Recently a friend sent me a funny email describing the 2016 Democratic National Convention schedule. I love it because it’s so unfair. Note: If someone has a similar schedule for the Republican National Convention, send it to me This is one of those weeks. My N.Y. Giants stink. They probably won’t get better until they cart off their very old, very stubborn and very cranky coach, Tom Coughlin, to the Nasty Old Coaches’ Nursing Home. Then there’s my Republican Party. They, sadly, are worse than my Giants. Have you seen those debates? Trump has single-handedly destroyed the party. It’s sad to see Republicans tripping over themselves to top Trump and say how they would deal with immigrants. At one point I was praying that as the ultimate “Can You Top This?” moment, Mike Huckabee would not suggest that his solution to 11

million immigrants was genocide. Not one of them mentioned how Obama has been dealing or not dealing with the issue. No one mentioned what Hillary’s latest views are on immigration. Republicans just painted themselves into a corner and made sure they wouldn’t get a single Hispanic vote on election night. Then there’s Planned Parenthood. Each candidate was trying to show how tough he or she would be on Planned Parenthood. How many young women who were sick and tired of Hillary and who were planning to vote Republican changed their vote when they heard the Republican candidates’ views on that issue? Couldn’t one of the candidates have simply said, “I don’t think the government should fund Planned Parenthood. I will fight for their right to keep their organization, but during my administration they will have to rely on donations from their followers.” So, sadly, the only winner of the Republican debates has been Hillary, and once again – before the largest possible television audience – Republications have demonstrated an uncanny ability to shoot themselves in the foot.

and I will print it. I can’t hurt the Republican candidates as much as they hurt themselves every time they open their mouths. Until then, this is so funny it might even make a grouch like Bernie Sanders smile.

Town Projects Get Big Boosts By Emily Toy

It’s definitely been a long time coming, in some cases it’s been years, but projects throughout Southampton Town are getting some money and some TLC from several organizations, both private and public. A contract with Lipsky Enterprises Inc. was set to be authorized at last night’s town board meeting for the restoration of the Nathaniel Rogers House in Bridgehampton. A bid was received on September 9 and was reviewed by the Community Preservation Manager and Contract Technician. The cost for the restoration is slated to be over $1.3 million with the contract with Lipsky lasting seven months. The house sits on the southeast corner of Montauk Highway and Ocean Road, just past the Bridgehampton Monument. Landmarked by the town, the house has been deemed important for its architectural significance, its critical location (arguably at the busiest intersection on the East End), its rich history and its potential as a repository for the history of Greater Bridgehampton. The goal of the restoration is to make the house a facility that will serve as the headquarters of the Bridgehampton Historical Society and as a cultural resource center for the community. “Ultimately the house will encompass a visitor’s welcoming area, a gift shop, exhibition spaces, a research and study area with computerized retrieval systems, archival collections of photos, maps and documents, recording space for the ongoing documentation of community memories and administrative space,” according to house’s preservation project website. As of last night, Southampton Town Board members were also expected to execute a contract with The Raynor Group for construction management and oversight of the

Schoolhouse Comes Home

Independent / Kitty Merrill

Last Saturday, just about a year after the announcement that the original Amagansett schoolhouse would be donated to the school district and placed on the Main Street school property, experts moved the 1802 structure to its final home. A section of Main Street was closed Saturday as Davis Building Movers used a remote control trailer and dolly to transport the house from its Atlantic Avenue site to the school property. It will sit on pilings for a while before its permanent installation. Built by Samuel Schellinger, the schoolhouse is thought to be the oldest of its kind on eastern Long Island. Last fall, Huntington and Adelaide Sheldon offered to donate the building to the school district. Its final destination is across the street from the structure’s very first home. The Amagansett School Board adopted a resolution accepting the donation last January. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is slated for next month. K.M.

