Armed Robbery Sends Shockwaves Through Sag Harbor By Rick Murphy

A brazen gun-wielding robber and his accomplice tied up the storeowner and robbed her store on Main Street in Sag Harbor on the evening of November 19 and made a successful getaway. Seena Stromberg, who owns the Corner Closet on 108 Main Street, told police she was tied up in a storage area in the back of the store for about half an hour. She freed herself from what police said were “restraints placed on

her arms and legs,” went outside, and hailed a passerby who called police. The Corner Closet is a high-end consignment store, and among the items stolen were several designer handbags – the store was stocked with Hermes bags, which are extremely pricey. Several law enforcement agencies quickly responded. According to published reports, Southampton Town Police pulled a car over on the Bridgehampton Turnpike minutes later, and a couple was taken into

custody. Apparently, it was a false alarm, as the couple was eventually released and no charges were filed. Police are looking for an older

model American-made white sedan. The male suspect is Latino, they said. In addition to “several” handbags, some vintage clothing and jewelry were also taken, police said. The suspect, in his late twenties or early thirties, is about 5-foot, 3-inches tall with brown hair. He was wearing jeans and a black sweatshirt. The woman, also said to be Hispanic, is approximately 5-foot, five-inches with brown hair, also in her late 20s, early 30s. Eyewitnesses said she was wearing a pink sweater, a black hoodie, and jeans. First reports indicated that the suspect my have been in the Illusions store down the block immediately before entering the Corner Closet, acting suspiciously. But subsequent reports stated the individual did not match the description of the robber. Police said that the Corner Closet was not equipped with video cameras. It was also the subject of a police report in May, when the owner reported several items were stolen -- including handbags -- by shoplifters. Armed robberies are a rarity in Sag Harbor. Joe Schiavoni, the coproprietor of Schiavoni’s Market, was once robbed down in his basement office, prompting him to move it to the front window of the store. An individual brandishing a gun robbed the Madison Market more than a decade ago.

SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING TO GIVE THANKS FOR So on Sunday night I was stretched out in bed in a fetal position with my thumb in my mouth mourning the horrific loss by my football Giants, trying to figure out why the Giants’ hapless defensive coordinator, Perry Fewell, went into a “prevent” defense and put no pressure at all on Dallas quarterback Tony Romo while Romo marched his team down the field in the closing seconds of the game.

I searched for something that I should be thankful for on this Thanksgiving. “Let me see where I am at this stage of my life,” I thought. Bill de Blasio is my new mayor. Barack “If you like your insurance you can keep your insurance” Obama is going to be President for the next three years. Tom Coughlin, the old fool who

would not play Hakeem Nicks – our wide receiver who could have won us the game against Dallas – because Nicks hadn’t practiced all week, will not be fired along with all his other lame coaches. I realized I was getting too morose when I noticed my sweet little dog Shlomo was hiding all the sharp instruments in the house. So I’m going to cheer up. Here goes: I’M THANKFUL that our country was once run by the Greatest Generation and these brave men and women, Democrats and Republicans, deserve our thanks. I’M NOT SO THANKFUL because we’re in big trouble today with Democrat and Republican turkeys running and ruining our lives. A relative of mine sent me this: Putting things into perspective: December 7, 1941 to May 8, 1945 is 3 years, 5 months and 1 day. This is the period of time from the day we were attacked at Pearl Harbor to the day Germany surrendered. During that time, we mobilized millions of people, built tens of thousands of tanks, planes, jeeps, subs, cruisers, destroyers, torpedoes, millions upon millions of guns, bombs, ammo, etc. Turned the tide in North Africa, invaded Italy, executed D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge and the Race to Berlin – all while fighting the Japanese in the Pacific! . . . And in the same amount of time our current administration can’t build a working webpage – from March 21, 2010 to October 1, 2013 is 3 years, 6 months and 10 days. I’M THANKFUL that five years ago someone sent me this joke: Q: What’s the difference between Greta Van Susteren and Barack Obama?

