Conservative Leaders Endorse Keith, Rankle Kabot By Rick Murphy
Southampton Conservative Party leaders this week endorsed Phil Keith for the position of Town Supervisor, setting the stage for a showdown on Tuesday with former supervisor Linda Kabot. Keith is a retired U.S. Naval commander, author and Harvard graduate, and is a member of the Southampton Town Planning Board. Tuesday’s primary will be a culmination of two months of innerparty wrangling. Town Conservative Party Chairman Jim Malone, a lameduck town board member, originally tried to nominate Howard H. Heckman III as the party’s candidate and filed a Designating Position to do so. Kabot challenged and on August 8 the Board of Elections invalidated Heckman’s petition. Suffolk County Conservative Party boss Ed Walsh had previously blocked Kabot’s attempt to get on the Conservative Party line by refusing to file what is known as
a “Wilson Pakula” authorization – because Kabot is not a registered party member, she needed the authorization to appear on ballot. But Kabot had another card to play – she filed an “Opportunity to Ballot” petition which if granted would allow her to enter a primary as a write-in candidate. Malone challenged, but lost – the BOE validated Kabot’s petition, setting up Tuesday’s showdown with Keith. “I am one step closer to earning the Conservative nomination . . . once again the electoral process has been put back into the hands of the voters where it belongs,” Kabot said. Kabot, a former town board member and supervisor, is a proven vote getter. Her contention is that Malone and Conservative Party Vice Chair Jeremy Brandt have an agenda and do not represent the rank and file of the party. “I wish I was that powerful,” Brandt said Monday. “We have a true Conservative in Phil Keith. The
Linda Kabot’s petition to become a write-in candidate in the Southampton Conservative Party primary was upheld by the Suffolk County Board of Elections.
Republican candidate raised taxes, overspent, and over borrowed” he said of Kabot’s stint as supervisor. “She’s trying to deflect attention from her record.” Kabot, however, produced a letter from Walsh written in 2009 that praised Kabot’s record. It stated she “held the line on taxes,” and “cut $4.5 million from the annual budget.” “Look at this guy’s resume,” Brandt said of Keith. “He’s got the chops. He’s a real solid choice.” In fact, the Conservative Party leadership thinks he can win the general election by siphoning votes from both parties. But Kabot said Keith isn’t even a registered Conservative – “He is a Republican, like I am.” Kabot said Keith, a Vietnam veteran, has been misled. “Phil didn’t get the party endorsement. He was endorsed by two people, Jeremy Brandt and Jim Malone. He is being used by them – he doesn’t have the full story.” She intends to meet with Keith later this week. The bad blood between Kabot and Malone goes back to 2009, when Malone was originally going
to run for town supervisor. Kabot threatened to run a primary, and rather than take her on, Malone backed off and ran for the town board instead – with Conservative Party support. Kabot was left off the ticket, and she was beaten by Anna Throne-Holst after getting a DWI two months before the election. She was acquitted of the charge and rumors persist her arrest by Westhampton Village Police was politically motivated. Kabot who garnered almost 4000 votes as a write-in candidate against the Throne-Holst two years ago, said, realistically, Keith has no chance to win. “Phil Keith is a great guy, with admirable record of service to our country and our community,” Kabot said Saturday, “However a vote for anyone other than Linda Kabot on the Conservative Primary ballot is a vote for Anna Throne-Holst. It is important for Southampton Town Conservatives to vote for the candidate who has the best chance at defeating the incumbent supervisor,” Kabot added. The chasm between Kabot and the Conservative Party actually dates back to 2007, when she challenged then-supervisor Pat “Skip” Heaney for the Republican Party nomination and won. She then won a four-candidate race for supervisor with Heaney running on the Conservative line. There will be no names on Tuesday’s ballot, including Kabot and Keith, the only declared candidates. Voters, limited to registered Conser vative Party members, must write in the name of the candidate of their choice.

Campaign Events As Election Season begins to ramp up, several candidates are hosting meet and greet opportunities for voters. This Friday at 5 PM (not last Friday, as mistakenly reported in last week’s Indy) the Republican Committee of East Hampton hosts an Irace for Town Justice beach party at the Maidstone Pavilion in Springs for supporters of Carl Irace and those who’d like to meet him. The event is free. On Saturday, East Hampton Democratic Campaign 2013 presents its major fundraising gala for town board candidates Larry Cantwell, Job Potter, and Kathee Burke-Gonzalez and the rest of the ticket. “Sunset in September” will be held at Woody House, the home of Katharine and William Rayner at the end of West End Avenue in East Hampton Village. Extensive formal gardens, rarely open to the public are set against views over both Georgica Pond and the ocean. 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Visit the East Hampton Democratic website ehdems.com for ticket information. On Monday, the FlandersRiverside-Northampton Community Association hosts Southampton Town trustee and superintendent of highway candidates at 8 PM at the Crohan Community Center on Flanders Road in Flanders. In Southampton, Brad Bender, the Democratic and Independence candidate for Southampton Town Board, invites all to an afternoon of “Wine & Roses” in his awardwinning Northampton rose garden. For $50 supporters will enjoy an open wine bar and assortment of passed appetizers on September 21 from 4 to 6 PM. East Hampton Democrats are holding a get together at Shagwong in Montauk on September 20 from 5 to 8 PM. Admission is just $5 and an Irish band will perform. K.M.

