Ellen’s Run: More Than Just A Footrace

By Rick Murphy

Ellen’s Run has evolved from a modest fundraiser to the largest footrace on the East End – but it is so much more. It’s a celebration of women who fight the good fight against breast cancer in an area that has one of the highest rates in the state. Ellen Hermanson was by all accounts a remarkable woman, and her courageous fight is the inspiration for thousands of women and the race that bears her name. A beautiful woman and a gifted writer, Hermanson’s personal battle began in February 1989 while she was still breastfeeding her six-month old daughter. She fought valiantly and courageously, undergoing surgery and aggressive chemotherapy. Hermanson became an active member of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, which advocates for survivors of all types of cancer. Later she served on its board and edited its quarterly newsletter, “The Networker.” Her older sister, Julie Ratner,

is the chairman and the founder of Ellen’s Run – the 17th annual edition is slated for August 19 at 9 AM sharp at the Parrish Memorial Hall at Southampton Hospital. Registrations are being taken now at www.ellensrun.org. “Last year we had over 1000 entrants. We have awarded $2.7 million in grants,” Ratner said. The goal was to “give psychological support for breast cancer survivors.” Many will participate, and first to finish will receive an award. All breast cancer survivors receive a rose upon finishing, and most will be adorned with pink ribbons during the race. Proceeds from Ellen’s Run support the new Ellen Hermanson Breast Center at Southampton Hospital. The Ellen’s Run Foundation has also funded cutting edge technology at Southampton Hospital, such as digital mammography equipment. “It’s a state of the art facility right here in our own community,” Ratner remarked. Ellen’s Run also supports Ellen’s

Well, a program that since May 2000 has provided psychosocial support for breast cancer survivors on Long Island’s East End under the leadership of a specially trained certified social worker. “The occupational social worker facilitates support groups for women in treatment or remission,” Ratner explained. “Cancer, living with a life threatening disease, causes a lot of emotional problems.” Hermanson was one of the founders of the Jewish Healing Center. She also served as the organization’s founding executive director and the first editor of its newsletter, “The Outstretched Arm.” Even after her recurrence she worked tirelessly as an advocate. In November 1994, Hermanson delivered an important speech entitled “One Patient’s Pain” at the NCCS annual conference. According to the Ellen’s Run website, “She was weak, barely able to walk, and facing hip replacement surgery that her doctors agreed to delay until after the conference.” It was at

this conference that Justice Sandra Day O’Connor spoke of her breast cancer. Hermanson lost her hard-fought battle with breast cancer on April 11, 1995, at the age of 42. “She loved the ocean, she loved the light out here,” Ratner recalled. “Even though we lived in Brooklyn we came out here all year long.” The organization also sponsors CONTINUED ON PAGE 27.

I HATE MY IPHONE Come on, admit it, you secretly hate your iPhone, too. I’ll bet that if they did an autopsy they would find that Steve Jobs died of shame because he released the iPhone to the world years before it worked right. Yes, I know there are a million apps in the iPhone. You can turn your iPhone into a flashlight to read a menu in dimly lit restaurants that should print their menus in Braille. There’s an app you can use to track your dog or your cat or a drunken 17-year-old any place in the world. And, in a pinch, if you can find the right app, you can leave your iPhone alone in your kitchen and it will cook up a delicious meal for two. There’s an app that will make your iPhone puff up and expand and soften until it turns into a bed for two.

Do You Have Chronic Pain? We know how you feel. ELIH Interventional

Pain Management Center

Sure, I know the apps are all wonderful. But have you tried to make a phone call with the damn thing? It has the range of a 10-foot piece of string with a Dixie Cup attached to each end. The sound is terrible and, for those of us over 50, the iPhone is single-handedly bringing back land phone lines, and pretty soon we will have a phone booth on every street like in the good old days. When I try to type a message on my iPhone it looks like I’m typing while wearing boxing gloves. My cute fat fingers seem to touch three letters on the tiny, super-sensitive keyboard at the same time. Then there is predictive text, which tries to guess what I am about to type and tries to correct my atrocious spelling before I even finish the word. Thus when I try to type my name, “Jerry,” the predictive text insists that my name is “Kerry.” So if you ever get a message from someone named Kerry, it’s really coming from me, Jerry. However this isn’t the worse thing about my iPhone. If you just stare at it, your iPhone will start making phone calls.

And butt calls are costing me a fortune. I have called people I haven’t seen in years with my butt. All you have to do is put your iPhone in your pocket and just the movement of your walking will set it off and it will start making phone calls known around the world as butt calls. I’ve called people living in Hong Kong at 3 AM their time. These are people who I haven’t been in contact with for 20 years. I’ve called dead people with my iPhone. This may be my problem for keeping dead people’s phone numbers on my phone list, but I have this theory that these people, whom I love, are not really dead as long as I have their phone numbers. Yet, when I try to intentionally make a simple phone call to some one alive and less than a mile away, my iPhone gurgles, hisses and the words “call failed” come up 90 percent of the time. And while I’m at it, Siri – the tiny woman who lives in the iPhone and is only there to be your slave – is a fraud. The executives from Apple and their ad agency should be punished for that false commercial where Siri answers any question Martin Scorsese asks her and does his bidding. Scorsese is in the back of a cab talking to Siri and she is doing everything but having sex with him. I’m sure the “Have sex with Siri” feature will be there when they release the new, improved iPhone in September. As for me, I have never had a moment when Siri did what I asked. I have begged, I have pleaded and I

Lost Ring Found Did you lose your wedding ring on Main Beach in East Hampton? A guest at my home found a Tiffany wedding ring in the surf at Main Beach in East Hampton last Sunday. If you lost your ring or know someone who lost their ring just write me at jerry@dfjp.com and tell me what the inscription reads and I will see that you get your ring back. J.D.F. have cursed her. I may talk with marbles in my mouth but all I ever get from Siri is, “Sorry, I do not understand you.” Siri is a woman, and I’m used to women not listening to me or understanding me when I talk. It’s a genetic thing. In the history of the Della Feminas, no woman has ever listened to a Della Femina male. My grandfather could not get my grandmother to listen to a word he said. Same thing with my father. He would say, “Connie, here’s what I want to do today,” and my mom would smile and do whatever she planned to do. In my lifetime I have had just two woman indicate that they understood what I was saying by nodding their heads when I was talking. I married both of them. Deciphering Those Digital Boxes

