Good Ground Awarded Grants By Emily Toy

Southampton Town was awarded $943,000 in grant money from the state to further the development and implementation of Good Ground Park in Hampton Bays. Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement at the 2014 Regional Economic Development Grant Awards last Thursday. With an opening day expected in the summer of 2016 for the 36-acre park, the money is slated to come through shortly after the new year. Most of the construction for the new park will most likely start by this coming summer. “Good Ground Park is one step closer to becoming a reality due to the Supervisor Anna ThroneHolst and town board’s consistent work and support over the last 18 months,” said Kevin McDonald, a

Hampton Bays resident and long time supporter of the park project. “This park, when finished, will transform the hamlet in great ways. What a terrific holiday surprise for the community.” The park will feature an amphitheater at its center as well as picnic areas, public bathrooms, hiking trails, biking trails, and playgrounds. New Jersey-based MKW Landscape Architecture will serve as the design firm. Designs drafted call for the park to be connected to Main Street through greenbelts. A grant of $500,000 was awarded through the NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Department. It will be used to further subsidize the hamlet’s downtown revitalization as well as the construction and development of

the amphitheater, site preparation and landscaping for the park. A second grant in the amount of $443,000 was awarded through the Empire State Development Office and will support the downtown revitalization efforts associated with the development of Good Ground Park, according to a press release from the town. The grant announcements described Good Ground Park as a “key element in an ongoing

downtown revitalization effort and is envisioned as the downtown anchor that will increase economic activity and livability within the central business district.” It will be located north of West Montauk Highway. Marion Boden, a member of the Hampton Bays Civic Association and long time proponent of the park expressed support for the project Continued on Page 21.

CHRISTMAS EVE IN BROOKLYN

It wasn’t about Christmas Day for us. Christmas Day was about turkeys and hams and cranberry sauce. That wasn’t our food. The holiday ads of the time showed illustrations of waspylooking, Norman Rockwell types bowing their blond heads in prayer before they chowed down the traditional Christmas Day fare. This wasn’t us. It’s not that we had anything against this. It’s just that our parents and grandparents were still desperately holding on to Italy and the Italian customs they brought to this country. We knew we had little in common with the people who owned this country, but Christmas was the one holiday equalizer. It was something we all shared. We just chose to celebrate the birth of Christ the night before Christmas instead of on the day itself. So my memories are Christmas Eve reminiscences, and they’re sweet and pleasant to recall. I remember my grandmother starting to prepare the Christmas

Eve dinner in early October by pickling cauliflower and onions and peppers and anchovies . . . The sweet smell of chestnuts as they burned until they were inedible (we forgot them in the oven every year) . . . My mom haggling with the man who sold Christmas trees on Avenue U . . . She would buy the tree on the night of December 24. She always wanted to pay 50 cents. He would always hold out for a dollar. “You won’t be able to sell it in a few hours,” she would taunt. “I’d rather burn them,” he would reply. Every year they would settle at 75 cents . . . I remember eels being cut up in little pieces, dipped in egg, and dredged in flour. Then, after they were tossed into a skillet in hot oil, the pieces would start to wiggle. It was right out of a horror movie. It made me wonder about life after death . . . I remember how I would sneak into our tiny kitchen and sweettalk my grandmother into giving me a taste of the mountain of food

she had cooked for our family. The meal started with pinkie-sized, crisp little nameless fish that were fried and were to be eaten whole. Then came the polpo (octopus), which was cooked in a garlicky tomato broth. There was a rich, briny, clam sauce waiting to be tossed with linguini; shrimps baked, fried, breaded; baccala (cod), which had been bought dry and soaked for days, now rested in a platter, smothered with fried onions and capers. A fish salad with every delicious fish in the sea, swimming in garlic and lemon and olive oil. Today, so many, many years later, I marvel that the memory can still make my mouth water . . . All of our Christmas Eve meals started at 7 PM when my father came home from work. At 11 PM – four hours of solid eating later – it was time for dessert. There was fresh fruit for the faint of heart, but the diehards would dive into the white cardboard boxes that were filled with dozens of Italian pastries with wonderful names like cannoli, pasticciotto, sfogliatella. We wouldn’t stop eating until the boxes were empty. Each morsel, every crumb, was a way of holding on to the holiday for a few minutes more . . . I remember one year my grandfather, perhaps a little tipsy from the combination of food and drink, helped me to set aside a glass of red wine for Santa. It was empty when I woke up the next day . . . We were pretty broke, but somehow Santa managed to bring me everything I ever wanted. The best present I ever got was a new Schwinn bicycle. It shows you what a trip to Beneficial Finance could do to make the spirits bright . . . I took a chilly subway train ride

