Real Estate Market Recovered Nicely By Rick Murphy
seven years.” “The demand for residential and luxury homes continues at an extremely strong rate,” said Jason B. Schommer, an associate broker for Corcoran. Among the harbingers of the good times ahead: sales in the fourth quarter were the highest in nearly a decade. There were 734 deed transfers in the Hamptons in the fourth quarter, 100 more than the third quarter and 48 percent more than the same time period a year earlier. The average sale price was $2.06 million, 16.8 percent above the previous quarter and 31 percent higher than the final quarter of 2013. Listing inventory declined by

The numbers don’t lie. Those who insisted the salad days were gone for good should prepare for a hearty portion of humble pie. Fourth quarter and full year results for 2014 confirm that the recovery of the Hamptons real estate market is complete and the market may be poised for the kind of growth traditionally associated with local real estate. Jonathan Miller of Miller Samuels Real Estate Appraisers interprets the data and authors the Elliman Report. He said “sales and housing prices” are up sharply and the fourth quarter featured “the highest median sales price in more than

for vacant land is “quite strong” throughout the East End. In fact, there was a 110 percent increase in the average sale price of vacant parcels in the fourth quarter in 2014 compared to the fourth quarter of 2013. These figures directly correlate to what Schommer calls the “continued confidence of builders.” (Our cover photo is a Curto & Curto offering in Southampton that should be completed in March. Cynthia Barrett of Douglas Elliman’s Bridgehampton office has the listing.) Trophy houses that transferred title in the fourth quarter included 420 Further Lane, which listed for and sold for $21.5 million – and it’s not on the direct oceanfront, though it has a waterview from the roof deck. The 7000 square foot house sits on 3.2 manicured acres with a tennis court and a grotto-like hot tub. One of the most publicized deals was the sale of an historic Georgian Continued on Page 27.

IN DEFENSE OF BRIAN WILLIAMS
It was and still is the most famous swing of a bat in baseball history. It was called “The Shot Heard ‘Round the World.” It was a last-of-the-ninth, gamewinning, pennant-winning home run by New York Giants outfielder Bobby Thomson off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca on October 3, 1951. The official attendance of the game was 34,320. At one point in the 1960s there was an estimate that over half a million people were saying they were sitting in the stands when Thompson slammed
Branca’s pitch into the Polo Grounds stands. Liars? I guess you can say that those people who pretended to be at the game, or those people who claimed that they were in the stands for Michael Jordan’s last basketball game, or those hundreds of thousands who said they bet on and watched in person as Secretariat took a 31-length lead in “The Belmont” were not telling the truth. People exaggerate and build up their participation in sports and war and business.

As a good friend of mine said yesterday, “They embellish.” Well, the dictionary says “embellish” is “to make an account more interesting by inventing or exaggerating details.” I embellish. You embellish. We all embellish. Did you ever meet a person who tells you he didn’t come from a “tough” neighborhood? How about a wealthy man who admits he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth? All the wealthy people I know can’t wait to tell you how they were poor and they climbed up by their bootstraps. Then you find out they went to boarding school and then went on to the best colleges on their parents’ dime. A story gets more dramatic when the person who’s telling the story pads his or her part. Brian Williams padded his part once, maybe twice, and now he’s in trouble. Here’s what I know about Brian Williams: To begin with, he’s not a friend. He’s an acquaintance. He is a funny guy – he has a great sense of humor. I mean genuinely funny. You’ve seen him cutting up with Jon Stewart or joking on “Saturday Night Live,” as a guest with Fallon and Letterman. He’s generous with his time and he’s been there for many a good cause. You call on him and he shows up. I was interviewed by him about advertising five or six times back when he was anchor and managing editor of “The News With Brian Williams” on MSNBC and CNBC.I found him to be tough, funny and fair as an interviewer. That’s all you look for.
IN THE NEWS
Brian Williams went to Afghanistan and Iraq and that took a certain amount of bravery. A lot of people who are hollering for his scalp wouldn’t put themselves in that danger. I know I wouldn’t go to those places unless I was drafted. He is the most highly decorated evening news anchor of the modern era. He has received 11 Edward R. Murrow Awards, 12 Emmy Awards, the duPont-Columbia University Award, the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism and the industry’s highest honor, the George Foster Peabody Award. That’s the plus side for me. On the negative side: Brian Williams admitted he lied and he was not aboard a helicopter hit and forced down by RPG fire during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. The helicopter that landed an hour before Williams’ craft had been hit. Williams had been telling the story for years. Williams also claimed that during his coverage of Katrina he saw a corpse float by his hotel in the French Quarter. Now, there were plenty of corpses floating in the city that day, but maybe he embellished what he saw. If he exaggerated in the past he’s paying for it now. He’s not the first nor will he be the last public figure to get called for telling a tall tale. According to Yahoo News, thenpresidential candidate Hillary Clinton recalled having to run from sniper fire with her daughter, Chelsea, upon arriving in war-torn Bosnia in 1996. It wasn’t long before video of the Bosnia trip was unearthed to counter Clinton’s account. “I remember landing under sniper fire,” Clinton had said of the Bosnia trip during a campaign speech in Washington. “There was supposed to be some kind of greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.” Yet the video showed a much calmer version of events, with Clinton and her daughter walking from their plane to a tension-free ceremony on the tarmac. When confronted with the inconsistencies, Clinton said: “So I made a mistake. That happens. It proves I’m human.” A lot of people reading this who won’t forgive Brian Williams are planning to vote for Hillary Clinton. They want to make her the next President of the United States. They don’t want Brian Williams to read them the news of her election off of a teleprompter. Something’s wrong when we vote for a presidential candidate who lied but condemn a newscaster who padded his part. He didn’t change the news. He just reported it, accurately. He deserves another chance. If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@dfjp.com.