The World Of Goody Garlick It’s been described as one of the most intriguing stories in the history of East Hampton, the town’s own contribution to the lore surrounding the Salem Witch trials. In 1658 Goody Garlick was accused of witchcraft and subsequently tried in Connecticut. Step into her world this weekend. With the help of Village Historian Hugh King and his wife, Loretta Orion, a retired professor of anthropology, the East Hampton Historical Society has put together a series of lectures that will tell the story of East Hampton’s famous witch trial. The conference will start on Saturday with an overview of the society that Goody Garlick, the accused witch, lived in. Colonial East Hampton was a surprisingly litigious place and local attorney Daniel Cohen will present highlights from town records that document an unusually jealous and superstitious community. Hugh King will deliver a paper that he wrote with Orion that focuses on how this small community could become so embroiled in the idea of a witch in their midst. After a picnic lunch Walter Woodward, the Connecticut State

King will close out the seminar by articulating the relevance of the story today. Admission to the conference, which will take place from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Session House of the

Presbyterian Church at 120 Main Street, is by reservation only and costs $50 per person. Reservations and payment can be made by phone at 631-324-6850 or on the historical society website.

Coalition hosts candidate “conversations” at the Amagansett Library on Saturday. Those running for East Hampton Town supervisor and town board will be interviewed in two sessions, with sessions

devoted to specific tickets. From 2 to 3 PM, one group of hopefuls running for supe and town board will be in the hot seat, with their challengers following from 3 to 4 PM.

Parking Ban Vote And A Music Suspension The East Hampton Town Board made quick work of a brief agenda last Thursday night. Just one measure prompted dissent. Councilman Fred Overton offered the sole “nay” vote on a resolution sponsored by Supervisor Larry Cantwell. Adopted with yes votes cast by Cantwell, Councilman Peter Van Scoyoc and Councilwoman Sylvia Overby, the resolution prohibits Ciao from using its outdoor areas for music for a year. Violations of the town’s noise code prompted public hearings about the Fort Pond Road, Montauk, restaurant’s compliance with its music entertainment permit earlier this summer. Overton voted against the prohibition, citing it as “too harsh.” Also last Thursday night, the town board voted unanimously to ask permission from the state Department of Transportation to prohibit parking on the south side on Montauk Highway across the street from Cyril’s Fish House on the Napeague Stretch. The move is another effort by the town board’s Democratic majority to crack down on unruly clubs in Montauk. Cyril’s is on the way to Montauk and complaints about afternoon revelers packing the joint, spilling onto the roadside with their frozen BBCs, and clogging the highway -- as patrons search for parking spots and other motorists rubberneck -- have been numerous for the last several years. The resolution notes the danger of customers crossing the busy highway to get to the Fish House. K.M.

The congressional election is over a year away and she hasn’t even secured the nomination, but that’s not stopping Anna Throne-Holst. Now the Supervisor of Southampton Town, Throne-Holst declined to run for another term and has her sights set on Washington. Nomination or no, she’s seeking donations avidly. And criticizing incumbent Representative Lee Zeldin. This week, Throne-Holst lambasted the congressman for voting to defund Planned Parenthood. “I’ll just say it – Lee Zeldin just threw New York families under the bus,” an email blast from the would-be candidate begins, describing the defunding as a move that will “rip lifesaving health care away from millions of women and families.” She said the vote shows “just how out of touch Lee Zeldin really is with New York families . . . He would rather destroy one of our country’s largest healthcare providers than stand up for women and families.” Close to 180,000 people in New York State depend on Planned Parenthood for health care services, according to EMILY’s List, a resource for women’s politics. Responding to a request for comment on Throne-Holst’s reaction, Zeldin spokesperson Jennifer Di Siena said via email, “The legislation you are referring to would redirect federal funds from

Planned Parenthood to community health centers and other healthcare providers that provide woman’s health services for one year while Planned Parenthood’s activities are investigated. Congressman Zeldin voted for this legislation last week and it passed the House by a vote of 241-187.” Zeldin himself offered, “Women must have access to the highest quality of health care from providers maintaining the highest standards of excellence. That is why I successfully advocated for ensuring that the federal tax dollars in question are driven to women’s health care. I have heard from many constituents who are asking for an investigation into activities such as the commercial harvesting of aborted babies. We must ensure that women are receiving the highest quality of care, while the investigation is completed. ” Next Tuesday Planned Pa re n th o o d pr es ident C ec ile Richards is expected to testify at a hearing about the undercover videos before a House Oversight Committee. PP VP Eric Ferrero said in a statement this week that fetal tissue donation for medical research is an important “but tiny” part of Planned Parenthood’s work in two states. He predicted the “doctored and discredited videos” will show no wrongdoing. Democrats on the committee want anti-abortion rights activist David Daleiden to testify as well.

