WHEN I’M KING Many of us, when we can’t sleep, stare at the ceiling and play the “When I’m King” game, where we think we could solve our problems and all the world’s problems if only we had the title of King. How do you think Donald Trump started? This is my version: When I’m King: Women who push baby carriages into the street against the light, while they look in the wrong direction because they are too busy talking on their cell phones, will be ticketed for child abuse. The fine will be $5,000. When I’m King: Potential hipbreaking bicycles going the wrong way on a one-way street will be impounded by the police and not returned. When I’m King: Donald Trump will be muzzled. When I’m King: Bill Cosby will be sentenced to spend the rest of his life in a jail cell being crushed by Joyce “Tillie” Mitchell. This is cruel and unusual punishment but he deserves it.
When I’m King: I will put an end to people blinding pilots by pointing lasers at planes. Last week 11 lasers were aimed at planes filled with our loved ones landing at Newark Airport. This is attempted murder. When the first person who is caught pointing a laser at a plane is put away in jail for five years or more, you’ll see the problem go away. When I’m King: Bill de Blasio will be impeached as mayor of New York City. Hell, if we can impeach a president, why can’t we impeach a tin-horn, commie, pinko, bedwetting freak like de Blasio. It comes down to this: Bill de Blasio is the best mayor bribe money can buy, and he’s such a putz he can’t even get corruption right. He was bought and paid for by the teachers’ union and he came out against charter schools, which will help some of the poor black and Hispanic children – whom de Blasio claims to love – get a superior education and get better jobs in their future. Instead he attempted to sentence them to a public school education that can’t come up to the quality of charter schools as long as the teachers’ union protects some

second-rate teachers who should have been thrown out of the public school system years ago. He was bought and paid for by the real estate interests who wanted to take over the valuable buildings which stable the horses that pull the hansom cabs through the park, and are such a New York treasure. De Blasio wanted to, and still wants to, ban the carriages. He was bought and paid for by the taxi fleet owners who gave him almost half a million dollars to impose a moratorium on Uber cars. Uber is one of the best things that’s happened to this city’s minority population and de Blasio knows it. This is shameful. At least 60 percent of Uber drivers are black or Hispanic. The service is great. The cars are clean and they will pick up in any neighborhood. In his sell-out to the taxi fleet, de Blasio is punishing the people who elected him, the minority-heavy outer borough people who use the service and the minority drivers who are making a great living with Uber. Bill de Blasio will destroy life in this city in the next two years. Let’s dump him now. When I’m King: I will force Barack Obama to come to his senses and figure out that his “Let’s make a deal with Iran and their leader Ayatollah ‘Death To America’ Khamenei” strategy is as dangerously insane as the Ayatollah is. Obama is about 0 for 8 in the Middle East. If he were a baseball player he would have been benched by now. Obama has been wrong on

Benghazi (he thought it was a reaction to a video). He insists on not identifying Islamic terrorism as though if he doesn’t use their name they will shrink and die. He chooses to call their killings and bombings in the United States “workplace violence.” He said he would eliminate ISIS because they were a “minor league” group. They grow stronger and we grow weaker every day. They’re winning. They won’t stop until we’re all dead. He thought he could stop Syria by establishing a “red line” that they were forbidden to cross. That failed big and hundreds of thousands have died. Now he wants another swing. Iran will shuck and jive the world on inspections and they will have a nuclear weapon in a few years. Before you write in and tell me why this deal with Iran is the best we can do and we should trust Obama on it, tell me if you’re willing to trust your kids’ and grandkids’ lives on it. I’m not. When I’m King: I will ask Barack Obama, who is sitting down with American prisoners for their input on how to revamp the penal system, to help solve our country’s problems with Mexico caused by Donald Trump shooting off his mouth. I will ask Obama to visit Mexico and present a special award to Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. I will call it the “I escaped from a well-run Mexican prison and I didn’t have to boff that moose Joyce ‘Tillie’ Mitchell” Award. El Chapo is not expected to attend the ceremony. Beach Access Threatened
Independent / Emily Toy
By Emily Toy
What many consider the greatest, most appealing feature of the East End, the pristine public beach, is being threatened. And according to Southampton Town Trustee Bill Pell, the issue has been a problem for years. Town beaches stretching from Sagaponack to Southampton Village have been plagued with private beach clubs, as well as homeowners, denying access to the beach for residents and visitors alike.
Claiming that certain marked areas of the beach are for “members only,” club employees have gone as far as calling the police on individuals setting up camp in areas that appear to be owned by the club. Water Mill resident Christian Brashears was asked to move earlier this month, allegedly for being on the Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club’s beach at the end of Ocean Road in Bridgehampton. “We were asked to move to the other side of the sign on Fourth of
July and when we said that is not in fact private property and we were not trespassing, that the beach is public,” Brashears said, “the beach club employee said that is up for debate and he could call the cops.” While passing through said “private property” on Sunday morning, even this reporter was approached by a lifeguard with a stern, “Can I help you?” In an inter view last Friday afternoon, Pell assured, “They can’t do that.” From the bottom of the dune line down to the water’s edge is public property, he explained. According to the trustee, it’s been an ongoing battle for public beach access in Southampton Town. The trustees have been in litigation over this specific issue for years, he added. In 2007, in an effort to up the ante in the ongoing battle for continued public beach access, the Southampton Association of Beach Access presented a check of $15,000 to the town trustees. This was to be used to defray legal expenses the town would have been likely to incur defending itself against the many lawsuits brought by homeowners and other privatized

entities. Locals are in an uproar over the issue, with many taking to social media to express their concerns. There’s also Southampton Association for Beach Access, a group of locals formed to protect the rights to use the beach in the way it’s been done for generations. Currently SABA has over 1600 individuals dedicated to protect and care for the beaches. “The right to use these beaches existed before the houses on Meadow Lane were built,” said James R. McLauchlen, former president of SABA. “You don’t move into an area where something already exists – you know it exists, and then try to outlaw it?” Citizens for Access Rights, another group of East End residents and families who respect and enjoy the local beaches, is a not for profit organization reminding that beach access is being threatened. Pell said if any beachgoer was threatened, by police or otherwise, that the Southampton Town Bay Constables would issue them a summons. “They can’t do that,” he said. “It’s totally out of control.” Still, during a visit to the shore at the end of Ocean Road in Bridgehampton recently, he found an impromptu barricade of umbrellas and a sign declaring the space “private property.”