A: Greta only talks out of one side of her mouth. I’M NOT SO THANKFUL that so many people who wrote me nasty letters when I published that joke five years ago are in total agreement with me today, but they never call and they never write. I’M THANKFUL that my wife, the beautiful Judy Licht, has never once shopped during that roller derby we call Black Friday. I’M NOT SO THANKFUL that she treats every other day of the year as though it were Black Friday. I’M THANKFUL that even though Obama was so desperate to make a deal with Iran so he could announce “Peace in Our Time,” he apparently made a deal that is so, so bad that even Chuck Schumer and a lot of top Democrats are blasting it. Said one Democrat, Rep. Eliot Engel, “I don’t think you bargain in good faith by going ‘squishy.’” I’M NOT SO THANKFUL that Barack Obama, who thinks he’s Wilt Chamberlain but acts more like Neville Chamberlain, came up with this cockamamie “deal” with Iran because he needed to get our attention away from the ObamaCare disaster. Here’s the pattern: He will establish a new “red line” that Iran cannot cross, otherwise he will get angry and make a strong speech. And then if Iran nukes Israel he will get really angry and make an even stronger speech. And then if they nuke Saudi Arabia he will tell the United Nations on them. I’M THANKFUL that Obama is only 17th in GQ’s “Least Influential Celebrities of 2013.” I’M NOT SO THANKFUL that Dennis Rodman, Paula Deen, Anthony Weiner, Miley Cyrus, Aaron Hernandez and Tim Tebow are among those who came out ahead of him. GOP To OK CIP ASAP? By Kitty Merrill

Hurry up. Slow down. Opposing opinions were the order of the evening last Thursday night, as the town board hosted a public hearing on a draft Capital Improvement Plan for the East Hampton Airport. Dominick Stanzione seemed inclined to support the “hurry up” opinion. In fact, the lame duck councilman had a resolution to adopt the plan ready to go after the hearing. He tabled it to give Town Attorney John Jilnicki time to investigate legal questions that arose during the nearly two-hour input session. Opening the hearing, Stanzione informed that it’s been over 10 years since the town hosted a hearing on a capital plan for the airport. There are risks associated with continuing “this deliberate neglect,” he said. As stewards of the facility, the town board has a responsibility to ensure its safe operation, he asserted. S u p e r v i s o r B i l l Wi l k i n s o n emphasized the focus of the hearing was neither airport noise, nor whether to pursue funding from the Federal Aviation Administration. Funding is for the others to decide, said Stanzione, dryly wishing his successors “good luck.” Airport manager Jim Brundige and Dennis Yap from DY Consultants, the private aviation-consulting firm hired to craft the plan, offered background and an overview of the proposal. Brundige noted that there has only been one capital improvement at the airport in the last nine years. Yap presented the five-year capital plan, which is actually a single page list of 26 items and their estimated costs. The scarcity of detail in the “plan,” as well as the scant amount of time available to review it, topped the list of complaints from opponents to its passage. Patricia Currie labeled the CIP “devoid of any detail,” and “a sham,” while Bob Wolfram noted recent voter approval of bonds in the Sag Harbor School district. If members of the school board presented a plan as flimsy as the CIP to residents, they’d laugh, he said. Chuck Newman derided the document as mere “line items.” Without additional information, “I can’t comment on them, I don’t know what they mean,” he said. Tom MacNiven reported that he couldn’t find the plan on the town’s website, or the airport website, or Google. He got his copy from a

friend who got his from a friend. “That’s transparency?” MacNiven asked rhetorically. Several of the over two dozen speakers echoed complaints about the eleventh hour release of the draft CIP. Many said it wasn’t available until that day. (The published hearing notice, which ran for two weeks in advance of the hearing, stated it was available for review at the town clerk’s office.) Councilwoman Sylvia Overby also reported that she’d just received her copy. Bob Malafronte summarized a prevailing sentiment. “Slow down.

Give us more information and let us have time to digest this.” Offering the other side of the coin, airport supporters – pilots and those with businesses related to the facility – spoke of an immediate need to maintain the town asset. Two speakers reported deer-related accidents on and near the runway. Michael Norbeck works at Sound Aircraft. Part of his job entails undertaking “runway sweeps” to rid the landing strip of obstructions. Chasing a deer off the runway recently, he hit one of the large lights alongside the strip. Everything on the CIP list

is a priority and “needs to happen quickly” he said. Pilot Bernard Karwick told the harrowing story of landing at the airport at about 6 PM one night when, “You can’t see anything on the ground.” Coming in at 100 mph he saw two deer crossing the runway. One got by, then he heard “a thump.” The animal was decapitated – its head on one side of the runway, body on the other. The deer problem at the airport is “huge,” he said. The partial fence currently on site is nothing more than a trap for the animals. Karwick figured there are 50 deer strikes a year at the airport, many unreported. Twice as many speakers offered opinions in opposition to the CIP as voiced support for its immediate adoption. Some speculated the apparent rush was part of a GOP Continued on Page 17.