with my dad one Christmas Eve in search of phonograph needles so we could play an old-fashioned phonograph and listen to some ancient Italian records. We found the needles in a little shop near Coney Island. When we rushed home and tried to play the records, we discovered that the phonograph motor was worn down and Enrico Caruso sounded like he was on Quaaludes. Not that anyone ever heard of Quaaludes in those days. The only drugs we knew were called Luckys and Camels and Chesterfields . . . When I was 16, my parents bought me a 45 rpm record player and gave it to me on Christmas Eve. That night, I had just one 45 record (Doris Day singing “Secret Love”). I listened to the same song over and over and over and fell in love with the blond, freckled singer. I still can’t hear that song without thinking of that night . . . Then there was the Christmas Eve night that Manlio “Junior” Fossatti (age 11) decided to tell me (age nine) that there wasn’t any Santa Claus. He told me while we waited in the 86th Street station of the Sea Beach line for our fathers to come home from work. While he was at it, he also told me about sex. You lose one, you win one, I always say . . . The Christmas tree ornaments were mostly handmade and had been around since the 1920s. My favorite was a little porcelain Betty Boop character. I realize now it was as close to a family heirloom as we got . . . Every Christmas Eve at midnight, Mrs. Calabrese from across the street (I was born on the secondfloor apartment of her house – she was the midwife) would bring us a platter filled with hot zeppoli, which was simply fried puffs of dough covered with honey. My brother Joe and I would burn our fingers and tongues racing to be sure to get the last piece . . . The night before Christmas on West 7th Street in Brooklyn was always the best night of the year. The food was so delicious – it will always exist in our memories. It was a time when the language spoken was Italian with just enough English thrown in to remind us where we lived. It was a time when young couples walked past our windows as they went to midnight Mass at St. Simon and Jude Church or Our Lady of Grace Church. It was a time when life was easy . . . The night before Christmas on West 7th Street in Brooklyn. It’s with me at this time every year. If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@ dfjp.com.

Microbeads, Macro Problem By Kitty Merrill

They make your skin so soft, your teeth so white . . . and our waterways so polluted and marine life so sick. The Suffolk County Legislature and Albany lawmakers are both considering banning the tiny plastic microbeads used in personal care products like facial scrubs and toothpaste. The miniscule pieces of plastic are used to exfoliate dead skin. But what’s nice for your face is far from nice to the environment and marine life. Microbeads are so small, they easily wash down the drain and too small to be filtered, even in areas with wastewater facilities, they make their way into the water, coating the floors of lakes and choking out plant life. Mistaking them for fish eggs, some marine creatures eat them and, even worse, the microbeads can act like sponges, soaking up other pollutants like motor oil and pesticides. Earlier this year New York State Attorney Eric Schneiderman reported an estimated 19 plus tons of microbeads are released into New York’s wastewater system each year.

Microbeads in many personal care products like facial scrub are polluting the nation’s waterways. Some Suffolk County lawmakers want to ban them.

Last June Illinois became the first state to ban the plastic particles. An extended timeline stretching out five years gives manufacturers time to find natural alternatives. In Suffolk County, Legislator Kara Hahn from the fifth district in Port Jefferson is the woman behind the proposed bead ban. Last month the legislature passed her bill calling for a study of the environmental and economic impact of a microbead ban. “On the macro level,” she said, “there is no doubt that microbeads are finding their way into our nation’s rivers, lakes and oceans. What we need to know is to what extent, locally, these additives are impacting on our environment and if corrective action is needed, what ramifications would be expected.” According to a Huffington Post article published last spring, the ban in Illinois went through thanks to cooperation from the industry. Big companies like Proctor Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, Colgate, Unilever and L’Oreal plan to replace the plastic beads with natural alternatives like ground fruit pits, oatmeal, or salt. Some companies, like Burt’s Bees, and products like the St. Ives almond scrub pictured on page 27, already use natural products. (The almond scrub uses walnut shells, go figure.) The years-long phase out seems to be a key component of successful bills. The state assembly passed legislation calling for a microbead ban, but it’s languishing in the senate, with a comparatively quick timetable a sticking point. Continued on Page 27.

