Here is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page of the “Chicago Tribune” after a column he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins:
MY MIND IS AS USELESS AS JASON PIERRE-PAUL’S INDEX FINGER
I’m burnt out. I can’t think of a thing to write about. Too much cooking . . . too much eating. Add to that a lot of agita (heartburn) from my fears that an angry, frightened nation might, as the song goes, “Send in the Clown” and turn Donald Trump from a bad joke into a candidate, and there goes my Republican Party. The ticket of Donald Trump for President and, let’s say, Rick Santorum (who thinks like Donald) as Vice President will spell the end of the Republican Party in my lifetime. This will put Hillary in the White House until 2024.
By then, with some luck, I’ll be dead. But on a cheerier note . . . Let me fill up this space and share with you an email I received the other day. I think it’s funny and it’s timely. I know many of you have already seen it on the internet. Read it again. It’s on the subject of being politically correct, and it brilliantly puts down those kaleeating, holier-than-thou, Occupy Wall Street loudmouths who are ruining what used to be a great nation. No matter which side you are on in the matter of renaming the Washington Redskins, this is funny:

Dear Mr. Page: I agree with our Native American population. I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward. Let’s ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns. The Carolina Panthers, obviously, were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60’s alive. Gone. It’s offensive to us white folk. The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men’s lives. I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres. Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about
IN THE NEWS
the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates! Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children. The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children. The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/ barbiturates. Wrong message to our children. The Milwaukee Brewers. Well, that goes without saying. Wrong message to our children. So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the donothing Congress loves to embrace rather than doing what they were elected to do. As a die-hard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women’s athletic teams to something other than “the Beavers” (especially when they play Southern California. Do we really want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers???). I’m just saying ... I always love your articles and I generally agree with them. As for the Redskins name, I would suggest they change the name to the “Foreskins” to better represent their community, paying tribute to the dickheads in Congress. Arrests At Mitt Romney Fundraiser Lead To Lawsuits By Rick Murphy
The pair guided their small craft through the dark waters and towards the impressive estate on the east side of the murky pond. There, a hundred shakers and movers had donated $5000 or more for a chance to rub shoulders with the man who might well become the next President of the United States. The two men had sailed the waters many times before – in fact, they live only a few hundred yards away. On this day, though – something was different: different and terribly wrong. Suddenly a motorboat – a rare sight on Georgica Pond -- rapidly approached them, a burly man they had seen earlier at the helm. He obviously meant business. He told them they were not allowed on the pond, they said later. They persisted. Their boat was rammed, they alleged. Undeterred, one of them jumped overboard and raced toward the gathering. Secret Ser vice and other armed security men at the estate responded. Mitt Romney, the Republican Party presidential candidate, was whisked away from the shoreline. The men were subdued – subdued before they could cause any more trouble. Later they said, they were manhandled, handcuffed, denied medication, humiliated, and arrested. But these weren’t assassins, or secret agents. They didn’t carry licenses that began with double zeroes, and they weren’t armed other than the rainbow flag they were flying. Last week Simon Kinsella and David Fink retaliated, filing a suit in United States District Court against the Village of East Hampton, village officials, and members of the village police department and its chief, Gerard Larsen. They are seeking $5 million damages plus punitive damages and attorney’s fees. And they want acknowledgement that how they were treated on Georgica Pond on July 8, 2012 was unconstitutional. F i n k a c k n o w l e d g e d t h e y, “Intended to exercise their First Amendment right of freedom of speech” to “protest statements made my Mr. Romney.” The event was at Ron Perelman’s 57-acre property dubbed “The Creeks.” The two men were each charged with disorderly conduct, obstruction of justice, and resisting arrest, but the charges were dismissed in early 2013, the complaint notes. At the time of the arrest Capt. Michael Tracey acknowledged that
a “line” was set across the bay, and Kink and Kinsella sailed past it. East Hampton Village Police Capt. Michael Tracey said the police line was drawn across Georgica Pond at the request of the U.S. Secret service. Chief Larsen said Fink ignored a direct order and attempted to flee the scene by jumping into the water. As it turns out, the officer in the police boat was Sgt. Jeffrey Erickson, but Fink and Kinsella said he was not wearing a uniform and did not
identify himself. In fact, Georgica Pond is outside village limits. “He was wearing blue shorts,” Fink said Monday. “He was getting in a little metal boat with a motor. We asked him if he was going over to see Romney and he said no, he was going fishing.” But, Fink said, the Secret Service denied it asked Village Police to do anything of the kind in response to a FOIA request. In East Hampton Town Justice Court, Erickson’s statement was
read aloud. Fink and Kinsella were “Yelling anti-Romney political statements without lawful authority to do so,” the complaint read. Fink said Justice Catherine Cahill called the complaint “ridiculous” in open court, Fink related. East Hampton Village Administrator Becky Molinari did not return a call for comment. Jeltje DeJong from the Smithtownbases law firm Devitt Spellman Barrett LLP did not return a call for comment.

