A SECRET This is our secret. We’re going to quietly discuss something you haven’t dared tell anyone, including your spouse or your best friends. It’s something that probably has you a little ashamed, to the point that you won’t even admit it to yourself. Let’s get it out and we’ll both feel better. I’ve admitted it, and when you do,

you’ll feel a lot better. Tell the truth: You’ve been secretly rooting for Richard Matt and David Sweat, the two escaped killers from the Clinton (did they name it after Bill or Hillary?) Correctional Facility in Dannemora, NY, to get away. Free, scot free, never to be seen again. You want them to stay free despite the fact that thousands of law enforcement people with guns and bloodhounds and all that stuff

are chasing them. You’re not alone – the entire nation is secretly rooting for them. But now let’s recite these five points, to lessen your guilt about rooting for these two bad guys to win: 1. You admit they did horrible things, are disgusting people and deserved to be in jail. 2. You don’t want anyone to get hurt. 3. If you should see them, you would turn them in. 4. You know they’re evil guys and you promise this is the last time you’re going to root for bad guys to get away. If only you hadn’t seen all those George Raft prison pictures. And you remember how heroic Clint Eastwood was in Escape from Alcatraz. 5. You’re happy for CNN and The New York Post, since this is the kind of funky prison breakout that comes once in a lifetime, gets ratings and sells newspapers. OK, that’s over, now we can enjoy the juicy details. How dumb are the people searching for the escapees? They are in the second week of their escape and the searchers are still searching within five miles of the prison. Do they think Matt and Sweat crawled away on their hands and knees? Searching that close to the prison after all these days reminds me of an old moron joke. A man comes upon a moron searching for something under a streetlight. “Lose something?” he asks. Moron answers, “I lost my wallet

IN THE NEWS

about a mile and a half up the road.” “So why are you looking here?” the man asks. The moron answers, “Because the light’s better here.” Governor Andrew Cuomo (who, when he looks sad, which is always, sort of looks like a bloodhound) has been all over this case. In a classic case of searching the barn after the horse got out, our Governor has had a lot of photo ops looking at the manhole the prisoners came out of after their daring breakout. Then, of course, let’s talk about Joyce “Tillie” Mitchell, a tailor shop supervisor at the Correctional Facility, who provided the inmates with blades, drill bits and other tools that helped them break out. Joyce is not the best-looking person to be a femme fatale in a prison escape. In fact, The New York Post has started calling Joyce the “Shaw-skank,” after the popular prison escape movie The Shawshank Redemption. Another one of my favorite Post headlines is: “Prison Break Skank Kinky In The Clinky.” Let’s say the fact that both men have been in prison for years may have contributed to her allure. I can see how this escape plot unfolded, with Matt and Sweat fighting over who was going to seduce Joyce first. “You do it.” “No, you do it.” “You do it.” “No, you do it.” “You’re here on a life sentence – you have nothing to lose.” As it turns out, they both lost. David Sweat, the lifer, lost the coin toss and had sex with Mrs. Mitchell first. But, according to sources, the other killer, Richard Matt, also had sex with her, and he sweet-talked Joyce into helping them escape by leading her to believe “there was something more between them.” Speaking of “something more . . .” To top everything off, the Post breathlessly reported last week that Matt is “incredibly well-endowed.” Now that’s what I call real investigative journalism. What’s New In East Hampton? There are never too many spas in The Hamptons, so it stands to reason there are never too many Little Bird Spas in The Hamptons. East Hampton Village is the new home of the newest Little Bird in the space that used to be the Bridgehampton Bank on Park Place – that’s the Ruetershan parking lot behind Main Street. Little Bird offers authentic Chinese Reflexology, facials, beauty massages and waxing. There is also a Little Bird Foot Spa in Westhampton Beach and a Healing Spa in Southampton. Want run into Sarah Jessica, Sofia V., Shakira, or maybe all three beauties? They are all disciples of Anne Kaiser, whose AKT InMotion dance studio is open at 3 Railroad Avenue. Gwyneth and her pals might prefer Tracey Anderson, which offers fitness classes and sells lifestyle wear. It’s on 30 Park Place. There is a new Planet Blue at 50 Newtown Lane and there will be some nifty trunk shows during the summer. Elements Fitness Studio, at 66 Newtown Lane, is a retail boutique offering the finest in active wear.

