“LEAVE THE GUN, TAKE THE CANNOLI” “Leave the gun, take the cannoli.” That one line from The Godfather sums up the Italian way of life. I’m about to squeal on a few million of my fellow Italians. These are honest, upstanding Italians, so I guess you can call this a “Half Valachi.” Here’s our dirty little secret: Most Italians sort of like the Mafia. Italians like the Mafia for the same reason Wasps admire Microsoft. Guys who “coulda been contenders” always identify with guys of the same ethnic persuasion who got to the top of the heap – no matter how ugly the heap may be. The Mafia has been around longer than Microsoft, but the parallels between the two corporations are there. Both are winning, efficient organizations that are merciless with their competition. Bill Gates crushes competitors economically and leaves them the walking dead. IndependentAd_July12_Vert.pdf 1 The Mafia, on the other hand, goes

that little extra step and actually whacks its competitors and leaves them the very dead – wedged in the trunks of cars. Both organizations have had to put up with government interference. Both will prevail. Bill Gates and his executives have had to duke it out with the government and then paid a few billion-dollar fines and went on their way. The wise guys have done their stretch in the slammer and come back to the old neighborhood the better for it. So the Mafia doesn’t have a web site and isn’t listed on NASDAQ. Big deal! The Mafia had something that Microsoft will never have – its own television show, and everybody loved it: “The Sopranos.” They had the best movies ever made: The Godfather I & II. “The Sopranos” did for Italians what “The Goldbergs” did for Jews and “I 4:33 Remember Mama” did for the 7/27/12 PM Norwegians. The Italian scene – it’s never what people think it is. tations of the .1 percent who belong to the Mafia. For honest Italians this grudging admiration comes to them with a certain amount of paranoia. Here’s how it worked out for me: Many years ago my advertising agency received a call from a large corporation telling us they were interested in our handling their advertising account. I checked into the company and found the chairman was Italian and from my old neighborhood in the Avenue U section of Brooklyn. “Nothing doing,” I told my staff. “If he comes from my old neighborhood, he’s got to be connected and I’m not going to deal with anyone who is connected to the Mafia.” My associates persisted. “You’re not being fair,” they said. “Okay, let’s investigate this guy before we take his account.” So we hired a private detective to

tell us all about the company chairman. The report came back: “He’s clean. An upstanding member of the community. Straight as they come.” So we took the account. We did a lot of good work for the company and both our firms prospered. One day the chairman invited me out to his home in Greenwich, Connecticut for dinner. We talked about the old days in Brooklyn. He was older than I was and I got up the nerve to say, “You know, when you wanted to hire us, I knew you were from the old neighborhood and I had you investigated.” He looked at me and laughed. “You jerk,” he said. “What do you think I did before we called you?” We spent the night laughing about the Mafia. President Barack Obama Versus Mitt Romney

The Independent is wrongly perceived to be a Republican newspaper because our majority owner, Jerry Della Femina, is a nationally known ardent Republican and he frequently espouses his views in his column, Jerry’s Ink. People are surprised to learn, though, that Della Femina never imposes his view in this space. He has never even suggested we endorse a certain candidate, he has never asked who we planned on endorsing, and he has never commented about

our endorsements. There have been more than a few that likely surprised him, some that probably angered him, and some he probably approved of. As publisher he could rightly command this spot for his own; he never has, and has never expressed a desire to do so. This year we are blessed to have two Ivy League-educated candidates running for the U.S. presidency. Both are brilliant men. Barack Obama came to Washington D.C. four years ago

during a financial crisis that was not his doing, but he made a series of mistakes that compounded the problem. Faced with a potentially devastating financial meltdown, he turned to his financial advisors – primarily Goldman Sachs alumni – for a quick solution. The TARP bailout, based on a threepage proposal hastily put together by the White House, poured $500 billion into the hands of the banks that helped cause the financial crisis to begin with. Virtually no