THIS IS
SCIENCE FICTION. It’s the true story of a patient whose heart had stopped, and the doctors who never gave up on her. You can’t make up a story like Tara Funk’s. She arrived in the St. Francis ER with a ruptured aorta. If that weren’t bad enough, she immediately went into cardiac arrest. Doctors knew they only had seconds to react. They opened her chest and massaged her heart, miraculously they brought Tara back right there in the Emergency Room. They continued with extensive cardiothoracic surgery in the operating room to repair the aorta. They saved Tara’s life. As Tara says, “They never gave up on me.” As one of our surgeons says, “That’s what St. Francis is all about.”

impact the Second District especially hard. I intend to build upon Jay Schneiderman’s work, however it is time for fresh leadership for the South Fork.” A full time East Ender for the last two years, Goodman came out east for the first time when he was just four days old – “My grandparents lived here “ -- he said on Monday. He’s been a part time resident all his life. Goodman is described as “an accomplished business and political leader” in the release heralding his bid for office. He is Chairman of Forward Long Island, a Political Action Committee which played a prominent role in a number of state races in the 2014 election, and is a member of the Springs Community Advisory Council, the Maidstone Gun Club, and other civic and fraternal groups. With extensive experience building businesses and creating jobs, especially in the aerospace and defense sectors, Goodman has worked to secure investments in companies that provide lifesaving technologies to the military, including armor, communications, and intelligence. and spend upwards of $200,000 on this race, a figure Goodman said “will ensure we can defeat the forces of the status-quo, effectively organize, aggressively challenge any potential opponent, and secure victory in November.” The Campaign announced that Goodman has secured the strong support of key town and county Republican leaders and committee members. In addition to seeking the Republican nomination, Goodman will also seek cross-party endorsement on the Conservative and Independence lines. “All four committees in the district (EH, SH, Brookhaven, and Shelter Island) -- as well as the County GOP -- have been very supportive of my candidacy, and believe I have what it takes to win the seat,” he said Sunday via email. “They believe that my focus on fiscal matters -- more than anything else -- will resonate, and that I have the drive and temperament to be a highly effective candidate -- and Legislator.” “Amos is the ideal candidate for this district, able to connect with voters and effectively articulate the fiscally responsibly principles we stand for,” County GOP chair

