SUMMER LAMENT, OR THE DELLA FEMINA CURSE I publish this column every year as a public service to make sure your friends and relatives will think twice before they send you an invitation that will screw you out of a precious summer weekend. WHY DO THEY DO IT? It’s already started. Some close friends of mine are having their Memorial Day weekend spoiled because some heartless fiend has scheduled her college graduation party for this coming Saturday night in some God-forsaken town in Pennsylvania. So after four years in a fine college what has this dopey graduate learned? Nothing. She still thinks her relatives would rather spend a Memorial Day Saturday with her than having a great weekend in the Hamptons.
Why do our friends and relatives destroy the summer for us? Why can’t they get married in February? Why do they choose the middle of summer to have birthdays, anniversaries, Bar Mitzvahs, family, college, high school and even nursery school reunions? That’s not all. Frankly, some of them are thoughtless enough to die on a Friday in June, July or August, and there goes another summer weekend. I promise that if it’s possible, when it’s time for me to go, I will go on life support until some rainy Friday morning in January so that my mourners can bury me early in the morning and still enjoy a three-day weekend. That’s the kind of generous guy I am. Now I know you’re wondering what I’m ranting about, since Memo-

rial Day weekend is here and you’re on top of the world because it looks like another endless summer ahead. Let’s just see how endless it really is. If you work Monday to Friday like me, that leaves you with around 13 summer Saturdays and Sundays, plus two long holiday weekends. (The Fourth of July falls on a Wednesday this year, so God knows how that’s going to work. At best you may steal a couple of more days.) So from the minute you’re reading this, summer weekends are a total of about 32 days. Now you know that at least 9 or 10 of these days will be cold, rainy days where no matter how hard you try to avoid it you’ll end up arguing with your spouse. All a man has to say is, “No, I don’t think it’s romantic to freeze my behind off walking in the rain on the beach. Why don’t we stay in bed and fool around?” and that’s when the pouting starts. So write off 10 miserable days to weather and you’re left with 22 days. Sound like a lot? I bet everyone reading this already has one lost weekend coming up when your Aunt Matilda is celebrating her 60th wedding anniversary and she and your Uncle Benny would be broken-hearted if you don’t show up on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to their house in Brooklyn or the Bronx or Westchester or wherever the hell they live. So, now you’re down to 21 days. If you’re young enough to have children, that means you’re stuck with a trip to some summer camp with an Indian . . . er . . . er . . . Native American name in Maine or Massachusetts, in the middle of what always turns out to be the sunniest, most beautiful weather weekend of the summer. This is where you are sentenced to spend the weekend admiring neatly made bunk beds and ceramic ashtrays (which in these politically correct days are called candy dishes, and thanks to the obesity police by next year they will be called organic raw broccoli dishes). Show me a camp that is wise enough to schedule parents’ visiting days on a Monday and Tuesday and I will show you a camp that deserves the exorbitant amount of money they get to guard your kids for the sum-

