Route 114: Good To Fair? By Kitty Merrill

Ask Assemblyman Fred Thiele if the state has any plans to repair the potholes, washboards, cracks and crevices on Route 114 and his frustration is apparent, even via email. “I have written DOT [Department of Transportation] twice about the condition of 114 since August 2014 requesting a repaving . . . especially between Stephen Hands Path and Montauk Highway,” he said. “They responded to the August letter in December and said that the road was ‘good to fair’ and that they had no immediate plans to repave.” On January 20, Thiele wrote them again. This time Senator Ken LaValle, East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell, and East Hampton Village Mayor Paul

Rickenbach also signed on. According to the assemblyman the local reps told DOT officials they were basically full of it, and, wrote Thiele, “They told us the same thing about Route 24 before the Barbara Tocci fatality, which ultimately they are paving now......” Tocci was killed in a head on crash on SR 24 on January 16, 2014. The driver of the PSEG truck that hit her was arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide. He’s accused of texting while driving in the moments leading up to the crash. SR 24 wasn’t slated for repaving until 2018, but the DOT moved the schedule up after the fatal accident. Officials told Regional Director

Independent/James J. Mackin

Joseph Brown SR 114 between Stephen Hands Path and Montauk Highway is in worse condition, with a lower rating than 24, also known as Flanders Road, was when the decision was made to repave. The DOT rates roadway conditions each year. One needn’t be texting or otherwise distracted to fear an accident of the nature of a blowout or undercarriage damage near the train trestle on 114. The roadway under the bridge is riddled with cracks and potholes, with south of the trestles near Most Holy Trinity dubbed “pot hole city,” by one beleaguered motorist. To the north, it’s no better. Potholes, cracks and big pits are as prevalent as asphalt as one drives toward Sag Harbor. Local officials told the DOT that since the Village of East Hampton was planning to create a roundabout

at the 114/Toilsome intersection, it would be a good time to coordinate that work with a repaving project. That was in a January letter and, “They haven’t answered yet,” Thiele said. Last fall Thiele and LaValle pooled their 2014 Community Capital Assistance Program funds to give the village $700,000 towards the construction of the roundabout. The project is slated to include the construction of the roundabout with a raised, mountable and landscaped center island, plus improved drainage structures and enhanced pedestrian safety measures. Construction is expected to begin this year. Also this year, a paving project along Montauk Highway through the village and into Amagansett and ultimately Montauk is also slated to resume. Take deep breaths, drivers.

A LIBERAL’S SOLUTION ON HOW TO KEEP ISIS FROM CUTTING OFF OUR HEADS

Last week Marie Harf, a State Department deputy spokeswoman, insisted that helping ISIS jihadists find gainful employment was a better strategy than killing them. “We need to find them jobs. We need to get to the root cause of terrorism and that is poverty and lack of opportunity in the terrorist community,” she said. Jerry’s Ink is exclusively reporting that Ms. Harf, to back up her belief, traveled last week to Dabiq, Syria, the same place where a masked executioner – in a November video – showed the severed head of Peter Kassig, 26, an innocent American aid worker. Kassig “doesn’t have much to say,” said ISIS’s British-accented, black-robed executioner on the video, waving the head. Ms. Harf showed up in Dabiq with nine other State Department volunteers. Secretary of State John Kerry sent his regrets and said he wasn’t able to attend this historic meeting as he had urgent meetings in Paris, London, Berlin, Stockholm, Zurich, Prague, Rio, Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Dublin this week. But he assured MSNBC’s Chris Matthews that he and President Obama agreed

with, and had a great deal of confidence in, Ms. Harf. Kerry said that the liberal answer to someone waging a war on this country is always to declare a war on poverty. So far, he said, our war on poverty has worked almost as well as Nancy Reagan’s war on drugs. Here is an excerpt of Ms. Harf’s opening statement a day after she and her team arrived in Dabiq: Hello, on behalf of President Barack Obama and the State Department of the United States, I want to extend my wishes to our ISIS friends. First of all I want to say we come in a mission of peace and we are here to find out how the United States can help erase the poverty that has brought about this silly dispute between you and the rest of the world and caused you to cut off peoples’ heads, stone and rape women and kill and maim innocent children. But first I want to thank you for the wonderful orange jumpsuits you provided for all 10 of us yesterday. Mine fits perfectly and I find the color distinction between your adorable black robes and black face masks and our orange jumpsuits to be very “Halloween,” which is a holiday we celebrate where people