Saturday: Shop Local, Shop Small By Kitty Merrill

Considers the stats: • Small businesses accounted for 65 percent of all net new jobs over the past 17 years. • Small businesses employ 77 million Americans. • For every square foot a local firm occupies, the local economy gains $179 compared to $105 for a chain store. • If just half the U.S. employed population spent $50 each month in locally-owned, independent businesses, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. • Residential neighborhoods served by a successful independent

business district gained, on average, 50 percent more in home values than their citywide markets. • Independent retailers return more than three times as much money per dollar of sales than chain competitors. • Independent restaurants return more than two times as much money per dollar of sales than national restaurant chains. With the motto “Rebuilding America One Main Street At A Time,” Independent We Stand is a movement dedicated to encouraging independently-owned businesses to reach out to their communities and educate neighbors about the

benefits of “buying local.” It’s focused on helping the little guy not just survive, but thrive, and the statistics above, sourced from the U.S Labor Department and the Small Business Administration, among others, are included on the movement’s website. “Don’t call me a small businessman,” Michael Clark of Crossroads Music in Amagansett joked. “It sends a bad message to women.” A member of Independent We Stand, Clark said the statistics were “eye-opening to me as a business owner and a consumer about how important it is to shop local -- the money stays local.”

The individual person is the only one who is going to be able to fix the local economy, Clark believes. “If we all step up and do that, it’s how we can make a difference.” This weekend’s our chance. Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, find Small Business Saturday. Founded by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses. And why not? They’re the ones who support community charities over and over, with donations of goods, services and time, Clark pointed out. “All these benefits that happen in town, we gladly give back to the community. You can’t get that at Kmart.” You can’t get the shopping incentives AMEX is offering its cardholders this Saturday there, either. Hampton Bays Wines & Spirits is one of a slew of local stores participating in the Small Business Saturday incentives, manager Chris Holmes reported. For every $25 card holders spend in any establishment, American Express gives back a $10 credit. Just visit americanexpress.com and sign up to receive the credit. Type in the zip code, said Holmes, “and they’ll tell you every store that’s participating.” Hampton Bays Wines & Spirits has participated in the AMEX Small Business Saturday incentives in the past, and customers were eager to join in, Holmes informed. “They love to get that little bit extra back.” Those shopping small may be getting a little bit back, but they’re giving, too. “The “ShopLocal” concept is one that should be embraced by all members our community,” Paul Monte, president of the Montauk Chamber of Commerce, said. “By keeping our local dollars local we help to ensure the viability of our local economy, thereby improving the quality of life for all of our residents. The Montauk Chamber of Commerce encourages everyone to support our local businesses not only on this Small Business Saturday but throughout the entire year.” kmerrill@indyeastend.com

amendments to Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst’s preliminary budget, including efforts to increase the town’s Water Quality Protection Fund and increase funding for the elevation of Dune Road (calling for over $1 million). However the board was split on whether or not providing funding for the projects from taxpayer monies would be fiscally responsible. Both projects, although strongly supported by town board members, are not slated to receive additional funding through next year’s budget any time soon, although recently $100,000 was dedicated to the

Septic Rebate Incentive Program, which is linked to the Water Quality Protection Fund. The Dune Road project is expected to receive funds through federal money for Hurricane Sandy. The new budget shows an increase in spending, about $2 million worth, as opposed to the budget for 2013. The spending hike is reflective of the town’s nearly 500-strong staff, plus the addition of two new employees at town hall. The town supervisor can expect a base salary of $102,000 plus $42,754 in benefits and retirement. The deputy supervisor gets $15,000, the supervisor’s executive assistant can expect $77,286, and the deputy chief of staff will earn $63,672. Elected town board members will earn a salary of $60,000 each and both the town clerk and the highway superintendent will get $97,000. $86,600 will go to the town tax receiver, while the tax assessor will earn $97,419 (a pay increase of over $10,000 from last year). Each of the four elected town justices will get a check for $67,100. The town attorney will receive $122,039, while the deputy town attorney will earn $109,326.