mer. An amount of money, I might add, that is more than it took, a few short years ago, to cover the tuition that would get a child through four years of an Ivy League college. If your children are grown it’s even worse. They have children and all their children are having birthday parties in town in July, where you will find yourself overcome by heat while you’re surrounded by 20 sticky five-year-olds playing musical chairs. What frosts me is the weather. Did you ever notice that every one of the weekends you have to go to a family event is beautiful? The sun is shining. The sky is blue. And you are stuck in some disgusting catering hall, or, worse, drinking warm white wine out of a plastic cup in some relative’s backyard in White Plains. Which brings me to summer weddings in the city. They must be banned. There are some facts that people who drag their friends away from the beach for their wedding must be made aware of. Jerry Seinfeld, an East Hampton resident, had a message for all the newly engaged couples: “Nobody wants to go to your wedding! We are not excited like you are.” Mr. Seinfeld is so so right. The only people who must attend a summer wedding are the bride and groom, their respective parents, the best man and the maid of honor and maybe a priest or a rabbi. All the other guests are hostages who may be smiling but inside they are seething because they have had one of their precious summer weekends screwed up. I remind every dewy-eyed couple in my family that in the summer it’s bad luck to get married any place west of Westhampton. I remind them of the famous Della Femina curse, which is still going strong. I have, in my life, attended four weddings that took place on a summer holiday weekend (three Memorial Day, one Labor Day) and must report, in all honesty, that not one of these couples is still married. Pass the word – the marriages of people who screw up my holiday weekends are doomed. East End Gears Up For Memorial Day By Emily Toy
Although this coming three-day weekend, for many, marks the beginning of the Hamptons summer season, it carries a lot more weight than that. Formerly known as Decoration Day, a day dedicated to honor those who perished in the Civil War, Memorial Day is a time for the living to honor and remember fallen soldiers of the past. For a century and a half, Memorial Day has included somber ceremonies for the fallen, ceremonial wreaths placed on graves, dozens of American flags of all sizes decorating store fronts and residences, and parades in most villages, towns and cities throughout the country. Here is a listing of East End parades and services scheduled for the weekend: • All are welcome at the “Montauk Memorial Weekend, A Weekend of Remembrance and Honor.” Saturday will feature a free “Montauk Fish and Chips” meal for all veterans at the Montauk Coast Guard Station on Star Island at 5:30 PM. For accompanying guests there will be a donation of $20 per person and $14 for children 10 and younger. Reservations are required. Call the Oceanside Beach Resort at 631-668-9825. • On Sunday, Montauk will have a parade beginning at noon from the Oceanside Beach Resort, heading east through the village, turning left on Edison and then past the post office to circle back to the village green. • Monday morning at 8, “Morning Colors” will be at the Montauk Village Green. At 8 PM, right around sunset, “Taps” will be played and flags will be retrieved. Afterward, anyone having flags in need of proper retirement can have them burned in the appropriate manner. • In East Hampton on Monday, the VFW Everit Albert Herter Post 505 presents its annual parade, which will assemble at Guild Hall at 10:15 AM. The parade begins at 10:30 AM. • Sag Harbor celebrates Memorial Day with an annual parade beginning at 9 AM on Monday. The parade’s route begins at the World War I monument at Otter Pond (next to the park) and continues on to the Chelberg and Battle American Legion Post 388 on Bay Street. Immediately following the parade is a speech by guest speaker, Sergeant First Class Russ Littel. More speeches and memorials are scheduled at the North Haven Village Hall later in the

day at noon. • In Southampton, the Commission On Veterans Patriotic Events invites all veterans wishing to participate in the annual Memorial Day Parade to be at the First Presbyterian Church parking lot by 10:30 AM. with us.” The pair didn’t know there was an infamous alleyway with a murky ownership history embedded in the site until a week or two before they were slated to close on the deal. The alleyway became a lightning rod for criticism after Supervisor Bill Wilkinson sold it to the pair for $35,000 – a price he claimed in jest he “plucked out of the air.” Though local critics – primarily Democrats – claimed the Republican-dominated town board was doing the pair a favor, the truth is it was anything but. The alley doesn’t exist on paper until 2010 – not just the part of it on the Ronjo property, but on the east side as well. The pair’s research, which includes aerial photographs, indicate it likely doesn’t belong to the town at all, or was illegally deeded to the town via a Quick Claim deed in 1982 by 511 Equities, the corporation that may have owned it, along with many other alleyways in Montauk. “There was no presentation of ownership,” Jones said. The corporation simply wanted to make sure it wouldn’t be taxed on the land. A photo from 1968 shows a small footbridge on the site where the alleyway was, and chaise lounges and a patio as well. Jones and Siedlick located the daughter of the Stuart family, who owned it in the fifties. The alley didn’t exist then, either. Jones said the pair probably would have prevailed in a case of adverse possession, “but we didn’t want to start this venture with a lawsuit against the town.” The pair has pumped millions into renovating the motel into 33 individual luxury rooms and suites. The plan is to offer the classic beach club experience and it will include discounted tickets for locals. There was a lot of fuss made about a liquor license for the motel, but the owners said it is clearly an CONTINUED ON PAGE 44.

