THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES. NEED I SAY MORE? In every country there is a group connected to local or national government that is the butt of jokes and ridicule. In the USA, since the days of the Pony Express it’s been the U.S. Post Office. “Going postal” is a phrase to indicate that someone has lost it and is based on the fact that on occasion (I must admit rare) an employee of the Postal Service has run amuck and machine-gunned a bunch of people. That is now all over. The fact is that the Post Office has its own problems and is losing millions of dollars every minute. In 2013 the Post Office reported a loss of over $5 billion and I don’t know about you, but I don’t pick on anyone who loses $5 billion a year. My plan is that the feds declare the sale of marijuana legal and the government becomes a dealer and sells grass and Lotto tickets out of those thousands of post offices that are in every town in the country.

This should not be a typical government boondoggle. They do not have to hire a single person but they should provide jobs for all their current employees. I guarantee you won’t see a happier guy than your cheerful postman after a few weeks of delivering cannabis to the hungry masses. With my plan the government will make a profit selling grass of as much as 20 to 30 billion dollars. Anyway, with the Post Office now off-limits to our taunts and laughter, we must find a new group. Might I suggest the Department of Motor Vehicles? Every child comes out of the womb hating the Department of Motor Vehicles in New York City. Everyone has had at least one bad experience at the DMV in his or her lifetime. It’s not just that their people, with one or two exceptions, are incredibly rude. They are quite stupid, too. Is it a New York phenomenon? Are

they as rude in Iowa? Minnesota? Rhode Island? I invite readers who are from out of town to let me know if being nasty, uncivil, ill-mannered, coarse, discourteous and vulgar is just a New York thing. I wrote a column about 13 years ago when my daughter Jessie went to the DMV to get her learner’s permit. My wife, the beautiful Judy Licht, and I did what every parent should do with a 16-year-old. You first make sure she is aware of all the responsibilities of being a safe, considerate driver and then you try to get her prepared for the experience of dealing with the pit bulls who work at the Department of Motor Vehicles. “What’s the big deal?” Jessie asked. “You’re young, you don’t know these fiends,” I answered. “At 4:00, when they close their offices, they all get together and count up how many people they sent home for not having all the necessary forms. And then, when those people come back the next day with that form, they tell them that they need still another form.” “You’re exaggerating, as usual,” Jessie said, smiling. “I’m sure they’ll be nice.” The next day Jessie came home from her first trip to the DMV in tears. “Ohmigod! They were worse than you said,” she sobbed. “Told you so,” I said with a condescending smirk on my face. “Tell me, what was the worst part?” “I guess it was when they called Mommy a barbarian and escorted her out of their offices screaming.” “Barbarian,” I said with a smile.

“Sounds like your mother to me.” “Don’t let her hear you saying that, she was just there to sign an affidavit that I was 16 and really Jessie Della Femina. It was awful.” “What happened?” I asked. She answered, “I went into the room and there was a group of us standing on line and there was this Chinese-American man who worked at Motor Vehicles and he was in charge. You know how Chinese are always so polite and soft-spoken and nice? Well, this man was nuts. He kept screaming, ‘BE QUIET! BE QUIET!’ and then this very nice African-American woman standing next to me said something to me and before I could answer the Chinese man screamed, ‘YOU TALKED! YOU TALKED!’ Then he ripped both of our applications out of our hands and tore them to pieces. That’s when Mommy stepped in.” “Is the Chinese man still alive?” I asked nervously. “Well, he and Mommy started screaming at each other. He was yelling ‘OUT! OUT!’ at Mommy and she was screaming ‘NO ONE SCREAMS ‘OUT! OUT!’ AT ME WHEN I PAY! PAY! HIS SALARY!’” “When did they use the ‘B’ word?” I asked. “As we were leaving. The man and this other man, who I think was his supervisor, were screaming ‘YOU BARBARIAN!’ at Mommy.” “Was there any blood spilled?” “No.” “Then it was just another typical day at the Department of Motor Vehicles,” I said. Postscript: Judy contacted a Mr. Joe Picci, who is head of “Communications” at the DMV in Albany. Communications at the Motor Vehicles is one of the great oxymorons of all time. Mr. Picci promised a thorough investigation. We haven’t heard from him since. But it’s only been 13 years and the Department of Motor Vehicles has a tendency to be a bit slow-moving. And in Mr. Picci’s defense, being in charge of investigating rude behavior at the DMV is as thankless and useless a job as being a women’s swimwear buyer for ISIS. Hearing Bumped To This Week By Kitty Merrill

