WAS LEWIS CARROLL ON CRACK? One of the great challenges of being a parent or a grandparent comes around this time of year, when every grade school and high school puts on an end-of-the-schoolyear play or musical. I don’t have to tell you about the joy of seeing your own flesh and blood standing there on a stage, desperately trying to remember their lines. Sadly, this thrill lasts for only a few minutes. Then comes that moment when you realize your incredibly talented child’s one big line or one big song is over and now you have to listen to all these other little kids who, frankly, have no place on the stage compared your child or grandchild who, with a little luck, can easily go on to become the next Justin Bieber or Lindsay Lohan, minus the drugs, drinking, tattoos and shoplifting, of course. My own career on the school stage came to a disastrous end when I was eight years old. I was, naturally, a child prodigy, and I played the mandolin. Every little Italian boy played the mandolin in those days, unless he was blind, in which case he played the accordion. I was given the honor of playing
for the assembly at PS 95. My job was to sit alone on the stage playing “Pomp and Circumstance” on the mandolin while the entire student body of the school marched down the aisle to their seats. So there I was, sitting and waiting for the music teacher to hit the two chords on the piano, which was my cue to start playing, when I started daydreaming. The teacher, old fat Miss Rossman, kept hitting the same two chords, and I was just staring straight ahead. Then, when I realized it was time to play, I froze. Finally Miss Rossman heaved her 260 pounds onto the stage, where she forcibly removed me by pulling me by the arm, and then she dashed back down to the piano to play the students in. I was the laughingstock of the third grade. However, my disgrace on the stage of PS 95 pales by comparison to the worst school play experience of my life. That came a number of years ago when I was summoned by my daughter to view a command performance by two of my grandchildren in a school

production of the much-hated Alice in Wonderland. Do you know a single human being who ever liked Alice in Wonderland? When you talk about over-rated pieces of doo-doo, Alice has to be on the top of everyone’s list. And yet, since 1865, when it was first written by Lewis Carroll (while he clearly was on crack), we have had the “Alice in Wonderland’ Conspiracy,” which has been passed on from parent to child. Every child comes out of the womb hating Alice in Wonderland, but from the moment they are born they are force-fed the Alice treatment. They get started with musical mobiles spinning Alice characters around their cribs. They are read to sleep by the Golden Book version of the book . . . they watch Alice cartoons . . . they are forced to sit through Walt Disney’s interminable flop version. As they mature, they realize they’re bored, but they don’t want to break their parents’ hearts and tell them that this so-called classic is a stiff. Then they grow up and have children of their own and what do they do? They inflict this moronic, confusing book on their own children. And if that’s not bad enough, every once in a while some jerk in the movie business (five years ago it was the 3D bomb version starring Johnny Depp) or one of the networks takes a shot at boring the entire nation with still another version of Alice in Wonderland. There’s even been a porno version of Alice, and for crying out loud, that was boring, too (er . . . er . . . that’s what they tell me).
IN THE NEWS
So there I was, sitting alone in this loud high school auditorium filled with giddy parents warmly greeting their neighbors with a sweet sincerity that you can only find in the suburbs. Then the show started. It was beyond boring. From 20 feet away every school kid looks alike, so I had no idea which of the kids were my grandkids. Every second was an hour. “This is a nightmare,” I thought. “This will never end. I’m going to die here.” A minute/hour later, the thought of death began to grow on me. I can just see those headlines: “Kindly Old Granddad Dies Happy While Watching Grandkids Perform in Alice in Wonderland” in The Daily News. The New York Post’s headline would be, “Was It Murder in Kiddy Theater?” with the subhead “Did the Mad Hatter Run Amuck?” Finally, after what seemed like a month, the lights came up and many of the parents and grandparents gave the performance a standing ovation. Many mistook my tears of relief for tears of joy. A note for grandparents who are going to be snookered into attending a grandchild’s show this year. Here’s a tip on how to make the show move along once the lights in the auditorium are dimmed: Purchase at least 10 little airlinesized bottles of vodka, which you can hide in your pockets and shoes. It’s best that husbands and wives work as a team. Grandpa can open the bottle, take a slug and pass the bottle on to Grandma. Grandma can finish off the bottle with one swig and then hide the empty bottles in her purse. I promise a great time will be had by all. CAMPAIGN 2015
Jay’s Going All-In By Rick Murphy
Jay Schneiderman has always been more comfortable being the Top Dawg, so his decision to run for Southampton Town Board didn’t take much soul searching. Schneiderman was contemplating running for the town board, but when incumbent supervisor Anna Throne-Holst decided to run for Congress, “I explored the prospect of running for town supervisor instead,” Schneiderman, who is currently a county legislator, said. And he came out firing in an interview with The Independent prior to his formal announcement
Friday afternoon. Southampton Town Republican leader William Wright touted the local roots of Richard W. Yastrzemski, a Southampton Village Trustee expected to run against Schneiderman. Wright maintained Schneiderman is a carpetbagger who just changed his registration to Southampton Town so he could run for office. “I’ve been living here for nine years. My kids have gone to school here for nine years.” More to the point, Schneiderman said, he has represented Southampton Town on the county level for 12 years.
“Southampton is comprised of a bunch of little hamlets,” Schneiderman said. “Just because you know what’s going on in Southampton Village doesn’t mean you interact with Westhampton or Sag Harbor” – a pointed reference at Yastrzemski. He also took a jab at Councilwoman Christine Scalera, who is running for reelection on the GOP ticket. “She just moved here a couple of years ago.” Schneiderman expects to garner the Democratic, Independence and Working Family party lines. Schneiderman served as East Hampton Town Supervisor more than a decade ago and his calling card is fiscal acumen. “I earned the town the highest credit rating in the state and four consecutive years of tax reductions.”
With warmer weather on the way, our propane division is ready to begin services to your pool heater...and we install whole house generators...just part of many propane services from Quogue-Sinclair.
Schneiderman noted that former town supervisor Linda Kabot, who lost to Throne-Holst in the last election, could conceivably run a primary to wrest the GOP away from Yastrzemski, or perhaps Scalera, should she decide to go for the top spot. “I like Linda, I really do. But I don’t see her stepping up to run against me this year,” he said. (See elsewhere in this edition for Kabot’s thoughts on the race.) Schneiderman pointed out that even though he is term-limited from running for the county legislature, he could go back to that job in two years if he so decided.