T h e tro u b le is , the geniuses in the music business decided CDs are easier to make, ship and stock (and they don’t scratch). Lately, though, more and more artists have Independent / James J. Mackin demanded their companies Craig Wright is ready to rock the right way – vinyl.make records like they are supposed to be made – on vinyl. Moreover, many rock aficionados still have a record collection – and would like to collect more. Enter Craig Wright, with his Innersleeve Records, a store in Amagansett Square, where all things cool are alive and well. “Vintage vinyl” is his focus, Wright said, but “there will be a selection of new vinyl as well as new and used CDs.” Better still, there are turntables for sale to play the records on, made by Crosley – they are self contained, meaning the speakers and power source are built in. In other words, buy one, put on a record, and smell the patchouli. One of the unique features of the store is a “pop art leaning” gallery space that will evolve as time goes on. Right now there is a display of concert art and comic book art. “I’ve appealed to local artists and soon we’ll move on to the next idea.” There are also rock concert t-shirts and more stock coming in every day. Innersleeve Records is cutting edge – part of the vinyl preservation revolution that is sweeping the music business. The place rocks. The store is open from 10 AM to 7 PM on weekdays and stays open to 9 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. R.M.

The boutique features the Haute Hippie and Haute Hoodie collections and also the brand’s signature Rock-n-Roll Bohemian [RoBo] style – an aesthetic catering to the “gypset” in East Hampton. Everything But Water sets up shop on 66 Newtown Lane. The chain store’s stock in trade is designer swimsuits, and related items, and the selection is amazing. With Memorial Day fast approaching, veterans, both living and dead are in the thoughts of many. That includes Senator Ken LaValle,
J. Theinert, from Shelter Island, and Marine Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter, of Sag Harbor, were posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame yesterday in an Albany ceremony. “Joe Theinert and Jordan Haerter are true heroes who gave their lives protecting the freedoms we treasure,” LaValle said. “They should be recognized and commended by our state and community.” Theinert was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a new first lieutenant. About six weeks in, he was killed in action on June 4, 2010 after an improvised explosive device detonated while on a dismounted patrol in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was 24 years old. Haerter entered the Marine Corps

Yale, were guarding. Haerter and Yale opened fire until a 2000-pound blast claimed their lives. “Induction into the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame is a tribute to these two fine young men that demonstrates our respect and gratitude for their patriotism and sacrifice,” LaValle said. RICK’S SPACE Hot Times In The Country Memorial Day – the beginning of The Super Summer Season here in the Hamptons. Most locals don’t like the infusion of the Pushy People, but I don’t mind. I understand it’s good for the business community, and I don’t mind the crowds, at least not too much. In fact, I used to make a point of going out on Saturday nights of the big weekends just to bask in the glow of the huge throngs and do a little celebrity watching. The celebrity thing is a little overrated. If truth be told, we have a handful every season, usually the same faces. It used to be Billy Joel and Christie and Spielberg and the “Sex In the City” girls. In fact, I saw all four of them the same day, all separately. I used to have dreams about them, then I found out Cynthia was a lesbian and my erotic dreams intensified. Then they all moved away, and I was left with nothing but the restraining orders. Nowadays I see Howard Stern and his wife Beth around and they are good people. Kelly Ripa is a doll. Rudy
Giuliani likes the Bridgehampton Candy Kitchen. Spielberg still comes out, and you see him on Main Street in East Hampton a lot – he always has a baseball cap on. I see Renee Zellweger around sometimes. She’s very tiny. She squints a lot – must be the fabulous Hamptons’ sun. Seinfeld doesn’t spend much time here, and when he is in East Hampton it’s very low-keyed — In other words, he does nothing, and that figures. And then there is Bon Jovi, who I like very much even though he isn’t a lesbian. That’s about it, though, for the celebs. There’s thousands of pushy, ugly Alpha-types around, people who act like they are always in a hurry. They speed around in their SUVs and become extremely exasperated if you go too slow when you’re ahead of one of them. Sometimes they bang their horn. Sometimes they try to pass you illegally. These are the same people who insist on making left-handed turns onto crowded major arteries like Montauk Highway and the North Highway, the infamous “Highway of