Public hearings on four measures designed to address the din over East Hampton Airport were cancelled last Thursday night, due to the weather. They’ll be held tomorrow at LTV Studios in Wainscott beginning at 4:30 PM. The proposed local laws, if enacted as written, would ban helicopters on weekends during the summer, enact curfews, and limit noisy aircraft to one trip per week during the summer season. On Sunday, Congressman Lee Zeldin held a press conference in Southold designed to underscore the importance of finding an immediate solution to the helicopter noise problem on the East End. With local elected officials and representatives from several civic groups in attendance at Southold Town Hall, Zeldin said, “The persistent issue of helicopter noise on the East End, summer after summer, has become an increasing impediment on the quality of life of many of my constituents. That’s why I am calling on the FAA to find an immediate solution for this problem, especially since it

continues to get worse.” Zeldin said he and elected officials gathered “to unite together to pursue common sense solutions to reduce helicopter noise. My constituents cannot afford to have another season ruined by disruptive noise. This is an important quality of life concern that must be resolved.” While Assemblyman Fred Thiele spoke of protecting the home rule powers of East Hampton Town, North Fork Legislator Al Krupski noted, “Local control can’t cover all the issues as it relates to regulating helicopter traffic, so it is good to have strong representation on the federal level from Congressman Zeldin.” East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell agreed. “The Town Board of East Hampton appreciates Congressman Zeldin’s support for local control of the East Hampton Airport, the epicenter of the aircraft noise issue, in the ongoing effort to mitigate this noise, which affects so many residents across the East End,” he said. Residents of the North Fork and Shelter Island, plus sections of Southampton Town added their

WHICH ONE IS THE CADILLAC DRIVER? Actually, it’s all of them. Which is pretty different from back in the day, when people had very specific ideas about who drove a Cadillac – and who didn’t.

WE COULDN’T TELL, EITHER! In fact, the only sure thing these drivers have in common is their shared appreciation of today’s Cadillac. That means innovative styling, high performance, low maintenance and knowing they’re driving America’s contribution to the world’s best cars.

voices to those in East Hampton crying out for relief from the incessant noise for several years, ever since traffic burgeoned and choppers chose a route over their homes. In fact, the problem has sparked the occasional feeling of a feud between the forks, with those on the North Fork complaining they receive all the downside and none of the (financial) upside of the chopper traffic. On Sunday, Shelter Island Town Supervisor James Dougherty called the noise “a terrible issue” for Shelter Island. “Those who enjoy the benefits of the helicopter flights should endure the noise and pollution. It’s as simple as that,” he said. O n M o n d a y, K a t h l e e n Cunningham, chair of the Quiet Skies Coalition and longtime aircraft noise abatement advocate said her group was “delighted and extremely grateful” that Zeldin is making aircraft noise abatement one of his first acts as an elected representative. “The East Hampton Town Board has worked in a transparent and comprehensive way to propose policy that will protect the public from the adverse health, environmental and economic impacts of aircraft noise, while supporting a safely maintained, recreational airport. In league with

The Picture of Success Starts Here.

our Congressman’s efforts on the federal level, the noise affected can finally feel confident that their concerns are being effectively addressed,” she said. In other news of the airport conundrum, just two days before last week’s scheduled hearing the town board’s finance committee announced it was unable to reach a consensus regarding the impact of the four proposals on the economic feasibility of the airport becoming a self-sustaining facility. The Friends of the East Hampton Airport Coalition saw the deadlock as “a major blow” to the town’s plans. Said Coalition spokesman Loren Riegelhaupt, “The finance committee’s refusal to sign off on this deeply misguided proposal confirms the true economic hazards of the plan and the Town Board’s blatant disregard for these risks. The airport’s future and the Town’s financial health is on the line and when you can’t get your own budget committee to sign off on a plan, shouldn’t it give pause and force everyone to reassess? “We call on the board to postpone any vote on these restrictions so the people of East Hampton can get a full and fair analysis of what these restrictions mean for our community, property taxes, local businesses and economy.”