Abused Woman Awarded A Mil By Kitty Merrill

Nancy Genovese got much, much more than she bargained for when she took a picture at Gabreski Airport in Westhampton back in 2009. Jailed, humiliated, robbed, and injured, she launched a lawsuit alleging malicious prosecution by county sheriffs a year later. Last week a jury awarded her $1.112 million compensation for pain and suffering. Jurors will decide punitive damages at a later date. On July 30, 2009, the East Quogue mother of three was driving on County Road 31 when she came upon the Air National Guard base at Gabreski. There was a helicopter shell on display and she pulled over to snap a picture for a “Support our Troops website. She parked her car

in a public area. As she prepared to drive away, an off duty police officer flagged her down and asked what she was doing. Southampton Town Police Lieutenant Robert Iberger (since retired) contacted the ANG base and Suffolk County Sheriffs. Without her consent, according to her attorney Frederick Brewington, Iberger searched Genovese’s vehicle and found a rifle. Genovese was on her way home from the local shooting range, and by then had already handed over her camera’s memory card in an effort to prevent damage to her camera. Court papers report what the responding deputy sheriff said after he arrived and grabbed the rifle,

holding it in a “dangerous fashion: “I bet you are one of those Tea Party people and “You’re a real rightwinger, aren’t you? and “You are a ‘Teabagger.’ Deputy Sheriff Robert Carlock said he would arrest her for terrorism to make an example of other “right wingers. Genovese was charged with third degree criminal trespass and held on $50,000 bail. Her car sat on the side of the road as she was arrested, and her two sons were not allowed to retrieve property, including cash, from the car for a period of time. When they finally could, several thousand dollars was missing. A release from Brewington reports Genovese was incarcerated for four days in Suffolk County Jail. “During

that time, she was subjected to humiliation, strip search, verbal and physical abuse and denial to legal counsel and access to medical care for a leg injury which became seriously infected, the release states. She was also placed under suicide watch, and Sheriff’s Department officials circulated a press release, “riddled with false claims, including claiming Ms. Genovese wandered around near the ANG base and that she had been told not to return on prior occasions, which led to Ms. Genovese being labeled a terrorist and other false names in the press and on the Internet, according to Brewington. She was released after making bail and in November of 2009, the charges against Genovese were dismissed. Genovese filed a federal lawsuit against Iberger, the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County, and the sheriffs in July of 2010. Over time, other parties were removed from the suit till just the sheriffs remained. Last Thursday, after an eight-day trial, the jury found in Genovese’s favor and decided the award. In a release about the case’s conclusion, she said, “This is a relief that the Jury heard the truth and that I now have had the chance to clear my name. If this can happen to me, and officers can abuse their power like this, I can only imagine how other people who are not as fortunate as me have been treated.

Obituary Marines on Memorial Day, May 30, 1946 at Bainbridge, Maryland. It was there, at a Memorial Day service he attended, that he volunteered to play “Taps.” It was to be the first of 64 consecutive years of doing so, mostly at Agawam Park in Southampton. In 1947, he went into the family business with his father. In 1962, he took over the company from his dad who had decided to retire. Emil’s wife, Anna, also worked in the business as bookkeeper and office