A Main Event On Tap By Kitty Merrill

The Suffolk County Water Authority this month completed eight water main extensions on the South Fork, plus began another project in Springs. Last week installation of three sizes of pipe began on Three Mile Harbor Road. The project comprises 8128 feet from Isle of Wight Road to Folkstone Drive. According to SCWA spokesman Tim Motz, the main will serve 71 new customers. (The Authority brings public water to a neighborhood if 40 percent of residents give their okay.) The project is expected to last about 10 days, depending on the weather, Motz informed. In other SCWA news, more than 10,000 feet of new pipe was laid in projects from Eastport to Springs. The projects range from a 186-foot extension on Barclay Court in East Hampton to a 2,893-foot extension on Oyster Pond Lane, also in East Hampton. According to a release from SCWA, the main extension projects, from west to east are: 1,378 feet on Sunrise Highway

Service Road in Eastport 209 feet on West Side Avenue in East Quogue 584 feet on Parrish Road in North Sea 1,910 feet on Whalebone Landing in North Sea 2 , 5 2 4 f e e t o n Wa i n s c o t t Stone Road, Fernwood Road and Merriwood Drive in Wainscott 186 feet on Barclay Court in East Hampton 2,893 feet on Oyster Pond Lane in East Hampton 580 feet on Kings Point Road, Springs “These pipes will add to our growing infrastructure on the East End and provide safe and constantly tested water to dozens of new customers,” said SCWA Chief Executive Officer Jeff Szabo. In addition to being subject to rigorous tests from the New York State Department of Health and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, public water from SCWA comes with many advantages, officials say. Fire protection is enhanced, thanks to increased water pressure and more hydrants. Homeowner’s insurance is sometimes decreased

Pipe work on Three Mile Harbor Road, bringing public water to select neighborhoods last week, moved along swimmingly.

due to the better protection. Another plus? During weather emergencies, people who receive public water are more likely to have uninterrupted service than those relying on electricity to operate private wells. “While many Suffolk residents who use private wells were without water service for days when electricity service was out following Super Storm Sandy, virtually all SCWA customers, with the exception of those on Fire Island, still had use of their water supply,” the SCWA release points out. An independent public-benefit

corporation operating under the authority of the Public Authorities Law of the State of New York, SCWA serves approximately 1.2 million Suffolk County residents. It operates without taxing power on a not-forprofit basis. For years, community consensus often opposed bringing public water to varied areas in East Hampton. The feeling was it would encourage development. With the town reaching build out and fewer large parcels available for subdivision, more residents are warming up to the prospect of public water. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Shop Safely This Season By Emily Toy

The holidays are upon us, and that means people from all walks of life, young and old, rich and poor, will be hustling and bustling to get the best deals available before time runs out. This Friday, Black Friday, marks the busiest shopping day of the year, with some stores opening at unusually early hours, aiming to accommodate waves of oncoming customers. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco provided safety tips last week in an effort to make sure

everyone has a safe shopping experience. “Whenever people feel stressed and rushed, they can be more vulnerable to crime,” DeMarco said. “These tips offer some basic guidelines to follow to be safer while holiday shopping.” While shopping: • Expect long lines and be patient. Enter stores safely; there is no item worth rushing through a crowd and risking injury. • Do it with others, there is safety in numbers. • Don’t leave your purse unattended in your cart, even for a few

seconds. • Don’t carry large amounts of money. Keep money in a front pocket. • Only carry one or two credit cards and make sure you secure them after use. • If shopping online, stick with established retailers and retailers from our local community with a presence online. Shopping with children: • Always supervise your children in public places. Accompany young children to the restroom. • Remind children to remain in the same area in the event they

lose sight of you. • Never dress children in clothing that displays their first or last names. When parking cars and walking around parking lots: • Be aware of your surroundings. • Always park where there is plenty of light between your car and the store. • Keep your car locked and have your keys in hand before you go to your car. • Before leaving your vehicle, make sure there isn’t anything of value in sight, including cell phones, GPS units and holiday purchases. • Parking lots are typically very crowded at the start of the holiday season. Use patience when looking for parking and pay extra attention when pulling out of a parking spot. DeMarco also urges everyone to remember, if you are a victim of a crime call 911 immediately.

By Rick Murphy

RICK’S SPACE A Vegan Holiday I am a green vegan. This is all part of my new kick to lead a healthy life and respect my body and the world I live in. This isn’t the first time I’ve flirted with this type of alternate lifestyle. Back in the late sixties, right around the time we were being told earth shoes were really cool, me and my friends decided not to eat meat and then cleanse our bodies. This worked for awhile, until we realized that if you drink a lot of booze, take copious amounts of drugs, and smoke like a chimney you’re going to need a little

more substance than Grape Nuts to stay alive. This was also about the time when all the girls I was dating gave themselves names with nature themes like Sunshine, Moon Lady and Pearl Necklace – oh wait, that was a waitress I met in Vegas in 1987. I always found I was naturally drawn to the girls with these nature themed names, who inevitably wore beads and yes, had flowers in their hair, but as usual my generation went a little too far. I realized that the day I asked some comely, bare-footed babe to go