Irish Eyes – And Other Parts – Are Marching By Kitty Merrill & Emily Toy

Unless the snow makes a hasty retreat, East Enders are not likely to see much green this month. But regardless of the weather, ‘tis the season for everything Irish! Folks across the East End will be gettin’ their green on in honor of St. Patrick’s Day over the next few weeks. St. Patrick’s Day, aka the Feast of Saint Patrick, commemorates Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized patron saint of Ireland, and marks the arrival of Christianity to the Emerald Isle. Also, the traditional Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day. And if you love a parade, then you’ll love St. Patrick’s Day on the East End. Join in for the fun at the many parades on tap for this month. Expect to see bag pipers and drum bands, step dancers, and a contingent of locals and visitors alike lining the streets. On Saturday, the Westhampton Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade steps off at noon. For nearly 50 years, the WHB parade’s seen its fair share of great moments. Since 1968, folks young and old have been marching down Main Street along with other community organization members and town officials. Special themed floats, complete with costumed characters and other festive garb in honor of Paddy’s Day flood the street during the hours-long parade. Leading every parade is the grand marshal, who is carefully selected each year on a basis of community

Manor Website Hacked By Kitty Merrill

Was it real terrorists or some pimply-faced geek playing in his basement? Saturday night, guests attempting to book rooms on the Montauk Manor website found a message at the top of the page informing visitors the site was “Hacked by Islamic State (ISIS).” “We are everywhere,” a message beneath the ISIS logo and the Arabic message “There is no God but God,” proclaimed. The message, found on each page of the website, along with musical accompaniment, also included a “winky face” emoticon, “;)” leading savvy viewers to question whether the hacker was from ISIS or a

According to East Hampton Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo, there was no specific threat against the Montauk Manor and the condominium’s website was one of many that had experienced the same type of thing in the last few days.
“This incident appears to be a case of a third party Internet based website provider having been hacked,” he said Monday. “Many websites around the country

We are again reminded to remain most vigilant at all times. I will continue to monitor this issue closely and will report back once I receive new details that I can share.”

Stubborn Felon According to East Hampton Town Police Edwin Uzhca-Chafla just keeps doing it – over and over. Driving and drinking, that is. Police said the Three Mile Harbor Road resident was stopped near his residence Saturday night after running into a tree. A quick check revealed his license was taken away after a DWI conviction a year ago, and again in November. This time around UzhcaChafla “had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath” and he slurred his words and was unsteady on his feet. This time East Hampton Town Justice laid down the law: bail was set at $110,000 bond, of 11 grand cash. The accused couldn’t come up with the cash, and off to county jail he went.

News Item: Bibi Takes Washington Thank you! Thank you very much! I wanna tell ya – what a pleasure to be here tonight in Washington D.C. Thank you! Thank You! Hey – what do ya call a building filled with Republicans? The U.S. House of Representatives! Thank you! I wanna tell ya . . . Badda Boom! I gotta tell ya! I gotta tell ya! I haven’t seen this many empty seats here since Teddy hosted the twofer cocktail party at the Kennedy Center! I did not know that man could break dance! Who knew? And he was already dead then! Oy! I don’t wanna say some people around here didn’t want me to come tonight but a couple U.S. jets fired on my plane on the way here! Yes, that’s right. Thankfully they

missed – the U.S. sold all the good fighter jets to Israel! Badda-Boom! Oy! Thank you! Take my wife! I see Nancy Pelosi out there! How ya doing? Who did that eye make up? Jeez! It looks like you got stuck on an elevator with Ray Rice! I wanna tell ya! Badda-boom! Boy, this place is something! Cold, cold, cold. Dark clouds. Frigid. Nasty. And the weather ain’t too good either! Speaking of Iran I saw the Supreme Leader the other day! Ouch! That Diana Ross has really let herself go! Does not look good! Thank you! Thank you very much! the Pope are on an airplane that goes into the sea and there is only room for two of them on the raft. They argue over who gets left out and Biden says the Pope because “he’s indeflatable.” I swear! Really Happened! I kid you not! Hey, is it just me or did I hear something about Iran getting a nuclear bomb? Come on? What’s next, toaster ovens? Bada Boom. Take my wife! Thank you! Thank you very much! Did I tell ya I got a call from the White House! Not! Just kidding! An unmanned drone can get closer to that place than I can! An armed intruder is more welcome than me! I don’t want to say the White House is out of touch with my people but the vice president thinks a borscht belt is something I wear instead of suspenders! Thank You! I kid you not! Oy vey! Take My Wife! You’ve been a wonderful audience!

Does Everybody Really Know What Time It Is? It used to be when time was important. Every kitchen had a big clock on the wall family members relied upon. We’d have to be to school at 7:55. Lunch was 11:52. Most kids couldn’t afford wristwatches. Time was important.

