Giglio Makes Move For Supervisor’s Seat In Riverhead

Tomosynthesis right here at Southampton Hospital

A groundbreaking study proves Tomosynthesis (3D imaging) coupled with digital mammography increases cancer detection rates. It actually provides greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities, and with Tomosynthesis there’s a greater likelihood of identifying additional tumors. This technology is available at The Ellen Hermanson Breast Center thanks to the generosity of The Ellen Hermanson Foundation. Get state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment. Riverhead Town Councilwoman Jodi Giglio is sitting in the catbird’s seat after besting incumbent Town Supervisor Sean Walter in a Republican primary battle. The victory means Giglio will run for the top spot on the Republican ticket against Tony Coates, the D e m o c r a t i c Pa r t y n o m i n e e . Walter has the Conservative party endorsement. He said he intends to stay in the race, setting up a threeway ballot. Should she lose, Giglio still retains her seat on the town board for another two years. The final tally, released by the Suffolk County Board of Elections on September 20, gave Giglio a 41vote victory over the incumbent. Giglio will be joined by her preferred running mate, Tim Hubbard, and James Wooten, an incumbent who sided with Walter and survived a primary battle. Giglio said she was prompted to run because of Walter’s ineffective

management of the town’s finances. “His fiscal policies do not represent the best interests of the public,” Giglio said. “Our bond rating has dropped, he isn’t closing the deficit, and he’s depleted our reserves.” Giglio said Walter consistently puts big business and money interests ahead of the citizens. “I am a people person. I care what people have to say – that’s the job.” Getting the town back on a sound fiscal track is her first priority. “The party supported me because I have the management skills. We have to run government like a business. I’ve tried to do that across the board—I don’t check to see what party a person belongs to.” Walter complained that Giglio won the primary because a Super PAC reportedly funded by the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association spent over $100,000 blasting Walter. “It’s hot button -- it’s rhetoric. They ran attack ads, but it has nothing to do with me,” Giglio maintained. Walter said the County Police want to merge with the Riverhead Town Police and that Giglio is on board with the plan. “He’s lying. I have no intention to merge,” Giglio said. As for Coates, Giglio is confident he won’t prevail in a three-way battle. “I ran against him two years ago – he got half the votes I did. He’s not a property owner in this town, and he’s joined at the hip with the supervisor.”

YOGI AND THE POPE I wish I could feel it again. I so wish I could feel it again – even for a few seconds. I want it to come back. I want to be 11 years old again, feeling the pure delicious joy that I felt when I heard Mel Allen say, “HERE’S THE PITCH AND IT’S A POP-UP. RIZZUTO GOES BACK, BACK AND HE’S GOT IT. THE YANKEES WIN!” Pure joy. Bad marks at school . . . Miss O’Conner screaming at me in front of the whole class that I was a dope who couldn’t add or spell . . .Nameless fears . . . Worrying about whatever I overheard my parents worrying about . . . It all disappeared in the glow of a Yankee victory. I didn’t know then that one can never feel that kind of joy again. It’s reserved for an 11-year-old kid whose every thought was about playing for the Yankees. It goes away before you know it and one day you’re 15 and the hormones show up and yes, for the rest of your life you want your favorite team to do well, but it just isn’t the same. Not the same and it will never again be the same. When I was 11 the devil could have owned my soul just by saying, “And in return for an eternity in hell

I will make you a Yankee ballplayer for one just minute.” “DEAL,” I would say. Forget that I was a terrible athlete. Forget the terror of trying to catch a Spaldeen and feeling it bounce off my fingers. Forget that my hands were made of concrete, and the balls bounced off them like they hit a trampoline. Forget that I was a terrible athlete in the Graveshead section of Brooklyn – a neighborhood of great athletes. Forget the feeling of shame when the two best players on my street would line up and pick two teams and in the end I would hear the thoughtless, “I took Jerry last time . . . OK, forget it. Jerry, you play right field.” Right field. The Siberia of the Brooklyn sandlots. You went out to right field and you and your teammates prayed that no one would hit you the ball. That was all OK because at night, lying in bed, I was playing for the Yankees. Every night there was a conversation in my head with Phil Rizzuto. “Nice play, kid,” Rizzuto would say. “Hey Yogi, did you see that catch?”

