BE THANKFUL. IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE. It could have been Rick Santorum. It could have been Ted Cruz. It could have been that goober, brain-dead former governor of Texas whose name escapes me. And to those idiots who are shouting and stamping their feet over a person in Scranton, Pennsylvania’s boring vote counting just as much as their hippy-dippy New York City vote, I say: Get over it. You never complained about the electoral system when it elected a slug like Jimmy Carter, did you? Plus, your complaints don’t mean anything.

Steve Bannon? First of all, he needs a haircut and a comb. Is he the racist and anti-Semite you think he is? Doesn’t matter. We are now living in an occupied country. Democrats and Republicans like me who voted for Hillary now know how the Japanese felt in 1945. You don’t want General Douglas MacArthur running your country? Too bad, you lost the war. As it turns out, whichever bozo showed up would have beaten Hillary. And that’s too bad. Hillary would have been a fine president.

She’s just a lousy candidate. She’s lucky Trump just wants to jail her. Rick Santorum would have declared her a witch and had her burned at the stake. At least for the next four years you’ll know where your kids are. They will be on Fifth Avenue and 56th Street screaming, protesting and destroying all the business and restaurants near the Trump Tower. Do you know what else is just 200 feet from Fifth Avenue and 56th Street, and will continue to be successful despite the protesting idiots? The incredible Apple Store. And this has given me an idea as to who our next president should be. Steve Jobs. I know he’s dead, but dead Steve Jobs still ranks way ahead in brainpower than any candidate in either party. Steve Jobs was a genius. Years after Steve Jobs died his Apple Store is still the greatest retail store in the history of retail stores. I will never forget the first time I walked into the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue. It was packed with people from all over the world. I walked in and worked my way through the crowd, which was speaking Chinese, Greek, Swahili, when suddenly a clean-cut young man walked up to me and said, “Can I help you?” Being a typical New Yorker I took one step back and quickly put my hand over the wallet in my back pocket. “Oh,” I thought, “I know how this works. He’s part of a three-man pickpocket team. He disarms me by saying something you never hear in a retail store, a sincere-sounding ‘Can I help you?’ He pretends he wants to help me while his partner bumps against me and lifts my wallet and quickly hands it off to

another accomplice and in a few seconds my wallet is out the door.” “H-h-h-h-help me?” I managed to stammer. “Sure,” he said. Totally disarmed, I handed him an iPad with a shattered screen and proceeded to speak the guilty gibberish everyone speaks when they try to return an item. “I have had it maybe a year or two . . . don’t know what’s wrong . . . never dropped it (a lie) . . . it never got wet (a bigger lie) . . . ” The young man nodded sympathetically as though he had never heard this rap before. Then he said, “May I have your American Express card and driver’s license, please.” “It’s the old credit card bunko trick,” I thought. “He will pretend to go away, then he’ll race out the door and buy himself a new Aston Martin on my credit card before I can call an American Express representative based somewhere in India and have my credit card canceled.” In a minute the young man was back. “You’re still on warranty. Enjoy your iPad.” Then he handed me a new iPad, smiled and went on to help the next confused stranger. Which brought me to a new paranoid theory: Maybe it’s a Scientology trick. Maybe they’re sucking me into that religion and the next thing you know I will find myself praying with Tom Cruise and John Travolta. Paranoia aside, I’ve been back 100 times and I’m always greeted near the door by some clean-cut young person anxious to help. Steve Jobs built a great company. The stores are clean, beautifully designed and filled with eager, intelligent, hard-working young people. The products are great. Years after Steve Jobs kicked the bucket, his stores are run far better and are more profitable than the United States government. Let’s elect him. Dig up his body and stretch it out in the White House. Whenever there’s a problem, have the smartest people in the country get together and ask: What Would Steve Do? If Donald Trump manages to step on his you-know-what and gets impeached in the next two years, cast a write-in vote for Steve Jobs for president. Our slogan: “A dead Steve Jobs will make a far better president than a live Donald Trump.” But in the meantime, Democrats and Republicans, it’s Thanksgiving. Rejoice. Together, we’ve managed to elect the biggest turkey of them all. If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@ dfjp.com

Her Dream Comes True By Kitty Merrill

It started out as a surprise. Christine Arkinson contacted The Independent with a request: “This is a long shot - but hoping you’ll consider. My father passed away several years ago at which time I moved my mother into my home. She loves to sketch and make her own holiday cards. Simply for the family to enjoy. My mother always looks at the local papers and comments,’My artwork should be on a cover of a paper.’ She’s turning 75 and I was hoping to make her dream come true.” Arkinson wanted to surprise her mom, but after hearing Cynthia Hamiwka’s story, we had to meet her. “Call me Cindy,” Hamiwka said Thursday afternoon. A native of the Bronx, she moved from upstate New York to Springs to live with Arkinson about two years ago. She hangs out at the East Hampton Senior Center almost daily, noting, “You meet a lot of nice people there and you could never be bored.” Arranging the interview had to wait until the afternoon BINGO game concluded. Creativity, frugality, and a grandmother’s love prompted Hamiwka to start making special cards to celebrate holidays and birthdays. “I saw the price of those Hallmark cards and decided I could make cards for all the holidays and give my grandchildren the extra money.” The artist sketched holiday scenes in pencil, leaving them uncolored, so the children could color them in. “ I a l w a y s l o v e d t o d r a w,” Hamiwka explained. Her childhood passion took a backseat for a time, as life and raising children intervened. After her husband of nearly 30 years died, she didn’t wallow in grief. She put the drawing on the backburner again, she said, “because I got so busy.” A collector, she began putting together displays of antiques and collectibles and opened a kiosk at the flea market in Paterson. “I used to do it every Sunday, it was just two miles from my house.” One day, she recalled, she was “so happy” when a professional artist bought one of her Christmas cards to frame and give as a gift. When her stepfather died, Arkinson worried about her mother living alone, and built a house designed to accommodate her. Uprooted and moving to a new home, the 74-year-old doesn’t languish. “You can’t be bored,” CONTINUED ON PAGE 49.