CAMPAIGN 2015
Q&A With Anna Throne-Holst
By Rick Murphy
Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst recently announced she will forego a another run for her office and instead take on Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin next year. In an interview with The Independent’s Editor In Chief she explains her motivations.
INDY: Lee and Tim [Bishop] spent an astronomical amount of money in the last Congressional race. Do you have your chips lined up or are you hopeful the DNC will provide the kind of financing you’ll need? ATH: I’m going to be working hard to make sure our campaign has resources we need to win, and I expect that burden to fall squarely on me. I am hopeful my local support will spill over to the larger district, and my track record of people, not politics, will resonate with donors on all levels. But ultimately this race isn’t about who collects the most money. It’s about the people of Long Island and the type of leader they want in Congress. When you compare the priorities Lee Zeldin and Congressional Republicans have
pursued in Washington with what we’ve accomplished at the local level in Southampton, I think that choice is crystal clear. INDY: It was extremely honorable of you to forego another run for supervisor, where I think it’s safe to say you would have won easily. You could have collected a paycheck for two more years that way. Did that cross your mind? ATH: The decision not to run for another term was difficult for several reasons, first and foremost because I have loved my time in that position and the honor of working alongside the wonderful people that serve Town Hall. Despite serving in a political minority for the bulk of my time there, we got an enormous amount of work and positive change accomplished. This next step is about my love of public service. It’s the chance to make a positive difference for all Long Island families. When Washington gets it wrong – i.e. makes it harder to pay for college or achieve a secure retirement -- that has a real
impact on families all over Long Island. My kids were the very ones to encourage me to go for it – and having their support and their feeling that Long Island needs a representative in Congress who will go to bat for all of us in Washington - and - that I have shown I can be that leader, well, that meant the world to me. INDY: I’m under the impression Lee was off to a good start in Washington. I take it you don’t agree? ATH: For Long Island families, I think Congressman Zeldin has been a huge disappointment. He’s voted to gut Medicare, to give more tax breaks to the wealthy at the expense of the middle class, even to shut down the Department of Homeland Security just to make a political point. That kind of record in Washington doesn’t reflect our values here on Long Island. We need a Representative who understands the unique needs of our communities and will get Congress to invest in people. That’s what I’ve done at the local level – kept a careful line on taxpayer spending, worked to revitalize downtown areas that badly need it, such as Hampton Bays and Flanders/ Riverside -- while focusing on the ever important environmental issues and protection of our coastline. INDY: Are you excited about being on a national stage. I know the local issues like erosion and helicopters are on the agenda there. ATH: Those are great examples of where our local issues need to be better supported by an effective representative in Washington. Helicopter noise is an issue where the Federal Government and the FAA must get involved in a positive and pro-active way. Similar with coastline erosion and storm resiliency, where we need to have
Independent/Jessica Mackin
the active support of the Army Corps and FEMA. No one knows that better than I, having worked on these issues for several years on the town level. Frankly, I think having that experience, and knowing first hand how that can and should be done better, will be a very unique strength I bring to Washington. INDY: How will you appeal to voters in the western part of the Congressional district? I’m assuming Lee will say you are Hamptons-centric because it figures you will do quite well in the race with voters out here. ATH: I believe my track record and people, not politics, approach to representing will be as appealing to voters in the western portion of this Congressional district – and in stark contrast to what Lee Zeldin has shown to date. I am looking forward to getting out there and connecting with constituents in all areas of the district to listen and speak on these issues. INDY: This throws the local election into a tizzy. There is Jay [Schneiderman], of course, and even Fred [Thiele]. How do you see the Southampton race shaking out without you? ATH: I’m sure there will be a number of great candidates, and I’m committed to ensuring we have a strong slate of representatives who will continue our record of managing tax dollars effectively – and I look forward to continued good work together, to represent the town’s need on a federal level!