REAL ESTATE

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Yogi would say, “Kid, you saved the game when you landed in the stands. Hope you didn’t hurt yourself, but you took a home run away from them. Best catch I’ve ever seen.” I never made an out. I got a hit every time I came up to the plate — I hit a lot of game-winning home runs. And three Italians – Rizzuto, Berra, and DiMaggio – were my close friends. They were with me when I fell asleep. Then one day, only a few years later, Rizzuto, Berra and DiMaggio were replaced in my bed and in my imaginary dreams by a girl named Carol Sarlano, who sat next to me in the seventh grade and was just starting to fill out a training bra. Cut to 20 years later. I’m writing advertising at Ted Bates Advertising. One of my clients is a feminine product, Ozone Hair Spray. Since there weren’t any grooming products for men in those days, I decided I would try to get men to use their wife’s Ozone hair spray. If I could get that to happen there would be more usage of Ozone and, as it turned out a few years later, it would start a trend of hairsprays for men. So I needed three rough, tough men to use in three television commercials. I selected three Yankees: Yogi Berra, Joe Pepitone and Hank Bauer, a tough ex-marine. The only copy was the voice-over line as Yogi was spraying his hair with Ozone: “YOGI BERRA IS ONE OF THOSE SISSIES WHO USES HIS WIFE’S HAIR SPRAY.”

IN THE NEWS

Sissies. I flinch at the word today, but before women’s groups and gay groups come and try to burn a cross on my front lawn, this was 1965. This was the way people talked. This was part of the language. No one objected to the word “sissies.” It ran on every network without a single consumer protest. When the time came to shoot the commercial, I was a bundle of nerves. I was going to meet Yogi Berra -- my hero. He came in and was soft-spoken, shy and as sweet and nice as I always knew he would be. My childhood friend Phil Pepe, who was writing about sports for the New York Daily News, introduced us. “Yogi, this is Jerry.” “Jerry, meet Yogi.” Then Phil said, “Yogi, Jerry and I grew up together.” Yogi gave me a shy smile and said, “That’s OK. Everybody has to grow up with somebody.” That was it. My very own Yogi quote. A Yogism just for me. “Everybody has to grow up with somebody.” Yogi passed on last week. He died the same day the Pope landed in the United States. Yogi and the Pope. Both of them simple, sweet, wonderful people who stand for everything that is good and decent in this troubled world. The New York tabloids had headlines and page after page about Yogi. The first six pages of one newspaper were pictures of Yogi hitting, running, celebrating. On page seven of the same paper was a picture of the Pope. At first I was puzzled about the weight of Yogi stories and dearth of Pope stories. But this is New York. And as wonderful as the Pope is, and as wonderful as he will be, he never hit two home runs off of Brooklyn’s Don Newcombe to win the seventh game of the 1956 World Series. Our Yogi did. Ties, And Connecting, For A Cure By Kitty Merrill

Dillon Kab loves marketing. Seventeen years old and at the beginning of her senior year at Ross School, she’s looking at business schools like NYU for next year. If the senior project she’s launched continues to perform as it did upon rollout this month, business schools may come looking for her. For her senior project at Ross, Kab founded “Connecs LLC,” which creates fundraising programs for charities and nonprofits. Her first program is “Ties for a Cure.” It benefits the Max Cure Foundation, specifically supporting low income and military families with children battling cancer at the Stony Brook Pediatric Center. Her initial goal was to raise $40,000 and she’s already sent the first check for $2000. Why ties? Kab explained she got the idea from her father’s golf buddy, a local orthopedic surgeon.( Her dad’s a member of the MCF board.) Dr. John Brennan of Hampton Handmade was willing to donate