What are those black-and-white blurred squares that look like digital scrambled eggs on The Independent’s Dining Directory page? They’re QR codes, a new and effective way for businesses to advertise and spread information to potential customers. People can scan the code on their mobile device after acquiring a scanner app, which can be searched for under ‘QR code scanner’ in an app store. The result of a scan can be plentiful, with advertisers choosing where the code will send people who decide to scan, or what info to provide. Restaurants, for example, can send scanners directly to menus, special offers and discounts, or pictures of dishes. Promoters of charity benefits can link to a flyer or website for ticket purchasing, as well as link videos of performers so people can get a taste of what they’re getting for their tickets. In an increasingly digital age, QR are a quick and beneficial tool for businesses and consumers alike. Advertisers may also include QR codes in their display ads. -M.S. For more dining see our Dining Section inside B-Section. The Independent will provide you with a QR code.

Become a part of this exciting new summer dining directory. Advertise your QR codes to drive people to your website. Call The Independent - 631-324-2500.

Sunday, apparently, was not a good day to be in the water. At about 6 AM, Southampton Town Police responded to a Quiogue residence on Montauk Highway where they found a man dead in a backyard built in pool, the victim of an apparent drowning. Officers and members of the Westhampton Ambulance responded to the incident, where they determined the subject to be deceased. Police did not say in a statement released on Sunday, whether the man was a resident of the home and described him only as “a Hispanic male.” The man, whose name is being withheld pending family notification, was removed to the Suffolk County Medical Examiners Office for further examination. Police say the investigation is ongoing. Later in the day, at about 6:45

PM, Southampton Town Police responded to a call of an incident involving two subjects on a jet ski in Mecox Bay. According to police the jet ski overturned and both a male and female plunged into the water. A passing boater assisted the female and brought her on board his vessel, but the male jet skier who police say is only identified as a 29-year-old, could not be located. An extensive search was conducted by the Suffolk County Police Aviation, Southampton Bay Constables, multiple fire departments and ambulance corps. The search was suspended due to weather conditions Sunday night and resumed Monday morning. No results were found by press time. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Southampton Town Police at 631-702-2230. emily@indyeastend.com

Short Sales: A Win-Win Situation By Rick Murphy

The East End real estate market is no longer that unique churning machine that constantly spirals upward. There is a glut of unsold properties on the market, and hundreds of homeowners who face foreclosure. Enter the Short Sale, a once

hard-to-come by phenomena out here that is now becoming commonplace. It’s not only a way for homeowners to get out from under unmanageable debt – it’s a way for banks to unload properties they have no desire to own. “I’ve done about 350 transactions out here,” said John Brady, who is a

Short Sale specialist for Nest Seekers International. “It’s not a negative thing. We’re helping people, helping families stay together.” A Short Sale occurs when a home is sold for less than the money owed to the bank. The banks agree to a “waiver of deficiency” meaning they will settle for less and walk away.

Independent/James J. Mackin

John Brady

The seller gets out of a lot of debt and the buyer gets a bargain. But the banks get a palpable bargain as well. “Banks are not in the business of owning homes. They are in the business of selling,” Brady said. Foreclosed houses are a burden to banks. They have to insure them, maintain them, keep them secure, and pay taxes and utilities. In addition, Brady pointed out, the foreclosure process is time consuming – some can take as long as five years. It’s important to note that now is the time to sell if a Short Sale is being contemplated. That’s because the Mortgage Relief Debt Forgiveness Act expires at the end of the year. The act is basically a tax waiver and frees the seller from paying income tax on the amount forgiven by the bank. Brady was reared in Montauk and his mother was an independent real estate broker. Though many of the mom/pops have given way to huge, national real estate companies, bigger is not necessarily better. Nest Seekers does well, Brady said, “because we take a different approach.” He said he’s sold 40 homes in the last 32 weeks. Overall, the market on the East End remains glutted. “There are probably 6000 to 7000 houses for sale in the Hamptons,” Brady said. “There are maybe 10 sold in each town every month.” Brady spent $50,000 of his own money learning the ins and outs of the Short Sale market. In addition to wiping out mortgage debt with a sale, he said banks are now offering incentives to the seller -- $3000 to as much as $30,000 in cash. That allows the seller to cover moving expenses and provides capital to secure a new place to live. Houses in all price ranges are short selling, though bankruptcy protection is limited to those whose CONTINUED ON PAGE 27.

Beware Of Bill Cramming By Kitty Merrill

As if spotty summertime cell ser vice on the East End isn’t annoying enough, this week North Fork Assemblyman Dan Losquadro highlighted a new gambit some providers are using to lighten the wallets of unknowing customers. In a release distributed July 31 Losquadro warned of the “cramming” of unauthorized charges that may already be on residents’ wireless phone bills. He said, “If you receive a text with an offer that says you must reply no or stop not to be charged, they will charge you when there is no reply. “I was recently a victim of wireless

account immediately.” A purchase block is a free service provided by wireless phone companies. Once the purchase block is in place, you will be sent a PIN by your provider that will have to be entered to allow third parties to place a charge on your account. According to the assemblyman, the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Trade Commission have reviewed thousands of complaints regarding unauthorized third party charges over the last few years and have reported that mobile cramming is likely to continue to grow as mobile phones are more commonly used for payments. If you have been a victim of this practice and find unauthorized charges on your bill, contact your service provider to have these charges refunded, he encouraged. “Although this appears to be entirely a federal issue, I am examining possible solutions with the New York State Department of State Division of Consumer Protection and will work with the FCC and FTC towards making purchase blocks a mandator y default feature for all wireless plans,” Losquadro said. “While many families are currently struggling to pay their bills, the last thing they need to worry about is paying additional money for charges they did not authorize or even know they are paying for.” IndependentAd_July12_Vert.pdf 1 kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Buy This, Protect That By Kitty Merrill

