morning last month, so that she could witness the arrival of his remains. She’s 94 years old now. This simple woman would now be the subject

of a press interview about the event. My guess is that she had never done that sort of thing. But she spoke with the sort of eloquence that only a person like her -- religious and utterly devoted -- could express. No, she was never tempted to remarry. No, she never lost her faith that he would someday return. Yes, she was always a Godly woman. “Here I am,” she said into the microphones, “still his wife. I will remain his wife until the Lord calls me home.” I am crying as I type this. I have lived two-thirds as long as Mrs. Gantt has. I have never, ever been as impressed with a human being as I am with her. Not your Gandhis or your Mandelas. No Pope, no Lincoln has come as close to touching me as deeply as this woman has. I suspect that there may be some sort of jealousy involved on my part. I am not as good as I could be because I have come to recognize in her a state of grace so profound that it is impossible to describe. There is nothing more one can do but to be humbled by her dignity and fervently wish that she lives out her life comforted by knowing he is finally home forever. Nick Saridakis

OBITUARY

Robert J Syers, 77

Robert J. Syers, an advertising entertainment executive and actor, died at Southampton Hospital on December 14. He was born June 1, 1936, grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn and graduated from James Madison High in 1954. He served in the Army National Guard from 1958 to 1961 after his basic training at Fort Dix, where he painted murals. He earned his B.A. in Advertising at Brooklyn College in 1964. Mr. Syers began a lifelong love of theater as a seven-year-old Broadway autograph hound who was known to stars from Laurence Olivier to Marilyn Monroe as “Little Bobby.” He was called “king of the second acts” for the many shows he saw with tickets that had been

abandoned at intermission. Mr. Syers’ career began in the mailroom of BBDO. He quickly rose to account and media management positions and became a top buyer with such clients as DuPont, Gillette, and Philco. His secretary, Deanne Merritt, intercepted calls from female suitors, which inevitably led to Mr. Syers’ proposal of marriage and their union of 53 years. Mr. Syers joined ABC Radio and then ABC Daytime before moving over to ABC’s cable TV division as one of its first employees. As TV expanded globally in the 1980s, he created RJS Marketing and later CATS TV to syndicate programs around the world. Mr. Syers was a member of both the Players Club and the Lotos Club in NY. Mr. Syers began his career as a background actor in 1986 with the film Sweet Liberty continued with the TV series “Law & Order” and “Royal Pains” and films Masquerade, Deep Impact, The Nanny Diaries, Something’s Gotta Give, and Town and Country. A Sag Harbor resident, Mr. Syers worked at top cultural institutions in the Hamptons - Guild Hall in East Hampton, Bridgehampton Chamber Music, the Hampton Classic and Bay Street Theater - and practiced real estate at Prudential Sag Harbor and Brown Harris Stevens, East Hampton. The Syers family wintered in Naples, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Deanne; brother, Harry; daughter, Kelly, and granddaughter, Kaitlyn Syers Raphaelson, of Santa Monica, CA.

Cantwell directed the town’s Natural Resources Department to work with coastal engineers and scientists to assist the town’s collaboration with the Army Corps of Engineers and complete a proposed project for the downtown shoreline and seek funding for Ditch Plains replenishment. The supervisor observed that the recent 555 development proposal in Amagansett – to construct a large luxury senior condo community – revealed a loophole in farmland preservation law. “Allowing this type of development to avoid the farmland protection requirements must be corrected,” he said. When it comes to code enforcement, Cantwell asked involved departments to make compliance a priority. The new administration will also have the planning department prepare a comprehensive review of nonconforming businesses. Bringing his comments to a conclusion, Cantwell made a

Family and friends, well wishers and mentors, cops and counterparts filled East Hampton Town Hall on December 28 to witness the official swearing in of East Hampton Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo. Supervisor Bill Wilkinson opened the proceedings, noting that the swearing in of Sarlo’s predecessor Ed Ecker was his first official act in the new historic town hall in 2010. He said he was proud to end his service with a similar act, recognizing the culmination of Sarlo’s rise to the top of the PD. Sarlo praised the chiefs who went before him -- Ecker, Todd Sarris and Tom Scott -- recalling their legacy to the town and their impact on him as role models. He spoke of character attributes he learned from Coach Jim Nicoletti at East Hampton High School, and asked those present to honor Ryan Lynch with a moment of silence. His classmate at the police academy and dear friend, Lynch, was sworn in to EHTPD with Sarlo. Lynch died in 2005, but had he lived, he would have “found a way to have my back and make me laugh,” as Sarlo carried out the responsibilities of his office, the newly anointed chief said. Describing members of EHTPD as “true professionals” who perform acts of bravery and acts of kindness, Sarlo said being a police officer means “Every day you have a chance to be part of people’s lives.” K.M.

Pierson and Greenport, competing in League VIII, are both off to 3-1 starts in league action. The decision is likely to be driven by potential revenue gains by the league and teams. But, the fans are doing everything in their power to prevent another playoff round. This past weekend, three of the four playoff hosting cities (Indianapolis, Green Bay, and Cincinnati) needed extensions to sell out their stadiums and prevent TV

blackouts in their local market. The players are doing their part as well, by providing exhilarating finishes, including three games decided by a combined six points. It’s time for the NFL to adhere to the old cliché, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” As it has for several seasons, the NFL playoffs actually started a week early. There were two win-or-gohome games between the Packers and Bears in the NFC North, and the Eagles and Cowboys in the NFC East. Depending on the intricacies of how a potential new playoff structure would work, the chances would decrease of having win-orgo-home games in the final week of the season. Math dictates, the more teams that make the playoffs, the less there is at stake late in the season. With an extra team or two advancing from each Conference, instead of playing for a division title and postseason berth, the CowboysEagles game could’ve just been for

playoff seeding. That’s not nearly as exciting as what transpired two weekends ago. Meantime, the fans spoke by not buying playoff tickets. The Colts, Bengals, and Packers were given extensions to sell all their Wild Card weekend tickets. If the games hadn’t sold out, they would have been blacked out on TV in their local market. In all three cases, teams were bailed out by corporate sponsors buying the remaining tickets, and in Cincinnati, they were donated to active and veteran military members. While that’s a very nice gesture, the struggle to sell these tickets highlights a problem for the League. The NFL product has become so good on television, while the price of tickets, parking passes, and stadium food are all rising. And despite what the government and MSNBC tell us, Americans are still digging out of a recession. By adding an extra round to the playoffs, selling out stadiums would become even more difficult. There would be less at stake, and I have a hunch that prices wouldn’t be a drastically less than current prices on Wild Card weekend. Then, when looking at the onfield success of Wild Card weekend, it’s hard to not think: Why would the league want to mess with this system? Three of four playoff

games this past weekend were decided by three points or less. The NFL continues to distance itself as “America’s Sport.” A large part of that is because of the ideal balance of competition in the regular season that continues in the postseason. More teams in the postseason would dilute the playoff and regular season product. The NFL should learn from the NBA, which allows too many teams to make the playoffs. If the NBA season ended today, half of the teams in the Eastern Conference making the postseason would have a record under .500; and because so many teams make the playoffs, there is little reason to watch before the pair of Conference Finals. The early playoff rounds are simply boring moneymakers. The NFL has a decision to make: add more playoff games or keep the system as is. One will likely bring in more TV revenues, but hurts the fan experience, and add more wear and tear to the players’ bodies.