Emil Norsic, 95

Emil Norsic was born in Sag Harbor on January 9, 1920, and attended school there until 1933 when he moved to Southampton. Even though the country was in the midst of a deep economic depression Emil was able to find work as a golf caddy. He managed to save the astonishing sum of $500 with which he was able to help his dad purchase a small sanitation business which included two barely serviceable trucks. From those most humble beginnings, the firm we know today as Emil Norsic and Son was born. Emil went through high school in Southampton where he participated in sports, earning letters in basketball, football, and baseball. He also excelled in music, playing in the school band and a small jazz combo band where he earned many honors at competitions throughout New York State. Despite his heavy schedule, Emil worked after school and in the summers helping his father in the business. In 1938, at a wedding where he was best man, Emil met the pretty young girl he would eventually marry, Anna Raynor of Hampton Bays. Emil went on to complete high school in Southampton and then, in 1940, he went to technical school in New Jersey where he became an expert at welding aluminum. After graduation, he took a job with Grumman Aircraft as a welding instructor. Emil worked at Grumman for two and a half years until in December of 1943, when he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He went through boot camp at Parris Island, and then was transferred to Cherry Point Marine Air Station in North Carolina where, because of his skills, he was assigned to work as a welder/instructor. Emil spent the war in that job and was finally discharged from the

Legislature’s Local Lottery Winner

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and members of the county legislature selected 19 homeowners to receive a free advanced wastewater treatment system as part of groundbreaking pilotprogram to greatly reduce nitrogen contamination in the county’s water supply. The homeowners were chosen by lottery Monday at a meeting of the Legislature. Philip Smyth of Remsenburg was a local winner, his name drawn by Legislator Jay Schneiderman. “Advanced wastewater treatment systems for homeowners are a vital part of the solution to our water quality crisis. While this is not the single solution, this is one of the initiatives we are doing to reclaim our water here in Suffolk County. . . This is a great deal for homeowners who want a free advanced system and want to help be a part of solving our water quality crisis,” Bellone said. The advanced wastewater treatment systems are valued at up to $15,000 per system.

Tuckahoe School The Reading Department at Tuckahoe School is very excited to begin its Tuckahoe Literacy Corps (TLC) Program in January. This program provides several of our students in the lower grades with one to one adult reading time each week. In the past, this program has been very successful in helping students develop their interest in and enjoyment of reading due to the time they spend reading with our adult reading volunteers. At this time, we are in need of adult volunteers who may be interested in joining our program. Being a TLC Volunteer requires spending 40 minutes one day each week reading with a child throughout the remainder of the school year. All reading materials and a training session are provided by the school district. Please contact our Reading Coordinator, Bonnie Downs, at Tuckahoe School at 631-283-3550 ext. 112 to join our Tuckahoe Literacy Corps. Riverhead High School O n M o n d a y a n d Tu e s d a y Riverhead High School students are receiving training in the “hands only” CPR method during their gym classes. The training, sponsored by the Riverhead Central Faculty Association (RCFA), Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps (RVAC) and RiverheadLOCAL, will educate students on response to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and provide an introduction to the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). While it doesn’t provide a full CPR certification, the training offers participants the knowledge and skills to initiate CPR in an emergency while waiting for EMTs to arrive. “We organized this for students because you never know when sudden cardiac arrest will strike,” said RCFA Treasurer and local EMT Gregory Wallace. “The more people are trained to help, the higher the likelihood for survival.” “There are more than 900 cases of sudden cardiac arrest in Suffolk County each year,” added RVAC Training Officer Heather Bingham. “And only about a third of those patients receive bystander CPR. The goal of programs like these is to increase that number so that we can increase the survival rate for

patients. It’s as simple as that.” Although many people think of sudden cardiac arrest and a heart attack as synonymous, they are not. Heart attacks may cause muscle damage that leads to SCA, but not all SCA are caused by heart attacks. Therefore, the two are often distinguished as “the electrical” (SCA) and “the plumbing” (heart attack).