Independent/Rick Murphy

Want sunglasses? Oliver Peoples at 53 Newtown Lane is the place. Pilates? Tine Stephens, right down the block at #66. If vintage is your game, look no further than around the corner, where What Goes Around Comes Around has set up shop at 48 Main Street. Want noodles? Get noodles and much more at Moni Ramen on Pantigo Road. The wheat noddles are made fresh all day long and served with, among other goodies, oxtail, tuna and pork belly. There are also salads, dumplings and wraps. It’s at 221 Pantigo. Barbecue enthusiasts can venture out to Napeague and try @Bernies, which isn’t an email address. It’s where the Inn at Napeague was, on

2095 Montauk Highway. J. Crew, temporarily closed because of an ill-timed fire, has quickly regrouped. A pop up store at 17 Newtown Lane, formerly occupied by Kate Spade Crew is open and ready for action. If you like Pepperoni’s in the OneStop shopping center in Springs try Ryder’s Wings next door. It’s run by the same people and take it from us, there’s good eatin’ in there – the Indy crew chowed down there the other day. There are 13 different sauces for the wings, terrific fried shrimp, burgers, salads, and quesadillas. Osteria Salina has moved from Bridgehampton to Wainscott in the space formerly occupied by Georgica. Its calling card is

authentic Sicilian like Polpo Eoliano (charred octopus) Bucatini con Sarde (sardines) and an excellent Linguine Pescatore (shell fish stew). M.X.L.

It Takes A Village, Maybe By Emily Toy

The creation of a village may very well be the kick needed for bettering Hampton Bays. For years now, residents of the area just west of the Shinnecock Canal have been exploring the option of creating an incorporated village for the hamlet. If successful, it would be the eighth independent village within Southampton Town. The Hampton Bays Village Exploratory Committee was formed, set to determine if the creation of an incorporated village will be beneficial to Hampton Bays. At the beginning of the month, on June 7, the committee hosted a pancake breakfast at the Ponquogue

Avenue Firehouse to raise money, and awareness for the group. “Hampton Bays should be a better version of what it is now,” according to the non-profit group’s Facebook page. “Currently, Hampton Bays has a large year round population and a village that doesn’t turn into a ghost town in the winter.” Some of the benefits surrounding incorporating the village include increasing the sense of community identity and quality of life, with a focus on better property values, better schools and a better downtown. Incorporating the village would see village services replacing town ser vices. Not only would this

be good for morale, it would be more convenient if something, such as a building permit, was needed, one would only have to go to Hampton Bays to get it, as opposed to traveling all the way to downtown Southampton. It would also promote the idea of not having an additional layer of government. The village would not be providing redundant services. The incorporation may also promote an increase in revenue. Traffic/parking tickets would be paid to Hampton Bays directly to the village, as opposed to going back into Southampton Town. Another financial boost could be a more stabilized school tax. For years now,

the HB school tax has been growing exponentially, from year to year. Studies show that villages that incorporate have drops in school enrollment. This means it may even lower school taxes for the hamlet. The need for home rule over code enforcement was another spoke in the wheel incorporation, according to the Hampton Bays Civic Association. “With no local governing body we are reliant on Southampton Town to make the decisions that affect us the most,” a recent post said. “Southampton Town is made up of diverse communities from Westhampton to Sag Harbor that have interests and priorities that are often quite different from Hampton Bays. What’s presumed good for the town is not always what’ good for Hampton Bays.

Happy Birthday, Southampton! How old are you now? Make that 375. And make time for a birthday celebration replete with cake and music at the Rogers Mansion on Meeting House Lane in Southampton. On Saturday from 11 AM to 5 PM, admission to the museum is free, and free family memberships will be available to those who show up and sign up. (It’s usually $35.) Tours of the museum will be offered and from 4 to 5 PM the Sag Harbor Community Band will perform music from the Great American Song Book with a community singalong. At 5 PM, it’s cake and ice cream time.

Instead, Giglo will run with retired Riverhead police officers, Tim Hubbard and Bob Peeker, as running mates. “I ran campaigns for Sean but gradually I became disenchanted,” Coates said. “Sean can be extremely polarizing.” He will run with Neil Krupnick and Laura Jens Smith. Coates opined that the town has not lived up to expectations under Walter. “We have the lowest rated bond rating in the state, we built up Route 58 and spent all the tax revenue.”

Coates charged Walter with dragging his heels on the EPCAL development, which has languished for years. “There is not one application for final site plan approval. There is no final subdivision map.” The downtown renovation project is once again languishing. “We have buildings decaying downtown because they don’t enforce the code. We are going backwards.” Coates feels he is in a good position, with the spectre of the Republicans splitting the ticket a very real possibility at this point.