Dear East Hampton Voter There are five seats on the Town Board. Three votes are needed to pass a law. With Democrat Larry Cantwell running unopposed for Supervisor and two sitting Democrats already on the Town Board (who will remain on the Town Board for 2 more years), local Democrats are already assured of a working majority. In January, local Democrats will hold 3 of the 5 seats on the Town Board. If two additional Democrats are also elected this November, it will give the Democratic Party unchecked power over our community, including borrowing and spending. Remember the last time local Democrats had complete control was during the McGintee / Potter administration. Their unchecked power began and brought East Hampton to the brink of bankruptcy, spending money the town didn’t have, and raiding our Community Preservation fund to pay town expenses. The State of New York had to intervene to rescue the town’s finances and get the land preservation program back on track. On election day, don’t let history repeat itself. Re-elect Councilman Dominick Stanzione and Independent candidate Fred Overton. Dominick has proven himself to be a hard-working independent thinking person who is dedicated to serving East Hampton. A vote for Dominick is a vote for healthy, balanced government. Fred’s 24 years experience in town government and bi-partisan workmanship will serve us well. It’s the smart thing to do. Summer is over. I’m in a deep depression. I’m looking for an old column to run because the thought of putting two original thoughts together is making me nauseous. I could write about Obama but then all my good friends who think he is a great president will have an attack of the vapors. This weekend, whenever I saw Obama shucking and jiving about Syria, I thought of the old Laurel and Hardy movies in the 1930s where whenever they got into trouble Oliver Hardy, the fat guy who would always cause the problem, would turn to Stan Laurel – a timid soul who did nothing – and shout, “A FINE MESS YOU GOT US INTO THIS TIME, STANLEY.” In case you don’t get it, Stanley, in this case, is Congress. OK, I found an old column. While you’re reading it I’m going to sit here with my thumb in my mouth thinking that my beloved football Giants may not win six games this year. My beloved city may soon be in the hands of Bill de Blasio who, as mayor, will have many New Yorkers moving to Chicago for their safety. Just as one waits for the first robin of spring, I’m waiting for the first squeegee guy of autumn.
CONFESSIONS OF A WIMP
I’m still shaking. It all started the other day when I climbed into the shower and started to soap up my entire body. (Those of you who know me may turn their heads now and retch at the thought of my chubby soaped-up body. I understand.) Then I reached for my shampoo bottle and shampooed my beard and mustache. Those of you who have hair on your head may be amused that a man with a shaved head would shampoo his beard and mustache. I happen to find it reassuring to touch my head every morning and feel hair in my hand, albeit just a puny little beard and what many women find to be a
creepy mustache. Now with my beard and mustache filled with soap, I reached for the conditioner. That’s when I saw it. The world’s largest water bug had been attached to the back of the conditioner container, and now he was flapping his disgusting wings and coming towards me. I heard a woman screaming: “E . . .E . . .E . . .EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.” Later I realized the woman I heard screaming was me. I have no idea how, but in less than a blink of the eye I was out of the shower. Did I fly over the shower stall? I checked the glass door of the shower to make sure I hadn’t crashed through it. It was

in one piece. I must have thrown the conditioner container – it was on the other side of the bathroom. I watched the giant water bug drowning and doing what looked like a backstroke in the shower water. He was so big that I had to stop myself from letting out another scream. Big? I would swear from looking at him with his wings flapping that he had a first-class section and a coach section. Now I was completely covered with soap and I had no intention of washing myself off in the shower. Actually, I had thoughts of not showering again for at least a year or two. So I dried the soap off of my chubby body. Soap is really sticky

when it hasn’t been washed off, isn’t it? I watched the now-drowned water bug, which was way too big to go down the drain for a fitting funeral at sea. As I walked out I told my wonderful housekeeper Rene about my terrible experience. Rene, who has something nice to say of everyone, just shook her head and said, “You are such a coward.” Then she told me to take an umbrella because it was going to rain. As I walked out of my house the thought hit me that since my body was so covered with soap, if the rain hit my skin I would leave a trail of bubbles coming off of me all the way to work. She Told Two Friends, Then They Told Two Friends By Kitty Merrill
Kathee Burke-Gonzalez is asking her friends to tell their friends who’ll tell their friends, and so on. In an effort to widen her name recognition, the Democratic candidate for East Hampton Town Board has launched a “Women for Kathee” committee. The only woman running for town board out of the field of four hopefuls, Burke-Gonzalez opined women “work differently, we’re really good listeners and tend to collaborate.” Local party chair Jeanne Frankl noted Burke-Gonzalez was the one up with the idea 2:02:27 PMwho came 319102.6827 of hosting community “listen-ins.” “She epitomizes everything we feel about today’s woman,” Frankl continued. “She does it all gracefully and well. She’s very fair and she’s very smart and she’s very
collaborative.” Frankl reported Burke-Gonzalez has wanted to run for town board for years, but waited until her children were old enough. The party chair likened Women for Kathee to a circle of friends rallying around the candidate “because she’s one of us.” As her campaign progressed, Burke-Gonzalez has had the chance to rub elbows with some of the state’s heaviest female hitters. She met Senator Kristen Gilibrand at a fundraiser for her female-focused PAC “Off the Sidelines,” declaring her “so inspirational.” Burke-Gonzalez furthered her acquaintance with former East Hampton Town Supervisor and State Democratic Committee Chair Judith Hope during a recent cocktail reception for Eleanor’s Legacy, a group dedicated to fostering female
Highway Paving This Fall
Just when you thought it was safe to brave a trip from East Hampton to Southampton or vice versa . . . Assemblyman Fred Thiele this week reported that a major resurfacing of the highway from County Road 39 in Southampton to Stephen Hands Path in East Hampton is set to commence “sometime after Labor Day.” The work is the second phase of what’s become a three-phase project, thanks to the addition last week of a final portion. At a cost of $24 million, the third phase will comprise the resurfacing of Montauk Highway between Egypt Lane in East Hampton Village and Etna Avenue in Montauk. The timetable for the project is not firm, but Thiele thinks a fall, 2014, start is realistic. The first phase was completed this past spring. A 2.3-mile stretch between Stephen Hands Path and Route 114 on Montauk Highway was resurfaced at a cost of $1.53 million. This fall’s phase two will cost $12.53 million. K.M.

Celebrating And Sending Up That “Sacred Day” By Kitty Merrill
It starts with music reminiscent of a spaghetti western. In his best Johnny Cash voice, Joe Delia sings, “after one hundred days of summer had faded into the mist the ritual would always be the same a Sacred day would finally come and the villagers would raise their pitchforks and their fists and with reverence call it by its name.” Its name, and the song’s moniker, is “Tumbleweed Tuesday.” Delia, a part time Montauk resident and award winning songwriter, penned an homage to that day after Labor Day beleaguered
locals, exhausted by the crowds, the work and the stress of “the season,” long for. The song is already starting to go viral on YouTube and Facebook, Joe’s wife, partner, and back up singer PJ Delia reported. Tu m b l e w e e d Tu e s d a y w a s christened decades ago, when the day after Labor Day saw such a stark contrast to the crowds of summer, folks joked you could see tumbleweeds bouncing across Main Street in East Hampton. With more and more visitors purchasing second homes and staying out here longer, one local joked “It’s more like Tumbleweed February now.” Still, the post Labor Day days pose a measure of relief from summer’s drama. “Every summer is different,

every one has a different vibe,” Delia, who’s been a loyal Montauk visitor for over 20 years, not to mention husband of a Montauk girl, noted.

