NOBODY ASKED ME, BUT . . . Every Friday in The New York Post, a great sportswriter named Jimmy Cannon used to write a column that I would devour. The column consisted of his observations of the passing scene. It was called “Nobody Asked Me, But.” So, with apologies to Jimmy Cannon: Sixteen-year-old boys seem to like school a lot better than I did when I was a kid. Maybe the sexy female teacher/boy student sex thing is catching on. I’m betting Bobby Durst and his smart, expensive lawyers will beat the rap again. You can’t convict a man for what he mumbles to himself while he’s peeing. We will never have a worse Mayor than Bill de Blasio. The damage he is doing to our city in the name of his “Left Wing Occupy Wall Street” politics will cost innocent lives. Mel Torme singing “Stardust” is this old guy’s idea of what music should be. I consider it a great trip out to the Hamptons when I have my sweet little dog Shlomo sitting next to me and a great Nesbo audiobook playing. If you want to enjoy Nesbo I suggest you start with “The Snowman.” After that you’ll be hooked. Late at night when I’m about to fall asleep I sometimes think of the fantastic steamed clams in a delicious broth served at Cappelletti, the superb Italian restaurant run by Luigi and Robin Tagliasacchi on Noyac Road in Sag Harbor, and I swear, my mouth waters. All he’s going to do is screw up the chances of real candidates like Jeb Bush and Scott Walker. When are Republicans going to wake up and figure out what it takes to win a presidential race? Summer recipe: Pick up a pound of fresh raw scallops at the wonderful Seafood Shop in Wainscott. Slice them into thin slices, add the juice of one lemon, 4 ounces of great virgin olive oil, plenty of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper and leave in the refrigerator for two hours and serve. Delicious. I’m so vain that I actually find myself encouraging identity theft. In my case, I think everybody should be me. Summer showering (alone) in an outdoor shower is as over-rated as beach walking. I’m a Republican who doesn’t think Hillary would make a bad President. I wouldn’t let these two amateurs negotiate for a Persian rug. My friend David Silver, who recently passed, was one of the sweetest, nicest people I have ever met. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. I’ve only watched the HBO show “Girls” twice, but both times when the show ended I felt like I had to take a shower. Let me get this straight: The four conservatives in the Supreme Court are an evil bloc who only vote for political reasons, and the four liberals on the Supreme Court are just four wonderful fair-thinking people who just happen to agree on the same subject every time. If they hold a Nuremberg Trial for city planning, I’m all for having the guy who decided to “pave” the Long Island Expressway at exit 68 last Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. strung up. To tell the truth, when I’m driving and I see one of those idiots blabbing on a cell phone and crossing the street against the light and looking the wrong way I come close to them and hit the horn as loud and as long as I can. They jump a mile and as I pass them I smile and give them the finger. That’s the kind of nice guy I am. If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@ dfjp.com.

