NOBODY ASKED ME, BUT... Every Friday in The New York Post, a great sportswriter named Jimmy Cannon used to write a column that I would devour. The column consisted of his observations of the passing scene. It was called “Nobody Asked Me, But.” So, with apologies to Jimmy Cannon: Nobody asked me, but . . . Tell me this isn’t the fastest spring/ summer in your life. I admit I’m a downer and I start my end of summer countdown when the Kentucky Derby is over. But for crying out loud, Memorial Day shot by like a flash. Next week is the Fourth of July. In a few minutes the stores will begin their back-to-school ads. And don’t tell me that September is the best month of the year in The Hamptons. September is to winter what May is to summer. September is f*ing September. It’s when you have to go back to school. ******************************************* What follows is a joke that made me laugh. The truth is it is not a politically correct joke. But then again, I’m not a politically correct guy. If you are politically correct, stop reading this column now. In

fact, if you’re politically correct, what the hell are you doing reading this column any time? Go fret and wring your hands someplace else. And now the joke: ITALIAN VIRGINITY TEST Mario is planning to marry and asks his family doctor how he could tell if his bride-to-be is still a virgin. His doctor says, “Mario, all the Italian men I know use three things for what we call a ‘Do It Yourself Virginity Test Kit’: a small can of red paint, a small can of blue paint, and a shovel.” Mario asks, “And what do I do with these things, doc?” The doctor replies, “Before you climb into bed on your wedding night, you paint one of your balls red and the other ball blue. If she says, ‘That’s the strangest pair of balls I’ve ever seen,’ ... you hit her with the shovel!” ******************************************* Want to taste mozzarella the way it tastes in Naples, Italy, the world capital of mozzarella making? making the best creamy, delicious mozzarella in the United States. Check that – he’s even better than the guys in Naples. Pasquale is a mozzarella magician. all-kale and nothing but kale diet for the rest of their lives. And have you heard? It turns out fat may be good for you. If you’re in the Hamptons, go to Cromer’s in Noyac, the best place for meat in The Hamptons. Ask for Ray and ask him to chop you some delicious, fat-filled hamburger meat. Then enjoy the most delicious, juicy, tasty hamburgers you’ve had in years.

******************************************* I think that not mentioning the Scali, McCabe, Sloves advertising agency and the great Ed McCabe in the O.J. series on Channel 7 and ESPN when they were showing McCabe’s great work for Hertz is a crime. OK, not as big a crime as cutting someone’s head off, but a crime nevertheless.

Want to do a nice thing? Call BookHampton at 631-324-4939 order The Closers and they will have it for you in a day or two. Then you’ll have the satisfaction of reading a good book while supporting a great local bookstore. ******************************************* Make yourself a great hamburger on the Fourth of July. To begin with, don’t use that 80% lean crap that they sell at the supermarket. Lean, dry hamburgers are yet another thing that we can blame on those politically correct fools who want to tell you what to eat and how to eat. May their doctors put them on an

She is not a Native American, as she fraudulently claimed in the past to get herself a sweet “diversity” college job at Harvard. She will make Obama look like a conservative if she gets into the White House. The idea that Warren can be a heartbeat from the presidency terrifies me. I can’t be having a heart attack every time President Hillary coughs that cough that she cannot seem to stop. ******************************************* Blame it on Rio. I know there is a certain amount of bribery involved in selecting an Olympics host country. But don’t the bribe-takers have any conscience? Rio? Are they kidding? Rio?? My favorite headline last week was CNN reporting that a gold medal winner had been mugged in Rio. Actually, the whole world will soon be mugged in Rio. Let’s hear it for the Zika mosquito, sure to be the biggest winner in Rio. ******************************************* We need a new holiday. Call it DID Day. Close schools . . . close businesses . . . give everyone a three-day holiday. What is DID Day? It stands for Dead Idiot Day. A day where we honor all these idiots who will die because they cross streets with their cell phones on their ears and pay no attention to traffic. These are people whose last sight on earth will be the screens on their iPhones. People whose last words will be “I just saw a killer pair of shoes,” or, “Did you see that play in the game last night?” To these people, these are important thoughts that must be said immediately – thoughts that can’t wait until they get to the safety of a sidewalk. So they will die. The least we can do is honor those dead idiots with a holiday for all of us to enjoy. ******************************************* Finally, NOBODY ASKED ME, BUT . . . HAVE A GREAT JULY 4TH HOLIDAY. STAY SAFE. If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@ dfjp.com.

July Fourth: Fireworks & Freedom By Laura Field

This year, America will celebrate its 240th year of independence. Fourth of July is, and will continue to be, a reminder of those who fought for a free nation. We celebrate them this year and every year to come. Here on the East End, July Fourth is the apex of summer. It’s a time for barbecues, parties, parades, fireworks, cookouts, festivals, and celebrating all things summer. It’s our busy season, with locals and visitors alike enjoying (and working) unique businesses on both the North and South Forks. In essence, it’s what we wait for all year. This year, there are dozens of activities celebrating the Fourth. Here’s a roundup of what’s happening to celebrate America’s birthday. • From Wednesday through Sunday the North Sea Fire Department will host its 71st annual Firemen’s Carnival and fireworks. On Friday, in honor of the Fourth, there’ll be fireworks around 10 PM. Located at North Sea Firemen’s Field, 149 Noyac Road in Southampton. • Grucci, the staple family that offers gorgeous firework displays every year, internationally for decades, will put on what’s sure to be a fabulous show in Southampton this Friday. The Southampton Fresh Air Home’s 29th Annual American Picnic is scheduled at 1030 Meadow Lane starting at 7 PM. Festivities will include games for kids of all ages. Enjoy a picnic as well as food carts with popcorn, ice cream, hot dogs and other delights. • Greenport Fire Department will host its annual 4th of July carnival and fireworks at the Polo Grounds on Moores Lane. The event will take place from Thursday through July 4, and will start at 6 PM. • Devon Yacht Club in Amagansett plays host to fireworks on Saturday at 9:15 PM. The yacht club is private, but fireworks will be visible from elsewhere in the hamlet. • There’ll be fireworks at the Riverhead Raceway on Saturday at 9 PM. Located at 1797 Old Country Road in Riverhead. Call 631-8427223 for more info. • Don’t miss the Amagansett Fine Arts Festival. It begins at the American Legion on Montauk Highway. Don’t miss the celebration of independent artists, set to feature fine art paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, jewelry and nonfunctional crafts. Friday 4 PM to 7 PM, Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday 10 AM to 5 PM. • The Sag Harbor Yacht Club will

have fireworks on July 2 at 9:15 PM. For the best views, camp out on marine park in Sag Harbor. • On July 2 the Orient Yacht Club will have fireworks at 9:15 PM. • The Riverhead Business Improvement District is sponsoring fireworks on July 3 on the Peconic Riverfront in downtown Riverhead. Guest will also enjoy live music, face painting, jugglers, stilt walkers and balloon artist. Fireworks are at 9:15 and the event will continue until 9:45. • In Southampton, all are welcome to the largest Fourth of July parade on all of Long Island on Monday. It begins at Railroad Plaza, continuing down North Main Street, CONTINUED ON PAGE 26.