This summer’s been one for the books, he pointed out, quoting something he overheard. “Tumbleweed Tuesday” sums it up: “There’s been hipsters and posers and rainouts and bailouts and snooky’s and guido’s galore and wherever I walk it feels like old Montauk turned into the New Jersey shore!” Many listeners can relate to Delia’s “offbeat, slightly cynical and somewhat humorous” take on the summer of 2013, as Facebook comments attest. That’s no surprise, since Delia develops his ideas from life experience – “I draw from things that actually happened, then the song tends to write itself.” “I thought the whole idea of Tumbleweed Tuesday was a funny concept,” he explained. As he started writing the song last month, he realized he needed to do it quickly, before the actual day arrived. Delia worked on a portion of the song at his studio in upstate New York. Back on the island, he completed the vocals and mixing at Mick Hargreaves’ studio in Southampton. Hargreaves is a member of Delia’s band Thieves. Delia called PJ getting her Tammy Wynette voice on for the chorus, not to mention rocking a droll Lovey Howell imitation for concluding tag lines, “key” to the production of the song. “It was such a joy and a riot to do,” he enthused. “Tumbleweed Tuesday” isn’t Delia’s first homage to the Lighthouse District. His song, “Under the Montauk Moon,” is a favorite with fans who came out to enjoy Delia and Thieves’ special style that’s a mash up of surfer music, blues, and rock and roll at venues all over the hamlet this summer. And many of those fans came out to shows sans fedoras. kmerrill@indyestend.com

Sand Land Mine Under Investigation By Emily Toy
For some Southampton Town residents, living near 585 Middle Line Highway in Bridgehampton is the pits. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating a longtime Bridgehampton sand and gravel mine, aptly named “Sand Land.” The mine’s owners are accused of continuing to illegally dumping mulch in the pits of the sand mine for years now, and locals have had enough. Last week, environmentalists and those who own property near Sand Land attended a meeting at Southampton Town Hall to request the town to enforce codes with regards to the mine, which is a 50 acre site smack dab in the middle of the Southampton Town’s Special Groundwater Protection Area. Attendees included Adrienne Esposito, Citizens Campaign for the Environment executive director, Brian Sexton, Bridge Golf Club attorney, and Bob Deluca, president and CEO of Group for the East End. The former sand mine is currently operating as a solid waste facility,
yet its practices have been anything but on the up and up, opponents say. Illegal accepting, storing and burying large quantities of mulch and compost materials, which can seriously pollute groundwater supplies, have been part of Sand Land’s operation for years, they say. Excessive noise and a formidable stench also provide problems for nearby residents. In a letter to the DEC, Esposito and Sexton highlighted some of the issues pertaining to the sand mine. “They were frantically and deliberately filling this four acre pit with mulch from their enormous inventory of mulch on site . . . this pit goes some 160 feet below grade, violates Sand Land’s mining permits depth limits, is approximately four acres, and sits directly atop the most sensitive recharge zone of the aquifer protection district, classified as a Special Groundwater Protection Area.” According to Esposito and Sexton, the improper storage of mulch and compost piles are responsible for seriously and adversely co n ta m i n a ting gr o undwa ter. Further investigation revealed that
burying mulch in large quantities leads to heavy metal contamination excessively above drinking water standards and elevated levels of radionuclides. “We need to call on the town to immediately enforce their codes for no more illegal dumping,” Esposito said in an interview on Monday. “We have eyewitnesses that this is occurring,” she added. “We need to have the mulch dug up and removed and install groundwater monitoring wells south of Sand Land.” Esposito also said Southampton
Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst verbally agreed that monitoring wells are vital and necessary in following this issue closer. Esposito said the supervisor would call the DEC to try to get those installed for further study. Other than ThroneHolst’s verbal agreement, Esposito said the response of the town board at the meeting was “lackluster.” “We shouldn’t wait,” she said. “It would be helpful if the town requested it [monitoring wells from the DEC]. You have to act to protect the groundwater.” Emily@indyeastend.com

Walking To Honor Her Dad By Kitty Merrill
Tammie Lenz’s father, John, lost his six-year battle with ALS last year. Now, the Sag Harbor resident is channeling her grief and heartbreak into walking – to fight the disease and raise money in her Dad’s honor. John Lenz was a Montauk resident, and Tammie grew up there. Team Lenz – comprised of family and friends – is raising money and participating in The ALS Association’s Walk to Defeat ALS on September 22 in Eisenhower Park upisland. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages two to five years from the time of diagnosis, Lenz reports on her walk webpage. Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease, Lenz’s page informs. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. There’s no known cause of ALS,
which can strike anyone. It often strikes military veterans. Care for a person stricken with Lou Gehrig’s Disease can average $200,000 per year. The ALS Association raises money to help sustain care services and support research. It’s the only national nonprofit organization fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease on multiple fronts – leading the fight to treat and cure ALS by funding global research and nationwide advocacy while also helping patients and their families with compassionate care and support. Overall, the ALS Association, Greater New York Chapter, is looking to raise $700,000, with almost $170,000 pledged so far. Team Lenz has set a goal of raising $2500. As of Monday morning, after about a month of soliciting donations, the team listed $2115 in pledges. Asked to weigh in on the support she’s received, Lenz said, “It’s been great . . . People have been really good.” To donate to Team Lenz, visit Tammie Lenz’s Facebook page or The Independent website, where you can click a button to call up donation info. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Aircraft Noise By Kathleen Cunningham
As nearly any homeowner in East Hampton Village, Wainscott, Sag Harbor, and scores of communities in Southampton, Southold and Shelter Island will attest, aircraft noise, particularly from helicopters, jets and seaplanes, haunts summer on the East End. Aircraft noise disturbs our nature walks, spoils our picnics and barbecues, and diminishes our property values. It disrupts our sleep, affects our health, taints the air we breathe,
and summons a fight-or-flight response in our bodies. This is a peculiar state of affairs as tourists and second homeowners, the very core of our local economy, are drawn to our communities precisely because of the peace and quiet that characterizes our very carefully tended beaches, protected open spaces, farmlands, woodlands, and creatures within them. The problem of aircraft noise has taken on newer, more disturbing dimensions, which alarmingly