money went towards the millions of Americans facing foreclosure – by running the bailout money through them, the banks would have gotten the money anyway and homes and families would have been saved. Not surprisingly, those who benefited most were Goldman Sachs alumni, many of whom had management positions in the banks that benefited most. The hope -- the assumption -- was the banks would use the funds to allow small businesses to borrow again, and would-be homeowners to get mortgages. Instead, the banks did neither; much of the money went overseas to foreign financial institutions caught in the meltdown. As a result, the Obama plan to cut the deficit never materialized – it jumped from $10 trillion to $16 trillion on his watch. He based his presidency on the promise his plan would succeed, and it didn’t. His program to create jobs didn’t pan out, either, costing over $200,000 for every job created. The administration made massive infusions of cash to start up alternate energy companies that was wasted; in too many instances the companies are gone and the money vanished. In some cases, executives from those companies were Obama campaign contributors, supporters, or lobbied the president for money. Obama personally killed the one sure way of reducing our reliance of foreign oil and creating domestic jobs, the Keystone Pipeline. His promise to reduce unemployed to 5.4 percent was not kept – it hovers around 8 percent, and many more Americans have been out of work so long they aren’t included in the statistic anymore. The president promised to address the illegal immigration problem in his first year and did nothing until his last, when he proposed his Dream Act, an obvious attempt to secure votes that is basically a call for amnesty for many illegal immigrants, even ones guilty of committing multiple crimes here. Both men are fathers and husbands with wonderful families. Mitt Romney has been lambasted for his religious views – he’s a practicing Mormon – but Obama worshipped at Trinity Union Church Of Christ for nearly two decades, listening to Jeremiah Wright’s anti-Israel, anti-white, and antiAmerican rants without once criticizing the pastor – until the media exposed him. Mitt Romney has been labeled anti-woman yet he surrounded Continued on Page 30.

Bridget Fleming Versus Ken LaValle

S e n a t o r K e n L a Va l l e h a s represented this district in Albany for 36 years. No one can deny he knows his way around and has achieved a level of power there. He often works in tandem with our Assemblyman, Fred Thiele, cosponsoring legislation. We h a v e s u s p e c t e d t h a t oftentimes he mails it in, however. And his sojourns to the East End are infrequent. He navigated through the Bruno/Silver years, which may be indicative of his willingness to play ball -- for years New York was labeled the most dysfunctional state government in the country. LaValle has seldom been tested, his machine so formidable that potential foes usually can’t raise enough funds to mount a successful challenge. We believe he has become complacent over the years, but all that has changed. This election is more about LaValle’s opponent, Southampton To w n Coun c il wom a n B ri d g e t Fleming. We have always been unabashed supporters of Fleming, and for good reason – she works tirelessly, she’s intelligent, and she gets things done. The only thing she doesn’t do well is promote herself -- while LaValle has a PR machine constantly churning, we oftentimes find out about Flemings’ accomplishments second hand, not from the candidate herself. She’s the rare public servant who is quietly effective, but as anyone who has witnessed her debates knows, her fire and passion burn deeply, and she achieves what she sets out to accomplish. It’s been a long time since we’ve

had a female from these parts in Albany, and it’s time to change that. It’s not a knock on LaValle, but Fleming has emerged as the superior candidate in the course of this campaign. During their debates Fleming has repeatedly called the senator out on the amount of public funds he spends to promote himself, and despite his denials she

backs it up with facts available on her website. LaValle has countered by spending far more than his challenger, which is probably indicative that he knows he’s in a fight to the finish this time. Maybe LaValle is too entrenched, and Fleming’s bid to unseat him will fall short. Either way, though, she comes out a winner, because

after a hard fought campaign the shine is off the incumbent, and either Fleming or someone else will be waiting in the wings for him should he opt to run again in two years. Should Fleming come up short this time, we’re pretty confident it’s the last election she’ll ever lose. The Independent endorses Bridget Fleming for State Senate.

Tim Bishop Versus Randy Altschuler

We believed Congressman Tim Bishop to be an honest, hard working public servant, and endorsed him three straight times. We wanted very much to believe he was an environmentalist, a tireless worker, someone who would deliver for his constituents here on the East End. We cast him in the same mold as Fred Thiele, Jay Schneiderman, Ken LaValle and the like, someone who wouldn’t allow party or politics to get in the way of getting the job done. He played the part well. Recent events have forced us to take a harder look. He may well be the subject of a House Ethics probe after Politico reported he tied a request for a favor from a constituent with a campaign

contribution, which D.C. insiders said was clearly an ethics violation. For a 10-year incumbent to pretend otherwise is disingenuous. It’s what transpired in the days following the Politico story that casts a pall over Bishop’s reputation but more important, his fitness to hold public office. Eric Semler asked Bishop to expedite the process for obtaining a fireworks permit. After the story broke Semler was quoted as saying, “I didn’t know he was running for reelection; after the fact, after I got the permit, I did receive a request for a donation.” What Semler didn’t know was Politico was in possession of an email Molly Bishop, the congressman’s daughter, sent to Semler just two