You Jelly? By Carrie Catherine Holmes

Locals and tourists alike on the East End love a day at the beach, but many would be surprised by what lurks beneath the picturesque waves. Every beachgoer knows the risk of the more common dangers heard in the news -- rip currents or sharks being the first to come to mind -- but few think of jellyfish before running into the beloved waters. Moon jellyfish are some of the most common to be seen in these waters, translucent white and named for the crescent shapes found on the bell. They have a mild sting. The non-stinging comb jelly has been seen, as well as the Portuguese Man-of-War, whose sting immediately causes great pain. More dangerous still is the largest known jellyfish in the world, the Lion’s Mane Jellyfish. Known to reach a width of six feet and length of 49 feet, it has the potential to kill humans. There is little risk to humans,

as jellyfish are not aggressive, with stings coming after a swimmer runs into them, or they are pushed by the current. Jellyfish stings can be mild or, with the larger and more dangerous species, deadly. The effects of a sting can range from stinging pain and itching rashes to raised welts or hives. If a sting is severe enough, the progressive symptoms can cause nausea, intestinal distress, abdominal pain, swelling of the lymph nodes, dizziness or fainting, nerve numbness and tingling, and muscle spasms. Rarely if someone is exposed to an excessive amount of venom, usually when caught in a school or tangled in one of the more dangerous variety’s tentacles, symptoms may progress to the point of respiratory and cardiac distress that could lead to coma or death. If you are stung, immediately rinse the area with seawater to remove any clinging jellyfish barbs, which inject the venom into skin, to prevent the sting from worsening. It

The Sands Of Time By Kitty Merrill

Beach nourishment at Meschutt in Hampton Bays and the controversial, temporary, project in Downtown Montauk are just two of the strategies government has undertaken to protect the shoreline and stave off the ocean and the bay’s inexorable hands. They may be similar when it comes to the main medium – sand. But when it comes to how long the local shoreline protection projects will take, that’s a seahorse of a different color In Montauk, the project is considered a mere Band Aid by many, an interim measure that will (hopefully) keep shoreline

businesses afloat – not literally – until a massive Army Corps of Engineers sand nourishment project promised by the feds as a part of the Fire Island to Montauk Point (FIMP) project . . . for decades . . . can commence. Last Thursday, Senator Charles E. Schumer urged the Army Corps to release the draft report and immediately thereafter hold public community forums regarding their plans for the FIMP. Schumer pushed for and secured full federal funding for this muchneeded resiliency project. Initially, the Sandy relief bill that was signed into law required only that the feds pick up 65 percent of the project, leaving the balance of the cost to

local municipalities. Immediately after the bill’s passage, Schumer began working with the Army

Wave action scoured the shoreline in front of the Beach Hut at Meschutt Beach in Hampton Bays. County officials began and will finish phase one of a renourishment project this week. Meanwhile the feds and their FIMP continue to move at glacial speed.

Corps and Office of Management and Budget to lay out a strategic pathway so that the project could be considered as “ongoing construction,” and therefore eligible for full federal funding. “Long Islanders, some of whom are still feeling the devastating impact of Superstorm Sandy, are tired of waiting on the Army Corps to share essential details on the FIMP resiliency project being planned in their community,” said Schumer. “The Army Corps should release the draft plan and engage with the community ASAP. Public meetings will allow residents to voice their concerns, improve the plan, and ask important questions that affect their future.” The project, which will protect many homeowners and residents, as well as oceanfront businesses in Montauk likely wouldn’t have happened, as the cost to local governments would be too great without federal funding. Taxpayers have already questioned the estimated co-pay for maintaining the current shoreline stabilization project along the beach in downtown Montauk. Locals are on the hook for the cost of keeping the geotubes installed there this spring covered with sand. The feds have promised FIMP will include plans for a massive shoreline rebuild that runs from Downtown Montauk all the way out to Ditch Plains. Despite the bill being passed into law over two years ago, the Army Corps of Engineers has not yet released details about the future coastline protection project nor have they held any public meetings. There’s No Place Like Home Sweet Home By Laura Field

Tucked away just off the East Hampton village green is a historical gem sure to take you back to the eighteen century. Filled with memorabilia from the colonial era, the Home Sweet Home Museum, found adjacent to Mulford Farm and the Pantigo windmill, is the most notable salt-box house in all of East Hampton. Thought falsely to be the birthplace and childhood home of American actor and playwright John Howard Payne, it gained the public’s notice. “They were fascinated by it,” local historian, tour guide, and curator Hugh King said. Payne penned the song, “Home Sweet Home.” Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Buek purchased the house in 1907 to transform it into a memorial for Payne. They also purchased the Pantigo mill and moved it to its current location. Known as a collector’s house, the Home Sweet Home Museum does not reflect a typical home in the 1900’s, but rather was a showcase of writings, photographs, and statues

of Payne. After the death of Mr. Buek in 1928, his wife sold the house and all of its belongings to the village and it has been a museum ever since. From original slanted wood floors to pristine paneling, the Home Sweet Home Museum’s caretakers kept everything true to its colonial roots. King used old photographs, newspapers, and registries to recreate the exact look that the house would have had in the twentieth century when the Bueks lived there. The gardens are the finishing touch to the historic property. Inspired by styles from medieval times to the nineteenth century, the gardens are completely authentic to the time period. From herb gardens to pleasure gardens, the grounds are a historical botanist’s dream come true. Visit now, while the scent of lavender perfumes the air. The Home Sweet Home Museum is open daily through September 10 AM to 4 PM, and Sundays 2 PM to 4PM. It is located on 14 James Lane in East Hampton. For more information call 631-324-0713.

Shop Fresh At Local Farmers Markets By Laura Field

Who doesn’t love fresh, organic produce grown locally? Summer is the perfect time to load up on all of your favorite farm-grown goodies at area farmers markets. Here is a taste of what this week’s farmer’s markets schedule looks like. On Thursdays, Montauk hosts a farmers market on the Village Green downtown. It will be open from 9 AM to 2 PM, and be sure to get there early to get your farm and sea items. East Hampton will have its farmers market on Fridays at 136 North Main Street in the Nick & Toni’s parking lot. The market boasts 23 local farmers proving everything from produce, meat, flowers, bread and honey. Stop by from 9 AM to 1 PM. Also on Fridays, Hayground School on Mitchell Lane in Bridgehampton hosts a farmers market from 3 to 6:30 PM. In Mattituck, there’s a market on Love Lane from 3 to 6 PM on Fridays. This weekend the Flanders Farm Fresh Market opens for the summer at the David Crohan Community Center on Flanders Road and runs each Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM. This market was conceived by Southampton town officials as a youth-run community market offering fresh produce to an underserved neighborhood. On Saturdays, Havens Farmers Market on Shelter Island will be located at 16 South Ferry Rd showcasing the best products that the locals have to offer. The Springs

Or, travel to Riverhead’s scenic Peconic River waterfront for its Saturday market running from 11 AM to 2 PM on Saturdays. The Westhampton Beach Farmers Market is on Saturday from 9 AM to 2 PM with over 40 vendors, music, and activities at the village municipal parking lot. Last but not least for Saturday shoppers, the Hampton Bays

Even though it’s a wonderful place to visit, it left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. How do we want Montauk and the people of Montauk to be portrayed? We need to stop this show from happening.” According to additional posts The Dock and Duryea’s were both approached as location sites and declined. So did the catamaran Mon Tiki, Swallow East, and Gurney’s. On Saturday Laraine Creegan of the Montauk Chamber of Commerce said the chamber is “not recommending any business to agree to Bravo’s request. What they’re trying to do is not what Montauk is all about. We hope the Town of East Hampton can intervene and stop this ASAP.”