ties and Kab decided to accept the designer accessories. The ties retail for $40, with 85 percent of the gross revenue earmarked for the Max Cure Foundation to benefit families in the Road Beyond Barriers program at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. They’re silk and come in four different styles. Next up was finding a way to sell the apparel. Making her website from scratch was “so much fun,” the teen enthused. “I loved doing it all on my own.” The site -- make that two sites, one for the ties and one for the marketing company -- launched earlier this month. The Ties For a Cure site features the Max Cure lion rocking a tie. But sales over the Internet weren’t enough for the enterprising teen. Last weekend she set up shop at SeptemberFest in Southampton and the previous weekend was on hand in Sag Harbor for HarborFest. “It went really well,” she reported. “I sold over a hundred ties at SeptemberFest alone. It was great meeting people.” Some shoppers loved the ties, while others

connected with the Max Cure Foundation’s mission. Kab hopes to expand the product line across the East End and into local stores. You can find them now at Therapy Life & Style on Main Street in Southampton and 27 Hampton Salon on Hampton Road in Southampton. On the Connecs website, Kab explains, “Growing up with two parents who are entrepreneurs I find the business world fascinating, exciting, and inviting. I decided to start my first company in support of a worthy cause and I wanted to contribute and make a difference with my work. My family has been involved with charitable organizations and I felt compelled to combine my business skills with some of the charities that are close to my heart.” Ties for a Cure is Connecs’ first project, but Kab looks forward to helping more charitable organizations. Her “umbrella” company is designed to take nonprofits from concept to development to delivery. Connecs will create customized programs for the nonprofits and bring in donors

willing to contribute. A quote by iconic designer Charles Eames, seen on Kab’s website, summarizes the philosophy behind the company: “Eventually everything connects - people, ideas, objects. The quality of the connections is the key to quality per se.”

More Land, More Homes By Emily Toy

Tomorrow, several public hearings will be scheduled for the purpose of the Southampton Town Board to consider including specific properties in the town’s already robust Community Preservation Project Plan. Set for Tuesday, October 27, a public hearing concerning lands from Lingo I Associates (about 2.8 acres) located on Town Line Road in Sag Harbor will be scheduled tomorrow. For that same day later on in October, another public hearing will be scheduled to consider the acquisition of lands from the Joan T. Diedolf Charitable Foundation Inc., totaling up to about two acres located on Montauk Highway in Eastport. Millpond LLC and Petite Pond LLC (both in Water Mill) are two more properties that could be joining Southampton’s CPPP. The two properties total 8.3 acres located on Head of Pond Road in Water Mill and the public hearing regarding the acquisition is set for October 27. Affordable Housing The Town of Southampton invites residents interested in affordable housing opportunities to register for its waiting list. “This is an effort to keep our waiting list active and up to date,

• Winterization Specialists • Air Conditioning • Outdoor Showers • Pool Heaters • Bathrooms • Air Purification • Gas & Oil Furnaces

• Summer Openings • Boiler Replacement • Dehumidification • Hot Water Heaters • Additions & Alterations • Water Treatment Systems • Solar Installations

recognizing that the availability of affordable units is intermittent,” said Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst. “When these opportunities do occur, we look to the waiting list to fill these units as soon as possible – so if you are interested, be sure to register,” she said. According to a press release about

the effort, residents who register and meet program requirements may be eligible to purchase or rent affordable housing units within the Town of Southampton. All units have income restrictions, mainly for middle and moderate level earners. “This is attainable, workforce housing geared for people who work for local businesses, at the hospital or in the schools and who are struggling to find available rental housing, or homes they can afford to purchase,”

Throne-Holst continued. Those interested in being placed on the wait list for affordable/ attainable housing may visit the Town of Southampton’s website at www.southamptontownny.gov/ Southampton-Housing-Authority. San Gennaro This Weekend By Kitty Merrill