Political Dominoes Toppling In Southampton By Rick Murphy
It wasn’t exactly a bombshell, but it’s the biggest thing to happen to local politics in quite some time. When Southampton Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst announced she would not seek reelection last week several insiders said they had already figured out her intentions. Nevertheless, it was the final domino that toppled all others. Instead, Throne Holst, an Independence Party member, will challenge Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin next year (see interview with ATH in this issue). Not coincidentally, County Legislator Jay Schneiderman, an Independence Party member who has been endorsed by all four major parties at one time or another, changed his voting address from East Hampton to Southampton Town; he intends to go after Throne-Holst’s vacant seat (see accompanying article). Schneiderman was the East Hampton Town Supervisor more than decade ago, when he was elected on the Republican ticket. Meanwhile, Southampton Councilwoman Christine Scalera, a proven vote getter, is seeking reelection to her council seat -- as of now. “I’m happy doing what I’m doing,” she said this week. “Anything can happen,” said Southampton Town Republican leader William Wright. “Things happen at the last minute,” Scalera acknowledged. With the GOP convention slated for tomorrow, some party leaders are suggesting Scalera would be the party’s best chance to wrestle away the supervisor’s seat. From Schneiderman, of course. As of now, Richard W. Yastrzemski, a Southampton Village Trustee with strong local roots is still the favorite to get the Republican nod to run for the top spot. “Jay is a 20-year politician. He just switched his registration. People will see right through that,” Wright asserted. Wright said Yastrzemski represents the GOP ideal candidate: “local community people who live and work here.” Wright said he had heard rumblings about Throne-Holst for several weeks. Schneiderman broke the news that he was considering running for office in Southampton at the beginning of the year in an exclusive interview with The Independent. He made it official Friday. So that leaves Southampton Councilwoman Bridget Fleming, a Democrat to . . . run for county
legislator, of course. She will likely be opposed by Amos Goodman, a political newcomer who has the County Republican endorsement and will probably get the nod from Southampton’s Republicans tomorrow. Former Southampton Town Councilman Chris Nuzzi, who lost in a bid for Schneiderman’s seat on the horseshoe in 2013, has reportedly expressed surprise he wasn’t asked to run again.
“We asked Chris to screen and he didn’t show up,” Wright said. “Chris is a professional. He can always primary.” That would challenge Goodman for the GOP spot on the ballot. Then there is former Southampton Town Supervisor Linda Kabot, who was bested by Throne-Holst in the last election. “I have had many calls of encouragement and pledges of support if I were to once again run for town supervisor this year,” she

told The Independent yesterday. “While I have taken these words of support to heart, I have to give this very serious consideration since I have many family obligations to attend to at this time.” Kabot could elect to challenge the party choice in a primary if she doesn’t get the nod at the GOP convention -- she’s done it successfully before. She couldn’t resist at taking a dig at Throne-Holst, saying her archrival is “hoping to be successful on the coattails of Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton on the Democratic line.”