Limo Driver Made ‘A Dangerous Move’
F
THE
2015
Opening Night Gala Preview
HAMPTON DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE PRESENTED BY
TO BENEFIT
By Kitty Merrill
An eyewitness headed east approaching Depot Lane saw the entire crash, he said. He saw the limo make the U-turn and he saw the red truck headed west. He saw the impact and he described to the police, the limo turning right in front of the truck. Turning right in front of the truck. At a press conference in Southold Monday afternoon, District Attorney Tom Spota revealed the existence of an eyewitness and, after 36 hours of speculation that included a multitude of damning remarks about the pickup driver, Steven Romeo, on online media platforms, it appears the accident Saturday evening in Cutchogue may not have been his fault. It was about 5:15 on Saturday evening when the limo carrying eight passengers – young upisland women out for a day of fun in wine country – made a right turn from Vineyard 48 onto Route 48. It drove up to Depot Lane and made a U-turn in front of Romeo’s truck, which broadsided the hired car. Four young women were killed, three died at the scene and one died shortly afterwards at Peconic Bay Medical Center. Four more passengers, plus Romeo and the limo driver were taken to the hospital for treatment. Romeo was arrested for drunk driving based on the observation of officers on the scene. His blood alcohol test hadn’t been completed as of this writing. A resident of Peconic, Romeo, 55, was arraigned Sunday at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport and ordered held in lieu of $500,000 cash bail or $1 million bond. He was still hospitalized as of Monday afternoon. The four women who were killed were identified hours after the crash. They are: Brittany Schulman, 23, and Lauren Baruch, 24, both of Smithtown; Stephanie Belli, 23, of Kings Park; and Amy Grabina, 23, of Commack. The injured women are Joelle Dimonte, 25, of Elwood, Melissa Angela Crai, 23, of Scarsdale,

Alicia Arundel, 24, of Setauket, and Olga Lipets, 24, of Brooklyn, plus the limo driver, Carlos Pino, 58, of Bethpage. Interviewed at the hospital, Pino said he didn’t see Romeo’s truck. As online news accounts of the crash circulated Saturday, Romeo was accused of leaving the scene of the accident. On Monday DA Spota dispelled the rumor, stating Romeo admitted to drinking two beers, but would probably not be charged with leaving the scene. According to the DA, Romeo stayed at the scene of the accident for about 15 minutes before walking about 1000 feet down the street, climbing a fence and walking down an embankment. He was ordered to stop, but kept walking for a bit before complying. It was then cops administered field sobriety tests. Spota said whether the leaving the scene charge would be lodged was still a question mark, since Romeo did speak to police and give them information at the outset. The investigation is still in its early stages, said Spota, who was joined at the press conference by Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley, ADA Elizabeth Miller, state police and members of the county’s vehicular crimes unit. Romeo’s blood tests must be processed and an accident reconstruction was underway as of press time. It was noted that it’s legal to make U-turns in the area, but the DA said Southold police regularly issue summonses to motorists, including limousine drivers, for failing to yield the right of way when making U-turns. Pino didn’t show any signs of intoxication at the scene; he hadn’t been drinking, officials said. The tragedy is one area residents have feared since limousines taking visitors to tour wine country first began to arrive on the North Fork’s small country roads. The hired cars can take up two to three lanes when they’re making U-turns, Chief Flatley reported. Pino’s turn was, he said, “a dangerous move.” C

ARE YOU KIDDING? Larry Cantwell? Sylvia Overby? Peter Van Scoyoc? Really?
Angry residents of Montauk took over a scheduled Town Board Meeting. Larry Cantwell asked the following questions:
“Is it time to consider whether the current law permitting outdoor music needs to be changed?” “Has the time come to ban outdoor amplified music?”
“Is it time to ban the consumption of alcohol on our public beaches?” “Should we consider a rental registry law?”
“Should we consider a law, similar to what the town of Southampton adopted, that requires compulsory termination of non-conforming nightclubs providing for amortization period and phase out of such uses?”
THIS IS YOUR PLAN? MAKE MORE LAWS THAT YOU WILL NOT ENFORCE?

Cocaine The East End Drug Task Force, as part of a continuing investigation, collared two Springs men police say were part of a cocaine distribution network in East Hampton. Juan P. Porras of 82 Richardson Avenue, 48,and Jamie RestrepoPerez, 41 of 63 Woodbine Drive were arrested on July 15. Porras were pulled over on Route 114 in East Hampton, town police said. Porras allegedly had six ounces of cocaine on him and was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class II felony as well as three additional felony counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance. Restrepo-Perez was charged with second-degree criminal possession and first-degree criminal sale, both felonies. Police, based on the evidence seized at the traffic stop, executed a warrant at Porras’s residence. “Items were seized,” a police spokesman said, remaining mum about further details as the investigation continues. He acknowledged Porras was a major player in the local cocaine market. Both men were arraigned Thursday. Porras was remanded to Suffolk County Jail in lieu of in $500,000 cash bail or $1 million bond and is scheduled to return to court on July 30. Restrepo-Perez was remanded in lieu of $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond. Rescue At Sea S o u t h a m p t o n To w n B a y Constables were notified that there were swimmers in distress Saturday morning in Peconic Bay near buoy 22. Southold Town constables also responded. The rescuers said they initially found two men were clinging to a buoy – Raymond Hummel and Alex Choi, both 22, and were fished out of the sea with help from a vessel from Sea Tow. The two told police there were three other swimmers still unaccounted for. A search ensued and a short time later a civilian vessel came across the three, later identified as Nathan Reister, 22, John Morales, 19, and Ben Moritz, 21 West of Robins Island. The three were recovered in what police said were “adverse weather conditions.” The five swimmers were returned to shore. Hummel was taken to Southampton Hospital for treatment of lacerations to his leg.