days after he contacted Bishop – informing Semler her father was in a tough election race and suggesting the maximum allowable donation. The e-mail was sent to him before Bishop helped secure the permit, which was pushed through despite a piping plover nest just yards from where the fireworks were ignited. We later uncovered that Semler did business with Robert X. Sillerman, Bishop’s so called “rabbi,” top campaign contributor, and friend who paid the college tuitions for both of Bishop’s daughters. It’s possible Bishop didn’t think he was doing anything wrong. But the Tim Bishop we thought we knew would have moved aggressively to clear his name – not take part in

a cover-up. (Sillerman, by the way, refused a request for comment.) Bishop funneled $600,000 of campaign contributions to his daughter Molly, a trend he began at Southampton College, where he hired 10 relatives even while the college accumulated $30 million in debt. Sillerman, perhaps not coincidentally, served as chancellor at the college. An independent, non-partisan, Washington D.C. based watchdog group labeled Bishop “one of the most corrupt members of Congress.” That’s a serious charge. Rather than tackle the charge head-on Bishop bristles when the matter is brought up, stating his family is off limits during the election campaign. The truth is, his family – especially his daughter – has become a campaign issue, and the congressman has only himself to blame. Bishop has run a 100 percent negative campaign against his o p p o n e n t , R a n d y A l t s c h u l e r, hammering the “outsourcing” issue because he knows the loss of American jobs is a hot button. But he can’t explain away the 40,000 jobs Long Island has lost on his watch, nor the billions of dollars of bailout money that found its way overseas. One would assume a 10year incumbent would campaign on his accomplishments, but they have been few and far between. He has not authored a single piece of legislation that became law – in 10 years! Instead of taking actions that would help his constituents, Bishop has been a predictable lackey for the Obama administration. He votes for his party’s initiatives almost all the time, including Obamacare, despite originally promising constituents he wouldn’t. Randy Altschuler was a champion of outsourcing a decade ago, when he co-founded OfficeTiger -- we get that. He also created 750 U.S. jobs, by the way. He is by no means the perfect candidate. He doesn’t have deep roots hereabouts, as Bishop does. That in itself doesn’t mean he won’t do an effective job in Washington, though – Robert F. Kennedy and Hillary Clinton choose to make New York their home before running for public office, and they served us well. Altschuler is extremely smart, well educated and sincere. He isn’t beholden to anyone, and will be in the majority party of the House of Representatives should he win. He has worked hard to become a success in the private sector, and Continued on Page 30.

Despite the contentious relations between Supervisor Bill Wilkinson and members of his board, since he submitted his spending plan to colleagues for revision at the end of September, few substantive changes have been made. recognized their responsibility for meeting the needs of people with disabilities. He was less pleased with the consensus decision regarding the town’s scavenger waste plant. During the last budget cycle, Wilkinson included just three months’ worth of funding for the operation of the plant, a town asset he hoped to sell. Once new board members Sylvia Overby and Peter Van Scoyoc joined the body, however, the privatization plan stalled in the face of myriad questions they raised. The operating fund for the plant hit deficit mode. This go round, the supervisor made the same proposal, submitted a budget that called for just three months’ worth of funding for operation. Stanzione said he “argued strenuously” to remove the budget lines altogether and close the plant until a final decision about its future can be made. That was a also a recommendation made by the town’s Budget and Finance Advisory Committee, he pointed out. Overby and Van Scoyoc felt the timeframe was too brief, given a spoken desire to conduct an indepth analysis of the site and craft a town wide wastewater management plan. (The ETA for the plan is next June.) Critical elements related to the plant have yet to be included in the budget, Stanzione observed this week. For one, funding for the wastewater management plan, some $250,000, has not been included. Board members did however, agreed to borrow the money to conduct a long-needed extensive cleaning of storage tanks at the facility. According to Budget Officer Len Bernard, capitalizing the tank cleaning has resulted in a lower budget for the year at $793,950 with no change in the tax levy for the line. Overall spending is actually up by 4.99 percent as opposed to up by 5.03 percent as originally proposed, he said. The board was slated to hold a special work session to continue discussing the budget in advance of the hearing on Tuesday. As of press time, it was uncertain whether Hurricane Sandy would blow the work session out. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