out with me. “What’s your name,” I cooed. She batted her eyelashes and said, “Bowel.” That ended that. I found out later she fell off her earth shoes and broke her back. The theme of treating Mother Earth in an environmentally sensitive way eventually broadened to treating our minds and bodies with the same reverence. My assignment this week was to research a Thanksgiving menu that would reflect that mindset. I came up with a big turkey shaped blob of Tofu with 12-grain bread, sprouts, and cod liver oil. A tasty holiday treat to be sure. “Then I’ll wash it down with three glasses of brandy,” I said. There was silence in the room. Finally Karen said, “You know, Rick, you need to treat your body like a temple.” “I do,” I replied. “In fact, I treat it like the Yeshiva on Kings Highway in

Brooklyn.” “No, I mean it. Brandy kills the soul and damages the brain, not to mention your kidneys and liver.” “Is there any downside?” I asked. I’m the kind of person if you tell me I can’t, I will. I have Determination. Perseverance. Willpower. I am strong. I am invincible. I am constipated. I am Woman -- Oops, just kidding about that one. But the next day the new heart healthy Rick was born and a new era of Green began at The Independent and at home. Karen started drying the laundry outside. She made me a nice steaming bowl of natural oatmeal for breakfast. She packed me celery and carrot sticks with hummus for lunch. We had salad and more salad for dinner. We used biodegradable plates. We started using reusable toilet paper, and what a joy that proved to be. At work, we switched to energy efficient light bulbs. We asked Jerry Della Femina if he would install a solar heating system (“Drop Dead” he replied). We have 12-grain bread. (Can anyone even name 12 grains? Let’s see; wheat, rice, barley, Sleepy, Dopey, Blitzen . . . ) We use recycled paper. Obviously, meat – the burnt flesh of hapless animals – could no longer be allowed to enter my temple, nor could I intake alcohol, the potion of the devil. Days passed to weeks. No meat. No liquor. Well, I mean, don’t get me wrong, I still drink. But I only drink liquids that are in harmony with my mind and body, nourishment that will foster the image of the Inner Me residing in a temple. Wine, as it turns out, is a natural antioxidant, good for the heart, and good for the mind. And in accordance with green principles and healthy living advocates, that’s what I will imbibe tonight. Two glasses of wine. Two great, BIG glasses of wine. (And a few beers.) For dinner, local veggies, some nuts and grains, and spare ribs. “Spare ribs are meat,” Karen claimed. Nonsense. Can any of us claim we’ve ever seen or heard of a herd of spare ribs? Not even in the zoo. The next thing you know bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches will be off limits. You see folks, there is no god. The Supreme Being is the Collective Soul of every living creature that has ever existed on earth. Each of us is a tiny part of a greater good, and what we do affects not just ourselves but all of us. So when one of us eats the scorched flesh of a dead cow, it contaminates all of us. (I personally don’t give a crap, but I though you would like to know.) Thanksgiving is upon us, so I’ll have to decide if turkey is considered meat or not. Anyhow, I want to thank the Leg Of Lamb of God who taketh away the sins of the world.

EDITORIAL A Common Sense Approach To Consolidation We found it interesting a couple years back, that when Springs residents were clamoring for school district consolidation just about every local school superintendent queried (there are six districts in East Hampton Town) said they believed their positions should be retained. That struck us as self-serving (ya think?) given that the combined enrollment of all the local schools is a fraction of some of the other districts in the state, and they do nicely with one superintendent. That’s why it was welcome news that Greenport and Southold school districts intend to share a superintendent. More surprising, both men involved voiced confidence that it would be an effortless merger that would benefit both districts. Southold Superintendent David Gamberg will fill the dual post beginning next July. The outgoing Greenport Superintendent, Michael Comanda, enthusiastically endorsed the idea. Gamberg will report to both school boards, and his salary divvied up. “In the tax levy cap environment, this could be something that saves both districts money and, additionally, provides more opportunities for shared programs,” Gamberg

said. Amen to that. School superintendents hereabouts make between $200,000 and $300,000 including benefits. Yet some of the districts, like Bridgehampton, are tiny by any standards. With the advent of the tax cap, districts have been forced to make cuts. We suggest this is one to put on the table – it might be more prudent to share a superintendent with another district or districts than cut a critical educational program or excise a talented teacher. Springs has already altered its administrative model and brought in a part time superintendent. It’s too soon to say if that is an effective model, but it’s worth trying. Voters in Southampton recently turned down a proposed merger with Tuckahoe School District that would have lowered taxes in Tuckahoe but raised them in Southampton. Perhaps Tuckahoe taxpayers may want to approach Southampton with a different proposal – merge administrations, and lower taxes by doing so. Both Southold and Greenport school board members acknowledge they are in unchartered waters. “Sharing a superintendent is not without its challenges,” they said in a joint press release. Let’s assume they pull it off seamlessly. Shouldn’t other local school districts consider the same thing?