Garbage District Nixed The Flanders, Riverside and Northampton communities will not be seeing their own garbage district any time soon. The Flanders/Riverside/ Northampton Community Association had previously asked Southampton Town to look into what it would take to establish a garbage district in the area. In an effort to get a sense of what such a service would cost taxpayers, the town issued a bid asking prices for weekly refuse pick up, given certain specifications, according to a press release from the town earlier this month. The lowest bid that was reasonable came in at about $25 per month, an amount that would be charged to each residential property owner’s tax bill. That’s all well and good, but after considering the proposal, the town board opted to stop the pursuit. A letter was mailed to over 2000 property owners inviting them to an

information meeting held May 15, hosted by Councilman Brad Bender. Councilpersons Bridget Fleming, Christine Scalera and Stan Glinka attended. During the meeting, there were many in favor of the garbage district, yet the majority, by a show of hands, was against it. There were two main reasons naysayers spoke of: the loss of choice in selecting a carter, and fear that the monthly charge would dramatically increase after the first year, thereby increasing their tax bills. “Unfortunately, the public sentiment is against the formation of a garbage district at this time,” Bender said. “I still believe that providing this service to the Flanders, Riverside, and Northampton areas is a great idea- one that would go a long way to improving both property values and pride of place. Perhaps it is an idea whose time has not yet come, but one which bears revisiting in the future.” E.T.

Bless The Fleet, The Fishing, And The Season It’s been a tradition in Montauk since 1955. Boaters gather each spring for the annual Blessing of the Fleet. With scores of vessels lining up in the lake, the Blessing serves as both a somber memorial for local fishermen, deckhands and captains of myriad types of boats and a festive celebration of the fishing season. It’s an unofficial touchstone signifying the beginning of summer. From the town dock where blessings are bestowed by local clergy, boats continue out to Block Island Sound to cast memorial wreaths in memory of those who lost their lives into the sea. - James J. S chool D ays Hampton Bays School With watering cans and shovels in hand, Hampton Bays Elementary School students took turns planting lettuce and watering the district’s community garden during planting day on June 3. The event, said Judith Leopard, garden coordinator for the elementary school, gave students the opportunity to learn about the garden, the food that is grown there and about the school’s new greenhouse. The garden’s roots are now five-years-old with Joan Moran, garden coordinator for the middle school, bringing it to fruition after obtaining a grant from Cornell Cooperative Extension. The garden, with the assistance of students and community gardeners, provides fresh food to the middle school cafeteria and pounds of produce to the Church of St. Rosalie’s food pantry. Tuckahoe School Students in Mrs. Antoinette Miller and Ms. Jean Dodici’s second

grade class visited Hallockville Museum and Farm to get a firsthand experience on how life was lived in the past. The students had the opportunity to wash clothes on an old fashioned washboard, grind corn to feed the chickens, make molasses cookies on a wood burning stove, and tour the old barns and homestead. The Pre-K classes along with Kindergarten classes planted pumpkin seeds for the Tuckahoe Community Garden. Children examined the differences between two different types of pumpkin seeds comparing sizes, texture, and appearance. Each student had an opportunity to dig a hole and drop a seed in. The Pre-K classes revisited the potatoes they planted to see the growth and fruits of their labor from earlier this spring. St. Baldrick’s is coming to Tuckahoe on Tuesday, June 23rd, in the morning! Ross School There’s a new tradition in the making at Ross Lower School. Earlier this week, fourth graders “broke ground” to create a Native American garden in the field outside the Green Building. Another New Nominee Is that their final answer? Another GOP designee has dropped out of the race for East Hampton Town Board and been replaced. Margaret Turner will take the place on the ticket vacated last week by Nancy Keeshan. Turner joins Lisa Mulhern-Larsen who earlier this month replaced the original designee Len Czajka. Turner and Mulhern-Larsen join supervisor hopeful Tom Knobel at the top of the Republican ticket. Knobel served on the town board during the 90s and while Turner never served in an elected town position before, she’s logged many hours in town board meetings and work sessions in her role as executive director of the East Hampton Business Alliance. Barn Swallows At SoFo By Frank Quevedo

Barn Swallows are migratory and arrive on Long Island from Central and South America in mid-April to establish nesting sites. They typically build nests under eaves of

roofs, under bridges, or in barns as their name implies. They are small in size, five to seven inches long, with rust-colored breasts and blue-black upper parts and pointed wings. They are swift

flyers and can be seen hunting for insects by swooping and darting over ponds and fields. Currently there are several breeding pairs of barn swallows that have chosen the South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) as their nesting site. They construct their nest from dirt and saliva, then attach it to the wall for support as a mud shelf. They then shape it into a bowl. Once the nest has taken shape, they begin to line the inner bowl with grass and feathers for nesting. A female barn swallow can lay between four and six eggs. Throughout the incubation period,