Italian delicacies, a street fair, midway rides, a parade, and fireworks. Those are just a few of the delights in store this weekend, as the hamlet of Hampton Bays celebrates its fifth annual San Gennaro Feast of the Hamptons. It all starts Saturday morning with a parade at 10:30 led by Grand Marshall Peter Cassone. Floats and marchers from the community and its neighbors will stage near the water authority building behind Good Ground Road, then wind their way through the center of town. Following the parade, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 10 PM (8 PM on Sunday), visitors can check out over 100 vendors offering delicious food and unique artisan creations. That might get you kind of tired. Relax in the huge onsite tent and enjoy a gamut of musical entertainment. Carmello, Elio Scaccio, John Ciotta, Badlands, and East Coast Band are featured performers. Rotating sets will run from noon till closing each day. Roaming minstrels and local talent are the powdered sugar on the zeppoli. A carnival featuring midway rides and games will be held on the grounds of the Hampton Bays Fire Department. Daily, one price wristbands will be available. The feast will see its share of celebrities, too. Joseph R. Gannascoli, aka Vito from “The Sopranos,” will be on hand to sign copies of his book. On Sunday from 1 to 3 PM, boxer Gerry Cooney will

make a guest appearance and offer autographed photos for sale. Saturday night caps will a fireworks display by Grucci at 8:30 PM. But the fun might go on a long time for the lucky winners of a new Fiat or a new Vespa. Fiat raffle tickets are $50 each, three for $100, and only 300 tickets will be sold. Try for the Vespa with a $20 ticket (three for $50). The drawing will be held at dusk on Sunday and the winner need not be present. Proceeds from the Feast will go to support Maureen’s Haven, the Hampton Bays High School

Scholarship Fund, and the Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Southampton Hospital. Designed to emphasize the vitality of The Hamptons and Hampton Bays after the summer

10/19 Madison Square Garden. Pope Francis will pull out all the stops at the gig the world is waiting for. Will include the debut of his brand new single “I Could Beat The Knicks With A Couple Altar Boys,” featuring a new video by Spike Lee. Also planned: a duet with the Allman Brothers, “No Motorcycle Ride For Me But Thanks For The Invitation,” and “I’m Sure As Hell Not Going To Heaven” featuring Miley Cyrus twerking. 10/24 The Blessing of the Fleet, Montauk, NY. The Pope, deeply concerned about our waters and the fishing community, shows his support with a full day planned for East Hampton. Francis and his entourage will fly in via helicopter Saturday morning at 4 AM and call UBER cars to race them out to Montauk just in time for a gala beach party replete with bonfires, dogs off leashes, broken beer bottles, urinating partiers, and blaring music. There will be Horseshoe Crabs on the barbie! Later that day Francis and his entourage will visit all of the famous hotspots including The Sloppy Tuna, The Crabby Underwear, The Surf Poopie, Russ Meyer’s, The Crow’s Tushie, and of course the Memory Hotel where Francis and the band will perform with the Rolling Stones! Guess what song they will play? The culmination will be a sunset mass at the Montauk Lighthouse, or, as the Pope calls it, The Leaning Tower Of Pizza. 10/25 The Ed Sullivan Show: The Papal Tour ends with a blast, as Francis brings the legendary TV host back from the dead for a poignant encore show. Also starring Topo Gigio, The Flying Wallendas, and a duet with Bob Dylan, “Knocking On Heaven’s Door” with all new lyrics by the legendary poet and songwriter: “Take These Rosary Beads From My Hands Because I can’t count them anymore It’s getting dark too dark to see Because I wear these stupid sunglasses at night” The tour will be streamed, available on Pay Per View, on Closed Circuit in theaters, and be released as a DVD. A fight with Floyd Mayweather is on the horizon. His Holiness, The Infallible Leader, He who is Without Sin, will leave NYC the next morning. In other words, Donald Trump will be hitting the road again. When he arrives back in Rome, The Pontiff will meet with rap Mogul Sean Puff Daddy Combs, and smoke will billow from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel once again.

