Second Bronze Star For Local Hero

Memorial Day 2014 recedes in the rearview. But many people believe every day is a day for remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice and heroes who continue to stalwartly serve the country.

New York Air National Guard Staff Sergeant Matthew Zimmer, of Westhampton Beach, is one such hero. Earlier this month he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with a first oak leaf cluster with Valor for heroism. The Bronze Star with a “V” device is the military’s fourth highest decoration for valor.

This is the second time Zimmer’s received one.

Independent readers will recall Zimmer in the news last year when he, along with five other members of the 106th Rescue Wing’s 103rd Rescue Squadron were honored for heroism under fire during a December 2012 rescue mission in Afghanistan.

An earlier mission near Camp Bastion in Afghanistan in February of that year led to Zimmer’s second Bronze Star. On that day,

the pararescue team member and his team, assigned to the 46th Expeditionary Rescue Squadron of the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing at Kandahar Airfield, responded to an urgent casualty evacuation in the Helmand River Valley.

Near an insurgent stronghold, according to Zimmer’s citation, a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle operated by soldiers from the Republic of Georgia Army hit an improvised explosive device critically injuring four occupants and trapping two dead soldiers inside.

Ignoring the life threatening hazards of smoke, flames, and “randomly detonating ordinance” near the overturned vehicle, Sgt. Zimmer tried to control the fire while using the Jaws of Life to get into the vehicle. He held his breath and entered the vehicle as another IED exploded nearby, critically wounding an explosive ordinance disposal technician.

immediately began assisting with a field tracheotomy (cutting a hole in his throat and inserting a breathing tube) that ultimately saved the technician’s life. The pararescueman then moved the injured technician through unsecure terrain about 100 meters for immediate casualty evacuation.

Returning to the scene of the explosion, Sgt. Zimmer helped

extricate two remaining soldiers who had perished.

“Sergeant Zimmer’s unwaivering courage, medical acumen and extraordinary composure saved the life of the explosive ordinance technician and ensured the successful recovery of two fallen heroes,” the citation reads. “By his heroic actions and unselfish dedication to duty, Sergeant Zimmer has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.” All four members of the pararescue team who responded to the incident received the Bronze Star for Valor.

Sgt. Zimmer is a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Between December 2011 and May 2012 he and his team performed more than 300 combat search and rescue and medical evacuation missions. He took part in over 130 combat missions during two deployments to Afghanistan. He joined the Air Force in 2001 where he served as an instructor in survival, escape and evasion and in water survival. He left the Air Force in 2007 to pursue his education and enlisted in the New York Air National Guard two years later.

Sgt. Zimmer received the medal during a formation held at the ANG Base at Gabreski Airport on May 1.

“Being Awarded the Bronze Star with V for valor, one of the nation’s highest awards for heroism, is a testament to the highest standards of heroism and self-sacrifice. To earn that award twice is an amazing statement about the heroism, dedication to duty, skill, and determination of Staff Sgt. Matthew Zimmer,” Maj. Gen. Patrick Murphy, the adjutant general of New York was quoted stating in a military website story about the event posted on the DVIDS portal. “Staff Sgt. BARBIE IS DYING There are women reading this who are over 70 years-old who played with Barbie dolls.

But sadly, after ruling over the dollhouse since the 1950s, Barbie is dying.

According to Forbes magazine, Mattel, Barbie’s parent corp., says the company’s biggest problem is its declining Barbie sales. Worldwide gross sales for the Barbie brand were down 14 percent.

Mattel is trying desperately to keep her alive, saying, “Barbie has been brain dead for 56 years, so why is her old boyfriend Ken so anxious to pull the plug now?”

Ken is claiming Barbie spoke to him in doll talk many years ago and said that she did not want to hang on once her worldwide sales fell.

Barbie wanted to go off to doll heaven where she could join all those other washed-up dolls of yesteryear, dolls like Raggedy Ann and Teddy Bear, Betsy Wetsy, Tickle Me Elmo, and those hideous Cabbage Patch kids.

Mattel Corp. claims Ken has no right to pull the plug, since he was discontinued by the toy company 10 years ago and has been replaced by a new love in Barbie’s life, an Australian surfer named Blaine.

Ken argues he was Barbie’s “boyfriend” for 45 years and they would have married and had many children, but he has always been hampered by the fact that he has no penis.

Ken went on to say, “If Barbie and I weren’t children of the repressed ’50s, our life would have been so, so much more fun. Hell, all these years I couldn’t figure out why we both had those stupid smiles on our faces. If only we had been anatomically correct in the wild 1970s.”

Ken spoke to this reporter of his plans to file an age-discrimination lawsuit against Mattel for dropping him at the ripe old age of 45. “I’m out of work. They [Mattel] used me — made millions of dollars from me and then they replaced me with

They probably sat around and giggled, “Let’s dump old, honest, reliable Ken. Let’s replace him with an Australian. Let’s put another shrimp on the Barbie.”