parallel the approach to our community as disposable by those ‘from away.’ Is it possible the benefits brought to local businesses are being overcome by the risks that being the expendable backdrop for the summer drama crafted by these folk creates for us? More and more come here not because it’s beautiful, but because it’s fashionable. Once folks came here to appreciate the natural beauty of the place, soak in the quiet, and reunite with what most of us consider our real selves. But now, thanks to what, I don’t know exactly -- carelessness, some greed, and an irresponsible desire to push the land to its limits in spite of the obvious geographical constraints of a small peninsula -- we now live in something more akin to a wacky reality TV show than the East Hampton I came to know and love.

Can we put the genie back in the bottle? Or have we slain the goose that laid the golden egg? As the resident optimist in my household, I think we can turn things around, and not by turning back the clock. And, quite simply, we must. We must better protect our ground water and implement code changes that protect our sole source aquifer and the health of our surface waters, protecting our beaches and fisheries. We must protect the character of this community as a quiet, rural enclave with strong ties to its maritime and agricultural roots, even as those trades and practitioners diminish in number before our very eyes. We must re-exert the rights of the proprietor at East Hampton airport, say no to further FAA funding, and set reasonable access limits to the airport. In 15 short months, that will legally be within the town’s reach. Our way of life is dependent upon the sustainability of our ecosystems. When our ecosystems thrive, our economy thrives. When our economy thrives, our local families and businesses thrive. Our elected officials must recognize the inter-dependency of important quality of life issues like airport noise and its influence on the environment, both natural and economic. Our lives are completely dependent upon that shared understanding. Kathleen Cunningham is an activist and the chair of the Quiet Skies Coalition, a non-profit group of citizens committed to the reduction of aircraft noise on the East End.

He then tried to shake police by driving through nearby residential neighborhoods. Police deployed stop sticks and eventually deflated a tire on the truck and it careened into two police cars. Costly Brake Light East Hampton Town Police pulled over Jacabo Deleon Ortiz on Springs Fireplace Road Thursday night for driving without a brake light – that turned out to be the least of his problems. A check of his license revealed a revocation dating back to 2005 — he had refused to take an alcohol test. Further checking revealed a suspension dating back to January for failure to pay a fine. Then a bench warrant issued by East Hampton Justice Court in 2008 flashed. That was the final straw – he was taken into custody and his vehicle was impounded.

could have used to check for first and second round controls that would have avoided this bad slam bid. When a suit has been agreed upon and a slam seems likely, North can begin the process of bidding first and second rounds controls in the three non-trump suits. After South’s strong three spade bid showing 19+ points, North bids his lowest ranking first round control by bidding 4D which shows the diamond ace but denies a club first round control. South then bids 4H showing a first round control in hearts. North then bids 4S showing no other first or second round controls. South now knows that clubs is a dangerous suit since neither he nor his partner can prevent the defense from two club tricks. The team will not bid 6 spades! RICK’S SPACE What I Learnt In High School From time to time Rick cedes this space to guest columnists. This week a young man from a local high school waxes poetic about high school and life in the Hamptons. By Petey Bennett
Man, I’m bummed its time to git back to skool, especially since the test results came back and now everyone knows we’se all dumber than rocks. Between the breathalyzer tests and gittin’ frisked and all the freakin’ backbiting, twitting and texting we hardly learnt nuthin. Nuthin new ‘bout that! We did learnt a lot about Math but not in Math class. I mean, Missus Kelley has been there for like what, 25 years and she has the same old lessons she had when she started and she hasn’t taught one kid nuthin we didn’t already know in all that time.

We did find out what she makes from the newspaper — $136,000! That’s for those of you not good wit numbers, a hunnerd and tirty thousand freakin dollars! Mrs. Kelley only works 180 days. But she gets like three weeks personal vacation and sick days and stuff like that so she probably works like, I dunno, 165 days or something. Earl says she really works about two-thirds what regular people work. She also gits a shoppin’ day for Xmas! I love that! There’s more. Mrs. Kelley comes in at eight, she’s in the teachers lounge by 9:45, she’s eating by noon and her big butt is outta here by 2:50. She teaches five 45 minute classes (and one of them is a freakin study hall!) so that’s roughly four hours per day. I was gonna complain to our school supe Dr. Boomboleeni but Jaime told me he makes like a

quarter mil even though we never see him. Mikey says Dr. Boomboleeni avoids “student contact” ‘cause we must be contagious or maybe even lepers or sumthin’ like that. Mikey says the Boomer ain’t a real doctor anyway. Just a pretend doc. There’s more. Thanks to taxpaying folks like my Dad and Mom, who everybody knows run the dry cleaners on Main Street, the skool board has arranged for The Boomer to retire when he’s still young enough to continue to shove mashed potatoes down for the next 40 years and get paid to do it. And should he or any member of his family get sick from all that food or from the arsenic in the ground or from the bird flu or from a terrorist attack, don’t worry the skool is paying for insurance for his whole family, even his obnoxious son Norman we all hate and wish would ketch a disease really soon. So how come the skool board members never ask us kids how to make the skool better? Cause they know what we would say: Here is my list of Ways To Make Our School Like a Normal Skool Where-In Kids Learn Stuff and Crap: 1. Get rid of all the old hens who git paid for teachin’ us nuthin. 2. Let us drink and smoke. 3. Make Marybeth Kearns put out fer me.
IN THE NEWS
4. Make text books with more pictures and less writing. 5. One word: Naptime! 6. Git me a new truck. 7. Make Tish Browning put out fer me. My mom says we kan’t afford to pay any more taxes and that’s why I can’t go to a four year college like the South of the Highway kids. She says I should go to Munity College and that its really good but I never heard of it. Plus Munity is a long ways away. My buds Bruce Havens and Bubba Pierce went to college last year and they say they smoke pot all day and don’t learnt much of anything and listen to music in the lounge and eat chips and stuff like that. The difference is ya get to choose yer classes so instead of taking Science and Geography and Math and stuff like that (being I don’t do so good in them) I could take other “lective” courses like Nude Girls Who Put Out 101 and History of Beer and other classes for big lugs like me who like to sleep late. It’ll be really fun and I’ll earn my degree and get a job being a teacher! Well that’s it for today’s blog you can go to my Face Book page and read all the other blogs I rite and also some neat pictures of me during my skinhead days and also read why Marybeth Kearns should put out fer me real soon!