TRO For ‘Great Threats’
Independent / Kitty Merrill
The court has ordered Harbor on West Lake Drive in Montauk to refrain from having more than 68 occupants and to cease operating as a nightclub. By Kitty Merrill
On the heels of a big town meeting that drew a crowd of community members begging for the restoration of order in
Montauk, and as campaign season commences, East Hampton town officials announced the latest in the effort to address code violations in the hamlet and town-wide.
On July 15, State Supreme court granted a temporary restraining order against the Harbor Raw Bar and Lounge on West Lake Drive in Montauk. This order is of particular importance, Super visor Larr y Cantwell said, because it addresses what he called “two of the greatest threats to the health, safety and welfare of the public at large.” The order bars the use of the premises as a nightclub and, under threat of holding the business in criminal contempt if compliance isn’t forthcoming, commands the operators to adhere to a maximum occupancy of 68 people. “This is part of the Town of East Hampton’s effort to address those businesses that have turned their establishments into nightclubs without the requisite approvals and invited overcrowding without

regard to the occupancy limits set forth in state law,” the supervisor said. “This business is not equipped with sprinkler systems and has a maximum occupancy of 68 persons. Since May, it has been cited on multiple, separate occasions with overcrowding and, at times, has had up to 300 people inside.” The TRO is in place until July 30, when parties must return to court. Harbor just opened this spring, rebranded from last year’s iteration. A press release from Harbor describes owner James Willis as a “nightlife impresario” while the restaurant’s website notes, “Sunset brings breath-taking views, marking the kick-off to a night of dancing and debauchery with DJs and live performances into the wee hours.” Earlier this month, town officials reported almost double the number of cases under investigation this year, compared to 2014. Code enforcers also reported resolving more than twice as many cases during the first half of this year as in 2014.

Shinnecock History Through Photographs By Kitty Merrill
Boasting over 100 pages of vintage and recent photographs, Shinnecock Indian Nation is the latest release in the Images of America series published by Arcadia Publishing. Local author, photojournalist, and member of the Shinnecock Nation, Beverly Jenson wrote the book, providing dozens of her own pictures, as well as including more than 200 vintage images, some of which have never been published before. Even locals who think they know plenty about the “People of the Shore” can find tons of tidbits about the people whose history, Jensen says, may date back “as long as forever.” Famed among the Algonquin tribes for their prowess at crafting wampum, members of the “Always Sovereign” Shinnecock Indian Nation have a rich seafaring heritage. Experts at whaling – using just dugout canoes – during the 18th and 19th centuries Shinnecock were sought after as crew for vessels sailing from East End seaports. Jensen offers several pictures depicting the creation of a dugout
canoe crafted by tribal members in recent years. Shinnecock art – carved decoys, intricate beadwork, jewelry from mussel shells, even traditional cornhusk dolls -- are depicted in a chapter dedicated to “Art for a Purpose.” Portraits of school children and families, many taken by Jensen, with others provided by tribal members and the Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum, abound. Chapters are dedicated to the Women and Men of the Shore. Another chapter is devoted to homes on the reservation, from the traditional dwelling known as a wickiup to more modern houses. Shinnecock houses of worship are pictured as well. The annual Shinnecock Powwow is one of the largest Native American gatherings on the East Coast. Powwow photos dating back to the 1930s show why the annual gathering is so special. The official release date for Shinnecock Indian Nation is Monday, August 3. Arcadia Publishing is the leading

Feeling thirsty? The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons this week announced the return of the Lemonarf Stand, A Club for Kids. Looking to engage kids in the notion of philanthropy, ARF has an official club that involves kids in raising funds for the animals at the ARF Adoption Center. A Lemonarf Stand is just like a regular lemonade stand, only better. ARF has created a Lemonarf Stand free starter kit, designed to help let people know that young participants are an important part of the ARF team, and that all of the money raised will go directly to the care of the animals at ARF. Last summer, the Club for Kids raised $4500 for ARF’s animals. To help make a Lemonarf Stand a big hit in any neighborhood, the kit includes the official Lemonarf Stand homemade lemonade recipe. Kids can use the official recipe or create their own refreshing beverage. It also includes the official Lemonarf Stand barking good cookie recipe. A Lemonarf poster lets everyone