Great Legislation

To the Editor, Thank you to the citizens of New York State, who read, understood and voted yes on Proposition 2 on the statewide ballot November 5th. This Veterans initiative corrected an inequity in the NYS constitution, Veterans who are now certified as having a service connected disability received after their appointment to a civil service position will be entitled to additional credit for promotion. Getting this proposition on the ballot did not happen overnight, in fact it took about five years of persistence by our Legislator Fred Thiele and Senator Ken LaValle to get it on the ballot and I want to thank them both for collaborating with me on this legislation. This great legislation was evident in the support that it received with 84 percent of voters supporting it. This was a great Veteran’s Day. Thank you, and we thank you for your support. What are you thankful for this year? Kelly McHugh I’m so thankful for having my son. I love everything about him. He’s a big time cuddler. He’s three and he goes to daycare now. He’s such an easy child. We’re planning his birthday party. It will have a garbage truck theme. He’s obsessed with garbage trucks! Kathy Tuthill I’m thankful for my family and for my grandchildren. It’s been a very good year. Nothing in particular but I’m so happy that everyone is in good health and doing well with their lives. I’m looking forward to spending the Holidays with all of them. Alice Maeder I’m grateful that everyone in my family is well. And I am so grateful that I’m feeling well again. I’ve had quite a year. Breast cancer, two knee replacements and I had two cataract surgeries in the spring. I swear the only thing left they can do to me is a lobotomy! Suzanne Borget I’m thankful for my family being together and healthy. And I’m grateful. The world is changing so fast. So many people I know are struggling right now. These are scary times and things seem to get worse and worse so every holiday gets a bit more special.

CIP ASAP?

Continued from page 7. plan to tie the town to the FAA as soon as possible. Charles Ehren called the CIP a “transparent” attempt to support a “phony” argument for FAA funding. Other speakers speculated the $10 million price tag was designed to scare the public into supporting the pursuit of federal, rather than local, funding of so many bigticket items. Overby noted the first conceptual version of the CIP she saw last summer called for expenditures on the order of $6 million. By early fall, the cost surged to $9.8 million, with last week’s iteration listing a total tab of $10.4 mil. Although Yap described the CIP as a mere tool for financial planning, when pressed he admitted the FAA will only offer grants for projects listed in an adopted capital plan. However, the projects listed must already be included in the adopted master plan. Otherwise, they’d have to undergo State Environmental Quality Review Act examination. Yap said the projects in the list were included in the master plan; attorney Pat Trunzo from the Committee to Stop Airport Expansion said his group identified

REAL ESTATE

at least six projects that aren’t. The assertion prompted Stanzione to table his “after-hearing resolution” calling for the adoption of the CIP. Several times throughout the evening, board members and members of the public appeared confused, thanks to items related to runways and a taxiway that seem contradictor y. The CIP anticipates costs for the temporary rehabilitation of Runway 4-22 in 2014, then additional costs for “full rehabilitation design” in 2016 and construction in 2017. It also calls for taxiway rehabilitation design. Currently 4-22 is used as a taxiway. Would it continue to be one, or was there a plan to create a threerunway airport? Would another runway, runway 16-34, which is also tapped in the plan for a total rehab, become a taxiway? The answer was unclear. What was clear was a concern, voiced by Kathy Cunningham of the Quiet Skies Coalition, that a three-runway airport can accept more traffic, which means more noise, and ultimately translates to an expansion. Yap said there is no plan for a three-runway facility. Could the outgoing GOP majority adopt the CIP, then rush to pursue a federal grant, tying the town to years of FAA assurances? If the

www.indyeastend.com

board accepts the plan and submits it to the FAA, “Step one’s done,” Councilman Peter Van Scoyoc pointed out. He said he’s happy to have a discussion of capital needs at the airport, but at the same time, noted that none of the projects needed to improve safety at the facility have been addressed in the last two years. There’s been no assessment of the projected costs and no discussion of any of the