Death.” Some die, but more come to take their place. Parking is a nightmare. Sometimes I like to park on Newtown Lane, put my car in reverse, and turn my head around like I’m pulling out. Cars will stop so the guy waiting for me can take my spot. I’ll just stay in that pose, frozen, until some aggressive man charges up to my window. “I’m waiting for you to back out!” he’ll sneer. “Oh, no, I’m good here. I’m just hanging out,” I reply. I have other ways to cope with the ugly people. Sometimes I like to leave a real-looking stuffed dog in their cars on really hot days, lock it, and then call the police and say there is a dog overheating in a parked car. They’ll come and smash the windows. This works even better with a baby, if you have a spare one handy. People on the way to the beach are in the biggest hurry. They will get downright surly if they have to wait on line. I like to get a few items at the deli and when it’s my turn pull out a pocket full of change. “That will be $6.68,” the clerk will say. “Okay here’s five, 12 cents, 37 cents, 38, 39 . . .” I say as I count the coins. Hey, I have all the time in the world. I don’t fawn over celebrities, but I must admit there have been times when I lose my cool. Paris Hilton . . .the Olsen twins . . Lindsay Lohan . . . you know, the giants. I just can’t help but gush. “Loved you in The Hottie and the

I ran into the Olsen twins having an animated discussion on Newtown Lane. They are so slim and trim! “Umm, Should we eat first and then make ourselves barf?” MaryKate asked. “Umm, Let’s make ourselves barf and then eat, OK?” Ashley replied. “OK?” ”OK!” One thing is for real, though. Our beaches are unreal. If you’re renting, buy a parking sticker, it’s worth it. There are hidden beaches all over, ones only locals go to, and that’s where you’ll find me, windsurfing, paragliding, scuba diving, even maybe competing in a couple triathlons – either that or asleep in my backyard, snoring, with the hose running on my feet. It’s all good. The Pretty People. Frozen drinks. Barbeques. This is what summer is all about. People come from all over the world and spend tens of thousands of dollars to experience what we have every day. Get out there and have some fun . . . and play nice!

EDITORIAL The True Meaning of Memorial Day It’s not about barbecues, parades and beaches, but it’s not surprising our young ones don’t understand the true meaning of Memorial Day. As one letter writer noted in this newspaper, “It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all. It is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service.” The names are etched on monuments and walls, and we add more each year it seems. Yet there was so much more to them in

Freedom Isn’t Free Dear Editor, Memorial Day is much more than a three-day weekend that marks the beginning of summer. To many people, especially the nation’s thousands of combat veterans, this day, which has a history stretching back all the way to the Civil War, is an important reminder of those who died in the service of their country. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all. It is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. Decoration Day (Memorial Day) was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on May 30,1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