#GivingTuesday: The Worldwide Movement For Giving Back

By Nicole Teitler

Remember when Thanksgiving holiday weekend was about actually giving thanks? Neither do I. Today, eager American shoppers seem to be rushing through their family dinners in order to get to the nearest store for the best discounts. The joy and selflessness of the holiday season seems to be forgotten, or trampled over. In 2015, Black Friday collected over $67 billion in in-store spending as over 130 million consumers prepared their wallets. Cyber Monday, the online day of the discount, in 2015 had consumers spending almost $3 billion. Americans are so quick to save a buck that the true meaning of the season is fading away. Or is it? N o w, i n i t s f i f t h y e a r ,

following a weekend of buying is a day designated to giving, #GivingTuesday, which falls this year on November 29. The day was started in 2012 by the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at New York City’s 92nd Street Y, a nonprofit cultural and community center, with the partnership of the United Nations Foundation. Together, these groups allotted a day to kick off the charitable season of giving. Maybe Giving Tuesday isn’t as exciting as battling your way to the register to purchase that brand new drone you had your eye on this season, that you woke up at 3 AM to wait in line for, but it is likely to feel far more rewarding. Through evolving social

media outlets, the day has turned into a global initiative. Other than the United States, 71 countries are beginning their own movements. Canada, Mexico,

Dominican Republic, Germany, United Kingdom, Croatia, Spain, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Israel, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Tanzania, Kenya, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia are some to mention, and the list gets bigger each year. Even if just for one day the world is coming together in a single thought, kindness can be contagious and that’s something worth spreading. As resources continue to grow, the day is becoming a philanthropic movement breaking down what makes us different by uniting us in a celebration of giving back to our local communities. Over 30,000 organizations are engaged worldwide -- nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses, corporations and individuals alike, all coming together to encourage small acts of selflessness. Whether it be time or donations, companies everywhere are actively involving themselves with a cause to create brand value. In 2015 $116.7 million dollars was raised online, $1.08 million total online were gifts, $700 thousand were from online donors. The day that heavily relies on social media had 114 billion Twitter impressions, 1.3 million social media mentions, and reached 917,313 users on Facebook. I’ll type it again- #GivingTuesday. Some of the top influencers include Matthew Bishop from The Economist, Kathy Calvin, CEO of Continued on Page 47.

It is much easier getting a ride home in a cab or with a friend than taking that dreaded ride with us to jail. Together, all of us can make sure that this season is a safe and happy one for everyone.” In New York State, drivers over the age of 21, who have a blood alcohol content (BAC) .08% or above will be charged with DWI. Underage drivers who are discovered driving under the influence of alcohol will be charged with DWI if their BAC is .02% or above. How Hillary Lost The Presidency

agree a perfect confluence of events occurred in the hours before the election that swung key electoral votes to Donald Trump.

By Rick Murphy

Those of us tuning in to the television around midnight Election Night might well have reached to adjust the color: The electoral map, which was supposed to be swathed in blue, was shockingly red-hued. The lesson learned above all others: the metrosexual liberals in New York City and the Hollywood celebs may get all the ink, but

national elections are decided in the heartland of this vast country. It was the most shocking upset in a Presidential race since Dewey/ Truman, and possibly of all time. In the days following Hillary Clinton’s startling defeat to Donald Trump on Election Day, experts analyzed the voting data in an attempt to understand the unthinkable. Yes, Clinton ruled the

coastlines – she had a 1.5 million vote plurality in New York State and a huge lead in California, but that’s precisely why electoral votes, and not popular votes, are used to decide the election – our forefathers did not want one or two of the largest states exerting their will over the others. Though even the experts disagree on some points, almost all

L u kewa r m S u p p o r t Fr o m Female Voters On October 7 a video capturing Trump saying lewd and disparaging things about women seemed to sound the death knell for his campaign. “When you’re a star,” he said into a hot microphone off the air, “they let you do it. You can do anything.” It was the nadir of his campaign, and talk in the following days was that Trump should resign from the race. Clinton, already comfortably ahead in the popular vote and in almost every swing state, saw her numbers skyrocket. She was 15 Continued on Page 16.

of the Trump tape. Throne-Holst pointed out Suffolk County is known nationally as a “bellwether” – voters here tend to be in sync with the national populace. “We reflect the national sentiment,” Throne-Holst said after the election. “Why aren’t women more galvanized? Women who live in poverty get sexually assaulted and no one knows about it . . . why aren’t women more offended?” In an op-ed piece published in the New York Times on November 9 Lindy West wrote, “We, as a culture, do not take women seriously on a profound level . . . We do not believe women. We do not trust women. We do not like women.” Indeed, Exhibit A is the relative lack of support for Hillary among female voters. Young women supported her by a 63-31 margin, meaning millions voted for Trump. In the key battleground states Hillary enjoyed only a 12 percent plurality among women. Clare Malone, writing for ESPN, pegged the problem simply: “Clinton couldn’t win over enough white women.” Consider Iowa: white women voted for Trump overall by a 5343 margin; Clinton barely eked out a majority of college educated