dress up in masks – pretty much like you all are dressed now, but they don’t carry knives like the ones you’re holding against our throats. But you can’t fool me with those knives – when I look at your eyes, even under that heavy black mask, your eyes look kind and friendly, and when you hold your knives right up against my neck like you’re doing now, your eyes take on a warm sparkle that shows deep down you’re good people and all this talk about a relig . . . religi . . . war is the kind of stuff the Republicans in my country are saying just to be mean. But know this, our President Obama is a good kind man and he knows relig . . .relig . . . I can’t say that word, has nothing to do with your lopping off all those heads. Our President pays no attention to relig . . relig . . . in fact he can’t say Isla . . . ma . . . ma . . . and relig . . . relig . . . in the same sentence either. But let me assure you he turns a deaf ear to all who are saying this is a relig . . . relig . . . relig . . . war. He sat in Reverend Wright’s church for years and didn’t hear a single thing. Even when Reverend Wright was preaching god damn America. But before I tell you all of the wonderful things that we are going to do for you, can anyone tell us what happened to three members of our group? We started with 10 of us but there are only seven of us now. It seems that last night three members of our party disappeared. That would be Mr. Harrington, Mr. Friendly and Mr. Benjamin. I might have been dreaming, but during the night I thought I heard Mr. Benjamin screaming something about not being Jewish. Well, I assure you that neither Mr. Benjamin nor anyone else in this group is Jewish and we are all, like the rest of the administration, dedicated toward restraining the influence of Jews like Benjamin Netanyahu, that notorious Israeli rabble-rouser. Because we at the State Department are aware that the day you take over most of the Middle East and establish a caliphate it would be just like Benjamin

Netanyahu to try to keep you from developing nuclear weapons for peaceful purposes. But enough about war. I’ve been sent here to talk to you about peace and jobs and opportunity. Please sir, you who are standing behind me and pulling my head back by pulling my hair . . . let me tell you, sir, your knife feels so cold next to my throat that it’s giving me chills. But I know, in my heart, you would never try to hurt a fellow human being who is here to help you. Let me tell you what the United States is prepared to give you. Jobs, jobs and more jobs. Money, money and more money. Plus, President Obama is ready to enroll you all into our free two-year community college program. And if some of you are feeling sick, who is to say that Obamacare is only for Americans? A few swipes with a pen, another Executive Order, and poof, all of you are covered. Plus, we are going to hire every member of ISIS who is unemployed (I guess you can call cutting off people’s heads a job of sorts) and pay them 10 dollars above the United States minimum wage for doing nothing. When we finish you are all invited to come to the United States and see what a blessing it is to live off other people’s money. Oh my god, is that my blood running down my neck? Ouch . . . ouch . . . please stop. Let me tell you the name of our program that will help you all rise from poverty into the good life. It’s going to be called “Operation Head Start.” OK, OK, maybe under these conditions that’s not such a good name. Glug . . . glug . . . glug . . . It is now reported that the man who put Ms. Harf and her ISIS theories to rest addressed his bloodthirsty ISIS compatriots and in a crisp British-accented voice said, “Let’s hear a chorus of ‘Allahu Akbar’ to thank god for having idiots running the government of the United States.” If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@ dfjp.com.

THIS IS

SCIENCE FICTION. It’s the true story of a patient whose heart had stopped, and the doctors who never gave up on her. You can’t make up a story like Tara Funk’s. She arrived in the St. Francis ER with a ruptured aorta. If that weren’t bad enough, she immediately went into cardiac arrest. Doctors knew they only had seconds to react. They opened her chest and massaged her heart, miraculously they brought Tara back right there in the Emergency Room. They continued with extensive cardiothoracic surgery in the operating room to repair the aorta. They saved Tara’s life. As Tara says, “They never gave up on me.” As one of our surgeons says, “That’s what St. Francis is all about.”

Grand Marshal McMichael O’Clark’s Getting Ready By Kitty Merrill

So what if he’s not really Irish. The leader of this year’s annual Am O’Gansett parade sponsored by the Amagansett Chamber of Commerce has a past that smacks of the old sod. This week Patty Sales, one of the originators of the world’s shortest parade and chamber VP, gave The Independent the exclusive scoop about Michael Clark’s checkered, and plaid, past. He’ll go by the name given to him by his adoptive family, McMichael O’Clark, as he leads the parade on March 14. Sales dipped her voice a bit when she informed infant O’Clark was left on the steps of a residence in an upisland Irish enclave “so many years ago.” The occupants of the abode, an unusual bunch, took him in and embraced him as one of their own. Given crusts of soda bread, near beer, and the occasional whipping,