which lasts about 14 days, the female rotates each egg often to keep the entire egg warm and developing properly. The male stands guard on a nearby post or tree adjacent to the nest ready to defend it. In the evening, he joins his mate in the nest and sleeps alongside her until he takes his post again the next morning. Once the eggs have hatched, both parents will proceed to feed their young throughout the day. When feeding their nestlings, swallows carry several insects at a time to the nest, packing them together into a ball that they carry in their throats. A pair of swallows may bring up to 400 separate meals per day to their nestlings. After 20 to 30 days of nestling, the young birds will take that leap of faith for their inaugural flight. The SoFo Live Birdcam is back in production. The video camera has been placed and aimed at an active barn swallow nest at the front door of the museum and the young have just hatched! The camera is connected to a monitor inside the museum for all to view this miracle of life. The museum is open seven days a week from 10 AM to 4 PM. Frank Quevedo is the executive director of the South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton. SoFo’s mission is to stimulate interest in, advance knowledge of, and foster appreciation for the natural environment, with special emphasis on the unique natural history of Long Island’s South Fork.

Independent Opinion

The First Five Months By Lee Zeldin

During my first few months as your Congressman, I have been working to help grow our economy and create more good paying private sector jobs, fight for our veterans who fought for us, strengthen our borders and America’s interests abroad, and improve healthcare and education in our nation. I serve on three U.S. House Committees: Transportation & Infrastructure, Foreign Affairs and Veterans’ Affairs, as well as several House subcommittees, including the Subcommittee on Aviation, which I serve as Vice Chairman. I also serve as co-chairman of the House Republican Israel Caucus. With the importance of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, giving Congress a final say if there is a nuclear agreement, and effectively confronting ISIS, I’ve been outspoken on the national level for America to pursue a stronger, more consistent foreign policy. Locally, I’ve been working hard on issues related to helicopter noise challenges, launching the Downtown Montauk Project, and stopping the Cross Sound Enhancement Project. In Congress, I co-sponsored the Student Testing Improvement & Accountability Act (HR 452) to roll back federally mandated testing in our schools, and introduced the Zeldin Amendment to allow states to withdraw from Common Core without penalty from the federal government. I have also introduced Long Island specific bills, like the Fluke Fairness Bill and legislation to protect Plum Island, and bills to help our veterans, such as the first bill I introduced, which would help veterans applying for VA home loans. I also announced an agreement with Peconic Bay Medical Center for an East End health care facility for veterans and their families, which will increase access to care for veterans who live on Long Island’s East End. After so bravely serving our country, this facility will open up an important new option for veterans while still allowing them to continue receiving other ser vices and ongoing treatment at the VA Hospital in Northport. There’s a lot more to be done, and I will continue working

tirelessly for our community. To learn more about my efforts in Congress, you can visit my website at zeldin.house.gov, which is frequently updated on my work on Long Island and Washington, DC and allows you to subscribe to my e-newsletter for email updates on issues that I’m working on. You can also connect with me on Facebook at https://www. facebook.com/RepLeeZeldin and you can follow me on Twitter @ RepLeeZeldin. If I can ever be of assistance to you, please contact my Long Island Office, which is located at 31 Oak Street, Suite 20, in

Patchogue, or my Washington, DC Office, which is located at 1517 Longworth House Office Building. You can also call us at 631-2891097 or 202-225-3826. If you have any questions or concerns, or need help on a federal issue, I encourage you to take full advantage of my East End mobile office hours Friday, June 19, 2015, from 11 AM to 1 PM, at Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts Center, which is located at 20 East Main Street in Riverhead. RICK’S SPACE What’s In Your Wallet?

In my day it was essential guys carry a wallet around, probably because it was a sign of masculinity and a measure of a man’s wealth. Usually the most successful men had bulging wallets filled with important cards and cash. (Remember cash?) There were no credit cards around, but some guys had so much stuff in their wallets they needed rubber bands to keep it together. Gathering legitimate items for your wallet took years. My first card was a library card, which was tucked forlornly in my otherwise empty wallet. That’s because no kid had dollar bills in those days, and on the rare occasion we did we would spend them immediately on candy and baseball cards. When we were 14 we would go down to the post office and get a Social Security card. This was a major event, but in retrospect I don’t know why – it really wasn’t good for anything except getting working papers, and

no self-respecting 14 year old chose to work when we could hang out in the schoolyard and smoke instead. Next would come our driver’s license, which you could get at 16 if you took a course. The biggie, of course, was your draft card, which made you eligible to die in some obscure Asian country at the hands of some angry inhabitant. More important, it allowed you to buy liquor and drink in bars, though I must admit most of us in Sag Harbor started drinking in the Black Buoy when we were 16 thanks to impeccably crafted phony draft cards my friend Frank Pintauro sold for a very reasonable $5. (I can reveal it now because Frank has passed on.) They were so good that even though I looked all of 10 I convinced many a bartender that if I was old enough to die for my country then damn it, I was old enough to drink in public. That made for a rather awkward 18th birthday celebration at that very