He’s the one who released the videos. Meanwhile House Republicans say they will not vote to pass any budget that includes funding for Planned Parenthood, which could trigger a government shutdown. Dems are dismissing the Planned Parenthood vote as a ploy by Republican opponents to prompt a shutdown and unseat House Speaker John Boehner. Planned Parenthood receives an estimated $500 million in government funding. It’s used to subsidize birth control, cancer screenings and health care for lowincome patients. Under federal law, PP can’t use federal subsidies for

abortions. The Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2015 prohibits funding to Planned Parenthood or any of its affiliates for a one-year period unless they certify that no abortions will be performed by the organization or its affiliates. The restriction will not apply in cases of rape or incest or where a physical condition endangers a woman’s life unless an abortion is performed.

introduction to the guide points out. The local guide builds on earlier efforts of the New York League of Conservation Voters, offering East Hampton-specific objectives. It looks at five aspects of the environment -- groundwater and surface water, coastal adaptation and resiliency planning, dark skies and quiet skies, a sustainable energy grid, and habitat protection and stewardship -- and provides action plans for each. Action plans cover a wide scope of wish list items. They run the gamut from the adoption of a helicopter and seaplane ban to the creation of a septic system upgrade program to providing nighttime access to public properties for

astronomical observation to the burial of the transmission lines and removal of PSEG-LI’s newly installed utility poles. The group also calls for adding experts to the town’s roster. It suggests appointing an advisor to the planning department for lighting issues and the creation of a standing panel of advisors on complex environmental issues “that often exceed the scientific grasp of elected officials and that can arrive too quickly to allow the formation of a specialized committee.” The Green Guide also voices support for state bills banning Penta (which is used on utility poles) and legislation that requires utilities to get permission from local government before they can work in a town or village and require they perform a state environmental review before the work. It supports the use of grant money to assess coastal erosion and develop a plan to protect the coastline. Members of the East Hampton

Environmental Coalition include the Accabonac Protection Committee, Amagansett Springs Aquifer Protection, Citizens Climate Lobby, Clearview Beach Association, Concerned Citizens of Montauk, Dark Sky Society, Defend H2O, Ditch Plains Association, Group for the East End, Long Island Businesses for Responsible Energy, New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, Northwest Alliance, Quiet Skies Coalition, Surfrider Foundation, Third House Nature Center and the Trails Preservation Society. The Coalition presented candidates with questionnaires earlier this campaign cycle and expects to release the results at the end of this week. Answers will likely be the springboards for candidate discussions on Saturday, as the Coalition hosts candidate “conversations” at the Amagansett Library. Those running for supervisor and town board will be interviewed in two sessions, with sessions devoted to specific tickets. From 2 to 3 PM, one group of hopefuls running for supe and town board will be in the hot seat, with another following from 3 to 4 PM.

Principal In Hot Water Southampton High School Principal Esther Adler-O’Keefe is in hot water after a Hip Hop video she appeared in featured drug use and scantily clad young people. Adler-O’Keefe is fully clothed and only appears briefly in the video “Best Friend” by the Rapper J.R. and singer Trey Songz. O’Keefe and her husband Brian ostensibly are leaving their mansion overnight in the care of a group of raucous young people who promptly turn the house into party central replete with pot smokers, excessive drinking, and explicit sexual behavior. The appearance of the video caused a flood of Internet chatter, with many parents condemning the video and the principal’s appearance, though some bloggers defended her, specifically the fact that she did not appear in any of the off-color scenes. A spokesman for J.R. said O’Keefe was a hired actor who said her lines and left the filming immediately afterwards. However, Scott Farina, the Southampton School District Superintendent, said in a statement, “It has recently come to our attention that a member of our administrative staff appeared in a music video. This is not representative of who we are as a district nor of our students and staff.” O’Keefe is said to be known as a straight shooter at the school. One blogger who identified herself as a parent wrote, “I’ve had my share of meetings with her, never ending with what I felt was satisfactory in the least. Each time we were in there, she gave us a pompous attitude, a holier than thou face every single time. And add to those, the oh so sickly sweet lectures about how as a parent we need to be the mature adults in this relationship,” on 27 East. Farina declined to address if further action is contemplated against O’Keefe.