Though the mainstream media continued to insist the race was over, Trump’s numbers began inching up. After the second presidential debate the same scenario unfolded. Media talking heads trumpeted Clinton’s performance and polls indicated she had won the debate handily, but Trump was once again digging into the frontrunner’s lead. Anna Throne-Holst, like Clinton a Democrat (see accompanying article), was soundly defeated by the incumbent Lee Zeldin, an unabashed Trump supporter, in the race for the First Congressional District seat. Zeldin had a 10-point lead before Trump’s near-fatal gaffe, and prevailing wisdom assumed Throne-Holst could only benefit from Trump’s refusal to appear contrite for his sexist remarks and Zeldin’s refusal to criticize him. Yet Zeldin’s numbers went up higher considerably higher - in the wake

women, winning that segment 51-45. These numbers were much lower than pollsters predicted and down markedly from the support President Obama enjoyed four years ago. T h e N e w Yo r k T i m e s s a i d Democratic pollsters have blamed the loss on “a drifting of collegeeducated suburban women” to Trump in the final days of the campaign. The Times reported some Clinton donors complained about her “lack of a compelling message for white working-class voters.”

Midwest Firewall Clinton’s demise was cemented

when the unthinkable occurred: the Midwest Firewall collapsed. Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Iowa all went for Trump on Election Night, and Michigan, too close to call, also eventually fell. Pollsters, which showed leads for Clinton just days before the race, were flabbergasted, but in hindsight the danger signs were there for the Clinton camp to read and they were ignored. The breakdown didn’t begin with Trump, but with Bernie Sanders. The frail senator from New Hampshire blasted through the Midwest with guns ablaze, obliterating Clinton’s huge support base in a matter Continued on Page 17.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16. of weeks. His victory in the Ohio primary in March was once thought to be impossible. And talk about a bellwether – Ohio voters had correctly picked the winners of the presidential race in every election since 1968. Sanders also won Michigan – a state devastated by the NAFTA agreement Trump successfully blamed on President Bill Clinton, as well as West Virginia – coal miner’s country. Clinton and her advisors made the mistake of overestimating Clinton’s strength. They assumed a vote for Sanders was a vote for the Democratic nominee, but exit polls by Edison Research found instead many voters in those states, unhappy with the status quo, turned to Trump in the last week: the Republican candidate wasn’t particularly likeable or trustworthy, but he represented change.

The Washington Outsider Though the media continually painted Trump’s campaign as one in disarray, it also chose to minimize or ignore completely the energetic crowds who came to hear him speak – and his own hard work. Tr u m p z e r o e d i n o n t h e battleground states, repeatedly v i s i t i n g O h i o , Pe n n s y l v a n i a , Wisconsin, and Iowa, and also courted states thought to be safe Democratic havens like North Carolina and Minnesota. When he repeatedly promised to put a 35-percent tax on Ford automobiles made in Mexico the crowds would invariably erupt. In a blistering article about Trump’s demise, the Gray Lady all but pronounced the tycoon dead in the water, or as the Times stated, “falling into despair.” Published just two days before the election and written by a team of reporters supposedly embedded in the Trump campaign caravan led by Maggie Hagerman, the article focused on the gloom infecting the Trump camp. The Times almost gleefully “reported” the tension among Trump insiders. Worst of all, the article implied the election was over – there was really no point voting for Trump. But the Times’ version clashed with reality, according to Trump insiders. In fact, Trump’s digital director, Brad Parscale, was at that moment telling the candidate Pennsylvania was turning in his direction. “You can almost slice the excitement with a knife. You can feel it in the air,” Parscale said. But the Times reporters, on the same plane, felt the need to inject, “it’s

a state the polls show Clinton is winning.” Even as the New York Times was eagerly and prematurely publishing its “Clinton Wins” issue, the Clinton camp was the one in freefall. Clinton was supposed to end her campaign with a celebratory rally in Philadelphia with the Obamas the night before the election. Instead, the candidate, who fought off a bout with pneumonia during the campaign, was hustled back on the campaign plane for a midnight rally in Raleigh as her staff grappled with the alarming fact that Trump had moved ahead in that battleground state as well. She looked exhausted.

Biased Media, Erroneous Polls The New York Times, in an unprecedented move, actually apologized for its election coverage and acknowledged editors and publishers made a conscience decision to cast Trump in a bad light. For a newspaper that made its reputation on being objective, it was the last straw for a publication that has been leaning farther and farther left in recent years. And subscribers are bailing out, undoubtedly the reason for the mea culpa. But the Times was not alone. A few days before the election the cover of the New Yorker had a ghastly image of Trump with the word “Loser” stamped on his face. Not a single word was written in the mainstream media about it.

www.indyeastend.com

Yet in 2008 the same magazine published a much more benign caricature of Obama that outraged much of the Liberal nation and made headlines across the country. Critics called the image “gross, sick and pathetic” and demanded the resignation of the award winning artist Barry Blitt. The magazine’s editor, David Remnick, was forced to explain that it was satirical and said he believed “his readers are intelligent enough to get the joke.”