“My team and I have what it takes to execute a high-caliber, winning campaign, able to mobilize turnout and create momentum for Town candidates.” So said Springs resident Amos Goodman, who this week announced his candidacy for the South Fork seat on the Suffolk County Legislature. If he’s successful in his campaign, Goodman will become the first openly gay Republican on the legislature. After a dozen years, Jay Schneiderman will be stepping away from the horseshoe at the end of this year due to term limits. Goodman is the first to announce an effort to claim the seat. “I am thrilled to announce my candidacy for the Legislature at this critical time for Suffolk County -- and for the South Fork. We deserve effective and strong representation a t t h e C o u n t y, a n d a l e a d e r willing to fight for our residents and our businesses,” he said in a release Sunday. “I won’t allow our Towns and residents to be further imperiled by our County Government’s reckless spending. John Jay LaValle said. “His proven private sector experience and engaging personality make him a highly impressive, and formidable, candidate. I am confident he has what it takes to win, and to be a strong leader in the Legislature. I am proud to endorse his candidacy.” Southampton Town Republican Committee Chair William Wright added, “Amos just gets it. He will be a tremendous asset to our potential slate of candidates, and will be the fighter Southampton needs in Hauppauge.” And East Hampton GOP Chairman Tom Knobel offered, “I am honored that someone of Amos’s caliber is willing to come forward and serve our community. He will make a highly effective Legislator.” East Hampton Republicans were poised to host their formal screening for legislative candidates tonight, with other districts scheduling theirs later in the season. Goodman hasn’t screened before the EH GOP yet, but has met with many individuals. “I don’t imagine you’d see such strong statements from LaValle, Knobel, and Wright if they had doubts about the screenings. That said, I take nothing for granted and am looking forward to earning the support of every committee member -- and voter,” he said. “The County convention is not until May, when I expect to formally receive the nomination. I am not aware of any challengers from inside the GOP, but of course anything is possible.” The Second Legislative District spans a wide area of Eastern Suffolk County, including the entirety of the Towns of the Southampton, East Hampton, Shelter Island, and a portion of Brookhaven. Democrats have yet to hint at their hopefuls, and tend to host candidate screenings later in the year. So far, no one has formally announced a bid, though the name of another Springs resident, Zach Cohen, has been bandied. Whoever comes forward, Goodman says he’s ready. “This election will be about the issues, and you can expect us debate whomever emerges as the Democratic nominee forcefully, but fairly,” he concluded.

RICK’S SPACE Lying Liars And The Lying Lies They Lie I don’t tell lies. OK, maybe in this column I occasionally exaggerate but that is only for effect. That’s not to say I wouldn’t be a good liar. On those rare occasions when I am forced to tell a fib I do so with ruthless efficiency. My lies are totally believable, and impossible to prove false. That’s the key: if you’re going to lie (especially on the witness stand) you better be damn sure no one can disprove you. Consider Brian Williams, the anchor of “NBC Nightly News.” (Notice I didn’t say FOX News, folks.) Williams was in Iraq in a Chinook Helicopter during the invasion of Iraq

on March 24, 2003 when his copter was hit with a rocket-propelled grenade and forced to crash land. How do we know this? Because Williams has said so, many times, as recently as two weeks ago. Apparently, we are to embrace Williams as a fearless reporter because he has experienced the horrors of war first hand. Except there is one big oopsie. It never happened. It’s complete bullshit. Stars and Stripes newspaper found out that Williams arrived at the scene of the fallen helicopter almost an hour after the crash. He wasn’t on it. The troops who were said he wasn’t on
it. The folks on the second helicopter acknowledged Williams arrived with them. When confronted the other day Williams hemmed and hawed: “I don’t know what screwed up in my mind that caused me to conflate one aircraft with another,” he said. Conflate? What is “conflate?” It sounds like a word that means passing gas. Let me put this another way. If you have sex with say, Beyoncé, you know about it. There ain’t no conflating going on afterwards. Brian: you lied! But no, that’s not the word he used. “I feel terrible about making this mistake,” he wrote on Facebook. No, Brian, it wasn’t a mistake. A mistake is when you are five and make a little wee-wee in your undies. “I have no desire to fictionalize my experience and no need to dramatize events,” he wrote. Oh. He just conflates stuff up. He attributed the whole thing

No bonus is paid if the account balance is less than $2,500 on the anniversary date. Additional deposits during a given anniversary period do not affect the bonus interest payment. Deposits made to the account on any anniversary date will be used to calculate the lowest account balance for the next anniversary period. Simple interest rate bonus is subject to change at any time after first anniversary date of account opening. Hypothetical example of how bonus works: Assume an account is opened on January 12, 2015 for $50,000. A $10,000 withdrawal is made on July 12, 2015. No other withdrawals are made prior to the January 12, 2016 anniversary date. The low balance is now $40,000, so $100 in bonus interest will be paid on January 12, 2016.