RICK’S SPACE The Debate: Who Won? Like most Americans I watched the debate between 11 GOP candidates Wednesday night attentively. I also switched back and forth between the Yankees’ and Mets’ games as well as keeping an eye on my computer for Tweets. I am now going to issue a report card for each candidate and, at the end of this column, accurately predict the combatants in the upcoming presidential race. (Candidates, as they appeared from left on the debate stage): Rand Paul: He reminds me of the guy in The Manchurian Candidate. He may well be brainwashed. Never show him the Queen of Spades. I don’t like his tussled hair. His eyes say, “psychopath.” I usually went to kitchen for Captain Crunch when he started talking so have no idea what his positions are. Grade D: OUTLOOK: Will drop out of the race soon.

Mike Huckabee: He has an ugly square-shaped head and he’s a Jesus freak – not good. He reminds me of Hubert Humphrey but he is more masculine looking. I was watching the Mets game when he was talking, therefore he is eliminated from the race because he couldn’t hold my attention. Grade: D OUTLOOK: Bleak. Marco Rubio: I like him. He reminds me of JFK with his youthful good looks. An excellent public speaker who is forceful and to the point. Has the look of a winner. No, I’m not gay . . . OK maybe a little. Grade A: OUTLOOK: A contenduh. Ted Cruz: Has a hound-dog face so I went out to the kitchen for a meat loaf sandwich and pretended it was dog food. He is against the Iran deal — welcome to the freaking club. It would be funny if he were in the

cross-eyed so he can’t look Putin in the eye, so there is that, too. Grade C OUTLOOK: Put a fork in him.

Ben Carson: It ain’t brain surgery, as they say. If he can do that he can run a country. Carson has the demeanor and brains and I suspect he is a no-nonsense guy beneath the calm. Grade: B+ OUTLOOK: In it for the long haul.

Carly Fiorina: She handled herself well but she never smiles. She truly was an awful CEO — I bought Lucent at $18 and the stock fell to 70 cents. That means she’d make a perfect President. Has a vagina, and that helps. Babedelicious? I know Sara Palin, and she’s no Sarah Palin. Grade: A- OUTLOOK: Needs to lighten up.

Donald Trump: What can you say? He’s probably peaked. Even his hair looked calmer. Probably will begin to lose points in the polls. In the end he’ll cut a deal with Hillary, and that was probably the plan all along. Grade: B- OUTLOOK: He’ll parlay this into something that will help his business empire. Jeb Bush: Christ, what a wimp. Never before has a favorite fell from grace so quickly and completely. He thinks his brother “kept us safe” – yeah, except for that pesky World Trade Center bombing. He wants to put Margaret Thatcher on the $10 bill – hello? Hello? One positive: he didn’t speak Spanish once. Grade: D OUTLOOK: Family money will keep him in the race until Super Tuesday. Scott Walker: He seemed to make sense but he is goofy looking so I switched over to the ballgame. He’s • FAIR MINDED • INDEPENDENT • A NEW VOICE • CITIZEN, NOT A CAREER POLITICIAN

John Kasich: He was good in the first debate, but he looked frazzled, nervous and sweaty this time around, like High Hefner must look in the bedroom with all those nude blondes coming at him. This was his last gasp. Grade: D OUTLOOK: See ya. Chris Christie: He’s done in by the group shots — yes, the man is fat, but who knew he was so short? Still, he was pretty good in the debate, the only candidate who seemingly cares more about the people than himself. But you can’t be as wide as you are tall unless you are a perfect square. Grade: B OUTLOOK: There is only room for one loud-mouthed Northeasterner and Trump has the market cornered. Could emerge as a VP candidate under right scenario. Debate Winners: Rubio and Fiorina And the Republican Candidate for President will be: Rubio with either Fiorina or Carson as the VP. Thanks to Annie at Hamptons Market for suggesting the new photo in this column’s header. She said it makes me look more “mature,” an attribute I’ve never exhibited before. Insight