Acquisitions, both potential and desired, dominated discussion during last Thursday night’s East Hampton Town Board meeting. The board held a public hearing on the proposed purchase, for $1.1 million of 1.2 acres of waterfront property located off Cranberry Hole Road in Lazy Point. The board also reviewed a resolution scheduling a public hearing on the acquisition of property across the street, almost 1.5 acres for $775,000. Money from the Community Preservation Fund would be used for both purchases. The first property adjoins hundreds of acres of protected lands, and could provide public access to the southernmost portion of Napaeague Bay. The access issue seemed to be of most concern to neighbors who addressed the board about the buy. Joan Mackall wondered if driving would be permitted on the beach while another neighbor worried that using the second parcel for parking would endanger the environmentally-sensitive dune plain. Mackall pointed out the beach at

the site is “extremely fragile.” She was additionally concerned about using CPF money for a parking lot. Supervisor Bill Wilkinson allowed that beach driving at the site may be possible, but Scott Wilson, the town’s land management and acquisition director, pointed out that the portion of the property that is beach is very narrow, “awful rocky,” and not attractive to drivers. Officials also explained that while parking may be an eventual use, there are no plans to build any kind of formal lot. Joseph and Nita Gottesman spoke of erosion problems in the area. She wanted to know if there’s a plan to alleviate the problem, while he wants to know if money to deal with it is being set aside and considered as part of the purchase. Wilkinson said that so far, there have been no plans to engineer anything on the beach. After several speakers expressed both concern and a seeming bent towards not buying the land, Councilman Peter Van Scoyoc reminded that an acquisition will mean there won’t be a house built there. If the developer follows through

with his plan, there will be houses built on land fronting on Oakview Highway in East Hampton. And that upsets members of the Freetown Neighborhood Advisory Committee. For years the committee has asked town officials to purchase the land to provided green space in one of the town’s most densely populated areas. Years ago, the owner was approached, but the asking price exceeded the town’s lawful limit. (Under CPF law, the municipality can’t pay more than 20 percent over

an appraised value for land.) Now that the town’s planning board approved an eight house subdivision on the nearly nine acre parcel, Freetown spokeswoman Nancy LaGarrenne urged the town to buy the property. “We’re at the crucial point where we might actually see bulldozers,” she said, bulldozers that will destroy their forest. Councilwoman Theresa Quigley said she sympathized with neighbors, but “Unfortunately the seller wouldn’t accept the offer.” Van Scoyoc observed that an approval for the land’s highest possible use from the planning board would affect its value. It was suggested a new appraisal might be commissioned. Wilkinson emphasized, however, that the town board wouldn’t take a proactive stance; its appointed CPF advisory board must initiate any request for a new appraisal. Thursday night’s final opinion about CPF purchases came from Carole Campolo. She expressed shock at a recent discussion of the acquisition of the Three Mile Harbor Trailer Park. The park has suffered insurmountable septic problems for years. Campolo suggested it might be a misuse of CPF money to buy the property. The CPF is a dedicated fund that derives revenue through a two percent transfer tax on most real estate transactions. The money – East Hampton’s got about $24 million available – is supposed to be used for open space and farmland purchases alone. Campolo additionally chastised board members for preparing to throw the trailer dwellers from their homes. It was pointed out after the meeting that CPF purchases may only be made from a willing seller. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Boat Party Goes On

Independent / Emily Toy

By Emily Toy

The infamous Sag Harbor boat party, formerly known as the Barcelona boat party, went on Sunday afternoon with relatively smooth sailing.

“I went down there about two or three times, and all seemed ok,” Sag Harbor Mayor Brian Gilbride said. The party ensued over 1000 feet off the shore of Haven’s Beach, with nearly 50 vessels, both big and small, participating. The area where

the party was, was neither town nor village waters. Dozens of cars took up the parking lot at Haven’s Beach, including two Sag Harbor Village Police SUVs, one being driven by Chief Tom Fabiano, as well as a

Last month, the Sag Harbor Village Board of Trustees passed legislation expanding its mass gathering law in an effort to prohibit the boat party from occurring in Sag Harbor Cove. Up until the new legislation, Sag Harbor had no permit requirement for parties on the water. Concern for the cove’s environmental sensitivity was one of the reasons cited by both Gilbride and Southampton Town Trustee Jon Semlear, for having the party elsewhere, as well as safety matters. In past years, the 20-year-old nautical shindig has taken place at Barcelona Neck in East Hampton and waters near Shelter Island.

Montauk’s Got Talent By Kitty Merrill

“The Battle of the Bands” hosted by the Southampton Youth Bureau earlier this summer underscored a fact lots of locals already know: the East End is home to an abundance of talented musicians. All some of them need is their chance to perform publicly. Tonight in Montauk, the chamber of commerce and local musician Ray Red host “Montauk’s Got Talent,” an outdoor event designed to give amateur musicians a chance to perform in front of a live audience, using a professional sound system. From 5:30 to 8 PM aspiring musicians in one, two, or three person acts, can perform two songs. Sign up by calling the chamber at 631-668-2428. Te l e v i s i o n p r o g r a m s l i k e “America’s Got Talent” and “American Idol,” plus oodles of offshoots, have given rise to an interest in cheering on non-professional performers with big dreams. But the shows aren’t the first to shine a spotlight on aspirants. “The Original Amateur

Hour,” airing during the mid 1930s through the 40s, was a popular radio and television program that sprang from an earlier effort, “Major Bowes Amateur Hour.” Those programs morphed into “Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour,” which ran as a Sunday evening staple from the 50s until 1970. It was a progenitor of more recent shows like the 80s/90s fave, “Star Search.” “Montauk’s Got Talent” isn’t a competition, though. So, no pressure. The event builds on the chamber’s successful weekly Concerts on the Green series held in July and August each summer. Upcoming acts this month include The Realm this Monday, Third Estate on August 20 and Vivian & The Merrymakers on August 27. Showtime is 6 PM, BYO lawn chairs or blankets. The Montauk Chamber also sponsors free concerts at Gosman’s Dockside Stage in the Harbor from 6 to 8 PM. On August 16 Ray Red performs, followed by the soul jazz trio Paradigm Shift on August 30. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Eat In Joy With CSH