bar when Rose Black pointed out I had been a regular for two years already. Most of us always kept a Trojan inside the folds of our wallet, not so much because we anticipated using it – it was there mostly to impress the other guys. “Rick, you think you’re going to get lucky this weekend?” a friend would ask after seeing the foil wrapped item. “Like always. I have a whole box in my room.” “You’re gonna get laid 12 times in one weekend?” “Actually I have a box of 144.” So where was I? Oh right – Uber. After all the brouhaha last week, I decided to apply for my Uber license so I could do a first hand story on all the turmoil and get another official piece of cardboard for my wallet. I texted them, noting I have a brand new SUV that seats eight and I have a spotless driver’s license. You would think that would just about do it, right? Not quite. I need a valid Social Security card. I don’t know about the rest of you but I haven’t seen my Social Security card since I lost my wallet when I was 18. (Actually, someone probably stole it and used the Trojan – on my girl, no less.) So I called Uber. “Listen,” I said, “I have a driver’s license, a U.S. passport, an autographed Mickey Mantle 1956 Topps card, and two prophylactics in my wallet. Isn’t that enough?”

IN THE NEWS

Negative. What else do I need? “A medical examination.” “Can’t I just turn my head and cough over the phone?” I asked. No go. I pointed out that the last exam I had, the doctor gave me five years to live, so I still have a couple more to make my fortune by transporting yuppies and guppies around Montauk in the middle of the summer nights. I also need to take a one-day safe driving course. A whole day! Is it like, catered? Do they have pole dancers? Next thing you know they’ll require me to wear my eyeglasses when driving, just because I’m virtually blind in one eye. Hell, that takes all the fun out of driving around Montauk on Saturday night. For those who didn’t catch the story last week, Uber is banned in East Hampton. But if an Uber driver registers with the town and has a home office he’s good to go. Guess what, I have two offices in town. Do I really want to be a taxi driver? Probably not. I speak English, I don’t own a turban, I actually know my way around, and I am not the least bit surly. In other words, I could never make it in New York City. Out here in the Hamptons though, I have a real shot. After all, what other cabbies give out free condoms? Besides, I’ve been called a hack many times.

What Is The ‘Minimum’? Silly season is upon us and as politicians curry for votes they more and more say what voters want to hear-- whether it makes any sense or not. The latest is the debate over raising the minimum wage. Hillary Clinton says she may be in favor in raising the minimum wage to as much as $15 an hour -- it currently is $7.25 and scheduled to rise to $7.75 in September. Here on the East End, where cops and teachers make six figure salaries and relatively modest houses sell for $1 million, $15 an hour doesn’t seem so much. But consider the real world -- in lots of states teachers and policeman earn somewhere around $40,000 annually, and a house can be bought for $100,000. The perception is Democrats take from the rich and give to the poor and Republicans make the rich richer at the expense of the poor. The truth is, both parties advance their agenda and the middle class foots the bill. We favor a higher minimum wage but strongly suggest $15 an hour is anything but. Obviously, paying unskilled workers as much as professionals makes no sense. Business owners wouldn’t be able to turn a profit, and as more and more went out of business, unemployment rates would skyrocket and the economy would be devastated. Chain stores, fast food restaurants and many factories depend on low cost labor – it’s just the way it is. Many Republicans, on the other hand, drew the line at $7.25 an hour, which provides little incentive for those who want to work. When take home pay barely equals the amount of public assistance a would-be worker qualifies for there is no incentive to seek employment. Profits rise, but they do so at the expense of the poorer class, and the economy works best when unemployment is low and disposable income rises. The truth is, the minimum wage should probably be tied to the median income of a given geographic area. It would likely average somewhere around $8.50 to $9 an hour nationwide. Not a lot, we know. But better than what we have in place. And it would allow enterprising, hard working laborers looking for a better life to make a decent living, even if it meant working two jobs. It’s a start. What’s happening is instead of doing what’s best for the country, politicians are trying to optimize their chances of being elected. Clinton wants to strengthen her voting base -- those at the low end of the pay scale -- and Republicans want to shore up their hold on big business and the campaign funds that come with them. That’s no way to run a country.

By Ed Gifford To mention just a few in his progressive agenda: Control excessive corporate influence, took on the captains of industry and argued for greater government control over economy, steward of the nation’s conservation and declaring vast areas of national preserves not to be infringed upon by private profiteers, protect social welfare, promote and fight for woman’s suffrage, restore economic opportunities and correct the many unfairness’s in American life, pursued a strategy of anti-

trust prosecutions and regulatory control . . . and on and on a model by which all future Presidents would be judged. Is there anyone left to champion the ideas and ideals of Teddy Bull Moose? Certainly not at the present. Home, after my Korea stint I voted for Ike, a General and a man with a soul; Republican or Democrat, who cared. It was the man and his views that mattered. What do you do for exercise?