RICK’S SPACE Harry Potter And The Curse Of The Height Challenged People

We can’t resist making things more and more confusing. With the age of technology you would think the opposite – that life would be simpler. We recently got Netflix so we could watch movies. To get to Netflix, for some odd reason, we have to go through our Samsung DVD player, even though we are not watching a DVD. To do this we must convince the thing that we don’t want to watch a DVD and no, we don’t want to watch television . . . no, yes, we want to watch television, but no, not a television channel. Finally, we locate Netflix. Remember when they numbered movie sequels? Christ, those were the good old days. Godfather 2. That would be the second one, the one after the first one and before the third one, which was conveniently named Godfather 3. Karen wanted to watch the Harry Potter movies, all eight of them. Right away that’s trouble, because to find a movie on Netflix you have to type in

the name. If you wanted to watch the fifth installment you must know the name: Harry Potter And The Order Of Phoenix. All eight of the movies have similar names, and none of them are numbered. So to order the correct movie you have to remember the titles in order, which obviously is a problem if you are a burnt out hippie like . . . Karen. To make matters worse, the three main characters, Harry, Hermione, and Weasley, are all featured prominently on the covers in the same pose. I noticed a quick and effective way to differentiate the movies in chronological order, which I called The Hermione Granger Muggle Boobage Meter. On the box of the first movie Emma Watson, who plays Hermione, is a little girl. After all, the movies span 13 years, which means these kids were cast 15 years ago, so the producers had to imagine what they would look like as they grew older.

REAL ESTATE

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

They hit the nail on the head with Watson. By the third installment there are tiny bumps on her chest. By the fifth she is a bra-wearing teenager going out on dates, even making out. Now keep in mind I share my colleague Jerry Della Femina’s observation that I feel like a pedophile if I look at a woman under 50. I like women my own age (or within 30 years or so). Plus, I could never like someone named Hermione and even if I did I wouldn’t take a muggle home to mother. Rupert Grint, who plays Weasley, also grows up – and it’s not a pretty sight. He gets big and muscular, and his large nose flattens out, making him look like a pugilist (memo to editors and other dumb readers: that’s a boxer). The big problem, though, is Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry. Radcliffe was four-foot 10 inches when they cast him, and he’s four-foot 10 inches now. He’s a dwarf, umm, I mean, a height challenged individual. So although Weasley is Harry’s roommate, by the time the fifth movie rolls around he looks like Harry’s big, dumb uncle. Basically, to buy into the series we have to believe this gnome can fly around on a broomstick and hang out with old, ugly pugs while waving a wand around like a freaking princess. And to think I missed “Monday Night Football” for this. Another problem is Weasley and

IN THE NEWS

Hermione become boyfriend and girlfriend. In real life a babe like Watson would never date a guy as ugly as Grint/Weasley -- it would be like Christie Brinkley dating Billy Joel, and that could never happen, right? They had a hot guy in one movie, Robert Pattinson, but they killed him off before Hermione could properly seduce him. They had to introduce a girl smaller than Harry to be his love interest. The producers named her Luna Lovegood – that’s a great name for a porn star. We’ve only watched five movies so far. By the time we’ve seen all of them I predict Weasley will look like Shrek, Hermione’s boobs will be dragging on the ground like Courtney Love’s, and Luna Lovegood will have done Dallas or at least most of Hogwarts. Poor Harry will still be four-foot 10 inches. The rest of the cast doesn’t age at all: Alan Rickman, (Snape) Maggie Smith (McGonagall), and Gary Oldman (Sirius) all look the same. One exception is Professor Dumbledore, who is played by different actors, all of whom have long gray beards. People don’t notice — they all think he is the same guy who plays Gandalf in Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit, other movies with unnumbered prequels and sequels that star gnomes, dwarves, and women with ample boobage – not that I noticed, mind you.

