East Hampton Needs an Independent Voice on the Town Board Re-Elect Councilman Dominick Stanzione Vote for Checks and Balances

Dominick Works Hard With excessive partisan politics across the nation, East Hampton is fortunate to have a hard working, independent voice in local government. Dominick’s expertise was critical to the financial plan that saved East Hampton from bankruptcy. He co-founded the Group for Good Government and fought for an independent Budget and Financial Advisory Committee. He founded the Amagansett Food Pantry and is a volunteer with the Ambulance Squad.

Dominick Preserves the Environment Dominick restored the Community Preservation Fund that has saved thousands of acres of open space. Gross mismanagement undermined the best tool

for preservation. Dominick cleaned up the mess. He then voted to preserve over 200 acres of sensitive land. He fought for a clean water policy— the most progressive environmental initiative of the last decade. Dominick spearheaded a sensible deer management plan.

Dominick Fights for our Neighborhoods Dominick led the fight for a workable solution to prevent McMansions on small lots in Town. He led the fight to stop the sewage plant from polluting our water and our air in Springs. He also led the fight for beach access and beach restoration in Montauk. Dominick has worked hard to reduce helicopter noise. He’s leading the effort at restoring the Amagansett Coast Guard Station and Fort Pond House in Montauk.

The Choice is Clear

also endow a scholarship fund for students from the Newark area. I won’t name him here because I have vowed to never help the IRS target my friends with the IRS secret program titled, “You screw with our Liberal Messiah and we will, in the interest of fairness, audit you.”

HILARIOUS Before you do anything else, get on to a computer and go on this YouTube site: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=CDSMMfcwaj8&feature=youtu.be Don’t even bother with the rest of this column, it’s not that good, but the web site will show you a clip titled “Hitler finds out about Obamacare Exchange Problems . . .” Guaranteed to give you a great laugh whether you’re a bleeding heart Democrat or an outraged Republican.

HOW REPUBLICANS THINK First of all, resist the obvious temptation to get up and scream at the top of your lungs: “Obamacare! Benghazi! Fast and Furious! IRS scandal in the White House! Morsi, Erdogan, Muslim Brotherhood and the rest of the Islamist maniacs! Iranian nukes!

Bungling Assad and the Russians! Record black unemployment! Black on black murder epidemic! Six, going on seven, years of joblessness! Lowest labor participation rate since women joined the work force! Crony capitalism all over the place! Absurd environmental regulations! Keystone pipeline! Nuclear family vanishing! Single parents everywhere! Homeless in our streets! NSA spying on everyone in the universe! Bankrupt pension plans and escalating entitlements! Everything in hock to the Chinese! $17 trillion in debt with no end in sight! He’s the worst president in history! The worst president imaginable! “Did I leave anything out?” A good friend of mine posted the two paragraphs above on Facebook. This doesn’t come from an ignorant rabble-rouser like me, or some Tea Party goon, but from a wonderful, generous giant of the financial world. This man – who came from modest beginnings in Newark, New Jersey – has contributed millions to charity and donated $10 million to his alma mater’s College of Business and Economics to endow a Department of Finance and several faculty positions. He and his wife

HOW DEMOCRATS THINK So I got into an Uber car the other day and the driver was a delightful African-American man in his forties who was on his first day on the job driving for Uber, a great new car service that has the best drivers in the city. We hit it off and started talking. We both came from Brooklyn, and his enthusiasm over his new job was wonderful. “I already made $100 today,” he said. Then he told me that this was a part-time job and he works for the New York City Department of Sanitation and he will retire in two years. “I have to do plenty of overtime so that in two years I can retire and I will get a pension of half my highest yearly salary over the last three years. “If I can get my salary up to $100,000, I can get $50,000 a year pension for the rest of my life. “Then I’m going to move to Delaware.” “Delaware?” I asked. “Why Delaware?” “Because it’s a great place to bring up my twin boys. They’re 11 years old and Bed-Stuy is no place to bring up two boys.” I agreed. Then he added, “I’m sure glad we’re getting a Democrat as Mayor this time.” I thought of Bill de Blasio and

IN THE NEWS

what he is going to do to the police department and how much more dangerous it is going to be for every little kid who lives in Bed-Stuy. I said nothing. Nothing I could say was going to change his mind or his vote. We got to my destination and I gave him a big tip and wished him the best of luck. I truly meant it.

MOVIE TIP Do not, I repeat, do not go to see The Counselor at the beloved United Artists East Hampton movie theater. The movie is a waste of money and one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Nothing makes sense. It ranks right up there with bad movies like The English Patient and that dog of a movie about the two gay cowboys whose title I have forced myself to forget. BUT, and this is a big BUT, the first four minutes of The Counselor has what has to be the sexiest, wildest scene I’ve ever seen in a movie. Michael Fassbender and Penelope Cruz in bed are one step away from porn hot. My suggestion is buy a ticket to one of the other movies they are showing, like Prisoners or Enough Said, then sneak into the theater where The Counselor is showing. Watch the first four minutes of The Counselor and then leave to see any other movie in the place. Men, I guarantee that as you limp up the aisle your date or your spouse will be following you muttering, “Why can’t you do more of that?” If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@ dfjp.com.

For Southampton Town Supervisor Make no mistake, these are two top notch candidates. The incumbent, Anna Throne-Holst, has by and large done an efficient job and has worked extremely hard. Her challenger, Linda Kabot, is a former town supervisor (and a former town board member) who also served admirably. It’s unfortunate we must choose one. The circumstances surrounding Kabot’s DWI arrest four years ago still rankle us, and it likely cost her the election. We believe then, and we believe now, that it was a setup, and her subsequent acquittal proves that. That has nothing at all to do

with Throne-Holst, of course, but it was an unfortunate event that overshadowed the voting. The two differ on the events that occurred involving the police department while Throne-Holst was in office. Throne-Holst pushed to bring Billy Wilson in as chief, and defends that decision. We think it proved disastrous. Last year, after a disgraced cop who was riding around stoned, carrying a gun and making arrests, was reinstated after an extended stint in rehab, Throne-Holst embraced him and commiserated with him.

Seven felons were released from prison because of this guy. Only the powerful union kept him from getting fired. He certainly doesn’t deserve our sympathy, let alone an apology. He needs to apologize to the community. The fact that Throne-Holst doesn’t get that tells us she’s still pandering to the PBA. In any case, you won’t see Linda Kabot apologizing for a cop who rode around stoned with a loaded gun making arrests. Kabot is an ardent supporter of the Southampton Town Trustees, who are charged with protecting our waterways and beaches. It’s

a crucial time for the trustees as they try to fend off powerful interests that want to build revetments and bulkheads and usurp property owned by the freeholders of our town. Throne-Holst can barely hide her disdain for the trustees and speaks about “bringing them into compliance.” She manipulated behind the scenes to keep Fred Havemeyer off the Independence Party line. Make no mistake, the trustees are a curmudgeonly bunch, but they are there to protect the rights of freeholders to use our beaches and waterways without government hindrance. The Board of Trustees stands separate but equal to the town board and Throne-Holst seems bent on upending that fragile relationship. These are relatively minor complaints when measured against Throne-Holst’s record of achievement. Still, she accomplished what she has with a Republican majority on the board, and they rightfully take a share of the credit. Many of the financial reforms she boasted about making in 2010 were actually put in place by Kabot in 2008 and 2009. Kabot, by the way, portrayed in some corners as a supervisor who raised taxes, kept taxes flat during her time in office, as did her predecessor and Throne-Holst after her. In the end, at least from this corner, there is a sense of unfinished business. To put it in boxing parlance, Kabot was stripped of her title – she didn’t lose it in the ring. Her support of the trustees, her two decades of service to the town and the community, and her ability to go toe-to-toe with party bosses, union heads and special interest groups gives her a decisive edge in this election. In the final analysis Kabot has deep local roots, more so than her opponent. And the town’s pay-toplay policy under Throne-Holst has been at times embarrassing, landing on the pages of the New York Post. There is little doubt that certain special interest groups have the ear of the supervisor, for better or for worse. Throne-Holst we trust, will find greener pastures soon enough, perhaps on the county or state level – she would make an excellent successor to State Senator Ken LaValle, for example. But The Independent endorses Linda Kabot for Southampton Town Supervisor.