Decry ‘Drastic’ Flounder Quota By Kitty Merrill
“Resounding negative consequences on the entire East Coast that none of us can even begin to comprehend.” That’s what Assemblyman Fred Thiele predicted, should the Mid Atlantic Fishery Management Council follow through with proposed summer flounder reductions the lawmaker describes as “too drastic.” The assemblyman reported that recent federal stock assessments for summer flounder overestimated recruitment, underestimated fishing mortality and overestimated the size of stocks. That data, which many believe to be flawed, prompted the council to drop the annual summer flounder catch by 43 percent. Thiele is among those who question the numbers. Infrequent, inconsistent, and poor quality data are responsible for inaccurate estimates, the assemblyman believes. “If management decisions are being based on reduced data, how can we have any confidence in our decisions?” he queried. Thiele hinted that if a 2014
summer flounder stock assessment was conducted (it wasn’t, due to a lack of federal resources.), fisheries managers would have had greater insights into status of the fishery. Perhaps then, more gradual reductions could have been suggested and implemented over the course of a few years, as opposed to one. Last week, Thiele wrote council members noting his “great concern” with the proposal, urging them to reassess the proposal and allocate enough resources to make sure the data upon which such decisions are made is accurate. Noting that as representative for a region boasting two of New York’s largest fishing ports – Montauk and Hampton Bays – he understands the complexities of fisheries management, Thiele offers an “however.” He wrote, “What is extremely troublesome to me is the continued circumstances federal and state governments find themselves in when insufficient financial resources are allocated to conducting
benchmark and stock assessments.” Year after year, monitoring and data collection efforts are cut back. That results in “infrequent, inconsistent, piecemealed, and poor quality data,” Thiele wrote. N e w Yo r k i s a l r e a d y a t a disadvantage, Thiele reminded. Anglers in this state face lower summer flounder allocations and higher size limits -- they can catch fewer fish that have to be bigger than those caught in waters belonging to other states. Last year, Thiele introduced legislation which directs the State Attorney General to commence legal proceedings against the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the National Marine Fisheries Service challenging New York State’s quota allocation system because the fishing quotas created are based on old, incomplete and faulty information and data. He also sponsored legislation that would establish a small business commercial fishing industry advocate and create a small business commercial fishing
economic development program in the State of New York. The bill, A.7507/S.5444, passed both houses of the legislature and will soon be before Governor Cuomo for consideration. “The commercial fishing industry is part of the historic, cultural, and economic fabric of the East End. We must do everything we can to minimize and carefully balance the impacts on both summer flounder and the fishing industry,” Thiele concluded.

RICK’S SPACE No, I didn’t watch the ESPY awards the other night. I’ve soured on the whole ESPN shtick. It used to be a cool place to catch all the scores and highlights but we have the Internet for that. Now it’s all about smarmy anchormen and the beer-swilling jock morons who think its cool to leave their wives home while they go to a wing joint, drool all over the scantily clad waitresses, and drink 15 Lite beers. One newspaper here, Dan’s, gives out its own “Best Of” awards. Just tell them you’ll stop advertising if your business doesn’t win won. That’ll do it. Dan also gives literary prizes. It’s “only” $25 to submit a story. No less a literary giant than Alec Baldwin gives his thumbs up: he wrote in the latest issue, “Dan’s contributions to the art of writing and the craft of journalism are legendary.” As if to show off, Dan flaunts his brilliance in the very next article we turn to after Baldwin’s testimonial. “Finally, it should be said that golf courses that have bragging rights for the lowest scores of all are not an idication its membership is the best in the game, or that the course is the easiest to play or other hocus pocus,” Dan wrote. Ahh. The master wordsmith plying his craft. An indication of his hocus pocus can be summed up by the fact that he began the second paragraph of a two page story with the word “finally.” The legend grows.

EDITORIAL What To Do About Montauk You don’t have to live in Montauk to know the situation out there has spun out of control; for residents of the hamlet it is a recurring nightmare. The sheer number of late night revelers has overrun the place. There are too many cars, too many drinkers, and too many drunks. What we need is action: what we have thus far unfortunately is political rhetoric. Former Democratic Party boss Bill Taylor, a notorious party henchman, blamed the last Republican administration for the woes, setting up what will surely be a Dem rallying cry as the campaign intensifies. The problem is, this is an all-too familiar refrain by a town board that is notable for one thing and one thing only: nothing. The Wilkinson administration, though perceived as being business-friendly, at least tried to cope with the problem, grappling with legislation that would limit crowds, though it never came to fruition. Incidentally this same strategy is being employed as the Dems to take credit for a quieter airport, forgetting had the previous administration chosen to take FAA grant money the town would have lost all control over the airport until 2021 and maybe beyond. Code enforcement then was persistent if not effective – some nightclubs were hit with scores of violations that would mean thousands of dollars of fines if convicted. The violators shrugged them off and used the legal system to prolong their court battles, allowing them to continue to pack in the crowds during the summer. The Wilkinson board was ridiculed when it brokered a deal that allowed revelers to park at the Montauk Playhouse for a fee. In retrospect, the idea might have helped beleaguered property owners near at a local hotspot who couldn’t even get in and out of their own neighborhood. The same nightclubs are doing business now, as then. Hundreds of people turned out to complain last week. Community members trotted out the old “rental registry” rap as a way to improve the Montauk situation. Been there, done that. No one wants it. Illegal renters are not at the core of the trouble in Montauk. There have always been group rentals there, as there are all over the East End. And there is Airbnb. But the bulk of revelers coming to Montauk live in the packed hotels and motels there or are coming in from points west, as far away as Brooklyn and Manhattan, and from elsewhere in the Hamptons. The reason there are so many taxis and cars in and out is because this is by and large a mobile crowd. Advancing a rental registry as a possible solution as akin to Cantwell saying, “I told you so” to Montauk residents when in reality it is a red herring. The Cantwell Administration’s other response to all the complaints was to proudly announce they had obtained a court order to shut down one of the perceived violators: except the one tiny establishment targeted holds all of 68 people, just opened, and the restraining order expires next week. It was a laughable attempt to placate angry residents, but will do absolutely nothing to stem the flow of partyers. There’s that word again: nothing. It’s stubborn behavior, and it is wrong-headed. There is no correlation with the overcrowded conditions in Montauk and the enactment of a rental registry law. The registry was a flop in Southampton and it won’t curtail the crowds in Montauk. It will do nothing more than inconvenience and tax honest homeowners. The real violators obviously will remain under the radar. Once again, the town board is fiddling, this time as Montauk residents burn. Do we really want to stop what’s going on in Montauk? Set up a checkpoint in Napeague, every night, coming and going. Keep it there. Double the amount of police on duty. Have code enforcement officers in every establishment, every week, looking for violations. Take a more proactive stance prosecuting those charged with infractions. Make it so people upisland will find a trip to Montauk so excruciating they will stop coming, period. There are six weeks of hell left. Do something.