By Kitty Merrill

Community members were agog and mighty unhappy with the news that the cable network Bravo plans to film a reality series in Montauk. Last week Page Six reported the new show, “Summer House,” was set to start filming. The network described the show as follows: “For years this group of friends has spent their weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day in one of the most exclusive beach areas on the East Coast. These professionals may keep it together during the week, but as soon as they hit the beach on the weekend, they let loose in a big, aspirational way that is exclusive to this high-end lifestyle.” Ugh. “Even the description is sickening,” said one poster on Facebook. Local activist and photographer James Katsipis sounded the clarion call on Facebook last Thursday, posting, “I urge all businesses to

How Does Your

GARDEN By Shelly Tashman

THE INDEPENDENT • Traveler Watchman

GROW?

Show Time!

Late June. The garden, already a delight, is bulging with growing excitement. It’s show time known as July. Color everywhere. This is it, gardeners, the main event. I can’t wait to get up in the morning to see what’s up. So many plants happening and the poignancy of a perennial garden is magnified by its fleeting nature. For me, the hydrangeas and the hostas do it. Lush foliage and you can watch the blossoms grow and explode. The need to weed is real. Get behind now and it’s harder ahead. Rose bushes need pruning back. The plant gets leggy and produces fewer roses. This is my last best chance to thin out the garden to make it more orderly. July means abundance. I appreciate order, but I love the chaos

of July. Bob Strubel at Bayberry told me about Skip Laurel, which is a cherry. Plant it in really shady areas that need blockage. Bob says the Laurel is likely to do the job in less light than one would think. It has a less than desirable flower. Cut the insignificant flower off ASAP so the plant has more energy. It will fill out in the shade. I am trying it for the last big gap in my garden. I’ll let you know. Staking. The garden is going ballistic. Right now is the time to stake everything that needs it. Think big winds and hard rain. Bee balm, daisies, especially Shasta, lithrum, etc. Hydrangeas will soon sag from blossoms so use heavy twine or rope to support the big branches if you can. They will be much more sightly.

The garden will need more upkeep now. Weeds keep being weeds, much more deadheading with the day lilies and many more plant blooms in play, so get the staking in and keep weeding. If not, shortly you will be playing catch-up. Time to feed the garden. I don’t do a lot of amending during summer. Plants grow well around here and there are other activities that are also fun. That said, I still feed the annuals and roses. I save my coffee grinds and banana peels and throw them around the bottom of roses and whatever plants are about to bloom. I figure a little extra energy is a good thing The dog days are just ahead. Increase watering time for July. If you have plants that are not really healthy looking, beware disease. Remove diseased or discolored leaves ASAP and don’t leave them on the ground. Grasses are beautiful complements to flowering plants and then go out in the fall with a flourish. Some grasses don’t play well with others. They spread and act like weeds. Put in well-behaving varieties. Ask at the nursery for the best species. Hostas. Right now is prime time for hostas. The shoots are rising and flowering in many forms. In a few weeks, after the blooms die down, I cut the bottom leaves to avoid the look of sagging. I’m not ready for the hint of dwindling summer in July.

IN THE NEWS

Bee Balm. Pretty upright stalks blooming into red flowers that are great looking in bunches. Attracts humming birds and butterflies. They multiply, but do not spread and are easy to move early (do it in June). The shoots can be divided and relocated in July but they are tall and delicate, breaking easily. Still they can be moved with care to a spot where you need color. Day Lilies. Ever y morning deadhead and every few days cut out or simply pull out yellowing foliage. Roses should be pruned back by now and heading into another blossoming. Keep pruning to get more flowers. Be brave about pruning for good looking plants. It’s not easy to maintain their lushness, so keep downsizing the plant. Montauk daisies. Cut them by 1/3to 1/2 to avoid legginess ( if that’s a word ). Slash them now for denser and shorter bunches in September. Shasta daisies. They need staking and deadheading soon. If the flowers go to seed (stay on the stem ) the daisies then become a whole lot of daisies. You can always thin them out but it’s hard to throw away plants. If they are left on their own, they will push out other plants. New trick I am trying this year. Disbudding! Before buds open, remove all but 1-2 flowers on a stem. This gives greater energy to other blossoms making them larger or so the theory goes. No matter what, pause, and look around often.

Tuckahoe Road Closure:

Hasta La Vista, Baby!

By Rick Murphy

Cruising south on Tuckahoe Road the breathtaking site of one of the world’s most picturesque golf courses unfolds. At one point almost every one of the 18 holes comes into view with glistening bays to the north forming the backdrop. Around a turn, the massive clubhouse designed by Stanford White, which is listed on the Historic Register, sits on a hill

overlooking it all like benevolent king surveying his realm. On a clear day Shinnecock Bay to the south and the Peconics to the north are clearly visible. In the distance, golfers stand atop dunes silhouetted by the sun. It’s about as good as it gets for an afternoon drive. And it all may soon disappear -except for the millionaires who are members of the swanky golf club.

Hamptons Septic Services 631-267-7515 www.HamptonsSepticService.com

If the members have their way, Tuckahoe Road will be re-routed away from the course it currently bisects. Traffic - and the public – will be rerouted to a more mundane egress, circumventing the course entirely. Last week the club sent a powerful ambassador to discuss the matter with newly minted Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman -- the billionaire former NYC Mayor

Mike Bloomberg, who is a member at Shinnecock. He came with an enticing concession – the club agreed to foot the entire bill for the project, estimated to cost about $5 million. The proposal, which will be presented in more detail shortly, w o ul d re ro ut e a po rt i o n o f Tuckahoe Road away from the golf course and into St. Andrews Road. CONTINUED ON B-3.

DWI Task Force Nets Four The East End DWI Task Force set up shop at several locales in and around Riverhead Saturday night and arrested four drivers suspected of drinking excessively and driving. They included Jonathan Trent of Riverhead, 26, who was hit with a Leandra’s Law felony for having a child in the vehicle, in this case a one-year old. A second task force operation in Southampton Town netted three others arrested on DWI charges. Pedestrian Struck By Train A man lying on the railroad tracks in Riverhead on June 21 was run over. Riverhead Town Police said the engineer of a westbound train out of Greenport spotted a man later identified as John Nullmeyer, 49, on the tracks shortly before 10 PM. The train couldn’t stop in time and Nullmeyer was severely injured. One leg had to be partially amputated at Stony Brook Hospital after the accident and the other was injured as well.

