SEX ON THE COUCH

We have four more years of Obama . . . taxes and unemployment are going up . . . sadly, some people are still suffering the ravages of Sandy . . . I just know there must be something to be thankful for. How about if you’re reading this it means you’re still alive, and that’s something to be thankful for. Plus you’re still living in a great country no matter who is running or ruining it. If you’re one of the 58,167,260 Republicans who voted for Romney, you need something more to cheer you up. I searched my files and found this old sweet column from when this story was all over the news. It should make everyone feel warm and wonderful. Happy Thanksgiving. Admit it. Even before you saw this silly column you rushed to read all about Diane DeMartini-Scully, the East Hampton middle school psychologist and her alleged seduction of a 16-year-old boy. I don’t blame you. Frankly, I’m obsessed with this story, too.

Why? Because it’s still shocking to read about older women lusting after 16-year-old boys. And when the older woman in question turns out to be a shrink, let me tell you that makes for one “hot” story. It’s the kind of story people read and then tell everyone about, but usually start by saying, “Isn’t it disgusting . . .” Not so fast. First of all, the boy was not her patient, he was her daughter’s boyfriend. She’s 45 and she stole her 16-year-old daughter’s boyfriend? Doesn’t it make you wonder what the Thanksgiving Day meal is going to be like in the DeMartini-Scully household? “Pass the cranberries please.” “Mommy, you sick bitch, you stole my boyfriend.” “And just how does that make you feel?” “Diane, our daughter is right, you are a sick bitch.” “So, John, perhaps you can tell us all how this is making you feel?”

HAS YOUR HEATING, HOT WATER OR WELL SYSTEM EQUIPMENT BEEN EXPOSED TO WATER? Heating, Ventilation and Cooling (HVAC) equipment, such as a furnace, boiler or hot water heater, can be damaged extensively if it is exposed to water. The amount of damage will depend partly on the exposure and the amount of time the equipment remains under water. Often, the damage is so great that the only solution is replacement. This would be the time to consider energy efficient, cost saving, upgraded equipment.

“I hate you. You’re disgusting.” “And so you both feel that the best way to describe how you feel about me is to hold back on the cranberry sauce?” “This is not about cranberry sauce. You don’t seem to understand you have ruined our lives. You have ruined this boy’s life. We hate you. We hate you. Now what have you got to say about that?” “Interesting. Now how would you both feel if I asked you to pass the mashed potatoes?” I’m not defending the sex shrink, but I will make this point. Just about every man who has gone to see an attractive female shrink has, at one point in the process, fantasized about having sex with his shrink. The same is true with women who have spent any time with an attractive male shrink. I’m sure that shrinks, when they go to shrink conventions, talk about this stuff all the time. There is a shrink joke that I can’t for the life of me remember, but I remember the punch line where the shrink says: “Don’t be silly. I shouldn’t even be lying next to you on this couch.” The fancy phrase that is used to describe this process is “erotic transference.”

IN THE NEWS

Let me translate “erotic transference” for you. It means, “Gosh, I’ve told this person more intimate things about myself than anyone else in the world, so wouldn’t it be nifty if we went to bed.” I can’t speak for shrinks, but I would guess they suffer from erotic transference, too. Wouldn’t you think that sooner or later they’d sit there and say, “Gosh, this person has told me more intimate things about themselves than they’ve told anyone else in the world. I wonder what it would be like to go to bed with him (or her).” I know there are many people who will read this column and say to themselves, “What a sick puppy this Della Femina guy is.” All I can tell you is that if enough of you write me about this, I will have to seek professional help to cure myself of these warped opinions. Perhaps I will have to consult a shrink. I would bet Diane DeMartiniScully will have plenty of openings in her schedule. I know . . . I know . . . She’s too young for me. Hmmmmm. Community Members Donate To Sandy Victims