November 27, 2013

projects at the board level, he said. Yes, adoption of a CIP is a necessary step to receive FAA funding, Councilwoman Theresa Quigley affirmed, but there’s nothing in the plan about FAA funding. Tying the two together is “a red herring,” she said. Each project in the CIP -- there are 26 – would be subject to a separate public hearing and vote, Jilnicki advised. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Riley Avenue School In November, Sheila Davies, a Nurse Practitioner at North Shore University Hospital LIJ and a parent of two children at the Riley Avenue School in Calverton, volunteered to teach a unit on heart health to the students at Riley through a program she created and calls the “Heartist” (Heart + Artist) project. Davies and some of the staff at

North Shore University Hospital came to the school on Wednesday to share with the children some “heart healthy facts” about how to keep their hearts strong through healthy eating and exercise. Ms. Davies and her colleagues shared information with the children about what they need to do to maintain a heart healthy lifestyle. They discussed elements of a

healthy diet and exercise. This was followed by a demonstration by student chefs, Cristopher Perez and

Joelle LoPiccolo, who demonstrated how easy it is to make “heart healthy” snacks: fruit kabobs, yogurt parfaits and fruit cones. “This was a fantastic parentinitiated program,” exclaimed Riley Avenue Principal David Enos. “The program works on so many levels, and it is a great example of character education and community service of the highest order. We’re very thankful to Ms. Davies and the North Shore University Hospital.”

Roanoke And Phillips Avenue The student-initiated antibullying movement in two Riverhead elementary schools was the brainchild of Morgan Dunn, a Roanoke Avenue Elementary School student who was determined to stop bullying in her elementary school. Last year, Morgan met with Principal Tom Payton and asked if she could form a group to end bullying the Roanoke Anti-Bullying Club became a real presence in the life of the school. This year, the group has changed their name to “The Peacemakers” but their message remains the same: “Speak Up, Don’t Be A Bystander, Forgive Others, Accept Others for Their Differences, Include Others, Seek Help If You Need It, and We Can Make A Difference”. This student movement has been adopted by fourth graders at the Phillips Avenue Elementary School. The students groups at both Roanoke and Phillips meet with Shannon Kutner, a Riverhead Community Awareness Program (CAP) elementary social worker, and give up some of their recess time to discuss ways to end bullying in their school.

A 32-year-old Riverhead man was convicted Thursday of all charges in an 11-count indictment outlining the physical and emotional abuse of his girlfriend who he choked and briefly smothered in an altercation in August of 2012. Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said Travis James, convicted two and a half years ago of violating orders of protection, is a “serial abuser” who deserves state prison time for his behavior. “Our evidence presented at this bench trial also included proof the defendant repeatedly made harassing phone calls to the victim in violation of the Order of Protection.” Spota said James also “delivered the threatening message to his exgirlfriend, through an emissary, to not come to court.” During an argument on August 4, 2012 in the home on Fanning Boulevard James shared with the woman, Spota said the defendant “put both of his hands around her neck and threw her onto her bed,” and, as he pinned her, James “held a throw pillow over her face, obstructing her breathing for several seconds.” For that attack, the defendant was charged and found guilty of two counts of Aggravated Criminal Contempt, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation, Criminal Contempt in the First and Second Degrees, and Harassment

The East Islip Redmen did almost everything right in the Suffolk County Division II title game against Riverhead Friday night in Stony Brook. They bottled up star running back Jeremiah Cheatom and shut down the Blue Waves’ high-powered offense, holding that unit to a single touchdown. They had the ball with two minutes left on the clock with a chance to take home the title. And, East Islip had history on its side — the Redmen handed Riverhead its only loss earlier in the season. There was just one intangible East Islip neglected to guard against, and his name is Ryan Hubbard. In a game where Cheatom was held to 87 rushing yards (on 22 carries) and

quarterback Cody Smith was kept under wraps, points were hard to come by. Hubbard, though, not a main cog in the offense, stepped up to score three touchdowns and earn the MVP award as Riverhead won its second consecutive title, 20-14. Smith hit Hubbard for a threeyard pass to open the scoring. Hubbard plays both ways, but he is a stalwart of the defensive unit. He snagged an errant pass from East Islip star quarterback Hugens Tranquille and returned it 22 yards for a score to give the locals a 14-0 halftime lead. The Redmen were not to be denied. Their pressure defense stymied Riverhead’s high-octane offense, and East Islip’s ground game started to wear down the Blue Waves’ tiring defense. Matt Walter

scored in the third quarter, and the extra point made it a 14-7 affair. Erik Adon, who led all rushers with 123 yards, plowed through the Riverhead defense for a nine-yard score midway through the fourth. The extra point tied the game at 14. A late Riverhead drive stalled, giving East Islip the ball on its 16 yard-line with two minutes left in the fray. This time it was Riverhead’s defense that stiffened, with Ryun Moore recording two stops. The Wave forced a fourth down punt, and Riverhead sent a receiver back to field the kick. It was Ryan Hubbard. The high punt came down on the Riverhead 20, and with only 30 seconds left, both sides undoubtedly were assuming an overtime period would commence. But Hubbard fielded the ball cleanly and, he said afterwards, he spotted teammate Steve Reid engage a would-be tackler on his left. He broke toward