“possible” Gregor might have to OK the project and that he realized Gregor “might be opposed.”

“I’m willing to have the conversation,” Schneiderman said. It was his idea to ask the club to pay for the project and he will ask for the concessions as talks progress. ”I’m aware people are concerned about losing the vistas. But the club could just plant trees if it wanted.”

Pledged $1 Million A Bloomberg-controlled charity in 2014 pledged $1 million in funding for a Clean Water Technology Center championed by Anna Throne-Holst, the Southampton town supervisor before Schneiderman took the helm January 1. Bloomberg raised a significant amount of money for Throne-Holst’s campaign – she is running in a primary to secure the Democratic Party nomination for the First Congressional Seat currently held by Lee Zeldin. Throne-Holst said the idea of rerouting Tuckahoe Road was indeed brought up during her administration. “It was referred to the county as it is a feeder to [County Road] 39 and therefore needs to be addressed by county DPW (Department of Public Works),” Throne-Holst said. “She knew she would have to deal with me,” Gregor opined. “This has been around for a long time,” Schneidermann said, “but this is the first time the town has asked the club to pay for it.” Gregor said the club hierarchy sent an attorney, Bill Esseks, to his office in 2011 with a similar proposal. “We reviewed it and decided it wasn’t in the best interest of the community,” he said. Schneiderman sought to diffuse CONTINUED ON B-12.

New Road To make it work, the town would have to extend St. Andrews Road north to Tuckahoe Road by the Tuckahoe Lane intersection. The new road would primarily go through woodlands but would impact a handful of homes. Schneiderman said he hoped that somewhere along the way an overpass could be created to capture some of the views being taken away from the public. Traffic heading north on Tuckahoe Lane at the Southampton College intersection would be rerouted by making a sharp right after going through CR 39 to a yet to be opened extension near the golf course practice facility. It would run about 900 feet east to St. Andrew Road. Tuckahoe Road has been closed in the past when the club hosted the U.S. Open, and it is scheduled to do so in 2018. Just days after the meeting between Bloomberg and Schneiderman, the USGA president Diana Murphy announced Shinnecock would host the 2026 Open as well. Schneiderman acknowledged he knew the 2026 event had been scheduled, but was asked to keep it quiet so the PGA could make the announcement. Tens of thousands of spectators attend the event, and it takes months of preparation beforehand to set up the course to handle the throngs of spectators and the television equipment. But despite the constant references to the Open, and the concerns about the safety of pedestrians, this is nothing more than a land grab, charged Alex Gregor, the Southampton Highway Superintendent. “First they screwed the Shinnecock Indians and now they are trying to screw the taxpayers,” Gregor said. The Shinnecock Nation has maintained the golf course property was illegally taken from them and sued for damages – that story is reported elsewhere in this issue. Gregor thinks the Bloomberg visit to Schneiderman constitutes an end-around. “No, Jay hasn’t included me in the conversation; I haven’t seen any plans or drawings. Can you abandon a road without the Highway Superintendent’s approval? No.” Schneiderman said it was

Gregor No Fan Of Bloomberg Heavy construction on White’s Lane, allegedly at the Bloomberg residence, cost Southampton Town thousands of dollars to repair.

Gregor said the pair has some history together; it wasn’t a pleasant experience, at least not for Gregor. Bloomberg reportedly purchased the 35-acre Ballyshear estate on White’s Lane in Southampton in 2011. “Mike Bloomberg knows who I am. We had some issues,” Gregor related. “There was four years of construction at his property.” The historic estate is not visible from the road and guarded by a gatehouse. It is bordered by Barker’s Island Road to the west and Millstone Brook Road to the north. Bloomberg is the point man for the Shinnecock Golf Club, which wants to privatize a portion of Tuckahoe Road that goes through the course and reroute it. Ballyshear is a stone’s throw away from the club. “We [the town] probably spent $100,000 on his road repaving because of all the heavy equipment rolling in and out,” Gregor said. “I asked him if he would be willing

to pay for the repairs and he said, `Only if my neighbors’ are willing to. I said `You’re the only one doing the damage.’” Ballyshear was designed by the famous architect F. Burrall Hoffman for Charles Blair Mcdonald, who is credited with building the first 18-hole golf course in the country. Gregor said the parcel is rich with kettle holes, wetlands and a swale and was a wildlife haven, “at least it was until the construction started.” The gardens were designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, who designed the Central and Prospect Park gardens. The property boasts a pool, a tennis court, horse-riding trails, stables and grazing areas according to published reports. An aerial view shows what could be a helicopter landing pad on the property, but that could not be confirmed. Bloomberg owns a $4.5 million, sixseat Agusta SPA A109S helicopter and has been known to fly it to The Hamptons, according to the New York Times.

Tribe Losing Land Dispute Battle The Shinnecock Indian Nation once owned much of the eastern Southampton Town terrain until a state law in 1859 took it away. Shinnecock Hills Golf Course and the Southampton College campus were among the 3600 acres taken. The tribe subsequently charged in court papers it constituted an illegal taking. But over the course of 10 years, two courts have ruled against the Shinnecock, leaving the State Supreme Court as the final arbiter. The U.S. Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled against the tribe in October, agreeing with a lower court decision. The Shinnecock received federal recognition in 2010, but the belated recognition apparently had no bearing on the lawsuit. The tribe has had a deteriorating relationship with the Shinnecock Golf Club. A decade ago the club’s hierarchy decided not to retain the longtime grounds superintendent, Peter Smith, whose family filled that position for 44 years. Smith prepared the course for the 1996 U.S. Open. The Shinnecocks were given a lucrative parking concession by the PGA for the Open in 1996 worth about $100,000 but were bypassed in 2004 when the Open returned to Shinnecock Golf Club. Though tribal leaders claimed it was because they were pressing for a gambling casino on their reservation, insiders told The Independent some tribal members tried to shake down spectators when they returned to their cars and the Southampton Town Police confirmed that allegation. Brad Bender Gets Two Years In Prison By Rick Murphy

The topsy-turvy world of Southampton Town politics took an unfathomable turn in November with the abrupt resignation of Councilman Brad Bender. Friday the sordid tale of a community leader turned addict and dealer reached the inevitable culmination: Bender is going to jail. Bender admitted in court to conspiracy to distribute oxycodone pills, a powerful narcotic opioid

alkaloid that has been attributed to scores of overdose deaths on Long Island. Michael Troyan, a Riverhead physician’s assistant, and Bender’s co-defendant, has agreed to serve nine years in prison, prosecutors said, after pleading guilty last week. He will not appeal the verdict as part of the deal. Bender was one of Troyan’s distributors and had obtained “several thousand pills” over three years, according

years Friday morning by Justice Arthur D. Spatt. He has until September 15 to turn himself in and also agreed to pay a $5000 fine. Bender will be on probation for three years after his release. Troyan agreed to forfeit $710,000 in illegal profits though his attorney said he did not have the full amount to turn over. Bender was defeated in his first try for office in 2011 and alienated more than a few party loyalists with a post election diatribe – during which he appeared to be under the influence. He lashed out at fellow candidate Christine Scalera and longtime board member Nancy Graboski as well as several other entities, including this newspaper, presumably because he lost the race. He reportedly blamed his outburst on having a bad reaction to medication afterwards. Bender has since admitted that he became addicted to pain meds in 2011. Nevertheless he ran again in 2013 on the Independence and D e m o c r a t i c Pa r t y l i n e s a n d prevailed. Bender acknowledged in federal court he resold the pills to other dealers and addicts, sometimes trading them for steroids. He initially faced up to 20 years in prison but agreed to cooperate with the investigators in return for a lighter sentence. Troyan initially pleaded innocent.