Indy office manager Jillian Griffiths and I took a trip to the Rockaways on Sunday to deliver much needed supplies to an area that was extremely hard hit by Super Storm Sandy. Leading up to our trip we request-

ed information from the East End Cares group Facebook page to determine what supplies were needed most by hurricane victims. We then reached out to the community with a request for donations. Those items include cleaning supplies, baby

formula and diapers, toiletries, pet supplies, and hot and non-perishable foods. The community support was exemplary, and our office was flooded with gifts of all the above. We happily loaded the Independent delivery van with these supplies, which also included 200 fresh bagels from Twice Upon A Bagel in Wainscott and 100 turkey and cheese sandwiches made by Indy’s Chef Joe Cipro with bread donated by The Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton. As we approached the Rockaways, the destruction is unfathomable. Cars are abandoned. A sign in the Broad Channel area reads “FEMA Please Help.” Boats are strewn along the roadways, as if they were flung across the street by a super villian. You’ve seen the harrowing images on social media sites and on the news. It is as bad as it looks. So many homes have been left in a mess of electrical, plumbing and structural damage due to Sandy’s surging seas and high winds. The residents are hungry and they don’t have enough of the supplies that they desperately need. People walk the streets in masks to avoid airborne toxins. As we arrived at St. Francis de Sales Parish in Belle Harbor to deliver our goods, grateful volunteers greeted us. They couldn’t emphasize enough the need for these supplies. As they graciously unloaded our van, they told us they hope we can come back soon. I told them The Independent would be back once we could fill the van again with donations. The scene at St. Francis is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. There is a strong government presence. Military and NYPD patrol the streets offering protection and guidance. There are volunteers all around, working together. Volunteer jobs are available for everyone who wants to help. Thousands of people wait in line for food and supplies. Food trucks - including the Montauk based Montaco - line the streets by St. Francis giving away free hot meals. Many are paid for by the NYC Mayor’s Fund. No one is greedy and everyone is patient. The smell of burned buildings

fills the air, but hope is not lost among the community. The spirit of the people is positive and everyone is working together towards the goal of rebuilding. Once the wreck is cleaned up, they will rebuild their neighborhood. A flag is flown proudly above brick rubble that was once home to a New York City Firefighter. Down the block, the awning of the Harbor Light Pub is all that remains standing. On the ocean, houses have collapsed. It resembles a war zone. There have been so many East End residents who have volunteered to help the relief effort. I spoke with East Hampton resident Linda Shapiro who grew up in Bayswater, a waterside community in Far Rockaway. Shapiro coordinated a mission to bring pet food and litter to the Animal Hospital of the Rockaways, along with Andy Sabin, the President of the South Fork Natural History Museum. Dr. Ira Rogoff and his wife Phillis, owners of the animal hospital, not only had severe damage to the hospital but they have been living at the JFK Hilton Airport hotel since their Belle Harbor home was under eight feet of water. “The animal hospital has lost over $200,000 worth of new equipment. It is going to take a lot of work and fundraising, as the equipment was not insured. But their spirit is uplifting. They said that I brought them luck because, just prior to our arriving, they got their lights back! They are grateful for every little step forward toward restoring normalcy,” said Shapiro. “We could not unload quickly enough,” said Shapiro of the delivery. “People were desperate for the food and litter. I called them the following morning and what we had delivered was already depleted. We plan on dropping another shipment early next week.” For this week’s Continued on Page 27.

Covering Sandy’s Costs By Kitty Merrill

It could cost over $2 million to repair damage wrought to town roads and buildings by Super Storm Sandy. Last Thursday night, the East Hampton Town Board voted to authorize borrowing money to pay for the restoration in two separate measures. Members agreed to borrow up to $750,000 to pay for improvements and repair of buildings, and $1.5 million to cover the cost of road repairs. As of press time, a complete list of damages and the estimated costs of repair was not available. Budget Officer Len Bernard said repairs to Gerard Drive alone are expected to top $1 million, while

even smaller projects, like the staircase at Culloden Point comes with a $52,000 price tag. The list is still in flux, but on Friday Bernard was able to detail other costs including $100,000 in damage to the aquaculture facility in Montauk, $10,000 in damage to a hangar at the airport, $75,000 in bulkhead damage at the town dock at Three Mile Harbor, and $20,000 for road sign replacement. In addition to Gerard Drive, repairing road ends damaged by over-wash will cost an estimated $100,000, with West Lake Drive carrying its own cost of an additional $75,000. The Star Island causeway will cost an estimated $45,000 to

fix and another $36,000 will be necessary to clean up the road end at Marine Boulevard in Amagansett. According to the bond resolutions, any grant funds or reimbursement from the feds or state will be applied to the cost of projects or redemption of the bonds. Additionally, Bernard said the town could get reimbursement from