to the “fog of his memory from 12 years ago.” Brian, oh Brian, you big conflating wee-wee head! Then there is Steve Kroft, a correspondent of “60 Minutes” on CBS (No, not FOX News!) The great journalist who grilled hard line politicos on the air, breaking them down and getting the truth out of them, no matter how embarrassing. (Except that time when he interviewed President Obama, when he was so fawning and cloying that he appeared to be on the verge of curtseying.) The Great Liberal, who has a house on North Haven, made it known in no uncertain terms that he has nothing but distaste for anyone he deems to be racially insensitive. Yes, this respected journalist holds his standards high, and that goes for his personal life as well, right? After all, he publically admonished Clinton for the president’s womanizing ways. Then he got caught with his pants down. Kroft reportedly explained away a three-year affair with a much younger woman by saying he was stuck in a “sexless marriage.” And Bill Clinton wasn’t? Now some may consider Kroft a goodlooking man if you like that chiseled, swollen head look that is so prevalent in older men on TV (I call it the “Shatner”). To me his shriveled skin looks like the leather on my Minnie Minoso 1959 baseball glove. If Kroft were married to me you can be quite certain it would be a sexless marriage – I’d rather make it with Minnie. According to numerous published reports, it turns out Kroft has been having a steamy affair replete with racy cell phone photos and nasty texts including one he sent that reportedly read, “I want to eat your pudding.” I can only hope this was for a Food Network special. One text from Kroft reportedly warned the woman, who’s black, “don’t dress like Beyoncé.” Hmmmm. What’s wrong with Beyoncé? Stevie, oh Stevie. Let me explain something to you. When you wrote that you probably didn’t realize – and still don’t – that was a racially charged insult. You were implying Beyoncé looks like a cheap ho. The other woman, Lisan Goines, must have a great sense of humor though. She reportedly texted Kroft that she was going to “wear him out.” Oh, OK. I mean, this babbling fool is 69. How long does that take? Forget 60 minutes. My vote would be he’d finish in 60 seconds. In his defense tough, if a woman dressed like Beyoncé seduced me I’d be lucky to last 30 seconds - but I digress. Steve, lose that holier than thou crap, oil that face of yours, and try to refrain from judging others in the future. By the way, the story was originally reported by the New York Post – journalists we can trust!

The Situation In Westhampton Beach We certainly understand the unrest in Westhampton Beach. Mayor Maria Moore, who was elected last year as a reform candidate, has ruffled some feathers with her plan to hire a police commissioner. Originally she looked at disbanding the force altogether and contracting with Southampton Town for services. We favored that option – the scandal plagued village police have been making unwelcome news for far too long, and the entrenched police chief making far too much money. He resigned after Moore was elected. The Southampton option fell through, and the village board then decided to hire an inhouse candidate, Lt. Trevor Gonce, but hire a commissioner who would be Gonce’s superior. The logical thing, it would seem, would be support Gonce, or, if the feeling is he needs supervision, don’t hire him to begin with. The fact that the board has retreated to executive session to discuss this further hasn’t won points with the public, either. It is the norm to discuss personnel matters behind closed doors, and we suspect Moore knows exactly what she wants to accomplish and there is a great deal of legalese to be considered. Westhampton Beach desperately needed reform. Moore was put in place to get the ball rolling. She needs more time to implement her plans. Patience is urged.