RICK’S SPACE Keeping It Real I recently passed my real estate salesman test, which is pretty good when you consider I didn’t study and I didn’t cheat, like I used to at St. Augustine’s Diocesan High School in Brooklyn. My mother used to say if we spent as much time studying as we did devising ways to cheat we wouldn’t have to cheat. Yeah, but that’s no fun. Here are some important real estate terms to memorize:

“Borders Preserved Parcel!” Where they’re going to build the methadone walk-in center.

“Steps To Beach!” If Andre The Giant starts walking from this dump in the early morning he could see water by midnight.

“A H a m p t o n s C l a s s i c ! ” A Hamptons’ teardown.

“Great Mother/Daughter Potential!” You can put several families upstairs and several more in the basement. The shed is pretty big, too. “Animal Lovers’ Paradise!” Looks like Big and Little Edie Beale moved out yesterday. “Hamptons Contemporary!” Looks like Shecky Green lived there in 1958. “Smell The Ocean!” That doesn’t smell like water to me, Bub. “Builder’s Own!” Yeah, and that’s why he’s selling it before winter sets in. “South Of The Highway!” OK, we meant Flanders Road.

“Wildlife Refuge!” Hey, rats are animals, too. “At The End Of a Cul-de-Sac!” Remember all those pictures of the car in that guy’s living room? “Sand At You Feet!” Well, it’s actually wood shavings from the termites, but whatever.

“A Secluded Gem!” Or, as the rest of the world calls them, a Zombie House. “Breathtaking Views!” Down, boy, she’s the neighbor’s daughter. “Bike To The Ocean!” If your name is Lance Armstrong. “Finished Basement!” For lots of your lil frens. “Pond Front!” Or, as we call

So you can buy an $895 T-shirt. “Hear The Pounding Surf!” Actually those are the Bongo drummers at the Hulu Lodge getting loose after popping some more pep pills. “Priceless Antiques!” Worthless old junk. “Family Heirlooms!” Worthless old junk.

the initial criticism of the proposal at a recent town board meeting by assuring the public the proposal was only in its beginning phase and that it would be thoroughly vetted. He was clearly open to the idea, however, calling the Shinnecock Club “a good neighbor.” Earlier this year Schneiderman championed a project that installed a blinking light at the Tuckahoe Road/CR 39 intersection in hopes of

speeding up traffic. It didn’t work, he said recently. “We had a feeling the blinking light thing was a ploy when they announced it,” Gregor said. “There has to be a community benefit,” Schneiderman said. “Right now there is a lot of commercial traffic going through the course to bypass CR-39 and there is a lot of pedestrian traffic on the course so I understand their desires.” Currently the intense traffic on CR-39 is a hindrance to ambulances, firefighters, and police. The Moody’s Is High The Town of Southampton received a credit upgrade to its highest level this week. Moody’s Investors Service joins Standard & Poor’s in rating Southampton as AAA. The review was initiated at the request of Supervisor Jay Schneiderman who led the presentation to Moody’s. Earlier this year, Schneiderman met with S&P who later affirmed the AAA rating will not change over the next twoyear outlook horizon. The AAA rating, the highest credit rating available, provides assurance to investors of the town’s strong ability to repay outstanding liabilities and qualifies the town for the lowest interest rates on capital borrowing. In a press release, Moody’s credits the town’s strengths on key factors such as: • A very large and stable tax base which showed continued resilience • Strong management and diversified revenue that provide for stable operations • Recent financial performance which has led to growth in its available fund balance “I am pleased that Moody’s recognized our strong financial management team as one of the key elements associated with the upgrade,” said Schneiderman. The super visor congratulated Comptroller Len Marchese and the town board for the excellent jobs they are doing with the town’s

finances. “This upgrade validates the town’s financial practices including strong fiscal and management decisions of the past several years. We have strived to provide efficient public services, while maintaining fiscal constraint. I commend the Supervisor and Town Board for their continued commitment to sound fiscal policies,” said

Marchese. The Moody’s report also stated, “Management is actively working to ensure the Town maintains its appeal for years to come.” Moody’s recognized the significant revitalization efforts underway throughout the town as well as ongoing preservation efforts and a commitment to maintaining infrastructure.

The Moody’s report concludes, “The stable outlook reflects the expectation that the Town will continue to maintain a solid financial performance and its tax base will remain extremely large and diverse.” Supervisor Schneiderman said, “The highest credit rating and the stable outlook give us confidence as we move forward working hard for the people of Southampton.” Schneiderman has the distinction of helming two towns that achieved Moody’s highest rating. He was supervisor in East Hampton Town (2000-2003) when it achieved its fiscal pinnacle.

Just A Little Release By Kitty Merrill

Lots of action in Albany last week, as lawmakers finished up their legislative session for the summer. Below, find some of what our local reps are working on. • Senator Ken LaValle and Assemblyman Fred Thiele announced that the legislature approved their legislation, which would authorize the issuance of bonds by the Town of East Hampton to finance airport improvements at the East Hampton Airport for a period not to exceed 30 years. The town’s grant assurances from the Federal Aviation Administration expired on December 31, 2014, and

as such, the town no longer obtains FAA funding for the operation and maintenance of the airport and now assumes all responsibility to finance airport capital projects. Current local finance law defines the maximum amortization period for airport projects as 10 years. This legislation would allow the town to bond out improvements over a longer period of time, up to 30 years, in an effort to give the town the time officials need to fully plan and implement costly infrastructure work, and to ensure that the airport remains self-sustainable. The legislation must now be delivered to the governor for consideration.