Sunday I woke up. There were two alarm clocks. The TV had the time. The cable box had the time. Karen’s iPad and my Samsung tablet both had the time displayed. And our phones. That was just the bedroom. In the kitchen the microwave, stove, coffee machine, cable box, TV, and computer all displayed the time. And, we have a wall clock – go figure. It was like that in every room of the house. Computers, DVD players, X-Box, radios; the time was everywhere. No two were exactly alike, either. Ever anal, it took me over an hour to set them to the same time, to restore order to the anarchy. “Are you sure they are right?” Of course I was: Fall Ahead, Spring Backwards, Oopsie. Did I mention dyslexic? I got in my truck. There are two clocks on the dashboard, one on the radio and another on the Sirius. Plus, for some reason known only to the lord above I still wear a watch. It used to be it was hard to find out the time. The other morning a friend of mine ran up to me in the deli in a terrible hurry, “dude, do you know what time it is?” I looked at him quizzically. Did he just warp in from another galaxy? How could he not know the time?

Pay For Quiet Skies As we predicted a few weeks back, even a cursory look at the proposal on the table to control flights in and out of East Hampton Airport reveals there was little black and white analysis of the financial repercussions. It is silly to assume we can turn down federal funds – the FAA has pumped millions into the facility over the years – and that somehow the airport will be financially stable. It is also Pollyannaish to assume we can keep raising fees to make up the shortfall. The facility simply does not generate enough revenue to produce the kinds of monies needed to maintain the runways. We think the problem is that both sides see the financial impact of controlling helicopter noise as the make or break issue. Many of those fed up with the noise the parade of helicopters produces feel the necessity to insist limiting flights will have little effect on the airport’s budget. Conversely, aviation interests want the public to understand that there are significant costs associated with implementing the proposed law. Money isn’t the issue. The noise is. There are millions of dollars that will be needed down the line for maintenance

Independent VOICES

Plans And Schemes Dear Rick, Given the Democrats’ sorry record on handling EH Town fiscal affairs, it’s not surprising that Supervisor Cantwell would seek outside help in the form of a Town Manager. He has already sought help by keeping on staff Bill Wilkinson’s accomplished finance guy Len Bernard, but apparently that’s not enough to help manage the spending and regulation apparatus which seems to always accompany a Democrat’s administration. The Town Manager proposal is just another layer of government officialdom,

and the scary part is that it no doubt foreshadows another era of expensive plans and schemes requiring added oversight. And the notion that this position will be apolitical is laughable. Suffolk and Nassau counties are already the most expensive places to live in the country. More bureaucracy which also serves to diffuse accountability is not the answer. REG CORNELIA

Fear Mongering Dear Editor, It’s not the first time Bibi has come to the U.S. to interfere in our politics and disrespect the President. U.S. taxpayers have given Israel billions of dollars over the years to enable him to continue the policies which are bad for Israel and by definition bad for the U.S., and this is how he shows his gratitude.

and repairs. In addition, lawsuits are expected from those adversely effected by the proposed restrictions and possibly by the FAA. Legal fees are going to mount. We mustn’t be intimidated. The helicopter operators have had every opportunity to self-regulate flights and mollify the thousands of East End residents who have had their quiet summer days and nights shattered by a barrage of noise. They have ignored every request from every politician around. By pretending fees won’t rise those in favor of stopping the copter din are falling into a trap: it can be argued by some they are deliberately misleading the public. Let’s look at realistic projections that include runway maintenance and anticipated legal fees, roll them out over a 10-year period, and come up with some financing options. Let’s get those noisy things out of our skies once and for all and get back to enjoying our summers. East Hampton Town is a wealthy community and we have ample resources to fund and win this fight. As it stands now the current town board appears willing to do the easy part and curtail the copters, and leave the painful part for future boards: telling the public what the associated costs are going to be.

Blame can certainly go to Boehner for politicizing this in the first place, and Bibi jumped right in to give what can only be described as a desperate last campaign speech before the Israeli election. He is in trouble there, for good reason - one being his human rights record - and if he gets reelected through fear mongering just like another presidential candidate did, we can be sure that he will be back to meddle again in the near future. He certainly pulled out all the stops - using Elie Wiesel as a prop, invoking Moses and Esther and trying his best to channel Churchill. This spectacle reminded me of Stephen Colbert’s address at the 2006 Whitehouse Correspondents’ dinner. First he effusively praised George W. Bush, and then he roasted him. But Bibi’s address was downright dangerous - especially while negotiations are currently in progress. With allies like

this, we don’t need enemies. PATRICIA MASON

What Is Love? Dear Editor, The day after former mayor Rudy Giuliani lied to the American people saying that the president may not love America, the networks mentioned it over 300 times. They also mentioned Hillary’s troubles not lying about Benghazi 13 times. Which is fair and balanced, even after her recently-found emails may redefine the meaning of “is.” Clearly, anti-ballistic missiles from a Jihadist country regularly chanting “Death to America,” they too, are the world’s largest sponsor of terrorism, is of little national interest for Barry, so America is not going to fight Israel’s wars, even Continued on Page 16.