Talk About Bad Timing! Putting politics aside, the assertion that Planned Parenthood sells off body parts of aborted fetuses is pretty shocking, and true. The emergence of videos showing Planned Parenthood officials doing something even worse – harvesting a live brain to sell, was cause enough for the House of Representatives to defund the organization while an investigation is conducted. There has been some muted response from PP that the videos were altered, but there is now so much evidence it is impossible to deny totally. The matter, of course, provided plenty of fodder at the recent debate of Republican candidates. That’s why it struck us as odd the Anna Throne-Holst’s campaign sent out the following email to supporters Friday: “Lee Zeldin just voted to defund Planned Parenthood.

This is exactly why Zeldin is wrong for New York. He would rather destroy one of our country’s largest healthcare providers than stand up for women and families.

Anna is standing 100 percent with Planned Parenthood. And after today’s events, it’s clear we desperately need her in Congress -- and to send Zeldin packing. We’re asking: will you chip in to support Anna’s campaign today?”

Even Throne-Holst’s most ardent supporters must have blanched when they received this missive. Honestly, Anna, could the timing be worse? While the departing Southampton Town Supervisor, a Democrat, is taking shots at Congressman Zeldin, a Republican, and soliciting money to run against him, local Democrats say she may never get the chance. Dave Calone, the chairman of the County Planning Department, thinks he is the favorite to get the nod to oppose Zeldin, and vows to run a primary against Throne-Holst in June if he doesn’t emerge as the party choice. This is not a bash against Throne-Holst, who we like and admire – she’s done a great job in Southampton. And Zeldin’s archaic views about gay marriage and abortion certainly don’t get any points with us. But hopping in bed with Planned Parenthood, an organization that has disgraced itself, is a blunder of epic proportions. The Independent is proudly Pro-Choice, and always has been. But it’s important to realize you can be Pro-Choice and still rail against the policies of Planned Parenthood if indeed these allegations are correct. This isn’t about women’s rights – this is about the callous disregard for human dignity by Planned Parenthood: it raises questions about its ethics and morals. It’s fair to question the judgment of someone who would blindly support that organization at this point in time. We urge Throne-Holst to take a step back and call on Planned Parenthood to dispute the allegations or dismiss those responsible for these questionable policies.

to make in an election year? Election year or not, this legislation needs to be completed. Legislative choices should not be based upon the personal needs of elected officials to perpetuate themselves in office. When elected to the town board I will make those choices that are in the best interests of the residents of East Hampton, and not base my vote on what is in my own self-interest. MARGARET TURNER CANDIDATE, EH TOWN BOARD

Food Fight Dear Rick The debate circus on 9/16 was a real food fight - full of utterly false statements and distortions with very little on policy. One particular gaffe came when Trump told Bush that his brother and his administration was such a disaster that Abraham Lincoln couldn’t have been elected over Obama. Bush’s response was “As it relates to my brother, there’s one thing I know for sure: He kept us safe.” He kept us safe? GWB ignored the Al Qaeda warnings from the Clinton administration and 9/11 was on his watch. What was Jeb on when he made that ridiculous statement? ED JABLONSKY

Knee-Jerk Reaction Dear Rick, If you spent hours at the August 20 public hearing on the proposed East Hampton Town law prohibiting beds in cellars and basements, and at the “follow-up” discussion on September 1 at a Town Board work session, then you too must have been shocked by the Board’s shortage of facts and figures, their legal and historical inaccuracies, and lack of any real long-term planning perspective to support it. To make matters worse, after sitting there for hours, when the Board was asked if a vote was to be taken on the proposal on August 20, Sylvia Overby stated flat out that there was no resolution before the Board. What? Fortunately, the Town Attorney reminded the Board that, in fact, she had written the resolution that was up for a vote that evening. When asked if any of the Board Members had thoughts on the proposal, no one said a peep and the vote was deferred, with the matter to be discussed “by the full Board” at the September 1 work session.