• Assemblyman Thiele announced that the Amagansett School District will be receiving $31,800 from New York State to improve school connectivity and classroom technology. Montauk Library will be a recipient of $24,218 New York State Public Library Construction Grants, which be used for the installation of new high efficiency furnaces and fire-code compliant doors. • Revenues for the Peconic Bay Community Preservation Fund (CPF) for the first five months of 2016 are down 1.2 percent compared to last year for the same time period, Thiele reported. The CPF collected $38.78 million compared to $39.25 million last year. The number of transactions for the first five months of 2016 was 2,498 compared with 2,978 a year ago. Peconic Bay Regional Community Preservation Fund has generated $1.132 billion. In the last 12 months, the CPF has generated $104.48 million. The 2% tax under the CPF expires in 2030. Thiele stated, “The CPF revenues in the first five months of 2016 are less than 2015 by 1.2%. This marks the third consecutive month that CPF revenues are less than the same month in 2015. Over the last quarter CPF revenues were $19.89 million compared with $23.94 million a year ago or a 16.9% decline. While CPF revenues are on pace to exceed $90 million for the year, the Towns should take note of this apparent downward trend.” • The state assembly passed legislation requiring the state health and education departments to create statewide guidelines for school districts and boards of cooperative educational services (BOCES) to test drinking water for lead. Under the measure, costs associated with testing and remediation will be eligible for reimbursement by the state. “When parents send their children to school, they do so expecting they will learn in a safe environment. However, recent test results have shown some schools in New York State have unsafe levels of lead in their drinking water,” said Assemblyman Thiele. “This legislation will create standards that ensure every school across the state - whether in a wealthy area or a poor community has the resources it needs to test its drinking water, so we can be sure our kids aren’t being exposed to harmful levels of lead.” • “I have zero tolerance for corruption in government,” Thiele said in a release last week. “That’s why I passed a resolution to amend the New York State Constitution that provides for the stripping of pensions for public officials convicted of a felony related to their official duties. Politicians who betray the public trust and use their office to line their own pockets shouldn’t be rewarded with pension benefits paid for by taxpayers. “Unfortunately, those who serve in government sometimes forget what public service is all about and help themselves instead of their constituents. Politicians aren’t above the law, and this legislation makes clear that there are serious consequences when they commit a crime. If you defraud the people, we’ll defund your pension.” For this amendment to become law, it must pass in both chambers again next legislative session. At that point, it will be placed on the ballot as a public referendum for voters to amend the New York State Constitution.

A Message from Hampton Septic Services When it comes to Septic Systems most homeowners take the “Out of Sight Out of Mind” approach. If you don’t see it, you don’t have any nasty odors and septic backing up then why have it serviced? This way of thinking can cost you a lot of time and even more money! At Hamptons Septic Services OUR approach is to be Proactive rather than Reactive. More often than not, new customers contact us because their Septic System is failing at which point it becomes very difficult to control. Signs that your Septic System is failing can come in the form of simultaneously slow drainage and/or water backing up in tubs, sinks, toilets, washing machines, unusual gurgling sounds when running water, increasingly unpleasant odors in and around the house, discoloring and softening of your lawn, and depressions in the soil around the system. The good news is YES, IT IS POSSIBLE to prevent septic back-ups! Our customers receive recommended routine maintenance pumping which allows proper functionality of their septic systems preventing the unknown.

understandIng your sePtIc system: The components of modern septic systems are a house sewer drain, a septic tank, a cesspool, and the soil absorption field.

Some older homes have only a cesspool ring acting as the primary Septic Tank which then leaches directly to the soil. When you run water or flush a toilet the discharge from the drain is first collected by the Septic Tank. The Septic Tank is designed to separate waste, solids sink to the bottom forming the sludge layer and the lighter solids such as grease rise to the surface forming the scum layer. Between the solid and scum layers is the waste water layer which will eventually drain to the Cesspool where it then slowly leaches out into the ground to be biologically treated by the soil. common sePtIc system Issues: After the Septic Tank separates waste, the solids that remain in the tank are meant to break down over time, but often the rate of solid accumulation exceeds the rate of the breakdown causing the solids to overflow to the cesspool and ground, eventually causing backup of septic in the yard or house. Frequent removal and pumping of the solids in the Septic Tank will prevent system back-ups. Other reasons for poor drainage of your system could be frequent rainfall, or close proximity to beaches and oceans where the water tables are higher. In this case your system capacity may need to be increased by adding additional Cesspools.

the more you know...the more you save how often should I PumP my sePtIc tank: There are many variables which will determine how often you should have your system pumped. The New York State Department of Health recommends having your system, pumped out every two to three years. If you have a garbage disposal, live close to a body of water, have a smaller or older septic system then you may want to have it pumped more frequently. I have no Idea where to fInd my sePtIc tank, can you locate It? Yes! We can locate your septic system using many techniques. We recommend locating your system prior to needing it serviced. If you wait to locate your system in an emergency it can become very messy and costly. what should not go Into the sePtIc system? Septic systems are designed to treat domestic waste water produced from routine activities such as bathing, toilets, dishwashers and washing machines. Do not drain or flush harsh chemicals, paint, solvents, paint cleaners and degreasers, and pesticides. Refrain from disposing of latex products, feminine hygiene products, baby or personal wipes and any other dense waste.

Continued from page 12. This week, Schumer said it is time for the feds to give Long Island the update it deserves and one it has been patiently awaiting. FIMP, which Schumer has long supported, is studying storm protection measures between Fire Island and Montauk Point including home elevations and road raisings. The Army Corps’ FIMP project for hurricane protection and beach erosion control is along five reaches of the south shore of Long Island between Fire Island Inlet and Montauk Point, a distance of approximately 83 miles. The project also authorizes federal participation in periodic beach nourishment. Major dunes and beach nourishment could commence across the south shore of Suffolk County. Though some interim construction has been completed upisland, the project has never been fully completed. Following passage of the SandyRelief Bill, Schumer pushed for and secured full federal funding for the project. Schumer pointed to the historic nature of the Eastern Long Island project, known as “Fire Island to Montauk Point” – the approximately $750 million project has been planned since 1960, but could never receive the necessary funding. Schumer said that the Army Corps should immediately release the draft report and provide public meetings in Long Island communities so that impacted residents can review the Army Corps plans and project alternatives and provide experts with necessary community input as they continue to rebuild after Superstorm Sandy. East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell agreed. “Release of the FIMP Plan has been a long time coming and I do hope it is released for public review in August,” he said. “We need to get to work on what I hope will be a major sand replenishment project in Montauk.” As Schumer urged the Army Corps to get a move on, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Park Officials announced that the muchneeded beach nourishment project began at Meschutt Beach County Park in Hampton Bays. Editorial We all know it. We all talk about it daily. It’s the first thing people commiserate about when they arrive, and the first thing they dread when they leave. Traffic and driving on the East End, to put it in the vernacular, sucks. Trade paraders and delivery trucks jockey for positions with entitled Escaladers, many of whom only drive their big rigs “in the country,” making up for a lack of experience with an abundance of “Me First” attitude. That attitude is frustratingly evident at an array of intersections, with motorists making four lanes out of two, or worse, “blocking the box.” Tried to head west into Southampton Village lately? Expect to sit at the light for a while, as those turning left from County Road 39 pile up in the intersection. Same thing happens at other heavily used intersections like Bridgehampton Turnpike/Ocean Road intersection in Bridgehampton. It’s frustrating, and, even worse, potentially life-threatening. Spend time near Montauk Highway any given weekend, and the number of times the sound of sirens sears into the traffic cacophony can be surprising. Ambulances racing to the hospital towards Bridgehampton’s narrow Main Street or Southampton’s blocked box can be thwarted in their mission by drivers who . . . Just. Don’t. Move. Failure to pull over and get out of the way of an ambulance can cost a patient precious minutes. A while back, community members crafted signs that say “Drive Like Your Child Lives Here.” We propose an amendment for posting on ambulances. “Pull Over Like Your Kid’s IN HERE.” To the CR39/SR27 box blockers, perhaps Southampton cops might consider deploying a traffic control officer to the intersection, to help drivers understand what a red light means. And to those drivers who do pull over for ambulances: don’t go whipping out behind the ambo in an attempt to pass all the other cars that pulled over. That’s just a dick move.