By Ed Gifford of CPF monies to purchase the barn and property located at Amagansett Farm, also known as the 555 Property in Amagansett for $10.15 million. If anyone has visited the location it is glaringly apparent that the “barn” structure would not be used as an “agricultural barn” in the traditional sense. The “barn” has a certificate of occupancy for a house and is on the tax roll as a house. Continued on Page 24.

Continued from page 23. This purchase was made in violation of well-established rules that CPF monies should not be used to buy structures other than those that have been deemed “Historic.” The barn certainly does not meet the “Historic” criteria required. This purchase flies in the face of reason and may, again, result in the Town being in the unfortunate position of refunding money to the CPF fund, moving it or using additional CPF revenues to tear it down, as proposed by Sylvia Overby. While this purchase was made over a year ago, I am unaware of any action that has been taken by the town to maintain it. The town estimated the “barn” value to be $3.6 million. Will this property fall into disrepair like others have? As you may know, I am running for Town Board. I made this decision after watching members of this board make poor or no decisions that will, or already have had, negative effects on our residents. Shouldn’t our elected officials have learned their lesson from earlier mistakes that taxpayers are still paying for! It is an embarrassment to all East Hampton residents with the return of the District Attorney’s Office. Elected officials MUST follow the law! Sylvia Overby was the liaison to the CPF Committee when this purchase was discussed, approved and completed. It is shameful she allowed this to happen. MARGARET TURNER, TOWN BOARD CANDIDATE

What do you think about the nuclear treaty with Iran? Anna David It’s absolutely the wrong thing to do. I don’t think they’re going to let anyone inspect. And they want the nuclear bomb and they’re going to get it any way they can. And we are falling for their story.
Louis Rubenfeld The intentions are great coming from the White House. But the Iranians can’t be trusted. So I don’t see how this can work out. After all the Ayatollah is the one who is running the country and he is not to be trusted.
Ellen Krass I’m all for it. It’s the only way to deal with the Middle East at this point in time. And it’s important for us and for our allies to have that commitment in place as a starting point, at the very least.
Ed McDonald Unless you’re there you don’t know the whole story. But it seems to me that it’s better than nothing. I think Iran was a threat and they’re still going to be a threat. But if we can get our foot in the door to inspect then it would be better than what we have now.
Letters & Obit Policy
The Independent publishes all letters to the editor we receive provided they are not libelous and emailed to news@indyeastend.com. We strive to print all obituaries as well but in the event we can’t, they will be published online at www.indyeastend.com. Please try to keep copy under 400 words.
No Idea Dear Rick, This past Sunday afternoon the Chair of the Independence Party showed us a yellow sheet, which was a copy of a petition, my bride and I signed on June 26th for Amos Goodman to run for county legislator on the Independence Party line. At first I refused because we had already signed another Independence Party petition. Amos said the petition was different and that we could sign it. Amos was correct in stating the petition was different Because he was required by election law to have a notary with him when he is collecting petitions. For the record, there was no notary present when he came to our house that day. We have no idea who this notary is who signed her name to the bottom of Amos Goodman’s petition. Everyone knows Elaine Jones has keen knowledge of election law – fore and aft. STUART B. VORPAHL
Inherited Wealth? Dear Editor, I just KNEW that Nicholas Zizelis would not be able to resist the temptation to pontificate about Donald Trump, now that he is a candidate for the Presidency. Mr. Zizelis -- he of the muddled head Left -- walks into a trap, which had a bunch of signs around it (which were designed so that they could only be seen by Leftists and which provide fair warning), each of which say, “Trap ahead. Proceed at your own risk.” About Trump, it must be said that he was born on third base and long ago began to think that he hit a triple. Conceding that point, one must ask of Mr. Zizelis whether inherited wealth should be a disqualifier keeping one from running for the Presidency. Let’s see. Hmmm . . . Oh yeah! JFK, FDR, RFK, et al. So, the thing must be that if one is a Democrat, inherited wealth is OK, but
not if you are a Republican. Makes (Leftist) sense to me! For all his warts, you can’t take from him his prescience. Trump said what he did about Mexicans (with the caveat that “some” of them were criminals -- true) and no sooner did the manufactured outrage die down a bit, than we read about the tragic murder of a young woman in San Francisco -- by a Mexican thug, here illegally, who made his way to that city, expressly because he knew he would be safe, given that SF is a ¨sanctuary city¨ dedicated to the proposition that no illegal immigrant is too illegal to be protected from ICE, by the moron politicians running that place. This senseless murder was virtually predicted by the guy Zizelis chooses to criticize for his inherited wealth. Talk about non sequiturs! I have considerable doubt about Trump’s Continued on Page 25.

Cyanobacteria are naturally present in lakes and streams in low numbers, but, once at higher, more abundant levels, they may produce floating scums on the surface of the water. The water could also take on a paint-like appearance. To r e p o r t a s u s p e c t e d cyanobacteria bloom call 518-4028179.

They’re here. Again. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has reported that cyanobacteria (also known as bluegreen algae) have exceeded bloom criteria in three new bodies of water in Suffolk County. Old Town Pond in Southampton, Kellis Pond in Bridgehampton and Wainscott Pond in, you guess it, Wainscott, are the blooms’ newest victims. Agawam Lake and Mill Pond in Southampton, Maratooka Lake in Mattituck, and parts of Lake Ronkonkoma have persisting bluegreen algae blooms, rest assured. Lake Ronkonkoma (in the Town of Islip) has been closed since July 10 due to such high levels of bacteria. Cyanobacteria are microscopic organisms (phytoplankton) found in marine and fresh water environments. They are usually present in low numbers, but under favorable conditions of sunlight, temperature, and nutrient concentrations, can form massive blooms that discolor the water and often result in scums and floating mats on the water’s surface. Health officials ask residents not to use, swim or wade in these waters and to keep pets and children away from the area. Health officials also warn that extra precautions should be taken to avoid direct exposure to waters at Agawam Lake (at the heart of Southampton Village), as levels of cyanobacteria and associated toxins