INDY’s LIFE SERIES Stress, Part 1
Got Stress? Indy Eyes Stress Awareness Month By Kitty Merrill
Stress. It makes you sick. It makes you nuts. It makes you look old. And, it makes you fat. April is Stress Awareness Month, so what better time for The Independent to launch a month-long series examining the effects of stress and strategies you can use to relieve it? This week we’ll discuss one of the most obvious symptoms of the effect stress has on your body . . .
Stress Makes You Fat You know the drill. The boss, the traffic, the bills, the kids, the snow -the daily grind can be an unrelenting olla podrida of annoyance. And, for many people, the first place they turn when the stress starts to build is the Ben & Jerry’s or Dunkin Donuts. It’s the American way. It’s making us, and particularly our bellies, fatter and fatter. And it’s not entirely our fault. According to J.J. Smith, New York Times bestselling author, certified nutritionist and creator of the 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse, “Stress is a contributing factor to storing belly fat. The main reason some people store fat around their mid-section is because of the stress hormone, cortisol.” When you are stressed, your neuroendocrine system activates a series of hormones including adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline decreases your appetite, but not for long. Cortisol is nicknamed the stress hormone, Smith explained. Its job is to replenish the body after the stress has passed – at least that was its original purpose back when stress was likely linked to running from a saber tooth tiger. The fight or flight response, designed to kick in during those extreme situations, packs a one/
two punch. Adrenaline provides extra strength and energy, then cortisol signals the body to replenish its dwindling stores. But – many of us don’t need to replenish those stores. Doesn’t matter. Cortisol surges trigger appetite. “Studies have shown that when cortisol is released into the bloodstream, you become less sensitive to leptin, the hormone that tells your brain you are full,” Smith explained. “When this happens, you tend to eat more and more and begin to crave sugar.”
It’s Evolution Don’t blame your weak will. When the fight or flight kicks in, evolution has trained the body to seek the fastest acting food – so you crave sugar and carbs. That leads to high level of sugar and insulin in your blood and that leads to storing fat . . . but not ordinary fat. “Fat caused by stress tends to get stored in the belly,” Smith explained. Visceral fat around the belly forms. Scientists have recently learned that fat cells have special receptors for cortisol and there are more of them in the belly than other areas of the body. It gets worse. As the adrenal glands pump cortisol, production of musclebuilding testosterone decreases, so over time, you lose muscle mass and burn fewer calories. There’s more. Grabbing something sugary at times of stress is also hard wired into our minds. Humans are conditioned to “do something” when stress kicks in, and eating is a soothing activity frequently chosen. So you get the cortisol cue, eat a donut, and establish a behavioral response. The coup de grace? Unlike our caveman ancestors who experienced stress through bursts of danger people nowadays are more likely to
experience chronic stress, meaning those cortisol levels stay high and the fight to reduce them -- and your body -- remains.
Eating Less = More Stress Don’t diet. A 2001 study of dieting women by researchers at the University of British Columbia found that those who consumed the least amount of food had the highest levels of cortisol in their urine and reported added stress when they had to confront food situations. The less they ate, the more they stressed and the more they craved food. Don’t go crazy with the exercise, either, if you’re looking to break the cycle. Working out to exhaustion also increases cortisol, which boosts hunger and carb cravings. Grab a glass of wine to soothe stress? That will make you fat, too, since booze spikes blood sugar and insulin, setting up a separate domino effect of fat storage. Go to the mattresses? A nap is not a bad idea, so long as it doesn’t interrupt your normal sleep patterns. Stress can have a killer effect on sleep. And tossing and turning with worry shows up at the waistline. Lack of sleep, especially good sleep, effects the metabolism, slowing down the rate at which you burn calories. Leptin, the hormone Smith said signals the brain you’re full, diminishes with sleep deprivation,
while ghrelin, a hormone that signals the body to eat, increases. An article published by the Harvard School of Public Health about sleep’s role in weight control highlights a Nurse’s Health Study that followed 68,000 middle aged American women for up to 16 years. Women who slept fewer than five hours per night were 15 percent more likely to become obese over the course of the study. Sometimes, it’s not what’s eating you, but what you’re eating, that is the cause of stress. The standard American diet of fast, over-processed, chemical-laden food results in a toxic overload that leads to gaining weight, Smith said. The acclaimed documentary, Supersize Me, describes the effect of a junk food diet on the body. Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock spent 30 days on the McDiet, eating only food from the fast food chain. By month’s end, the previously fit Spurlock gained almost 25 pounds. He experienced depression, headaches, heart palpitations, soaring cholesterol. The film is admittedly an exaggerated demonstration of the effect of fast food on the human body but most hefty Americans would admit to including hefty amounts of the McDiet on their weekly menu. So both mental stress and the stress of a poor diet can make you fat. What else does stress do? Next week, we explore how stress makes you sick.
What Do You Do? There are probably just as many ways to relieve stress as there are stressors. During Stress Awareness Month, Indy encourages you to share how you honor your chill. Email kmerrill@indyeastend.com with a description of your favorite stress buster, or a photo of yourself de-stressing, and your submission could be included in a series-culminating wrap up of stress busters in our April 29 edition. You might even win a prize! What kind of prize, you ask. Oh, we don’t know yet. It’s deadline day. We’re stressed. WHERE’S OUR YOGI HERBAL TEA??