“He was raised by nuns and leprechauns,” Sales whispered. The majestic hymns offered up by the nuns during endless hours in church combined with the lively ditties hummed by the Irish tricksters as they capered about the cold, dark hallways of the orphanage instilled a love of music in McMichael, not to mention shoemaking prowess. To this day, his establishment, Crossroads Music, located in the Amagansett Square, is a Mecca for musicians both young and old. Crossroads will be official parade headquarters for this, the seventh year for Am O’Gansett. The parade’s theme is fittingly “Music is the Message,” and there will be plenty to hear all through the village. In addition to a bounty of bands performing aboard floats, performances are on tap at Crossroads, Innersleeves Records,

and other venues in the hamlet on March 14. Can’t wait till March 14? This Friday night from 8 to 9:30 PM Crossroads and O’Clark play host to a Young People Rock showcase featuring the talent of Veronica Chumbi, Skylar Day and Red Tide. “Two gems of our town, Michael and Crossroads Music have been fostering, supporting and promoting local music for many years,” Joi Jackson Perle, chamber exec director pointed out this week. “He is the first person to pick up the phone and offer help no matter what the cause. He gives generously of his time and space to young musicians and looks out for the more seasoned ones.” Meeting exclusively with The Independent last weekend, O’Clark was humbled and honored to be selected Grand Marshal. Reflecting on last year’s honorees, the Amagansett School, he said, “I have many shoes to fill.” Tiny shoes, but still. “I’m not going to be your regular Grand Marshal,” O’Clark predicted. He vowed to take his duties seriously and advocate for the people of the hamlet, speaking out before the town board when need be. Examples of issues he may lobby for? Fur sinks in the new parking lot privy and life sentences for double parkers. He’s low key like that. “The parade is just a stepping stone for me and a 2016 presidential run,” O’Clark decreed. He’s keeping

his fingers crossed that the weather is seasonable on parade day. If not, he said, “I’ll just blame Obama.” Clad in one of the chamber’s brand new T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan “amagansett.calm,” Grand Marshal 2015 opined the Am O’Gansett Parade is “such a great event for the town. It shows people what Amagansett is all about – a quaint town with a lot of energy, and a place where you can relax.” A “highlight” of the familyfriendly parade, according to O’Clark, is the annual participation of the Quackenbush cesspool truck, which boasts marchers throwing tootsie rolls and toilet paper to spectators. Am O’Gansett is, he said, “a tongue and cheek take on parades . . . We’re a little different here in Amagansett.”

Be Heard In The Harbor By Emily Toy

Local organizations are banding together for a Speak Out at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor Sunday afternoon. Centered around teens, the event gives local youth an opportunity to say what they want to see in Sag Harbor, offering a dose of youthful energy to ring in spring this year. “The Speak Out is intended to let our youth be heard,” said Debbie Skinner, director of the Youth Resource Center of Sag Harbor. The non-profit agency has been offering several “out of school” recreational activities for the Sag Harbor community, including widely popular programs such as the summer beach program and the Pierson after school program. According to Skinner, Sag Harbor hosted two previous Speak Outs in 1997 and 2000, respectively. “Back then our kids were angry; they had nothing to do,” she said. “This is before SYS and RECenter, before the first local skateboard park at Red Creek and before the first Safe Summer Beach Program.” Nada Barry, founder of the Youth Committee, recalled, “We had quite a turnout, the first one filled the theater, and what the kids had to say made it clear that there needed to be

a change, that more resources had to be allocated to providing programs for our youth.” According to a press release on the Speak Out, Sunday’s event will be modeled after the previous Speak Outs. A panel of community leaders will listen on stage, an emcee will set the level of expectation and decorum and participants will be able to ask questions of the leaders or make statements about what they like and about what they want to see in Sag Harbor. As in years past, the Speak Out is recommended for young people, in eighth grade and up. It is a teen-only event; parents will not be invited into the theater. Skinner added those previous Speak Outs brought attention to the lack of recreational facilities for kids and it led to an increase of programs offered to children on the eastern end of Southampton Town and the western end of East Hampton Town. “This Speak Out came about in a Sag Harbor Coalition meeting, from a conversation community members were having about hosting an event that ‘empowered’ kids,” Skinner said. “It was suggested adults often have very little sense about what kids want or need, that perhaps kids could fill out a questionnaire or submit ideas.

NOT TOO IMPRESSED WITH YOUR SANITATION SERVICE? Emil Norsic & Son has been delivering quality and reliability on the East End since 1932.

I suggested we do another Speak Out and this event has been evolving from there.” Members of this year’s Speak Out panel are slated to include representatives from the Sag Harbor school district, the Mashashimuet Park board, the John Jermain Library, the Sag Harbor Police Department, Sag Harbor village government, and Bay Street Theater. Local youth organizations are also expected to toss their hats in the ring. Starting at 4 PM, the Sag Harbor Youth Committee will provide food and drink for the kids participating in the Speak Out. There’s no fee for participation. “Often times adults think they know what’s best for kids and what kids think or believe,” said Kym Laube, executive director of the Westhampton-based prevention

February 25, 2015

group, HUGS. “When we do not invite our youth to the table as partners and hear them out as we would any stakeholder, then there is a significant missed opportunity. This Speak Out is the beginning of what we hope to be a long-lasting conversation, one that includes youth as a driving force and as partners.”