By Any Other Name It is unfortunate the matter of global warming has somehow become a political issue. One one hand, those who deny its existence decry the environmental initiatives that cripple manufacturing production by limiting emissions or embrace “green” technology not on its merits but as an alternative to big oil companies and other industries that can control politicians with their deep pockets. On the other hand, environmentalists must cringe when they hear otherwise rational people refusing to acknowledge holes in the ozone layer or deny the fact that “global warming” exists as if it were an old wives’ tale. Perhaps it’s a matter of semantics. If “global warming” has political connotations “climate change” will have to do. But whatever its name, it is a matter for scientists to decide, and the verdict is in: mankind is guilty, and, it may be beyond the point of being a trend. It may be too late to stop. And that means, however many centuries it takes, it’s too late to save the planet. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently released its latest report on the matter. So far, 2015 has been the hottest ever recorded as measured by the Average Global Temperature. Six of the first eight months in 2015 broke the record for highest average temperature measured monthly. This has happened repeatedly since 2000. So far the 21st century average temperature is more than two degrees above the previous century. Scientists have been keeping records since 1880, and it is only during the present generation things have spiraled out of control. By the way, the average global temperature in August was 61.7 degrees, the highest ever recorded. With the heat comes water. Glaciers are melting, and the seas are rising. The first Northwest Passage, a sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, occurred in 1903 after explorers tried and failed to make the crossing for centuries. Even then, though, the crossings were sporadic and limited to the summer. In 2009 Artic pack ice that made year-round crossings impossible had broken to the point that several of the shipping routes are now navigable year-round. (Incidentally, Sag Harbor author Anthony Brandt wrote a fascinating book about the subject, The Man Who Ate His Boots: The Tragic History of the Search for The Northwest Passage.) It is imperative to understand the delicate balances that exist in nature are essential for the survival of not only humans, but also every living species. More to the point, as a waterfront community we will continue to bear the consequences of man’s folly. It’s not just excessive flooding – the global warming trend means more severe and extreme weather conditions and the advent of more and more so-called Super Storms. Using renewable energy sources, driving electric cars (or at the very least, cars that use less gas), taking advantage of solar products, and insulating our homes better almost sound like clichés, but those are ways all of us can help at least slow down the process if not reverse it. The debate over “global warming” is a silly one. It’s as if we are all dying from a disease and arguing about the name of it instead of banding together to fight it. There are too many people on the planet, and too many countries that in their zeal to industrialize are poisoning all of us, just as we and other industrialized super powers did before them. That’s the issue presidential candidates -- and world leaders -- should be taking about.

Play Bridge This hand was played recently at the Water Mill Bridge Club. Every South made the contract after the lead of the king of spades, followed by the two to East’s jack. East then paused and thought for a moment. East figured that West could overtrump unless South trumped high. However, South threw the 4 of clubs on that lead and made his contract. East’s plan to give his partner a chance to trump or promote a trump in his hand was a good one. However, East should have thought about the fact that the defense needed to win 4 tricks, not 3, to defeat the contract. Only one East, my partner Rebecca Cooper, saw the potential problem and lead the ace of clubs on the third trick. Now, with three tricks secured, Rebecca led the decisive ace of spades. If South trumped low or not at all, I could win the fourth and setting trick. If South trumped high, my jack of hearts would be promoted to a winner. For many players, defense is the hardest part of the game. Rebecca looks like she is going to do very well in that part of the game. On defense, she has a good instinct about the best play. Any comments or questions can be sent to gaman13927@aol.com. If you know four or five dedicated people who would like to learn to play the world’s most challenging and exciting card game, call me at 631-907-2917 or email me at the above address. If you

Break Ground For Wellness Center

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday for a new, nearly 49,000 square foot, $18 million Health and Wellness Center on Suffolk County Community College’s Eastern Campus in Riverhead. The new LEED certified building will serve as a health and wellness facility for the college and eastern Long Island and feature a rock climbing wall, swimming pool, basketball court, locker room and shower facilities, classrooms and faculty space as well as nursing facilities, and an aerobic and weight training room. “The Eastern Campus does not have any true athletic space,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “The new building will be available for community use and allow our Eastern Campus to serve as a complete academic center for eastern Long Island.”