To give back to those who gave so much for us – that’s why he does it. In advance of one of the most popular annual events of the summer, The Independent this week talked to Tony Ganga, described by friends as “the pulse of Soldier Ride The Hamptons.” For the last four years, Ganga has been chair of the Soldier Ride The Hamptons committee. “I’m the ringleader of the band,” he said cheerfully on Monday. Ganga wrangles a group of over a dozen volunteers, each of whom has a task to perform to get ready for the big event on Saturday, he explained. Debbie DiSunno, for example,

organizes the EMS crew that is on stand by during the rides. Others take care of advertising and publicity, while Brenda McPherson handles what Ganga calls “a thankless job:” soliciting food donations for the pre-ride breakfast and post-ride community picnic. “Patty Sales is the wild card,” Ganga said. “She does anything I ask her to do.” On Monday Sales was on the job, determined to procure food that hadn’t been donated. “It’s a lot of legwork,” Ganga said. Volunteers handle the multitude of details related to the rides, walks, breakfast, and picnic. Soldier Ride The Hamptons is comprised of four options for exertion. Participants can do a 5K walk in Sag Harbor or Amagansett, or cycle 30 or 60-mile rides, with routes to Montauk and Sag Harbor. Online registration closes today at 5 PM, but participants can register the day of the event as well. The day starts at 7 AM with registration and packet pickup. At 8, the opening ceremony for the Sag Harbor walk is held in Marine Park. At 8:30 AM, the Sag Harbor walk begins and opening ceremonies are held at Amagansett Farm for the hamlet walk and the rides. They begin at 9 AM. At 10:30 AM a tribute to local hero Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter will be held in Marine Park, with what’s described as an unforgettable highlight of the ride, the lap of heroes in Sag Harbor, scheduled for 11 AM. At noon, it’s back to the farm for a community picnic. This year’s ride is dedicated to Lance Corporal Haerter. He was killed in action April 22, 2008 in Ramadi, Iraq at the age of 19. Jordan’s actions that day, along with fallen comrade 21-year-old Corporal Jonathan T. Yale, saved the lives of over 33 Marines and Iraqi Policemen. Both men were posthumously presented the Navy Cross for Extraordinary Heroism, the nation’s second highest military award. The son of JoAnn Lyles and Christian Haerter earned the coveted title of United States Marine on December 1, 2006 and became a member of the fiercely proud 1st Battalion, 9th Marines known as the “Walking Dead.”
The Ride Began Here Now an international phenomena, Soldier Ride was conceived just over 12 years ago right here in East Hampton Town. CONTINUED ON PAGE 19.

thank you To all of our Friends, our Patrons and our Community,
Great Bonac Fireworks By Emily Toy
This weekend, the spirit of July Fourth makes a return visit to the East End with a fireworks display over Three Mile Harbor in East Hampton. The Grucci’s, the first family of fireworks, are slated to do the honors for the 35th time, with the Great Bonac Fireworks Show expected to start at 9:20 PM. For over three decades now, the midsummer fireworks show has lit up the skies for residents and visitors alike. Proceeds from the event benefit numerous local charities, with the show entirely funded by corporate sponsorship and public contributions. The tradition almost faded into history, but in 2009, the East Hampton based Clamshell Foundation began reviving the popular event. The Clamshell Fo u n d a t i o n i s a n o n - p r o f i t organization that donates 100 percent of all profits from events it produces to the people, programs
and projects for the Town of East Hampton. The annual fireworks show started in the early 1970s when George Plimpton, the late writer, actor and founder of the Paris Review, began hosting fireworks parties at his summer homes in Sagaponack and Amagansett. Due to his love for Paris, the show was always scheduled for the first Saturday after Bastille Day. Great viewing locations for Saturday’s show are the beaches at Maidstone Park and Sammy’s Beach, Gann Road and any beach off of Hands Creek Road, Springy Banks Road, plus the head of Three Mile Harbor. The Grucci’s are a fifthgeneration, family owned and operated company on Long Island. They design, produce and display over 300 performances annually around the world, and their credits include seven consecutive U.S. presidential inaugurations from Reagan to Bush (Jr., that is), several Olympics, ane more!
To the Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Southampton and Sag Harbor Fire Departments, as well as the Town of Southampton, To all of the Professionals who helped get us back on our feet and of course, to our Great Staff here at World Pie, We can’t thank you enough for your overwhelming support, and your genuine concern during the difficult time following our Memorial Day Weekend Fire. It is only with your tremendous help that we were able to recover as quickly as we did, and we are once again open and happy to be here for you - just as you were for us. We are truly touched, and forever appreciative. Thank you again, and we look forward to seeing you soon! Mike Mannino and Your Friends at World Pie.

For at least one candidate, Amos Goodman, who’s running for county legislator on the Republican ticket, and trying for the Independence Party line, specifics could be on the horizon. When hopefuls run for office, they have the chance to meet residents, try to hit them up for donations, and learn about myriad issues in each community. They also get a crash course in election law. Here’s one for you, reader. Once
nominated, a candidate must gather signatures from members of the same party, the number determined as a percentage of the number of registered voters of the party in the municipality. The signatures are submitted to the Board of Elections in Yaphank, and could be subject to challenges by opponents. Challenges may relate to such issues as signing a nickname instead of a full, legal name, signing more than one petition, or listing an address that doesn’t match the election rolls. That’s how it’s done for a member of a specific party seeking a place on his party’s ballot line. For a member of a party seeking another line -- if a member of the Republican Party
wants to garner the Independence line, for example -- the hopeful must gather signatures, but, bring along a notary to witness them. Signatures in hand, the GOP hopeful must next seek a document known as a “Wilson Pakula” from the head of the party whose line he seeks. So, a New York Republican needs to have Frank MacKay, the head of the Indies, sign for him to appear on the third party line. The moniker refers to the Wilson Pakula Act of 1947, named after the senator and assemblyman who spearheaded the measure forbidding a candidate not registered with a party from running as its candidate. Several years ago, insiders in