EDITORIAL Syria – A Set Up? President Obama did the prudent thing by resisting the call of warmongers to strike Syria in retaliation for its use of chemical weapons. Though the president claimed to have the authority as Commander In Chief to do so, he has chosen to defer to Congress. It is debatable whether he does in fact have the authority to order a peacetime strike – he once said our nation would have to be in danger of an invasion for the president to take such drastic measures. But that isn’t the issue. The United States doesn’t always have to police the world. It is not our responsibility to punish rogue nations. The proper course was to go through the United Nations. That body declined to order a joint military effort in Syria. England, though the debate was spirited, opted not to engage Syria with us. So have our other allies.
Independent VOICES
Disgusting Condition Letter to the Editor, Bravo! Someone has finally looked at Fort Pond House outside the prism of politics and come to some very undeniable conclusions: “If there is blame to be placed, place it on those who voted to buy it and then looked the other way – and those who used and abused it.” You are to be congratulated on your editorial of 8/28/13, where you lay out the facts as they have existed at least since June 2010, when I gave my presentation to the town board. The current administration had no choice; the house could not continue to be used by the public once the board was informed of its disgraceful condition, a condition that clearly existed long before the start of the Wilkinson administration. Wilkinson had only been in office for less than six months when I made my trip to the house and presented my findings to the full board. An inspection by the fire marshal
was the only option the board had at that point, followed, upon his report, by closure. I was never able to convince anyone of the disgusting condition of Fort Pond House, not community organizations that were, in my view, responsible for the deteriorating structure that became Fort Pond House, and not campaigning politicians who ultimately won seats on the board. Why worry about facts when the mantra is politics before people? Thank you, Rick, for finally looking at the situation with an apolitical eye and telling it like it is – not that it will make any difference! BEVERLY BOND
The Truth Dear Editor, Good and valid editorial Rick; when will the truth ever win out? Best regards. TRACE DURYEA
Reasonable And Defensible Dear Rick, In response to your editorial on Fort Pond House, whenever the town board wants to initiate controversial actions,
It all smells like a trap, and the danger signals are there. Russia, an ally of Syria, is sending warships to the region. The Middle East is a smoldering fire waiting to ignite – Egypt is on the verge of another civil war, and Iran has been itching to engage Israel for some time now. It is as if we are getting sucked into the turmoil. Syria is half a world away. The countries surrounding it should be outraged by the use of chemical weapons. It is those countries that need to confront Syria, and if punishment needs to be meted out, it should be done by those in immediate harm’s way – Syria’s neighbors. Our job is to make it clear we stand with Israel, and that we won’t allow the unrest in the region to put our firmest ally in danger. Obama is asking Congress to decide whether we should strike Syria. He is sending a more subtle message however – this is not our fight, at least not yet.
it should, early on, bring the potential critics into the decision making process. It is especially important to hear the views of the most knowledgeable and interested citizens. Besides hearing from individual res i d e n t s, t h e va r i o u s a d v i so r y committees, such as the Nature Preserve Committee and the Citizen Advisory Committees of each hamlet, can serve as the eyes and ears of the community. If they are well organized and well run, these committees can also provide collective wisdom to the board in each committee’s area of expertise. Differing views should not be avoided. The honest appraisal of all views should be seen as a positive development that allows all sides to reach compromises or, at least, to adjust their positions to be the most reasonable and defensible before any controversial action is proposed in the more aggressive form of a town board resolution. If the above suggestion had been followed, the proposal to sell Fort Pond House (and the Montauk Town Docks) would have been halted before the flawed idea ever reached the general public. ZACHARY COHEN
No Excuse Dear Mr. Murphy, On August 11, the New York Post published an excerpt that described a political theory relevant to arguments made by The Independent against Tim Bishop for allegedly circumventing procedures to allow a campaign donor to display fireworks near an environmentally sensitive area. The theory published under the heading “Baseball and Egypt” goes like this: If a leader is allowed to ignore procedures of the law, then the leader is sovereign, not the people. Furthermore, in a Democracy, popularity is no excuse for circumventing procedures. As an example, Southampton S u p e r v i s o r A n n a T h ro n e - H o l s t circumvented procedures to close Town Hall on July 5. While popular, the decision wasn’t really fair since it awarded one day off regardless of the amount of extra overtime worked. In a similar vein, Ms. Throne-Holst’s pattern of circumventing campaign Continued on Page 20.

JUST ASKING
IN THE NEWS
By Karen Fredericks
How did you spend the rainy Labor Day Weekend? Natasha Bowman We actually left here to spend the weekend in New York City. We were glad to avoid the Hamptons Holiday weekend and all the crowds. It was lovely in the city and it was pretty quiet and uncrowded. We just enjoyed ourselves and spent time at The Four Seasons.