For East Hampton Town Board Though many residents don’t consider the airport a major issue, most of the ‘soft’ money in this campaign comes from those on one side or the other. Rest assured, though, it is a fait accompli – the town won’t be taking any FAA money any time soon, regardless of who prevails in this race. But don’t be deluded into thinking the town will then control noise and air traffic for the next 20 years as opponents are claiming. What happens in the future depends on future boards, and when a $10 million repaving project comes up, or when the FAA sues the town for overstepping its bounds, voters may well decide they’d rather have a new town board then spend taxpayers’ money on the airport. When choosing a town board candidate we must look beyond the airport and the party labels and focus on the individual candidates. Fred Overton is clearly a top candidate. He’s been involved in our town’s affairs for 40 years; as

town clerk he has seen first hand how to be an effective town board member. He’s efficient, he listens, and he’s intelligent. Overton, a former assessor, knows this town needs a reassessment from experience -- he recently checked deed transfers which conclusively prove an inequity exists wherein modest homeowners are paying far too much in taxes and South of the Highway types are getting away with murder. Overton is non-political – he’s been elected as a Republican and a Democrat, so his “People Not Politics” campaign slogan is indeed factual, a rarity. There are too many special interest types and candidates driven by agendas in this town. Fred won’t be manipulated by any of them and he is beholden to no one but the voters who elect him. Job Potter’s first go around on the town board was marred by the infamous Keyes Island scandal -- a spit of land was sold to the town for nearly twice what it was worth

using Community Preservation Funds. Potter also was involved in another outrageous CPF purchase: A party insider, Marvin Hyman, borrowed $2.2 million, bought an 11-acre parcel, sold most of it back to the town for $1.8 million, and carved four lots worth $1 million each out of the remainder. Potter helped grease the skids for Hyman twice: he was on the Planning Board when the application was greenlighted, and on the town board when it voted to allow Hyman to exceed clearing limitations on his lots. All that time the town put off an upzoning that would have squashed Hyman’s subdivision – until the day after the deal was signed. Potter left the board two years after Bill McGintee was elected town supervisor, so he gets points for having good sense, and for the most part Potter did good work on the Planning Board and was at times effective during his stint on

the town board. It is also true CPF money flowed freely back then, and a lot of deals were made that should have been given more scrutiny. Potter continued to serve on McGintee’s finance committee after he left office, and given the fact the town budget officer was arrested and the town lost $30 million during the disgraced former supervisor’s tenure, Potter should rightly be held accountable for not speaking out. More recently Potter was the only candidate to hedge on the CfAR survey about beach driving. He used the word “compromise” and that worries us. “Compromise” to us means giving in to those who would limit our rights as freeholders to unfettered access to our beaches. Given Potter’s baggage, it’s probably best to look for some fresh faces. Kathee Burke-Gonzalez, the former Springs School Board head, served on that board for eight years. She is indeed a fresh face, though Continued ON page 49.

For Southampton Town Board

There are four candidates vying for two seats on the Southampton Town Board, and each impressed The Independent editorial staff. In fact, this may be the most impressive group of candidate we’ve had in for interviews in some time. Jeff Mansfield of Bridgehampton, a former finance professional who also has a Masters Degree in Business Administration and a Law Degree from Syracuse University, stressed his local roots. If truth be told, though, he has only lived full time out here for a few years. Most of his community service

revolves around his personal life — at Bridgehampton School, where his kids attend, Mecox Bay, where he sails, and the Bridgehampton CAC, where he lives. Southampton is a big town, and each hamlet has its own nuances. Mansfield would benefit from more seasoning. Frank Zappone, the current Deputy Supervisor, is a well-liked and respected figure in town hall. An ally of Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst, Zappone could keep his job if she wins her reelection bid. He knows the ins and outs of town, and his conciliatory demeanor

allows him to work well with the assorted factions that do business with the town. Though he would doubtless do a good job on the town board, he is outflanked by the other candidates when it comes to hands on community service. Stan Glinka, a Bridgehampton Bank executive and a Hampton Bays resident, has an amazing resume rich in community service. He strikes us as apolitical, is studious and open minded, and listens before he speaks. He will fit perfectly on the town board, working with the moderate holdovers Bridget

WHAT LEADERS ARE SAYING ABOUT FRED OVERTON KENNETH L. LAVALLE, NY STATE SENATOR: “I look forward to partnering with Fred Overton to address issues of concern to East Hampton residents. Fred’s experience, work ethic and dedication make him an excellent candidate for Town Council. Please join me on November 5th in supporting Fred Overton for East Hampton Town Council.” LEE M. ZELDIN, NY STATE SENATOR: “We need Fred Overton and his wealth of experience and knowledge to continue his public service as a member of the East Hampton Town Board. Vote for Fred on November 5th.” FRED W. THIELE, JR., NY STATE ASSEMBLYMAN: “Fred Overton grew up in East Hampton and understands the financial and environmental challenges the Town now faces. He has held elected offices for over 25 years, and has been a fair and honest public servant and safety volunteer in the community throughout his life. Fred’s institutional knowledge and experience in Town government has helped 13 administrations serve the people of East Hampton regardless of their political affiliation, and I always look forward to his help and input when things need to get done.” JAY SCHNEIDERMAN, COUNTY LEGISLATOR: “Fred Overton served as Town Clerk during the time I served as Supervisor of the Town of East Hampton. Fred has a deep understanding of town government and has shown his commitment to the community through the years of his volunteer work with the Springs Fire Department.” CHRIS NUZZI, SOUTHAMPTON TOWN COUNCILMAN: “Having grown up in East Hampton I’ve watched Fred during his years of service to the Town. I know that with Fred’s extensive experience and knowledge of how efficient government works, and his bi-partisan approach to problem solving, he’s ready from Day One to do the work East Hampton citizens need him to do moving forward.” DIANE McNALLY, CURRENT CLERK OF THE EAST HAMPTON TOWN TRUSTEES: “As a former Town Trustee Fred Overton understands what’s needed to protect the fragile environment of our beaches, bottomlands and waters. As someone I’ve worked with as a Trustee for over 25 years, I know Fred supports public access and our baymen wholeheartedly. Fred will work with the Trustees and the Town Board to protect our traditions and to keep East Hampton the beautiful place it is to live.” CAPTAIN JOE McBRIDE, MEMBER, MONTAUK BOATMAN’S AND CAPTAIN’S ASSOCIATION: “Fred Overton has a record of supporting the fishing industries in the Town of East Hampton, both sport and commercial. He will do what’s best for the citizens as he has over the last 25 years. Please join me in your support for Fred Overton for a better town government.” BRUCE A. BATES, EAST HAMPTON TOWN EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS COORDINATOR: “East Hampton needs a Councilman that is knowledgeable about local history, our natural resources, and the challenges our residents face every day. Fred Overton has that knowledge, possesses the skills to effectively communicate, and has the tenacity to complete difficult tasks. Fred Overton has my respect, and my vote!” VOTE FOR FRED OVERTON FOR EAST HAMPTON TOWN BOARD NOVEMBER 5TH ENDORSED BY THE REPUBLICAN, INDEPENDENCE AND CONSERVATIVE PARTIES Paid for by Friends of Fred Overton

Fleming and Christine Scalera to get things accomplished without being hindered by party politics. Glinka is the kind of candidate with overwhelming credentials; frankly, candidates like him seldom choose to serve the public. Best of all, he’s born and raised here, a true local, and that counts for a lot with us. Southampton is a town where a $50,000 contribution will fast track a permit for a wild party, and a few phone calls to well-placed friends will get you a permit to set off fireworks by a Piping Plover nest. Brad Bender does his work in the underbelly of town, far removed from the privileged who turn their money into power. For years Bender has spoken for those who have never had a voice before, and his persistence and dedication have yielded remarkable results. Bender has had a hand in almost every project that has improved his Flanders/Riverside/Northampton neighborhood over the course of the past decade. There are no pampered pure breeds feasting on Wagu beef in the Bender household – he has three rescue dogs, two of them deaf. Bender doesn’t have pricey universities on his e d u c a t i o n a l r e s u m e , a n d h e hasn’t been CEO of any major corporations. But he offers far more -- his willingness to represent those who have never had a voice in town hall before, not just the deeppocketed South of the Highwayers who use this place as a personal playground but give nothing back to the downtrodden. Bender, who narrowly missed getting elected two years ago, picked himself up and went back to work the next day. He has logged thousands of hours doing volunteer work for this community and his list of accomplishments is impressive. As a gay man he’ll bring representation to an important segment of our community that has too often gone without. We hope he will be able to withstand the petty politics that sometime creep into the town’s business. Should he find himself on the minority we trust he will make certain the board’s business is conducted openly and for the good of all residents, not just a chosen few party insiders and fat cats. The Independent endorses Stan Glinka and Brad Bender for the Southampton Town Board.