Southampton were surprised when MacKay declined to sign a Wilson Pakula for Democrat Bridget Fleming as she campaigned for town board alongside Independence Party member Anna Throne-Holst. It might go differently this year. On Friday, Frank Dalene, who was running for county legislator on the Independence Party line withdrew from the race. After meeting with both major party candidates – Democrat Fleming and Republican Goodman – Dalene said he began to reconsider his position in the threeway race. Conversations with his political mentor Assemblyman Fred Thiele led Dalene to “wholeheartedly” agree with a Fleming cross-endorsement. “I wish to endorse Bridget Fleming and offer her my support in her campaign for Suffolk County Legislator,” Dalene wrote in an email to The Independent. Republican designee Goodman, meanwhile, collected signatures in an attempt to secure the Independence line. On Monday, he was eagerly awaiting news regarding the Wilson Pakula – would MacKay sign for him or Fleming? As he waited, questions came forward about his petition- gathering methods. Elaine Jones, co-chair of the local Independence Party committee, said this weekend that serious issues surround Goodman’s petitions. Objections were lodged Monday and Jones said she plans to submit specifics. Jones said Goodman failed to have a notary present when he collected signatures, but copies of submitted petitions are signed by a notary. “This is criminal. This is fraud,” she opined. Jones said she plans to contact the county district attorney about the matter. “Any signature we gathered was done extremely carefully,” Goodman countered, describing Jones’ allegation as reckless, irresponsible, and disappointing. The candidate said he’d be happy to provide evidence in the form of petition signers who can attest to the presence of a notary. Jones said she has signers who can attest to the absence of a notary. In other campaign news, there will be a primary. Jones reported that petitions gathered by Republican designee Lisa Larsen in her bid for the Indies line in the East Hampton town board race have enough valid signatures to move forward. Larsen will face Indie Party designees Sylvia Overby and Peter Van Scoyoc in a September primary. The top two vote getters will receive the ballot line.

CPPP Seeks To Add New Properties By Emily Toy
Southampton Town’s preserved land tally is growing and growing. Several properties throughout Southampton Town are expected to be added to the Community Preservation Project Plan, after several public hearings on said properties were discussed at last night’s town board meeting. CPPP identifies target areas and eligible properties for acquisition via the Community Preservation Fund. The properties are located in Southampton Village, Westhampton, and North Haven. Reecam Holdings LLC owns the parcel of land (less than an acre) that’s the site of the Pyrrhus Concer House, located on Pond Lane in Southampton Village. In years past, the property had been the center of controversy when the Southampton Village Architectural Review Board first heard public comment on a proposal to demolish the historic house to make way for a single-family home. The village of Southampton intends to rebuild, reconstruct and manage the Pyrrhus Concer House. Reecam wishes to sell the property to the

town for $4.3 million. In North Haven, 65 acres on Ferry Road are designated in the Village and Hamlet, Greens, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Target Preservation Area of the CPPP. The owners of the land, Tramaridge Estates Inc., are asking $1.1 million for almost four acres of the original 65. Over in Westhampton, a 1.7acre parcel on Shore Road is on
deck to be added to the CPPP. The property’s been designated in the Wetland Preservation Target Area, which is an indispensable and fragile natural resource that is immensely important to both the environmental and economic health of the town. The property, part of the Helen I. Schultz Inter Vivos Trust, is for sale at $300,000. Hills Update “The Hills at Southampton,” a
development project in Quogue to erect residential units, plus a golf course and clubhouse, was slated to receive a final scope for the preparation of a Draft Environmental Impact Statement. At last night’s meeting, the town board was expected to adopt legislation that would rezone certain properties in the project from residential to mixed-use Planned Development District.

Insurance is a service-driven industry. Rates vary, but there is relatively little difference from one company to the next, at least the reputable ones. Commissions are more or less the same. It’s the personal attention, the attention to details and the work ethic of the agent that sets the good ones apart from the others. Some agents “don’t feel that sense of urgency,” pointed out Kevin Lang of Lang Insurance. “When the five o’clock bell rings they are out the door. I don’t fish and I don’t play golf. I’m up at four in the morning. Every client has my number on their cellphone.” “We feel that all of our valuable clients deserve a higher echelon of service, and we wake up and come to work every day excited to provide it to you,” he added. Lang’s specialty is high end, high network clients, so the Hamptons has proven fertile ground for him, though he has a national clientele and is licensed in all 50 states. Clients who own high-end homes typically have additional insurance costs: jewelry, art, furnishings, vehicles, boats and other residences. Lang’s products include high v a l u e h o m e o w n e r s insurance, waterfront homeowners insurance, Private Fleet Auto insurance, worldwide excess liability insurance, collections and valuable articles, watercraft insurance, flood insurance, commercial and
current conditions. “The weather patterns are crazy,” Lang said. For owners of coastal properties, “the entire scenario has changed.” That makes securing the adequate amount of insurance a daunting task for some agents. “I’m the owner of the agency. When you call here you are dealing with me.” Lang said he will “outbroker” his competitors, and with 35 years of experience he knows
how to get the job done. “Average people may be able to get away with conventional, mass marketed insurance; but when you’ve reached a higher level, your assets should be insured with specialized insurance companies with products targeted to high net worth individuals,” Lang said. Flanders Locale Serves Kids This Summer By Emily Toy
East End youth, fear not. If you’re hungry, you’ve got help. The David Crohan Center in Flanders will serve as a location for Island Harvest Food Bank’s Summer Food Service Program, according to a press release from Epoch 5 Public Relations. The action is in response to an increased demand to supply supplemental food to children who rely on school lunch programs, but may not get enough to eat when school is in summer recess. Since 1992, Island Harvest has grown to become the largest hunger relief organization in the region, feeding and supporting 316,000
Long Islanders annually, ultimately changing the lives of millions. This year alone, more than 175,000 meals are expected to be served to about 4000 children participating in the program. There are 55 locations across Long Island participating, including the Flanders locale, this summer. The program began on June 29. “For most children, summertime is a relaxed, fun and worry-free time of year, but that is not the case for many,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO, Island Harvest. “Sadly, a good amount of children living on Long Island who rely on school lunch programs experience stress and anxiety and empty
stomachs come summertime.” Under SFSP, meals will be provided to all children 18 years old and under, without charge, at designated sites. According to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief organization, 62 percent of client households with children under the age of 18 were participating in the National School Lunch Program, but only 14 percent reported having a child participate in a summer feeding program that provides free food when school is out. “This underscores the critical importance of summer feeding programs, while emphasizing the
need for increased awareness of these vital initiatives,” Dresner added. According to Hunger in America from 2010, about 283,700 people on Long Island received emergency food annually. That’s about 65,000 people a week. The study went on to say about 39 percent of Long Islanders who received emergency food were children under 18 years old.