financing procedures was validly questioned by Linda Kabot in her letter to the editor published August 28. SUSAN CERWINSKI
An Eye Opener Dear Rick, Thank you for your long track record of informing and entertaining your readers. I have been reading your paper for many years even though I live Upisland, currently in Riverhead. I am not a Hamptonite, or a potential Hamptonite, or even a wannabe Hamptonite, I still confess to having the same infatuation with the rich and famous that most of the country is mesmerized by - the Cult of Celebrity. Be that as it may, I am now suspending this obsession and appealing to your paper to devote one upcoming issue entirely to noncelebrities, non-national politicians - who are not members of the Intelligentsia, who are not rich, nor famous, essentially - ordinary working class members of the East End community. I guess this is sort of a challenge to you. Are you brave enough to produce one edition of the Independent - off season, or shoulder season is OK - that does not include a single reference to Christie Brinkley, Alec Baldwin, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Howard Stern (or his wife who I really like!) Richard Gere, former President Clinton (or Hillary - who I also really like!) current President Obama (I am a supporter), Mayor Bloomberg, (or any other non-local elected official or politician - in office or out of office), Nile Rodgers, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Collicchio, Bobby Flay (or any celebrity chefs) Ron Perelman, any hedge fund owner, any big time banker, any CEO, any well known artist, any famous sport star, any well known restaurant proprietor, any TV or movie stars, Nathan Lane (or any Broadway personalities), Chuck Scarborough, Matt Lauer, any other well known TV newscasters or reporters, any published or famous writers, Bay Street Theatre, the Parrish Art Museum, Guild Hall, any famous models, any gallery openings, and any mention of a fundraiser associated with a celebrity? If you choose to not take up the challenge then my only other option would be to pray to God, which is a long shot since I am an atheist, that an earthquake occurs that breaks off the South Fork of the East End of Long Island right at the border of Hampton Bays (Hampton Bays has never been part of the Hamptons anyway) and

Ralph Heiman How could you not have a good time out here? It’s so beautiful. It may have been rainy and gray but we found plenty of things to do that we enjoyed. We went to dinner. I played golf. I took a swim and we enjoyed the shopping. Sarah Choi I was sorry the weather kept us away from the beach and the sun and having fun outside. But we did some fun things in the house. We cooked together and we played games. My brother and I played ball in the hallway. We still managed to have fun. Albert Ruben The weather was pretty awful but it didn’t bother me in the least. It isn’t as if I just came for the weekend and I have plenty of time to enjoy it here. But I’m sure if I were a parent with young children, stuck in a hotel room, I would have gone crazy.
Letters & Obit Policy
The Independent publishes all letters to the editor we receive provided they are not libelous and emailed to news@indyeastend.com. We strive to print all obituaries as well but in the event we can’t, they will be published online at www.indyeastend.com. Please try to keep copy under 500 words.
floats it to either the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where it truly belongs, or has it run ashore off Smith Point, thus becoming an extension of the Mastics and Shirley. This geological event would allow the former residents of the Hamptons to see what much of America is like. Hamptonites would now have to live out of the bubble they currently reside in. It would be a true eye opener for these folks. I would pay to see them shopping at Pathmark in Shirley with the great unwashed masses that live in the real world! On a positive note, Riverhead, where I live, could be the new “Hamptons” and the place to be on the new East End! I can’t wait. JERRY BILINSKI
All The Ranting Dear Editor, It was disgusting to see the full-page ad signed by Jerry Della Femina on page seven of last week’s edition. What a cheap
shot at Eliot Spitzer! As the bible says “Let he without sin cast the first stone.” After all the ranting by Wall Street types and other tycoons, I believe they are afraid he would go after their misdeeds again like he did when he was New York Attorney General. ED JABLONSKY
We Can Help Dear Rick, Kudos to East Hampton and Southampton for taking the initiative on the plastic bag problem. Yes, they stay in the environment forever. This is not a good thing! We can do this, folks. We can help. We must take the responsibility to help Mother Earth. Remember -- her love is unconditional. DIANNE BALDUCCI

Higher Fees An Open Letter To Independent Readers, Suffolk County is home to more mobile home parks that any other county in the state. Let me tell you about the one I live in: the state holds the mortgage. Even though the payments are being made, our park administrators have ignored the mortgage retirements for over two years.

The STAR program has also been mishandled for two-plus years. This in turn causes residents to pay higher lot fees than they should be paying. Some residents have had to go to Southampton Court to fight evictions. Fortunately no one has been evicted yet. Some of the cases were dismissed: the resident showed proof that payments had been made, or they produced documentation that the administrators had refused the payments – this is proof of their mismanagement. Local officials should look into this matter. NAME WITHELD BY REQUEST

Ronkonkoma Man Found Dead A 27-year-old man reported missing by his parents was found in the waters off Montauk Point Sunday afternoon. The man’s parents told police Saturday he disappeared from their Ronkonkoma home a couple days earlier. One source said the man may have been bi-polar. The subject’s vehicle was located at Montauk Point State Park and a search was mounted by East Hampton Town Police, State Park Police, a DEC Forest Ranger and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. The County K-9 unit was also deployed. At about 3:30 PM Sunday, a nude body was spotted in the waters by passengers on a private vessel, New York State Police said. The U.S. Coast Guard responded and recovered the body. As of press time the body was being held at the County Medical Examiner’s office awaiting positive ID. R.M.

Definitely NOT Algae! By Lindsey Rohrbach
Since I am a marine biologist, it’s obvious that my favorite places to explore are the bay and ocean. However, this trip to Ponquogue Bridge has a specific mission ─ collecting animals for the marine touch tank at the museum. The targets: sea stars, sea urchins, and periwinkle snails. Waders and bucket ready, I charge into the water with the target animals

in mind. Knee-deep in water and walking along the bulkhead, I begin to slow my footsteps to scan for living creatures. I accidentally step too close to a Lady Crab (Ovalipes ocellatus) hiding on the bottom and its claws quickly point skyward in its defense. I think this is a very bold action against such a massive creature as myself. I stop and it moves over a few feet, digs itself in the sand, and disappears. Continuing with my search, it
seems as if I‘m not having much luck finding any sea stars or sea urchins. The slow walk continues and I pass what appears to be an algae growing along the bulkhead just inches under the water and, not giving the thing two thoughts, walk pass. Then I pause . . . “What was that?” I retrace my steps and peer at this interesting form about as long as my hand and positioned upright in the bulkhead. It is pinkish in color with whitish splotches and its two flaps have white wrinkly ridges. “That’s not an algae.” I continue to look at this thing turning my head sideways like a confused dog. Curiosity and caution fight with one another about what my next move should be. “Do I touch it? Will it hurt me?” I’ve visited enough places in nature to know that you should always have a healthy fear about the things you find. You never really know what