The race for town trustee sees a large field of hopefuls for the seat on the nine-member board. Republicans selected incumbents Tim Bock, Sean McCaffrey, Diane McNally and Nathaniel Miller to run for re-election. They’re joined on the ticket by Joe Bloecker, Joseph Davidson, James Grimes, Michael Havens, and Stephen Lynch, Jr. The local Independence Party nominating committee chose incumbents Br yan Byrnes, an Independence Party member, Democrat Bill Taylor and Republican incumbents McCaffrey and Bock
following their screening earlier this month. For the other five seats, they chose just one Republican, newcomer Lynch, Jr. Pat Mansir, another member of the Indies, will run on that party’s line, as will Democratic candidates Zach Cohen, Rona Klopman and Francis Bock. In addition to Taylor, Cohen, Klopman, and Francis Bock, the Democrats cross-endorsed Byrnes and Mansir, and added Deb Klughers, Tyler Armstrong, and Rick Drew. “We will be moving forward with a strong ticket and a resurgent Republican Party in East Hampton,” the committee’s media director Greg Mansley wrote in a release heralding the GOP picks. “Voters can expect a new government with real transparency and accountability.”

Purchase Three More Properties
By Kitty Merrill
The spirit of Community Preservation Fund law requires a municipality to compile a Project Plan listing all properties desired for protection as open space, farmland, or historic purposes. To be eligible for aquisition, a property must be in the plan. It doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes properties come along after a project plan has been adopted, and the owner wants to sell quickly. In those cases, a town board may hold a public hearing on adding the land to the project plan, and another one on the actual purchase, then vote to adopt afterhearing resolutions on the purchase all on the same night. That’s what happened in East Hampton last Thursday night as purchases of three properties moved forward. Since the Fund was primarily created for the protection of open space, authors of CPF law, and members of its appointed advisory committee, recommend refraining from acquiring land with structures on it. It doesn’t always work that
way, and didn’t with the three purchases pondered by the East Hampton Town Board last week. All three have houses on them, and the law requires their removal. In each case, the sellers would be on the hook for the cost of demolition and removal. First on the docket was a waterfront parcel on Gerard Drive in Springs. Located in the Accabonac Harbor Critical Environmental Area, the .59 acre site was offered for sale by the estate of Dorothy King. According to Scott Wilson, director of land acquisition and management, it has long been a priority of the town to protect property in the area. The removal of a small house and septic system will allow for the re-establishment of a natural buffer for surface water filtration, limiting the flow of chemical contamination. The acquisition will help start the process of returning the area back to its natural state, Wilson said. Trustee Deb Klughers noted the purchase would also provide more public access on Gerard Drive. The town agreed to pay $900,000 for
the property. Next up were just under three acres on Three Mile Harbor Road owned by Jonathan Miller, Junior. Town historic experts deemed a small historic house on the land “not salvageable,” Wilson reported. Officials will work with the owners to document special features before the building is torn down. Benefits of the million-dollar buy include the creation of a visual buffer to the harbor, prevention of future subdivision, and the establishment of a pocket wildlife reserve. The big-ticket item of the night was over six acres on Swamp Road owned by former town Councilwoman Theresa Quigley and her husband Hugh. It’s going for over $2 million. Located contiguous to over 500 acres of town-owned preserved land to the east and west and state and county-protected land to the
north, the property could serve as “an essential trail link” between the preserved parcels. Wilson offered that anyone who hasn’t had a chance to see the views of Northwest Creek from the property, “You’re missing one of the primary reasons to live here.” Jim Zajac, president of the East Hampton Trails Preservation Society, also testified to the scenic beauty of the property, particularly its view of Stottinger’s Pond, which is almost completely located on the property. The town “should not hesitate to act,” Zajac said. Stottinger’s Pond is a manmade pond, local attorney and avid hiker Richard Whalen pointed out. “It’s perhaps the most beautiful, least known water body in the town.” With so much of the surrounding acreage preserved, Northwest Creek is one of the jewels of the town open space program, said Whalen. “It’s one of the great success stories.”