Code Enforcement, Cops Stepping Up
On the heels of abject complaints from Montauk residents under siege by the volume of heavy partying summer visitors, and with residents due to make their case to the town board as The Independent went to press yesterday, this week, East Hampton Town officials reported activity in the East Hampton Town Code Enforcement Department is up significantly over the same period last year. During the first half of 2015, the Department opened 1076 cases, a marked jump over the 621 cases opened during the first six months of 2014, according to the Department’s 2015 Half-Year Report. “The 2015 Half-Year Report shows a notable increase in enforcement activity in the Town of East Hampton,
highlighting the Town’s continued improvement in enforcing the Town Code, to the benefit of all East Hampton residents,” said Supervisor Larry Cantwell. The number of cases Code Enforcement resolved also increased significantly over the same period: 818 in the first half of 2015, compared with 331 in the first half of 2014. The number of cases resolved regarding contractor license violations jumped to 94 from 42, and the number of cases resolved regarding housing violations increased to 139 from 84. The department successfully closed 421 cases so far this year through voluntary compliance versus 40 at this point last year. David Betts, the Town’s Public Safety Division Administrator,

New reliance on improved technology, such as our online complaint form and vehicle laptop computers, has helped us solve cases more efficiently.” East Hampton Town Police also reported on their efforts, with a
post on their Facebook page on Sunday. It listed overnight action from Saturday to Sunday: 37 town ordinance, 16 parking, 24 traffic citations issued and five arrests made. “EHTPD officers working hard to keep peace and order, and improve safety and quality of life. Code Enforcement Officers, Fire Marshal, and Marine Patrol all out working as well,” the PD’s post says.

Soldier Ride
Continued from page 8. Chris Carney, at the time a bartender at the Talkhouse in Amagansett, rode a bike across the country to raise money for The Wounded Warrior Project, an organization dedicated to helping injured service members. The next year, two such warriors, soldiers injured while serving in Iraq, joined him on the 4000mile sojourn. Over the years and over the miles other warriors and supporters joined Carney as Soldier Ride expanded, with rides now held nationally and internationally. Carney’s been acknowledged by every president in office since the rides began. Stephen Talkhouse compadre Nick Kraus documented the ride from its inception. This Friday night, Welcome To Soldier Ride, a film by Kraus and Matt Hindra, tells the story of the ride through the first 10 years of its history: its impact on participants and the communities they sacrificed for. for free in Amagansett Square at 8 PM. Ganga’s been feeding wounded warriors and their supporters since Carney first arrived home from the maiden cross-country ride. “We did the first barbecue at the American Legion,” he recalled. It takes weeks to prepare for each year’s event. Ganga has never actually seen the race; he’s too busy troubleshooting and putting out fires. On ride day, “Everybody looks for the 6’3’ big Italian guy with the word ‘boss’” on his back,” he joked. He doesn’t get to see the festivities, but the effort is still rewarding. “At the end of the day, you feel like you’ve done something. When you look at somebody’s face and they say ‘thank you,’ that’s something. Some of these people have given everything . . . three and four limb amputees, it breaks your heart.” Asked why he would choose to commit so much energy to the Soldier Ride, Ganga responded simply, asking, “Why wouldn’t you?”

RICK’S SPACE In The Bag
If you are like me you’ve dropped at least one bag of groceries in the last couple of weeks because the bag broke. In many local communities the powers-that-be have passed laws making plastic bags illegal. They’ve been replaced at supermarkets with flimsy paper bags. The rationale is that plastic bags end up in the water and get caught in outboard motor propellers, which are now an endangered species. So we use paper bags. My question

is, “What about the trees?” Time was when we had to drastically curtail using paper to save the trees from extinction. What happened, did we get an influx of illegal trees come in from across the border? I can see the rationale, though. If I had to pick one or the other I’d side with the propellers every time. I mean, how would we know a Timex watch takes a licking and keeps on ticking if we didn’t have propellers? Of course, plastic bags are also dangerous to fish, who ingest them thinking they are . . . well, plastic bags. So supermarkets do not use plastic bags anymore. But if you walk to the back of the store there is a whole selection of, you guessed it, fish. And they are dead, too, just like the ones that eat plastic bags. I submit the more environmentally correct thing to do is to buy our groceries, bag them in plastic, throw the bags in the ocean,