Let Your Garden Grow

By Emily Toy

Last year, Southampton Town Councilwoman Christine Scalera spearheaded a community garden initiative at the David W. Crohan Community Center in Flanders, ultimately promoting healthier eating habits, a sense of community, and environmental awareness. And this year, it’s no different. Garden members are continuing to work hard to kick off the highly anticipated spring season. This year, according to a press

release from the town, garden members hope to double their efforts and perhaps donate a portion of the harvest to additional pantries. But, of course, in more ways than one, it takes a village. In order to reach said goal, the garden members are actively reaching out to local businesses and community organizations for sponsorship to help with this year’s growing season. Some of the items on the wish list include gardening supplies, plants, seeds, fertilizer,

soils, and mulch. So far, the garden has received support from the Colorful Gardens and Hampton Dry Goods. “One of my goals with this project was to integrate the community garden into the town’s parks, youth, and senior services programs, with an eye toward promoting intergenerational activity, with the garden as the focal point,” said Scalera, “Last year we accomplished that goal and produced over 300 pounds of vegetables and herbs which we donated to a local food pantry.” The remainder of last season’s harvest went to garden volunteers

There is no interest paid on balances of $0-$2,499. APYs disclosed effective as of January 6, 2015. APYs may be changed at any time at the Bank’s discretion. There is a minimum of $2,500 required to open the Apple Bank BONUS Savings account. $2,500 minimum daily balance is required to avoid $10 monthly maintenance fee. Fees may reduce earnings. Funds used to open this account cannot be from an existing Apple Bank account. Maximum deposit amount is $1,000,000 per household. **Special bonus feature: A .25% simple interest rate bonus will be paid on each anniversary date of account opening on the lowest balance for that year (anniversary date to anniversary date). No bonus is paid if the account balance is less than $2,500 on the anniversary date. Additional deposits during a given anniversary period do not affect the bonus interest payment. Deposits made to the account on any anniversary date will be used to calculate the lowest account balance for the next anniversary period. The bonus interest is calculated on the lowest balance on deposit from one anniversary date to the next anniversary date. Simple interest rate bonus is subject to change at any time after first anniversary date of account opening. Hypothetical example of how bonus works: Assume an account is opened on January 12, 2015 for $50,000. A $10,000 withdrawal is made on July 12, 2015. No other withdrawals are made prior to the January 12, 2016 anniversary date. The low balance is now $40,000, so $100 in bonus interest will be paid on January 12, 2016.

RICK’S SPACE The Afterlife Or, If You Ain’t Here After What I’m Here After

In the beginning we were content to give non-human things human qualities. Remember the dolls that cried real tears? You would pull a string in the back and the baby would say stuff like, “I love you mommy” even though “mommy” was only five or six. Some of the dolls had real hair to comb. I used to envision the day when my loved ones would be assured of my witty, urbane companionship. The Ricky Murphy Baby Doll would

be a spitting image of me when I was the darling of the nursery. Just pull the string in my back and I would say things like, “Will you clean the spittle off my chin?” and, “I think I wet my diaper!” These are the exact phrases I mutter now, the same playful back and forth banter that endears me to all my co-workers at The Independent. Of course, cryonics takes it to the next level. We are not talking about a life-like doll that wets the diaper.

Ted Williams wanted more than just his hair to survive him. He hatched an elaborate scheme in search of immortality. Ted was a great baseball player. He was the “The Splendid Splinter,” “Teddy Ballgame,” “The Thumper” and “The Kid.” He led the world in nicknames. I used to like to mix them up: “Kid Teddy,” which sounded like a boxer, “Splendid Thumper” and the ever-catchy “The The” for example. When Ted died on July 5, 2002 the plan he conceived was executed. His body was whisked off to a nondescript gray stucco building in Scottsdale that housed the Alcor Life Extension Foundation: Ted Williams was about to become “The Immortal Splinter,” (or, if you prefer, “The Eternal Thumper”). According to “The Kid: The Immortal Life of Ted Williams” The Splinter’s (Thumper’s) frozen body