Ken said he also plans a sexdiscrimination lawsuit against Mattel, claiming that he was deprived of a penis for 45 years.

He added, “I never had a chance to express any sexual preference.

I never knew where I stood. Did I want Barbie? Did I want her girlfriend Skipper? Both of them at the same time? Or maybe I would have been happier cuddling in the jungle with GI Joe. Heck, if it worked out with Joe, we could have been happily married today. We could have had our wedding announced in the Sunday New York Times. Mattel took away my choice and now they must pay for it.”

Ken’s lawyer went on to say they have a great case and since Mattel is based in California, the case can be tried in front of a typical California jury. He then added, “That means Ken will have an opportunity to plead his case before a jury of his true peers — empty-headed, blond, plastic people.”

She has a message for Barbie.

Maybe the kids won’t want to play with you that much anymore, but their moms and aunts sure will.

Because once again, you’ll become a role model for a whole generation of us.

What’s New In Riverhead

Old Country Road, aka County Road 58, in Riverhead is blowing up with new businesses and expanded versions of old favorites.

On the western end of the East End shopping mecca, a giant new Walmart opened up near the Tanger outlet center. It boasts a huge garden center and a Subway fast food kiosk inside. A large, empty space in the shopping center portends still more shopping on the horizon.

Continuing east, still another mammoth mall nears completion next to the Riverhead Raceway.

It boasts a Dick’s sporting goods store as its anchor. A Christmas Tree store, the discount center Five Below, Aldi Food Market, and Buffalo Wild Wings are neighbors, as is a Starbucks (with drive-thru!). Vitamin Shoppe will be ready to open soon.

Joe’s Crab Shack opened in the Best Buy shopping center earlier this year and we hear the lines can wend their way out the door.

At least two more large tracts on 58 are for sale or already under development, and the old Walmart site has yet to find an occupant, so the coming months may see even more changes in the magnet shopping community.

Meanwhile, downtown. The Summerwind Square apartment complex in downtown Riverhead welcomed its first occupants last summer and continues to be a focal point in the area. Located on the first level of Summerwind, Joe’s Garage and Grill is a new edition to downtown eateries. It’s theme is. . . you guessed it, cars. Richie Nessel isn’t so sure being called an “old timer” is a compliment. “I don’t know how I got this old,” he remarked during a

recent jibe-laced text conversation.

“I wanted to do this because the historic aspect of fishing in Montauk, it’s gonna be gone some day. There aren’t that many people left who can talk about old Montauk, when fishing was fishing and we didn’t have all these regulations and quotas.”

Darenberg said he chose this year’s honorees because Richie Nessel kept coming up to him and nagging “Hey, Carl, I’m an old timer, why don’t you choose me?”

Richie and Jacob Nessel have made their living fishing in Montauk for over 50 years. They own their own boats and have also worked on various charter and party boats in the harbor.

Richie, who captains the “Nasty Ness,” recently received the Chester Wolf IGFA Sportsman Award at the First Annual Shark’s Eye Tournament, which is a tag and release event to promote conservation of sharks.

Richie was also instrumental in easing this year’s NY State fishing regulations and catch limits, specifically addressing the summer flounder restrictions. Concerned about the inequity -- neighboring states’ regulations are less stringent than New York’s -- he reached out to Governor Andrew Cuomo and invited him for a day of fishing on his boat, along with “crew” member Billy Joel.

With a new awareness, Cuomo successfully lobbied for a change in the daily bag limits by the DEC, which will have a very positive impact on charter and party boat business in Montauk Harbor this summer.

Jacob Nessel began fishing in Montauk with his dad back in 1951.

By 1955, fifteen-year-old Jake was already working as a deckhand on Montauk party boats on weekends and summer vacations. Captain Jake spent the next 15 years running the Marlin 3, 4 and 5. His own charter boat, “Sportfisher,” fished in 1994 and 1995 and since 1996 he has captained the Marlin 5/Ebb Tide.

Captain Jake’s many fishing highlights include two 18 pound fluke, a women’s world record 55 pound codfish and the current 50 pound world record codfish of 85 pounds. Jake also won the first ever Marine Basin Shark Tournament (then called Fins and Feathers) landing a 320 pound Mako.

The dinner takes place at the Clam and Chowder House at Salivar’s from 5 to 8 PM. Tickets for the event are $40, which includes dinner with wine or beer. The evening begins at 5 PM with a roast of both brothers and dinner will follow. Tickets are available at the Montauk Chamber of Commerce office, or by calling 631-668-2428.

Youth Needs Discussion In Flanders

The kids are all right.

Well, at least they will be after a forum of town and county officials on tap for tomorrow.