Southampton SeptemberFest

Independent / Kitty Merrill

Glorious weather set the scene for the annual Southampton SeptemberFest over the weekend. The event featured fabulous food, games for the kids, vendors with booths to browse, plus music and dancing in Agawam Park. Shops throughout the village offered special sales and pink ribbons adorned village trees to raise awareness of the fight against breast cancer.

Healthcare Professionals Honored Healthcare Trustees of New York State (HTNYS) recognized Neboysha R. Brashich of Eastern Long Island Hospital; Frederick C. Braun, III, of Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center; and Deborah G. Mullaney of Ellis Medicine with the HTNYS’ Trustee Leadership and Advocacy Awards. These awards honor trustees who demonstrate leadership, commitment, and decision-making abilities to best position their organization in today’s evolving healthcare environment. “As New York’s hospitals and

health systems are undergoing tremendous changes, these trustees are examples of the incredible boardroom leadership needed to meet today’s monumental challenges and prepare tomorrow’s healthcare system,” said HTNYS Chair S. Jan Eberhard, M.D., who is a trustee at Arnot Health in Elmira. Elected to the Board of Trustees at Eastern Long Island Hospital in 1993, Mr. Brashich has served as treasurer, chairman of the finance committee, and chairman of the board for three terms. He has worked with the board to evaluate and measure the delivery of specific hospital services for long-term sustainability on the East End of Long Island. These efforts resulted in greater financial stability and improved economies for partnering hospitals, and the development of new specialty services in pain management, behavioral health, and geriatric medicine. For nearly 40 years, Mr. Braun has been a member of the Board of Directors of Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, ensuring the stability of the nonprofit hospital during decades of transformation in the delivery of healthcare. From complicated financial real estate negotiations to contractual obligations, his expertise has contributed to the creation of specialized care centers and affiliated programs for the delivery of a wide range of outpatient and family services. Since joining the Ellis Medicine Board of Trustees in 2006, Ms. Mullaney has been actively engaged in responding to the massive changes to Schenectady’s healthcare system, leading the board with a focus on its commitment to the community. As a long-time and highlyrespected community volunteer and advocate for children, she has leveraged her personal credibility and substantial energy to support links between the community and the hospital, strengthening both. One shining example is the pioneering “UMatter Schenectady” community needs survey of 2013, which set the groundwork for the hospital and community approach to population health. The awards were presented at HTNYS’ 35th Annual Trustee Conference on September 18.

SPORTS Island Championship, besting Island Trees 3-2. Once again it was Ewing on the hill – she fanned 13 and held Trees hitless for five innings. Brynn Maguire and Bock batted in key runs as Bonac prevailed, 5-2. East Hampton made it to the State Final Four, losing to the eventual state champion. Reale will never forget his players, and now

the school district will memorialize the team as well. Reale does not want to deflect from the induction, but his dismissal, and the way it was handled, does not sit well with him. Jim Miller, Joe Dunn, Kenny Carter, Roy Maber y, William Hartwell Jr., Megan Barnett and Jim Nicoletti will also be inducted to the Hall of Fame on Saturday morning.