Continued from page 23.

Arely Castillo I like to walk. I start out near my house. Sometimes my seven year-old son goes riding on his bicycle and I just follow. I love it, because you see nature and smell the trees. You exercise but you feel relaxed at the same time.

Not dissimilar was more recently another General, Colin Powell blindsighted by the Iraq invasion debacle but nevertheless, sincere and humbled by his allowing himself to be so misled. Then, right here in our own area, there was Javits, Lindsay, Rockefeller, intelligent cerebral Republicans and even more recently Jon Huntsman. What is it about having depth that is such a deterrent within today’s Tea infused Republican Party? Rather we have this rollout of the present cavalcade of caricatures. Presently there appears to be about ten announced and at least three or more candidates yet to jump into the fray. Even the ever publicity addicted Trump threatens to once again join the crowd. His contention would make a laughing matter of even the most righteous contest competition. Oh Teddy, where are you now when your Party so badly needs your morality and guidance? NICHOLAS ZIZELIS

Alec Green I go longboarding. It’s fun. A longboard is bigger than a skateboard and it’s a bit longer. About four years ago a few of my friends started doing it and together we’ve just kept up. You just find a hill and head down it.

Marta Brito I like to do kickboxing. I do it about three times a week. I have a bag at home that I use for practice. I heard that it was good for burning calories. I think it must be true because I feel great afterwards.

Jen Lynch I run. That’s pretty much what I’ve done for exercise for the last 25 years or so. I do it about three or four times a week. It varies, how long I run but sometimes it’s ten miles or more. It’s a great way to get exercise.

Hamptons Close-up To the Editor, If anyone has any doubts about whether there should be limits on helicopters or jets using the East Hampton Airport, there does. I just had a black and white helicopter buzz so low and fast over my orchard in Bridgehampton that my house shook and its noise blotted out all else. Had I known it was coming I could have rolled my son’s old school-project trebuchet out of the barn and hit it with a melon. It was that low. I live five miles west of the airport, so it was not coming in low for a landing. It was simply giving its passengers a thrillingly close-up look at the Hamptons. As I understand it, helicopters are supposed to stay above 500’. This one was not much above the treetops of Marders Tree Farm, hundreds of feet below that limit. And, most of us have seen the ones that loudly buzz low over the beaches every weekend, rather than stay up high over the waters where they are supposed to be. As for jets, I have been woken up past midnight and at dawn by jets roaring very

low over my house for years. There needs to be some regulations limiting the hours they can use the airport, their flight paths, and the altitudes they are allowed to fly at. At a point five miles away from the airport they should be far higher than many actually fly. This is a quality of life issue. A few should not be allowed to keep disturbing the many. CEAL HAVEMEYER

A Hero Dear Editor, He may have portrayed a villain often onscreen, but film legend Christopher Lee was a hero to animals in real life. The star of The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars movies lent his distinctive voice to a PETA radio ad blasting heart experiments on animals. “When you donate money to the American Heart Association (AHA), you help fund cruel, pointless experiments on animals,”

he told listeners. The experiments Lee was referring to sound like they came straight out of his horror movie scripts, and include injecting glass particles into dogs’ hearts, inducing heart attacks in dogs multiple times a day every day for several weeks, and inflicting brain damage on newborn piglets by pounding on metal shafts inserted into their skulls. While some progress has been made— PETA has persuaded all hospitals and universities offering AHA training courses to use human simulators instead of live cats and ferrets—the AHA is still funding experiments on animals, despite the fact that more sophisticated and humanspecific research methods are available and have yielded lifesaving results. As Christopher Lee said, “Your contribution should help end suffering—not cause it. Please don’t support any charity that kills.” ALISA MULLINS, PETA

Amagansett’s Invasion! Independent / Patty Sales

Amagansett’s invasion! The Amagansett Life-Saving Station was the scene Saturday of a spirited re-enactment of the historic 1942 landing of Nazi saboteurs on Atlantic Avenue Beach. Local coast guardsman and hero John Cullen came across the four Germans who’d arrived via U-boat during the predawn hours of June 13, 1942. Cullen confronted the men and sounded the alert at the station. For the last four years reenactors have memorialized the moment.

The landlord days I’m not allowed to live with her, and she won’t be able to secure a space for us for about 6 months. I’m super nice, great with kids, cat-friendly, and love to cuddle. Classroom By The Bay

Classroom By the Bay: Last Friday 25 fourth graders from Tuckahoe Elementary School became marine scientists for the day when they joined Christopher Paparo, Manager of Stony Brook Southampton’s Marine Sciences Research Center, aboard the RV Peconic for an exploration of Shinnecock Bay. During their interactive expedition, the students got hands-on experience using the same equipment Stony Brook researchers use to study Long Island’s fascinating marine estuary. They tested water salinity, temperature, turbidity; they examined the bottom sediments, and they sampled some of the flora and fauna that are native to Shinnecock Bay. The RV Peconic is a U. S. Coast Guard-inspected catamaran, houseboatstyle vessel for operation in protected bays and rivers.