The needs of East End youth will be discussed at the David Crohan Community Center in Flanders tomorrow from 6:30 to 8 PM. According to a release from Southampton Town, a recent draft report by a sub-committee of the Suffolk County Youth Board Coordinating Council found that many young people on the East End are affected by the same socioeconomic and health issues as their counterparts further west.

“Some perceive the East End as an idyllic place, void of such things as teenage drug use or pregnancy,” said Nancy Lynott, a member of SCYBCC, “but we found the incidence of youth related problems is fairly consistent with the rest of Suffolk County, and in some instances, even greater.”

The event is sponsored by the Youth Bureaus of Southampton, Riverhead and Southold Towns as well as by Legislators Al Krupski and Jay Schneiderman. Southampton Councilman Brad Bender serves as youth bureau liaison.

“This forum is a huge step towards finding remedies to longstanding problems that affect youth in all communities including the East End,” he said.

The community center is located at 655 Flanders Road (Route 24). All members of the public are welcome to attend.

The Peconic Land Trust, an entity that’s been dedicated to conserving Long Island’s working farms, natural lands, and heritage for the community for 30 years, formerly held the development rights of said properties. The 33.08 acres was set to be sold for over $11 million after a public hearing yesterday. “ . . . it is felt that this acquisition is the best alternative for the protection of community character of all the reasonable alternatives

available to the town, and it was determined that said interests in real property should be purchased,” according to the resolution outlined in the town board’s agenda.

Hamlet Heritage Area Report, drafted last month, includes those situated from Cross River Drive/ County Road 105 to the west, the Peconic River, Reeves Bay and Goose Creek to the north, along Flanders Road, its several interconnecting and branching roads, to Red Creek Road to the east.

The site selection, according to town officials, evokes a strong sense of the character of the hamlet.

Historic features of the Flanders site selection include at least four 18th century and 22 19th century structures, as well as several cemeteries and farming sites.

On May 20 the East Hampton Town Board voted unanimously to establish the goal of meeting 100 percent of the town’s communitywide electricity needs with renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy by the year 2020.

Solar energy to generate electricity isn’t the only form of renewable energy board members hope to embrace. Last week, members also set a goal of meeting the equivalent to 100 percent of community wide energy consumption in all sectors – electricity, heating and transportation – with renewable energy sources by 2030.

“Our everyday lives are impacted by the effects of global warming.

We owe it to the children of East Hampton to do something about climate change and air pollution caused by fossil fuels,” said Town Councilwoman Sylvia Overby, the liaison on the Energy Sustainability Committee. “Meeting our future energy needs with clean, renewable energy sources will require a strong commitment from town government and all East Hampton residents. It is time and we are ready to face that challenge.”

The setting of an ambitious goal comes as the highly-charged summer season, with its peak demands, arrives. It also coincides with ongoing controversy over PSEG Long Island’s transmission system update, a project partially comprised of the installation of huge new poles that sparked the ire of community members.

The 100 percent goal was prompted by a unanimous recommendation from the Town’s Energy Sustainability Committee and builds on a Comprehensive Energy Vision document adopted by the town last October, according to a town release. The vision document called for establishing specific energy efficiency and renewable energy goals and timelines.

“Establishing goals for renewable energy is the lowest hanging fruit in sustainable energy practices since the technologies have advanced sufficiently to be efficient and cost effective,” said Frank Dalene, President of Telemark Inc., a Peconic Institute executive board member and chairman of the Town’s Energy Sustainability Committee.

“East Hampton will once more become a national leader environmentally, this time on a new frontier, in the sustainability and resilience front.”

Accidental Death A man who fell off a bluff at Hulse Landing Beach in Wading River on Sunday died from injuries he incurred. Matthew Grimaldi, 18, of Lake Grove, became impaled on a limb from a downed tree and was declared dead by ambulance personnel.

Outside, though, a drama was indeed playing out – an elderly woman had gone out for a walk and didn’t return home, prompting family members to become concerned.

East Hampton Town Police were called in. They learned Charlotte Silverberg, 80, of 6 Karin Drive was last seen at approximately 8 PM leaving the residence walking west toward Todd Drive. Silverberg suffers from Alzheimer’s, family members said.

Police issued Code Red Alert (reverse 911), which contacts all residents in the area. Shortly before midnight police found Silverberg near her house – dispatchers called back residents to inform them the woman had been found.

Town Police received a call from a man who said he had been attacked by another man wielding a crowbar.

The victim did not know where he was, but police found him at a residence on Hinda Boulevard and identified him as Daniel M. Russ.

He told them he was watching TV in the basement when his assailant struck him and fled the scene. Russ was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center but became uncooperative and eventually signed himself out.

Boardy Barn Ruckus Southampton Town Police were called to the Boardy Barn on May 18 and arrested Gabriel L. Narvaez, 24, of Southampton. Police said he struck a male suspect causing him to fall down and hurt his head.