something may be and what it may do to protect itself. Frank, the museum’s executive director, is searching for specimens with me, so I call him over. He’s the one with the gloves. “Touch it,” I say, “I don’t know what it is.” Frank touches it gently with the net he has in his hand, trying to get under the unknown organism attached to the wall. We obviously disturb it because it lets out a pinkish liquid that slowly washes away in the water. “Did we hurt it?” Now we have to find out what it is. Slowly and carefully we detach the animal from the wall and it floats down into the net. A massive SEA SLUG! Realizing our discovery, fear vanishes and I reach in and pick up the magnificent and slimy creature. I never knew that sea slugs around Long Island grew so large. I am mesmerized. Back at the museum, we identify the animal as a Mottled Sea Hare (Aplysia brasiliana). They can grow to be about 11 inches and can be found in several color variations. This individual is almost fully grown measuring about nine inches. Normally found from between New Jersey and south to Brazil, this is an unusual find this far north. The two flaps on the back of the sea hare are for swimming and between them is a hard vestigial shell covered with slimy skin. We put the amazing animal back exactly where we found it, knowing that if we bring it back to the museum it may not survive. The beach is a common place to explore and many things get overlooked if we aren’t looking for them. The key: don’t look for anything . . . look for everything. And never stop looking! Things we never knew existed in our area can be right around us. All you need is a healthy dose of curiosity and the patience to discover things that are meant to be hidden. Lindsey Rohrbach is a graduate of Southampton College of Long Island University with a major in Marine Biology. She has worked for the South Fork Natural History Museum for over seven years. She was first curious about marine life when she was six years old, which proves it is never too early to start loving and understanding nature. She enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for nature with the public both in and outside the museum.

Wilpon Family’s Turn To Put Money Where Mouth Is As we turn the calendar to September, the Mets find themselves in an all too familiar position: playing meaningless games in the season’s final month. For the fifth straight year, the Mets are headed to a losing season. No, this September wasn’t expected to have any playoff implications. But, it was expected to springboard the team into 2014, and finally give the fan base a reason to “believe.” Then, when news came down last week of Matt Harvey’s partial UCL tear, the wind was taken out of the Mets’ sails. Despite the punch in the gut to the organization and the fan base, general manager Sandy Alderson and the team’s owners, the Wilpon family, need to keep to their promise and finally look into spending more money this offseason. For the past eighteen months,
Mets fans have heard about the offseason of 2013-14. It was billed as the year when Johan Santana and Jason Bay’s contracts came off the books, giving ownership more flexibility to spend. The Wilpons’ comments on potentially spending more money this offseason gained steam over the past several months since it appeared the team was a year or two ahead of schedule. All of the sudden, fans eyed a few offseason moves as the difference between an improved season in 2014, and a potential playoff contender. Matt Harvey became an ace, Zack Wheeler impressed, Jon Neise came back strong from injury; and the group of Jennry Mejia, Dillon Gee, and Jeremy Hefner showed signs of becoming valuable pieces of a very strong starting rotation. Even though the offense lacks a power punch, Juan Lagares, Wilmer

Flores, and Travis D’arnaud, have given fans enough optimism to be building blocks around David Wright. The injury to Matt Harvey was a blow to the grand plan for next season. While Harvey insisted on twitter he won’t be getting Tommy John surgery and will be ready for opening day 2014, the unfortunate reality is, he’s not a doctor. We likely won’t know until the offseason whether or not Harvey will pitch in 2014. But regardless, Alderson and the Wilpons cannot use Harvey’s potential absence next season as a reason to keep pinching pennies. Mets fans have paid their dues, and more. They’ve suffered long enough through Madoff scandals and bad baseball. I had the opportunity to go to the Mets versus Phillies game last week at Citi Field. The ballpark lacked buzz. The listed attendance was 24,447, but the atmosphere and noise made it feel like 10,000. While the fan base wants to see the team spend money, the key is spending any money “wisely.” That’s something the Mets have often failed to do. This winter’s free agent crop is far from outstanding. The big names are Robinson Cano and Jacoby Ellsbury. After that, there is

a major drop off for position players. Shin-Soo Choo is a high on-base percentage player, but would he have the power for Citi Field? Curtis Granderson is a former 40-homer man, though he would be coming off an injury-riddled season. Would Mets brass, or fans, ever be open to bringing back Carlos Beltran on a short-term deal? (Better question: would Beltran ever consider coming back? Unlikely.) How much of Nelson Cruz’s power can be attributed to his reported PED use? Despite many fans’ frustrations with Sandy Alderson, I’ve always believed he’s had a well-guided plan that will pay off sooner rather than later. Alderson has done a very good job rebuilding the farm system, especially with the power arms. But, this offseason needs to be about exploring how to take the next step to becoming a winning team in 2014. No one expects World Series contention, but playing meaningful games heading into Labor Day weekend, is long overdue for a hungry fan base. Managing Your Daily Fantasy Fix
Now that our Fantasy Football drafts are just about over, it’s time to focus on the latest craze, daily Fantasy Football. Fan duel, Draft Kings, Draft Day and many other sites now offer games that begin and end the same week. Naturally, I had money involved – and quite a bit of it. In fact, a lot of good players have gotten rich playing in the daily leagues. WARNING: For every winner
there is a loser. If you don’t know what you are doing, stay out of the money leagues. There are a lot of sharks swimming in those waters, folks. I’m one of them. Winning isn’t a matter of picking the best players, because every league has some sort of salary cap that basically means being able to identify players who aren’t in the upper echelon but who are primed to have good games on that particular week.

First, the basics: identify teams that are easy to run on, and/or pass on -- that is, they have weak defenses. Keep in mind that teams that fall behind early tend to pass more as they try to catch up. Conversely, teams that have a comfortable lead tend to run a lot more, because it takes time off the clock (Note to beginners: an incomplete pass stops the game clock, while after a run the clock continues to run until the next play). Next, identify hot offenses. Teams tend to click on offense when they have a new system that confuses defenses. It usually takes a few weeks before the league adjusts. Let’s take a look at Week One and see what match-ups look interesting. Defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore opens the season in Denver, but the Ravens are a lot weaker this season. Conversely, Denver quarterback Peyton Manning is another year removed from neck surgery and had added Wes Welker to an impressive roster of receivers. Look for Denver to air it out. Sean Payton is back as head coach of the Saints, and Atlanta comes to town in what figures to be a shoot out. Both quarterbacks, Drew Brees and Matt Ryan, should be on your fantasy radar. We especially like Falcons’ receiver Julio Jones, and we think Stephen Jackson should put up good numbers. For New