was “placed on the operating table, face up. Attendants quickly pressed fresh bags of ice against his skin, especially around the head, neck and groin.” This caused Teddy’s manhood to shrink noticeably. Then they removed the Splinter’s head, immediately creating yet another nickname, “The Headless Shrinking Kid.” Then they put the head in a frozen drawer, the temperature set at minus 321 degrees. For this Williams paid $120,000. Later CBS News reported that at one point the freezer malfunctioned and Ted’s head was taken out and placed (I’m not making this up) upside down on a tuna can to stop it from rolling off the table (“The Splendid Tuna Can Head”). Then they couldn’t get the can off, so a worker took a couple whacks at it with a monkey wrench and sent it flying, thus thumping the Thumper. Unless it was Brian Williams doing the reporting, the point of the news piece was that Alcor and cryonics were a farce. An author of a book about the company claimed they would go so far as to “help along” people who were dying so they could freeze them quicker. This is apparently what happened to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. As of this writing, Ted Williams is still dead, but our quest to communicate from beyond the g r a v e c o n t i n u e s . This is only a first step, inventors assured. Soon, computer chips will allow sophisticated imagery to mimic the thoughts and actions of the deceased. And that is how I am going to go out. My loved ones (all one of them) won’t grieve my loss because I will always be there for them. I can see it now. Karen, kneeling at my gravesite (undoubtedly with some swarthy 21 year old Latin dancer named Ricardo). “Oh Rick, I miss you so, sob, sob.” “I will always be here,” I reply smiling. “Rick, you know it costs $500 a month to keep your headstone online?” “Yes, my darling, I remember in death as I did in life.” “Well, Ricardo here wants a new Mustang so . . .” What if maybe Williams was on to something? Maybe he wakes up someday. He would start talking and the mystery of the afterlife would be revealed. He would say, in that famous voice of his, “Where is my freaking head? Why is my groin so numb? Do I smell tunafish?”

Much has been made of a court case currently before the U.S. Supreme Court that will decide the future of the Affordable Care Act, but even if the government can prevail in court there are clear signals that Obamacare will not survive much longer. This isn’t good news for millions of children and poor Americans who the plan was created for, but the Obama administration has only itself to blame should the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, go under. The court case on the surface is rather clear-cut: millions of Americans who buy their health plans through the federal exchange receive subsidies from the states where they live. More than a few legal scholars believe this is unconstitutional and should be stricken from the law. If the Supreme Court does indeed bar subsidies for people in 34 states, the law will unravel and the number of uninsured will soar. Unfortunately, the damage done to Medicare, and the crippling of Medicare Plus done by the administration to help pay for Obamacare can’t be undone. This is but one example of the many problems that plague Obamacare, all of which should have been vetted before the law was pushed through Congress and passed. Blame the Obama administration for its arrogance then and the deceit being willfully fostered on the American people now. According to Forbes the White House recently boasted, “About 11.4 million [previously uninsured people] are signed up for private health coverage through Obamacare’s insurance exchanges.”

It’s Up To Us

Dear Editor, The U.S. Advisory Panel on Dietary Guidelines has finally mustered the courage to recommend that Americans eat less meat and dairy products. And not just to lower our risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and obesity, but also because it slows the rate of climate changes, with its own devastating consequences. The 572 page report released on Thursday notes that half of all Americans have preventable diet-related chronic diseases and that two-thirds of adults and one-third of children are overweight. It concludes that a dietary pattern higher in plant-based foods and lower in animalbased foods is more health promoting

and associated with lesser environmental impact than the current U.S. diet. The 1977 recommendation that Americans eat less meat, by the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs was quashed by the meat industry, and subsequent dietary guidelines panels have been very cautious. The 2010 dietary guidelines panel merely shoved meat and dairy off the official MyPlate icon, representing the U.S. Dietary Guidelines. Though the experts have now told the truth, our family’s health is still up to us. Fortunately, local supermarkets offer a variety of meat and dairy-free options and the internet has lots of advice on vegan recipes and transition tips. ELIJAH HANNESBURG

Hatin’ It Dear Editor, Am I Lovin’ It? Growing up and always hearing “I’m lovin’ it” on TV or on the radio, made me