We Endorse East Hampton Town Trustees East Hampton Town Justice

We were impressed with both Carl Irace and Steven Tekulsky during the interview process, and we feel both would serve the public well as town justice. Both have served as ADAs and in private practice. We particularly like Irace’s support of video arraignments. We think both men understand there is disenchantment among folks who think code violators get off too easily. The edge, to us, is not based on courtroom experience – both have plenty of that. It’s more about paying dues, and immersing oneself in the community. Tekulsky, a longtime firefighter and former chief, has done that. We are also impressed with how many people know him and respect him. The fact that two former town justices endorsed him also counts. Tekulsky ran a spirited but unsuccessful campaign for a seat on the bench four years ago, losing by a slender margin -- now his time has come. There may well be a place for both candidates – the way the court is growing we may soon need a third town justice. Either way, we expect we’ll see Irace on the bench before long. The Independent endorsement, though, goes to Steven Tekulsky.

It’s been a troubling few years for the East Hampton Town Trustees, whose authority has been gradually eroded, either deliberately or otherwise. The Independent has not interviewed all the candidates so we limit our observations to those we do know. Dianne McNally, who serves as the trustees’ clerk and has served that board in some capacity for 30 years, including being a trustee since 1990, is indispensible. Deborah Klughers has proven to be a godsend to the board and is one of the hardest workers and best educated – she has a master’s degree in marine conservation. The Independent did not endorse her two years ago and we publicly acknowledge our mistake. She has earned our wholehearted support for another two-year term. Dr. Stephanie Forsberg, a six-year board veteran, is among the new breed of trustee with educational credentials to match her experience on our waterways – she holds a doctorate degree from Stony Brook. Newcomer Ira Barocas, a licensed master captain, brings 38 years of on the water experience to the board and will make an excellent addition. Mike Bottini, a local naturalist, is a well respected environmentalist with an impressive resume. Check his name. Nat Miller is a bayman and 13th generation bubby. Nothing more need be said. Afton DuSunno has immersed herself in this community, volunteering at the Day Care Learning Center, CMEE, and is a member of LVIS and the League of Women Voters. She’s a doer – she participates in beach cleanups, sails, and volunteers at two local churches. Her energy and her conciliatory nature make her a perfect fit for the board. We urge voters to say no to Bill Taylor, who was the Democratic Party chair during the McGintee scandal and whose silence cost taxpayers millions. He’s already collecting a healthy salary from his do-nothing job with the town and he has a lot of nerve to expect us to give him another cent of taxpayers’ money.

We Endorse For County Legislature Southampton Town Highway Superintendent

Suffolk County Legislator Jay Schneiderman, a former East Hampton Town Supervisor, is running for his fifth (and last) two year term. Chris Nuzzi, after eight years on the Southampton Town Board, is challenging for the seat on the horseshoe. During the interview process it was obvious both have a firm grasp on what it takes to be an effective legislator, and that’s no accident – both have excelled in their respective jobs. Both candidates are moderates who have worked in a bipartisan manner and both have earned the respect of voters. In the final analysis, though, Schneiderman is already doing it on the county level. Though an Independent, he works well with the Democratic majority of the l egislature and has the ear of County Executive Steve Bellone. He has repeatedly delivered for the East End, and has been completely accessible during his eight-year stint – his door is literally open to any constituent, and many have availed themselves of the opportunity. There is no cogent reason to make a change: we’ve gotten extraordinary representation in Hauppauge and we can look forward to two more years. At that time term limits will kick in for Schneiderman, and Nuzzi would make an excellent replacement. The Independent endorses Jay Schneiderman.

1) Furnace Cleaning and Tune Up 2) Fuel Deliveries Scheduled 3) Temperature Monitoring System Installed

The incumbent, Alex Gregor, had done a good job resuscitating the highway department after taking over for Bill Masterson, who ran it like his own personal fiefdom. Gregor has clashed with Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst but he is a tireless worker, and the cleanup he engineered after Superstorm Sandy was truly remarkable. Gregor’s insistence on sticking with his plan to make “Cromer’s Corner” in Noyac safer is a perfect example of how his persistence pays off – that area has been a hotspot for vehicular accidents for 50 years. The challenger, Dave Betts, who currently is the town’s Code Enforcement Officer, is an efficient administrator and his criticism that unused borrowed money should be used to pare down outstanding bonds has merit. Both men are valuable managers and have served the town well. The Code Enforcement Office has clamped down on illegal housing, something East Hampton Town has been unable to do. Frankly, Betts is doing a great job. If he were to switch over to the Highway Department, there would not only be a learning curve there, but we would need a new guy to fill his shoes in Code Enforcement. Both these departments are functioning well – let’s keep it that way. The Independent endorses Alex Gregor.

Supe Candidates Duke It Out

Independent/Jessica Mackin

Anna Throne-Holst (left) and Linda Kabot (right). By Emily Toy reelection on the Democratic,

Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst and challenger Linda Kabot met with Indy editorial staff Friday for a debate, less than two weeks before they face each other at the polls on November 5. Their long political rivalry makes their latest race a highly publicized contest. Kabot, a Republican Quogue resident, served as Southampton supervisor in 2008 and 2009 as well as a town councilwoman from 2002 to 2007. Throne-Holst, an Independent who lives in Sag Harbor, has held the supervisor seat for the past four years and was a town councilwoman in 2008. At Friday’s debate, issues of code enforcement practices, policing, the environment, and the town trustees were all hot topics. And each candidate has her own strategy for improvements. Throne-Holst, who is seeking

Independence and Working Families party lines, said the town has made strides to improve code enforcement during her tenure as supervisor. She relocated its headquarters from Hampton Bays to town hall in Southampton Village. Throne-Holst charged it was better to reorganize code enforcement under the town attorney’s office and that it ensures the town’s ability to “oversee activity.” Kabot, whose name is on the Republican and Conser vative ticket, said code enforcement is the top priority in the town of Southampton, with most of the activity “mostly west of the canal.” “I don’t believe the town has gone far enough,” she said. “A complete organizational change needs to happen.” As far as the town’s police department is concerned, ThroneHolst believes there hasn’t been

“an erosion of confidence” with the public’s perception of the department. The supervisor stood by her decision to appoint former Southampton Village police chief William Wilson to helm STPD in 2011, noting he was “anything but an absentee chief,” and mentioning the town board did deal with some disciplinary issues in the wake of his resignation, where a now-disgraced officer made faulty arrests. Kabot said she would have endorsed Captain Anthony Tenaglia (who was favored to fill the position at the time). Kabot also noted the town’s biggest spending in the budget is on the police force, opining the department is understaffed. “We need to work on rebuilding the public’s trust,” she said. The town board’s relationship with the town trustees was another hot button issue during the debate. Kabot said she would support the

IN THE NEWS

trustees’ call for a separate tax line within the annual budget, saying it’s “critical we support the elected board of trustees.” Kabot charged the current supervisor feels the trustees “need to be managed.” That’s causing concern for Kabot. “There needs to be a partnership, since they feel a disconnect,” Kabot said. Throne-Holst said cooperation on issues concerning the town’s waterways, beaches and other environmental matters has to come from both sides. The supervisor opined it was not possible for five trustees to deal with cleaning up local waters alone. “That’s not fair to them,” she said, noting the reasons she started the clean water coalition was to give the trustees the tools to fix the problem. “This is the technical assistance that they need,” she added. “I don’t have an adversarial relationship with them.” Kabot chastised the incumbent for alienating the trustees; ThroneHolst said they need to “be brought into compliance.” In closing, Kabot said there were some good things happening and some not so good things happening with Southampton Town. “I’m offering the people a choice,” she said. “There’s lots of not done stuff. I think the community is frustrated. I love my community, but I feel there are too many things that are at a standstill.” Throne-Holst noted the town’s stable and rebalanced financial position were a direct result of her work. “We have a very different and functional town board today,” she said. “We’re working together and getting people to the table that wouldn’t normally come to the table.” Kabot countered that ThroneHolst, who took office in 2010, was claiming financial reforms she put in place the previous year as her own. Bishop Legal Costs Soar By Rick Murphy

Embattled Congressman Tim Bishop, the subject of an FBI investigation and a pending investigation of the House Committee On Ethics, has been spending a lot of money on legal fees. As of August Bishop spent a total of $80,000 of campaign funds on lawyers, including $20,000 to Dechert LLP on July 20 and $20,000 to Perkins Coie on August 20, according to Newsday’s Tom Brune. Dechert LLP, a huge firm with offices all over the world, specializes in financial matters; Perkins Coie is counsel of record for the Democratic National Committee, and its clients include nearly all Democratic members of the United States Congress. The Office of Congressional Ethics, after a three-month investigation, concluded “a substantial reason to believe that a violation of House rules, standards of conduct and federal law occurred.” The OCE forwarded its findings to the House Committee on Ethics. Bishop stands accused of trying to fast track a permit for a fireworks event at a Sagaponack oceanfront home of a constituent, Eric Semler,

in exchange for a campaign contribution, which, if true, is an illegal quid-pro-quo. Perkins Coie urged that House committee to end the probe. “OCE’s written findings are deeply flawed and provide no basis for further review. But the testimony and documents provide the Committee with all of the information it needs to close this matter. . . . Representative Bishop respectfully requests the Committee to dismiss OCE’s referral and take no further action,” wrote Brian G. Svoboda, an attorney with the firm. Instead, the House Committee has extended the probe. The Independent broke the story that the FBI, perhaps in conjunction with the Justice Department, is also investigating Bishop about the same matter. In fact, FBI agents were in Southampton last spring asking questions about the fireworks event. Bishop has steadfastly refused to comment about the matter other than to state repeatedly that he “welcomes an impartial investigation.” At one point, though, he refused to answer questions posed by OCE investigators about a $5000 contribution made by Semler.