pick up the dead fish that swallowed it, and eat the fish. That’s Zero Carbon Footprint, folks. Ride the Green wave on Mother Earth. At at least one luxury market they answer to a higher power. There, everything is triple wrapped and the fish, trees, and propellers be damned. I went in the other day to buy clams. Actually, just one clam, to see what would happen. “Could I have one Littleneck, please?” “One pound?” “Just one.” “One pound?” “One clam.” Ever polite, the guy scooped up a single clam, along with five pounds of ice, of course, and weighed it all. A very respectable $13, one of the cheapest items I’ve ever bought there. Then he wrapped it in wax paper. Then he put the wax paper into a plastic bag. Then he used a plastic twisty tie to secure it. Then I went to pay for it. “Would you like a bag,” the young lady asked. “Of course,” I answered. “Do I look like some kind of savage?” Naturally, there is always a goody two shoes (why aren’t there any goody one shoes?) who will try to rationalize every dopey law local politicians make. I asked one of our elected officials about the ban. “The quality of our bays is deteriorating. I’m sure you can see for yourself.” “Well no, I don’t,” I replied. “It’s not as clean as it used to be.” How do I tell this clueless fellow the truth? I have a swimming pool! Hello? dude. And you can keep your Horseshoe Crabs and Portuguese Man of Wars, too. I shove the plastic bags I bring home between my refrigerator and the kitchen wall. Once the repair guy came and we had to pull out the refrigerator. There were bags everywhere. “You sure have a lot of plastic bags!” he remarked. “Yeah,” I said. “I used to keep my propellers there but they are almost extinct now.” Let’s tell it like it is. It’s not the paper bags, it’s that they are so damned flimsy. One local store that I won’t name, even charges a nickel for the privilege of carrying out the food I bought there in a bag. In other words, supermarkets have taken an environmentally noble program and done it on the cheap, so the whole spirit of doing something good has been sullied by bags that rip apart every time you put a couples six-packs . . . er, make that a quart of almond milk . . . in one of them. Well, the buck stops here. Hmm . . . maybe given the recent spate of deer slaughters I shouldn’t say that. I will no longer kill trees. Say it with me. I WILL NO LONGER KILL TREES! I will take my groceries, and I will carry them to my car in my own bare hands. Then, I will go to the luxury market and buy one, and only one clam (because two or more is a Posillipo). Then I will place the groceries in a giant plastic shopping bag from one of the luxury markets and I will prance (because I’m a little light on my feet) down Newtown Lane and shout, “Look at me! Look at me! I bagged my groceries in plastic!” Go ahead, copper — make my day.

A Breath Of Fresh Air When Maria Moore was elected Mayor of Westhampton Beach Village last year, a few critics groused that she intended to take her full $25,000 salary. Her predecessor, Conrad Teller, had worked for half that since 2010. The inside joke, of course, was the same people who have cost taxpayers millions over the years had suddenly turned cost conscious, as if begrudging Moore her pay would make the excesses of the past go away. The grousers, as it turned out, were the old guard that helped turn Westhampton Beach into a laughingstock: a village police department overstocked with incompetent, scandal-plagued officers, and an overpaid Police Chief, Ray Dean. Moore won comfortably as a reform candidate and in one year she has done more for the village than previous administrations have done in decades. The dominoes began to fall quickly. Dean, without Teller to grease the skids, resigned immediately – pocketing over $400,000 in cash for unused sick and personal days and so on, in addition to a fat retirement package and health plan. Moore than began a thorough study of the police department, and even discussed eliminating it altogether and contracting with Southampton Town for police services. Though it didn’t pan out, the message was sent loud and clear: this reform candidate means business. Now, the landscape of the board has changed further, with more reform on the agenda. After Rob Rubio and Brian Tymann were sworn in, they joined with Moore to push through a key reform, one every municipality should do as well: they eliminated health and dental benefits not only for themselves, but for former board members and mayors who were also collecting lifetime benefits – those with 10 years of service or more. The cost? Almost $24,000 a year per person, a staggering amount for a modest village. Worse, as we all know, the cost of those benefits go up every year. So Moore, demonized for taking her full salary, voted to take a pass on benefits that would have cost taxpayers twice as much had she opted to take half pay and keep the benefit package. Many residents don’t realize that members of many municipal boards – and we are talking planning, zoning and the like, as well as elected boards, get hidden perks. It was why board appointees have become patronage positions and are often awarded along party lines. And by the way, some school board members, those “selfless volunteers” who supposedly serve to give to the community, are also getting perks of one kind or another. Municipalities stuck in the status quo tend to empower the old guard. Taxpayers might well heed the lesson learned in Westhampton Beach: electing the right person can make all the difference.