East End Braces For Mammoth Storm By Rick Murphy

Many weather observers thought we would never see another weather system the likes of The Perfect Storm of 1991, but as of Sunday another mammoth storm is bearing down on the East End. Some prognosticators at the U.S. Weather Service are saying it may be the most severe in history. The fluke convergence of three separate and distinct weather systems is responsible. Hurricane Sandy, a killer (40 deaths so far) having devastated several Caribbean islands is churning up the Atlantic. Normally, the typical path this time of year would lead it out to sea, but a

high-pressure system in Greenland is pushing it towards the U.S. Coast. Meanwhile, another storm from the northwest is pulling it inland. The resulting hybrid, part hurricane, part Nor’easter, will likely affect two-thirds of the country, the Weather Channel predicted Sunday. “It’s almost like a cyclone,” said Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst. “It’s a hurricane and a Nor’easter, and a full moon.” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone declared a state of emergency Saturday morning and ordered a mandatory evacuation of Fire Island. The most important thing is booze, of course, and I have lots of wine in the basement, so even if we are trapped down there for an extended period, it will be cool. Karen worries about this stuff more than I do. “What are we going to do if that tree in the front yard goes through the roof?” she asked. That morphs into a soliloquy about how she’s been after me to trim the branches for 18 years and I never did, like I’m really going to climb up on the roof anytime in my lifetime. It wasn’t until I realized that Frankenstorm could impact several

NFL games that I began to seriously consider worrying about it. So during halftime of the Giants’ game I surveyed the situation: There’s plenty of frozen food: sauce, meatballs, chicken soup, and that sort of thing. But we have an electric stove, and the last big storm we were out of electricity for 10 days. So I bought a couple bags of charcoal. Then Karen informed me that the raging wind and rain would preclude any possibility of getting the grill going. Hmmm . . . what tastes good cold? Beef jerky, yeah, that’s the ticket. I bought a box, and then I remembered beef jerky gives me the runs, and we won’t have any running water. That’s not a good combo. There’s something about staring into the face of a huge storm, about

the inherent and ongoing battle of man against nature. We’ll persevere, I told Karen. I’ll chop some wood (note to self: buy hatchet), make a fire, and cook in the living room, I said. But Karen pointed out the last time I made a fire I forgot to open the flue and three of our four parakeets died. “We survived Hurricane Irene, and we’ll survive Frankenfurter,” I proclaimed. Actually, we survived Irene by staying at Gurney’s Inn, but that’s beside the point. The truth is, as I write this the storm in still out at sea, but it’s beginning to be a source of concern – not enough to do any actually work to prepare for it, mind you, but at least we should take precautions: While I watch the games Karen should go out and get pork and beans . . . pickles . . . hot peppers stuffed with prosciutto (I just really like them) . . . Entenmann’s, specifically the chocolate donuts, the coffee cake, and the Danish ring. I also love Swanson’s Hungry Man turkey dinners, and I figure even if we don’t have electricity we can put them under a hot light until that stuff they say is stuffing warms up. And don’t forget they come with that nifty little red cranberry dessert thing. About 10 years ago we faced a big storm, I forget the name. The lights went out about 7 PM. I called Peconic Coast Grill, and sure enough they were grilling steaks and eating by candlelight. “Let’s get over there now before they run out,” I pleaded. “No, I have to go to the supermarket.” An hour later Karen came back with 20 gallon bottles of water and every battery in the place. She also had -- and I’m not making

this up --about 12 cans of tuna at $3.49 a pop. You have to understand Karen doesn’t get to the market much. Sure, tuna would be a sensible thing to buy for emergencies, but as I pointed out to her, no one buys LIGHT tuna packed in oil, especially at that price. I tried to explain to her what chunk white packed in water was, but she looked at me with that dazed look in her eye. “We have plenty of Poland Spring at home, so why are we buying all this water?” “To pour down the toilets,” she said. She neglected to realize we had a swimming pool, which perhaps coincidentally was, you guess it, filled with water. “What kind of batteries did you get?” I asked. “Aren’t they all the same?” she replied. Finally I convinced her if we didn’t go the restaurant right away I would die, because I’d rather die that eat that oily smelly tuna. We got to Peconic Coast Grill about 9 PM. “I’m sorry, we just ran out of steaks. We’re about the shut down so the chefs gave what was left to the dogs.” I’m not making this up — we actually did a story of how the chefs went from car to car in the parking lot feeding the dogs the patrons had brought with them because they didn’t want to leave some little spoiled Shitsui home in the darky-warky. In other words, some snippy little mutt got a shell steak God had intended for me. That night I sulked while eating cold leftover meatloaf with a little fungus on the side. Then I opened up a bottle of 1992 Chateau BraneCantenac and things didn’t seem so bad after all. See you on the other side.