Humanely Controlling Deer? Dear Editor, When I read your editorial “An Inhumane Embarrassment,” I was struck by the parallel of how embarrassing this editorial was not only for your publication given the obvious lack of research, but also for the residents of the Village of East Hampton. As the President of Wildlife Rescue, Inc., an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping people find humane solutions for co-existing with wildlife, I have up close and personal knowledge of Non-Lethal HUMANE Deer Sterilization Spaying. In 2011, Wildlife Rescue launched the State of Maryland’s first ever non-lethal deer sterilization program to reduce over abundant deer in an open suburban residential neighborhood. This was after many years of researching non-lethal
methods of deer population control and we chose deer sterilization as the most effective tool available for humanely controlling deer populations. We hired Dr. Anthony DeNicola, Ph.D., of White Buffalo, Inc. who is conducting your program to design and implement our program. We have now worked with him closely as the program has progressed over the past four years. Our program and its results, I can only describe as exceeding all our expectations and very successful from both a humane aspect and deer population control. Our deer sterilization/spay program results: Surgical mortality rate is less than 1 percent we have never lost a doe from surgery or infection! Browsing has been reduced because just like a pregnant woman eats more, so does a pregnant deer. The additional nutritional requirement of both 7 months of pregnancy and nursing fawns for 3 more months each and every year are eliminated.
East Hampton Airport The town board has taken steps to curtail the god-awful din caused by a parade of helicopters during peak hours in the summer, and the entire East End is happy about that. There is cause for concern, though. Legal challenges have already been mounted, and costs will balloon. Though the studies that preceded the town board action seem on the surface to be thorough, the cost analysis is filled with more holes than the aging runways. There is no way the airport can be self-sustaining. There is no way the millions in repairs that are needed now and will be needed in the future can be accomplished using airport revenue. When we wrestled control of the airport from the FAA we also said goodbye to the millions of dollars the agency infused into the infrastructure. The entire basis of the plan, that increased fees assessed on airport users will yield the desired revenue, is fatally flawed: with the helicopter bans comes a steep decline in users. In other words, you can charge $10 for a movie and fill 100 seats and make $1000. If you charge $20 and only 20 people come you lose $600. The costs of keeping up the runways, the decreased usage, and astronomical legal fees all add up to one thing: taxpayers will have to make up the shortfall. We suspect the current town airport is well aware that the future is going to surely bring a cash crunch, but is willing to punt the matter to future boards. For now, if the copter noise is indeed held in check this summer, there won’t be many people complaining.
Deer/vehicle collisions have been reduced because spayed does do not go into heat, so bucks do not chase them. Even though they still reside in the community, they serve as infertile placeholders who help keep out new deer. If anyone wants to learn more about each phase of our project, they can go to: www.wildliferescueinc.org Since any deer that is spayed or vaccinated with either PZP or GonaCon has to be immobilized, tagged and revaccinated again and again. We believe that the one time spaying is more effective and also easier on the deer long term because they never have to be handled again. I will admit that some of us, as individuals who have devoted ourselves to animal welfare, were initially very hesitant to work with Dr. DeNicola because of his reputation as a sharpshooter. After speaking with and then meeting with him, he overcame our reluctance and Dr. DeNicola now has our total respect as a wildlife biologist who understands deer and someone who has always treated our
deer very humanely. In fact everyone who works with him and everyone who has volunteered on our project has always treated our deer with the utmost care and compassion. The residents of the Village of East Hampton are incredibly fortunate that your Village of East Hampton Board and the Village Preservation Society of East Hampton had the foresight and courage to not follow the failures of other communities who made the mistake of just killing deer. In the past, farmers drowned kittens to keep down the cat population. We no longer use such barbaric ways to control birth rates, and now spaying cats is common practice. Why is it too much to ask that we move forward as a modern humane society when it comes to deer? ENID FEINBERG Editors Note: You do not speak for the residents of our community, and we resent your charge that because we disagree with this barbaric and torturous method Continued on Page 14.

of birth control that we haven’t done our homework. Your Maryland-based organization is supposedly, “dedicated to alleviating the suffering of sick injured and orphaned animals.” Yet The Hartford Courant called Dr. DeNicola, “a professional and proficient deer-killer” and reported by his own count he has killed 10,000 or more deer. Is that consistent with your mission statement? There are no fences around East Hampton Village: deer wander in and out, perhaps a thousand or more each year. Experts at Cornell University said where immigration is present the effectiveness of your program is neutralized. Your contention that the surgical mortality rate is less than one percent is a red herring; it is impossible to measure the longer term effects from the surgery, particularly second-hand infections. Contrary to your claim, a Cornell University Study in 2012 “Human–Wildlife Interactions 6(2):273–282, Fall 2012” found “significantly higher deer–vehicle collision mortality rates when compared to a control group of fertile females.” The study concluded: “Female deer receiving surgery will experience repeated estrous cycles during winter and spring. Consequently, females may attract more bucks into their home range, which may increase deer-vehicle collision or rubbing damage to valuable ornamental plantings.” In addition, “the hormonal or physiological effects of surgical ovariectomies remain unclear.” Several field studies have proven in areas where there are “treated” females there is an increased reproduction rate in untreated females. In other words, your group and Dr. DeNicola did not present these facts to our village leaders, but only told them what you