though Israel has been fighting America’s for decades. It is also clear that when ICBMs land on LA and Manhattan they’ll only kill Jews and not Americans. Saying Obama does not love America should not happen in civil discussions, and in light of the mainstream media’s and White House’s crucifixion of Bibi Netenyahu for deciding not to insult the American people by dishonoring a congressional invite, Obama proved that he loved Israel and Jews even more. In fact he loves them to death - the sooner the better. To take our attention off of Christian heads rolling in pools of blood on Libya’s beaches, Chez Obama enlightened us to the greatest danger of all: climate change. The president was correct, the climate is changing, just not in the direction he would like it to. The president told us climate change is “settled science.” So are physics, astronomy, biology, nanotechnology, medicine, and computer and space technology I guess. Along with this president’s view of ours being the end of history with his soondeparture from the political scene, there will henceforth no longer be any scientific advancemes or knowledge. Before I forget: How many times can you remember Obama reflecting on his love for America? Me neither. The fact is, the former Mayor of New York City was dead wrong. The president doesn’t even like America. ANDREW BENJAMIN

Was Hillary Clinton using private email to avoid Freedom of Information Laws? Rima Mardoyan I don’t think that was what she was doing. I trust her. She behaved in a very trustworthy manner and was totally transparent when she was questioned about it. She was willing to release all the emails to the scrutiny of the Justice Department immediately. Thom Speckenbach I don’t think she was trying to do anything wrong. That account probably existed prior to those laws. She’s already turned over 55,000 emails and now it’s up to the Justice Department to read them. If you didn’t trust Bill and Hillary before, you aren’t going to trust them now. Virginia Arrington I’m not sure whether there were any intentions of hiding anything in a private account. We’ll have to wait and see. But I can’t say it would be a deciding factor in my voting for her either way. There are so many more important things to consider. Gene Grossane Yes I do think she was hiding something. I think she definitely had a purpose and knew what she was doing by setting up her own private email. That’s just my gut reaction. Maybe it comes from how I believe the Clinton’s have behaved in the past.

All soup is donated by Montauk restaurants - Duryea’s Lobster Deck, Montauk Yacht Club, Gurney’s Sea Grille, Inlet Seafood, John’s Pancake House and Sole East are just a few who participated in 2014. The parade runs up Edgemere Street, then right on South Edison Street then enters Main Street at the eastern end of town. The Friends of Erin Gala Cocktail Party is held on Saturday, March 21, also at Gurney’s, from 4 to 8 PM, with a buffet, open bar and live music. For tickets, visit the Friends of Erin website. The WHB parade lays claim to a half-century mark, while another is one of the East End’s newest and boasts the distinction of being one of the shortest parades in the nation. The seventh annual Am O’Gansett parade steps off promptly at noon on Saturday. Its path is just one block from Mary’s Marvelous to the Mobil Station and back on Main Street. The Am O’Gansett parade’s theme is “Music Is The Message.” It will be led, fittingly, by Michael Clark of Crossroads Music, going by his Irish sobriquet, McMichael O’Clark. Touted as family friendly, Am O’Gansett will feature lots of live musical performances during the parade and after parties at Crossroads Music and Innersleeve Records. Official parade T-shirts and mugs will be on sale. The parade is sponsored by the Amagansett Chamber of Commerce. Look for chamber members Patty Collins Sales and Joi Jackson Perle as country western stars Patsy & Perle. They presided over the official crowning of the grand marshal last weekend, adorning O’Clark with his official sash and specially made hat/ fez crafted by Sales. Across the Peconic Bay, on the North Fork, the sound of bagpipes will be in the air when the North Fork Chamber of Commerce presents its annual parade in downtown Cutchogue on Saturday. The march steps off at 2 PM. In Riverhead, the Suffolk Theater has its own way of celebrating St. Paddy’s. Saturday night Chris Byrne of the famed Irish rock group Black 47 performs with his new band, The Lost Tribe of Donegal, and special guest Irish Step dancers. Visit the theater’s website for ticket info. Looking ahead, and west, the Hampton Bays St. Patrick’s Day parade is slated for Saturday, March 21. Starting at the Hampton Bays Elementary School on Ponquogue Avenue, the annual parade is set to