real protection to an area very vulnerable to inundation during heavy storms, I finally found out why. At the July 2nd Public Hearing for the Management Plan for the South Flora Nature Preserve, the Committee for Public Access (CFAR) testified that they wanted parking installed on the South Flora back dune area adjacent to Dolphin Drive not for preserve access but for beach access. Then, they revealed their real intent for our community and, potentially, the entire town of East Hampton. The CFAR spokesman announced that after they secured Dolphin Drive that Marlin Drive was next! Why must the Town Board deliberate on what is clearly a “no brainer” decision you may ask? Because those who want this parking have continually threatened to run any that oppose them out of office. The precedent that will soon be set at Dolphin Drive will decide whether East Hampton will be a town of share houses or one in which neighborhoods can continue to thrive. NORMAN EDWARDS

him president of his organization. In the following 15 years his father’s firm and now Donald’s grew and in 1980 it was made Junior’s completely his own as The Trump Organization. By 1990 however it was so mismanaged by his astute guidance and judgment as to drive the Trump Organization, into $5 billion (by some estimates $8 billion) in debt. A bailout deal by some 70 banks combined with governmental aid managed to deter bankruptcy and abject failure. From the moment of his birth, Trump was assured success. The large inheritance left to him by his father, coupled with the contributions of benefactors and the U.S. government made his grooming for wealth almost inevitable regardless of his innate tendency to counteract the obvious. Nevertheless, Mr. Lucky Loudmouth, short of dislocating his shoulder due to patting himself on the back in the process of declaring himself as that “Self Made Man,” has garnered a following of those who enjoy listening to his bravado and imagining themselves included (read deluded) as part of it. I even read of someone blaming Macy’s (the department store) for his failures, forgetting Univision, Serta, NBC, ESPN, PGA, FAA, NYC, on and on through the rest of the alphabet, those wishing to detach themselves from Delusional Donald. CPF Law Additions Proposed By Kitty Merrill
“We cannot lose sight of the fact that the degradation of water quality is a degradation of our community, our quality of life and the economy we have here in East Hampton. We’ve got to do everything we can to ensure our water quality is the best,” said Supervisor Larry Cantwell. During a recent work session Kevin McAllister of Defend H2O applauded the East Hampton Town Board for its effort toward developing a wastewater management plan. It’s a work in progress, he acknowledged. McAllister, whose work as a clean water advocate gives him a chance
to review wastewater systems and sewer districts, encouraged the town board to “really prioritize” hot spot areas like Ditch Plains in Montauk. The environmentalist also asked board members to take a broad-based view when it comes to addressing built structures and existing septic systems. Cantwell credited town planning and preservation efforts with preventing the types of water quality issues that plague areas upisland. Still, he said, officials are becoming “keenly aware” of legacy issues with existing cesspools and septic systems are contributing to
pollution. “We’re going to need a comprehensive approach and that’s the approach we’re taking,” he told McAllister. Sewer districts need to be the last resort, Cantwell opined. Continued focus on prevention through preservation and planning are the way to go. But what about aging septics and cesspools that threaten water quality? The supervisor announced plans to come forward with a proposal that deals with legacy systems and continues to allow individual systems to be built, provided they take advantage of new technology

and new standards, like ensuring safe setbacks from vulnerable water bodies. New legislation related to an old tool could help. Senator Ken LaValle and Assemblyman Fred Thiele have successfully passed an extension of the Community Preservation Fund legislation in Albany. It awaits the governor’s signature. If approved, the legislation extends the CPF’s expiration to 2050. The bill includes an amendment that, if approved by voters via referendum, allows 20 percent of CPF revenue to be devoted to water quality projects. Cantwell noted that finances are a “major obstacle” to the improvement of home and business septic systems. “A funding source that’s identifiable on a reoccurring basis – that’s going to go a long way towards resolving the issues we have in the Town of East Hampton.” The Community Preservation Fund was approved by voters in 1998. It garners revenue through a two-percent tax on most real estate transactions. In its original iteration, the CPF was created and approved by voters to provide the five East End towns with money for open space purchases. Voters have approved extensions of the law twice so far. The LaValle/ Thiele proposal will be subject to a vote by residents in each town.

Saturday evening 300 Hedge Clippers activists crashed a $5000-per-plate fundraiser for Governor Cuomo at the waterfront home of hedge fund billionaire Dan Loeb in East Hampton Village. Loeb has been accused of funding efforts to prevent higher taxes on the rich, to privatize public schools, and to block wage increases, harming working people in the process. Cuomo has aligned himself with Loeb on some issues. Participants at the event handed out golden hedge clippers as “inequality awards” while large aerial Hedge Clippers banners flew above Loeb’s estate during the protest.

You’re not really parking in front of a fire hydrant if you just park in the street instead of the spot, right? Wrong! While we wouldn’t ever wish a fire on anybody, it might be cool to see the firetruck bash the offending vehicle out of the way, or, do like they do in Manhattan: bust the windows out and thread the hose through.

ELIH To Join Forces With SBU Last week Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport announced its decision to affiliate with Stony Brook University Hospital subject to the successful completion of the definitive agreement and all regulatory and other approvals. “Our Board has deliberated over the past several months and has focused on a strategic partner that will assist ELIH in fulfilling its mission and that will best address the evolving healthcare needs of our community. We believe by joining Stony Brook University Hospital, the stewardship of the Hospital’s mission to care for the residents of the North Fork of Long Island is in good hands,” states Thomas E. Murray, Jr. Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Eastern Long Island Hospital. “While the delivery of healthcare and especially hospital care is rapidly changing, becoming a part of Stony Brook University Hospital will allow ELIH to make this complex transition while continuing to carry out our longtime promise to the community. “The hospital has been here for

Short Bus Fire County Police are looking into the cause of a bus crash on Sunrise Highway Sunday morning that temporarily halted traffic. T h e “ S h o r t B u s t r o l l e y,” reportedly a party bus headed to the Hamptons, was seen with smoke billowing from the front. The driver pulled over in the eastbound lane near Exit 59 and all passengers were evacuated safely. Hampton Bays Cyclist Hit Southampton Town Police responded to a report that a man was injured and laying on the side of the road on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays Saturday morning at about 8:30. They ascertained the man had been on a bicycle when he was hit by an unidentified motor vehicle heading east. Police did not release the name of either individual but the victim was said to be recovering at Southampton Hospital. Shotgun Blast In Mattituck A Mattituck man was accused of unloading a shotgun at another person Saturday night. Southold Town Police said Douglas Cooper, 67, took action during “a landlord tenant dispute” that occurred at 2200 Breakwater Road in Mattituck. Cooper was charged with menacing, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon. He is reportedly a member of the Mattituck School Board. Phony C Note Suffolk County police said last week that a man used a counterfeit $100 bill at a Bridgehampton “game” store back on May 11. The man was about 5-feet-6-inches tall and weighed about 150 pounds. There is a $5000 reward for information leading to his arrest – call 1-800220-TIPS.