The Latino Surge Or Lack Thereof Much was made of the “Latino Surge” that would hand Clinton the White House. Once again the liberal news media fueled the fire. CNN said, “If Clinton wins, her coalition will consist of women, college-educated voters, and a swell of new Latino voters.” Post

election analysis reveals there was no swell. In early voting in states like Nevada and Florida, there was evidence of burgeoning Latino turnout that was played up by the media. The media picked up on the long lines and extended hours at a Latino grocery store in Nevada and decided it was a national trend. In reality, it was an outlier. The Atlantic reported, “Latino support lagged well behind Obama’s.” Debunking the myth perpetrated by the news media, “Latino turnout was only slightly higher than usual.” There were nine million Latino voters in 2008, and 10 million four years later. The total for 2016 will approach 11 million, hardly the upsurge predicted and in line with the number of new Latino residents who gained citizenship. Continued on Page 20.

found guilty of attempted murder Wednesday. Sabas Martinez, 47, was arrested after he shot Noemi Sanchez, 40, in her bedroom in February 2011. Martinez was tried last year however, the jury deadlocked on the attempted murder charge but found him guilty of Assault in the Second Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota opted for a retrial and once again sought a murder conviction; Martinez again chose a jury trial. Last Wednesday Martinez, now

Zeldin By The Numbers By Rick Murphy

Congressman Lee Zeldin easily outpolled his challenger Anna Throne-Holst in the western part of the First Congressional District. That was expected – that part of the district oftentimes goes Republican, though Democrat Tim Bishop, a six-term incumbent Zeldin beat two years ago, often did well there. District wide Zeldin, unofficially, tallied 174,682 votes (59 percent), easily besting Throne-Holst, 121,640 (41 percent) in one of the most watched races in the country. The two candidates combined to spend $7 million, and Throne-Holst survived a costly primary battle as well. The shocking part of Zeldin’s triumph was that he defeated Throne-Holst, a former three-term Southampton Town Supervisor, on her own turf. Unofficial results from the Suffolk Board of Elections show Zeldin tallied 12,213 votes in Southampton, outpacing ThroneHolst, who garnered 11,521. One factor was the defection of the Independence Party, which opted for Zeldin, a political Conservative, over Throne-Holst, a longtime leader of the local Independence Party who ran as a Democrat (10,370 votes) and also on the Working Families Party Line (550). Zeldin received 506 on the Independence Party line and tallied 1465 more on the Conservative Party line, and that proved the difference in Southampton. The congressman’s strength in the town was an eye-opener – Throne-Holst was a popular politician, earning three terms as supervisor and before that, a seat on the town board. She won each of her elections easily and enjoyed broad support. In addition, The Hamptons have long been a Democratic, Liberal hotbed and Throne-Holst figured to benefit greatly by having Hillary Continued on Page 20.

RICK’S SPACE Important Things To Ponder I called the suicide prevention hotline and they put me on hold. I have a medical condition that requires I take the prescription drug Viagra Falls. When a person you like passes gas it means she or he is inflatuated with you. Maybe they aren’t making the state mandated tests harder. Maybe the kids are getting dumber. Let me get this straight: His name is really Anthony Weiner? My heart is in the right place – the left side of my chest. A dog pooped in my carbon footprint. Remember coloring books and crayons? I never did get that big 128-crayon set with the built-in sharpener, and I resent my parents for it.

Doesn’t giblet gravy sound great with hot turkey and mashed potatoes? A “giblet” sounds like something sweet and cute, like a “Chicklet,” doesn’t it? For one day, stop worrying, whether it’s about health, money, your job, or politics. We live in paradise. Millions of people would give anything to be here, so lighten up and enjoy! The Comey Factor The FBI Director James Comey raised eyebrows when he concluded, after an extensive investigation, that Clinton’s use of a private email server, although ill advised and

against the law, did not warrant her arrest. But Comey reopened his investigation when the FBI learned 600,000 of Hillary’s emails had found their way into the hands of former Congressman Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Clinton’s most trusted aide, Huma Abedin. Comey closed out his investigation two days before the election, but Clinton herself blamed Comey for bringing the matter up again, and exit polls revealed it fed into the distrust voters felt about her. Yet the issue wouldn’t have been

settled whether Comey came back on the scene or not. Republicans, and Trump, have vowed to prosecute Clinton regardless of the outcome of the election, and polls showed the matter weighed on voters. Comey said in July Clinton was “extremely careless” and that her emails likely fell into the wrong hands. He also stated he had “chosen” not to press charges, meaning there was possibly enough culpability to have the former Secretary of State arrested. Of course it didn’t help Clinton that Weiner, who is accused of texting obscene photos to an underage teenager and is a reviled figure, literally had full access to the inner workings of the US government while Clinton was the Secretary of State.

The Backlash The Blue States traditionally vote Democrat because they identify the party as being in tune with the working class. But Trump clearly stole that designation and Clinton unwittingly played into it. The columnist Maureen Callahan said part of the blame should be placed on “Hollywood’s lefty stars.” In the days before the election, while Trump was vowing to “Make America great again” and create good paying jobs for American workers Clinton was enveloped by wealthy celebrities: Jay Z, Beyoncé, LeBron James, Jennifer Lawrence and Bruce Springsteen but also by

some more controversial celebs like Miley Cyrus, Jon Stewart, Alec Baldwin and Samantha Bee. “Hollywood Liberals . . . and the coastal elite are out of touch with mainstream America,” Callahan said. They were preaching to the choir but it was Trump who delivered the message middle class America wanted to hear: “The forgotten man and woman will never be forgotten again,” he Tweeted. Bill Maher perhaps summed it up best: “Democrats, to a lot of Americans, have become a boutigue party of fake outrage. The party has lost the white working man.”