Should Brian Williams’ leave of absence from NBC News be permanent? Betsy Ruth I’m not sure. But the situation doesn’t surprise me. My impression of Brian Williams was that he always embroidered and embellished his stories a bit. I’m not sure if his stepping down should be permanent. But he shouldn’t remain as one of the heads of NBC News. Michael Wusi I’m conflicted. I like him. But if his own personal stories become part of the news that’s not good. Overall, I wonder how much of the news is truthful. Fox News? Nothing is true. But he should not be making things up that aren’t true. There’s no excuse for that. Joe Lombardi Definitely not. He’s a great reporter. And he has been in the business for so many years. You can’t remember every single thing that happens in all that time. I think we should just get on with life. David Zazula I like Brian Williams. He used to have a ton of credibility. And it’s all about credibility and honesty in the news business. So if he loses that I don’t know how he can continue. It’s hard to predict what the future holds for him or should hold for him.

Dear Rick, What is an oligarchy? According to Webster, “a government in which a small group exercises control especially for corrupt and selfish purposes.” What would an oligarchy need to do to maintain or increase their control? To mention just a basic few: -Keep wages low and prevent a rise in the minimum wage. -Inhibit the ability for the people to
vote. -Deny Unemployment Insurance. -Cut Food Stamps for the needy. -Lower the taxes for the uber wealthy and corporations, placing tax burden on the poor and middle class. Thus far, two of our three branches of government are of an allegarc-ical mentality and have done whatever possible to quash the power of the poor and middle class while ever increasing that of the wealthiest. “Trickle Down” has translated to tinkled on. If the third branch of our government is lost in 2016, the very foundation of what once was the beacon of freedom and equality is threatened to crumble, reminiscent of the late 1800’s Robber Barons. An ominous precursor; the High Lords of the oligarchy, the Koch network, will be spending near one billion dollars in the upcoming 2016 election. That is three times what they invested to buy last fall’s previous election. NICHOLAS ZIZELIS

Garbage Galore By Emily Toy
Southampton Town’s got garbage. And most of it town officials don’t even know about. Director of Municpal Works Christine Fetten met with the town board last Thursday to discuss potential improvements to the town’s waste management system. “The main change is the permitting and tracking of private carters,” said Councilwoman Bridget Fleming. “Eighty five percent of solid waste is hauled off by private carters.” With a revised code, Fetten said, private carters would be required to have application forms, annual update forms, and be permitted in the respective hamlet via written certificates. Cost for annual permits for private carters would be $500 for the first truck, with each following truck from the carter company costing $50. Fetten said the goal of revising the old code would allow for compliance with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation mandates. “The DEC requires annual reports from transfer stations,” she said. “Currently, we don’t have a true value of what’s being moved out. This step will provide more details. It will also work to employ the best management, and will seek to protect surface waters and our
drinking waters.” Fetten added the current code has a lot of outdated past practices referenced in it. Sag Harbor Village Mayor Brian Gilbride was on hand at Thursday’s work session, in part to speak on behalf of Emil Norsic & Son, a prominent garbage removal service based out of Southampton. “For a company like Skip’s [Norsic], he has to have a lot of vehicles because we transport everything out of town,” Gilbride said. “There’s no service provided by the town. I understand what the town is trying to achieve, I just know there seems to be some difference in opinion. I know Skip

has conveyed that the solid waste committee should have had a little more input. I think there should be a little more discussion.” “Every town is required to track what is going on,” Fetten said. “We’re [the Town of Southampton] uniquely different, we don’t have curbside garbage districts. Private carters don’t necessarily have to report, but transfer stations have to report on annual basis.” Gilbride said the Norsic company reports information on what is being picked up and moved to the local transfer stations, who are then required to report those numbers to the state. Councilwoman Christine Scalera expressed concern over how accurate those amounts are, noting how said reported figures may be “duplicative.” “I don’t want to create unneeded

administrative time and expense for us if it’s not necessary,” she said. Fleming said a public hearing would be set for March 10. “We’ll get this draft on the table then bring the Solid Waste Committee in,” she said. Fleming reminded since only 15 percent of the town’s waste is reported, that’s why “it is so hard to get a handle on it.” “We don’t have any idea on what they’re taking,” Fleming said of the private carters. “It’s important to know what’s happening these 140 square miles of Southamtpon Town. We have this exploding population during the summer season. That’s different than places receiving garbage from here. We need to know who’s operating in our town. Once we have permits in place we can start communicating through that.”