EDITORIAL

Do Unto Others The news is grim indeed. The fact that the CIA has conducted unspeakable acts of torture against detainees is hardly surprising, though just how dastardly it was has been whitewashed. The argument goes that in the wake of 9-11 the United States had to stoop to the levels of the terrorists if we were to defeat them. Those who would behead a civilian don’t deserve protection outlined in the Code of Conduct formalized at the Geneva Conventions. Besides, what good does it do to treat a prisoner civilly if we are the only ones doing so? Putting that argument aside for the moment is the troubling revelation that the White House was privy to the gruesome details all along. The argument, that these torture techniques have yielded information that has helped us capture and kill terrorists – even Bin Laden – has now been debunked. President George W. Bush, when authorizing the detention center outside our borders – and outside the protections the U.S. affords suspects – initially told the CIA he did not want to know the details of the interrogations. Certainly, taking the “see no evil” approach is nothing to be proud of. A report released last week details not only the extent of the torture but the fact that Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, and other senior White House officials knew the extent of the torture but were mislead by CIA officials into thinking the program was more effective than it turned out to be. History has given us ample proof that the United States, in reality, is not the knight in shining armor our forefathers wanted it to be. We do not have the moral backbone we pretend to have, nor are we any more just or truthful than any other country. We get down in the mud with the best of them, and it matters little what came first, the chicken or the egg. Either you are in or you are out, and we jumped in those muddy waters a long time ago. It is a shameful realization. Retaliation Recent emails reveal that the present White House was on board with the IRS plan to investigate – and retaliate against - political opponents of the current administration. The earmark of a democracy is the dissension, the political give and take, between the opposing parties. When the ruling party seeks to silence, through intimidation, it threatens the entire fabric of freedom. To do so through the IRS, which has the power to ruin lives and seize property, is behavior that may well be illegal.

Dear Editor, I have previously written about the disastrous impact of “sequestration” on our armed forces. Douglas Wissing

delves into this topic in his article “RIF Tide” in the December 2014 issue of The American Legion Magazine, which I partially paraphrase in the next paragraph. After 9/11 we had 570,000 soldiers in the Army, and it may decrease to around 400,000, which will be our smallest Army since before WWII. The Marines will go from 184,000 to 175,000, and the National Guard will lose 43,000 soldiers and the Reserves 20,000. The Air Force will have about 700 fewer aircraft. Continued on Page 20.

Being former Navy enlisted and a Navy officer, I am especially concerned with the state of our Navy. We currently have 286 ships, including 11 carrier battle groups. Sequestration will keep our Navy (with new construction) at 286 ships, but decrease carrier battle groups to 10. Our Naval command estimates we need 300 ships, including 12 carrier battle groups, to effectively project our military power in the world and safeguard our security. Let’s not forget 90 percent of the world’s trade passes over the oceans. The scale back of our overseas land bases increases the need for a strong Navy, including carrier battle groups. DONALD A. We thank Gary Sapiane and David Lee for announcing on WLNG the many successful events the NCC has hosted this year. WLNG is the voice of the East End. The two beautiful Christmas trees were donated by Diane and Phil Bucking of the Sag Harbor Garden Center and Laura and John Smith of the Serene Green Farm Stand. Thank you for your generous donations. Special thanks to Scott Hewett and Chuck Neuman for putting up the trees and decorating them at the circle at Long Beach and at Trout Pond. Mike and Betty Dowling once again had quite a spread of delicious food for the Children’s Christmas Party on Saturday. Miraculously, Santa showed up again this year, surprised the children with special gifts and encouraged them to listen to their parents. Betty gave the children reindeer food as they left the party. Hopefully the deer will eat the food instead of our shrubs. California lawmakers have a ban bill in the hopper and a federal ban has also been proposed. I n 2 012 t h e P l a s t i c S o u p Foundation, whose mission is to fight plastic pollution in waterways, joined with the Dutch organization North Sea Foundation to launch the “Beat The Microbead” campaign. They’ve even created a smartphone app that allows consumers to scan barcodes to see if products contain microplastics. Two brothers, only three to four months old, need a home or foster so they don’t have to go back outside in the cold. Shy and a bit scared, but coming around. Town officials announced the receipt of a $250,000 grant award from the State of New York for the development of a Coastal Assessment and Resiliency Plan this week. “The impacts of climate change and sea-level rise lend ever-greater urgency to coastal resiliency planning,” said East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell. The grant will fund a plan that examines erosion risks, storm vulnerability and natural recovery, he explained. Comprising $250,000 from the state and a matching $250,000 from other private and public sources, the grant will be used to develop the CARP through gathering and analyzing scientific coastal data and ensuring broad public awareness and input. Town staff recently participated in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration “Climate Adaptation for Coastal Communities” training course held at Stony Brook Southampton. “This three-day intensive course, sponsored by East Hampton and Southampton towns, the Peconic Estuary Program, Concerned Citizens of Montauk, the Peconic Institute and Stony Brook University, focused on providing coastal community organizations with a climate adaptation toolkit to proactively address coastal planning priorities and, as a result of our participation, we fully expect to immediately integrate climate adaption strategies into our coastal policies, plans and programs,” said Kim Shaw, East Hampton Town’s Director of Natural Resources.