In truth, the 11.4 million include almost five million people whose plans were canceled because they didn’t comply with ACA mandates. They aren’t newly insured; they already had insurance. It’s important to understand the entire reason the ACA was conceived was to provide affordable insurance to Americans who previously were uninsured. It’s not working. Fudging the numbers, exaggerating the benefits, and covering up bad news have been earmarks of this administration since the law’s inception. Last year the administration was caught inflating the amount of people that signed up for coverage so it would appear Obamacare had met its goal. The error wasn’t found until after the election, so it’s plausible to assume the mishap was deliberate and the hoax perpetrated to help Democratic candidates. There is reason to worry: the GOP majority doesn’t seem to have an alternate plan, meaning if Obamacare fails there will be a free for all, with the greedy HMOs calling the shots and the public at their mercy. Of course, the major problem that will manifest itself moving forward is the cost of paying for those previously uninsured that gain coverage under ObamaCare. Initially, a tax on healthy, working individuals who decline coverage would have been applied to the shortfall. This week the government announced it was waiving it, for the moment, at least, since it came as a surprise to so many people affected. So how will we make up the shortfall? You guessed it – the rest of us will have to pay more. want to eat McDonald’s. Those three words always got me excited about a happy meal (and the toy). But as I grew older I learned that often times, food animals are raised with unnecessary antibiotics - including McDonald’s meat. I would be more likely to keep eating McDonald’s if I knew their meat was raised without the routine use of antibiotics. Antibiotics are given in precise doses to treat specific types of infections. When used on a daily basis by farming operations it increases the likelihood that all kinds of bacteria, including the ones that make people sick, will develop resistance and our life-saving medicines won’t work. Most animals that receive antibiotics aren’t sick, but given the drugs to compensate for the unsanitary and crowded conditions and to make the animals grow bigger, faster. If McDonald’s, one of the world’s largest fast food restaurants, made the switch to raise their meat antibiotic free, it would send a strong signal to meat producers

(and consumers) that this is the way of the future. DAFNE BARRIOS

Political Persecution Letter To The Editor, Why has Brooklyn native and former Newark, NJ lawyer, federal inmate Paul Bergrin been transferred to the ultrarestrictive high security Bureau of Prisons, Communications Management Unit in Terre Haute, Indiana? The Communications Management Unit in Indiana is one of only two in the entire U.S. and is normally for leaders of terrorist groups. Conversations within the unit are remotely monitored and any communication with the outside world is heavily restricted and monitored. There is effectively no attorney-client privilege in the unit and it is near impossible for him to work on his own defense. Continued on Page 14.

Paul Bergrin is a military veteran who later became a federal prosecutor, then rose as a high-profile criminal defense lawyer who was accused of becoming involved in his clients illegal drug and prostitution businesses, in addition to conspiring to have witnesses murdered. No one has ever accused him of being a terrorist. Bergrin felt that his prosecution was a political persecution, set off by his vigorous defense of U.S. soldiers charged with prisoner abuses in Iraq. Bergrin said that the soldiers were only following the orders of Bush Administration officials. Bergrin’s unexplained assignment to the CMU and recent Bush-era torture revelations lend credibility to his claims. ERIC HAFNER

Homogenize The Globe Dear Rick, The human thinking process has never been noted as being influenced exclusively by logic based on facts, but recently there has been a particular abuse of that more colorful thoughtless thinking process. Three American girls had, and now three British girls have, decided to join ISIS in their fight to homogenize the globe to their obsession. As many as 500 of the estimated 3,000 Westerners who traveled to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic terrorists are female. What were they thinking? Although we look at the actions of those six young ladies as being thoughtless; that they somehow deluded themselves into thinking that they are not only a part of, but significant and instrumental in their chosen movement, we are amazed at their naïveté. They never will be. An Offer You Can’t Refuse The East Hampton Film Society, a newly formed club that meets every other week to screen classic and art house films, will host a showing of The Godfather at Guild Hall. The society’s opening night, March 5, is slated to solidify its place as a staple member of the Hampton’s art community. According to Will Stoecker, senior curator and founder of the society, all are welcome to the screening of the classic Coppola film, for an $8 admission fee. “Everyone in the Society is thrilled to be able to see this classic on the silver screen again and we hope to spread the word to the rest of the art community,” Stoecker said. Just Married

Steven Rewinski, son of Michael Rewinski and Denise Johnson, married Michiko Nawata, daughter of Ryosaku and Kazuko Nawata, last Wednesday at a civil ceremony at New York City Hall. Steven, a Southampton High School graduate, met Michiko, from Fukuoka and Tokyo, Japan, two years ago in New York City. The two plan to make both New York City and Tokyo their homes as they travel around the world together. As a young man just starting out “Stevie Rew” was a beloved intern at The Independent and we’re always proud and pleased when our little chicks leave the nest. All the best to the newlyweds.

Gallant Bonac Finally Falls Independent / James J. Mackin

East Hampton’s season is over, but the Bonackers had quite a season. Clockwise from top left; Brandon Johnson makes a clutch free throw against Islip; Brenden Kennedy-Gay is an All-County candidate; Regis O’Neil battles inside; Kevin Fee feeds the open man. By Rick Murphy

The joyride is over, but it was one hell of a trip. The East Hampton Boys basketball team, which transformed itself from an also-ran into the hottest team in Suffolk County, lost Friday night in the County Class A semifinals. Bonac, the third seed, was upended by Harborfields on the winner’s court, 73-58, but not before providing one more thrill for the fans.