Back then, FAA officials said they wouldn’t take action against East Hampton for enacting noise restrictions. The Zeldin Amendment reads, “None of the funds made available by this Act may be used by the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration to institute an administrative or civil action against the sponsor of the East Hampton Airport in East Hampton, NY.” E a s t H a m p t o n To w n Supervisor Larry Cantwell said, “Local control is the heart of the issue over East Hampton Airport and helicopter noise. Will the people of East Hampton, through their elected representatives, be able to reasonably regulate our municipal airport, or will the bureaucrats in Washington and the national aviation interest groups control it?” “Congressman Zeldin supports local control,” Cantwell continued, “and I want to thank him by sending a clear message to the FAA: Stand down. Allow the Town of East Hampton and its residents to determine how best to support our airport and reasonably reduce aircraft noise.” “Now we call on our U.S. Senators Schumer and Gillibrand to follow suit and support adoption of this amendment in the U.S. Senate,” Supervisor Cantwell said. The town adopted local laws setting curfews to decrease noise at the airport. They’re on hold as a legal action brought by opponents undergoes review by the court. K.M.

Mattituck Makes History, Wins State Title By Rick Murphy

The Mattituck Tuckers have been knocking on the door for a long time. Saturday, they burst through. The locals won a State Class B semifinal game Saturday morning and then knocked off Livonia that same afternoon to take the title. Both games were played at SUNY Broome Community College in Binghamton. Coach Steve Decaro sent Marco Perivolaris to the hill with the trophy on the line. The big righthander responded, allowing only a single run in 6 1/3 innings before being lifted for Chris Dwyer, who earned the save. Perivolaris finished the season with a perfect 10-0 mark. Livonia, 25-1 going in, was as tough an opponent as the Tuckers faced all year. Perivolaris opened the third inning of the scoreless game by reaching on an error. Dwyer singled later in the inning, and then Ian Dish, who has been doing it all year, doubled over the leftfield’s head to plate two runs. I n t h e f o u r t h s t a n z a Wi l l Gildersleeve singled and Mike Onufrak walked. Joe Tardif dropped a soft fly down the right field line that fell for a hit, scoring both runners. Dwyer was ready in the pen and after Perivolaris recorded the first out, he came in to get the last two batters. Earlier in the day Tardif (9-1) took the mound against Ogdensburg Free Academy (18-5) and he had his good stuff. Meanwhile, the Tuckers found their hitting grove in the fourth inning against starter and loser Seth Pinkerton. John Dwyer doubled in the bottom of the first and scored on Tardif’s hit. The everpresent Perivolaris then doubled Tardif home and scored on a Chris Dwyer single. The four run inning increased Mattituck’s lead to 6-0. The final was a comfortable 8-0.

The locals, twice defending Long Island Champions, relied on flawless defense to keep both opponents in line – Mattituck didn’t make a single error all day. It was the first-ever state baseball championship in the school’s history, but last fall Mattituck won the Class B State Soccer title. Two of the baseball players, Tardif and Dan Fedun, played on that team as well. The North Fork was represented

by two teams at the State Final Four. Southold, the Long Island Class C Championship, ran into a buzzsaw in the person of John Rooney of Hoosic Valley, who blanked the Settlers 2-0 in the semifinal Saturday morning. The two teams battled through nine scoreless innings before Hoosic scored on a bunt in the tenth after two errors by the Settlers. Rooney then closed out

the Settlers, completing a five hit shutout during which he recorded 12 strikeouts. Alex Poliwoda was the unlucky loser, despite allowing two unearned runs and only seven hits. The game was played at Binghamton University. Rooney finished his career with a 35-0 win/lose record and will play for Hofstra next season. Hoosic then beat Geneseo 5-2 in the afternoon to take the Class C trophy.

Coast Guard Auxiliary News By Vincent Pica

Commodore, First District, Southern Region (D1SR) United States Coast Guard

Operation DryWater gets underway over the weekend of June 26 to June 28, 2015. See its website for details. This column is to get you focused on that, and all that it implies.

Are We Tough Enough? You’ve seen me say here that I just don’t think we are. Drunk driving, whether that be in a car or in a boat, is one place where I actually feel the legal penalties are too lenient. If a person, uninfluenced by booze, drove a car or a boat recklessly and hurt or even killed someone, he would get a more severe sentencing in many jurisdictions than doing the same thing while drunk, “under the influence” as the legal saying goes. I for one think it should be the opposite. If you had the forethought to take a drink or two before driving, you had better be thinking of the consequences. But that is just me. In past ages, drinking and still being able to drive, whether that be a car or boat, might have been considered a badge of honor in certain circles. Today, thank goodness, it is considered reckless

lunacy. And things are worse on the water than on the land, for a given level of alcohol.