Their lives are why we live here today and enjoy the bountiful summer fare. It’s important to never forget the horrors of war; the tombstones remind us, but so do the missing limbs and wheelchairs our young people come home in. War is tragedy; no good can come of it. Regardless of political persuasion, we should honor those who served but lament the world cannot find a peaceful way to solve its differences. Only then can we celebrate.
On May 5, 1868, Logan declared in General “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lay in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. During the first celebration of Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery. This 1868 celebration was inspired by local observances of the day in several towns throughout America that had taken place in the three years since the Civil War. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). After World War I, observances also began to honor those who had died in all of America’s wars. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May.
(Veterans Day, a day set aside to honor all veterans, living and dead, is celebrated each year on November 11.) The Memorial Day Poppy started with a poem by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian physician who enlisted to help the allies in the war. On May 3, 1915 during a lull in the battle with the nub of a pencil he scratched on a page from his dispatch book “In Flanders Fields.” The poem expressed the colonel’s grief after he witnessed the death of his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, 22 years old and over the many soldiers who he watched die on the Flanders battlefields which were located in an area between western Belgium and northern France. In the poem the Colonel describes how poppies grow among the rows and rows of graves. In 1918 Moina Michael, an American woman, wrote a poem of her own inn tribute to the opening lines of McCrae’s poem called; “We Shall Keep The Faith” We cherish too, the Poppy red That grows on fields where valor led, It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies Ms. Michael then adopted the custom of wearing a red poppy in memory of the sacrifices of war and also as a symbol

of keeping the faith. She was the first to wear one, and in November 1918, bought a bouquet of poppies and handed them to businessmen where she worked. She asked them to wear the poppy as a tribute to the fallen. Moina Michael thought the flowers should be used as a symbol in remembrance of the war. Her efforts resulted in the poppy being adopted as the “United States” national emblem of Remembrance by the American Legion on September 29, 1920. Although poppies are used to honor both Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day, it is traditionally done on the latter. In 1948 the US Post Office honored Ms. Michael known as the “Poppy Lady” for her humanitarian efforts and for her role in founding the National Poppy movement by issuing a red threecent postage stamp with her likeness on it. A French woman, Madam Guerin, visiting the United States, learned of the custom and took it one step further. When she returned to France she decided to hand make the red poppies and sell them to raise money for the benefit of the orphaned and destitute women and children in war torn areas of France She convinced veterans’ organizations in several countries to sell the poppy to help underprivileged children in France. In 1922 the organization of the American and French Children’s’ League was disbanded so Madame Guerin brought her campaign to the United States. Madam Guerin was still keen to raise funds for the French people who had suffered the destruction of their communities. She asked the American organization called Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) to help her with the distribution of her French-made poppies throughout the United States. That year the VFW assisted with the sale of the poppies in America to help keep up the much-needed funds for the battle-scarred areas of France. Two years later the VFW started their “Buddy” Poppy program and was selling Continued on page 28.

For more than 80 years, both the American Legion and the VFW’s Poppy and Buddy Poppy programs, respectively, have raised millions of dollars in support of veterans’ welfare and the well being of their dependents. Those red poppies are still assembled by disabled and needy veterans in VA Hospitals. The poppy’s symbolism is both powerful and compelling. The petals of red stand for the vast outpouring of blood; The yellow and black center, the mud and desolation of all battlefields; the green of the stem is symbolic of the forests, meadows and fields where generations of Americans have perished to make generations free. The stem represents the courage and determination of our fallen warriors. The assembled product, a flower, is a symbol of Resurrection, which is sure to follow. Each year around Memorial Day, Veterans of Foreign Wars members and American Legion Auxiliary members distribute millions of bright red poppies in exchange for contributions to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans. The program provides multiple benefits to the veterans and to the community. The hospitalized veterans who make the flowers are able to earn a small wage, which helps to supplement their incomes and makes them feel more self-sufficient. The physical and mental activity provides many therapeutic benefits as well. Donations are used exclusively to assist and support veterans and their families. The poppy also reminds the community of the past sacrifices and continuing needs of our veterans. The poppy has become a nationally known and recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn to honor the men and women who served and died for their country in all wars. The Chelberg & Battle American Legion Auxiliary of Sag Harbor is distributing poppies all this month and along the parade route in Sag Harbor on Memorial Day and at the Legion Hall on Bay Street. Please support our veterans, and let us never forget our obligation to those who have given so much and served so gallantly to protect this great land of ours and those of us who live here. Catherine Conroy I do all the drawers in the house. I also do the closets. I tackle all my clothes every spring. And by the time I’ve finished sorting and making everything neat I probably donate a quarter of what was there originally. Fay Gholson I mostly do the clothes. It always seems that’s what builds up the most. I go through the closets and drawers. And then I donate a whole bag of clothing when I’m through. I figure that if you’re not wearing it, maybe someone else can make use of it. Mariann Kennell I clean all the baseboards in the house. And of course all the windows need to be cleaned but only after all the pollen has been sprayed off and has died down. I wash some of the curtains and vaccuum the drapes and climb up on a ladder and clean the chandelier. Joanne Alster I change the winter clothes and swap them out for the summer clothes. The clothes are the biggest part of it. Then I get the quilts laundered and put away for next winter. The only other thing that gets done is the curtains all get washed and hung up again.