The Creature From Lake Agawam By Emily Toy
Independent / Kitty Merrill
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reported earlier this month that shellfishing in most of western Shinnecock Bay was closed due to the presence of a potentially deadly biotoxin produced by a red tide algae bloom. And now, whatever’s in the water seems to be spreading. The DEC announced the presence of blue-green algae blooms in Mill Pond and Lake Agawam in Southampton, prompting health officials to ask residents to not use, swim, or wade in those waters. It’s also been recommended to keep
pets away from those areas. Though blue-green algae are naturally present in lakes and streams in low numbers, they can become abundant, forming blooms in shades of green, blue-green, yellow, brown or red. According to a press release from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, “Contact with waters that appear scummy or discolored should be avoided. If contact does occur, rinse off with clean water immediately.” The release continues, imploring people to seek medical attention if any of the following symptoms occur after contact: nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; skin, eye or throat
irritation; or allergic reactions and/ or breathing difficulties. Effective last Friday, the DEC

reopened about 3600 acres of shellfish lands throughout the Town of Southampton. The areas were initially closed on May 7, after the DEC’s Bureau of Marine Resources detected saxitoxin, a naturally occurring marine biotoxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning, or PSP, in shellfish in Shinnecock Bay. The closures for shellfish will be revoked in most of the normally certified shellfish lands in western Shinnecock Bay, but about 315 acres in a cove outside the mouth of Wessuck Creek will remain closed. No cases of biotoxin illness in humans were ever reported from ingesting shellfish from western Shinnecock Bay, and in years past, the restriction on the harvest of shellfish has been lifted by early June, when the algae blooms dissipate as the waters warm. However, this marks the third time in the past four years that the western portion of the bay was closed to shellfishing in the spring, with the restriction applying to all bi-valve shellfish and gastropods, like conch, whelk and moonsnails. Saxitoxin poisoning has sickened hundreds nationwide over the last decade and killed two people in the Pacific Northwest about five years ago when the victims ate shellfish tainted with the biotoxin. The decision to reopen the area was based on, according to the DEC, the results of extensive testing on shellfish samples from the western portion of Shinnecock Bay. “DEC’s microbiology laboratory has tested more than 85 shellfish samples for biotoxin since late March, with 20 of those samples collected from Shinnecock Bay,” officials said. The prohibition on the taking of carnivorous gastropods that was implemented on May 7 remains in effect for all of western Shinnecock Bay lying west of the southbound lanes of the Ponquogue Bridge and east of the Post Lane Bridge in Quogue.

Neighbors Want Cell Tower Taken Down By Rick Murphy
A Springs property owner has filed suit against East Hampton Town in a move designed to remove the controversial cell tower erected by the Springs Fire Department on its Fort Pond Boulevard property. The law firm of Esseks, Hefter and Angel, LLP filed on behalf of an LLC that owns nearby 27 Talmage Lane. It is controlled by David M. Kelley, who is also an attorney and an outspoken critic of the 160-foot high monopole. According to court papers and statements made by SFD officials the pole was erected after the department was issued a building permit late last year based on a 2004 determination. But the court papers state the decision was based on a memo from the town attorney’s office 10 years earlier that “mistakenly concluded” no other review was needed. Though a fire department and other municipalities and quasimunicipal property owners may obtain a “Blanket Exception” to bypass local zoning and planning
laws, it is not automatically issued. Instead, according to court papers and NYS case law, the applicant must first undergo a “balancing of the public interest test” to ascertain if the project is deserving of immunity from local regulations as dictated in the County of Monroe Balancing Test, a defining case in state law that deals with a very similar scenario. Also in this case, the complainant alleges the SFD did not even attempt to undertake an environmental review, and Springs officials acknowledged as much at a recent public meeting. Further, the monopole erected is a “Tier II Personal Wireless Service Facility” and thus the SFD should rightly, “make a proper application to the planning board for an exemption” pursuant to the Monroe case, opponents argue. In 2004 fire officials backed off plans to erect the monopole in the face of community opposition. Late last year, though, the department and Elite Towers LP paid the town $1290 and were issued a building
permit on October 30. Since surrounding neighbors were not given proper legal notice of the pending construction, the appeal of the issuance of the building permit is valid though it filed more than 60 days later, according to the court filing. That’s because, according to the court papers, “the 60-day period did not begin until mid-April” when
the actual construction began. Up until that point, the general public was unaware the tower was going up; fire officials published an obscure public notice buried in a local paper months earlier. The town offices were closed over the weekend so no one from the attorney’s office was available for comment.