Hundreds of hardy souls came out for the 11th annual polar bear plunge to benefit Human Resources of the Hamptons last Saturday. The air was a brisk 39 degrees and the water a bracing 47 at Coopers Beach in Southampton as plungers prepped for a run into the waves. Village Mayor Mark Epley, who takes the plunge in costume each year, didn’t disappoint. His family’s Wizard of Oz ensemble won the team category of the costume contest. Sources say donations from the combined years of plunges may break the million-dollar mark this year.

Carl Johnson, the Bridgehampton coach, had a plan going into Friday’s game against archrival Pierson. He wanted forward Matthew Hostetter to shoot from outside the arc, opening the paint up for all-county candidates Josh Lamison and Charles Manning Jr. To say it worked would be an understatement. The first time Hostetter touched the ball he launched a three-pointer that found the bottom of the net. Two more followed in rapid succession as the Bees opened up a 21-8 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Bees, already playing without star wingman Elijah Jackson, lost their mercurial point guard Tylik Furman in the first half to an ankle injury, but the team barely missed a beat. Pierson tried to make a charge but Manning and Lamison, as planned, took over underneath and Hostetter kept popping to the tune of 21 points. Lamison ended up with the same, and Manning, a serious but raw talent, had 18 points and nine rebounds. When Furman went down Manning, a 6’3” junior took over at the point and ran it with aplomb, recording nine assists. Lamison grabbed 14 rebounds. Robbie Eijen had 17 for the Whalers and Ben Kushner added 10. By the way, Furman was spotted walking about without a limp the following days and the powerful Bees figured to best Smithtown Christian handily yesterday even if Furman missed the game. Pierson played Class AA Powerhouse Bayshore on December 9 and absorbed a 65-43 loss. Eijen tallied 12 for the Whalers, who hung in for the first half before unraveling in the third stanza. Southampton (1-0) is for real. Friday the Mariners dismantled Mattituck 90-68 on the loser’s court. Zach Cummings, a budding star, exploded for 26 points and added 10 boards. Isiah Johnson, Nassies Fulford, Israel Johnson, and Nitauke Williams all hit double figures for the winners. Fulford also grabbed 14 boards and dished off for five scores. Mattituck fell to 3-1 on the young season. Babylon proved too much for Hampton Bays, coming to the

Baymen’s home floor Friday and leaving with a 62-20 thumping. Westhampton, which lost two games to open the season, got into the win column Friday besting Miller Place 38-28 at home. Riverhead, playing in League III, dropped its opener to Bellport 67-59. Ethan Greenidge scored 20 for The Blue Waves. East Hampton dropped a heartbreaker to Shoreham Wading

River Friday, losing 49-47 on the road. The game, literally, was nip and tuck the entire way, tied at 28 at halftime. Each team took turns taking a slim advantage in the second half, until Danny Hughes, sent to the line with less than a second left, made free throws to ice the game. Kevin Fee had 17 and Brendan Kennedy-Gay and Kyle McKee 11 each for Bonac (1-2).

Bonac bested Rocky Point 59-54 on December 9 behind Kennedy-Gay, who went off for 23 points, and Fee, who added 14. Regis O’Neil tallied 12 points for East Hampton (1-2). Southold evened its record to 1 and 1 by beating Smithtown Christian 66-63 at home Friday. Lady Waves Coming Around