Mistrusting The System Dear Rick, I was deeply impressed with your brief coverage, May 16th 2012, of the “Can of Worms” (I assume this can is only partially opened!) Southampton Town Police are having. This looks like a doozy to me. I hope the Attorney General gets involved, and I wonder if this could overturn all those convictions of several yeas ago when 18 or 19 young Southampton Indians were arrested in a massive drug ring bust. The trickle down from there could be an avalanche. From the low man on the totem pole up through the DA’s office and especially the Justices sitting in our town and village courts, heads are turned, lies are perpetrated on the public, with over 98 percent of criminals (petty to violent repeat offenders) being offered “deals of lifetimes” by our DA’s and Justices, our public safety is compromised. Defense attorneys blatantly lie to judges; with intimate knowledge their
clients are guilty. I cannot imagine how they are able to face their children. District Attorneys consistently and without conscience or hesitation sell their victims cheaply. As “Officers of the Court” these people are bound by an oath sworn to God that they will uphold the integrity and sanctity of our Justice System. They knowingly, and almost sociopathically, do not. One bailiff I had a conversation with regarding abuse I suffered as victim of The Officers of the Court with their deals and tricks simply stated, “ They needed to clear the docket and the sentence he would have received wasn’t worth the cost of a trial, in dollars or time!” So regardless of what transpires at the lower levels of justice, the courts themselves are a main factor contributing to corruption in all our police forces, locally and nationally. What scandal would we uncover if we dug around the courthouse and were not so afraid of the dangerous egos and personality disorders of the highest in the system? Few people I know retain even a small sense of trust or comfort with the legal system and the seemingly arbitrary and irrational manner with which it functions. People simply do not trust! Integrity, credibility and trust; from the low man on the totem pole, up through the DA’s office and onward to our justices, we know they practice a calculated disregard and disrespect for the basic principles and mandates of our laws as written. I am interested in the, “personnel matter” that warranted Kiernan a suspension from his post. One might surmise that it could have been sexual harassment or a racist attack or perhaps even some physical abuse. I am suspicious of the fact that this information is allowed to be held from the public. Seems un-American to me! It is sad. When I was a boy and as a young man we knew our local cops well. We had friendly encounters and