By Kitty Merrill

Grandma Harriet’s Chicken Soup. Doris’s (Almost) Home Made Gefilte Fish, Jan’s Mom’s Meatloaf, Brooklyn Heights Brownies, Jack’s Mondel Brot and Carmen’s Cuban Black Beans. Find these and a bounty of additional recipes in The Conservative Synagogue of the Hampton’s new member cookbook, Ekhol B’Simha. The title translates to “Eat in Joy.” “In addition to the blessing that we recite after eating, there is the requirement of a blessing before we eat – which focuses our attention on the pleasure of the meal in which we are about to partake,” Rabbi Jan Uhrbach, explained, “thus the title of this book of recipes.” The book is dedicated to the late Marion Gotbetter, the daughter of CSH members. She was described by congregation president Stacy Menzer as “A master chef and talented baker and a brilliant, charming, and courageous woman.” CSH will celebrate the publication of Ekhol B’Simha this Sunday at the

home of Marcy and Emil Braun on Scuttle Hole Road in Bridgehampton with a “Munch ‘n Brunch” from 10 AM to 12:30 PM. The event features tastings of some of the book’s recipes, plus the chance to meet the cooks who submitted them. There will be a challah baking demonstration and a sing along with Cantor Marcos Askenazi and the Rabbi. Small and spiral bound, the book features a cover photo by CHS member Howie Jablow who died in 2011. Rabbi Uhrbach pens the forward, noting that within the pages of Ekhol B’Simha, “are not only recipes for delicious meals, but we hope also a taste of the joy and love that we feel for our community and our tradition.” Chapters are devoted to challah and other breads, soups and salads, vegetarian and dairy, fish, chicken and meat, desserts, and Passover favorites. Alongside the recipes, cooking and entertaining tips are included in each chapter. For

example, did you know a leaf of lettuce dropped in a pot of soup absorbs grease from the top? Just remove the leaf and serve. “Munch’n Brunch” is open to the public. Call 631-725-8188 to learn more. Proceeds from the sale of the cookbook benefit CSH’s general fund. According to its website, CSH is a “fully egalitarian, fully participatory synagogue.” It holds services in the Old Whaler’s Church in Sag Harbor. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

See Showers Saturday By Kitty Merrill

With the successful landing of the Curiosity on Mars last weekend, America’s eyes turned towards the heavens . . . okay, the television. This Saturday astronomy aficionados have reason to truly point their gaze, and telescopes, skyward and view the Perseid Meteor Shower. The Montauk Observatory will present an evening under the stars at Montauk County Park at 9 PM. Bring lawn chairs, picnics, and personal telescopes, or join the observatory’s astronomers and check out the shower through their professional telescopes, plus enjoy a tour of the night sky. According to the earthsky.org website, reports of 14 meteors per hour began coming in last Saturday. The light from a bright full moon was hindering view of the full show. By this coming weekend, the moon’s waning crescent will permit better view as the meteors begin flying closer to their peak of 50 to 60 meteors per hour. The Persied Meteor Shower is considered prolific and has been

seen dating back two thousand years. It’s primarily visible in the northern hemisphere, with the greatest rate of meteors visible during pre-dawn hours. In 2009, the peak hourly rate was measured at 173. The Montauk Observatory Inc. is a not-for-profit organization, designated as a 501(c)3, with a mission described on the organization’s website as, “to provide free year round educational programs, including astronomy lectures and professional planetarium shows. The goal is to build a wonderful observatory building on the East End of Long Island for its state-ofthe-art professional grade telescope and to provide discovery programs accessible via the Internet.” EarthSky, which also provides a meteor shower guide on its website, offers a motto that may help fence sitters decide whether to head out to Third House on Saturday: you might see a lot or you might not see many, but if you stay in the house, you won’t see any. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

During this season of presidential politics, we’d like to take a moment to acknowledge a group of largely, forgotten players, namely the Vice Presidents of the United States...at least the ones who served since 1932. Some you recognize, some you don’t. Some were highly respected and a few were even forced to end their careers under the cloud of scandal. But each of them lived, for a a time, only a heartbeat (or pen stroke) away from the awesome responsibilities of the presidency.

RICK’S SPACE My Quest For Olympic Gold (And A Grammy) Every morning I stumble out of bed, jump in the water, and do 20 laps. Do I pretend I’m in the Olympics? Of course I do. All of us played pretend as kids, and I’ve never grown up. I’ll start off counting strokes, and then I’ll accelerate, the imaginary crowd roaring as I head down the final lap, neck and neck with some Ruskie or other Communist heathen. I can almost hear the announcer — “They are separated by inches!

THE BODY

They are ahead of the world record! They’re going for the gold!” Then I’ll lunge to touch the end of the pool, grimacing, using every last ounce of strength left in me. I almost believe I’m young again until Karen’s voice pierces the early morning air and reality sets it. She says stuff like, “Rick, you left your teeth in the jar!” loud enough for the neighbors to hear. “Rick, you’re low on adult diapers!” That’s a real buzz kill.

The trick to winning an Olympic medal is the same as winning a Grammy: figure out the path of least resistance. In the case of the Grammys, simply write a new polka album. That’s right – a one and a two . . . there is a Best New Polka Album Grammy. How many new polka albums are there in a year? That’s why I’m training for the individual synchronized swimming gold – my left side will do exactly what my right side does — I’m in perfect harmony with myself. It’s as if I instinctively know what I’m going to do. And there are so few of us who specialize in this skill. Pole-vaulting is one Olympic sport I could never understand. At what point in time did someone say “Ok, take a very long pole, run as fast as you can with it, then plant it in the ground and vault yourself into the air 20 feet, and then come down on the other side of the bar.” How do you become good at it without breaking your back? At least it’s bit easier since the 1920s, when they invented air mattresses to land on. Before that fame was fleeting indeed – you’d vault the

bar, feel elated, then crash down backwards on the hard ground. This was why there were never any repeat winners in the pole-vaulting competition. Speaking of music, I still play air guitar, and I’m really good at it. My problem is I play real guitar right-handed and air guitar lefthanded, so all my good moves are with the air guitar, and I look like a spazz playing real guitar. It’s really embarrassing when I’m rocking out on air guitar and another adult walks in on me, especially if my teeth are out and I’m wearing the adult diaper. That’s Ok – I’ll have the last laugh when my air-guitar album comes out. The problem with being a synchronized swimmer, of course, is that thing on your nose. I have been watching the Olympics for the better part of a half-century and every synchronized swimmer has the same identical nose – pinched in the middle with tiny flap growing out the sides. It’s as if god is giving them gills. This is why you can easily identify future Olympians at birth. The doctor will come into the waiting room and say, “Congratulations Mr. Levine! You’re the father of a future Olympian!” Mr. Levine will say, “How can you be sure, doctor?” “Because she has flappers on her nostrils,” the doctor will answer. In other words, if you have an ugly kid, push her into synchronized swimming with all the other uglies. Might as well get a medal out of the deal, right? I know that in a few weeks I’m going to go out there one morning and it will be really cold, too cold to swim. At that point the quest for Olympic Gold will end for me, but a young man’s dreams will never die. I’ll pick myself up, dust off the hurt, and start another quest, for I know deep within me greatness lives. I’ll pick up my air guitar and start working on the best damn new polka album of the year. A one and a two . . .