By Rick Murphy

Riverhead, competing in Suffolk’s suicidal League III, took one on the chin, getting blown out on the road December 9. Bay Shore came out smoking, opening up a 16-3 lead the locals could never recover from. The finale was 60-28; Sam Dunn (9) and Amanda Baron combined for 17 for Riverhead. The Lady Waves lost their home opener to Bellport Friday 59-52 but looked good doing so. Unfortunately for the locals, Bellport, competing in League IV, boasts the services of Arella Guirantes, Miss Long Island of basketball, who averaged 33.6 points per game last season, one of the

highest totals in the state. She had 32 against Riverhead to go along with 16 rebounds and 10 assists. The Lady Clippers (2-0) hope to ride their star to the state tournament. Baron led a balanced Riverhead attack with 12. Kate McCarney (11), Faith Johnson-DeSilvia (10) and Dunn (10) all hit double figures. Riverhead broke into the win column Monday, going on the road to beat Newfield 50-29. Dunn scored 13 and DeSilvia added 10. Southold/Greenport won at home against East Hampton Saturday 41-24. Madison Tabor proved the difference, exploding for 23 points and adding five assists. Sophia

Southampton ran into a powder keg Monday, getting crushed by Sayville at home, 72-15. Saimona Wa r d t a l l i e d 11 i n d e f e a t . Southampton is 0-4. In League VIII action Port Jefferson doubled up Shelter Island at the losers’ court, 56-28 on Friday For upcoming schedules visit NETPLAY.com

The Triangular Disaster At The Garden Some predicted a record just under .500, others thought maybe they could slip into the playoffs, and the optimists believed they could squeeze out a 4 or 5 seed in the watered-down Eastern Conference. Either way, no one saw the Knicks getting off to the worst start in franchise history at 4-19. There are three main culprits for the early season mess at the Garden: Carmelo Anthony, Phil Jackson, and James Dolan. From the start, Anthony was a bad fit for the triangle offense. The offense is predicated on spacing, passing and cutting. None of these three terms fit into the style of play that Anthony had built his career on. The reality was the Knicks were, and remain, multiple pieces away from serious playoff contention. Their “superstar” didn’t fit the new offense and was an “old” 30 years old because he already had 12 NBA

seasons in his legs. Additionally, few stars have shown any interest in playing with Anthony because of his selfish style of play. Yet, the Knicks still offered Anthony a five-year / $125 million contract. President Phil Jackson deserves some blame, because while I’m sure he knew Anthony wasn’t an ideal fit, he believed he could get Anthony to adapt and buy in. That hasn’t yet proven to be successful. Now, Anthony’s age is starting to show with a list of nagging injuries, and he is clearly beginning the backside of his career. But, Jackson was likely getting pressure from his boss, Jim Dolan, the Executive Chairman of MSG, and owner of the Knicks. It behooved Dolan to have Anthony playing for the Knicks this season. It kept a superstar in the World’s Most Famous Arena, which win or lose, was theoretically good for business (ticket sales, TV ratings,

www.indyeastend.com

etc.), at least in the short term. Also, letting Anthony leave town, would be admitting failure on the blockbuster trade that Dolan forced then-GM Donnie Walsh into in the winter of 2011. While there is no conclusive evidence that Dolan forced Jackson’s hand in a re-signing of Anthony, it would be naïve to think there wasn’t a little pressure from the boss, who had just doled out $15 million per year to Jackson. If you think there’s no way that’s possible, look back to the summer, when there were reports as early as May of disagreements between the two over staff in basketball operations. The missing link that you might believe should be to blame? First year head coach Derek Fisher. I don’t think Fisher is the problem. Through this horrendous start, Fisher has kept his cool. He has been stoic, almost to a fault, but has preached optimism and a continued emphasis on learning and improving. These are all qualities you want to see in a leader through tough times. While some media members and fans might want some public mini outbursts or rants from Fisher, it wouldn’t benefit the team in any way.

December 17, 2014

37

There seems to be a notion amongst some media and fans that Fisher would do best to stop teaching the triangle offense. I couldn’t disagree more. That would show weakness and allow the inmates to run the asylum. Fisher needs to stand firm that this is his team, and his system, and the players will adjust according, or they will be gone. Anthony denied rumors last week that he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause for the right situation. While it isn’t likely based on aforementioned reasons, if there were a team willing to take on Anthony, even if it’s just in exchange for expiring contracts, I’d trade him in a heartbeat. It is time for the Knicks to truly start from scratch; build around the draft (they actually have a first round pick next June), and find quality free agent players, either superstars, or just a tier below, who want to come to New York City, and won’t be deterred by an aging, overpaid, “me-first” player.