Health Tips For The Peak Of Summer By Tim Davis, M.D.
The peak of summer is nearly here. The hottest summer temperatures for the New York City area tend to occur from July 16 to 20, according to 30-year averages calculated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In my 25 years as an emergency medicine physician, I’ve seen the catastrophic effect heat can have on health, and many of the people we see while providing event support in the National Disaster Medical System need treatment for heatrelated illnesses. On average, heatrelated illnesses cause more than
600 deaths every year and from 2001 to 2010 more than 28,000 people were hospitalized for heatrelated illnesses. You can help keep yourself, your family and others around you out of the emergency department by watching for signs of heat stress. People suffering from heat-related illnesses may experience heavy sweating; weakness; cold, pale, and clammy skin; fast, weak pulse; and nausea or vomiting. Early signs include muscle cramps, heat rash and fainting or near-fainting spells. If you believe someone is suffering from a heat-related illness, they
need to move to a cooler location and lie down; apply cool, wet cloths to the body; and sip non-alcoholic fluids. They should remain in the cool location until recovered. Signs that someone might be suffering from the most severe heat-related illness, heat stroke, include a body temperature above 103 degrees Fahrenheit; hot, red, dry or moist skin; rapid and strong pulse; and “altered mental status” that can range from confusion and agitation to possible unconsciousness. If you see someone exhibiting these signs, call 911 immediately.

Help the person move to a cooler environment, reduce the person’s body temperature with cool cloths soaked in ice water especially to head, neck, arm pits and upper legs near the groin area where combined 70 percent of body heat can be lost, or even a cool bath if you can stay with them to ensure they do not drown; and do not give them fluids. Children are especially vulnerable to heat illnesses, and can’t always tell us what is wrong. When it’s hot outside, consider any change in a child’s behavior as heat stress. Additionally, infants and children should never be left in a parked car, even if the windows are down. To help prevent heat-related illness: • Spend time in locations with air-conditioning. • Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids. Good choices are water and diluted sport drinks, unless told otherwise by your doctor. • Choose lightweight, lightcolored, loose-fitting clothing • Limit outdoor activity to morning and evening hours • Protect yourself from the sun by wearing hats with brims and sunscreen As people crank up air conditioning in the peak time of summer, electrical grids can become overwhelmed, causing power outages. In power outages, people who rely on electricity-dependent medical devices, like oxygen concentrators and electric wheelchairs, may need assistance, so check on your neighbors as the temperatures soar. Community organizations and businesses can help local emergency managers and health departments plan for the community’s health needs amid the summer heat – and other emergency situations that can cause power outages – using the new HHS emPOWER Map, located at www.phe.gov. Heat-related illnesses are dangerous, but they are also preventable. Take some time to learn more about ways to beat the heat so that you, your family, and your community can have a safer, healthier summer. If you or someone you know needs help with energy bills, including air conditioning, assistance might be available through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Continued on Page 38.

Ditch Drugs Safely With Big Red Med Box Submitted by STPD Superior Officers Association
Responsible disposal of unwanted, expired and unused medications has been made more convenient for the residents of Hampton Bays and surrounding areas thanks to the generous contribution of the Southampton Town Police Superior Officers Association’s participation in Operation Big Red Med Box. On Saturday, Lieutenant Michael J. Zarro, President of the Association announced that a pharmaceutical collection receptacle, dubbed the Big Red Med Box, is now operational at Liggett Drugs in Hampton Bays. “We need to protect our drinking water from many kinds of potential contaminants, including unwanted medications that might otherwise be flushed into our ground water. Water quality is a major concern,” said Mark Hertz, owner and supervising pharmacist at Liggett Drugs. “The key to a successful medication disposal program is making medication disposal free, confidential and, most importantly, convenient,” he added. Lt. Zarro said, “We need to do our best to keep prescription medications out of the hands of children who might accidentally ingest medications, and out of the hands of people, particularly teens, who might seek to divert medications for non-medical use. Removing unwanted medications that are unnecessarily stored in household medicine cabinets
reduces the chance of prescription drug abuse. “ T h e S o u t h a m p t o n To w n Police have seen an increase in serious motor vehicle accidents in which medications and alcohol are contributing factors. Some medications, especially when combined with even a small amount of alcohol, severely impair our ability to drive safely. The Big Red Med Box will help protect our children, teens, our communities and reduce crime related to prescription drugs. We hope to raise the awareness that certain prescription drugs are as addictive as heroin or crack cocaine and should be securely stored in the home.” The Big Red Med Box at the Liggett Drugs can’t be missed. “It’s big and it’s red,” said Hertz. Manufactured on Long Island, the Box meets the Drug Enforcement Administration’s specifications published by the DEA in their regulations to implement the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010. For now, the Big Red Med Box will collect only noncontrolled medications until the New York State Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement finalizes changes to state regulations that will permit pharmacies to collect controlled medications. Until the regulations are changed, controlled medications can be brought to the Southampton Town Police Department headquarters at 110 Old Riverhead Road in Hampton Bay.