Disgrace At Long Beach Dear Editor, I was walking at Long Beach in Sag Harbor last evening to view the beautiful sunset. The wind was blowing from the south. Walking past the PortaPotti near the west lifeguard stand, the stench was absolutely nauseating. This is a disgrace. Walking at the east end of the roadway, I

saw some benches completely inaccessible. The last one with a plaque by the Griffin family was encased in poison ivy. Another was surrounded by weeds. Anyone who is concerned about ticks would not attempt to approach it. I think it is inexcusable that the families who dedicated these benches to family members be so disrespected. Why does the park department let this happen? They certainly charge enough for a season pass. In past years there have been at least three or four employees sitting by the entrance where fees are collected. Why not have a couple of them do some real work? ED JABLONSKY

Ed Gifford Larry The Lobster Dear Editor, The Town of Hempstead recently released a 130-year-old lobster named Larry who has been confined to a tiny tank at an Island Park bar for the past three decades. Town Supervisor Anthony Santino said, “Our message in Hempstead Town is why eat a lobster when you can save one.”

This is good advice and should apply to all lobsters everywhere. Lobsters can live to be more than 100 years old, they recognize individual lobsters, remember past acquaintances, have elaborate courtship rituals, and help guide young lobsters across the ocean floor by holding claws in a line that can stretch for many yards. Doomsday Donald Dear Rick, Britain has voted Brexit, to remove itself from the European Union. It was instigated and promulgated by the Anglo Right similar to our home grown wrong Right Wing lead by opportunist and unqualified presidential candidate Donald Trump. In Britain, immediately after the votes were confined and the reality set in, millions echoed a general outcry, “WHAT HAVE WE DONE?” Many said they only voted to secede in order to “Shake things up; never thought it would succeed.” Britain is in turmoil. There is now a popular outcry for a revote. I understand that is not possible. We have our own doomsday scenario approaching. If we elect Trump, a harrowing harbinger of impending disaster as our president, we will be removing our country from its traditional role as the wise and fair Democratic country and the envy of the world. MTV party house on Dune Road in East Quogue. Photos of that scene show a single family residence jampacked with scantily-clad yuppies boozing it up. An episode of “Say What Karaoke,” and other MTV programs were filmed there. Lots of stars stopped by for a photo-op. It went south after a brawl at Summers Beach Club involved over 100 people and resulted in arrests on charges related to assault and burglary. The MTV fracas came on the heels of the widely panned “The Hamptons” miniseries, which aired on ABC in 2002. Entertainment

writer Neal Travis said the series, “Missed its target in almost every way.” David Bianculli of the Daily News wrote, “There’s so much to dislike about ABC’s “The Hamptons” that it’s hard to know where to begin.” He noted the documentary mirrored another four-part series lensed for the WE network called “Single in the Hamptons,” released at the same time, writing, “The more most of these people reveal about themselves, the less you want to spend any time with them.” In his New York Post critique, Travis lambasted the mini series for exploiting The Hamptons, stating, “The incredible natural beauty of the area was besmirched by the

An Unforgettable Round Of Golf By Rick Murphy

The first time Keith Larsen hit a golf ball was almost the last. “I was at the Sag Harbor golf course with Fred Thiele when I was 13. I had to use his right-handed golf clubs and being left-handed I turned it over and hit it with the back side of the club. Needless to say I stunk and immediately gave up this stupid game,” Larsen recalled. Fortunately, he played a chance game nearly two decades later and the results were a lot better. He’s been playing – and winning, ever since. Luckily for readers, Larsen was a lot better writing his first novel than he was taking his first golf swing: Sticks Johnson: Bad Lies And Strange Bounces is a must read for golf enthusiasts and fans of humor writing. It is a ribald tale of a single round of Match Play golf, pitting Sticks

Johnson against Gus Giovanni, an idiot savant who has trouble putting on his pants but nevertheless has beaten Sticks in the Club Championship 15 straight years. Each chapter is a hole; and on each hole we meet one or two of Larsen’s unforgettable cast of characters including a Special Ops Colonel turned cross dresser, a former stripper who becomes a nun and a bartender who worked at the White House – until he accidentally “outed” his boss’s mistress – his boss being The Prez, of course. “Many of the characters are people that I either play golf with or grew up with,” Larsen recalled. “One of the characters is a nun who is very similar to one that had taught me in grammar school. She had a vicious temper, weighed about 105 pounds but could kick the living daylights out of anyone.” The heart of the book, though,

is not the hilarious banter but the wisdom it imparts to golfers. And make no mistake, Larsen knows a thing or two about the game: He’s a seven time Club Champion at Nassau Country Club and will break a record that has stood for 120 years if he wins another. “I had to get control of my nerves and learn how to win,” Larsen said. “I read every book I could get my hands on about the mental side of golf. I bought tapes, videos and even went to a sports psychologist. Eventually, I learned.” Larsen spent summers in Sag Harbor as a youngster, living with his grandparents Kai and Anna Andersen on Jefferson Street in the big white boarding house behind the library. “I had a great upbringing. Those were without a doubt the best years of my life. I spent two summers working for John Steinbeck, not

that I learned my writing skills from him! In fact if he read my writing he’d probably slap me!” Larsen said with a laugh. Though he didn’t play golf, Larsen excelled at baseball. “I was a pretty good baseball pitcher and first basemen which got me into Continued on Page 47.

Aviators Move Into First Place

By Rick Murphy

Remember all that talk about Riverhead opening the Hamptons Collegiate baseball league season by winning nine straight? Forget about it. The Tomcats haven’t won since. On Saturday the Sag Harbor Whalers, who were mired in last place, took out Riverhead for the second straight day to hand the reeling ‘Cats another loss, 11-9. The Whalers, playing on the road, scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to wrestle control of

the game. Jack Thompson doubled to bring one run home – it was his 13th ribbie of the young season – then Shane Melbrod and Philip Maldari drilled hits. Riverhead fell apart, committing four errors in the inning as Sag Harbor opened up a nine-run cushion only to watch most of it evaporate. Asher Lee-Tyson and Joseph Flynn both doubled home runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Tomcats would continue to inch closer in the seventh, with the bases loaded and

nobody out, Tim DeGraw walked in a run, Mike Flynn brought in another on a fielder’s choice and Kiambu Fentress singled to cut Sag Harbor’s lead to 10-8. Kendall Pomeroy came in to put out the fire and recorded the final out with a lot of help from Jake Thompson, who snared a liner from Luke DeVenney to end the threat. Sag Harbor would get another run in the eighth on a Manny Ramirez Jr. RBI single and the Whalers headed to the bottom of the ninth with a three run lead. Chris

Southampton’s Doug Trimble, who just completed his freshman year at Delaware, went wild Thursday night, going five for six with two homers and two doubles. The Breakers beat the North Fork Ospreys 20-4. Trimble also had six ribbies.