work in September causing the U.S. unemployment rate to dip to 7.8 percent. The unemployment rate has hovered over 8 percent during Obama’s entire term up until last month. The president promised a 5.6 percent unemployment rate by this time in his administration. The growth of the U.S. population requires the creation of 150,000 to 200,000 jobs per month to hold unemployment steady. In September only 114,000 jobs were created, which means we continue to fall behind in creating jobs. At the current rate of job creation, we might not hit full employment (4 percent unemployment) for at least another four years if we are mired in another Obama administration. The current administration has done a terrible job with the economy. We have 23 million Americans underemployed/ unemployed, and only 58 percent of the

working-age population is currently employed compared to 63 percent in 2008 before Obama became president. Americans on food stamps have increased by 15 million in the past four years. And the national debt has gone from $10 trillion to $16 trillion under Obama. We are in worse shape now than we were when Obama took office, and we cannot afford to continue these failed economic policies. DONALD A. MOSKOWITZ

Abuse Growing To the Editor, Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem on Long Island and across the country. In 2011, there were nearly 350 fatal overdoses in Nassau and Suffolk County. This growing epidemic puts an enor-

mous burden on our social services agencies and health care facilities – resulting in more than one million emergency room visits nationwide each year. Moreover, costs relating to prescription drug abuse amount to more than $72 billion for health insurers each year. It is clear that prescription drug abuse has become an enormous drain on our local and country’s resources. Drug dealers and those who enable drug dealers have found a way to “game the system,” avoiding detection from existing safeguards that monitor many controlled substances. Currently, 93 percent of all prescription drug purchases are tracked and recorded. Yet the remaining seven percent of purchases slip through the cracks, processed as “self-pay” claims. Many of these drugs are falling into dangerous hands and putting our communities – neighbors, colleagues, families and children – at great risk. Continued on page 16.

What do you remember about the first date you ever went on? Mary Ann Sarris It was a double date my cousin arranged. We went to a drive in movie. I was so scared that it took me hours to get dressed. But once we got to the drive-in we had a wonderful time. After that I was on a roll! I had all kinds of confidence from just that one date.

Preventing prescription drug abuse is not a partisan issue. We must come together to address the serious issue of prescription drug abuse, and close the “cash-pay” loophole that exists in prescription drug law nationwide. KAREN BOORSHTEIN

Janet Mancino I really didn’t date much when I was younger. I was very busy with school. So pretty much my first date was with my husband. We went to the beach, since we met in Puerto Rico. We had a great time that day. We went swimming and snorkeling.

How Absurd Dear Editor, I returned from vacation and was disappointed to learn about the allegations of misconduct and incompetence against Linda Norris of the East Hampton Adult Day Care Center. How did these allegations come to be? I am a volunteer at the day care center and have witnessed on many occasions the devotion, love and concern Linda has for the elderly. When Linda interviewed me for a volunteer position at East Hampton Adult Day Center, I saw in her someone who had the utmost compassion for the elderly. Linda had tears in her eyes when she was telling me how she felt when meeting the families of the elderly and to inform them that at the present time there were no openings at the facility. My mother had Alzheimer’s disease and had to be placed in a nursing home; I would have considered myself fortunate to have Linda there for her. This is a woman who went to India to volunteer at an orphanage; and now she is being suspended for allegations of being incompetent and

I do know that sometimes those of us who are fortunate in life need to use that good fortune to help bring justice for someone who no longer has the voice. I hope each of us in the community will show solace and support in whatever way we can. I hope the reward will motivate the person who may know something to say something. Although I didn’t know Mr. Judge personally, I am doing this because his story and the words of his friends touched me. He was a member of my community. He has no voice as the victim.