Stress Buster: Detox Author and nutritionist J.J. Smith created the DEM system designed to teach people to detox, eat “clean” food and move. Her Facebook page recently surpassed 200,000 members and this spring her book, 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse, was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. D e t o x i n g t h e b o d y, particularly the liver, is essential to weight loss, overall health, and fighting the effects of stress. The GSC Facebook page is rife with members reporting incredible weight loss and increased sense of well being as toxins begin to leave their bodies and bellies shrink. Green smoothies packed with spinach, kale, spring mix, or other green leafy vegetables plus a veritable produce department worth of fruit, serve as the foundation for the cleanse, which is enhanced to include an array of healthy dishes. Smith urges participants to include daily detox methods, like sauna, body brushing, and sipping herbal teas, to help the body purge stressrelated toxins. Locally, Simply Sublime Health Food Café on Springs Fireplace Road in East Hampton offers a monthly detox menu of cleanses designed to help rid the system of toxic overload. Their Ayurvedic Elimination Cleanse uses vegan, alkaline-based food to give the body a break from caffeine, sugar, and processed foods. It’s an eating cleanse, so the stress of cooking and shopping is eliminated along with toxins. Visit Indy’s archives for a March 4, 2015 feature about the Sublime cleanse, or check the café’s website, simplysublimehamptons.com to learn about the April offerings.

Pell Grants Imperiled
Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun McKay, and SCCC students gathered last Thursday to denounce a House of Representatives plan to cap Pell Grant awards. The proposal caps the dollar amount the program will distribute as well as how much a student may receive. Pell Grants with a total value of $29,384,733. With tuition rates at SCCC at $4390 last year, Pell Grants go a long way toward making school affordable for SCCC students. Pell Grant awards have been increasing over the last five years, and with SCCC enrollment on a long upward trend, limiting Pell Grants could have a devastating effect in the future. “Pell Grants have been an invaluable tool for ambitious young men and women who may have limited means but recognize that a good education is the key to future success,” said PO Gregory. “Capping Pell Grants would hurt

some of the most vulnerable people in our society and that is simply wrong. Limiting Pell Grants is extraordinarily shortsighted. The key to economic prosperity in Suffolk County and in this country is providing the kind of quality education that leads to good-paying jobs. Capping Pell Grants is just penny wise and pound foolish.” “The Federal Pell Grant program provides need-based grants and promotes access to higher education,” said Dr. McKay. “Pell Grants provide students with the opportunity to attend college knowing they can graduate without the burden of student loans.” Unlike a traditional loan, federal Pell Grants do not have to be repaid. The amount a student can receive depends on financial need, school cost, full or part-time status, and whether the student plans to attend school for a full academic year or less. The Pell program provides need-based grants to low-income undergrads and some post-grad students in an effort to promote access to postsecondary education. Financial need is determined by the U.S Department of Education using a standard formula that takes into account the student’s income, parents’ income and assets, household size, and number of family members attending college. The grants are awarded through the institutions the student attends. The schools either credit the money to a student’s account, give the kid a check or combine the two methods. Asked to respond to the potential cap on Monday, Congressman Lee Zeldin replied via email, “The House budget actually secures the Pell Grant Program. It doesn’t harm it. I am fully committed to quality, affordable higher education for our students. I’m also committed to ensuring that upon graduating college, our students are receiving good paying jobs by growing our economy and strengthening the middle class, which is exactly what the balanced budget would do. The budget I voted for will ensure Pell Grants will continue to serve our neediest students, providing them with access to a quality education.” Ye s , s a i d M i c h a e l P i t c h e r, Director of Communications for the Presiding Officer. The proposal doesn’t tank the Pell Grant Program. It puts a hard cap on the numbers for the next 10 years. “That means,” Pitcher explained, “thousands and thousands of students on Long Island, if not hundreds of thousands, eligible under current guidelines will be shut out. The grants will continue to “serve our neediest students,” as always. They will just cover fewer and fewer with Continued on Page 29.

RICK’S SPACE The Easter Column It’s that time of year when talk at the Indy office inevitably turns to Easter, and when we think Easter, of course, the first thing that comes into our minds is Plenary Indulgences. For those of us who went to Catholic schools the big weekend would kick off on Holy Thursday – all the kids would go to church and make the Stations of the Cross. This involved walking around the 14 stations and stopping to say a rosary at each one. Each station consisted of carved marble statues depicting Christ’s journey on the fateful day
he died. After a while it became too time consuming so we came up with the idea of shorthand rosary prayers: “Hail Mary, full of Our Hollow Father who is in heaven with Art amen.” There was a prize at the end of the journey -- completing the 14 stations earned you a Plenary Indulgence, which wiped your soul clean of all sins. (“Even da impure thoughts I have about Marilyn Monroe, fadda?” “Yes, son.”) Flush with our sin-free souls, we couldn’t wait to leave church and