By Rick Murphy

RICK’S SPACE Nighty Night You know the old adage . . . early to bed, early to rise. I wish I was one of those people, I really do. Lots of my friends get up at the crack of dawn. They jog. They go on bike rides. They go fishing. “It’s the prettiest time of the day,” they say. I wouldn’t know. I still have a lot of friends who stay up late, too. They go to bars and clubs. They like the late night talk shows. But they get up before me, too. “I only need four hours of sleep a day,” they say. Not me. I like to go to bed early and get up late. This prompted Karen to wonder aloud if there was something wrong with me.

I don’t want to say Karen is a hypochondriac (but she is). “I have that new flesh eating disease,” she’ll say. “What new flesh eating disease?” “Necrotizing Fasciltis.” “I thought that’s when you have sex with a dead body?“ No, Karen claimed it was when bacteria gets inside an open wound and then it starts eating your healthy tissue and then it consumes your organs. “And then it eats the leftover chicken in the refrigerator?” I asked. Then she got mad because I wasn’t upset she was rotting to death. “OK,” I said, “Show me your open

wound.” She put her index finger up. “They call that a paper cut,” I told her. Once she was convinced she had Bell’s Palsy, apparently because she said one side of her face looked like it was “droopy.” “Sounds like one of the seven dwarfs,” I wisecracked, which earned me a night on the couch. She had already read up on it, and decided it was either the result of a brain tumor or a stroke. Turns out, the old mirror in her bathroom was warped. Then there was the time she became convinced she had EpsteinBarré syndrome. I told her she was mistaken, though it was likely she had Guillain–Barré syndrome – that sent her digging into the medical journals. The funny thing about all these diseases is that they are named after real people, which brings me to the old joke about Lou Gehrig by Denis Leary: Gehrig died from Lou Gehrig’s Disease – how did he NOT see that coming? In my house I live in fear of what I call the Jim Henson Syndrome. Every time I cough I hear about it. “You have to go to the doctor,” Karen will say. “Why?” “Because Jim Henson had a cough and he didn’t go to the doctor and then he died.” My guess is he contracted some weird disease from Big Bird or maybe he got chronic fatigue syndrome because he was always playing with his puppet. Anyhow, to get back to my sleeping, Karen worries because it must be symptomatic of a really bad disease. A lot of people have suggested I sleep too much. That’s

because in addition to going to bed early and getting up late, I also like a nice nap in the afternoon. I tell people, “In my country it is traditional to take a siesta.” The problem is I’m from America, and also a siesta by definition is a “short” nap and mine last four or five hours. I looked up my symptoms on WebMD. One main cause of fatigue was depression. When I told Karen, she immediately assumed it was her fault. “You’re depressed because you don’t love me anymore, is that it? “A c t u a l l y,” I r e p l i e d , “ I ’ m depressed because I had to get out of bed this morning.” ZOCDoc suggested I may have Obstructive Sleep Apnea. I ruled that out – I believe I may have Constructive Sleep Apnea, though. Netdoctor.com suggested chronic fatigue might occur if I drink too much alcohol or coffee. I ruled that out, because I drink too much alcohol and drink too much coffee. Finally I consulted the great seer and mystic Siri, who lives in my iPhone. “Why am I always tired? I asked her. “Because you don’t get enough sleep,” she replied. And there it was. Here I was worried about spending too much time in bed when the reality is I don’t spend enough. This prompted me to do more research – I found this article in the Huffington Post, about a study led by John Axelsson of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute: “Our findings show that sleep-deprived people appear less healthy, less attractive and more tired compared with when they are well rested,” wrote the researchers. “This suggests that humans are sensitive to sleeprelated facial cues.” The conclusion: “A good night’s sleep enhances beauty” - thus the definition of “beauty sleep.” So I’m going to sleep even more from now on, even if Karen insists on calling it a “coma.”

Election Shenanigans We were told one town board candidate asked an organizer of an upcoming debate in Springs for a list of the questions she would be asked – in advance. Apparently, this practice is fairly commonplace. The CCOM has long been suspected of packing the audience with people who ask loaded questions. The League of Women Voters approve questions to be asked in advance, or at least they did when they asked our editor to be a moderator years back. We said no, we’ll ask our own questions, thank you. Our elected officials need to act in real time – there is no time for rehearsals. Keep that in mind when choosing which candidates to vote for. Illegal Campaign Contributions Last week the East Hampton Republican Committee accused the East Hampton Conservators, a political action group, of illegally buying ads for local Democratic

Who Can You Trust?

To the Editor, What is this election all about? I think it all boils down to TRUTH and TRUST. I am running as a candidate to provide YOU with a CHOICE. WHO CAN YOU TRUST to provide strong, independent leadership and open, honest government? WHO CAN YOU TRUST to restore integrity and capability to the Supervisor’s Office and truly provide sound financial management? Do you want an originator or an imitator? Do you want someone at the helm who represents the everyday people who live and work here, or someone who aligns herself with special interests? I am humbled by the outpouring of support that has been shown to me as my opponent sought to tarnish my record of public service with distortions of the facts, twisted words, and politically-opportunistic manipulations. People know that they can count on Linda Kabot to stand up for the taxpayers and to be AN INDEPENDENT VOICE of the

Party candidates. During the summer, the Democrats accused Republican Dominick Stanzione of not disclosing the source of revenue used to but political ads. The Office of Congressional Ethics reported Congressman Tim Bishop changed the dates of the name and donor of a $5000 contribution. And Linda Kabot has accused Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst of misfiling several times. What do all of these incidents have in common? Nothing – meaning the Board of Elections has done nothing about any of them. In fact, over the years we can’t recall the BOE ever doing anything about these kinds of accusations. We have no way of knowing if violations did occur, but we know one thing – it’s easy to accuse anyone of anything. What’s for sure is that as long as the BOE sits on its hands, these perceived violations will occur more and more frequently, as will accusations of wrongdoing, even if they have no foundation in fact. If the BOE isn’t going to enforce its own regulations, what is the point of having them?

people. I am grateful for the support of so many people from all walks of life, from all political stripes, throughout our Town. For me, it’s about SERVICE ABOVE SELF. With your vote on Tuesday, November 5, we can TAKE BACK THE TOWN from Special Interests. We can move Southampton Town forward in the best interests of our community. It would be my honor to serve you once again as Town Supervisor. For more information, please visit www. LINDAKABOT.com or call 631-219-7218. LINDA KABOT

continue my work with the Trustees to protect our irreplaceable resources. It is important that the Trustees continue the fight to keep our town beaches open for all users. We work tirelessly and fiercely to make sure the people’s rights stay with the people and not just with a select few. Your vote for myself and my colleagues on November 5th will allow us, as your Trustees, to continue moving forward toward our joint goal of working to preserve our East Hampton heritage, traditions, beaches and waterways. NAT MILLER

Re-elect Trustees

Rolling Up My Sleeves

Dear Rick, My name is Nat Miller, I am running for re-election as one of your Town Trustees. I am asking for your vote on November 5th; not only for myself but for the 7 other incumbent Town Trustees also seeking re-election. As a board we function well together and we compliment each other’s areas of expertise. As I talk and work with the current Town Trustees, I know that they, too, are aware of the importance of protecting the town’s heritage. I want to