Synagogue’s Summer Series The Conservative Synagogue of The Hamptons will offer a series of Scholar-in-Residence weekends during the month of August. This week, it announced its schedule for the 2015 season featuring three distinguished teachers: Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller (August 7-8), JTS Chancellor Arnold Eisen (August 15), and prayer-book editor and author Rabbi Ed Feld (August 21-22). “It’s extraordinarily exciting to be hosting teachers of this depth and
stature to guide us in thinking about some of our most pressing concerns -- both national and personal,” said Rabbi Jan Uhrbach, the spiritual leader of the congregation. “The media bombards us with words, but rarely do we have the opportunity to study with great thinkers who can push past the hype and help us access our tradition in a challenging and nuanced way.” The first weekend in the series will feature a Shabbaton with Rabbi Seidler-Feller, a world-renowned Torah scholar and the long-time Executive Director of the UCLA Hillel. Beginning with the evening service and Shabbat dinner Friday, August 7, at 6:30 PM, he will discuss “BDS and Campus AntiSemitism: How Bad is It?” His topic during the 9:30 AM Shabbat morning ser vice on Saturday, August 8, will be “Land for Peace? Lessons from the Jewish Tradition.” The weekend will conclude Saturday evening with a study session beginning at 7 PM entitled “Biblical Lessons on Inequality and the Torah of Sufficiency.” A light meal will be served. All are welcome, and all events are free -- donations are gratefully accepted. The Saturday morning service and talk will take place at the Social Hall of the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church, 2350 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton. Due to limited meal seating, reservations are required for the Friday and Saturday evening sessions, which will be held at Rabbi Uhrbach’s home (address provided upon reservation). Reserve by email to cshpres@gmail.com or call 631-4880072 by Monday, August 3. The Conservative Synagogue of The Hamptons is a fully egalitarian, fully participatory synagogue, whose services are joyful, beautiful and genuinely prayerful, with opportunities for both song and silence. For reservations, directions, and additional information, visit www.synagoguehamptons.org, or contact cshpres@gmail.com, or leave a message at 631-488-0072.

Eyeing Drug Abuse Epidemic On Monday Congressman Lee Zeldin announced a bipartisan initiative in Congress to combat drug abuse across the country and on Long Island: The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2015 (H.R. 953) and the Stop Overdose Stat (SOS) Act (H.R. 2850), both cosponsored by the Congressman. Congressman Zeldin made the announcement after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report last week highlighting the growing drug abuse epidemic across America, specifically heroin abuse, which is skyrocketing across all demographics on Long Island. The CDC reports that heroin use among younger generations is soaring. The Center found that over the past decade, heroin use has doubled among young adults ages 18 to 25 and heroinrelated overdose deaths have nearly quadrupled. On Long Island alone, there were 42 heroin and other drug overdoses in the past 15 months, and 341 drug-related deaths overall in 2014. “Our communities and families on Long Island have been severely impacted by the rise of prescription drug abuse and the growing epidemic of heroin,” said Congressman Zeldin. “The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, which I am proud to support and cosponsor, is bipartisan legislation aimed at increasing treatment and recovery services, and providing the proper
education and resources at a local level on Long Island and across New York State to help combat this growing epidemic.” H.R. 953 will help provide Long Island residents suffering from drug abuse with the services they need to guide them on the road to recovery. The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act will provide up to $80 million in funding to help prevent and treat addiction through community-based education and preventative programs, and treatment and recovery programs. The grants made available through this bill will also provide the funding necessary to expand prescription drug monitoring programs in states. Additionally, the funding will provide police and emergency medical responders with higher supplies of Naloxone, a prescription drug proven to reverse an opioid overdose. The Stop Overdose Stat (SOS) Act (H.R. 2850) provides an additional $25 million over a 5 year period for Naloxone production and distribution, to help increase the supply, and provide more medical professionals and families with this life saving drug. It will also establish a preventative
research task force, which will be established to research ways to prevent future overdose deaths, taking a preventative approach against drug abuse. “Together, as a community, we must reverse the growing

It is heartbreaking to see this beautiful tuxedo cat crawling out of a sewer she uses for shelter. “Stormy” is a beautiful black and white cat with amazing green eyes, three years young. Her “home” is this storm drain in a senior community parking lot. Her owner may have died or she may have been abandoned. But she is very affectionate and comes out when her caretaker arrives with food. She weaves in and out of your legs, wanting to be pet. Stormy is extremely friendly and loving. Ospreys Make Playoff Bid By Rick Murphy
The North Fork Ospreys aren’t going down quietly. F r i d a y t h e N o r t h Fo r k e r s edged Riverhead in an epic affair, catapulting them into the fourth place and the final playoff berth that goes with it. Tyler Houston thrilled the home crowd by lacing a walk-off single with two outs in the ninth inning to secure the win. Riverhead scored twice in both the third and fifth innings to take a 4-0 lead but North Fork fought back. Nick Heath hit a two-run
homer in the fifth to begin the comeback. Down 4-3 in the eighth, Jake Lieberman delivered a runscoring sacrifice fly and Brendan Satran singled in another run. Riverhead struck back with a run in the ninth on a single by Ethan Schmidt. North Fork answered when James Morisano singled with one out in the ninth, was sacrificed over to second by Bobby Honeyman and raced home on Houston’s single. Alex Perry (Sacred Heart) led Riverhead by going 3 for 4 with three runs scored, while Schmidt Daniel Jacobson and the North Fork Ospreys are fighting for a playoff berth.

The Bucks sent 10 batters to the plate in a six-run fourth inning, and they coasted to victory. Jonathan Maroney contributed a two-run double as Shelter Island raced to a 6-0 first inning lead. Kevin Wiltse permitted only a single hit in the final 3 2/3 inning to earn the victory. Sag Harbor needs some help if the Whalers are to make the playoffs. They currently sport a 16-