The victim was transported to the hospital and Narvaez was charged with Third Degree Assault.

While this makes East Hampton the first municipal government in the State of New York, and possibly the East Coast to go 100 percent renewable, the effort is in line with a NY State Executive Order calling for an 80 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors by the year 2050 in order to mitigate climate change.

“His aggressive actions, disregard for his own personal safety and his ability to calmly treat the wounded in the face of continuous enemy fire were instrumental in the evacuation of four coalition soldiers from the IndependentAd_July12_Vert.pdf 1 battlefield,” the official citation states.

RICK’S SPACE Sibling Rivalries It’s tough being a little brother.

My sister Phyllis is a year older, so I’m always eating her dust so to speak.

She was the first to be pottytrained, though it should be noted she barely beat me. She was the first to take off the training wheels, the first to receive Confirmation, the first to hit puberty, and the first to lose her virginity (though not necessarily in that order).

She was the first to leave our house and go out on her own, the first to get married, the first to have a child (though not necessarily in that order), and the first to get divorced, the first to remarry, and so on.

It was during her first marriage she became involved in The Great Brooklyn Coupon Caper. At first it was innocuous stuff — “Look, 10 cents off a box of Kleenex!”

Then the deals started becoming more and more lucrative. Soon,

her basement and garage were filled to the brim. Scott tissues — hundreds of packages. Gleem toothpaste. Dishwashing detergent.

Post cereals, Scope mouthwash, paper towels — you name it, she had hundreds of them. When you visited Phyllis, you went home with a box full of goodies.

Since the Statute of Limitations has expired I can now reveal there was massive fraud going on. In addition to Grand Larceny there were numerous violations of the Interstate Commerce Act, post office fraud, and of course, counterfeiting.

I have never revealed this before because of the shame — this is the darkest secret of the Forcucci family – but on March 30, 1981 President Reagan got shot, and my sister was probably directly responsible.

That’s because counterfeiting is investigated by the U.S. Secret Service, which had its best agents

reassigned from Reagan to Brooklyn, where they were hunting down the Brooklyn Coupon Queen.

They never found her, but each agent went home with a box full of goodies. It’s like having Squeaky Fromme in the family.

It was about this time that Phyllis developed a Svengali-like stranglehold on our Aunt Adele.

Like Rasputin with the czar, Adele grew completely dependent on Phyllis and turned totally against me, even though I was younger, cuter and smarter.

I wouldn’t have cared except for the fact Adele was filthy rich.

When she passed on, Phyllis, who inherited vacation villas on three different continents, immediately retired. I need to work for 24 more years to pay off the mortgage on my singlewide in Appalachia.

O v e r 10 0 y e a r s a g o o u r grandfather, Henry Forcucci, was a young immigrant from Italy with virtually no money. But he had the foresight to purchase a plot at St. Andrews Cemetery where one day the entire Forcucci clan would once again be united.

I used to take great solace in that . . . but not anymore. It seems Papa, who wasn’t very good at math, miscalculated how many gravesites the family would need.

There is only one available spot left.

“If I die first I get it,” I told my mom emphatically.

She shook her head forlornly.

“Your Aunt Adele promised that spot to your sister,” she whispered.

Oh. Just like that. So while my entire family lies in eternal bliss

together, I will be relegated to the back of the cemetery with the thieves and town drunks (which is probably poetic justice). I will rest in the Tomb of the Unknown Forcucci.

The only good thing about growing old is I ascended to the top spot of the family hierarchy— or so I thought. Yeah, I was riding pretty high – until Phyllis remarried.

One day I was at our mom’s house when she told me the cable TV wasn’t working. “Don’t worry, I’ll fix it mommy,” I said confidently.

“No,” she replied, “Bo is coming over.”

Next month, same thing with the air conditioner. “No, don’t you touch it, you’ll ruin it. Bo said he’d come over and fix it.”

Then, the ultimate indignity.

“Mom, it’s time to go to the bank so you can make your withdrawal,” I said one day.

“From now on BO AND PHYLLIS will be taking me to the bank.”

So there it was.

Don’t worry about me. A can of pork and beans, a turpentine martini, my old DeSoto. I’ll be fine. My only consolation is I have a lifetime supply of Palmolive Dishwashing Soap.

Nevertheless, I put on a brave face Friday and trekked to Gargiulo’s in Brooklyn to celebrate Phyllis’s birthday (they let me in through the kitchen). She looked damn good — for her age, of course.

I may not be richer, but I’ll always be cuter and younger. But given all that transpired maybe she’s the smart one after all!

Burying Lines, Or Taxpayers?

The recent installation of new electric poles in East Hampton and several other communities have raised the ire of residents who rightfully believe the poles are an eyesore and pose unnecessary risks.