Getting Ugly In Sag Harbor The Sag Harbor School District has made great strides scholastically, but unfortunately certain school board members need a lesson in democracy. It’s no secret that internal strife is wreaking havoc on the district. Walter Wilcoxen, who was elected to the school board, abruptly resigned in July. He accused unnamed school board members of “mistrust, scheming, grandstanding, blindsiding, and micromanaging.” Dr. John Gratto, the superintendent, announced his resignation around the same time, and though he was more diplomatic, it’s an open secret he was fed up with some board members as well. It is not unusual for board members to think they know more about the district’s business than professionals do. It’s an unfortunate byproduct of electing laymen to a job they often times have no aptitude or credentials for. Sometimes boards become closed shops that shun outsiders. In this case, the board apparently is manipulating who will fill Wilcoxen’s shoes; the rumor mill has it the majority wants Tom Gleeson, who was defeated in his bid to get elected in the spring. All the posturing aside, this is clearly a choice for voters. The school board should set an election date, and would-be candidates can fill and file petitions. If Gleeson prevails, so be it. We’ve been around a long time – whenever there is a school board that tries to

Ridiculous Accusations Dear Editor, I’ve been involved in politics for a long time and watched a lot of ridiculous accusations being made against one candidate or another, but Congressman Bishop’s daughter attacking Randy Altschuler as “anti-woman” last week took the cake! As you know, an independent, nonpartisan ethics group criticized Congressman Bishop recently in a scathing report for abusing his office and funneling nearly $600,000 to his daughter’s business. Instead of addressing this legitimate criticism about this unethical business arrangement, Ms. Bishop accused Randy of being “anti-woman” for raising the

Congressman’s ethics as a campaign issue. Anti-woman? Really? While Randy is certainly against Members of Congress abusing their office to enrich their own family as Congressman Bishop has done, he is hardly anti-woman. Randy was raised by a single Mom whom he adores; he is happily married to his beautiful wife and practicing pediatrician, Cheryl; and is the proud father of a precious little daughter named Sasha. That doesn’t sound like someone who is anti-woman, does it? Randy’s Campaign Manager (me), Deputy Manager and Finance Director are all women. Would someone who is “antiwoman” hire women for the top three staff positions in his campaign? The bottom line is this: A respected, non-partisan ethics group has said that it is wrong for Members of Congress to use their positions of power to enrich members of their own family. Even Democratic Con-

subvert the process by cutting the public out of the loop, it always means there is an agenda that will not serve the district or taxpayers well. This kind of arrogance is dangerous, and board members who exhibit it should be voted off the board when their terms come up for reelection. There is a petition circulating asking for an open election – Sag Harbor citizens should sign it, but it shouldn’t be necessary. Any board member not in favor of an open election shouldn’t be a board member. For The Kids There is an article on our Schools page and a letter to the editor about the situation at Springs School, where budget cutbacks necessitated cutting middle school sports. No one is blaming the school board or the administration – state mandated cutbacks meant something had to go and the board did an excellent job of paring costs and still maintaining core educational programs. A group has formed to help raise funds privately. This is a chance for everyone who really cares about the kids to help out – you don’t have to be a Springs resident, either. In times like these we have to consider the East End one entity – no child should be deprived of the right to compete. After watching the young Americans in the Olympics that fact should really hit home for all of us: one year away from a sport is an eternity for an athlete that aspires to be great. gressman Steve Israel said he would draw the line at hiring family. Instead of trying to distract voters with nonsense, let’s hope Congressman Bishop will start explaining why 30,000 jobs have left Long Island during his time in Congress and why he’s been named one of the worst ethics abusers in Washington. DIANA WEIR Campaign Manager – Altschuler for Congress

The Best To the Editor, When Congressman Bishop decided to hire a fund-raiser, he wanted to hire the best. Molly Bishop is the best. The fact that she is his daughter has no relevance on her ability to do the job. Molly Bishop is intelligent and articulate, she is dedicated to whatever cause or candidate she represents. She is profes-

sional at all times. It is insulting to suggest she has ridden on her father’s coattails to develop her own successful business, it is simply not true. During the 14 years I worked at Southampton College while Congressman Bishop was Provost I had the pleasure of working with some members of his family on staff and many who worked as volunteers. I never met people who had a greater work ethic or who worked harder, no favoritism was ever shown. I support Congressman Bishop without reservation; I also support his decision to hire the best people he knows to work with him. I respect Molly Bishop for her loyalty, dedication and ability to get the job done; her track record is proven well beyond her work for the Congressman. Max Hunting I have two horses, Max and Shahab. Shahab is an Arabian. I have nine Koi fish. And I have a cat named Lilac. She’s grey. I’d like to get a sloth. They are awesome. They’re like all slow motion and they hang upside down. But chances are pretty slim I’ll get one.