Riverhead Takes County Title — Again! the sideline where a wall of blockers formed. Hubbard accelerated, and made a beeline for the end zone some 80 yards away with a half dozen Redmen giving futile chase. He scored with just six ticks left on the clock. The Riverhead bench and a large contingent of fans erupted. It was bedlam, and the party lasted until midnight when the giddy group arrived home, only to find scores of well wishers there to meet the bus. Riverhead (10-1) won the Division II title for the second consecutive year. The Wave last won the Long Island championship in 2008. Friday Leif Shay’s charges have their work cut out for them -- mighty Carey High School of Franklin Square, undefeated with an 11-0 mark, stands in the way of a Division II Long Island Championship. The Carey took the Nassau County Division II title by besting Garden City, 20-16.

FANTASY SP By Skippy Brown

THE INDEPENDENT Q Traveler Watchman

RTS

Making Final Plans By the time you read this, you’ll probably know if you’re going to be in the playoffs or not. Fantasy playoffs begin this week in some leagues and next week in most others. It is important to realize strategy shifts during the playoffs, and the time to adjust your roster is now. During the regular season, we stressed depth. We advised you to keep active on the free agent, trade, and waiver markets to secure as many quality players as you could. That was because with all the bye weeks and injuries it was important to have as many good players as possible. It still is, but the big difference is you’ll want your backups, by and large, to be handcuffed to your starters. What that means is, try to get the backup to your star players. The reason for this subtle shift is because there is no trading allowed during the playoffs. In fact, some leagues don’t even allow waiver or free agent pickups. Let’s use a hypothetical example of why handcuffs become increasingly important. Let’s say you have LeSean McCoy and Reggie Bush as your starting running backs. You are going to start them every week in the playoffs, no matter who else you have on your roster. Chances are, you have some pretty good – but not great—backups - guys like Darren Sproles, for example. In the perfect world, you’ll never use Sproles unless Bush or McCoy get hurt. But what if they do? Here’s the little secret professional fantasy players know that most amateur players don’t: the backup to a great running back is usually going to perform better than a second tier RB from another team. The reason is a subtle one: even if the backup (handcuff) isn’t as talented as some other running backs in the league, he is a safer play. This is because the system he plays in is more conducive to fantasy success. Let’s take McCoy – he has 1009 rushing yards already this season. Let’s say he goes down to injury – his backup, Bryce Brown, who only has 165 yards the entire season, is going to be the benefactor of the Eagles offense that is geared to springing McCoy for long gains. In other words, Brown is going to get a lot of those yards filling McCoy’s shoes.

So even if in reality Sproles is a better player, for fantasy purposes Brown is far more valuable to McCoy owners. This is true at most ever y position. Take Green Bay – when quarterback Aaron Rodgers went down, his backup Seneca Wallace stepped in. Wallace got hurt and a complete unknown with no experience, Scott Tolzien, stepped in. Nevertheless, Tolzien put up some good fantasy numbers – it’s because the offensive system he is in is pass-orientated.

www.indyeastend.com

Tolzien outplayed half the quarterbacks in the league in his first start, yet he probably isn’t as talented as any of them. The bottom line is: try to get the handcuffs to your star players unless the guys on your bench are so good they can step right in. The only caveat is don’t waive any players who may help your opponent. For example, even if you have three good tight ends you’ll have to hold onto them if the team you are playing needs a good tight end or your opponent will grab the guy you waive. We’ve worked all season to make the playoffs – now it’s time to win the playoffs. You do that by dancing with the guys that brung you to the dance: plug in your best lineup, and if one of your players goes down to injury make sure you have his backup on your team.

OUCH! Somebody forgot to duck. A bulldozer fell off a flatbed after it struck the train trestle on Route 114 in East Hampton Saturday morning. The dump truck pulling the flatbed made it under the trestle, but the ‘dozer was just a little too tall. No one was injured, unless you count pride.