begin sinning again. In those days it was virtually impossible for a kid to have sex, so the worst sins available to us were stealing and lying, both of which we did in abundance. We also smoked cigarettes, which probably wasn’t a sin except for the fact we stole the cigarettes. Of course, Holy Thursday was a mere prelude to Good Friday. Good Friday is basically one big, long wake, where we mourn the crucifixion. Between noon and 3 PM is a particularly solemn time, for it represented the hours Jesus was on the cross. We weren’t allowed to have any fun whatsoever. “S**t, we ain’t even allowed to freakin’ curse,” my friend Tony once ruefully lamented. Good Friday also meant fasting, but most Catholics pretty much ignored that (except not coincidentally the poor ones) especially Italian families like mine.

It is physically impossible for an Italian to avoid eating food for any length of time. That’s why you never hear of Italians going on hunger strikes – there’s no way to avoid the provolone. Then it was back to church for another mass and more Holy Communion – and of course, yet another Plenary Indulgence, so all the impure thoughts were wiped clean anew. Saturday of Holy Week is the orphaned stepdaughter of the weekend. It doesn’t even get a name, like “Mundane Saturday” or “SemiSolemn Saturday.” You could even eat all the meat you wanted. In our house my mother decreed that in honor of what happened to Jesus we were to stay in and basically do nothing all day. That meant no smoking, but if you were any good you long ago had figured out where the Easter baskets were hidden so you could break into a bunny or two. When we told mom we were bored she suggested we color eggs: What respectable 12 year-old, cursing, smoking boy wants to do that? Easter Sunday was so important I usually had a brand new suit jacket, shirt, and tie to wear to church. After Easter it was to be used only for weddings and funerals. What usually happened though, is it went back into the closet and by the time it was pressed into use again it was too small. That meant buying another one for the following Easter. I used to think if only more of our neighbors died I’d be able to get dressed up more often. Early Sunday morning, Jesus, who was a kid at heart, realized he had gone off into his tomb two days too early — he should have waited for his Easter basket. So he arose from his crypt and Christians everywhere celebrated this miracle. And so it’s been ever since. After Easter Mass the family gathers for a feast. The kids, of course, on the verge of a diabetic coma, had already eaten so much candy that they’d have to sit at the dinner table and pretend to eat the giant roast pork mom prepared. Plus, flush with a brand new Plenary Indulgence, we were anxious to get out there and sin again. The best part of a Plenar y Indulgence is you get one when you get the “Last Rites.” That’s why you always see them call for a priest when someone is mortally wounded. But be forewarned, those of you with little faith who think they can cheat the devil with a last minute Indulgence. Pretend your soul is a piece of clapboard, and each sin is a nail in it. You can remove the nail but the holes remain. This, by the way, is the origin of the word “Holy.”

EDITORIAL Mobile Home Parks
The most affordable home on the market is typically a mobile home. There are thousands of mobile home communities all over the country. Some are 55 and over, reserved for seniors, and often subsidized by government programs. They are typically affordable – THE most affordable path to home ownership. They are an effective solution for low-income housing, though officials here on the East End stubbornly refuse to embrace the concept that a local municipality could sharply reduce its housing needs by sponsoring and maintaining a mobile home park. But there are troubling developments hereabouts. In the Riverhead area, three mobile home parks that were privately owned were recently sold – and residents say the mindset of the new owners is to make the parks unlivable, push the senior citizens out, and rent the units on the open market. At the East Hampton Mobile Home Park, residents have been complaining for a decade or more – maintenance is nonexistent, the roads are filled with dangerous potholes, tree limbs drape power lines, and the cesspool system is antiquated and overtaxed. All of these parks have one thing in common: rents keep going up. Though mobile home owners own their units, they are charged each month for the sliver of land they rest on. In East Hampton, rents have soared over $900-a hefty price, especially for those on fixed incomes. Gradually, long time locals and seniors are being forced out and replaced by a different element. In Wading River mobile owners complained for months about drug dealers who had taken residence there until police finally responded. Some politicians have tried to intervene, Fred Thiele, Ken LaValle, and Dominic Stanzione among them. It seems most attempts at meaningful reform are inevitably stymied. Many of the mobile parks are owned by national companies that are large political contributors; their nationwide clout may make it difficult to address problems, even on a local level. It is almost comical to hear local officials constantly preaching about the need for affordable housing while they continue to ignore the problems that exist at the affordable housing under their jurisdiction. A state of the art, energy efficient, “Green” solar heated, mobile home costs as little as $50,000. We would think those people paying a small fortune for a studio apartment in an attic or basement would love the chance to own one. And we would think those in power would do something to assure the mobile parks we do have locally don’t turn into crime-ridden slums.