Of course, Ed Petrie will be remembered as a basketball coach so adroit and skilled that he won more games than any other public high school coach in New York State history. Some will remember him for his athletic prowess: he was a good enough basketball player to make it all the way to the top, the New York Knicks. Those achievements are for Wikipedia and the various Sports Halls Of Fame he is inducted in. Locally, Coach was a legend, but for a different reason. He was as real a presence on the East End as the breaking waves or the rising sun. That was him at the post office, in the supermarket, on the golf course. Yes, he was a coach, a teacher, and a mentor, but he transcended those titles, because for hundreds of youngsters he coached, taught and mentored he also befriended. These were friendships of equals, bred to go the distance. That easy smile and patient demeanor were always on display. He was never too busy to stop and talk, and the conversation almost always eventually turned to the game he loved. The relationships grew, endured, and prospered. He coached at least three NBA caliber players, taught scores of future Ivy Leaguers, physicians, scientists, lawyers and the like. Others stumbled along the way, fell into the booby traps life is dotted with. In the end the ultimate gift Coach Petrie possessed was the ability to make all of us feel like NBA players, like scientists, doctors and lawyers. He was proud to walk among us and share with us this small town world he refused to leave, though there is no doubt stardom beckoned had he chosen to pursue the next level. He had friends here, and that’s why he stayed. Lots and lots of friends. He was, and will always be, simply “Coach.” There will be a wake at Yardley & Pino in East Hampton tomorrow from 4 to 7 PM. A full obituary will appear in next week’s Independent.

Phyllis Gallaway I never had a pet growing up. When I graduated I got my own apartment. One of the first things I did was adopt a chocolate poodle from a shelter. My roommate got mad that I hadn’t asked permission. So I said, “You can move out.” And she did. Now I have three dogs and two cats. Barbara Kent Waffles, a red cocker spaniel. I got him from a neighbor. I was about eight. At first my mother didn’t want to let me have him. She didn’t want to have to take care of him. But he really needed a home and I did end up taking care of him. He did become a real family dog. William Walker It was a fish, a little goldfish. I was about seven when I got him. I named him Will and he lived in a bowl on my desk and swam around in it. I had him for about two years. My mom got him for me. Now I have a white Chihuahua named Pancho.

Gazmend Feta I lived in Albania and we had a dog that was half German Shepherd, half wolf. He’d been living in the forest. We got him as a puppy and had him for more than nine years, so I grew up with him like he was another sibling. He was super smart and sweet and loved people. launch of its new pest control division–Twin Forks Pest Control. Fire Shutters World Pie A fire at World Pie on Main Street in Bridgehampton on Saturday has temporarily closed the local staple. It also closed Main Street for several hours on one of the busiest days of the year. The fire was called in to police at around 9:30 Saturday morning. Main Street from School Street to the Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike was closed until almost noon. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, which r epo rt ed l y b e gan in t h e basement. Although the main blaze was extinguished quickly, firefighters found more flames in the walls and basement ceiling, and had to cut into the first floor floors to vent it. Damage was described as “pretty bad” by a witness on the scene. A sign on the front door of the eatery says, “We are temporarily closed due to a fire. See you soon!”