Orleans, TE Jimmy Graham is a must-start, and Lance Moore might be an affordable sleeper. If your league had a “defense” play, take Tampa Bay against the injury riddled Jets, who don’t figure to put up many points. The Cowboys and The Giants square off in Dallas Sunday night, and that figures to be a shoot out. We think Demarco Murray, the Dallas RB, could go off at a good price in this one. David Wilson will carry the load for the Giants and he is also sitting on a big game. For a deep sleeper, consider Reuben Randle, the Giants third receiver. Philadelphia plays Washington Monday and we expect the Redskins’ Alfred Morris to get a lot of work – the ‘Skins will want to take the load off Robert Griffin III, coming off a knee surgery. Rookies will be undervalued the first week: Tavon Austin of the Rams has the ability to break off a big play, as does Giovanni Bernard of the Bengals. Remember, the weather affects games. If it is rainy, the quarterbacks have trouble throwing. If it is windy, it’s bad for QBs and for placekickers. If it’s freezing cold, receivers have trouble holding on to the pigskin. Obviously, you want guys who throw and score touchdowns. The best indicator is to check the under/over numbers in your local newspapers. Vegas knows what’s going on – if the bookies forecast a high scoring game, load up on the playmakers in that game. If you are new to daily Fantasy, start off in the one-dollar games. You’re not going to win one of the big prizes being flashed about, believe me. When you start winning, you can gradually move up to two and five dollar leagues. Remember: this is gambling and nothing more. If you have a problem, it can quickly become an addiction. “Skippy Brown” recently won the Draft King Spring Fling contest, besting over 1000 other professional fantasy baseball players. Improving Your Fuel Efficiency On The Water
Now, I’m the first to say, “You’ve got a $30,000 boat tied to the dock and you’re fretting about $200 in fuel? Wassup, doc!?” But, with that said, “Waste not, want not!” and this column is about that.
Some Basics Would it be any surprise to know that heavier boats need more fuel at a given speed to move through or over the water (see The Independent archives at www.indyeastend.com, “We All Get Heavier With Age – Including Our Boats” 1/16/13)? Why lug around gear that you don’t need? Go through all your lockers, lazzerettes and compartments and just get rid of the gear that is sitting around gathering mildew. We all have it – get rid of it. Store in it the garage, in a dockside locker or just the garbage heap. Do you have an on-board water tank? I had a 25-foot Chris-Craft once that had a 40-gallon water tank -- which I kept full whether I was going out for the afternoon or an over-night’er. At over eight pounds per gallon, this was like having a lineman from the NY Giants sitting on my boat -- in his uniform and gear. Some of the bigger boats have 100 -- gallon tanks for showers. That’s three linemen! Fill the water tank up where and when you are going to use it. Name That Tune Your prop is the next most important item to tune. ‘Tune up my prop?’ you say? Yes. If your prop (pitch) is too large for the boat, you are wasting energy. Wait. It came with the boat as original equipment. How can it be too large now? Simple -- as the boat gets older (i.e.,
heavier), the prop’s “pitch”, i.e., how far the boat goes with one revolution of the prop, has to come in in order for the engine to still match the pitch and distance. A ding in the prop (never hit the bottom, you say?) can take as much as 10 percent in fuel efficiency out of the power-plant. Think of it this way: you ask for 20 gallons and the fuel tender puts 18 in your tank, pours two gallons down the fuel storage sump and charges you for 20 gallons. Make sense to you, Bunky?
Bottom’s Up! A fouled bottom is like dragging the anchor as you motor. It reduces hull “lubricity” versus the water and, if the hull is fouled, the running gear is probably too. There are plenty of eco-friendly bottom paints now, so keep the bottom clean and painted. Speed Kills (Fuel Efficiency!) Let’s stop for a second and review some maritime math. For vessels under sail, the longer the “wetted surface,” the faster the boat can go. This is why, in sail boat races, boats are assigned handicaps like golfers to normalize this issue. In theory, the handicap eliminates any structural advantages that a 25-foot sailboat has over a 16-foot sail boat so it is then all about the crew. The formula for a boat’s “hull speed” (sometimes called the “displacement speed”, and soon you will understand why) is: V = 1.34 x SQRT(LWL), where SQRT means Square Root and LWL means length of the water line in feet. V (velocity) conveniently comes out in knots.

So, the theoretical hull speed of the 25-foot sailboat is 6.7 knots and the 16-foot sailboat’s hull speed is 5.4 knots. In an interesting historical side note, this little fact was what caused a number of the great sailing clipper ships to mysteriously sink. How? Well, the captain throws on more sail to make the ship go faster. As you know, a ship’s form is to some extent a big, long “V” -- the bottom of the “V” is in the water and the top, planked over, is the deck area. Well, the only way for the ship to respond to the increased power from the sails was for the “V” to dig deeper into the water so there was more wetted surface to service the power. More sail? More power. This drove the “V” deeper into the water -- until the “V,” or the ship, drove herself under the water and sank. But, wait. I have a 25-foot boat and she goes considerably faster than 6.7 knots. How? She uses horsepower to defeat the physics of the “hull speed” equation, also known as the “displacement speed” equation. As our powerboats go faster, the “V” comes up OUT of the water, and we convert from a displacement vessel to a “planing” vessel. But at 6.7 knots, I’m burning two gallons an hour. At 25 knots, I’m burning 10

times that but only going about four times as fast. It can get very complicated from here when we start talking about bow waves and stern waves interacting and the trim of the engine versus the waterline of the boat, etc. Suffice it to say this: You’ll use less fuel at 20 knots than at 25 knots and you’ll use less fuel at all speeds if you REDUCE your wetted surface -- trim the bow up a bit (experiment at a fixed prop speed to see what your speed-overthe-water does at a given prop speed) -- by using your trim tabs, and reducing the weight of the boat so the “V” doesn’t sit so deeply in the water naturally. Lastly, install a fuel meter in your boat. If all our cars and boats had them (anybody in Washington DC listening?), our national fuel consumption would improve overnight. Nothing slows a boat down from 25 knots to 15 knots faster than realizing that you’re burning 20 gallons an hour at 25 knots.