Burying power lines would certainly seem to be a solution we would all welcome.

That said, Assemblyman Fred Thiele and Senator Ken LaValle have introduced legislation in Albany that would allow municipalities to create taxing districts for that reason.

Sounds good? Sure. Consider, though, these men are politicians, and pressing the hot button is sure to ingratiate a block of voters when the next election comes.

But the legislation is myopic and misleading. It calls for the utility company – in this case PSEG - to bear half the cost of the project; those residents who will directly benefit from burying the lines would contribute toward the project, and all residents of the municipality would have to fork over the rest of it.

It sounds good – make the giant utility company pay the brunt of it. But consider that the public is PSEG’s only real source of funding.

We are rightly proud of our beautiful towns and villages. But so are lots of folks, lots of communities. Electric rates would rise dramatically, and if a significant amount of municipalities chose to bury lines the rate increase will be astronomical.

Politicians are good at spending the public’s money without telling them about it.

That’s exactly what LaValle and Thiele are doing here.

If we want to bury the lines let’s go for it. But let’s be clear: one way or the other, WE will be paying for it.

A Self Sustaining Airport? Really?

The East Hampton Town Board and Supervisor Larry Cantwell were downright gushy while embracing a new study that purports to prove the town airport could be self-sustaining without FAA subsidies.

Insufficient To the Editor, The Community Preservation Fund has secured large tracts of property from development since its institution in 1998.

This has not been achieved without costs and problems.

The foolish purchase of Keyes Island in 2005, and the gross misusage of the

fund by the McGintee administration are counterpoints to the successes of the fund and show the need for ongoing review of the fund and its expenditures.

Passage of time and current market conditions show that modification of both the Town Code and State Law regarding the Fund would be beneficial to the residents of the Town. More should be done to enable working families to remain or establish themselves in East Hampton and there is no reason to increase their costs.

The current $250,000 exemption from the tax on improved property is insufficient in current market conditions and subjects those who wish to relocate within the town or move from manufactured housing to an

“After three months of extensive research and analysis, the committee was unanimous in its determination,” crowed The East Hampton Star, without attribution.

Who said it was extensive? The committee? Isn’t that self serving? From what we’ve been told there were dissenting voices that chose to abstain rather than rock the boat, given the conclusion was inevitable before the study even began.

The elephant in the room? The study did not account for future legal fees, so how extensive could it be? The town knows full well that it faces legal challenges from helicopter operators, airport based pilots, businesses, and the FAA itself should it impose landing regulations deemed overly restrictive.

Who will cover the cost of the litigation? Couch it anyway you like – the taxpayers will end up footing the bill.

The report acknowledges that the facility and runways will require significant repairs. It proposes the town borrow the money and repay it with airport revenues.

What if additional repairs are needed? Some estimates say up to $10 million will be needed over the next decade.

In the past airport revenue was thrown in the town’s General Fund and the FAA funded most repairs. Without the FAA infusion, a shortfall seems inevitable.

Like Democratic-controlled boards earlier in the decade, this board seems compelled to borrow and spend. In recent weeks there have been a half-dozen pricey projects approved, and more are coming.

Maybe this study is a good first step. Or maybe it’s the first of many salvos designed to erode popular support for the airport. There is ample reason to suspect the ultimate goal of the Gruberites is to close the facility; that would be disaster for this entire region. onerous burden.

We propose changes in the Town Code §112-2-40.Additional Exemptions. A. There shall be allowed an exemption of $250,000 on the consideration of improved real property or an interest therein and B. There shall be allowed an exemption of $100,000 on the consideration of unimproved real property or an interest therein. The exemptions should be raised to $500,000 and $250,000 respectively.

The town board should concurrently request legislation changing Article 31-D Tax Law §1449-ee. Exemptions.3. (a) which establishes the current amount of the exemptions. This could save residents purchasing a house up to $5000.

We also propose that any purchase using Community Preservation Funds be subject to referendum upon petition.

Large purchases of millions of dollars should be subject to the ballot if sufficient residents subscribe to a petition. Currently, purchases made using community preservation funds must undergo a hearing but the public has no ability to say no to a purchase.

The Town Board should seek legislation amending Town Law §64-e.Peconic Bay region community preservation funds to achieve this basic equity and amend Town Code Chapter 112.Community Preservation accordingly.

Same Values Dear Mr. Murphy, A problem facing Republicans may be the failure to understand the extent to which grass roots movements mistake insularity for small-town values. In an article entitled “The War on Women,” The New York Times columnist, Ross Douthat, who writes from what appears to be a Christian Conservative point of view, argued that “liberal” women who venture into the “terrain” of political activism tend to be unfairly criticized by conservatives (NYT 1/12/14).