FEMA for staffing costs, so far tallied at close to $900,000 for debris and tree removal alone. (Costs for police overtime were not available at press time.) Bernard reported receiving federal reimbursements related to Hurricane Irene as recently as a month or two ago. He said 18 months to two years is a “reasonable” time frame to expect Sandy money. Also last Thursday night, Sandy continued to be a hot topic, as Kathy Cunningham urged the board to develop “a better sense of what your plans are” with regard to storm response. “We are one extended power outage from total chaos,” she opined. Cunningham spoke specifically to the use of the Montauk Playhouse as a shelter, wondering what happened. Supervisor Bill Wilkinson explained that while town officials expected to make use of the space, they heard at the last minute that the Red Cross would only be able to staff one shelter in East Hampton Town. “It wasn’t the case that we weren’t ready to go in Montauk; we weren’t ready to go without the Red Cross,” he said. The supervisor reported that he asked the fire department’s ladies auxiliary if they could staff the shelter in Montauk, but didn’t get a green light. Overall, he said, “You learn from every one of these [storms]. We did a lot of things better than last time.” Continuing with the storm cost theme, the board voted on a measure that will ease expenses for homeowners. The town recycling center will accept storm related brush, for free, this weekend and next. Finally on the Sandy front, Wi l k i n s o n a n n o u n c e d s t a t e , national and county departments of labor have offered the town grants to hire workers to help with storm-related clean up. The pay is $14.89 per hour for a 35-hour week, with an estimated length of the job at 12 weeks. County officials are conducting the interviews for the positions, which will be temporary under the town highway and parks departments. Call 631-853-6600 to learn more. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Salt of the Sea: Beautiful And Tragic

By Kitty Merrill

The Garbers didn’t get the fishing gene, filmmaker Tom Garber admitted sheepishly. But that did nothing to diminish the Hampton Bays resident’s love of the sea. He’s lensed 10 acclaimed documentaries with maritime themes. His latest, Salt of the Sea, was shown recently at the Montauk Movie Theater and will be screened at 12:15 PM at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor on December 1 during the Hamptons Take 2 Film Festival. Shot over the course of 18 months on a handful of independently owned and operated commercial fishing boats, including vessels out of Montauk, Shinnecock and Greenport; Salt of the Sea tells the harrow-

ing and tragic story of a vanishing breed of Americans. Using a waterproof camera attached to a long pole for some shots, Garber captured the excitement, the danger, but most of all, the beauty of life on the water. Stunning images are interspersed with footage of bureaucrats with the power to determine fishermen’s fates. Garber reports that of all the jobs in America, commercial fishermen suffer five times the death rate of any other profession. But it’s not the danger that’s killing the industry. Footage of the New England Fishery Management Council and congressional hearings on abuses of power juxtapose with magnificent sea scenes.

Some staggering stats: Thanks to catch limits imposed by the feds, 80 percent of seafood consumed in America is imported from other countries, where regulations regarding testing for toxic chemicals are much less stringent. According to an Inspector General’s report, $5.5 million in fines were assessed in the Northeast between 2004 and 2009. That’s two times higher than any other region. Some $96 million in proceeds over five years were used for travel, and the purchase of cars and luxury boats. There were $4.8 million in undocumented transactions and the chief of law enforcement supposedly had “shredding parties” to destroy documents when an investigation commenced. And, as lawmakers began to investigate the lack of controls over the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s enforcement fund, NOAA bureaucrats continued to enact limits fishermen feel are arbitrary and based on flawed science. Salt of the Sea lays out a damning case against federal officials, while still depicting the lush lure of the sea and the fishermen’s love of a lifestyle that, at present, seems doomed by government interference. “They live on the water,” Garber pointed out. “This force that comes from the ocean, it’s always there. I wanted to punctuate that against these guys sitting in board rooms and meetings.” Captain Julie Brumm arranged the showing in Montauk earlier this month. “When I saw this film I knew more people, and not just other fishermen, needed to see it to truly understand the pressure today’s commercial fishing industry is under. The public is not getting the Continued on Page 31.