East Hampton seemed dead in the water late in the third quarter as the Tornadoes built up a 20-point lead. Up to that point the Bonackers, who live and die by the trey, were ice cold. Then, they exploded. Fittingly, it was Kyle McKee, the coach’s son, who caught fire. McKee drilled a three, and then another. After a Harborfields turnover McKee hit another bomb. And then, another. His fifth trey of the final quarter cut the margin to five, and when Brandon Johnson drilled two free

throws Bonac had, amazingly, cut the 20 point deficit to three. The Tornadoes, though, didn’t earn the Number One Seed by folding their tent. It was Malcolm Wynter’s turn to get hot. He drilled a trey of his own to give Harborfields some breathing room, and then he scored again. When the smoke had cleared the Tornadoes had scored nine unanswered points. Bonac was out of miracles. McKee finished with a game high 25 points in defeat; Wynter had 17 for the winners, who were to play

Bayport/Blue Point for the County A title last night. Bonac finished with a 13-6 mark, including nine in a row to begin 2015. Islip came into East Hampton on February 17 looking for an upset and damn near pulled it off. The Bucs used an in-you-face defense to frustrate the locals and used their height advantage to control the boards on both ends. The East Hampton offensive engine hums along nicely when it’s Continued on Page 26.

Killer Bees Take CD Crown, Mariners Up Next By Rick Murphy

Only the Bridgehampton Killer Bees could go up in class to take on a larger rival, play a lackluster game, and win by 18 points. The Bees took on Stony Brook, the Suffolk County Class C champion, at William Floyd Saturday. The game was strictly for Independent / Rick Murphy bragging rights. Tylik Furman was Bridgehampton the star of the Killer h a s a l r e a d y Bees’ game against q u a l i f i e d Stony Brook. for the NYS tournament as Suffolk’s Class D representative. The Bears took the air out of the ball and their lack of aggression seemed to rub off on The Bees as the two teams lolly-gagged through a 15 point first quarter and an equally listless second stanza. Charles Manning Junior’s block set up a 6-0 Bridgehampton mini-tear , giving the Bees a 19-14 halftime lead. It was time to turn on the

afterburners in the second half. Tylik Furman fed Manning for a gorgeous, acrobatic alley-oop dunk. Moments later Josh Lamison ripped down a rebound and went coast-to-coast. Furman then fed Matt Hostetler for a three-pointer. A Manning trey gave the Bees a 12-point edge. The Bears, reeling, crumbled in the fourth. Manning fed Lamison, then after forcing a turnover Furman hit Lamison deep in the paint for a three point play that made it 40-23. Furman, the best player on the floor on this night, then scored, stole the ball, and scored again. That was that. The final was 54-36. Lamison led the winners with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Furman scored 14, hitting five of nine shots while recording eight assists and four steals. Hostetler and Manning each contributed nine. The victory set up what promised to be one of the most anticipated g a m e s i n E a s t E n d h i s t o r y. Bridgehampton is the state’s top ranked Class D team and boasts a 20-1 record, having lost only to a Class B powerhouse, the Syracuse

Academy of Science. Southampton, playing after Bridgehampton Saturday, earned the County Class B championship and a berth in the state tournament. That story is reported elsewhere in this issue. Last night the two teams, once bitter rivals, clashed in the County BCD game – Bridgehampton will be allowed to keep playing larger

schools until it either loses or captures the overall county title. A standing room only crowd was anticipated for the showdown, scheduled to be played at Walt Whitman High School. The Independent will have the story of the game on our website by the time you read this: visit www. indyeastend.com. Win or lose, Southampton will advance to the state Class B tournament and Stony Brook will compete in the Class C tournament.

Baywomen Take The County B Title Alexis Fotopoulos is more than just a reliable scorer. The Hampton Bays senior is a scoring machine and Saturday at St. Joseph’s College was no exception. Fotopoulos put on a show to be remembered as the Baywomen took on a very game Babylon team 47-42 to capture the County Class B title and a berth in the state tournament. There is a three point line 22-feet out called the arc. It is so-called because any shot from beyond the line is worth three points. In the NBA the line is even further away. Then there is the imaginary Fotopoulos line, which is anywhere inside half court. On Saturday Hampton Bays was nursing a three-point lead when she hoisted one from no man’s land -- and it ripped through the chords. The next time down the floor, Fotopoulos pulled up well behind the arc and let fly again. Once again, it found the bottom of the net. Fotopoulos finished with 20 for the Baywomen, now 18-2. Hannah Reed contributed 14 including four three pointers, all in the first half. Mary Ellen Hilton also hit two straight bombs in the final quarter, the second of which gave the locals a one-point lead. Next up for the Baywomen is Pierson in the BC game Saturday at St. Joseph’s. A win will propel them to the ABCD title game on March 3. Win or lose Hampton Bays plays in a New York State regional semifinal March 9 at LIU/post. R.M.