Died In The Line Of Duty With heavy hearts the Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance Corps announced the line of duty death of Paramedic Ralph Oswald on Monday. Just before 9 AM that day, Paramedic Oswald, 64, responded to a call for an unresponsive male patient. While providing emergency medical assessment on the patient, Paramedic Oswald stated to his crew that he was experiencing distress, whereupon he immediately collapsed in cardiac arrest. Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance along with Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded and transported Paramedic Oswald to Southampton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after failed pre-hospital and in-hospital resuscitative efforts. Funeral arrangements are pending.

To Break The Cycle Teen dating violence is a growing epidemic. One in three teens in the U.S. will experience physical, sexual or emotional abuse by someone they are in a relationship with before they become adults. Of those teens, more than two thirds will never report that abuse to an adult. I t ’ s N a t i o n a l Te e n D a t i n g Violence Prevention and Awareness Month and The Retreat is raising awareness and focusing efforts on breaking the cycle of violence by providing information about the availability of services and the importance of healthy relationships to young victims, their families, and their communities. The Retreat runs the Teen Leadership Project, an opportunity for teenagers from East End schools to work together while learning about violence prevention and promoting awareness and safety in
the community. Throughout the month of February, Retreat Teen Leaders have lined up events across the East End to raise awareness of this growing epidemic. Last week Shelter Island High School basketball against Pierson held a “Spirit Night to acknowledge Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness month. On Monday, Retreat Teen Leaders were slated to visit the Youth Court program in Hampton Bays. On Friday, students will host a Retreat table at One Billion Rising, an international flash mob event at Dodds and Eder in Sag Harbor. On February 28, youth will manage an outreach table at HarborFrost in Sag Harbor. “We are very excited that our Teen Leaders are active at so many events across the East End. Promoting respect and healthy
relationships is the main goal of the program, said Helen AtkinsonBarnes, The Retreat’s Education Manager. “Year after year, I am blown away by the dedication our students have to encouraging dialogues about abuse.

Anti-Bias Outreach
Last fall the East Hampton Town Anti-Bias Task Force brainstormed ways to reach out to the community. Here’s what they’ve got on tap in the coming weeks. On Friday, February 27, at LTV Studios on Industrial Road in Wainscott the Academy Award-winning documentary, Mighty Times: The Children’s March will be presented, starting at 7 PM. The film tells the story of the heroic young people of Birmingham, Alabama, who braved arrest, fire hoses, and police dogs in 1963 to march for justice during the Civil Rights Movement. The Anti-Bias Task Force sponsored a short film student contest and will screen local films on February 27 and March 6 during their Movie Nights. On Friday, March 6, same time, same place, the Anti-Bias Task Force presents the Academy Award winning documentary, A Time for Justice. Narrated by Civil Rights leader Julian Bond and featuring Congressman John Lewis, the film presents a short history of the Civil Rights Movement through historical footage of dramatic moments. Following each of these movie showings, Reverend Katrina Foster will lead a panel discussion concerning the film’s subjects and their relationship to today’s society. Baked delights and refreshments will be served, courtesy of an Anti-Bias Task Force member and outstanding home baker. They are not to be missed.

Who’s Going To Win The Oscars? J.K. Simmons in Whiplash. By Miles X. Logan & Emily Toy
A few weeks ago the race for the Best Picture Oscar was viewed by experts as a two-horse race; Boyhood, the Golden Globe winner and Birdman, which captured the Screen Actors Guild top prize. Since then, American Sniper has emerged not only as a box office
smash but as a call to arms: it’s the patriotic thing to take out any terrorist -- man, woman, or child -- who would threaten the American way. Even Wes Anderson’s quirky The Grand Budapest Hotel has enjoyed a rebirth, giving the film a legitimate puncher’s chance. Indy Picks: Logan: It’s still a two horse race: I’m betting Birdman, with its superior cast and more compelling storyline, will nose out Boyhood. Toy: It’s one of the closest Best Picture races in decades, but the fact the audience gets to see a little boy, literally, grow up before their eyes takes it. Boyhood will win, but Birdman should. Best Director: Richard Lin-
klater’s ambitious project: to chart a family over a dozen years made movie history. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s work in Birdman is difficult to ignore. Anderson is a cult favorite. Logan: Linklater wins based on the sheer girth of the project. Toy: Linklater. Best Supporting Actress could be considered the most competitive category, even with Meryl Streep (Into The Woods) in the mix. Keira Knightly (The Imitation Game) and Emma Stone (Birdman) were both brilliant. Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) captured the SAG and Golden Globe awards. Logan: Arquette completes the trifecta.