Oh That Swaying Feeling Often times, when I come in from a boat ride with the family, some of the more lubberly members of the family say, “I can still feel the swaying!” If they happen to jump in the shower, it really gets intensified and they joke that they had to hold on to the shower wall to keep from tipping over! This is clear evidence of the dramatic impact the marine environment has the body’s sensory perception system. While boating, we are confronted with conflicting information from the eyes, feet and inner ear. The horizon is constantly moving – up, down and sideways – as the boat moves beneath our feet. Our conscious brain has no problem with intellectualizing this. But the unconscious part of our brain is getting sensory overload. This can result in reactions ranging from slight queasiness to absolutely debilitating nausea.

REAL ESTATE

The marine environment is full of “stressors” – the sun, glare, vibration – to name a few, are all pretty common out there. Stressors intensify the effects of alcohol, drugs and some medications. They can cause fatigue, reduced coordination, weak judgment and slow reaction time. And forget about the vision of the St. Bernard saving you from the cold by giving you brandy. Alcohol makes the body more susceptible to the effects of cold water, not less. Not surprisingly, all of this adds to boating accidents. U.S. Coast Guard data shows that, in boating deaths involving driving under the influence, more than half the victims capsized their boats and/or fell overboard. Over 1 in 5 boating deaths are linked back to the use of alcohol.

The Law Every state in the Union prohibits the operation of a boat while under the influence of alcohol. The US Coast Guard, as a federal entity, enforces a federal law that prohibits Boating Under the Influence (BUI). This law pertains to every vessel, foreign or domestic, operating in U.S. waters, as well as U.S. vessels on the high seas. Penalties may include fines, jail,

IN THE NEWS

and impounding of boats and, in some states, the loss of boating and/ or driving privileges. Back in 2008, Operation Dry Water was started in partnership with the US Coast Guard, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and partner agencies. It is a national weekend of BUI detection and enforcement aimed at reducing the number of alcohol-related accidents and fatalities, and fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol use on the water. Zero tolerance is of course the posture, then and now. Booze kills. Drugs or alcohol could cause you to lose your life, take another’s, lose your license, damage your boat, and cost you money. Essential Boat Operating Skills Adversely Affected by Alcohol or Drug Use: Peripheral vision, night vision, inhibitions, ability to distinguish colors, cognitive abilities, judgment, balance coordination, reaction time. BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources department, which is in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing . . . ”

Sports Sponsored by

Rich King and the East Hampton High School championship Varsity Soccer Squad are running their youth soccer camp this month, beginning Monday and running through June 25 at the EHHS turf field. It’s a great week to introduce youth players to the high school team, build skills, get exercise, meet new friends and help build the HS program from the ground up. The players from the NYS Regional Championship Bonac Varsity Men’s team will be working and training with the youth of the East End to pay it forward from all the past years successes . . . five years in a row of league, county and finally a state regional championship. The program this year will help offset the cost of new uniforms for the new generation of Bonac Varsity players. Last year, the team came home practically in tatters after the exhausting and extensive season that lasted until mid-November. Sessions for future athletes in grades K through sixth will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at a cost of $100; youngsters in grades seven, eight, and nine meet from 3:30 to 6:30 PM, with camp priced at $115 for the older children. Email bonacsoccer@gmail.com to reserve a spot. Mail payments to Rich King – Head Coach, EH Soccer 76 Newtown Lane, East Hampton, New York 11937. Make checks payable to Sag Harbor Youth Soccer.

Free Boating Course

The New York State Safe Boating Certification Course is now available online without a fee. New York State Law requires anyone born on or after May 1, 1996, to have a completed boating safety certificate before operating a motorboat, according to Senator Ken LaValle. Senator LaValle said, “I commend the State Parks Department for continuing to move forward with technology that helps our residents. The online courses are more convenient for Long Island boaters, and the new addition of a no-cost course is especially significant.” Until recently, boaters seeking the certification had only one option, which was to complete an eight-hour course in a classroom setting. Now, the NY State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has approved both classroom and internetbased courses for boating safety certification. Joining the two previously approved online vendors is The Boat US Foundation, which offers a free online boating safety course. When the course is successfully completed, boaters have the option of adding a small anchor icon to their driver’s license or non-driver ID, which would signal completion of the course. Full information can be located on the NY State Parks website at http://nysparks.com/ recreation/boating/boating-safety-class.aspx.