Mr. Douthat’s theories are the product of a deep understanding of the role of conservatism in American history and politics. However, the farther one travels from big city or university environments, the less analytical conservative thought can become. This is not to argue that views of women necessarily differ by locality but rather to make the argument that scapegoating women can more easily permeate the bureaucracy of local governments . . . especially when reinforced by the local establishment press.

Mr. Douthat does make another point. He observes that misogyny is not the sole provenance of the Republicans as proven by liberal party attacks on Sarah Palin.

Unfortunately, at the local level, Republicans may ignore conduct by Democrats that would be frowned upon in a larger political arena. As a result opportunities are lost. The problem lies not in any belief system which must be respected but rather in the failure to distinguish between institutional responsibility and personal beliefs.

Has anyone you know served in the military?

Sidney Winawer I was a Captain in the Tactical Air Force Command. We flew with composite strike forces all over the world. Bombers, refueling tankers and fighters. Memorial Day is a very sad day, thinking of all the men and women who never came home.

Lisa Jones My brother, Timothy Jones, served in the Navy during Desert Storm. He was a nurse, on the front lines. I also had a nephew who served in the Navy. And I have a nephew who is also in the Navy, currently serving in Afghanistan. I’m so proud of all of them.

Fred Butti My neighbor served in the Military. His name is John McGuirk Jr. He’s a very fine man and a great neighbor. I don’t know any of the details.

I’m assuming he served in the Korean War. He doesn’t speak about it much at all.

Chris D’Acunto Here’s a picture of my grandfather, Joseph McKim. He was in WWII. He didn’t talk about it much. But once I wrote a story for school and needed to know what the most powerful gun was. He told me a German Luger could shoot through almost anything.

This level of acceptability has provided her with an opportunity to ignore institutional responsibilities because Republicans may not demand that she do so. On the other hand, Michael Bloomberg, the former Mayor of New York, a Republican who ran as an Independent, was consistently held to a higher management standard.

Yet from a grass-roots point of view Bloomberg is less desirable than, say, a

candidate from upstate who supported drunk driving, tax evasion, grifting, out of wedlock children, business failures, and treating women disrespectfully.

The upstate Republican lost to a Democrat whereas a large body of evidence (which I’m happy to share) proves Southampton Democrats embrace the same values as the upstate Republican. Yet in Southampton, Democrats won. Something to think about.

Order Of Protection For Rape Victim hiding in the backseat of his car.

Last Friday Suffolk County Court Judge Barbara Kahn today granted an application filed by the DA’s office for a temporary order of protection to protect the rape victim from being contacted by her alleged assailant - or any person he sends to contact her.

“This court order will provide a level of protection for the victim of this crime, now at home in her native Ireland, who feels that has been harassed and intimidated by visitors in the employ of the defendant, Jason Lee,” Spota said. “ We are pleased the court included in the order of protection a specific provision not only barring the defendant from any contact

Jason Lee’s alleged victim feels intimidated. According to Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota, the victim has been visited by representatives from Lee who was indicted by a grand jury on charges of rape in the first degree, sexual misconduct and assault in the third degree. East Hampton Town Police arrested the 37-year-old Wall Street banker last August.

He’s accused of raping a young woman in his rental home. The victim told police she was assaulted in a downstairs bathroom. Police, who were called to the house on an unrelated matter and then were informed of the rape, found Lee

with our victim and, importantly, to refrain from communication with her through third parties.”

Spota continued, “This victim has told us she felt intimidated by the emissary sent to speak to her by the defendant, and that she feels she is being watched, increasing her fear and causing her great distress . . .

“She is the victim of a brutal crime and we believe this courtauthorized protection will bar further harassment as we move forward toward trial.”

The DA’s office request that Lee surrender his passport was granted by the court at the defendant’s arraignment last September.

Panel Discussion On Tick Diseases Here on the East End, tick-borne disease has become almost commonplace. And because of that, last week Southampton Hospital launched a Tick-Borne Disease Resource Center, with goals to educate the public, facilitate access to diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease, and promote collaboration in the medical community.

A free panel discussion hosted by the hospital will be held at Parrish Memorial Hall on Herrick Road in Southampton Saturday, June 7, at 10:30 AM. Rajeev S. Fernando, MD, Director of Infectious Disease at the hospital, along with George Dempsey and Gerald Simons, of East Hampton Family Medicine, and Anthony Knott, of Meeting House Lane Medical Practice in Montauk, will be the guest speakers. Space is limited, so call 631-726-0452 to reserve a seat.

Doctors and medical professionals across nearly a dozen specialties, including pediatrics, rheumatology and emergency medicine, are joining forces to make up the center’s advisory panel.

This collaboration is slated to improve the ability to fight the effects of tick-borne diseases and advance education on prevention and treatment options, according to a press release from the hospital.