Obamacare It was the one anchor Clinton couldn’t untie from her foot. HMO rates skyrocketed across the nation and the people adversely affected got the grim news just a few days before the election. Clinton tried to distance herself, but her entire campaign was based on continuing the policies of the current administration. Trump, on the other hand, vowed to trash Obamacare (ACA) and repeated the vow everywhere he went. Ironically, after meeting with President Obama two days after his victory, Trump said he was open to keeping key parts of the ACA in place.

In contrast Zeldin seemed anchored with Trump at the top of his ticket, especially after the October 7 debacle when Trump was caught making sexist and misogynistic remarks on videotape. Yet Zeldin never waivered in his commitment to Trump or his belief the challenger would prevail and defeat Clinton, and he was right. Trump outpolled Clinton 328,403 to 276,953 in Suffolk County. Zeldi n sh o w e d surpri si n g strength in Eastern Southampton Village and outpolled Throne-Holst in most of the election districts west of the Shinnecock Canal with the exception of Flanders/ Riverside, long a liberal enclave, and a geographical pocket in and around Westhampton Beach. Zeldin had the overwhelming support of the Brookhaven Town electorate, winning a 35,000-vote plurality – and also easily carried Riverhead and Southold towns.

astrology & all Week of: 11/23/16 11/30/16 Highlights of the week:

Mercury (planet of all communications) enters chatty Sagittarius on Wednesday, after weeks in moody silent Scorpio. Expect people to be talking but Saturn (the planet of restriction and structure) also enters Sagittarius the same day. This can lead to power struggles with words that may lead to unresolved arguments. Be careful driving, too. As tensions simmer under the surface, please choose love over righteousness this Thanksgiving. The New Moon in Sagittarius on Tuesday means it’s time to organize and write out your list of wishes, hopes, and dreams. Let the Universe make them come true. On November 30, Venus (planet of love) fights with Uranus (planet of surprises and electricity) so you can either be hit by a bolt of love lightening, screaming at your mate, or inspired to start a new creative project. ARIES (3/20 - 4/20) Shed the self pity and focus on your goals. It is important for you to present your side of the situation gracefully. Things are progressing even if it’s too slow for you. Think outside the box. TAURUS (4/21 - 5/20) Partnerships of all kinds are up for review or revival. Growth and contentment surround you not only at home, but at the job, too. You have reasons to be grateful. GEMINI (5/21 - 6/22) Offer a helping hand to a friend, neighbor, or sibling and you will be rewarded tenfold. If money is involved, be sure you can afford it. Someone from your past may contact you or you hear it through the grapevine. CANCER (6/22 - 7/22) If the past comes up, try to put painful memories to rest. Suffering does not have to be repeated and this is your time to rebuild

your life with new hope. Count your blessings. LEO (7/22 - 8/22) Great week to start more meaningful/creative activities. Attend to your duties but find the time to plan for your dreams, which will come true with some attention. A new opportunity at work is on the horizon. VIRGO (8/23 - 9/22) Your hard work will be rewarded, but if you have slacked off on responsibilities you will face the consequences. Give your partner the benefit of the doubt as daily stresses often preoccupy us all. LIBRA (9/23 - 10/22) Frustrations at work are nothing new. Wait until after the holidays to make any moves. Life is about to change on all fronts, but for now just enjoy where you are. S C O R P I O (10/23 - 11/21) Transformation is slowly underway in your life. What doesn’t work will fall away naturally, so don’t worry. Whether in love or in work, you can wait a little longer to make changes. SAGITTARIUS (11/22 - 12/21) Repairs of all kinds are on the agenda this week. Since you handle people so well, you may be asked to resolve a disagreement. Be sure to use humor and all will end well. CAPRICORN (12/21 - 1/20) Love is in the air and it’s time to let your hair down. Show those you love just how much and you will be very happily rewarded. Children become important this week. AQUARIUS (1/20 - 2/19) Take any criticism with a grain of salt. If true, improve what you can and move on. You may be offered a promotion at work but it comes with more work. Romance can deepen, the choice is yours. PISCES (2/10 - 3/20) Whatever plans you have cooking on the back burner may take more time. Don’t worry, because you will achieve your goals. Don’t close the door on love. However, trust will be a big issue. Everyone is born with a unique horoscope. At birth the placement of your planets determines your talents, your strengths, and the challenges within your personality. Continued from page 18. residence with their three children after he was released from prison. After several years they had a falling out, and according to court testimony he was asked to leave the premises and subsequently threatened her. Martinez had been arrested 10 times, including 3 arrests on DWI charges, according to court records. Police reported that Martinez, then 39, broke into the Squaw Road house late on February 12, 2011 despite the fact Sanchez had gone to police just days earlier complaining about his conduct. When Sanchez returned home at about 1:30 AM he pounced on her. With two of his daughters watching in terror police said Martinez shot Sanchez with an air rifle and stabbed her in the head with a kitchen knife before his two daughters were able to convince him to let their mother go. He then cut his neck and wrists. His daughters persuaded him to leave their mother alone and police were called. Despondent, Martinez was placed on suicide watch and held without bail as a flight risk – he comes from Mexico. Meanwhile, he was indicted by a Grand Jury. Sanchez was treated at Stony Book University Medical Center after she was attacked and eventually healed. Martinez will be sentenced on December 15. He faces 25 years in prison.