RICK’S SPACE God Help Us There are two words a smoker never wants to hear: “chest X-ray.” I was doing a piece about New Year’s resolutions for our holiday book (in this issue) when I realized that until this year I had only managed to fulfill one of mine in all these years. I’m not bragging but this year I actually did all the things I vowed to do last January 1 – I lost 50 pounds, I got in shape, and I’m taking guitar lessons. I was about one for 50 as far as keeping my resolutions before this year, and that one time was 15 years ago when I quit smoking. I loved cigarettes. My idea of dealing with the health issue was to switch from Big Red to Marlboro Mediums and later to Marlboro Lights. One Christmas I got one hell of a chest cold. Naturally, I smoked my way through it, like all good smokers do. I couldn’t shake

it, though. Finally I had to go to the doctor, and that’s when I heard those dreaded words. I was in a panic as I drove to the hospital. It got worse. I ran into a nurse there – “Did you hear about Dickey? He was doing great, quit drinking, got remarried.” “Good for him,” I said glumly. “He’s dead. Had lung cancer.” I turned ashen. I made my New Year’s resolution on the spot. Actually, it was a fervent prayer. Like most nonpracticing Catholics I can be very religious when I need something. On the other hand, I can also blithely convince myself there is no God, like when I steal a piece of chocolate from a little kid. “Dear God, please don’t give me lung cancer. If you give me another chance, I’ll never smoke again.” When I went into the room for

the X-ray the technician gave me the big lead thing to hold over my chest. “What’s the point?” I asked myself. “It’s too late now.” He emerged from the other room a few minutes later carrying a big manila envelope. “Give this to your doctor,” he said. The poor bastard couldn’t even look me in the eye. As soon as I got outside I ripped it open and looked at the X-ray. “My lungs are a charcoal gray mass of Marlboro cancer!” I shrieked. I dropped the envelope off at the doctor’s office and went home and smoked. I waited by the phone — nothing. The next day — nothing. A week passed. Finally I called, believing the doctor was avoiding me so he wouldn’t have to deliver the bad news. “Do I have it? I asked meekly. “Pneumonia? No. I just wanted to make sure,” he replied. I was stunned. Pneumonia? My first thought was to try and fool God. “Yo, Big Guy. I was just pullin’ your leg about the smoking thing. We cool with that?” At that moment I swear (to God!) the sky darkened. I never smoked another butt. I get a kick out of New Year’s resolutions. Statistics show only eight percent of us actually follows through on them for more than a month. I can remember sitting at a bar at three in the morning on New Year’s when the guy next to

IN THE NEWS

me kept repeating, ”I swear to God I’m gonna stop drinking this year. I swear.” I’m like, “Dude, it is the new year already. You already blew it!” The fact is most of us are too ambitious. We make resolutions we can’t possibly achieve, probably because we are usually drunk when we say them. “I’m gonna feed all the poor people!” Yeah, good luck with that. I suggest setting the bar lower. Make resolutions that are doable. Here are a few of mine: “Try to hit the urinal (most of the time).” “Don’t fall asleep in your own vomit (except maybe on Saturday night).” “Don’t eat red meat (except beef and lamb).” The truth is, it’s all about willpower. We either come to grips with getting older or we don’t. At some point in our lives we have to rethink our game plan. I used to have a nun who gave us some sage advice. She said it was OK to talk to God like he was a real person, and it was OK to make deals with him. That’s how I quit smoking. “God, please help me finish writing this stupid column and I’ll promise not to make my entire family watch football on Thanksgiving.” (Fingers crossed.)

EDITORIAL Help Is Needed Talk about tragedy narrowly averted. As bad as it was, Sandy could have been worse. For that we give thanks. Others were less fortunate, and our hearts are with them. The Independent sent a van loaded with supplies to some of the affected areas Sunday, as so many local businesses, organizations, and individuals have. The rebuilding process has just begun. This was a catastrophe to rival the tsunami and Katrina, and thousands are still suffering -- all of us need to give what we can. Remember too, the homeless pets and the kids who won’t get to celebrate Christmas. Our New Digs The Independent has moved to flashy new headquarters just down the hall from the old office. Previously, we were at the Red Horse Plaza (74 Montauk Highway) Suite 19. Our new refurbished digs are three doors down to the west, Suite 16. Because of that pesky hurricane our phone lines and fax machine were compromised. Hopefully by the time you read this all our services will be restored. Our email has been operational throughout, so you can always reach us at news@indyeastend. com, ads@indyeastend.com, photos at the same email address, and so on. Or better still, drop by for a visit!