The Independent publishes all letters to the editor we receive provided they are not libelous and emailed to news@indyeastend.com. We strive to print all obituaries as well but in the event we can’t, they will be published online at www.indyeastend.com. Please try to keep copy under 400 words.

Even with all of her lack of preparation and utter confusion, I believe Ms. Overby would have voted “Yes” to this ill-conceived resolution on August 20 “In The Name of the Comprehensive Plan.” Had two other Board Members voted “aye” along with her, the resolution would have become law in an eye blink. The sloppy spectacle of governance in connection with this proposal is frightening to me, and should be of concern to the whole community. For me, the takeaway from the discussion on September 1 was: Councilwoman Burke-Gonzalez hit the nail on the head when she characterized the proposal as a knee-jerk reaction to the two eight-bedroom houses built in Springs, and she didn’t feel the prohibition was warranted; Councilman Overton was against the proposal; Councilman Van Scoyoc wanted to send it to a committee, which potentially

included members of the public; Supervisor Cantwell had concerns about gross floor area and feels some houses are too big for their lot size (read: more property restrictions) and; Councilwoman Overby wanted comments from the Town’s “experts:” the building, planning and legal departments, before it is brought back to the public. As a firefighter pointed out, shouldn’t the town be promoting safe sleeping? What is the rationale behind making our town the only municipality in New York State that prohibits bedrooms in basements? It’s mind-boggling to think Sylvia Overby would have to seek and require the advice of “town experts” to answer these simple questions. Shouldn’t that have been done before the public hearing? When asked if this resolution, if passed, would still require State approval, Sylvia nodded “yes,” while Larry said “no”; then they said it was a “legal question.” Continued on Page 19.

Continued from page 18. Since this was the problem with the law that was passed in 1985, one would hope the board would not only know the answer, but explain it clearly to the public. Or perhaps it has already been explained and, in an election year, no board member remembers what was said, they aren’t paying attention, or no one wants to share the information with the public! Contrary to Mr. Buda’s assertion that this prohibition was “recklessly disregarded” by a prior administration, the fact is the prohibition was illegally enforced by the town for years when the building department followed orders under Democratic–led town boards not to issue permits for “‘bedrooms’ in cellars.” Put simply, the prohibition in the Code was not enforceable since the required permission of the state was neither sought nor received by the Town. My purpose in writing this letter is twofold: First, we must all either attend or watch the town board meetings and work sessions, which, I’ll admit, is very hard to do if you’re working full time, and we must expect answers from our elected officials. Second, after being a part of a nonpartisan committee which created the document that the town now relies on for its statistical data to analyze this issue, I write in the name of those parts of the Comprehensive Plan that call for the creation and support of affordable ways to house our families, our young and our elderly. Parts of the Plan that Ms. Overby talked about on the campaign trail four years ago, espouses that she supports, but has made no real effort to effectively promote while she was on the Town Planning Board or in office. The proof is always in the pudding. TINA PIETTE

EAST END SWIMMING POOL COMPANIES MERGE Now Offering New Construction Renovation & Maintainance Divisions

Egg-Free Dear Editor, McDonald’s pledge last week to start using cage-free eggs is only a small step in preventing staggering suffering endured by millions of birds. Hatcheries that annually supply 200 million female hens for U.S. egg production, including cage-free, also kill the same number of male chicks at birth by grinding them up alive in industrial macerators orsuffocating them slowly in plastic garbage bags. The female laying hens endure a lifetime of misery, crammed with 5-6 others, in small wire-mesh cages that cut into their feet and tear out their feathers.