Montauk Moves Into Title Picture
By Rick Murphy
Montauk, perched precariously on the edge of the playoff picture, went on the road Saturday for a critical doubleheader against the North Fork Ospreys and came home looking very much like a contender. The Mustangs won both games by 3-2 margins and as a result moved into third place with an 18-15 mark, good for a game and half lead over the Ospreys (16-16-1). Montauk was trailing in the opener until Noah Shulman belted a two-run homerun, and then Dylan Mouzakes shut the door. The sophomore, who attends Pace, went
the distance, allowing only one hit after the fourth inning while striking out seven. His North Fork counterpart Brendan Satran was nearly as good in defeat. In the second half Mustang fell behind again. This time Chris Russo delivered, singling in two runs to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead, and that proved to be the final score. Ross Weiner and Tyler Kardas handled the mound action for the Mustangs. Weiner went the first 5 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, and Kardas recorded the final four outs for his fourth save. Sag Harbor and Southampton,

Bucks, alone at the top of the league standing with a sterling 22-11 mark, knocking off Riverhead 9-5. Eddie Haus had a day to remember – he homered, doubled and drove in three to lead the firstplace Bucks to their third straight victory, downing Riverhead. Haus’ homer, his first of the summer, cleared the fence in left to give the Bucks a 3-1 lead in the fifth. With two more hits, he raised his average to a league-best .369 and also moved into the top five in the league in RBI. Jack Machonis (Stetson) and Mark Flynn (Columbia) also had two hits and two RBI to help the Bucks cause. The victory gave Shelter Island a one-and-a-half-game bulge over Westhampton for the league’s top spot. Riverhead dropped to 12-22.
both mired in slumps, both needed a victory badly when the faced off Saturday. But Sag Harbor wanted it more. After falling behind by a run in the ninth, Sag Harbor bounced back with two runs of its own, on a walkoff single by James Clements. Joey Sanchez singled and advanced to third when Matt McCann (Fairleigh Dickinson) doubled on a 1-0 pitch. Clements found a pitch he liked and brought them both home with a single, his second and third RBI of the afternoon. McCann went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, while Clements, Sanchez, and Nico Maida (Long Beach State) had two hits apiece. The Whalers are 14-19-1 while Southampton dropped to 13-19-2. FANTASY SP By Skippy Brown

RTS
Ranking The Wide Receivers The explosion of superproductive wide receivers was documented in this space last week (see.www.indyeastend.com). As NFL teams pass more often, more wide receivers are catching more passes for more yards and, of course, more fantasy points. You MUST have at least two wide receivers to compete in Fantasy Football. You’ll probably take three in the first five rounds of the draft – many Fantasy players are taking wide receivers in the first round, and some are taking two wide receivers in the first two rounds. It is generally conceded the best Fantasy receiver is Antonio Brown for Pittsburgh. He set an NFL record with 122 receptions good for 1570 yards and 12 touchdowns. More impressive, he hasn’t missed a game in two years. He’s very consistent as well, so you know he is going to get points for you every week. That’s what makes him our top selection. Want to gamble? Odell Beckham caught 91 passes for 1305 yards and 12 touchdowns and only played 12 games – four fewer than Brown. That means that on a per game basis Beckham was the most productive wide receiver in history! The trouble is those four games he missed – he had a hamstring problem, and it’s already acting up again. We need our pick to play week in and week out. Feeling lucky, punk? Grab him. Dez Br yant and Demar yius Thomas are next in the pecking order. Both enjoy pass-orientated offenses that consistently target them, and both can go up and get it with the best of them. Pencil in Julio Jones for the fifth spot. As long as Jordy Nelson has Aaron Rodgers to throw to him he is going to put up Fantasy numbers. T.Y. Hilton is Andrew Luck’s top target, so he should put up some good numbers. One guy we really love is Alshon Jeffrey, a big, physical receiver who will be the man in Chicago now that Brandon Marshall has been traded. Then there are the reliable ones like Calvin Johnson – the top receiver in the past two seasons. He’s been slowed by injuries, so that is a red flag. Still, he has tremendous upside. Randall Cobb and Jeremy Maclin fit the bill as
well. It takes wide receivers a couple years to get acclimated. Some guys are ready to make the leap from starting wide receiver to elite wide receiver. Snagging these guys before their ascension is the trick to winning Fantasy Football. These include, Mike Evans, DeAndre Hopkins, Kelvin Benjamin (Carolina) and Sammy Watkins. Any one of these four could end up in the top five overall. Then there are the guys like Johnson who were elite only a
www.indyeastend.com
year or two ago but are declining because of injuries and advanced age. These also include A.J. Green, Vincent Jackson, Andre Johnson, and Steve Smith. These are savvy veterans who retain excellent skill sets who are still capable of blowing open a game. All of these receivers will get picked in your Fantasy leagues in the first half-dozen rounds or so. To win, though, you need to identify sleepers – guys who will be available in the later rounds who are primed for a break out season. Consider Jarvis Landry of Miami – his quarterback Ryan Tannehill is ready for a big season, and the team’s top receiver, Mike Wallace, is in Minnesota now. That means Landry will become Tannehill’s top target. Jordan Matthews is a pass-

happy offense (Philadelphia) that traded away top receiver DeSean Jackson. Yes, Maclin is still there, but there will be plenty of footballs to go around.