Independent VOICES

A Helping Hand Dear Editor, East Hampton town’s CSEA executive board would like to take the time to acknowledge and thank its members for the job they have done in our community before, during and after Hurricane Sandy. All too often people forget that unions and the civil servants within them work for the people of the community. The relationship between town residents and the workforce is important. The last couple of weeks have been hard for everybody in the wake of a horrific storm that devastated parts of the east coast and unfortunately made its way into our small town. Even going unnoticed at

times, our community has depended on each other to lend helping hands and to make sure that we were able to safely function as a whole. Being prepared for the storm was crucial and interdepartmental cooperation was absolutely necessary. Communication between our workforce and the residents was critical in making sure that we were going to get through this storm with minimum damage and maximum efficiency. We told our members that our role was to keep the community safe and the town operational. Before the storm the Supervisor had declared a State of Emergency for that Monday and Tuesday. He made it clear in the press that residents were to stay home and off the roads, so that the town workers could safely and effectively do their jobs. Between high winds, rain, power outages and flooding in some areas every one of us knew we were going to play an integral part in the town’s recovery

LIPA Bashing We know, it’s an easy target, but we can’t help feel some sympathy for LIPA in the wake of the overwhelming criticism the utility company has endured in the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy. Yes, the LIPA infrastructure is outdated and its communications system incapable of dispatching the emergency crews shipped in from other states. We’ve known this for several years now, and the utility seemed on track to upgrade its system. Unfortunately, two hurricanes in two years retards progress. Politicians like Governor Cuomo saw an easy target and in our opinion took some cheap shots. Certainly the men and women of LIPA who toiled, literally, for 18 hours a day did their best. The truth is, it was one of the worst storms in history. We were flooded, battered by winds, and beset by electrical fires. In retrospect it was wishful thinking to believe the system would be up and running in a day or two. There is no silver lining here. Weather seems to be worsening along with global warming, and severe storms damage the LIPA system. A complete overhaul would cost an immense amount of money, and Long Islanders already pay far too much for electric power, and for that matter, gas and heating fuel. The governor needs to stop the LIPA bashing and come up with a plan -- and a way to raise the necessary funds -- to rebuild LIPA from the ground up. Otherwise, start stocking up on the batteries now -- it could be a long winter. efforts. Our members were utilized in every way possible, from making sure our roads were clear and safe to having staff answering phones and assisting residents. Cooperation with law enforcement was crucial as well for the closure of some roads and areas. Some of our members were used overnight in the East Hampton High School Emergency Shelter to lend a helping hand to community residents, while other members were moved around to where they could be utilized more effectively. During the power outages we made sure that the town buildings had the generators up and running and resources were readily accessible. Any information that residents may have needed during or after the storm was important for us to have. Short staffing and long hours made some tasks more difficult than usual. At the same time we all made sure that we were able to safely and efficiently

perform our responsibilities for the safety and functional ability of our community and its residents. The weeks after the storm, recovery efforts have been in full effect and every member has been able to help in their own way. Natural disasters can tear communities apart but they can also bring a community together. The CSEA and its members feel that our relationship with our community has strengthened since Hurricane Sandy. That is why CSEA wants to take this opportunity to extend our appreciation to the union members and residents of the Town of East Hampton for working together to ensure a safe and smooth post Hurricane recovery. Will the acting LIPA Chairman’s resignation accomplish anything? What should LIPA do to improve their performance? Sid Baker I don’t think his resignation will change anything. I think there won’t be any solution until they bury the power lines underground. There are places in the world where that’s what they do and we need to do it here or nothing will change.

School girl’s tennis team going 1-6 for the season. The girls brought Spring School spirit, enthusiasm and passion but where they came up short was with experience. How do you come back from a season like that? Well in 2012, they put the 2011 season behind them and came out fighting. What do I mean by fighting? Being no strangers to adversity and knowing that Springs School athletes never say die, returning players Kasey Brabant, Ruby Talmage, Michelle Nguyen and Phoebe Hines brought their experience and toughness to lead Springs to a 5-0 start of the season taking out everyone in their path! They finished up the season 5-2-1. The addition of 8th graders Diana Aguilar, Emily Driver, Alex Vecchio and Hannah Rosario led to many contributions to a victorious season. Also big time contributors, our 7th graders and future stars Lila Edwards, Maddy Schenck and Tali Friedman who hopefully will lead us to another successful season next year. Congratulations! And thank you to the 2012 Springs School Girls Tennis Team! KEVIN REYNOLDS

Dear Mr. Murphy, I have a couple of observations about the last election. I’m a little puzzled by State Senator Ken La Valle’s post-election comment that he defeated Bridget Fleming because the vote was for a suburban