Three Way Street It’s early morning and a misty rain cools the air. The dog generally does not like getting wet but the soggy grass seems to just meet what he deems acceptable. He sniffs all corners of the lawn and takes his time before heading inside for breakfast.

My schedule will be different

than usual this morning so I start things off with a few sun salutations followed by a large glass of water to wake myself up. Loki follows suit with a couple of downward dogs and then decides to take a nap. I laugh to myself thinking about how he flows effortlessly with the energy of the day, dogs always offer the best

reminder to be in the present.

I had a set plan and list of tasks for today but the energy in the air is slower than I had planned and the rain certainly changes things. I take a long, deep breath and set the intention to align with the present moment.

Today I start my day by facilitating an Energy Healing and I’m up early to prepare. This work is sacred for me. I am always honored to do what I do and this morning I’m working with someone new so I have a special focus on how I set up. and there is a knock at the door.

Loki gets overly excited and starts racing about looking for his bone to chew. Usually he falls asleep within the first ten minutes of a treatment once things have calmed down, but not always. The dog’s energy tends to mirror my own as well as my client’s.

He has his own role in the healing, helping to put people at ease and connect them to a natural rhythm. If someone is revved up, anxious or frazzled Loki will demand attention in the beginning, which seems to redirect and shift their focus.

The Energy Healing process augments the body’s natural ability to heal.

A technique called chelation directs the energy to where it is needed. This is the starting point. As the facilitator, I tune in and tune out (a meditative state and clear mind is necessary). The dog’s light snoring and soft music completely drop away. Energy connects everything and so, healing becomes more than a two way street.

The energy flows through me as well as my client. In this place of non-thought my senses expand.

It’s wonderful to be in this space beyond intellectual focus while also learning, shifting and receiving information in a different way.

By the end, I feel recharged and energized and my client is very relaxed.

I realize now that when I awoke, I felt a heaviness in connection with the rain and grey outside. Now, I feel peaceful and clear, I know what comes next.

While I go over the session with my client, Loki gets up and joins in by sitting at his feet with a wagging tail. I think about how my senses become more acute during a session and how many of the dog’s senses probably operate in a similar way all the time. My client will experience this as well.

And so, often, Loki is my healing partner. Most importantly, he helps me to carry the experience throughout my day -- to merge healing with the day to day in life and with the present moment. How do your pets work with you in this process?

Tuckers County Title; Baywomen Still Alive

They are a resourceful bunch, these Tuckers.

Mattituck, locked in a deadly struggle with a tough, resilient Center Moriches team, needed to find a way to win the third and decisive game.

Mattituck had been here before – last year — and fell to Southampton in a similar situation. On Friday, playing at home, Mattituck’s ace, Marcus Perivolaris, was hurling a gem. The trouble was the Red Devil’s Dan Franchi was on his game as well and the pair were trading zeroes.

Ian Nish worked Franchi for a walk in the fourth inning, and it proved to be the big right-hander’s

undoing. Nish advanced on an infield single off the bat of his twin brother, Jamie, and darted to third on a wild pitch. When Brian Pelan dribbled a slow roller towards second, Nish took off and slid into home. It would prove to be the only run of the day.

Pe r i v o l a r i s , a j u n i o r w a s masterful throughout, yielding only four hits while running his record to 7-0. Franchi was equally stingy for Center Moriches (14-8).

The Tuckers, now 20-3, move on to play Wheatley, the Nassau Class B and defending Long Island champion, on June 6 at Farmingdale State.

In the Suffolk County softball championships, one local team

remains – the pesky Hampton Bays Baywomen, a team that refuses to die.

On Saturday Hampton Bays emerged from the loser’s bracket to stun Babylon 4-3, staving off elimination and setting up the second game of the best of three today.

Jamie DiPierdomenico scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth, racing home on a Taylor Dunn bunt to break the tie. Marley Tyler, who laced an rbi double in the sixth to know the game at three, went all the way to record the W,

striking out five and allowing only one earned run and four hits.

Babylon had crushed the locals on May 20, 12-1, sending Hampton Bays into the losers’ bracket. But the Baywomen shut down Mercy 6-0 Friday, earning another shot at the title. Marley spun a two hitter and struck out eight in that one, and Laura Zaweski and Jade Zaluski each went 2-3 to spark the offense.

Hampton Bays needs to win today to stay alive. Should that occur the finale is set for Friday, weather permitting.

Tanaka Time It was just over four months ago when many were debating whether or not the Yankees should spend big money to sign Japanese ace Masahiro Tanaka. Yes, he had a brilliant career with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, capped off with a 24-0 record and 1.27 ERA in 2013.

But, how would that translate to the Big Leagues? The competitiveness of Japanese baseball is often considered between AAA and the Majors, referred to as “quadruple A” ball. But, as Tanaka’s dominance has carried over to the rugged AL East, his success continues to give the Yankees the first, and last laugh.