Dear Editor, Springs Middle School Athletes really need the help of the East Hampton community. Due to the difficult economy, our School Board was forced to eliminate $35,000 in funding to send about 40 kids to East Hampton Middle School to play on consolidated sports teams in CoEd Track and Field, cross country, girls and boys lacrosse, football, wrestling and tennis. This means, our students will NOT be able to play any of these sports in 7th and 8th grade this year. They will go over to East Hampton High School in a couple of years with no Middle School background in their favorite sports. This is very sad news, not only because we have 40 students who really want to play these sports, but also because we have also eliminated the opportunity for our kids to join together with their friends from East Hampton and Montauk to participate in the great game of growing up

VOICES

Dear Rick, As usual your editorials hit the bulls eye. First, on Bishop’s family on the payroll while he was provost, even as the school was going belly up. His daughter’s windfall -- he must have learned from Charlie Rangel. However, the revelations about the (Ronjo) Beach House and the illegal operations also hit the mark. I guess when our resident dictator, at a photo-op, was cutting the ribbon at the grand opening, the sun must have blinded him, so he couldn’t see a shed that mysteriously turned into a retail shop or a bar that is not supposed to do what it was doing. All without the required permits. So, Mr. “I am an Ex- VP for Disney” who is 100 percent for business expansion pulled his “Sgt. Schultz” routine . . . “I see nothing” and got involved. Just like his involvement in the failed MTK concert. I guess he didn’t see the illegal bathrooms in some of the hangers at the airport either. Clothespins are needed for the nose! Now if correct procedures that are required for such a approval were followed like everyone else has to do, without pressure and interference to side step the process, you wouldn’t be writing about it. Keep up the good work in keeping us informed. ARTHUR J. FRENCH

Ethan Tanner I’ve got a bearded dragon lizard named Yoshi. He’s about a foot long. I’ve had him for three years. He eats flies we get from the pet store. When I come to his tank he comes out from under the log when he sees me. And he likes to sit on my shoulder. Bernadette Callendrillo This is my dog Roxy. I’ve had her for a year and a half. She’s my first dog. We’ve had two other dogs but Roxy is the first dog that is mine. She’s very feisty but she’s so cute. She chases her tail and the only way to get her to stop, is to put a toy in her mouth. Catie and Libby Meister We have a tortoise named Freddy. He sleeps a lot and digs in the grass. We brought him home from school for vacation. There are a lot of pets from science class so we picked him. But in the fall we have to take him back and he’ll go to the preschool classroom. on the sports field. Sports is a great unifier and teaches kids to get along with others, accept the outcome no matter what, mix and play with kids from all backgrounds, and build character in the face of resistance and defeat. A group of students and parents have formed a Springs Booster Club to help raise money to restore funding for our kids favorite sports. We need to raise $35,000 to bring back all of the sports programming and appropriate transportation. Springs PTA is accepting donations for this cause, directed to SPRINGS SPORTS. As a 501(c)(3), all donations to Springs PTA (“SPRINGS SPORTS” in the memo) are tax-deductible. Springs PTA address is 95 School Street, East Hampton, NY 11937. Thanks to all our friends throughout the Town of East Hampton for helping all our kids play! MARY MCPARTLAND

Feeling Lucky Dear Editor, Clint Eastwood just “made my day” by endorsing Mitt Romney for president. It’s nice to see that there are still some “beautiful people” left in decadent Hollywood that have not been totally taken in by the charlatan Barack Obama and his

Godless, anti-life agenda that includes the world-wide advancement of such moral evils as abortion, homosexuality and embryonic stem cell research. Hopefully other big shot movie stars and starlets will take the hint and leave their egos at the door long enough to become a “Magnum Force” for Romney to take the White House this November. PAUL KOKOSKI

“Students?” Dear Editor, Facing weak poll numbers, Obama’s illegal immigrant amnesty is worse than a cheap political trick -- it’s a slap in the face to millions of lawful immigrants who play by the rules and wait their turn to come here legally. By now, you’ve probably heard the pro-illegal immigrant lobby praise Obama’s so-called “DREAM Act,” but here is a reality check: CLAIM: Obama’s Amnesty program only covers “students” who meet certain criteria. REALITY: “Undocumented” means no proof of student status, age, or residence. Every form turned in will be stamped “APPROVED,” and you’ll feel sorry for the Continued on page 23.

poor I.C.E. Agents with tired arms. CLAIM: Criminal Aliens will be weeded out. REALITY: There will be NO background checks; thousands of hard-core criminals including Drug Gang members will slide through. Pretending illegals are simply “students” does nothing to make our local problems better. Ask yourself - will our unemployed American teenagers find work easier when they’re forced to compete with a new wave of work-permit carrying illegals? Will illegal alien drunk drivers (now just “students”) suddenly turn in their car keys, and stop killing innocent people? Will criminal alien drug gangs (“student gangs”) like MS-13 disband? Will local slumlords bring their overcrowded illegal alien (“student”) rentals up to code? Will Criminal Alien (“student”) sexual predators turn themselves in? Will calling illegal immigrants “students” reduce overcrowding on the East End? Our problems will only get worse, and we’ve begun the countdown to chaos for Eastern Long Island! ELAINE KAHL

Camp Good Grief Coming Up The East End Hospice’s Camp Good Grief is offering a five-day camp program to assist children, ages four to 16, grieving the death of a loved one. The location will be the Peconic Dunes Camp in Southold and begins August 20 from 9 AM to 3 PM. The camp is offered free of charge. Children are often the forgotten mourners. When faced with a devastating loss in their lives, they grieve differently from adults. While some children are able to process and express their feelings, many don’t know what to do with the enormity of them, and so they repress them -sometimes for the sake of not further upsetting others who are grieving the same loss. Often the adults around them don’t recognize the depth and intensity of the feelings that their children are wrestling with, confusing their reticence for resilience. Instead of the children getting opportunities to express their emotion, they get pats on the back for being “strong.” Camp Good Grief offers grieving children a safe place to process and openly express their feelings. Organized by East End Hospice since 1997, the camp offers specialized support for children ages four to 16 years, grieving the loss of a parent or loved one who died from tragedy, illness or natural causes. The Camp Good Grief Camp experience is filled with traditional and fun camp activities, along with grief education and emotional support. Experienced grief professionals and trained bereavement volunteers employ a variety of activities such as art therapy, music, structured play and group therapy, designed to give children the special tools needed to cope with their grief. Children will find peer connections, support, and comfort from knowing that there are other children who understand what they are feeling and experiencing. Grieving children are provided with valuable emotional tools and resources, including memories and friendships that last long after camp ends. For over 20 years, East End Hospice has provided care and comfort for terminally ill patients, their families, and their loved ones where the patient resides, whether it is their own home, apartment, senior living facility or other place of residence in communities on the East End of Long Island. Last year, East End Hospice health care professionals and volunteers offered 548 East End

DAVIS CUP YOUTH TENNIS CAMP At East Hampton Indoor Tennis

Top Tennis Instruction Under the Guidance of Alfredo Baretto & Dennis Ferrando Assisted by Brian Rubenstein & Nick Annacone

Weather This July Of 2012 Different! This past month of July we have recorded somewhat different July weather here in Bridgehampton. While the first half of July was close to normal July weather, the last 10 days were different. Highest temperature for this July was 94 degrees. It occurred on three days, the second, third, and 18th. It was 90 degrees on two other days. The last two weeks of this July were on the cool side for a July summer month. Lowest temperature at night for this past month was 46 degrees on the 24th, which matched the record set in 1945. The highest temperature we have ever recorded for a July month was 102 degrees in 1991. Such are our extremes on Eastern Long Island. Rainfall has been extremely light this July on eastern Long Island. There were 8 light sprinkles this July with none over one half inch. The greatest rainfall was 0.31 of an inch on the 21st. Total rainfall for July was 1.22 inches, a great reduction from the long-term average of about 3 inches for a July month. We did not have any severe thunder and lightning storms this month.