Bonac

Continued from page 25. three-cylinders are purring. When Brenden Kennedy-Gay, Kevin Fee, and McKee are all hitting, this team can compete with any Class A team around –in fact, the Bonackers led the county in three-point shooting, and all three guards made at least 40. The offense is designed to function well when two of them are hitting, and can even survive with one shooter on target. On this night, Kennedy-Gay kept the team in the game during a drought that lasted through much of the second and third quarters. Playing hard, Islip forged to an eight point first half lead. 3628, with Frankie Basile, Suffolk’s second highest scorer, contributing 14, including a three at the buzzer. B o n a c c o a c h B i l l y M c Ke e , borrowing from Bonac’s former coach, Ed Petrie, switched defenses in the second half. Petrie had used a four-man zone with an additional player, in this case Fee, playing Basile head-to-head. Petrie, who holds the record for most head coaching wins in the state, bottled up Tobias Harris, who played for Half Hollow Hills in 2008, and Bonac went on to win the Long

Island championship. Harris? He is a star in the NBA nowadays. Basile, with Fee shadowing him, became frustrated, and then downright passive. Bonac started chipping away when Fee heated up. McKee fed Fee, standing in front of Bonac’s bench, late in the fourth. Fee drilled a long trey to bring the home team within one. With 2:20 left Kennedy-Gay, a junior all-county candidate popped from beyond the arc to give the locals the lead after they trailed for most of the game. Johnson, Bonac’s center, doesn’t get a lot of ink or drill threes from the wide-open spaces. He’s anchored in the paint, doing the dirty work, usually opposed by players bigger and taller. But it was Johnson who made three critical plays to seal the deal. First, a defensive rebound to thwart the Bucs attempt to tie the game. Then, with 22 seconds left, another. Finally, a critical free throw to put Bonac ahead by four points. The finale was 52-47: Islip scored only two points in the final quarter. Basile scored 16 on the night, but only two in the second half. Kennedy–Gay led the winners with 17 including four bombs, Fee added 15 (two treys) and McKee chipped in with 11 and hit three treys.

Southampton Prevails In Epic Battle By Rick Murphy

It didn’t look good for Southampton. The Mariners were playing their nemesis, Babylon, for the third time this season. Both teams had one a game, and both finished with 17-1 marks, tied for the League VII championship. But this one was for all the marbles – the Suffolk Class B title and a berth in the state playoffs – and the Mariners were ice cold. The clock was winding down and the Panthers had a nine-point lead and the ball. Worse, Southampton’s best player, Israel Johnson, was on the bench in foul trouble and Naises Fulford, the team’s tallest player, was playing with four personals. Somehow, the local found a way back. Coach Herm Lamison made two key moves: he put “Izzy” Johnson back in the game and he called for his patented full court zone press that has served him so well over the years. Chad Pike hit two foul shots to start the comeback. With 2:30 left on the clock Fulford did likewise. Meanwhile, the Panthers were

having trouble handling the defensive pressure. With under a minute a Fulford put back evened the score, but Brendan Laing put the Panthers back on top with an inside move. Iz grabbed the ball and headed for the hole, and his driving layup in heavy traffic with less than eight seconds left tied the game at 59, sending it to overtime. Fulford, trying to contend with the six-foot, six-inch Laing (23 points) fouled out, by Johnson was playing on fresh legs. Pike hit a three to put the locals on top, but Laing responded with a three-point play to knot the score again. Johnson hit a trey, stole the ball, and converted one of to charity tosses as Southampton opened up a four-point lead, but this time Babylon fought back, knotting the game at 66 and forcing another overtime. Finally, the Panthers blinked. Sharp shooting Nick Antolini, usually a brilliant long-range bomber, was having a dismal game, and Izzy and Zach Cummings, his backcourt counterpart, were finding the mark. The Mariners pulled away: the final was 80-76. Johnson

was spectacular, scoring 18 of his 23 points from the fourth quarter on. Cummings contributed 21. Furman had 14 before fouling out. Isaiah Johnson, Israel’s brother, tallied 11. Antolini was held to five. The Mariners, now 19-1, is headed for the state B tournament. Before then, though, is the little matter of their archrival for the better part of

the last century – Bridgehampton. The Bees, 20-1 in Class D, are moving up in the class, and the two teams were scheduled to clash in the Suffolk County ABCD title game last night. The Independent will have the results on our website by the time you read this. Visit www. indyeastend.com.