The Yankees had failed plenty of times with free agents, even those from Japan (see: Igawa, Kei).

Despite these misses, the Yankees were coming off a season without a playoff appearance, declining YES ratings, and a Red Sox World Series title. This wasn’t a time to be prudent.

The Yankees invested $175 million for Tanaka’s services, and as expected, many baseball executives had to pick their jaws off the floor.

They insisted the “big, bad Yankees” were once again artificially inflating the market for a player who had never thrown a pitch at the Major

League level.

Maybe their plan was to make their offer so exorbitant that Tanaka wouldn’t consider an attractive option on the West Coast (Dodgers).

Or, maybe they saw a player mature beyond his 25 years of existence, a pitcher who can throw seven pitches for a strike, and has precise control.

Plus, the Yankee blueprint to success has continued to take hits. As teams continue to lock up their young players to long term deals, free agency becomes less potent each offseason. The Yankees haven’t done a good job developing prospects, and still rely far too heavily on the open market. But, with the diminishing returns on C.C. Sabathia, a 39-year old Hiroki Kuroda, and many question marks in the rotation, Tanaka was their lone hope to be a potential front of the rotation force.

It was a risk that was well worth taking. Even so, it has certainly paid off more than Brian Cashman could’ve predicted. After another strong outing Sunday against the White Sox (6 2/3 IP, 5 H, 1 ER), Tanaka is now 7-1 with a 2.29 ERA, and nearly an 8:1 strikeout to walk ratio. He’s put himself in the early discussion for AL Cy Young, joining

the A’s Sonny Gray, Blue Jays’ Mark Buehrle, and Yu Darvish of the Rangers.

The next hurdle for Tanaka to clear is adjusting as he begins to consistently face teams for the second and third time. Tanaka has only pitched against one team twice, the Cubs, and he lost, allowing 4 runs and 8 hits in 6 innings.

Quick Honey, Put On A Life Jacket!

A number of years ago, as I was doing a (free) vessel exam for the owner of a very substantial yacht, I got to the part where I ask to see the life jackets. He directed me to a locker, which I opened to find the life jackets, stowed under an anchor, chain and additional rode.

This column is about that.

No Good If You Can’t Get To Them I promptly asked him, “Sir, do you have any grandchildren?”

“Why, yes, I do. Five of them. Why do you ask?” he said.

I replied, “Imagine what forces you will be under when you say these words to your grandchildren, ‘Quick! Put on a life jacket!’ and you point to this locker. Which one of your grandchildren will be able to move this anchor to get to the life jackets – which are still in their wrappers, btw.” He blanched.

No safety equipment is of any use if you can’t get to it. Or, no one knows where it is except you, the

skipper, who is likely to be mighty busy just when safety equipment is needed. Talk about pressure!

Pre-Underway Check List

By USCG regulations, before we leave the dock on a mission – of any type or any duration – we must, as a crew, go through a check-list akin to a vessel exam. This includes, among many items, knowing the location of: The extra life jackets (we must have ours on at all times, which is an excellent idea, skipper); The medical kit – doublechecking that none of the perishable supplies have, in fact, perished due to the passage of time; The “visual distress signals”, i.e., flares – and that they have not expired and are serviceable; The boat hook, a good tool for retrieving something -- or someone -- that may be just out of reach; The Man Overboard “apparatus”,

i.e., line and ring to throw to someone who has fallen overboard.

This list is by no means exhaustive but it represents some of the major categories of potential disaster that may befall a skipper. While you are dealing with the boat and how it needs to be used to respond to the emergency, your crew can be dealing with the crew’s response.

Whether it be a grounding or far worse, a vessel sinking, you as the skipper have a lot on your mind and a lot to deal with. Can you imagine yourself also having to stop handling the emergency so that you can direct crew to emergency equipment that will protect them and you from the effects of that emergency?

Everyone Has A Pressure Point . . . beyond which, they start to crack. What do you do if the crew can’t handle the pressure as well as you are handling it?

boat with the location of all the equipment labeled? Seriously, of all the risks that you spend time and money in preparing for and against, have you thought about panic as a risk? What then?

“Honey, hey, enough! Here, look at this – right now – and go get everybody in life jackets. Now!” It is likely to reduce the panic because now the crew has something to focus on other than the water sloshing on the floorboards.

Shorebound/Beaches/Canal The canal bite has been slow on the weakfish and fluke but heating up on the blowfish. High-low rigs tipped with a small flag of squid or

clam will land you the “chicken of the sea.”

This bite is usually short lived, so plan a trip soon. Porgies should begin showing down at the north end of the canal any day.

Over at the ocean beaches both blues and a few bass have been taken on diamond jigs and bucktails in the early mornings and late evenings.

Ponquogue Bridge is holding a few keeper bass taken on bunker chunks along with a few blues.