It’s Time
Dear Editor, It’s time for the people in Southampton School District to throw their hat in the ring. Currently there are two seats up for reelection on the Southampton BOE. Both Roberta Hunter and Don King are running for reelection. Ms. Hunter has served on the BOE for five years and has previous been on the BOE, but not consecutive terms. Ms. Hunter was the only board member to vote in favor of the Extended Learning Time Grant. This grant would have mandated children as young as five years old to be in school for almost nine hours per day. Even after she

heard parents voice their opposition to the ELT Grant first hand, she still voted in favor of it. Don King is in his tenth year of being on the BOE. If he wins this reelection he will serve on the BOE for 14 years. This is longer then any student will be in the district. Mr. King seems more interested in how much money is being spent of cell phones or what fuel is being used to heat the buildings than on the curriculum. Just last week Mr. King who was leading the BOE meeting, encouraged parents and student to leave the meeting before the regular BOE business started. Shouldn’t a board member encourage students and parents to listen and learn about what is going on in the district? Neither candidate has spoken out against Common Core, field testing, all Continued on Page 16.

Ellen Heller It was so exciting. I was following the game on Facebook. Lots of people were updating the scores in real-time. My kids went to Pierson in Sag Harbor years ago and their team played the Bees. And they all played baseball together and other sports too. A great win for the Bees! Ted Weitz When I heard that they won I thought it was very exciting. I was aware of their long string of victories so this was wonderful news. I’m not a big follower of basketball but I was always aware of passing the sign on the highway that says, “Home of the Killer Bees.” Charles Myrick I’m not a big basketball fan but I’m from Southampton so I know about The Killer Bees. I heard about their winning on the television. I think it was News 12. Very exciting. They earned it! They’re a great team. Congratulations to them.

the waste in the budget, or the lack of information that’s getting to parents. The BOE voted last week to extend the superintendent’s contract. The information on this vote was buried in the school’s website with only 24 hr notice. This is pertinent information that the BOE should make sure gets to parents. Last week there was an education forum on the East End and not a single Southampton BOE member made the effort to attend. So u t h a m p to n n e e d s n ew B O E members. Museum Focus: Wampum By Kitty Merrill
The word “Wampum” comes from the Narragansett word for white shell beads. According to the website NativeTech, which is devoted to Native American technology and art, shell beads have long had cultural significance to the Native Americans of southern New England. This month, Southampton’s Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum invites all to celebrate
the power of Wampum with a series of lectures at the museum beginning on April 12. For three successive Sundays, from 2 to 4 PM, Native American cultural experts and scholars will discuss the importance of Wampum. The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts and Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs will sponsor the free series. As a coastal community, the Shinnecock people were well known

for their whaling, fishing, and Wampum production. Wampum was fabricated by the millions and traded to Iroquois Nations and other northeastern native peoples such as the Mohegan-Pequot and Wampanoag. Earliest shell beads -- some found in the Northeast were gauged to be 4500 years old -- were traded during ceremonies, honoring the connections of shells with water and its life-giving properties, NativeTech reports. Belts that were created using Wa m p u m b e a d s d e l i n e a t e d pictographic designs that had