continue to Montauk Highway and west to the reviewing stand, ending in the Hampton Atrium parking lot. This year, thousands will be lining the streets and neighboring watering holes as eight bagpipe bands, various floats, step dancers, and local youth groups celebrate with everything Irish. This year’s parade will be led by Dublin native and Buckley’s I n n Be tw e e n c o -o wner Ma r k Shortall. The longtime Hampton Bays resident was selected as grand marshal by the Hampton Bays Parade Committee, aka the Hampton Bays Hibernians, Michael Collins Division 11. The festivities are scheduled to begin at 11 AM. On Sunday, March 22, the big kahuna of parades begins in Montauk at 11 AM. Terry Watson, a hamlet resident recognized for her

Bellone said. “Some are running to honor members of the military or people lost in the September 11 terror attacks. It also is a last-chance qualifier for the Boston marathon. The marathon has a distinctly planned route that was designed to showcase and drive tourism toward downtowns along the

Coast Guard Auxiliary News By Vincent Pica

Commodore, First District, Southern Region (D1SR) United States Coast Guard

EPIRBs, PPIRBs & GPIRBs, What? Many of us have heard of satellite systems hailing the USCG when a boater pulls the chord, pin, string, wire, pick one. A signal goes up from the boater’s device to a satellite (in the old days it went up to planes that were, hopefully, flying by) and down to the Coast Guard’s Rescue Coordination Center. This would begin the “rescue clock starts now” process. The device is called an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon – EPIRB, pronounced “ee”-purr-b. Back In The Day The old model EPIRBs transmitted on dual frequencies of 121.5 and 243 megahertz (MHZ). Hopefully, this was picked up by passing planes and satellites. It could take four to six hours for someone or something to pass overhead before it reached the USCG. Also, the footprint that you were within could be as much as 12 square nautical miles. That

is a lot of water to cover. On the USCG website, it says that the 121.5/243MHZ devices are “no longer recommended.” The State Of The Art Interestingly, the 121.5MHZ frequency is favored for radio d i re cti o n f i nding ( RD F) . T he newest EPIRBs now transmit simultaneously on 406MHZ and 121.5MHZ. The 406 reduces the footprint to one square nautical mile. Since the 406MHZ is heard by satellites all over the world and, within an hour, the USCG RCC will have commenced coming to your aid. And the rescuers will also be looking for your EPIRB’s 121.5MHZ signal with their RDF gear. In heavy seas, that may very well be the difference between passing right by you while you are in the trough – or knowing that you are just over the next wave. EPIRBs are classified by whether

www.indyeastend.com

they will deploy automatically (Category I) or you have to “pull the pin” (Category II.) I am of two minds. I have a CAT-I on my own vessel but I am hoping that I get the chance to grab it before it floats free and starts signaling for help. I want them to find me, not it. However, you can conjure up circumstances (knocked out in a capsize?) where you are in no shape to pull any pin and the EPIRB is at least drifting along with the boat, beeping and flashing away. So, you tend to plan around worst case. But what are GPIRBs and PPIRBs? A “GPIRB” (gee-purr-b) is an EPIRB with a GPS signaler built-in. It has all the functionality of the EPIRB but also sends a GPS lat/lon.The search square in now roughly 30 ft by 30 ft. Unless you are trying to hide from the rescue team, they will find you. A “PPIRB” (pea-purr-b) is a Personal EPIRB, also called a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). You wear it on your person. It also has the built-in GPS. When you attain a coxswain rating in the USCG Auxiliary (the person responsible for the boat, the crew and the mission), the USCG gives you a PPIRB. “Even if you go hiking, take this with you.If you get lost, we’ve got too much invested in you not to come get you!”

March 11, 2015

23

The basic criterion between the EPIRB, GPIRB and PPIRB is price. Smaller search area equals higher price. Smaller size (carry it on your person) equals higher price again. Prices range, based on a quick internet search, from $200 to $1000.

What To Do? Do you need one if you never leave the bays and creeks Out East? Frankly, no. Read the SSP press column on “Radio Smarts” and you’ll be fine. How about going out to the Canyons for shark? You could be anywhere on a 100nm rhumb line from Moriches Inlet to the Canyons. You are out of radio range and, unless you have a GPS aboard, you don’t know your lat/lon within miles. Think about it, bunky. When you buy one, you will register all your details with NOAA, which maintains the global database. Keep that data up to date and one day you may find a red and white helicopter hovering over you.

BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources Department, which is in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing…”

Music & Mudslides Back At Cupsogue? If the huge fire at Cupsogue Beach last year dropped a wet blanket on your passion for sunset summer concerts and icy blender libations, there could be hope on the horizon. Last week the Suffolk County Legislature unanimously supported a resolution co-sponsored by Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman, which amends the 2015 capital budget to include $750,000 for improvements to Cupsogue County Park. Last September, the main facility at Cupsogue Beach was destroyed in a large fire that engulfed nearly the entire park. The fire destroyed the

concession stand, showers, seating areas, bathrooms and a first-aid station. The $750,000 includes money for architecture and engineering as well as money to install a temporary concession and restroom facility to serve the public this season and until the main building is constructed. It is estimated that the 5200-square foot building will take two years and over $2 million to complete. The access of the building will be improved as well and the sanitary system brought up to code. “The fire last year at this historic and beloved building was tragic,” said Legislator Jay Schneiderman,

who serves as chair of the legislature’s Parks and Recreation Committee. “The park will reopen this season with temporary facilities providing users the comforts they are accustomed to, and a new facility will rise from the ashes which will accommodate park users for generations to come.” It is anticipated that the county’s fire insurance policy will cover much of the costs of the temporary structures and the reconstruction of the main building. Asked whether the park will return to its prior glory, with sunset concerts each night, Schneiderman’s legislative aide said the temporary facility would be available for food and drink but he wasn’t sure yet about the music venue. Reached Monday, the lawmaker said, “I don’t see any reason why we couldn’t have music this summer.” So, yes to the mudslides and maybe to the music.

Historic Cottage Transferred To Town Fowler House, a cottage thought to be the sole surviving dwelling of the Montaukett Tribe, is in town hands. Last week the Suffolk County Legislature approved a measure sponsored by local legislator Jay Schneiderman transferring the 1.7-acre property from county to town hands. The cottage has been believed to be moved from its original location in Montauk during a relocation of 1890 to an area known as Freetown in East Hampton. “Preserving the Fowler House will help us tell the story of our past to future generations,” said Schneiderman. The property was acquired by Suffolk County due to tax default back in 2002, and then given to the Town of East Hampton for affordable housing purposes. As part of the affordable housing component, the county included a stipulation requiring the property to revert to Suffolk if it wasn’t used for affordable housing. Town officials felt the property was historically significant and unsuitable for affordable housing. They requested the transfer for historic purposes. “The Fowler House is likely one of the last surviving houses directly connected to the Montaukett Indians,” said East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell in a release announcing the transfer. “I thank Legislator Schneiderman for his help with the county to repurpose it for historic preservation.” In support of the resolution, James Divine, a descendent of the Montaukett Tribe appeared before the legislature and made a compelling case for the preservation of the Fowler House, Schneiderman said. Next up, the town will designate the Fowler House as a historical landmark, then develop a long term plan for its historical preservation in coordination with the East Hampton Historical Society.

SPORTS Hampton Bays Falls; Pierson Showdown Looms INDEPENDENT

By Rick Murphy

The season is over for the Hampton Bays Baywomen, the Suffolk County Class B champs. The locals fell to Carle Place in the Long Island Class B title game last night at LIU Post after leading for much of the game. If truth be told, the Baywomen went into a shooting slump in the ABC title game last week and it continued last night. Hampton Bays relied on its defense to take a first quarter lead against the Frogs (yes, really) and nursed it for the better part of the game, leading by seven at halftime and eight after three quarters. But the danger signals were there. Alex Fotopoulos, the Baywomen’s go to player and an all-Long Island candidate, had to work hard for her points. And the rim seemed to have a cover on it. Mostly, though, Carle Place was heating up, especially Sarah Pisani, the Frogs’ diminutive point guard. Her three made it a five-point affair, and within minutes Carle Place had evened things up. Pisani scored three points in the final 30 seconds to seal the deal. She ended with 12

points and five assists. Fotopoulos led all scorers with 15 and Hannah Reed added 14 for the losers. Fotopoulos, by the way, averaged 24.8 points per game this season, fourth highest in the county. Saturday is D-day for the last remaining East End girls basketball team looking to advance deeper into the New York State Championship. Pierson/Bridgehampton, the Suffolk County Class C champs, will play Saturday at 6 PM at Mount St. Mary’s College in Newburgh against an opponent yet to be determined. Carle Place will play earlier that afternoon in a Class B regional final. The winners advance to the NYSPHHS Championship Final Four the following weekend at Hudson Valley Community College. Pierson (9-10), the county Class C champs lost to Hampton Bays in the county BC title game on February 28. Last week Hampton Bays, (195), lost the County Small Schools Championship to powerhouse Harborfields, which went on the defeat Commack for the overall county title.