Falsettos

(& Sometimes Off)

By Isa Goldberg

Watching this revival of Falsettos on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre, one feels as though its time is now - more so even, than when it premiered in 1992. Then, William Finn and James Lapine’s musical brought the AIDS epidemic into focus. Still, the narrative revolves around the break-up of a nuclear family and the emergence of a blended one. That would have been something of an anomaly in the ‘90s, and certainly in the late ‘70s/ early ‘80s when the play is set. Today, with marriage equality, blended families are far more commonplace. At the center of it all is a coming-of-age story. By Act II, Jason (Anthony Rosenthal)

is preparing for his Bar Mitzvah. His father, Marvin (Christian Borle) is living with his gay lover, Whizzer (Andrew Rannells). And his mother, (Stephanie J. Block) has married again . . . to Marvin’s psychiatrist (Brandon Uranowitz). As Marvin, Christian Borle is cynical and entitled, but ultimately loveable. His is a role that requires significantly more depth than his signature Broadway appearances in musical comedies, the last of which was Something Rotten. Playing his young lover, Andrew Rannells (The Book of Mormon) is tall, handsome, and sensitive, with an awesome stage presence. And Stephanie J. Block tells a story in song like no other.

Her “I’m Breaking Down” evokes the power and shrillness of Ethyl Merman. As helmed by James Lapine, who wrote the book with William Finn, the narrative feels as though it’s been streamlined, into a concert version of William Finn’s poetic, melodic songs. Fastpaced, the story rockets into place with Spencer Liff’s vigorous choreography, which underscores the story. David Rockwell’s scenic design, on the other hand, lives in an abstract reality. Various oversized soft grey cubes,

mocking both children’s blocks and the concrete structures we move within, are set against backdrops of the New York City skyline. There’s no fluff here. Unto the nature of our spinning world, the production resonates with the high pitched pace of modern life. There is no time for sentimentality or loss, even though loss happens. Les Liaisons Dangereuses In the Donmar Warehouse Production of Les Liaison Dangereuses, at the Booth Theatre on Broadway, the scandalous love affairs of 18th century French aristocrats conspire to amuse, if nothing else. To that end, he or she who amuses best, is the winner. And with Janet McTeer (La Marquise de Merteuil) and Liev Schreiber (Le Vicomte de Valmont) on the stage, the stakes are as high as they get. McTeer, who won our hearts for her dramatic portrayals in plays such as A Doll’s House and Mary Stuart, plays an evil seductress here. To the Marquise, the game of crossed love, and the skill of manipulation, are entirely the motive. Schreiber, more the master of daunting sexuality, behaves with a ruthless, albeit comedic edge. Still, Christopher Hampton’s play based on the novel by Choderlos de Laclos, scrutinizes the perception of desire among the very rich. Unto that end, the comedy titillates with amorous scenes and deceptions. Directed by Josie Rourke, Tom Scutt’s period costumes play into the spectacle, while his set – velvet chaise center stage, and peeling paint on the walls - is all we need to recognize decay. A Life Adam Bock’s, A Life, at Playwrights Horizons through December 3 only, is a poetic reflection about loneliness and the uncertainty that comes with it. Nate Martin, played by the unusually affable David Hyde Pierce, is lovelorn and lonesome, but what makes him tick, or what galvanizes this story escaped me. “The truth is impossible to find, and it’s almost impossible to hold on to,” he opines early in this 90-minute drama, most of which is his monologue. That there is no explanation for what happens to him, resonates a kind of theatrical existentialism. In fact, his outcome is oddly perverse, and something of a shocker. Laura Jellinek’s set design unfolds that mystery in the most bizarre way. Directed by Anne Kauffman the story settles comfortably into the ineffable nature of Bock’s drama, and with an edge of necromancy that is also pretty creepy.

S chool D ays Springs School Fifth graders Julian, Isaac, and Ares discovered through their older siblings that junior high English teacher Adam Osterweil is a published author. The boys took it upon themselves to read M r. O s t e r w e i l ’ s m o s t r e c e n t book, Cooper and the Enchanted Metal Detector. After they read the book, which is about an imaginative boy and his beloved metal detector, the boys were treated to their very own “treasure hunt” with a mini metal detector, and “treasures” that Mr. Osterweil had hidden in his classroom.

“Mr. O. has found so many coins and other things right here on Long Island!” said Julian. “It’s really inspiring.”

Westhampton Beach School District Westhampton Beach High School students participated in several Red Ribbon Week activities that were organized by the school’s Youth to Youth Club earlier this month. Throughout the week, Youth to Youth Club members shared daily awareness messages over the school’s public address system, handed out “Drug-Free” bracelets,

In learning about the first Thanksgiving, Hampton Bays Elementary School kindergarteners in Mindy Brown’s class recently decorated a Thanksgiving bulletin board outside their classroom. The board features a table covered in traditional Thanksgiving foods. Sitting around the table are images of the students dressed as pilgrims and their teachers as Native Americans.