A hand very similar to this one was played recently at the Water Mill Bridge Club. Not every South opened the bidding as this South did. Some opened 1H and some passed. But this South fared well because he did not have enough points to bid spades at the two level if responder bid 2D or 2C. With 13 points, including length, South should open as he did, 1S.

The opening 1S bid was very positive for North who used the Jacoby 2N bid to show four trumps and 13+ points. In fact, North saw slam as the final bid after South showed a void or singleton in clubs. North used Blackwood (4N) to find that his team had 3 aces. A small slam was a reasonable bid. After winning the king of hearts, West shifted to the two of diamonds which South won with the 10. He trumped a small heart in dummy and came back to his hand with the ace of diamonds. He next led a small trump towards dummy and had good luck when the singleton queen came from West. The rest was routine. South’s opening 1S bid was the key to getting a good result. If he started with 1H, he might have a difficult second bid if North had bid 2C or 2D. If North had not supported his spade bid, South could next bid 2H. Any questions or comments can be sent to gaman13927@aol.com. We are now registering private groups for fall lessons. Coast Guard Auxiliary News By Vincent Pica
Commodore, First District, Southern Region (D1SR) United States Coast Guard
Lightning If you have been boating more than 5 minutes, it is quite possible that you have left the dock under fair skies and come back being chased by the Wrath of God . . . This column is about that. Lightning Facts And Myths The only natural disaster that kills more Americans than lightning is floods. That’s right. Hurricanes, mudslides, forest fires and tornadoes all come in behind lightning. And what is amazing to me is that you can go to a NASA website, particularly given the intro above, NASA-Lightning, and find that lightning avoids the ocean. This proves once again that there are lies, damn lies and statistics. Lightning may not hit the ocean often – the vast, almost limitless ocean that covers threequarters of the surface of the planet – but it sure likes near-coastal environments. That’s where we are! We’ve all grown up counting to five or six between thunder claps to determine how far away the storm is and whether it is getting closer or not. Lightning, which can hit as far away as 20 miles from its source-thunder-cloud, is so dangerous that it just makes no sense to try to
outwit it. That being the case, are there any preventative tools? Well, now that you ask, there is something called a Lightning Detector. They have been used by the military and aircraft operators for years. Now, for $200-$500, you can get a portable one for the boat. “I need a lightning detector? I can see it!” Not if it is 20 miles away and you need to know if it is between you and home. Unlike metal boats, fiberglass or wood boats, unfortunately, don’t conduct electricity well so “side flash” occurs, which makes the electric charge jump around looking for good conductors. Take a look in the mirror. We are good conductors. What To Do Well, not getting hit in the first place is the best advice. If the weather forecast is bad, forget about trying to get out there to take advantage of the predators starting to “feed up” (they can sense the lowering pressure via their lateral lines) before the storm. It isn’t worth it. But, if you are out there, what do you do when you see a storm approaching?
www.indyeastend.com
NOAA says: Get out of the water if you are swimming off the transom. It’s a great conductor of electricity. If caught in a boat, crouch down in the center away from metal hardware. Don’t stand in puddles of water. (Ya’ think?) Let me add a couple of thoughts: Life jackets on everyone! Disconnect all electronics that aren’t essential to getting home. Electrical tape over the exposed leads so nothing climbs up the wire to the gear. If you can see the edges of the storm, and the center of the storm is between you and home, run at speed at a 90-degree angle to the storm and try to go around it. Squalls can be as deadly as a major blow but they are smallish and can be avoided. If the storm covers the sky from horizon to horizon, say a prayer* (I carry one on the outside of my sea journal) and head in at speed. Get on the radio and let someone know where you are, where you are headed and at what speed you can make. Check in every 15 minutes. After 30 minutes of not checking in, someone needs to start the “rescue starts now” clock. It would be great to have individuals aboard who are competent in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid. Many individuals struck by lightning or exposed to excessive electrical current can be saved with prompt and proper artificial respiration and/or CPR. There is no danger in touching

persons after they have been struck by lightning. No joke. Some people fear that. No one has CPR training? Call the American Red Cross and get a course under your keel. If a boat has been, or is suspected of having been struck by lightning (overnight on a mooring), check out the electrical system and the compasses to insure that no damage has occurred. A number of years ago, I dinghied out to my son’s 17-foot Seahunt, sitting on her mooring east of Gunning Point. As I approached, I noticed that the bow-mounted nav lights were broken. “Son of a gun, some yahoo hit the boat last night. Must have been drunk as a skunk!” Then I noticed some of the other electronics had scorch marks and cracked glass covers. The light went on! I realized that this must be a leftover from a storm that had come through the night before. Scratching my head, I lifted the cover to check the fuel tank. Looking down, I saw that the sender wire that runs from the cockpit gauge back to the fuel tank was completely scorched – to within an inch of the fuel tank itself. We re-wired the boat and repeated our prayer: * Dear God, thy sea is so great and my boat is so small. Protect me . . . BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@ aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources department, which is in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing . . .”