Bonac Softballers Lead Hall Of Fame Inductees By Rick Murphy

Lou Reale spent the better part of this year getting dragged through the proverbial mud, so he was due for some good news. Recently he got it – the 2001 East Hampton High School girls’ softball team he coached is being inducted the school’s Hall of Fame Saturday. Reale was unceremoniously dumped as coach earlier this summer when School Superintendent Rich Burns declined to recommend him for the job. One of the winningest coaches in the state, Reale served as coach for 27 years and had been recommended by the school’s athletic director Joe Vas. The purging did not sit well with many in the community – Reale has mentored hundreds of students over the years and ran a highly successful program. At a school board meeting July 16, the public turned up to support Reale — Burns refused to expand on his reasons for snubbing Reale. It was gleaned however, that a disgruntled parent, local attorney Bill Fleming, was the architect behind Reale’s snub. The coach said Fleming’s daughter was on the team but didn’t play as a sophomore and was injured for much of last season. The 2001 team was one of his best, Reale said this week. “They were a super group of kids. Every player contributed,” he recalled. “They all had a job to do, and they did them. I’ve never had such an unselfish team.” East Hampton earned the Suffolk County Class B title with an epic 3-2 win over Babylon, a battle that

27

waged for over three hours and 12 innings. Reale’s ace, Jaclyn Ewing, went the distance despite playing with a badly pulled groin, limping to and from the mound, grimacing with every pitch. Erin Bock and Jen Rice got key hits to break a scoreless tie in the 12th and Bonac survived a last ditch Babylon rally to win, 3-2. “It was the greatest game I have ever been a part of,” Reale said. “They fought every inning. They worked for each other.” On June 5, 2001 East Hampton made history by winning the Long

Greenport Bests Bonac, One Game Out By Rick Murphy

Coming into East Hampton for Saturday’s encounter wasn’t exactly a walk in the park for Greenport/ Southold. After all, the giddy Bonackers were in the midst of a two game winning streak and coming off an emotional victory over Southampton last week 28-6 and capturing the Hamptons Cup in the process. Bonac, after a dreadful few years, actually gave up varsity ball last year, which is why this year’s renaissance was especially pleasing. Alas, it proved short lived – the visitors disposed of the home team convincingly, 22-0. The Porters did it methodically, pounding out a persistent running attack and mixing it with a potent short passing game while putting the brakes on East Hampton’ offense. Keegan Syron and Tristin Ireland proved a potent one two punch. Syron rushed for 56 yards and a score; Ireland had 70 yards receiving and also scored a TD. Quarterback Dylan Marlborough orchestrated the

proceedings with aplomb. The winners moved to 3-1, good for fourth place in Division IV. The Bonackers dropped to 2-2. GP/SH plays at Hampton Bays Friday at 7 PM. Center Moriches comes to East Hampton Saturday at 7 PM. In other Division IV action Center Moriches manhandled Southampton/Ross 38-7 and Mercy crushed Westhampton 390. Southampton-Ross is winless after four games. Mercy plays at Southampton Saturday at 7 PM. Riverhead, after opening the season with two losses, needed a win Saturday and got one, edging Hills East 12-6. Riverhead, locked in a defensive struggle, turned to halfback Marcus Reid, who responded with touchdown runs of one and 19 yards. That was enough for the Blue Waves. Westhampton couldn’t get past East Islip despite playing at home Friday night, losing 26-7. The visitors let loose a couple bombs including an 80-yarder from backup quarterback

Kyle Fleitman to James Kelly. Fleitman also scored on a 15 yard run, and Kelly caught a 52 yarder for another score. Dylan Laube scored on

a three-yard run for the losers. The Hurricanes dropped to 1-2 in Division III action. They play at Comsewogue Friday night.