Patricia Arquette in Boyhood.
Toy: This is the role she’ll be remembered for. It’s in the bag for Arquette. Best Supporting Actor: This award, given early on in the show, will be a harbinger of things to come. If Ethan Hawke wins for Boyhood, look for that film to sweep the awards. Edward Norton (Birdman) was the early favorite. Mark Ruffalo was brilliant in Foxcatcher, but J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) swept the other awards. Robert Duvall is the sentimental favorite. Logan: Simmons gets rewarded for a lifetime of excellent work. Toy: Would love to see the great character actor Simmons win, and he should. Norton’s the only one who could give him a run for his money. Best Actress: Now with her fifth Oscar nomination under her belt, Julianne Moore is the overwhelming favorite for her breathtaking performance in Still Alice. Reese Witherspoon won rave reviews for Wild. Felicity Jones received critical acclaim in The Theory Of Everything. Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night) is a possible upsetter. Logan: The stars are aligned for Moore. Toy: It could be argued Moore should have received her Oscar years ago. There’ll be no argument come Oscar night. She should and will get the gold. Best Actor: This is the most interesting of the races: Michael Keaton was considered a lock after taking home the Golden Globe but Eddie Redmayne (The Theory Of Everything) was the surprise choice of SAG. Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) is a comer, and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) turned in a top-notch performance. Even Steve Carell (Foxcatcher) has his supporters. Logan: Redmayne noses out Keaton. Toy: Keaton’s performance made us uncomfortable, empathetic, unsure, nervous, and question our very own existence. He should be rewarded, not only for his gutwrenching performance, but also for a career of memorable and magnificent work.

Locals Look For An East End Miracle
By Rick Murphy
Imagine, four East End teams holding Suffolk County Boys Basketball Championship trophies simultaneously. It’s never been done before but a realistic scenario exists this year. Bridgehampton is expected to win the County Class D title. Pierson is expected to contend for the Class C title, with Stony Brook the main competition. Southampton is the co-favorite to win the Class B title along with Babylon – the two split in two encounters during the regular season. In Class A, East Hampton figures to be the fourth seed – the brackets haven’t been set as of this writing – but the Bonackers have beaten two of the other contenders,
★
Bayport/Blue Point and Shoreham/ Wading River. If the perfect scenario developed, all four of the local schools would represent Suffolk in their respective classes in the New York State Championship tourney. In addition, though, they could all wind up playing each other: here’s how it works: Bridgehampton will play the winner of the Class C tournament for the CD title. The winner plays for the BCD championship. The winner of that game plays for the Suffolk Small Schools title (ABCD). There’s more – the winner of that game plays the Class AA winner for the overall Suffolk title, and the winner of that game plays the

Nassau County overall champion for the Long Island overall title. The last time two East End schools met for the overall Suffolk title was 1968. Pierson and Southampton, fierce rivals, were undefeated when they met during the regular season, and Southampton prevailed. Neither team lost again, and the rematch was set in the County Championship game. Foots Walker, who went on the play in the NBA, led Southampton. Pier s o n wa s c o a c hed by the legendary Ed Petrie, who went on to break the record for most coaching wins in New York State; he took over at East Hampton a couple years later. The Whalers were led by the county scoring leader Bob Vacca, who is now -- talk about a small world -- assistant coach at East Hampton. The NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks drafted Vacca but an elbow injury ended his career. Southampton won the game and went on to set a state record with 68 straight wins. Bridgehampton, by the way, is the only Class D school to ever win the BCD title, having turned the trick, if memory serves, three times. Though the seedings haven’t been finalized as of this writing the dates of the county tournament

Hampton Bays Girls Bid For Title
Suffolk County schools were anxiously awaiting the Section XI girls’ county tournaments as The Independent went to press. Hampton Bays doesn’t have to sweat it out. The Lady Baymen, by virtue of their League VII title, have earned the top seed in the Class B tournament. Hampton Bays went 9-1 in the league, finished with a 16-2 overall record. It appears Hampton Bays will play Monday at home at a time to be announced. The final is slated for February 21. Riverhead, competing in League III, compiled a tough 10-4 record against Class AA teams and is headed into the playoffs; the Waves will probably have to settle for a seven or eight seed. The action will begin Tuesday.