Marianne Caserta Honestly I don’t think his resignation will help at all. They’ll just put someone else in and then the same thing will happen again. They have to reevaluate their whole system and then get someone in there who knows what they’re doing. John Chappel It’s 2012. We need a better delivery system for our electricity. The power lines were designed to withstand ice but not wind. Someone has to figure out how to make them durable. With global warming you can’t run an economy losing power after every storm. Christine Ganitsch They need better middle management. They need better organization and a better infrastructure. They need supervisors for the crews that come in to help. They didn’t have that. That management isn’t in place. They need to have a storm plan for the future. rural majority agenda not a New York City agenda. Since the last Republican Suffolk County Executive was allegedly engaged in ethics violations whereas the last two Republican mayors of New York City were highly-regarded moderates, it would seem Mr. La Valle’s bid for re-election was enhanced to some degree by New York City values. Perhaps Mr. La Valle is asserting that eastern Long Island is more conservative than New York City, however, Democrat Tim Bishop defeated conservative Republican Randy Altschuler and President Barack Obama carried the East End. The Independent made a good point in a recent editorial by questioning conservative Republican emphasis on what comedian and political commentator, Bill Maher, called “the lady parts,” and in my opinion, Mr. Altschuler missed an opportunity by failing to provide at least one specific example of how he might have improved the East End economy. As for the “lady parts,” this issue was also the focus of Ms. Fleming’s campaign. SUSAN CERWINSKI

What Went Wrong Dear Rick, The election is finally over and the losers are in post election mortem dissecting what went wrong? They will have four years to figure it out. If they do not come to the conclusion that they had the wrong message and the wrong messengers with which to deliver it, they can look forward to the same results four years hence. The shills for the 1 or 2 percent party of the wealthiest lost to those for the 98 or 99 percent party representing the middle class. Continued on page 19.

As for the messengers, a look at the votes not cast in their favor by those that knew each candidate best is a clear indicator of the level of esteem in which they are held by those whom they served directly. Michigan, Romney family’s home turf went for the other guy. And then there was Massachusetts. Romney was Governor there and they also went for the same other guy. Obviously they were not impressed enough with his governorship to vote for him again, this time for president. He lost them both handily. It seems he didn’t’ develop a following. Then there was the other guy, young gun Ryan who not only lost his state, the State of Wisconsin, where he was a representative, but his very own town of Jamesville. If this is the loyalty they have earned, by those who had experienced their leadership, our country is fortunate not having to undergo the same. NICHOLAS ZIZELIS

Israel Will Strike Iran Dear Rick, According to various intelligence

REAL ESTATE

THE INDEPENDENT Q Traveler Watchman

agencies Iran could have nuclear armaments ready for use against Israel by early 2013. The devices could be nuclear bombs, or more likely, nuclear warheads on missiles. Diplomacy by the United States and Western countries has been given a chance, but it has not worked to deter Iran’s nuclear program, and Iran continues to develop its nuclear weapons. Israel cannot allow Iran, and its irrational leadership, to have nuclear weapons because two or three nuclear detonations could wipe out Israel. Therefore, Israel must strike Iran with a multi-pronged attack, and it will only have one opportunity to neutralize the Iranian nuclear threat. Israel’s military will have to be on general alert for an Iranian counter strike using conventional weapons. It is doubtful any of the other countries in the Middle East will come to Iran’s aid. Israel cannot count on the Obama administration to come to its aid. President Obama erroneously believes sanctions will work to halt Iran’s nuclear armaments program, and at the same time he warns Israel not to strike Iran. Obama, with his coddling of Arab countries, is not a friend of Israel. Israel’s survival depends on military action against Iran. DONALD A. MOSKOWITZ

Two Arrested In Southampton By Emily Toy

On Friday Southampton Town Police arrested and charged Tyshawn O. Riddick, 22, of Riverhead, with two counts of reckless endangerment in the first degree, plus aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child, driving while ability impaired by drugs, and assault in

the second degree, all felonies. He was additionally charged with a slew of misdemeanors. At around 9:22 AM, after observing several traffic infractions on Ludlam Avenue in Riverside police attempted to stop a 1999 Dodge Durango truck. Riddick allegedly attempted to evade the officer, driving

recklessly and speeding. Police were able to follow Riddick to the area of Brookhaven Avenue in Flanders where they say he stopped his car, put it in reverse and rammed the front end of the police car while the officer was attempting to exit it. Police say Riddick then fled from the vehicle