The Gronk Factor
A few years back it would have been unheard of to draft a tight end in the first round of your Fantasy Football draft. That’s because although tight ends are receivers, they have two other important functions of the football field: to protect the quarterback and to block for running backs -- neither of those skills are measured in Fantasy Football. Sometimes tight ends that really can’t even catch the ball well will play most of the game because they are such good blockers. Then along came Jimmy Graham, a tall, swift tight end who looks and plays like a wide receiver. In 2011 he caught a staggering 99 passes for 1310 yards and 11 touchdowns. The next year, some fantasy players were picking him in the second round. After he scored 16 touchdowns in 2013, some of us picked him in the first round. Graham was slowed by injuries last season and shockingly, the New Orleans Saints traded him to Seattle during the offseason. This should cut down Graham’s stats, because the Saints throw the football a lot more often than the Seahawks do. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a tight end worthy of a first round pick anymore. Ron Gronkowski is every bit that and more — using at least one sabermetric model, The Gronk might be worthy of the first overall pick. Consider that last year The Gronk averaged 12.3 fantasy points per game in a standard scoring format – almost three points more than Antonio Gates, who finished second. That’s almost 25 percent. Using a VAR (Value Against Replacement) it gets better – he’s four points better than the fourth ranked. He’s six or seven points better than a lot of tight ends. That means that if you have The Gronk you are starting every week with a fantasy lead, at least on paper. The discrepancy is enormous. Consider that statistically the top six running backs in the league are for our purposes interchangeable; ditto the quarterbacks and the wide receivers. Let’s take the numbers part further: Aaron Rodgers averaged 22 FP per game; Andrew Luck, 21.9. The fifth ranked passer averaged 19.1. In other words, Rodgers was
13 percent more productive then the fifth ranked quarterback and only 7.5 percent more effective than the third best fantasy performer, Russell Wilson D e m a r c o M u r r a y, t h e t o p performing running back, was three percent better than his runner-up L’Veon Bell and 10 percent better than third and 20 percent better than the fifth best performing fantasy running back. Similarly, the top five wide receivers, when measure by Fantasy Points Per Game, were
indistinquishable from one another. Now look at Gronk – he produced a full 20 percent more than the second ranked tight end and close to 40 percent more than the fifth ranked tight end. He was twice as good number 10! C o ns ider ing mo s t f a nta s y leagues have at least 10 teams and as many as 16, picking Gronk will give you a lead of anywhere from three to nine points against every other team in your league. Translated, that means taking Gronk early in the draft is a no brainer. How early really depends on your draft strategy. If you have the first overall pick in a 12-team league it might not be wise — by the time you pick again, 23 picks later, every elite running back and wide receiver will be gone. Let’s say you pick in the middle of the pack – say seven – in a standard snake

draft, there will still be a quality performer available when you pick again in the second round. We will publish our complete draft list at the end of August. Skippy Brown won the 2013 Draft Kings $100,000 Spring Fling and has finished first in dozens of Pro Fantasy leagues.

On Monday, Boy Scouts of America (Suffolk County Council) launched an eight-week-long ‘crowdfunding’ opportunity through popular host DepositAGift.com with the goal to “Wake Up Our Waterfront” and raise $15,000 to fund quality water

enrichment equipment that’s not provided by any other funding. Whether swimming, paddling a canoe, or casting a fishing line, the waterfront at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp is one of the most popular places for a Scout to be. In 2014 alone, 7,000 Scouts camped at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in a combination of summer camp, parent-cub weekends, troop weekend camping, and specialty camps. And while the natural beauty and resources available are top notch, equipment is in need of some serious updating. Contributions will directly support quality water enrichment equipment, including log rollers, eight canoes, and six stand up paddleboards. Director of Development for Boy Scouts of America (Suffolk County Council), Joanne Courtien, and her team are hoping to involve thousands of members, supporters, and the public at large to rally around the camp‘s water program. “In order for us to continue serving future generations at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp, we need your help,” said Courtien. “We are excited to organize this campaign online so that supporters near and far can help ‘Wake Up Our Waterfront’ beginning on July 20. Every dollar is needed, appreciated, and counts.” Here’s how you can support Wake Up Our Waterfront: 1. Visit the DepositAGift.com page, view the content, and contribute as much or as little as you can. 2. SHARE the link with all of your contacts through social media, email, letters, phone calls, texts, and more. Passionate sharing is crowdfunding. If just 150 families donate $100.00, the Boy Scouts of America (Suffolk County Council) will quickly be at its goal.

On The Water
Sea Bass Action On Reef
Shinnecock Bay, Inlet, Ocean Fluke bite in the bay continues to be a chore if you want a few keepers. Try the incoming tides, clean water. All the regular baits are working. Ocean has seen a surge in the amount of fluke making it to the box. Best baits are large strip baits and whole squids. About 70-80 feet of water has seen the most action. A good amount of sea bass are out on the reef and the open bottom, squid and clam baits best. Cocktail blues are throughout the bay taking fluke baits. Striped bass taking drifted live baits in the inlet and out in the ocean in the bunker pods. Snappers are beginning to show in the local creeks. Peconic Bay Porgy bite has been a pick at best. Better bite has been further to the east around Sag Harbor. Cocktail blues moving throughout the bay.
Offshore Good mako and thresher shark bite continues within 12 miles of the beach and as close as 60 feet in the bunker pods. The bluefin are still within reach of most of the smaller boats looking to tangle with a tuna. Run out towards the Coimbra and look for signs of life. Trolling in the early mornings has been best. In the mix are some mahi and a few white marlin. New Stuff We are now stocking Korkers wading boots, Viper Spoons by Thundermist and tire deflators by JT Brooks. Capt. Play Bridge A hand very similar to this one was played recently at the North Fork Country Club. Most EastWest teams won the contract and successfully made their 4 heart bid for a score of 420. One South, Sue S., decided to make a “sacrifice” bid of 5D. Sue knew she would be doubled but reasoned that she would go down two tricks at most, giving the opponents only 300 points. The defense took the first three tricks, winning two hearts and one spade. They could see that Sue might be able to ruff spades in her hand and clubs in dummy. Thus they led a trump, which Sue won in her hand. Next she played her ace of clubs followed by a club ruff in dummy, a spade ruff in hand, a club ruff in dummy and another spade ruff in hand. Another club ruff in dummy followed by another spade ruff in hand allowed her to draw trumps and cash the good jack of clubs. As a result of her fine play,

Sue went down only one trick, giving the opponents a score of 100 points versus the 420 they would have made for making their heart game. She bid well and played well. Any questions or comments can be sent to gaman13927@aol.com. We are presently creating bridge lessons for the fall.