political and spiritual significance and were used by many Eastern Woodlands tribes to solidify treaties, political agreements, and spiritual ceremonies, a release from the museum announcing the lecture series explains. The colors used in the belts could also have significance, according to NativeTech. White Wampum is an emblem of health, peace, or purity, while a Wampum belt painted red could be a summons to war. The manufacturing of Wampum and the origination of the whaling industry fueled the New England colonies before the discovery of petroleum. For a time, Wampum was used as a medium of exchange by the Europeans to trade for great quantities of furs, which later became very important in the fur trade. “European traders and politicians, using beads and trinkets, often exploited gift exchange to gain Native American favor or territory,” according to an article on NativeTech. “With the scarcity of metal coins in New England, Wampum quickly evolved into a formal currency after European/Native contact, its production greatly facilitated by slender European metal drill bits. Wampum was mass-produced in coastal southern New England.” The history and the relevance of Wampum today will be the focus of each presentation in the lecture series. On April 12 Shinnecock tribal member and culture bearer Roddy Smith will discuss the Shinnecock relationship to the water and its preservation. Loren Spears, Executive Director of the Tomaquag Indian Memorial Museum in Rhode Island and member of the Rhode Island State Council of the Arts, will give a presentation entitled “Wampum, Telling Our Stories - Histor y, Culture, Arts, Misconceptions, and the Traditional.” Spears will also talk about the contemporary process of making Wampum. Wampum maker and Shinnecock tribal member Shane Weeks will discuss the ancient and modern practice of Wampum manufacturing and the connections to the Owasco people of the Mohawk Valley on April 19. He will talk about the importance of Wampum to the Iroquois Confederacy, and discuss the Great Law of Peace and its impact on Benjamin Franklin as seen even today in the United States Constitution. He’ll conclude by highlighting the cultural movement that is bringing awareness to Wampum’s relevance through the Two Row Wampum 1613-2013 Hudson River journey. Mobile Home Owners Fighting Back nearly impossible to abide by. “They are attempting to gain possession” of the trailers to rent or sell off, one blogger wrote. A clause in the new lease stipulated a unit must be sold or occupied full time within 30 days of being vacated. The Boulder Law Shop challenged the clause, because if a resident died and a family member was not available to move in, the unit could be taken over by Kingsley because subletting was not allowed. Another clause made residents responsible for routine maintenance – it turned out to be untenable because so many large, decaying or dead trees were on the site that residents couldn’t afford to deal with them.
Tenants in one mobile home in the community dumped human waste outside through a hose.
“Kingsley is a great company,” Sorensen said. “The perception of a few is not accurate. We’re in this for the long haul and we’ve been doing this for 40 to 50 years. We want satisfied customers.”

Mobile Homes Park residents in the Riverhead area are charging that under new ownership their quality of life has plummeted and that there is a deliberate effort to drive them out of the parks. Kingsley Management Corporation, a Utah based conglomerate, brought the three parks from the MacLeod family in December 2011 for a reported $23 million. MacLeod’s Riverleigh Avenue Park in Riverside, Riverhaven Park on Hubbard Avenue in Riverhead and Lakewood Park on River Road in Calverton all changed hands. Doug Rosenbrock, who lived at Lakewood at the time, said the quality of life at the park “deteriorated rapidly” as soon as Kingsley took over. “It was stunning how quickly they trashed the properties,” he said. “They turned a blind eye to illegal subletting.” Rosenbrock said although all three parks are limited to 55 and older residents, Kingsley has a history of taking over mobile units and then renting to younger residents. “Once we had five or six unrelated drug dealers. They were making 30 transactions a day.” He said residents met with Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter who initially took no action. After a volley of gun fire one night Rosenbrock left the facility. He eventually paid $25,000 to saw his mobile home in half and transport it to another location. “Most residents can’t afford to do that,” he said. It all came to a head at a raucous town board meeting last August. Walter said the town vigorously enforced the law at the park, and that police had been a constant presence there. But other board members complained that Walter had kept them in the dark about the problem. Norman Sorensen, an account m a n a g e r f o r K i n g s l e y, s a i d Rosenbrock and some of the other more vocal critics are off base. “They are using half truths and out and out lies and they know it,” he said. The situation hit bottom when an elderly resident moved to a nursing home and her in laws moved in. “They were drug addicts,” Rosenbrock said. Next door, George Bakke began noticing a foul odor. Human waste was being dumped in the yard between the two mobile homes through a hose. Bakke filed complaints to no avail. “We take action,” Sorensen
countered. “We had to go through the legal process. We went as fast as the system would allow and we had a conviction.” Rosenbrock has devoted a considerable amount of time to researching Kingsley and its ties to the Galland family. The Gallands have strong ties to the Mormon Church, Rosenbrock said. “These sons-of-bitches are doing this all over.” One highly publicized case occurred in Lafayette, Colorado when a group of park owners went public with their gripes against Kingsley. They charged their mobile home park leases were substantially changed, with clauses that were