Sheehan came out of the pen and gave up a run before recording the final three outs of the game and earned the save. As of this writing the Whalers are 7-11-1, good for fifth place. Riverhead is holding down second place with a 9-6-1 mark. First place Westhampton (14-41) couldn’t stand the prosperity, promptly losing to Montauk Friday to end an eight game winning streak. Montauk, down 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, rallied for two runs to tie up the game in the sixth and scored again in the seventh to win it before the home crowd, 4-3. Montauk got an early run in the first inning when Aviators starter Casey Sutherland walked in Billy McLean but Westhampton rallied in the fourth. Aaron Ping went deep he leads the league with eight home runs – and Roman Baisa singled in another run to give Westhampton a 2-1 lead. However, a strong throw from Zachar y Pearson to the plate prevented another run from scoring. Jacob Jaye hit a sac fly the next inning to make it a 3-1 affair but the Mustangs scored twice in the sixth to knot things at 3 courtesy of ribbies by Rob Vani, who singled, and McLean, who walked with the bases loaded. The Mustangs would get the go-ahead run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Myles Zillinsky and Jamie Galazin shut the door in the bottom of the inning to earn the save. Westhampton’s Matt Dunleavy finished the game 3-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to nine games. Dunleavy currently leads the HCBL in batting average with a .429 mark The complete standings: Westhampton, Riverhead, North Fork 13-9, Montauk 11-9, Sag Harbor, Shelter Island 5-12-1 and Southampton 6-14.

The book is not rated “G” – like a typical day on the course with the guys, there are a few R-rated moments. It bothered a least one reviewer. “He called me to tell me he was offended by my humor and my lack of sensitivity . . . I asked him if I could quote him on the book cover. He hung up on me,” Larsen recalled. While this is a funny golf story, it centers more on the mental side of golf. “Every chapter delivers something different about the mental side and the message is told through the characters,” the author said. “I guess you could say it’s about life.” As for Sticks’s nemesis, Gus, Larsen said, “We hear about people who go to a recital of Mozart just once and then play it flawlessly. So I thought why not golf. Let’s face it, we all know of golfers who are really good -- maybe they aren’t idiot savants but they are idiots.” The novel is available at Barnes & Noble, ebay, Kindle and other outlets. On The Water Stacked Stripers Hitting Live Bunker Shinnecock Bay Fluke finally showed up in the bay. With all this warm weather it was just a matter of time. The west side of the bay is producing some good numbers of fish and many of them are keepers. Most are hitting on squid and spearing as well as Gulp.

Peconic Bay Rodgers Rock is now holding porgies of some good size. Clams and worms are both working, along with some clam chum. Stripers are being caught on the night tides around Cow’s Neck and the small inlets around the bay. Poppers and white bucktails are taking these

DFS May Be Back This Week It’s not gambling. It’s not gambling. It’s not gambling. Daily Fantasy Sports players have recited that mantra so often lately that even New York State legislators started believing it. Now it’s Governor Andrew Cuomo’s turn. Cuomo was expected to sign a bill that would allow DFS to commence again after it was banned in New York State. The three-pronged agreement between the Senate, Assembly, and Governor call for DFS providers like FanDuel and Draft Kings to pay a licensing fee and fork over a portion of their revenues to the state. The state had argued that DFS betting is, in essence, gambling; industry leaders argued it is a game of skill and thus exempt from the state’s anti-gambling legislation. The issue may yet end up in federal court: some legal experts say an amendment is needed as opposed to legislative action to clarify whether DFS is indeed legal.

Continued from page 24. Lions Share The Sag Harbor Lions held their Charter Night and annual meeting on June 22 at the American Hotel with 36 Lions, Lion dignitaries, spouses, and guests were in attendance. During the evening’s proceedings, Dr. Scarlett Magda was officially sworn in as a member by Lions District Governor Manny Vidal, Jr. from Brentwood. He also officiated the swearing-in of each newly elected officer. The official passing of the gavel from outgoing Lion President Ernest Schade to new President Steve Espach will happen on Friday. Lion Steve Espach is currently working on the goals for the upcoming year. “My first goal is to increase our membership that we’ve lost over the past two years due to passing, moving away and retirements. We brought in new members, but they did not equal those we lost. The rest of the club would also agree with me that we need a few younger members to join our community service work.” One of the newer members of the club, Julian Ramiez, a manager at the American Hotel, became a United States citizen earlier in the day. When the announcement was made at the meeting of his accomplishment, he smiled from ear to ear and the members and guests spontaneously broke into “God Bless America” and concluded with cheers and congratulations for Lion Julian. Lion Ernest was presented with a plaque thanking him for his years of service to the club as President from 2007-2016. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Melvin Jones Fellowship award to Lion Gabe Schiavoni for his 52 years of service to the club. Lion Gabe said, “I’ve held every office in this club except treasurer. There have only been three treasurers since I joined in 1964 and there was no need for me to have that position.” The award is named for Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions Clubs International in Chicago, IL in 1917. the evening was Mr. Josh Belury of Conscience Point Shellfish Hatchery in North Sea. In his presentation, he mentioned that he has worked with Lions Clubs for a long time, but this was the first time he ever attended a Lions meeting. Belury talked about their new sailing vessel named “Jacob.” It is the only three-masted schooner docked in Sag Harbor and it’s in a junk rig design that has an unusual feature that can accommodate wheelchairs on its aft deck. The next Sag Harbor Lions membership meeting on July 27 will honor their scholarship awardwinners and their parents. They will be the guests of the club for dinner at the American Hotel. The awards will be presented by the Chair of the Scholarship Committee, Lion Mark Poitras.

Bridgehampton

Ramadan Dinner All are welcome to a Ramadan Iftar dinner at the Unitarian Universalist Meetinghouse on the Sag Harbor-Bridgehampton Turnpike at 7:30 PM tonight. The Iftar celebration is co-hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork, and Christ Episcopal Church and Temple Adas Israel of Sag Harbor. Almost a hundred community members, including over two dozen Muslim friends and neighbors from Iraq, Morocco, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt and the USA as well as

neighbors with dozens of other faiths and backgrounds, have been invited. The plan is to break the fast together in a spirit of friendship and neighborliness, showing to the world that when fear strikes, we stand together on the side of love, say organizers. Bring a dish to share and RSVP by calling 631-365-1453.