Hit And Run Case Continues

By Kitty Merrill

Private security cameras and forensic analysis of evidence collected at the scene may provide the information East Hampton Town Police need to capture the hit and run driver who killed John Judge, 61, last week. Investigators and emergency service personnel were called to Main Street, Amagansett at about eight on the evening of October 23. East Hampton Town Councilman Dominick Stanzione has stopped at Astro Pizza to pick up dinner when he noticed what he said looked like “a pile of leaves wrapped in a blanket,” or one of the scarecrows that were decorating Main Street

on the eastbound shoulder of the road near a parked car. “Whatever it was,” Stanzione said this week, “It was in a place it didn’t belong.” The councilman decided to get a closer look and crossed Main Street, which was, he recalled, “ridiculously dark.” At first Stanzione couldn’t tell who the victim was. Although he described Judge as a long-term acquaintance he saw ‘every day without fail,” Stanzione said the victim’s shirt was pulled up over his face and his arm was contorted. It looked like he’d been hit on the side and his arm swung up over his face with the impact. A driver for the Amagansett

ambulance, Stanzione rushed across to the pizzeria and told proprietor Tony Lupo to call 911. “The first thing he said was “Is it John?” Stanzione said. Judge, who lived across the street, had just left the shop minutes earlier. AS the investigation progressed, b y F r i d a y, S u f f o l k C o u n t y CRIMESTOPPERS offered a $5000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Another resident added a $5000 reward of his own to the kitty. Concurrently, some hamlet residents complained that lighting along Main Street wasn’t bright enough. “The lighting is obviously insufficient,” Stanzione said, “But I don’t want to give a hit and run guy any excuse.” Detective Lieutenant Chris Anderson declined to detail specifics relating to how the case was being pursued. He affirmed, however, that viewing security tapes and using such physical evidence as small pieces of a car to identify its make and model “are approaches we do use in all investigations of this type.” He said that if county crime lab techs are able to discern distinct information about the car, police will get the word out to the public quickly. So far the vehicle has been described as having dark colored metallic, possibly blue, paint. Although the vehicle has been

described as having significant frontend damage, Anderson said other parts of the vehicle might have sustained damage as well. There is a “high probability” there was front-end damage to the vehicle, but there could also be damage to the passenger front quarter panel or a wraparound headlight. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have a huge vehicle database, which Anderson said, “Might come into play.” Anderson said police were uncertain which direction the car was travelling. Andrew Cuomo also declared a state of emergency, calling the upcoming weather event “a super storm.” LIPA officials are warning that customers could lose power for a week or more. In East Hampton Town, boat owners were notified that all boats must be removed from town docks and marinas by Monday. Anna Throne-Holst ordered a

mandatory evacuation of Dune Road Sunday morning, and police and fire personnel went up and down the road Sunday to make sure. “We already had flooding on West Dune Road (Hampton Bays) just from the high tide,“ said Southampton Town Highway Supervisor Alex Gregor. He said crews have been out since 6 AM Sunday securing job sites. “We sent employees home with plow trucks and chain saws in case they need to clear out their driveways to get to work.”

Southampton could be impacted on the south and on the north. “Any of the low lying areas south of Montauk Highway. But depending on the tract the Peconics could produce flooding,” Gregor said. East Hampton Town Supervisor was also preparing for the worst Sunday. “I’m worried about Soundview, I’m worried about downtown Montauk, and depending on if the storm turns, Napeague,” he said. An evacuation of Gerard Drive was a possibility

as The Independent went to press. “I’m very, very worried about erosion,” said Throne-Holst. “This thing is going to be with us for 36 hours. Consider Irene was with us for eight to nine hours.” The North Fork is also in danger of major flooding. Officials said the Long Island Sound is expected to rise considerably, especially during high tide and a full moon on Monday night. The National Weather Service warned of “life threatening storm surges for both the Sound and the Atlantic.” Southold Town Super visor warned residents of low lying areas to seek shelter and declared a state of emergency Sunday. Mattituck, Southold, and Greenport high schools will all serve as shelters until the storm passes. The Red Cross announced it was opening a shelter at the Hampton Bays High School on 88 Argonne Avenue. Riverhead Town officials were meeting Sunday to decide whether to open the high school as a shelter. Home Depot in Tanger Mall was ordered to take down an outdoor tent it had erected for a sale event. In the wake of Hurricane Irene and the subsequent widespread power outages East End officials are worried that electricity will be lost for an extended period. “I’m worried about the power,” Wilkinson acknowledged. “We keep an alert list of seniors who may be threatened.” “Based on the severity and current tract of the storm we urge customers to prepare and plan for power outages that could last as much as 7 to 10 days,” read a statement posted on the LIPA website. “While not all customers will see restoration crews working specifically in their neighborhoods following the storm, crews will perform damage surveys as soon as possible during and after the storm and following established safety guidelines.” “They’ve been great,” said ThroneHolst about LIPA. “We’ve had several meetings. I think they learned a lot from Irene.” But, she acknowledged, if the storm is severe enough there is no way to prevent outages. “Stay home,” Gregor warned. “If you need help call.”