The 2014-15 Suffolk County Class B champions.

The Baywomen put a brief scare into the Tornadoes, opening up a 20-15 first quarter lead. That was it for the highlight reel, however. Harborfields put the lid on Fotopoulos and went into blitzkrieg

mode, walking off with a 60-36 victory. Fotopoulos nevertheless managed 19 points in a losing cause. Pierson lost to Hampton Bays on February 20 in the county BC game.

Mariners Lose Heartbreaker To End County Run By Rick Murphy

The Southampton Mariners came within seconds of making history Friday. The Mariners, the Suffolk County Class B champs, took on Brentwood, the Class AA champs, for the overall county title. No East End team has ever defeated a Double A (largest enrollment high school) in the history of the playoffs. In the end, though, the locals fell just short, losing an 88-84 game in overtime. Last night, Southampton played Malverne for the Long Island Class B crown. If Southampton prevailed, the team will move into the New York State Regional finals Saturday at Suffolk Community College in Selden against an opponent yet to be determined. A victory then means a trip to Glens Falls, the site of the New York State Final Four tournament. Win or lose, senior Isaiah Johnson will go down in Mariners’ folkore for an unbelievable playoff run. To say the burly six-foot-three forward has carried the team through the county tournament would be an understatement. He has, simply

put, been unstoppable. Brentwood, 22-1, is one of the top ranked AA schools in the state. But the Indians couldn’t contend with Johnson, who exploded for a game high 37 points and almost single handily brought his team back from a double-digit deficit. Brentwood came out running, and Southampton seemed stunned by the speed of its rivals. The Mariners, though, hung tough and in the second quarter began whittling away at a 16-point deficit. Johnson was heating up and giving the taller Indians fits with his array of inside moves. Nasies Fulford, the Mariners other big man, also asserted himself. The Indians nevertheless held a six-point halftime lead. The second half was all a nail biter throughout: a test of nerves, stamina, and poise. Johnson’s putback at the end of the third stanza gave Southampton a one-point lead. Mike Almoncy, the Indians junior sharpshooter, woke from his slumber, and Brentwood’s high scorer Ali Mableton also came to life. Back and forth it went. The

seconds later to ice it. In addition to Johnson’s 37 Fulford tallied 21, Jamal Allen had 21 for the winners, as did Mableton. Almonacy had 14 and Ginyard, 12. The Indians will face the winner of Saturday’s Uniondale-Baldwin game for the Long Island Class AA championship at 5 PM.

Indians went to Tayon Ginyard, who had the hot hand, but Johnson nailed a three to knot the score at 76 with time running out. Mableton had a shot to end it but missed. Almonacy took over the overtime period. His three-point play put the Indians ahead by three and he drilled two charity tosses

Contract: 4S by South or 4H by East Dealer: East Vul: East-West

This hand was dealt at the Water Mill Bridge Club recently. My partner and I sat East-West and I opened 2H and South doubled for takeout. My partner bid 4H, followed by three passes. It appeared that the defense would set me one or two tricks. However, in the spirit of giving, the defense was very generous and took only one spade and their two aces. Making 4! When we moved to the next table, we were in for a surprise when the same four boards appeared. It was impossible to correct the fatal error but all of us decided to continue play even though the results could not be used to win masterpoints. But now, instead of sitting East, I was sitting South and had the strong spade holding that the previous South had held. This time we were able to win the bid with a four spade contract. I was able to make the contract with

an overtrick. The outcome was one giving me bragging rights for making two different game-going contracts while seated both East (first time) and South (second time). It’s almost never going to happen and be recorded because the overall afternoon game had to be voided due to our movement error. Yet, despite the facts that the game was voided and the defense let me make my 4H contract, I’m going to continue to brag about how brilliantly I played, at least on that one hand we played twice. Any comments or questions can be sent to gaman13927@aol.com. If you know four or five dedicated people who would like to learn how to play the world’s most exciting and challenging card game, please call me at 631-766-6656 or email me at the above address.