Dear Rick, Before beginning my campaign for a seat on the East Hampton Town Board, I gave running for office again careful consideration and discussed it with my family for around a year and a half. The voters of this town have elected me to hold public office in East Hampton consistently for the past 25 years, serving as a trustee, an assessor and currently as your town clerk. I believe, my success as an elected official comes from listening to and

serving the public as a party-blind public servant. As June approached, I knew that I wanted to continue to be the people’s voice of reason and experience; and I started my campaign. I know only one way to approach any job I am called upon to do: roll up my sleeves and get right to work in a thoughtful, civil and respectful manner. I am pleased to report that Larry Cantwell and I have worked together for many years. East Hampton Press columnist Tom Clavin last week provided a keen insight into the nature of our working relationship when he observed that: “Two such veteran administrators [Larry and me] on the town board sharply decrease the chance of another budget crisis.” Larry and I have always operated with mutual respect, honest debate and civility between us, especially when we disagree on a matter. The issue of the political make-up of the 2014 Town Board and how it could affect a Cantwell administration has been raised during this campaign. We know today that with Larry running unopposed, the Democratic Party will have a board majority of at least 3 to 2. It is hard not to agree that an entire Democratic Board Continued on Page 28.

provides no checks and certainly no balance. In my view, the election of me and Dominick Stanzione would benefit not only the town, but Larry Cantwell as well. I say this because, firstly, it must be kept in mind that it takes three votes for anything to happen on the board. And, secondly, if Larry is what he claims to be, and I think he is, then he will be open to hearing all sides of a question and will vote the issues based on merit and not based on any preconceived, partisan political position that may be attached to the issue. Clearly, a Board composed of two Democrats and two Republicans (Independents) would provide Supervisor Larry Cantwell with the swing vote, firmer control of his Board and, he truly would be able to govern from the center. If elected, I vow to continue to serve the people of East Hampton, using the knowledge and wisdom I’ve gained throughout the years: fairly, respectfully and honestly. My 25 years of experience in public office, along with my 48 years as a safety and community volunteer, means that I do not require on-the-job training or a refresher course in municipal government when taking office in January, 2014. To make this happen I need your vote on November 5th. FRED OVERTON

Halloween Memories: Part Two J.Z. Holden My father was an artist. His job was to make me a series of crowns from which I’d choose. He cut them from cardboard and gold paper gluing on bits of colored plastic to look like jewels. Then I’d make my queenly outfit. And I always carried a scepter. Brandi Campbell When I was a kid it was such a different world. It was safe for kids to go trick-or-treating alone. I used to go with my sister. One year I was FloJo the track and field star. I wore a tracksuit and the long nails. I remember I loved getting the Snickers in my bag. Julie Waller We’d go to the school parade. You didn’t go to Kmart and buy one back then. We made our own costumes. I remember one year making big clown pants. I was in one leg and my girlfriend was in the other hopping around the gym with a big clown hat on. Sara Strand I’m from Sweden. We don’t really have trick-ortreating at Halloween. We do it at Easter. The children dress up and all the little girls dress as witches. The tradition is from old folklore. Right before Easter all the witches fly to wherever it is that witches go. interested and a lot of folks neither voters, nor residents. Many are tourists or temporary residents, some who vote here, most who don’t; others, economic migrants here to cater to the rest of us in season, and support themselves and their families. All good: this is America. The over 350 year old position of East Hampton Trustee has been continuously at the heart of town government upholding the public’s unrestricted rights to access our beaches, however they may choose, and fulfill the expectations of the Freeholders and Commonalty, all of us who live and own property here, that our town’s waterways, common lands, bottom lands and their bounty will be available for their responsible use, remain healthy and thrive. No news there: you’ve heard it before. Trustees are the conscience of East Hampton. The resort town in which we are fortunate to live, each of us “local by choice,” whether here for 13 generations or voting in your first local election, is faced with critical environmental and property issues: erosion and encroachment are just two. The Trustees’ are your representatives, you, who are the largest landholders in East Hampton, you who freely use the beaches, fish, clam, scallop, swim, boat and dive here, you who breathe our sweet air, and you who are here to enjoy a quiet life in a

beautiful place. Vote now with an eye not to the past, but to the future. Choose trustees who will help you create the kind of town you, your children, and theirs will want to live in. Choose trustees who will advocate for your rights, and your environment, to deal with crowding, water quality, and pollution of every type, whether in the air or water. All are connected. Each major party is running a full slate of nine candidates. Many of the candidates are cross-endorsed by other parties, though notably neither the Democrats or Republicans have allowed their parties to do so. I find that unfortunate. Trustees should be above partisanship. The ballot itself may be confusing. You need to choose nine trustees, but realize that you can vote for any nine, or only one, on any line. You just can’t vote for the same name twice. (Shucks!) All eighteen candidates are running against each other; seven are incumbents. I am listed only on the Democratic line, and I want to serve you. Continued from page 28.

I attended CCOM’s debate on Sunday to hear my son-in-law, Carl Irace. Carl did really great and I don’t think there is any room for debate on that subject. He spoke about how he would use his broad and extensive courtroom experience to improve efficiency in the administration of the Justice Court, bring back Youth Court, and start a Drug Treatment Court. Carl’s opponent didn’t even respond to the statement that Carl has three times as many cases this year in East Hampton Justice Court alone despite the fact that his campaign slogan is “local experience counts.” Obviously he doesn’t mean courtroom experience. What shocked me the most was that Carl’s opponent denied the need for Drug Court when the cover of another local paper had an article about how the school board is considering deploying drugsniffing dogs in the high school because of the ever-increasing drug problem. Drug Treatment Court is a basic service that is available in every other East End town. I was a registered nurse and a high school teacher for 34 years. I know what addiction does to young people and how it can tear families apart. I had a sweet, intelligent student one year that constantly found himself in trouble because of his obvious addiction to drugs. After working in the emergency room, and dealing with hundreds of teenagers the signs become obvious. He was arrested for minor crimes over the years because of his addiction, and he was treated like a criminal instead of a troubled youth or addict. He ultimately died of a drug overdose. I believe he could have been helped by the consistent interaction and rehabilitative methods employed in a Drug Treatment Court. I encourage you and your readers to vote for the candidate that has new ideas to make our court a better place. Vote for Carl Irace on November 5th for East Hampton Town Justice. BOBBIE GAIL COOLEY

22 Crash Drive Rick, If the 2013 East Hampton Town Board election was a football game, one could say that it’s the fourth quarter with two minutes to go. Ball is on the opponent’s two-yard line and it’s fourth and goal. The score is close and yet team Gonzalez feels

that they have left nothing to chance. Our Captain Kathee Burke-Gonzalez is running for the town board and the rest of the team - Nina, Burke, and myself - are ready to get her into the end zone. When the bus left the house, nine months ago, it was basically the four of us. I’m proud to tell you that there is standing room only, on Kathee’s bus, today. The denizens on the bus represent a kaleidoscope of East Hampton. Guess what, Rick? There are even some Eagles, Redskins and Cowboy fans on the bus. Kathee has read her playbook and is aware of the many challenges that face our town. Kathee has been the first one at the practice facility in the morning, meeting and listening to the folks of our town. Kathee has put in the long hours getting ready for the debates. Kathee has been listening and already building consensus, on which will be the correct plays to call in the future. Kathee is a believer in the quality of life of our citizens as well as the quality of life of small law abiding businesses. Kathee believes in fiscal responsibility. Her record speaks loudly at Springs School where she was instrumental in saving the taxpayers over $4 million over the last couple of years. She helped achieve these savings while working under a two percent tax cap. Kathee has endured the cheap personal fouls from the cheap shot players on some of the other teams. Guess what, Rick? Kathee is a lot tougher than those folks, just by the simple fact that she is willing to put herself out there and stand up for her beliefs. We gotta huddle up. While some other candidates are looking at their play books arguing about what trick play they might call, “ah I wrote this play it’s a flea flicker end around out of the two tight end set,” or “gosh I’ve been playing this game for so long I should just get an automatic touchdown.” Guess what, Rick? Team Gonzalez is going old school. We are going with a 22 crash dive up the middle, red alert blocking, on two. That’s right we are giving Kathee the rock, right up the middle. Nina, Burke and myself humbly ask that folks jump on our offensive line and help get Kathee in the end zone. Vote Kathee Burke-Gonzalez row A, November 5th. JOE, NINA AND BURKE GONZALEZ

Make Wise Policy Dear Rick, Town Board candidates Job Potter and Kathee Burke-Gonzalez will bring expertise, commitment, and good sense

to the East Hampton Town Board where they are sorely needed. They know that our residents need to be able to make a living and have an affordable place to live in. They’re committed to preserving open space, public access to our beaches, and dealing with coastal erosion before it’s too late. We can count on them to consider all these interests in making wise policy. In eight years on the town board, Job used his negotiating skills and a respectful disposition to bring about land preservation, historic preservation, and affordable housing. In nine years on the Springs School Board, the last two as president, Kathee skillfully confronted the financial crisis

created by a 22 percent increase in enrollment and a $9,000 per student increase in the tuition Springs pays to East Hampton High School. To keep taxes down, she helped save $4 million for Springs taxpayers. She then guided the community to consensus on how best to cut another $800,000 per year from expenses without sacrificing education. We need Kathee and Job on the town board. I urge everyone to vote for them next Tuesday on Row A. JEANNE FRANKL

Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee(3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goals. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person, must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. after 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. My prayers were answered. Thank you so very much. As requested by J.L. 36-50-

Fred Overton is the most qualified candidate running for a council seat on the East Hampton Town Board this year. Fred observes, finds solutions, and acts to carry them out. For instance, one of Fred’s first hires as Town Clerk was a Latino employee. He also kept all his staff during budget cuts by sharing them with other departments during off-peak times. As Commander of the East Hampton Town American Legion Post 419, Fred brought his post and his executive team to 21st century standards. He is the epitome of a smart, talented, local man who understands that all those who make up East Hampton are vital to each other’s well being. Please vote for Fred Overton this November 5th. Your vote is needed to help choose Fred to serve us, and our Town. HENRIKA CONNER

Hamptons Brand To the Editor, When Anna Throne-Holst ran for Southampton Supervisor, the Republican Party appeared to be in a state of flux. Initially I believed that Ms. Throne-Holst and Highway Superintendent Alex Gregor would bring a measure of objectivity. In her own words, Ms. Throne-Holst promised to keep an open door to all members of the community. Ms. Throne-Holst didn’t keep her word and Mr. Gregor wound up clashing with his constituency and colleagues. Be that as it may, as a woman homeowner my concerns revolve around safety and personal finances both of which appear to be in jeopardy, not because of increases in town taxes which are really a small percent of the overall cost of maintaining a home, but rather because of a lack of civil procedures that protect homeowners from opportunists who, as pointed out by Town Council candidate Jeff Mansfield in his interview

with The Independent, “want a piece of the Hamptons brand.” I’m sure Ms. Throne-Holst is a lovely person but from my perspective she’s not the consensus-builder her handlers allege. Instead she seems to have embraced a type of zero-sum approach that, in my opinion, has slowed property values and the value of the Hamptons brand, particularly west of the canal. SUSAN CERWINSKI

High Regard Dear Editor, I have observed East Hampton Town Board candidate Job Potter over the years and have a high regard for his integrity and abilities. As a councilman, he led the Community Preservation Fund effort that produced 120 individual purchases of open space for the town. He worked successfully with New York State and Suffolk County, non-profits, landowners, and most needed right now -his fellow board members of both parties. As a real estate professional, I understand what it really means to accomplish 120 closings -- each deal has its individual challenges, personalities, and negotiation to a fair price. It takes cooperation, patience, vision, and determination. I am supporting Job Potter on November 5th, and am asking my friends to do so as well. PATTIE ROMANZI

Commitment To Town Dear Rick, I’m writing to express my support for the election of Job Potter as East Hampton Town Councilperson. I have known Job for many years, several of those years working with him during his previous tenure on the town board. During that time, Job was the town board liaison to our Department of

Human Services. As such, I experienced first hand his commitment to the people of our town, their needs and best interests. In addition to providing careful, respectful, professional and fiscally responsible oversight of the operations of the Department, he actively interacted with the staff, becoming knowledgeable about its programs and the people it served. He also worked with us on many community partnership projects. Among these were a Montauk grassroots group working on developing child day care for Montauk working parents, mental health issues, youth programs, affordable housing, a partnership with the Suffolk County Department of Health Services to establish the first full time County Health Center in East Hampton, and partnering with schools, the East Hampton Day Care Center and other community based agencies to develop the beginnings of Project Most. A vote for Job Potter, Larry Cantwell, and Kathee Burke-Gonzalez is a vote for the good, responsible, responsive town government by people with the experience and commitment to our environment and the best interests of the people of East Hampton that we need. EDNA STECK, LMSW

Elephant And Mouse Dear Rick, A shameful political event took place on Sunday 10/13 in front of the Washington Veterans Memorial. The veterans were prevented from entering the memorial, it having been fenced off due to the government shutdown or more precisely, the GOP Government Shutdown. And who would ironically, one might say dishonestly, show up to “commiserate” with the disheartened veterans? None other than the very ones primarily responsible for initiating the unnecessary and destructive action which they championed and cheered

when they succeeded. They were Ted Cruz, his echo Mike Lee and the ever-ready opportunist, half governor Sara Palin. They soulfully decried with repeated speeches the horrible injustice at hand, much to the cheers of the vets, while of course blaming it on President Obama. There was also the Freedom Watch’s Larry Klayman doing the ever popular trump, “Obama the Muslim” shtick, and all with the Confederate flag as well as the infamous Gadsden, “Don’t Tread On Me” flag held proudly aloft. I cringed hearing my fellow veterans being duped by these outright liars who were taking advantage of their grief and making make fools of them merely to further their very own political ambitions. Perhaps there are still enough of the old guard Republicans left to be Tea-ed off at this cyst festering in their party and lance

it once and for all before it infects the entire party. There is the old adage of the elephant being terrified by a mouse. Let us hope that it is merely an anecdote and that the true symbolic Republican figurehead displays greater courage. NICHOLAS ZIZELIS

Able To Act To the Editor, East Hampton voters will face a once in a lifetime opportunity on November 5, 2013 to solve the problem of aircraft noise. This year’s town board election will determine Town policy for managing East Hampton airport for the next 20 years. Really. But, the aircraft noise problem our airport creates, not only for residents of our Town, but for the entire East End, will only be solved if candidates embracing Quiet Skies Coalition principles are elected. Airport noise has been a problem for decades, and is now much worse. Increasing use of our airport of helicopters,

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

jets and seaplanes by the ultra-rich has ruined the peaceful enjoyment of our homes, properties, and natural habitats. East Hampton Town Board can legally control noise by setting reasonable business hours and curfews, closing the airport on weekends, limiting numbers of flights in a given time period, and completely excluding some of the noisiest aircraft – but, only if the Town Board stops taking Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant money. The town currently has contractual obligations to the FAA, which expire on December 31, 2014. Then, the Town of East Hampton, as owner and operator of this airport will be able to act! The town will be able to operate a safe and QUIET airport paid for by airport users, which is respectful of the rights of residents to the peaceful enjoyment of their homes and properties, without abandoning the rights of our community to another twenty-year contract with the FAA. The Quiet Skies Coalition maintains: these are our skies; this is our airport! The airport can be financially self-supporting and the Town of East Hampton must not take any more FAA money until the noise problem is solved and the FAA accepts East Hampton’s reasonable aircraft access limits for noise control. QSC surveyed all four candidates for East Hampton Town Board to see if they agree with our position. Job Potter and Kathee BurkeGonzalez agree and therefore achieve an endorsement by the Quiet Skies Coalition. Councilman Dominick Stanzione and Fred Overton did not respond to the survey.

East End Business & Service

IN THE NEWS

However, recent reports show Mr. Stanzione seems determined to surrender the Town’s proprietary rights again, if reelected. This is our community’s last chance to effectively solve the problem of airport noise. Really. KATHLEEN CUNNINGHAM

Weak In The Knees

Dear Rick, Running for town-wide office is an incredibly humbling, tremendously gratifying, and at times a thoroughly anxiety provoking experience. Time and time again over the course of the last six months I hurled myself out of my comfort zone, sometimes a little weak in the knees, only to discover that the rewards were beyond my wildest dreams. Over the course of the last six months I have had the privilege to meet and speak to hundreds and hundreds of residents from Wainscott to Montauk. Whether they were grabbing a cup of coffee before work, or picking up their mail at the post office during lunch, or shopping for their weekly groceries, they took the time to stop and meet me and smile. And for that I am incredibly grateful. The last six months have been an incredible journey. One I hope to continue. Next Tuesday, November 5th, our community will decide who they want to represent them on the Town Board. I hope that our community will give me the opportunity to serve. On Election Day, please vote on Row A for Kathee Burke-Gonzalez for East Hampton Town Board. KATHEE BURKE-GONZALEZ

The Scary Story Once upon a time there was a farm and it was haunted. It had monsters all over it. The monsters were vampire bats, shiny skeletons, tarantula spiders, Jack-o-lanterns with arms and legs and zombies that popped out of the ground to eat people’s brains. The Sagaponack School happened to be taking a field trip to that same haunted farm. When the kids arrived at the farm they noticed there were monsters all over who were trying to take over the farm. The kids knew they had to help save the farm by chasing the ugly monsters off. They grabbed their metal lunchboxes and ran off the bus

shouting, “Attack the monsters!” The monsters saw the kids running towards them and yelled, “Retreat!” All the monsters ran to the corn maze which just happened to be the zombies’ graveyard and they tried to hide there. The kids ran into the corn maze and yelled, “WE are not afraid of you and we are going to take back the farm.” At that very second the graveyard disappeared. It disappeared because the children were not afraid of them. The monsters were gone and the kids had saved the farm. The farm had a celebration to thank the kids for saving them from the monsters.