on foot, leading them on a chase through the residential area until he was apprehended and placed under arrest near Oak Avenue and Arthur Avenue. Police found a three month old infant, later identified as Riddick’s son, in the rear passenger seat of the Durango. The infant was sent to Peconic Bay Medical Center for observation and later released without any injuries, according to Southampton Town Police. The officer who was assaulted was also brought to the medical center for multiple injuries and is in stable condition, police say. Riddick was held overnight and brought to Southampton Justice Court where he was remanded to county jail in lieu of $30,000 bail. At about 2:41 AM on Sunday, Nicole Sobol, 32, of Southampton, was arrested by Southampton Town Police for assault in the second degree, a felony, as well as criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and criminal mischief in the fourth degree, both misdemeanors. Sobol was a passenger in a motor vehicle accident at North Sea Road and Majors Path. According to police, Sobol exited the vehicle operated by her ex-boyfriend after the accident, then began to punch and kick him, striking him in the head and face with a high heel shoe causing lacerations and bruising. Police also say Sobol keyed the victim’s car. She was arrested at the scene, transported to police headquarters for processing and held for morning arraignment. The victim was transported to Southampton Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Seeing the devastation in the Rockaways was difficult, recalled Shapiro, “Going back there, after Sandy, was more than heartbreaking. I felt like I was in New Orleans in the Lower Ninth Ward. Every house was condemned. Doors were open and you could see straight through, as all of the furniture was piled outside, completely destroyed. Businesses and private homes, decimated. Independent / Ross School

At Ross’s High School Performing Arts Fall Concert on November 13, students in the Modern Jazz Dance troupe performed.

Ross Upper School The eighth grade’s unit on Islam culminated with a special Islamic Banquet Day on November 14. Held in Gandhi Hall, the celebration commenced with a presentation, “A Conversation with a Quaker and a Bahraini,” featuring eighth grade team leader Mark Tompkins and a Ross senior. Each spoke about how they came to their faith and how it influences them. The senior also answered questions about Islam, life in Bahrain, and her decision to wear a hijab, or traditional headscarf, at school. To help celebrate Islamic Banquet Day, the Café chefs served a special lunch highlighting foods from the Middle East. The entire Ross Upper School feasted on dates, raisins, marinated feta, dolmas, Greek yogurt, pomegranates, lentils, grilled yogurt-marinated chicken breasts, Moroccan chickpea stew, spiced rice and potatoes, Swiss chard, and tofu with saffron sauce. The students in all levels of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) have been giving presentations showcasing what they have learned during the first trimester. In Prep 1 and 2, students have been studying life from the beginning of time to the Sumerian period of Mesopotamia. They offered a cuneiform performance, and presentations on art and artifacts, spiritual practices from that time, and a model of a ziggurat, believed to be a dwelling place for the gods. They also re-enacted an ancient wedding ceremony. The advanced ESOL students in the Cultural Artifacts

class presented art and artifacts that they believed best reflected the history and culture of this time. Parents, faculty, and friends enjoyed an evening of music, song, and dance courtesy of the High School Performing Arts Fall Concert, which was held in the Center for Well-Being’s Court Theater on November 13.

Ross Lower School Held every fall, the Lower School Thanksgiving Community Lunch took place on November 16 in the Lower School Field House. This year, the event featured a special performance by members of the Shinnecock Nation, who performed songs about gratitude and peace on a ceremonial drum, along with dancers, including two children. The second grade visited Ross parent and artist Sylvia Hommert at her studio on Shelter Island on November 14. This is the second year Mrs. Hommert has hosted the second grade. They learned about her creative process and looked at her abstract artwork. They even got to work with her the next day in the Lower School art studio, creating their own abstract works of art following her technique. Students carved their own designs on canvases covered in hologram paper, resin, and beeswax. They then painted over the surface and removed the paint from the etched areas to reveal the hologram paper. Sylvia will complete the process by putting a coat of resin over the entire surface. The final pieces will be displayed at the school for the remainder of the year.

Light’s On! Specialists from Looks Great Services of Huntington this week decorated the Lighthouse Tower and Museum in Montauk with thousands of lights in preparation for Saturday’s annual Light the Light event. Held between 4:30 and 7 PM, the popular holiday season kick off is celebrating its fifth year. This year Montauk School Superintendent Jack Perna has the honor of flipping the switch. He was selected for his years of commitment and service to education in Montauk. The Light will remain lit every night through January 1, 2013. The rain date for the event is December 1. The al fresco celebration will feature holiday music by Sarah Conway and the Playful Souls. Santa has promised to make an appearance. On Sunday, the Lighthouse Committee of the Montauk Historical Society hosts “Christmas at the Lighthouse” from 11 AM to 4 PM. Take a picture with Santa, enjoy free refreshments, music, pony rides, and face painting for the kiddies. The gift shop and museum will be open, but the tower climb will not be available. K.M.