If you belIeve the town board should treat cItIzens wIth courtesy and respect,

Lucia’s Angels, the Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Southampton Hospital, Ellen’s Run, The Ellen Hermanson Breast Center, Fighting Chance and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society are participating in the national “Be Bold, Be Bald” event on Friday, October 16 in which participants shave their heads or wear a bald cap to show their support for people going through cancer. Volunteers will also be taking “Bold and Bald” to new levels by showing up bald at many events in the next month that benefit local cancer organizations. Look for the enthusiastic baldies on Saturday painting the town pink with bows up and down the streets of Southampton Town; at the kick-off parade to the San Gennaro Festival of the Hamptons on Saturday, October 3; and at the Shelter Island 5K on Saturday, October 17, to name a few events. To join the local band of baldies, T-shirts and bald caps can be purchased for $20 per set from Susie (see contact info below.) To find out more about “Be Bold, Be Bald” and to donate to a local cancer organizations, go to: www.beboldbebald.org. For more information about the local initiatives, contact: Susie Roden at

Hats With Heart East End Cares has launched a donation collection called Hats with Heart in partnership with volunteers on the ground in Jordan. They are helping to deliver warm hats, scarves and gloves to the people living at the Zaatari Refugee Camp. Zaatari, which originated as an emergency response three years ago, now has a population of over 80,000 refugees. The winters get cold in the desert location and these items go a long way to add warmth and let the people know that others around the world care. Donations of new or like new hats, scarves and gloves and new only socks for men, women and children are being collected from now until October 10. Drop off locations are Gurney’s Montauk Resort and Seawater Spa, Buddha Berry in Sag Harbor and Rosehip Partners Real Estate at 3 Railroad Ave., East Hampton. Donors are invited to include a heart shape note of support and hope with their items.

Last week Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced his Recommended Budget of $2.917 billion for fiscal 2016, freezing general fund taxes for the fourth consecutive year. The budget increases revenue sharing with East End police departments by 13 percent. “This budget continues to move Suffolk County in the right direction by holding the line on taxes, streamlining government and making smart investments in growing our economy,” Bellone said in a release heralding the budget. “The formula for long term fiscal health is simple — hold the line on taxes, control spending, and grow the economy to create good jobs.” Bellone said he recognized that for years, the East End was not treated fairly and was unfairly subsidizing public safety in other parts of Suffolk County. He worked with the East End’s two legislators, Jay Schneiderman and Al Krupski, on a plan that would increase revenue sharing with the East End departments by $1 million per year for three years. This is the second increase. “Revenue sharing is about fairness and all residents can be assured that public safety dollars are being fairly disbursed to all local police departments,” Bellone said. “And I will keep my commitment in next year’s budget to continue to treat the East End fairly, as well.” A chart outlining the impact on individual police departments is seen above. The public safety revenue sharing program impacts all municipalities in the county that • FAIR MINDED • INDEPENDENT • A NEW VOICE • CITIZEN, NOT A CAREER POLITICIAN

Resurgent Bonackers Take Hamptons Cup By Rick Murphy

Sometimes a sabbatical is good for the soul. Consider the East Hampton Bonackers’ football team, which took a year off from varsity competition after three dreadful seasons. Saturday the Bonackers traveled to Southampton and came home with the prized Hamptons Cup after defeating that longtime rival and

doing so handily, 28-6. Southampton has had its only problems in recent years. Like in East Hampton the Mariners have experienced shifting demographics with a large increase of foreign-born Latinos in the classrooms. As a result, enrollment in the football program is down and there is a series of skilled players coming through the ranks.

The Hamptons Cup has been bandied about for half a century, the prize for the inner of the East Hampton/Southampton game, which used to be played annually. The Mariners lost their opener to Greenport a week earlier by a 51-12 margin, and the Porters aren’t known to be a powerhouse, either. The Bonackers, on the other hand, won for the second straight

week by besting Wynadanch 14-12 courtesy of the Johnson cousins, who for the first time in memory provided Bonac fans with highlight reel material. Brandon Johnson hit Jordan for a 70-yard strike and Jordan finished off the scoring with a 30-yard scamper. The cousins were at it again against Southampton -- Brandon opened the scoring with a six-yard plunge and Jordan raced 40 yards early in the third stanza to give Bonac a 12-0 lead. Jordan rushed for 115 yards on 15 carries and Brandon added 90 on 10 attempts in addition to hurling another TD pass. The win left East Hampton and Greenport tied for fourth place in Division IV with 2-1 marks; Southampton is 0-2 on the young season. Westhampton broke into the W column by busting Hauppauge 3720 in Division III. Dylan Laube did much of the damage, rushing for three scores and gaining 116 yards. Quarterback Griffin Schultz went 11 for 19 through the air good for 114 yards. Hampton Bays broke a two-game schneid by silencing Port Jefferson 23-8. Travis Flynn rushed for 92 yards and two scores and passed for 118 more. Matt Rinaldi caught a 54-yard touchdown bomb. In Division II Riverhead couldn’t handle North Babylon and star running back Jahjuan Winters, losing 27-13. Winters went off for 166 yards and two scores. The Blue Waves are 0-2 on the season. In this week’s action Greenport comes to East Hampton for a 2 PM fray Saturday and Southampton plays at Center Moriches Friday evening. Riverhead has a home encounter against Hills East with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 Saturday. East Islip comes to Westhampton Friday evening at 6.