The Night of The Living Book One night two boys named Cooper and Broudy were having a sleepover. They were reading a book. It was about a living book. They were very scared. Then, they heard a groaning sound. The book started to talk, and grew arms, legs, and razor sharp teeth. It came charging right for them and chomping. It tried to eat them. But they were too fast. They locked the book in the closet. The book was banging and pounding on the door. When they opened the door, they saw a zombie with a mustache. It turned out to be their friend Richard. There was no sign of the living book. The book had somehow disintegrated. Cooper, Broudy, and Richard all went to sleep and never saw the living book again.

FIRST PLACE 4 to 6 Avery Charron, Springs School, Grade 6 It was 2460. The Earth was more populated and polluted than ever, and most of the population was not even human. In 2032 humans found life on other planets. In 2246 they taught the alien creatures how to speak English through a robotic screen that allowed them to see us and us to see them. And just who are these aliens? There are rock heads from Mars, which are reddish brown and can live with no water for years. There are the Mercurians, who are pretty much a big flame. You don’t want to get them angry, or you might get burnt. There’s also the Neptunians, who are chill physically and mentally. They love what we call snowboarding. There are too many to name. Last month scientists announced a new thing called a Warp Tube. It allows aliens to

travel here at supersonic speeds. It’s only been a month since it has been made, and it’s already tuned bad. People and aliens are fighting. Cities are in flames. It isn’t safe to go outside. One day I was watching my 3D touch screen, holographic TV when it turned off and bold letters flashed across the glass, saying, “YOU HAVE BEEN DRAFTED TO PULL THE PLUG. COME TO THE ABANDONED FACTORY ON BROOK STREET.” Then the TV turned on, and it went back to the news. I did not know what it meant, so I was curious to see. I ran to the factory, dodging flaming pieces of building and alien laser beams. When I arrived at the crumbling ruins of the factory, there were five other kids there. Soon two scientists showed up, skinny guys that looked like they were

born with a microscope in their hands. They led us to a room and said “Hello, we brought you here to pull the plug. The plug is the power source for the warp beams. It has been commandeered by the alien forces and is out of our control now. But if is pulled all aliens will be transported back to their homes. It may cause death, deformation, and you can be crippled.” One of the other boys said, “Why did you choose us?” “We need smart people for this mission. We checked your school report cards.” Two guards covered in shiny armor grabbed us and attached us to a large mechanized robot. We all started struggling to get out, but instead our actions caused the robotic limbs to move. Our metal beast burst out of the factory and

into the midst of the battle that had consumed the city. Laser blasts bounced off our steel skin, glass shattered on our head, and fire raged around us. Yet our metal beast stomped across town and reached the heavily guarded plug near the edge of town. I struggled in fear, but it only caused plasma missiles to launch from our mech and create tremendous explosions. Alien limbs and green blood rained around us. My heart was pounding. We pulled the plug. I felt the power surging through my body. The other boys were surrounded by pulsating blue electricity. That’s when I realized that we had won. Earth had won. I closed my eyes and saw my family, my little brother. It had all been worth it. I smelled burnt metal. Then everything went black.

The case of amnesia This story begins with a man named Bob. Bob was an evil wizard. One foggy evening Bob was walking through town when he got robbed! Bob punished the robber by casting a dark magic spell on him. At first the robber thought nothing of this because he did not believe in dark magic. The spell made the robber have extreme amnesia. The next night when the robber went to bed he started to forget everything that had ever happened to him. When the robber went into town the next day all of his friends said “hi” to him but he said nothing back. The robber did not know that his amnesia was contagious. So all of the robber’s friends started to get amnesia. One day the robber spread his amnesia to an explorer who visited very populated cities, so when the explorer left on his next adventure he visited HUGE cities and everyone got the disease. The disease spread across the whole world. They say that some people have the disease to this day!!!!!!!! -_-

THE CURSED HOUSE

Alexander Choinski, Southampton Elementary School, Grade 3

Once upon a time 20 years ago, a family moved into a new house. Bu,t what they did not know was that the house was haunted, with a ten thousand year curse. The night they moved in freaky things started happening. The mother made a casserole, but as soon as they stuck a fork in it, it turned to dust. Then a skull shaped spirit came out of it. The spirit then turned into big bold words saying:“Get Out Of This House”. They ignored it. The next day the word “Beware” was carved out in the wall. Then later that evening when the family was just about to go to bed, a demon monster with horns and wings came to the house. It also had a scythe like the grim reaper. It said “You were warned”. Then the demon opened up a portal with his scythe and the portal sucked in the small child. After that, the demon monster jumped in the portal. Next, the portal closed in the blink of an eye. The parents were so scared they didn’t know what to do. The next day when the father entered the bathroom, he began to be sucked into the toilet. He was being sucked in like a magnet. Struggling only made it worse. (Legend has it he still roams the sewers, immortal and forced to eat only random things people accidentally flushed, and the occasional near-death rat.) The mother had enough. The following day she armed herself. She bought a machete and a machine gun. Then she came back to the house. She stood in the middle of the living room and said:You want this house, my house?! Come and get it!”

The Halloween Scare It was a cold October night, everyone was care-free, without the slightest fright. The sky was dark, And then, there it was, a screameveryone then knew it was Halloween. Spooky ghosts, goblins, and so much more, is the Halloween magic all kids adore. All different characters walking the streets, with one thing in common- they all say "Trick-or-Treat!" On that street a group of kids walked to a decrepit house, wondering what's inside while watching out for a mouse. They tip-toed up the floors that began to creek, all to find a solution to what caused the shriek. They searched and hunted- looking for clues. Was it a ghost? A witch? It's so hard to choose. There's so many sounds on Halloween night, almost always giving us fright. They found it, on a projection screen... A ghost that looked somewhat real (at most!) So children beware of what's heard and what's seenFor after all, it was Halloween!

Tap Tap Wednesday, 10/11/02 Today I had the nightmare. I was walking down a path. It was pitch black. I didn’t know where I was going, and as I progressed, the rustling behind me got louder. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t turn my head. Then I heard something so horrible, and definitely not human. My legs started moving before I even had control. Suddenly I reached the end of the path, and there was a closet. The Thing was closing in at a pace unimaginable. So I opened the closet. In the closet was The Thing. Every time it beats me here. I don’t know how. Its rotting flesh gave way to reveal its ribs and rotting entrails. What was most terrifying was it somewhat resembled a human. Then its degrading hand reached out and tapped my head and whispered “Soon”. I don’t know why I keep these entries. It’s always the same. The Dream. Or should I say nightmare. It started when I moved that mirror. I always used to use it to get ready in the morning. But it was old, and it came with the house after we moved in. But we just got a new one and replaced it, and moved that one into my closet. I have to go now, I have to finish redecorating my room. Friday, 10/13/02 Sorry I didn’t write yesterday. I was finishing redecorating my room. It’s so pretty now! And my old mirror is in the closet. It’s new home. Everything is perfect. I didn’t have the dream last night, and I think it’s a good sign.

Goodnight. I just put away my diary and turned off the lights. I’m so tired. I’ll just go to sleep… *Tap tap* My eyes fly open. It’s dead quiet. I could have swore I heard something- *Tap* *tap* *tap* *tap* What is that? *Tap* *Tap* *Tap* *Tap* *Tap* *Tap* If it’s my little sister, I’m going to kill her. *BANG* *BANG* *BANG* “QUIT IT!”, I yell. It goes quiet. I put my head down and close my eyes- *SLAM* *SLAM* *SLAM* *SLAM* That’s it, I’m finished. I know it’s coming from the closet by now. I get up, and walk to the closet. I throw the door open. But it’s empty. Nothing there except the mirror. I look at the mirror, and a hand appears and hits the mirror from the other side- *BANG* *BANG* *BANG* *BANG* Then I see its face come into view. It’s The Thing. I look into its eyes. I can’t move. Its gaze paralyzed me. It kept slamming the mirror, as I stood there. Then the mirror fell, and smashed. The moment its gaze broke with mine, I regained power over my body. I scream so loud I almost burst a lung. I bolt towards the nearest door I see, my bathroom. I dive into the room, and slam the door behind me. My nightmare has turned into reality. I wait for its inhuman scream, for it to start bashing the door down. But the sound never comes. I go to open the door, but then I remember the lock on my bathroom door is broken. So I settle in for the night. I wake up and not even an inch away from me, I hear *Tap* *Tap*