Johnson Reflects On An Amazing Season By Rick Murphy
Independent / SHUFSD
It’s almost over. After winning t h e N e w Yo r k S t a t e C l a s s D Championship last week Carl Johnson, coach of the Killer Bees, has remained on call. There was the ceremony at Southampton Town Hall. There was dinner for the team at Sabrosa in Water Mill courtesy of the owner. There was a trip up island with star guard Charles Manning Jr. for a photo shoot – he’ll be officially named to the All Long Island All-Star team this week. Slam magazine is coming out to do a story. After that Johnson will have time to reflect on the amazing season – and begin preparing for a repeat. “This group is so together . . . I remember they went undefeated in PAL ball when they were in the third grade and I remember thinking it would be great if they stayed together.”
Johnson is considered a brilliant tactician and he proved his mettle in the State Final Four tournament, calling for a 1-3-1 trapping defense to defeat undefeated Moriah in the semifinals and then eschewing the press altogether against New York Mills, the defending champs, in the final. Mike Adey has coached Mills for the better part of three decades. “I knew he’d be ready for the press. We tried it twice and they scored easily both times. He knew the right way to attack it,” Johnson said. Instead, Johnson played Adey’s game, confident his team would make the clutch shots when they needed them. He called for a seldom used offense called Five Out, where each player rotated to the center of the paint. “It kind of confuses their players and it set up a pick and roll situation for Manning,” said

Johnson. Against Moriah, the zone press proved lethal as the Killer Bees stole the ball over and over in a frenzy of activity. “They are like sharks, blurs in the water. They smell the blood,” he said. The pressure is on for next season – the Bees are expected to soar to another title. “There are always the rivalries, like Pierson. They’ll play us tough. And I’m trying to beef up our non-league schedule.” As for his young all-star, Manning stamped his ticket to a big time college by winning the Final Four MVP Award. Stony Brook wants him bad — he’s their first priority. He’s been up there to see the facility. There is no doubt Manning will handle the academic load, Johnson said. “He’s a smart kid. He’s a
competitive kid but he doesn’t lose sleep over it. I’ll tell you this though – no one is going to beat him twice.”
Pell Grants

Given college costs continue to rise, Pitcher said, “Think of how many more kids would be cut off. This isn’t saving the program, it’s eviscerating it.” “It’s going to have a substantial impact,” he continued, reporting that at the press conference last week every one of the students present said, “If it wasn’t for Pell grants, I wouldn’t go to school.”

Mattituck Looks To Repeat By Rick Murphy
The snow-covered fields may belie the fact, but there is no getting around it: baseball season is upon us. Local teams have had to practice where and when they can, mostly inside school gyms. Invariably, though, temperatures will rise and the action will heat up. Expectations are high in M a t t i t u c k . T h e Tu c k e r s , t h e defending Suffolk County champs, will be hard pressed to better last
season’s mark of 21-4 but Steve DeCaro’s charges always seem to find a way. Veteran Joe Tardif (CF) and fellow senior Marcos Perivolaris (SS) lead the way. Mattituck, competing in League VIII, expects to be pressured by Center Moriches. The Red Devils return much of the core of last year’s 14-8 squad. Babylon returns ace Zach Carmody and should improve on last year’s 8-10 mark. Hampton Bays (10-10) has a young team but a core of returning
starters. Southampton’s Garret Pike, a senior, leads a talented pitching staff that includes Chad Pike, a sophomore. Older brother Chris Pike now plays professionally in the Tampa Bays organization. gets Jimmy Seviour back, and the youngster has the stuff to be one of the top pitchers in the league. The team to watch, though, is Southold. The Settlers disappointed last season, finishing 11-4, but return Alex Poliwada, who not only fills the number one starter role but also wields a potent bat in the middle of the lineup. Pat McFarland also pitches and is an on-base machine with the bat. Westhampton Beach, which made the playoffs last season, is looking to improve on last season’s 12-11 mark. The Hurricanes, competing in League VI, return a strong core including the starting rotation of Jake Bramwell, Zach Downs, and Nick Arpino. Danny McEvoy will be among the county’s hitting leaders. Harborfields figures to be the main competition. Riverhead, in League IV, had a disappointing 7-13 season in 2014 but a sold core of veterans could mean a turnaround for The Wave. Kenny Simco leads a talented pitching staff. East Hampton, in League VII, had to fight through adversity of late. Kyle Mckee (P) and Patrick Silich (C) form a strong battery and several starters return including Max Lerner. Bonac figures to improve markedly.