Insight

“Let us be grateful for the people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” ~~ Marcel Proust. This week, we’ve got Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday – plenty of days ahead to get our shopping on. But the big event leading to the days of unfettered consumerism is Thursday. On that day, let’s focus on gratitude and giving thanks. Here at Indy we’re so grateful for our loyal readers and advertisers. You’re the ones who keep our garden in bloom and the ones who, we believe, make the East End the most beautiful place in the world. But don’t just take our word for it, as we urge the community to give thanks for all our riches, check out quotes from others way wittier and more erudite than we are. (And aren’t we grateful for the Internet and quote compilations!) “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” ~ William Arthur Ward “When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.” ~ Maya Angelou “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.” ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” ~ Epicurus “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” ~ Albert Einstein “If the only prayer you said was thank you, that would be enough.”~ Meister Eckhart “It is impossible to be both grateful and depressed. Those with a grateful mindset tend to see the message in the mess. And even though life may knock them down, the grateful find reasons, if even small ones, to get up.” ~ Steve Maraboli “Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul.” ~ Henry Ward Beecher

Independent VOICES

Things Are Looking Up Dear Editor, Even having supported Clinton and being greatly disappointed in her loss, I am now, somehow, cautiously optimistic about Trump since announcing Reince Priebus as his Chief of Staff. Yet, Trump choosing Steve Bannon as his Senior

Strategic Advisor is somewhat bewildering. And rumors of Bolton for Secretary of State simply scare the shit out of me. But let’s wait and see what The Donald does before discounting his POTUS victory. Ryan just got re-elected as House Speaker; Sessions is up for some major cabinet post (maybe Attorney General or Secretary of State); and Schumer will become Senate Minority leader. All major minds and experienced “Establishment” politicos, who put “America First” and Party second; and want to get things done for all

Ed Gifford people. That is very encouraging! At the same time, there is also talk of Giuliani for something. Director of Homeland Security makes good sense to me, but that’s about it. After that and LOL, perhaps Ambassador to Burundi. That said and however things unfold, the truly good news about Trump is that he

picked Mike Pence as his Veep and new head of the transition team. A highly experienced governor and true voice-of-reason. And finally, for the all-important post of U.S. Secretary of Defense, Trump should keep Ash Carter because this no time for “rookies” regarding National defense and global military initiatives. BILL CRANDALL

Is it just me? Here’s to getting a drumstick, since since you ate them both last year!

© Karen Fredericks

That was definitely fowl play!

Ride Those Brakes, Baby Get ready to go slow. Real slow. State Senator Ken LaValle and State Assemblyman Fred Thiele announced this week that Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation allowing the Villages of East Hampton and Sag Harbor to reduce the speed limit on select streets to 20 miles per hour. The Village of Sag Harbor will reduce the speed limit on Main Street, Bay Street, Madison Street, and Jermain Avenue and the Village of East Hampton will reduce the speed limit on King Street, McGuirk Street, Middle Lane, Mill Hill Lane and Meadow Way to 20 mph. Both villages had approached state lawmakers with the request.

By Karen Fredericks

How will you spend Thanksgiving? Deborah Engel I’m spending it here with my son who is coming home from college, down south in Atlanta. We’ll also be having family and friends joining us. It will be a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. And of course, I’ll be doing the cooking.

Erica Yardley My whole family is travelling to Manchester, Vermont to visit our family members who live there. There are about nine of us going. There will be a turkey, and everything else you expect at a Thanksgiving dinner. And my sister and I are doing the cooking. Randy Tabor We’re going to be out here from New York City. The whole family. There’ll be about 15 of us. My husband will do all of the cooking. He does the cooking all the time. But I’ll do the side dishes. We’re going to try and serve as many local vegetables as possible. Alan Katz I’m cooking for Thanksgiving for our nine guests. My daughters will bring things like the vegetables. My wife usually cooks for the holiday but this year I’m grabbing a turn. But she’ll be managing the whole thing. I do my share in the kitchen cooking breakfast year round.

He looks forward to reinventing the chamber and helping to create more community events that bring people together. He aims to grow the local economy together and bring people into town for family-friendly events such as Music & Arts festivals. Also, he wants to promote the changing demographics of East Hampton and make people aware of the yearround beauty and wide range of things to do at East Hampton all year long. Ringel brings a wide range of ideas to the East Hampton Chamber for fostering community, including more family-friendly events, an upscale art and wine festival, a music festival, and a street fair on Newtown Lane in the springtime. He anticipates finding imaginative approaches to bring individuals downtown amid the winter and spring to support local businesses and neighborhood organizations.

shopping locally. What better time than the holidays to do this? Holiday dinner ingredients, decorations, and of course presents can all be bought locally. The day after Black Friday has become the ultimate day for shopping local and is now known as Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday was officially commemorated November 27, 2010 with its founding partner American Express. Since then, more than 200 organizations have joined up with the company’s unit for small businesses, American Express OPEN, in declaring the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday. It is now trending on different social media with millions of supporters. The site SHOP.com was created this past March to allow local businesses to register as members so that more customers can be directed to their shop, and current customers can link their credit

cards to the site in order to receive cash back. If you own a business of your own, SHOP.com is a great site and app that has just begun to trend. Local shop owner Joe Maio said, “Most people don’t want to shop at large malls and wait around for parking, it’s [shopping locally] more pleasant.” He sees an increase of customers on Small Business Saturday at his shop Adornments in Sag Harbor where you can find beautiful artisan jewelry and other accessories including handbags. Everything in the shop is created by numerous designers, some wellknown and others are “hidden gems.”. Many of the restaurants on the East End also shop locally to create their menus so that even when not at home, community members can still be using local products. Bridgehampton’s Almond offers mostly local products. Their everchanging menu develops based on which ingredients can be found at the moment on the East End. The restaurant’s staff shops at local farms, such as Lavender By the Bay in East Marion and Goodwater