tax letter allowing eligible businesses to be exempt from payment of New York State sales taxes on materials purchased for rebuilding. “We want to make as many resources available as we possibly can,” said Tracy Stark-James executive director for Riverhead IDA, “We want to help small businesses rebuild and stay in Riverhead.” The IDA will also reduce its fees and, while following state law, look to streamline its normal procedure. This program is expected to offer economic benefits to reconstruction projects within Riverhead costing $100,000 or more. The East Hampton Town Budget for 2013 includes funding for a count of the deer population.

Budget Includes Deer Count The East Hampton Town Board unanimously adopted its proposed 2013 budget last Thursday night. The nearly $70 million spending plan is largely unchanged from the proposal Supervisor Bill Wilkinson debuted earlier this fall. One significant addition is a $40,000 inclusion to cover the cost of a survey that would be conducted as part of a comprehensive deer management plan. The town appointed Budget and Finance Advisory Committee sought the inclusion of the money. Last spring a draft management proposal crafted by a working group assembled by Councilman Dominick Stanzione was circulated, but has yet to be adopted. Before any action such as culling herds or pursuing sterilization programs, the working group wanted a scientific assessment of the population to be completed. Also on the subject of the near and deer, applications for the annual deer hunting lottery will be available in the town clerk’s office beginning on December 3. They must be submitted by 4 PM on December 21. Deer season opens at sunrise on January 7, 2013 and runs through sunset on January 31. K.M.

how things happen. I arranged the showing of Salt of the Sea, and it could be the last film shown in Montauk if our local movie theatre closes for good,” she said. “It is fitting if it works out that way,” Brumm continued. “Although losing either the movie theatre or the fishing industry would not be good for Montauk in so many ways.” To the notion of the last movie at the theater having a sea faring subject, theater owner David Rutkowski said simply, “I think that’s the way

Waves, Hurricanes, Play On By Rick Murphy

And then there were two. The high school football season is over for most teams, but the Riverhead Blue Waves and the Westhampton Hurricanes play on. Riverhead, the second seed in Suffolk’s Division II, brought West Babylon back to reality Saturday, besting the Cinderella team 30-14. Babylon, the eighth seed, stunned top seed West Islip last week to earn a semifinal berth. This time around though, it was Riverhead’s potent offense that took center stage. Jeremiah Cheatom proved to be the workhorse on this day. The bruising tailback was given the ball 33 times, and he responded by picking up 135 yards and scoring two touchdowns. That’s the way the Waves (8-2) operate -- bang it on the ground, then go upstairs when the

defense tries to adjust. Quarterback Ryan Blitzer, who scored Riverhead’s first touchdown on a four yard run in the first stanza, hooked up with Quinn Funn on a 75 yard strike to give his team a 21-7 third quarter lead. B l i t z e r f i n i s h e d w i t h 12 completions in 17 attempts for 202 yards. On defense, Riverhead pressured West Babylon’s Clifton Mehado all afternoon and Matt Hejmej recorded a safety that put the game out of reach. The loss ended the Eagles magical ride and gave them a 5-5 record for the year. Riverhead squares off against fifth seed North Babylon (7-3) at Stony Brook University Sunday for the Division II title. The locale of the title game bodes well for Leif Shay’s charges, the Waves won the county championship at Stony Brook in 2003 and the Long island

championship in 2008. Riverhead beat North Babylon 48-22 earlier in the season. The joyride also continues for Westhampton. The Hurricanes, the third seed, playing in the Division III semifinals, knocked off second seed Miller Place 19-14 Saturday. Quarterback Jack Murphy provided the fireworks, nailing 15 of 20 attempts for 139 and two scores. The upset avenges a 34-0 thumping at the hands of Miller Place in

October. Brian Corrigan was the defensive star for the winners. Twice he stymied fourth quarter charges by Miller Place, forcing a fumble to halt one drive and, in the waning seconds, sacking Ryan Gray as the Panthers were driving for what would have been the winning score. The Hurricanes have their work cut out for them Saturday when they take on Sayville at Stony Brook in a 4 PM affair -- The Golden Flashes, the defending Long Island champions, are once again undefeated (10-0). They crushed Huntington 41-14 to advance to the title game.