Third Place Colin Carroll, Our Lady of the Hamptons, Grade 8 John was just walking down the road when it happened. It was Halloween and everyone was outside trick-or-treating. A man was walking down the street towards them in a very life-like costume. He seemed to be walking with a limp and had a lot of fake blood on himself. John found this to be very odd. He had never seen an adult take Halloween so seriously. Then another person appeared and then another. All of the sudden there was about twenty people walking towards them all wearing the same costume. Down the street he heard a scream, “Zombies!” John realized that these weren’t people, they were zombies! John started to run back to his house, not knowing where else he should go. John came home to a pack of the undead. They were pounding on the door, trying to get in. This gave John hope though. His parents must be alive if zombies are trying to get in. He ran from the house, knowing that if he tried to get in, he would probably be killed. John decided to go to

the police station. He knew how to use a gun from his father. If he could find one, he could save his family. John found the police station empty. He looked around, trying to find the armory. He found it open with only one gun and a box of ammo left. John loaded the gun and put the rest of the bullets into the bag that he was using to hold candy. He ran back to his house so that he could rescue his family. When John arrived home he discovered that the zombies had just broken through the door. John raced inside, desperate to find his family. They were holed up in the living room, using furniture as a barricade. John knew that the only way to save his family was to get rid of the undead. He went throughout the house clearing it out. Then he heard a very odd sound. It sounded like his alarm clock. Then it hit John. I must be dreaming, he thought. I guess it didn’t help that last night I finished a whole season of the “Walking Dead.” John woke up, got on his clothes, and went to school.

Some people go to a shelter and know what they want, a specific size or breed. Others are on a rescue mission. They are looking for a dog that needs them the most, the one who has been waiting the longest or has a special need. These are the true rescue heroes. Hayley needs a rescue hero. She has been at the shelter since 2010. The volunteers who walk her will tell you how great she is, how she loves to play fetch and will entertain herself with a ball. Brookhaven Animal Shelter is going the extra mile to encourage adoption and reduce overcrowding. Fees have been waived through the end of 2013 and S/N, vacs and licensing is included. Meet them half way. Call 631-286-4940 or visit them at 300 Horseblock Rd, Brookhaven. Ask for Hayley. Be a rescue hero.

When the Springs School scandal broke Burke-Gonzalez presided over at least one illegal school board meeting – none of the three local papers were notified it was taking place - and perhaps more than that. Her insistence on rehiring the district’s temporary superintendent, Dominic Mucci, backfired because she didn’t know the state requirements governing his rehire, even though this newspaper did two articles about the State Department of Education law that limited his continued employment because he was a double dipper – already collecting a state pension. At times it seemed BurkeGonzalez acted in the best interest of the district’s administrators and insiders and seemed to keep the public out of the loop. The Riverhead Blue Wave is peaking at the right time. The locals improved to 6-1 by besting West Islip Saturday, 33-21, behind the bruising running of Jeremiah Cheatom. The victory put Riverhead in a virtual tie for the lead in Division II, behind Smithtown West, which also sports a 6-1 mark. West Islip dropped to 5-2, good for fourth place in the power rankings 138.57 to 135.72. Cheatom exploded for 228 rushing yards on 38 carries, including a 48-yard touchdown scamper. The Wave rallied from a 14-13 halftime deficit, with Cheatom accounting for two second half touchdowns. The Wave will be in an excellent position to take over sole possession of first place Saturday when the locals take on Newfield (5-2) and Smithtown West travels to take on lowly Centereach Friday and

East Hampton, meanwhile, which takes on the league leaders at home Saturday, cruised to a third straight victory, besting Wyandanch 33-12. Brendan Hughes is turning into a human highlight reel for the Bonackers. He took the opening kickoff 99 yards for a score, and ran another back 85 yards later in the first half. In the fourth Hughes scored yet another TD, this one on a 20-yard interception return. Wyandanch fell to 1-6. The Bonackers, on the playoff bubble, need a strong performance against Babylon to earn a playoff berth. Southampton’s nightmare season continued. The Mariners lost

Time To Think Ahead the time to look ahead to the playoff weeks, 14,15, and 16. The reason is some players have more favorable matchups than others, and since the trading deadline is coming up, you may want to pull off a couple deals to strengthen your playoff team. For example, Detroit plays Philadelphia in Week 14 – that should make for a big day for the Lions’ offense. Carolina plays New Orleans, and the Panthers should put a lot of points on the board. Seattle and San Francisco play each other – two of the best defenses

next few weeks. There are six teams on “Bye” this week – meaning they won’t play. If you haven’t already made adjustments, good luck – you probably waited too long. New England is off Week 10, so if you have Gronk, Brady et al make pick up replacements now. Ditto Kansas City – if you’ve been riding that defense, find another team ASAP. Dallas is off in Week 11, and there are probably five offensive players on the Cowboys who are in fantasy lineups. If you have one or more you need to do something quick. Now is the time when championships are won. Don’t be complacent. “Skippy Brown” recently won the Draft King Spring Fling contest, besting over 1000 other professional fantasy baseball players. This is the time of the season where you know one of three things: you will make the playoffs, you might make the playoffs, or you’re not making the playoffs. If you are 1-7 or 2-6, the best you can do is try to earn some respect from fellow owners and play the role of spoiler. Don’t let up – the contending teams expect you to bring your best team to the table every week. If you are 7-1 or 6-2 you should be good to go. But don’t necessarily play the cards you were dealt. in the league. That means you probably won’t want to start many offensive players from those two teams, not even Frank Gore and Marshawn Lynch. In Week 15 San Diego and Denver play at Mile High Stadium. That should result in a lot of points for both teams. One player to grab now is Keenan Allen, who has quietly developed into the Chargers’ top receiver. Antonio Gates is another player who should have a big game that day. Green Bay and Dallas face off in Week 16 – again, a lot of points could be scored. Terrance Williams, a Cowboys’ receiver, is someone you can probably trade for now that will help you then – he’s developing into a big star. If you are struggling to secure a playoff berth, your focus needs to be a little different. Look ahead to the

NBA To Dominate Winter Sports Scene

The East End professional sports scene could be drearier than usual this winter. Even though the Giants are just two games back in the NFC East, realistic fans understand Big Blue is far from a playoff team. The Jets have exceeded expectations at 4-4, but playing in January still seems like a long shot. The local hockey teams have been underwhelming so far. The Devils took eight games to get their first win of the season. Ironically, that firstdon win came against the Rangers, who opened their season with a 3-6 road trip. The Islanders appear to be a .500 team at best. With the struggle of our football and hockey squads, combined with the hype surrounding the Knicks and Nets, I expect hoops to be the only sport keeping our interest by December.  After an offseason spending spree by owner Mikhail Prokhorov, the Brooklyn Nets are the most intriguing team, on paper, in the NBA. The Nets traded for Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Jason Terry from the Celtics, and picked up Andrei Kirilenko as a free agent. With those four joining an already solid core of Brook Lopez, Deron Williams, and Joe Johnson, this team can compete with the Heat. But,

www.indyeastend.com

Regardless, a team won’t ever win a championship with Carmelo Anthony as the number one option. He doesn’t make players around him better. Also, now that Anthony has opened Pandora’s Box by stating his desire to become a free agent following the season, how does that affect the team chemistry? Bargnani is an enormous talent, but one of the biggest enigmas in the game. J.R. Smith is a mini Carmelo. Add Metta World Peace to this team, and Coach Mike Woodson could have himself plenty of headaches.  Due to the improvement of the Nets, Derrick Rose returning to the Bulls, and the Pacers with another year of experience, the Knicks fall down the food chain in the Eastern Conference. New York is not a contender to knock off the Heat in the East, and their ceiling is the

Eastern Conference Semifinals. The lowest expectations for the Nets should be an appearance to the Eastern Conference finals. General Manager Billy King traded first round picks in 2014, 2016 and 2018 to Boston. They need to produce a deep postseason run to justify mortgaging the future. I believe the leadership from Garnett and Pierce, both in the twilight of their respective careers, will help keep the team focused. Unfortunately, no team in the East will take down the Miami Heat. But, unlike the local hockey and football scene, at least with hoops, we’ll be talking extended playoff runs.   Pete is a lifelong Montauk resident and former sports talk host at 88.7FM WEER. it’s also an enormous challenge to first year head coach Jason Kidd. His biggest test will be keeping Garnett, Pierce, and Terry fresh for the playoff push in April and May. Not only can the Nets compete with the Heat, they have as good a chance as any team in the Eastern Conference to beat Miami in a seven game series. Garnett and Kirilenko will drastically improve a defense that was inconsistent last season.