Our wind direction this July was mainly from the southwest. It blew from that direction 14 days. This is our long-term wind direction on Eastern Long Island. An interesting quote of July’s daily record is – On the 6th it was 84 degrees during the day and at night it was 77 degrees. The wind was from the east and a special quote – it was a quiet day. Don’t get too many quiet days on Eastern Long Island. Recorded were 11 clear, 9 partly cloudy, and 11 cloudy days. Will we have a severe thunder and lightning squall in August? This month is noted for its sudden and at times severe thunder and lightning squalls with heavy rain. Boaters, try to know your weather. This is the month melons, sweet corn, and all the garden goodies ripen to their best on our glacial-made soil. Try to use your “weather eye” when going offshore for three hours or more, and good luck. Most summer squalls come from a westerly direction. Never rest under a tree during a summer squall. U. S . Play Bridge This hand was played recently at the Thursday night duplicate game held in the East Hampton Day Care Center. Five different teams played the hand but only one declarer, Larry Hillel, made his contract. The difference was in the play to the opening lead. Everyone, except Larry, won the first trick with the ace of diamonds and discarded an innocent looking three of hearts. After playing two rounds of trumps, the other declarers had to lose two heart tricks and one spade. Larry, however, hesitated before discarding from dummy on the first trick. He could see the potential three losers and could see the possibility of establishing the jack of hearts as a winner on which he could throw his losing spade. Instead of winning the first trick with the ace of diamonds, he trumped with a small club in dummy. He then played two rounds of trumps, ending in dummy. Next he led a small heart to the queen, which lost to South’s king. South continued with another diamond, not wanting to start the spades. Larry trumped again in dummy and led the six of hearts, which was won by North with the ace. North now led a spade which Larry won with the ace. Now he could return to dummy with a trump to play the established jack of hearts on which he discarded the four of spades. He lost only two hearts, making his contract and getting a high board for his efforts. This hand gives proof to the idea that declarer needs to make a plan before playing to the first trick. On this hand most players would reflexively play to the first trick and then make a plan. Any comments or questions can be sent to me at gaman13927@ aol.com. All Skate: Greenport Board Fest Rolls In

It’s on like Donkey Kong. So say the organizers of the annual Greenport Skate Park Festival, which rolls into the village this Saturday, with boarding competitions, live music, prizes and a graffiti art exhibition. (Find a profile of Nonstop To Cairo, one of the bands slated to appear, in our Arts & Entertainment section.) Open to all levels, in age groups from 12 and up, registration begins at 10:30 AM with boarding commencing at noon. Michelle Bendik and her husband Mike started the festival about four years ago with the goal of raising money to renovate the village skate

park. Built and designed in 1998, it’s at a point where, “a whole heck of a lot needs to be done,” said Michelle Bendik. Beyond raising money, the festival serves a second purpose: to raise awareness of skateboarding as a sport. “Not everyone plays baseball or football,” Bendrik observed. The couple – Mike’s been skateboarding in Greenport since he was a child – also hopes to bring the community together to get behind creating a community park on the skate park property located adjacent to the high school. Michelle said, “Along with the renovation, we’d like to see it become more of a community park, with a picnic area, playground, and maybe even

an exercise course.” An article from the magazine Tr a n s w o r l d S k a t e b o a r d i n g dated March 2000, described the Greenport Park as “a 20,000 square foot concrete and wood wonderland.” Kids who’d set up ramps behind an abandoned restaurant prompted the idea for a park five years earlier. Villagers derided the makeshift ramps as a nuisance, and supportive parents pushed for a solution that included better ramps erected at Fireman’s Track. Two years later then-Mayor David Kapell and the Greenport Recreation Committee garnered support for a larger space with more sophisticated ramps from the entire village board. Senator Ken LaValle shepherded a $50,000 grant through the state awards process, helping to kick off funding of the $200,000 project. Another $150,000 was gained through the sale of a portion of the village water district. The park was designed by

Andy Kessler, who also designed Montauk’s skatepark. The Greenport Park officially opened in October of 1998. Bendrik said the festival c o m m i t t e e i s s t i l l ac c e p t i n g donations for its raffle, and has already received donations from a variety of local businesses and sponsors. Message from Dori Scofield, director of the Brookhaven Animal Shelter: “Another day and another pit bull comes into the shelter. Meet Salem – here he is in the lobby awaiting his fate. He has no clue that he will probably spend more time here than he’s been alive. This sweet young, gentle boy was brought in from Bellport with his chain attached. He could barely walk from the heaviness of it. “If he were a young Golden Retriever, the shelter would be flooded with applications to adopt him. But he wears the skin, the fur, the face of America’s most unwanted. It doesn’t matter how sweet, playful or trusting he is, he is still stereotyped. Budget cuts implemented by Springs School District for 2012-13 eliminated these programs. A coalition has formed to help raise funds to allow the youngsters to compete. “We believe every kid should have the chance to put on that uniform they’ve dreamed of wearing, learn the sport they’re itching to play, show their best stuff and most importantly expand their horizons, and grow in character and fortitude as students, players and team contributors,” according to a press release from the Springs Sports Booster Club. Testani’s two run shot – his 10th of the year – in the eighth inning capped a perfect 4-4 day, during which he recorded four runs-batted-in. The Breakers scored early and often, taking a 5-1 lead in the third inning. Anthony Eichorn, their

starter, had his good stuff working, and earned the win. Andrew Gallagher went four scoreless innings to earn the save. Allen contributed three hits and three RBIs for the winners, who advanced to the Atlantic Coast League World Series. Joe Forney lifted a two-run homer for the losers. Southampton, which finished third in the regular season, ran its record to 25-19 for the season. A day earlier Southampton won the opening game 6-2. Robb Scott provided the fireworks in that one, lashing a three run homer and batting in five runs. Maximo

Almonte earned the win, going six strong innings. A week earlier Southampton upset the North Fork 2-1 in the semifinal series to earn a berth in the final. Patrick Peterson, on the mound for the winners, dazzled with 12 strikeouts as Southampton won the decisive game 3-2. The lefthander from Temple University carried a one-hitter into the eighth inning and finished with 12 strikeouts in leading the Breakers to a 3-2 triumph over the Ospreys, landing Southampton its first-ever berth in the division championship series.