FANTASY SP By Skippy Brown

THE INDEPENDENT • Traveler Watchman

RTS

Say Hello To The Bye Weeks Week Four is upon us, and thus Bye Weeks begin. For those that don’t know, a while back the NFL in its wisdom decided to give every team one week off during the regular season. This was done because these gladiators play such a ferocious sport that their bodies need to rejuvenate, right? Wrong – the NFL it its greed decided to stretch out the season for more televisions revenue, just as it went from a 12 game schedule to a 14 game schedule. Now every team plays 16 regular season games but there are 17 weeks of revenue, and the playoffs have been expanded to include more teams as well. What is means is all of your fantasy players will be getting a week off between now and through Week 11. Some owners draft accordingly: they will draft four running backs with different Bye Weeks to assure they will have two healthy ones when the Byes begin. I don’t recommend that for several reasons: players get hurt, players end up not performing well and can’t be trusted, and owners can always acquire fresh players on the Waiver Wire or through trades. A caveat – never overpay for a player via a trade because you need to fill a hole during a Bye Week. It is better to take the best available player on waivers and hope he pans out. This week, Week 4, there are only two teams on Byes — Tennessee and New England. There aren’t too many players on Tennessee to worry about but New England has

a slew beginning with, of course, Tom Brady and his favorite receiver Julian Edelman and of course, Rob Gronkowski, the best tight end in the game. There is also the kicker, Stephen Gostkowski, the NE Defense, and rookie running back Dion Lewis, who was picked up in quite a few leagues during the past two weeks. Next week there are four teams off – Carolina, Miami, Minnesota and the Jets. As previously advised, you should make a list now of all the upcoming Byes and start adjusting your roster accordingly. The Waiver Wire is the first place to look not only for Bye Week replacements but also for injury replacements. Which brings us to Big Ben. Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers’ quarterback, who has emerged as a big fantasy star over the past couple of years, went down with a thud Sunday. He’s out for about two months. If you own him panic – that’s right – panic. You are probably screwed. Let’s take a look at the Waiver Wire though – Any Dalton, the Cincinnati QB, is available in 70 percent of leagues. That’s right, the Red Rifle himself. The problem, though, is most of us know him to be a Fantasy choker who throws up a dud every time we need him most. Regardless, he’s off to a good start, the Bengals are undefeated, and the Red Rifle has yet to fire a blank – grab him.

www.indyeastend.com

The funny thing is Brady owners are going to do the same thing. If you miss out on Dalton, consider Tyrod Taylor, the Bills’ QB. He throws a nice ball, and he can run. He plays a little like Russell Wilson. Best of all, he’s available in 90 percent of leagues. Big Ben will be replaced in the Steelers lineup by none other than Michael Vick, best known for his

dog-killing ability. Don’t even think about it – someone should put him to sleep. A fellow owner said to me today “Vick can run!” This is a major problem among Fantasy players – they hold onto the past. Yes, Vick was fast once – when he came into the league 15 years ago. He’s 35 now, and he’s absorbed a tremendous pounding over the years.

Unfortunately, many local people have had to learn the hard way that not all car dealers are the same. The most common complaint we hear at Buzz Chew is that when people go to pick up their new car or truck, the price is not what they thought. It’s higher – often hundreds of dollars or more -- courtesy of all kinds of dealer and salesman tricks. Not at Buzz Chew. The bottomline price we agree on the day you select your vehicle is exactly what you pay the day you drive it off the lot. Always. Stop by and see the difference for yourself.

Conigliaro -Worsham

THE INDEPENDENT • Traveler Watchman

Nicole Worsham and James Conigliaro were married on September 18 in a beachside ceremony held at Oceanbleu at the Bath and Tennis Club in Westhampton. Their dearest friend Jennifer Kelly presided over the intimate ceremony, which included a gorgeous sunset backdrop, a string duet serenade by NY Ceremony Music and heartfelt personal vows. The groom vowed to try not to put his dog before the bride and the bride promised to love the groom so long that they might be old enough to see the Jets win a Super Bowl. The bride wore a timeless silk Moroccan sheath gown with a lace illusion neckline, low back and lace train by Martina Liana and carried a bouquet filled with white garden roses, blush ranunculus, and pops of babies breath. She was attended by four bridesmaids -- sisters Brooke Scripps and Tuesday Worsham and best friends Shaynon Shuhanovsky and Sherry Dey.