Farms in Bridgehampton and East Hampton, and other local businesses like Southampton’s Plain-T and Mecox Bay Dairy in Bridgehampton. East Ender Steve Roux previously helped run Goodwater Farms and is now a mixologist at Almond. Almost all of his shopping is done locally including what he chooses for the drinks he helps to create. Roux’s father passed away due to working with the chemical Agent Orange, still found in pesticides today. Roux prefers to avoid non-local businesses, because he believes, “It’s not going to taste as good, it’s not an integral part of our community, it’s not special.” Some local businesses on the East End have become members of the organization Independent We Stand. Its networking website and app are where owners and their customers can take the pledge to shop local and support one another. Small Business Saturday is an ideal time to add momentum to the Shop Local movement. Help out your community by taking the pledge and continuing to support neighbors’ businesses.

Missing Children Drill In the most recent monthly drill, members of East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue took part in a “Missing Children’s Drill” at Georgica Pond in East Hampton. Each month, the rescue organization trains for emergencies that might occur around the waters of East Hampton Town. This month, in coordination with East Hampton Village Police Department and Marine Patrol, Chief Michael Forst designed a pre-plan on how and where emergency responders would deal with a “missing children scenario” at Georgica Pond. Rescue squads were toned out for two missing children that had been last seen playing near Georgica Pond. Command was staged at the end of Cove Hollow Road where East Hampton Village Police mobilized their Mobile Command Unit Van in coordination with East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue for the “Search and Rescue” call. As the jet ski was launched into Cove Hollow Creek, Ocean Rescue teams of Stand-Up-Paddle boarders were created to search the three remote fingers and two remote coves of the pond. Both children, represented by simulated rescue mannequins, were successfully found.

she said, adding, “I like to use my hands.” Knitting and crocheting took the place of drawing cards. Displaying examples of her art, Hamiwka showed pieces that range from a simple drawing of a gowned woman at a mailbox for Valentine’s Day to an intricate jungle scene for a birthday. Making Easter cards was her favorite because, she shrugged, “I like to draw bunnies.” Hamiwka sometimes used her computer to copy and replicate her drawings. Granddaughter Brooke Santiago noted that she received cards all her life. “I like it a lot, it’s very original,” the 16-year old junior at East Hampton High School said. When she contacted The Independent about publishing her mother’s artwork, Arkinson said, “Every time she sees art in the paper,” she says, ‘I could draw that.’” “I do,” Hamiwka acknowledged, unabashed. At this point of the year you pretty much know where you stand with your season long fantasy teams – either you’re going to make the playoffs or you’re not. Either way, unless you have a couple of basketball teams, you face a lonely winter. However, there is always Daily Fantasy Sports, and if you haven’t started playing yet I’m willing to wager you are considering it. What’s holding you back, you’re embarrassed to admit, is you aren’t sure how to play. Well. It isn’t brain surgery, but unless you are prepared to lose a lot of money, listen up.

into the larger tournaments where there are say, 100 players and the top 50 get paid. And play for a dollar or two, no more. Still, the sharks lurk. They might put 30 or even 50 teams in a 100man pool and on the average win 70 percent or more of them. The way around that is to enter tournaments that limit the amount of players. Yahoo DFS offers lots of single elimination tournaments, so that’s a good place to start.

Tournament Play These are the big-ticket games that attract all of the attention and make Fantasy players instant millionaires. So is Lotto, and your odds of winning are roughly the same. In a tournament where the top prize is $1 million, only five percent of the players will win money, and most just a modest amount. That means you could be better than 94 percent of the other players and lose money. Here’s how to play: consider tournament games like Lotto and spend the same amount on them that you would on lottery tickets – after all, most lottery games pay 50 percent or less than the amount taken in, while Fantasy gives back 90 cents of every dollar. The Play Professionals ante up thousands of dollars a night and use sophisticated algorithms and computer programs like scripting to maximize their chances of winning (notice I didn’t say “guarantee”). Professionals like Jeff Mans and Tommy G. espouse a more practical approach. Mans plays one-onone games all week and uses his profit for the big money weekend

tournament games. If he doesn’t win during the week, he doesn’t play in the big money games (or so he says). Tommy G. allocates 80 percent of his money to one-on-one games and the balance to tournament games. That means if you can win roughly six of 10, you can break even. Not a bad strategy.

Ceiling And Floor When picking a team for tournament play, choose players with the most upside – players who might explode on any given day. That means they are playing in a game that figures to be high scoring, that the weather is ideal, and the player will receive a lot of playing time. When picking a team for oneon-one play, choose players who are reliable, who always put points on the board, and seldom get hurt. Work Versus Play Those of us who love Fantasy sports have played for years with no monetary incentives. Some of the best leagues are in-house leagues between family and friends where no money is exchanged — but bragging rights are. That said, if you are playing DFS to win money, learn the facts: there are no shortcuts, and most players lose consistently. Yes, I was lucky enough to win a couple big tournaments, but I’m smart enough to know they are few and far between. I look at this as a job: I study hard, do my research, and stay within my budget. If I can win a couple hundred bucks a week it’s like a second job, except you are doing something you love instead of flipping burgers, so you really do have it your way.