Is Your Boat “Documented” And Should She Be? can access online (or email me below and I will send you the e.form) that can determine if the boat qualifies. She must be less than 79 feet to fit into the simplified window but I expect that this isn’t a problem for most of us. Documentation numbers need to be permanently attached to a structural portion of the hull, and the vessel’s name and home port need to be listed on the hull -- usually the transom. Recreational vessels must have the name and hailing port listed in four-inch letters. Commercial vessels must do the same, but they must also have the name on both sides of the bow. If the boat is already registered with the state, why do skippers have their vessel federally documented, or registered, with the U.S. Coast Guard? Documentation has several advantages, but its primary uses are to provide a “paper trail” that establishes ownership of a vessel, and documentation is often necessary to travel overseas. Remember that HIN# discrepancy I postulated

All of us are familiar with registering our vessels with the State Department of Motor Vehicles. Like a car, DMV wants to know her horse-power, fuel type (gas or diesel) and the Hull Identification Number, or HIN#. This is the on-the-water equivalent of a car’s VIN#. You are required to display the state registration numbers on each side of the bow, followed by the expiration sticker itself. But is your boat eligible for documenting with the USCG and, if so, should you? This is what this column is about. Why “Document” The Vessel? First, for the USCG to permit documenting the vessel, it must adhere to a certain formula for its “admeasure” – not what it weighs, but what it can carry in cargo. Its “admeasure” must be at least equal to five net tons by the USCG formula. As a rule of thumb, boats less than 25 feet in length are unlikely to measure up. But, there is a simplified formula that the USCG provides (Form CG-5937, Application for Simplified Measurement) that you

above? What if someone sold you a stolen boat? Think about it. Tons, Tonnes, And Tuns Tons come in many shapes and sizes – short tons, long tons, metric tonnes, gross tons, net tons, displacement tons, deadweight tons, register tons, U.S. and international regulatory tons – and tuns. A tun, going back in history, was a wooden cask full of wine. To be precise, it had to hold four “hogsheads” of wine – which is 252 gallons. Vessels were measured and taxed by how many tuns of wine they could transport. Guess that a tun of wine weighs? About 2200 pounds – and this is where it starts to get interesting or complicated, depending on how your brain works. The “ton” we all learned about in school is 2000 pounds. In maritime parlance, this is a “short ton,” with a “long ton” being, yup, about 2200 pounds. It is 2240 pounds to be precise or just about what a tun of wine weighs. Of course, most of the world is on the metric system so a metric ton – or a tonne - is 2205 pounds but, as best as I can determine, this is coincidentally about what a tun of wine weighs. The reason they are so close is because the metric ton, or tonne for short, is the weight of 1000 liters of fresh water – and wine is mostly fresh water! Displacement tons and deadweight tons can come

in all three flavors – short, long and metric. Suffice it to say that it is complicated. One last tidbit: Above, I referenced that tuns were used to measure and tax vessels “back in the day” of sailing ships and bootleggers. The agency that Alexander Hamilton created to police these policies on U.S. waters was the Revenue Cutter Service. This service became, over the centuries, what we now know as the United States Coast Guard. BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go direct to the D1SR Human Resources department, who are in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing . . .”

Tighter Race Can Benefit The Yankees The New York Yankees summer swoon continues with the Bombers having lost 10 of 16 entering this week. They are now only 6.5 games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East. Despite all this, the Yankees coming back to the pack in recent weeks may be exactly what this

team needs. Since MLB implemented its new format for the post-season, the Yanks don’t have the luxury of cruising in the belief they have either the division or wild card intact. Winning the division means more than it ever has. It allows a team to skip the play-in wild card

game. Assuming the division is within reach, no team, not even the Yankees, wants anything to do with a play-in game. If you watch any sports, you know a play-in game is a complete crapshoot. In recent seasons the World Series Champion has rarely been the team that was best all year. Last season, the St. Louis Cardinals had the fewest number of wins (90) of any team to make the playoffs, and went on to win the World Series. Meanwhile, the 102 win Philadelphia Phillies and the 97 win Yankees were out in the first round. In 2010, the two teams with the best records, the Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies, did not make the World Series. Winning in the playoffs is as much a function of getting hot at the right time as it is having the best roster or the best regular season. Keeping the Yankees sharp with their aging roster is important. Last season C.C. Sabathia gave up nine hits on six separate occasions in the final two months of the season and then pitched to a 6.00 ERA in the playoffs. Many blamed C.C.’s lack of conditioning. Keeping this team in a tight race should keep Sabathia more focused and in better shape. Also, Derek Jeter leads the American League in hits. Some fans may want to give his 38 year-old body a rest before the post season. I

don’t believe this would benefit the team because it would halt his season-long momentum. It’s been a renaissance season for The Captain; resting him any more than normal doesn’t guarantee he’d pick up where he left off. The Yanks also await the return of Alex Rodriguez (broken finger) and Andy Pettitte (broken leg). Bringing both back with something to play for would make the transition from September to the playoffs easier. Yankee fans are not used to worrying whether their team will make the postseason, and I’m not suggesting they should. But with the division lead down from the nine to 10 game range, to a 6.5 game lead, it keeps the players hungry and motivated. Having momentum heading into the fall is priceless. So maybe it’s best the Yankees hit the skids the past couple weeks. While it makes fans jittery to watch their team give up a nearly doubledigit lead in the standings, it leads to more meaningful games down the stretch. Giving New York something to play for in the final six weeks should prevent them from jogging to the finish line. Having momentum heading into the fall is priceless.