For his Senior Project, the capstone experience at Ross School, Innovation Lab @Ross student Liam Cummings built a small autonomous watercraft that navigates via GPS, and logs data about conditions that impact life underwater. As a test run, he launched the boat in a body of water just outside the inlet to Chase Creek near his home on Shelter Island. Initial findings indicated that the water was slightly alkaline, so Liam plans to conduct additional research to compare these against ideal pH conditions for local sea life.“ The Ross School Spring Musical, Chicago will be performed this weekend at the Ross Upper School, Center for Well-Being. Drives Us Crazy Welcome to the season. They’re back and we’re back with our summer 2015 edition of “Drives Us Crazy,” designed to out the array of traffic infractions and insanity that arrives along with the summery sunshine. This week’s contestants vying for biggest jerk on the roads (and in the parking lots) include (top) the driver of a Masserati who figures it’s okay to park in the fire zone at the IGA in
Amagansett. He’ll only be a minute. Then there was the person in a pickup at the CR39/ Montauk Highway intersection in Southampton (left). Why wait your turn to merge when you can just cut across the grass? Last and totally least is the dunderhead in the Lincoln (right) who passed a line of cars stacked up at the Powell Lane/ David Whites Lane intersection because
the train had just arrived. He onto Powell. The ensuing jam and decided to pass by using the jockeying was entertaining, as no oncoming lane, likely scaring the one would give way to let anyone bejesus out of a second driver else in. Entertaining in May. By who wanted make a lawful left August? Not 11:06 so much. Chef Joe Cipro to Header 2x1:Hampton Daze Header 3/23/15 AM Page 1

Big Week For North Fork Baseball By Rick Murphy
The Southold Settlers are the Suffolk County Class C baseball champions. The Settlers took out Pierson, winning the first two games of a best of three series. On Thursday, playing in Sag Harbor, the Settlers put the final nail in the coffin shutting out the Whalers 6-0 behind the strong pitching of Patrick McFarland, who hurled a nifty two hitter. The winners got all the offense they needed from Shane Johnson and Sean Moran, both of whom laced three hits, and Dylan Claussen who went 2 for 3 and scored twice. A day earlier the Settlers edged the Whalers 5-4 at home. The two squads were deadlocked in the seventh and last inning when Liam Walker drilled a two out single to plate Greg Gehring with the winning run. The Settlers, 20-2, will now enter the New York State Class C tournament, starting with a regional game June 6 against an opponent yet to be determined. Mattituck is the other local boys team still alive. The Tuckers eliminated Port Jefferson in two games and will now play Babylon for the Suffolk Class B title. Mattituck did it in style, overwhelming Port Jeff 15-4 Friday on the loser’s field. James Nish homered, scored three runs, and drove in three more to lead the attack. Marcus Perivolaris

earned the win. Last Wednesday, playing at home, the Tuckers won the opener 9-4 behind the pitching of Joe Tardif and the hitting of Jon Dwyer and Will Gilbersleebe. Mattituck (21-1) was to have played Babylon in the opener of a best-of-three series yesterday. The two teams square off again today at Babylon and Friday, if needed, on the North Fork.
The winner advances to the Long Island Class B Championship and new York State tournament. Westhampton was eliminated from the Class A playoffs Wednesday, falling to Shoreham Wading River 7-3. In softball action the Hampton Bays girls are still alive as of this writing. The team, the third Class B seed, was to have played at

Alan Truscott was an outstanding bridge player who wrote the
New York Times bridge column from 1964 until April 2005 when he retired because of ill health. Recently, the Times discontinued publishing their column, much to the regret of serious bridge players. During his time, Alan Truscott wrote nearly 1300 columns. It’s difficult to comprehend that impressive record. This hand was played by Mr. Truscott many years ago. Not many players could have played it as well as he did. After winning the spade jack, he could see that he needed to win at least one diamond in dummy. On the second trick he led the eight of hearts and finessed with the queen.
Center Moriches yesterday in the seminfinal round. The winner will play Babylon for the title tomorrow. The Baywomen, on the brink of elimination, turned in a gritty performance Saturday to stay alive, beating Mercy at home 3-1 behind the clutch pitching of Marley Tyler. Rebecca Harris and Katie Picataggio had key hits. Hampton Bays is 13-7 on the season. When the queen held, he cashed the ace of hearts and the top three diamonds. Finally he exited with the king of spades. West was able to cash four spade tricks but then had to exit with a club. Now West had to lead one of his three small clubs. Regardless of what East played, Alan could win the last three tricks making his 3 no trump bid. He was a brilliant writer and player! Any questions or comments can be sent to gaman13927@aol.com.