Play Bridge After South saw dummy, he noted that he would lose a club and one or two hearts. As a result he needed to find a way of losing only one heart. That could be accomplished if he could force West to lead a heart. He also knew that West could be thrown on lead with the jack of clubs. South won the first trick, cashed the king of spades and drew the two outstanding trumps. Next came the crucial lead of the ace of spades on which he threw a small club. Next he trumped a small spade. Finally, he led the jack of clubs, which West had to win. West now had no good lead. If he led a club, South could trump in dummy, discarding a heart from his hand. If West led a heart, South’s king becomes a winner. In either case

The fact is, Romney was a sensational governor, provided scholarships for ever y single graduating senior that did well on the SAT exams; and he started the program, though Obama insisted during the third debate that it preceded Romney. At Bain Capital, and later as the head of the U.S. Olympic Committee, Romney proved he could raise funds, manage people, and multitask. Obama, on the other hand, never held a management position in his life until he was elected president. President Barack Obama is a dynamic presence and his election marked a long overdue milestone for this country. He is and will continue to be an American icon, and his future is bright. That aside, though, he did not keep the promises he made to the people of this country. Frankly, his lack of high-level executive experience became more obvious as time wore on. We need people who know how to make money in Washington. What we have are people who only know how to spend it.

his business acumen – and Bishop’s lack thereof – is essential if we are to rebuild the Suffolk County job environment. Altschuler’s anti-abortion stance is troubling for us, but we must keep it in context of the bigger picture when choosing between the two candidates. Tim Bishop knows that ultimately the House Board of Ethics will level a slap on the wrist at best – witness the Charlie Rangel fiasco – and then he will glibly minimize the whole sordid affair and go on playing the role we so desperately want him to fill. But the stench will remain and the charge of corruption will linger. Our loyalty to him is measured by what he’s done for us during his lengthy stay in Washington, and the answer is: not nearly enough to warrant another term. We d e s e r v e b e t t e r. Psychiatry Practice Expands Douglas K. Hoverkamp, MD, announced the expansion of his outpatient psychiatry practice and the arrival of new associate, Letty Smith, MD. Located at the Medical Village in Greenport, these physicians are one of the few psychiatry practice providers east of Riverhead. “The goal of the practice is to encourage patients to resume a daily routine and help them assimilate back into the community. Many times, we can guide patients through treatment and improve debilitating symptoms by adjusting medications or introducing new ones,” Hoverkamp said. “If patients need to be admitted, Eastern Long Island Hospital is close by, providing a healing and therapeutic environment,” he added. “We are very pleased that Dr. Hoverkamp is offering outpatient psychiatric counseling to the residents of the North Fork and Shelter Island,” Paul J. Officer of Eastern Long Island Hospital, said. “Often, people postpone getting the care they need because of the stigma associated with mental illness. As with all illnesses, the earlier a problem is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome.” Dr. Hoverkamp is board certified and holds a Medical Degree from St. George’s University. MEDICARE ELIGIBLE? What does it cover? What supplements are available? Finding it confusing?

The charter catamaran Mon Tiki launched at Montauk Marine Basin last week. Built entirely on the East End using local craftsmen, Mon Tiki is constructed entirely of sustainably sourced wood. According to Captain David Ryan, materials used in construction include Meranti (aka”Philippine Mahogany”) from Malasya, and Douglas Fir from Oregon. Of special note in her construction are her twin 33-foot hollow Douglas fir masts. All woodwork is joined and encapsulated in aircraft grade epoxy resin. The launch occurred 10 months after the first delivery of materials in December of 2011. Following the launch, Ryan reported, “The slipway is 22 feet wide and Mon Tiki is 21 feet wide, so we just barely fit. I think Mon Tiki is the widest boat ever launched there.” The next couple of months will be devoted to further outfitting, sail-handling arrangements, and the completion of the US Coast Guard certification process, Ryan informed. “As weather allows we’ll be doing limited winter tours and will begin full operation in the spring of 2013,” Ryan announced. In the meantime, Mon Tiki will winter in Diamond Cove Marina in Montauk. K.M.