FANTASY SP By Skippy Brown

THE INDEPENDENT • Traveler Watchman

RTS

Don’t Chase Last Week! We have warned numerous times in this space to let bygones be bygones. Last week is just another example. Carlos Hyde, the San Francisco running back, was the top rusher in Week One. Forget that he was getting drafted in the fourth and fifth rounds in most drafts, or that he’s never gained over 100 yards in a game before he exploded for 148 last week. Fantasy players bowed to him like a messiah. In fact, in DFS, he was one of the most popular players in the country –literally in millions of lineups. It made sense on paper: his salary of Draft Kings was only $5100. (How it works, for those who don’t know, is you are given a salary cap of$50,000 to craft a nine-player team. That prevents you from loading up on star players.) On the other hand, Adrian Peterson was a bust in Week One, had a salary of $7700, and he didn’t even play last season. Most DFS players ignored him. That’s why you need to jig when everyone else jags in Daily Fantasy Sports: you cannot win following the herd – you have to separate yourself from the other players. As it turned out Hyde rushed 14 times for 43 yards, about what to expect from his in a normal week. Peterson? He rushed for 129 yards and added 58 more receiving. That’s what AD (All-Day) does! It was the 43rd time Peterson has gone over 100 yards: Hyde has done it once. He gained 2097 yards in 2012 (and won the Most Valuable Player Award): Hyde has 518 yards gained lifetime.

Peterson is considered to be one of the top five running backs who ever played: Hyde was a backup last year as a rookie (Peterson gained over 1300 yards as a rookie). Bottom line: if you played Hyde this week, you probably lost. That is not to say you ignore one game wonders. For example, Matt Jones came out of nowhere last this week and gained 123 yards for the Redskins. If he is available in season long leagues and you need an RB by all means draft him – but for god’s sake don’t put him in your starting lineup. Don’t forget Alfred Morris, another pretty good running back, is still on the team. Maybe he’s the one to have a good game next week. Similarly, David Johnson on Arizona has broken off two long runs and returned a kickoff 108 yards already this season. Is he an interesting prospect? Yes indeed. Should you pick him up in season long leagues? Absolutely. But don’t start him in DFS next week – Andre Ellington will be back, and he is a very talented player. Plus Johnson’s coach, Bruce Arians, likes to bring rookies along slowly. Take a look at some sample numbers to illustrate the importance of breaking the mold and thinking out of the box. In a $1 million tournament that costs 10 bucks to enter you need to have all nine of your players perform at an extremely high level to win. That’s because there are over 100,000 entries. If 50 percent

www.indyeastend.com

of those owned Hyde, they were eliminated. If 30 percent owned Eddie Lacey of Green Bay, there were eliminated as well. In fact, every star player who had a less than average game took down thousands of players with him. Conversely, Leonard Hankerson caught six passes for 77 yards and a TD and was minimum priced on all the DFS sites. If you had him, you had a chance to win some serious cash. Ditto Jones and Johnson. True, it’s my job to identify guys like this, but it’s not easy. I did have Hankerson in a few games last week – I know, I know. As I write this Monday I am alive in a couple big tournaments and I have Tyler Lockett, a receiver for the Colts who hardly ever plays. My feeling is after losing last week they might let the speedster see the ball a few times. I also have Donte Moncrief, another receiver who may see some more action. It’s not a payday, but I’m in the game, and that’s where you want to be on Monday night.