Coast Guard Auxiliary News By Vincent Pica
Commodore, First District, Southern Region (D1SR) United States Coast Guard
No Fuss, No Muss – And Your Favorite Price (Free!) – Vessel Exams In the springtime, the saying goes that a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of love. This may be true but just about everyone I speak to lately has had it with “cabin fever” and wants to get back out there! And, fitfully, spring is here. When getting to work commissioning your boat for the water, stop for a moment and consider getting the “gilt edged” United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Safety Check – better know as the Vessel Exam. Oh, and it’s free.
What It Is Not! USCGAux vessel safety checks are not regulatory events. If your boat doesn’t pass all components of the exam, no one “turns you in.” The examiner will explain exactly what needs to be brought back into line to conform to federal standards and, most likely, will also give you his or her cell phone number. “Call me when you’ve addressed the issue. I’ll come over and we’ll get this boat decal’d as having passed the USCGAux Vessel Safety Check.” What Does The Decal Mean? It says something very simple. This boat meets, at least, federal minimums for 15 specific safety
or regulatory features. Can USCG active-duty members still come alongside and board you? Of course they can. They need no reason whatsoever (see “We’re Being Boarded by the Coast Guard – Now What!?” SSP, 11/15/06). But experience tells me that when the regulars are faced with two boats, and one has passed our exam and the other hasn’t, the other guy had better hope that he has no reason to worry.
How Do I Get One? In an out-reach program started a few years ago, the USCGAux flotillas “Out East” have created “Vessel Exam Days” with a number of marinas and dock masters. Some throw BBQs for their customers. Some set up tables with fresh sets of flares (the most common reason for a boat not to get its decal) and other necessary items like fire extinguishers or air-horns, etc. So, check with your dock master and, if he or she isn’t planning to sponsor a “VE Day,” email me below and I will follow up directly. Or, you can go online. W W W. C G AU X . O RG a n d c l i c k on Vessel Safety Checks. Follow

a few simple prompts and you will be connected via email to a USCGAux-trained Vessel Examiner for scheduling.
What Will The Examiner Check? Believe it or not, the first thing that the dxaminer will ask for is your registration. The registration, not a copy, is required by law to be on the boat. If it isn’t there, the examiner will still conduct the exam to see if there are any other show-stoppers but the VSC decal cannot be awarded without a valid registration on the boat. It can be in your wallet as long as you are on the boat! An important reason for the registration to be in hand is that right on it is the length of the boat as it is known to DMV. USCG safety standards are size-dependent. For example, a boat over 39.4 feet shall (must!) have a copy of the Navigation Rules (the COLREGs you’ve seen so much on here) on the boat. Twenty-six feet or more? Where’s your Pollution placard? Trash placard? At least two “B-1” fire extinguishers aboard? Why Don’t All Boats Pass? Well, as I noted above, the most common reason is expired flares. What does that mean? Your flares come from the factor y with 40 months of “life” and that date is stamped on the side of the flare. Why 40? After shipping and sitting on a shelf, hopefully you have three years (36 months) of coverage. Are the flares still good after the expiration date? Almost without a doubt, they are. But the examiner cannot give you your decal unless you have at least three day and three night “pyrotechnic devices” aboard in an un-expired state. What else can go wrong? Well, before you get ner vous, with over 100,000 exams as the basis, 75 percent of all boats pass on the first pass. And it is not a regulatory event if it doesn’t.
IN THE NEWS
You get specific advice from the examiner on what you need. And likely his or her cell phone number to schedule the re-exam. And, oh yes, it is free. Both times!
Here Is The Breakdown: Display of Numbers -Registration / Documentation 5.435 -- 5.574 percent Personal Flotation Device -Ventilation 2.832 -- 1.451 percent Visual Distress Signals Fire Extinguishers 12.221 -- 4.501 percent Backfire Flame Control Sound Producing Device 1.639 -- 5.156 percent Navigation Lights -- Marine Sanitation Device 8.465 -- 2.921 percent Pollution Placard -- MARPOL Trash Placard 2.375 -- 2.802percent Navigation Rules -- State and/ or Local Regulations 2.742 -- 10.432 percent Overall Vessel Condition -- 4.670 percent Does every boat need to pass every item? Not at all. If you don’t have a marine sanitation device (a “head”) aboard, the examiner just checks “N/A.” But if you do, it must meet federal standards for safe and secure operation. Does your 20’ Seahunt need a set of Nav Rules aboard? Nope. But that 46’ ocean yacht of yours does! You get the picture. So, let’s be sure we go to sea with a vessel that meets the gold standard and increase the safety of life at sea – yours! Oh, and it’s free. BT W, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources Department, which is in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing . . .”