relationships with them. We called them “Officer” and respected their names. They watched over us and were willing to reach out a truly caring helping hand to kids and people who proved deserving. In the face of China’s expansionist policies the U.S. should encourage Pacific allies, especially Japan, South Korea and India, to build up their military forces. We should rethink the proposed cuts in our military, especially the cuts to our Navy. We are down to 285 ships and might eventually have less than the 11 carrier battle groups needed to patrol the world’s oceans. Tragic Death Dominick Trionfo of Middle Island, 14, died in Peconic Bay off Mattituck Sunday in a Jet Ski accident. According to Southold Police the youngster was operating the Jet Ski when he collided with the anchor chain of his family’s boat. Click It Or Ticket This weekend the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office will be joining hundreds of law enforcement agencies throughout New York in a spring enforcement effort encouraging motorists to buckle up. Since beginning in 1999, the Buckle-Up New York “Click It or Ticket” campaign has reduced countless personal injuries and fatal crashes. In 2011, New York State surpassed previous seatbelt survey achievements, recording a 91 percent compliance rate. Nearly one in five Americans fail to buckle up regularly and too many children still don’t use their seatbelts or child safety seats. “You have too much to lose if you don’t buckle up,” said Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco. “Using a seatbelt will halve your chances of being killed or badly injured in a serious crash, and using the proper age-appropriate car seat in a passenger car will reduce your infant’s chance of fatal injury by 71 percent and your toddler’s by 54 percent,” he added. Kites For A Cure Uniting Against Lung Cancer will host its annual “Kites for a Cure,” a family kite fly to benefit lung cancer research on Saturday from 4 to 6 PM. Set for Coopers Beach, over 1000 kite flyers and lung cancer supporters are anticipated for the event, now in its sixth year. “The Village of Southampton looks forward to the ‘Kites for a Cure’ event each Memorial Day weekend,” said Southampton Mayor Mark Epley. “Everyone in attendance brings with them a hopeful spirit which is a source of comfort for those who have lost a loved one to the disease, or uplifts those currently suffering from lung cancer.” Uniting Against Lung Cancer was founded in 2001 in memory of Southampton resident Joan Scarangello, a non-smoker who lost her battle with lung cancer. Charged with Menacing The call came in at around three Sunday morning alerting police to an “unwanted” intoxicated subject. But what was probably even more unwanted was the chainsaw a Hampton Bays boozer was allegedly wielding. Cops say he was holding it over his head in a way that caused a complainant to fear for his safety. The suspect fled the area before police arrived, but they found him fairly quickly. Andrew Kristiansen, 45, is charged with misdemeanor menacing and felony criminal possession of a weapon.

Most of the speakers seemed okay with it. Last Thursday night the East Hampton Town Board held a hearing on bringing roads in two urban renewal maps into the town highway system. Roads involved include Park Street, Post Street, Valley Street, Mulford Land, Barnes Avenue, Wheelock Walk, and several others in that Northwest neighborhood.
The total cost of the improvements – paving, drainage, shoulder work -- is estimated at $915,000. The cost will be assessed to property owners with payments included in their tax bills over the course of a 15 year bond the town will float to cover the improvements. Property owners who built homes were assessed road charges when they constructed their houses, so

On May 15 the New York State Public Employees Federation released a report comparing the cost of hiring consultants to the cost of having state employees undertake the work. According to a release from PEF, “The most recent report, “New York’s Consultants: The Invisible Workforce,” reveals that from fiscal year 2008-09 to 2011-12, the state hired at least 1,300 additional consultants, for an increase of 24 percent while decreasing the state
workforce by more than 14,000 employees. And it cost the state much more money than having state employees do the same work even with the costs of benefits included.” “The state continues to waste the most money hiring consultants to do work on engineering and information technology, work that will always be there and work our members can do for far less,” said PEF President Ken Brynien. The state paid between $133.31 and $239.67 per hour for some information technology consultants.

they pay less than property owners who did not, with assessments at $288 and $1731 per year respectively. Homeowners who spoke at the hearing spoke of the downside of living on private roads – the horrible condition of the pavement, unplowed snow and ice in the winter and overgrown trees and shrubs in the summer. Paul Hatch informed the board that he’s been filling potholes, plowing snow and pruning trees in his neighborhood at his own expense since 1998. To have the town take on those tasks for under $300 a year, he said, “you can’t beat that.” Another half dozen speakers echoed
the sentiment. Just one speaker offered adamant opposition. Henry Ditmer owns some 20 vacant lots in the neighborhood and has since 1969. He said the cost for his share of the program will be “ruinous“ financially. The next step in the process involves a vote of the affected property owners to see whether to proceed with the improvements. Ditmer believes it’s not fair that even though he owns numerous parcels of land, he only gets one vote. Town Attorney John Jilnicki explained that state law governs the process and only allows a single vote per property owner. kmerrill@indyeastend.com
State employees are paid an average of $55.72 per hour, including benefits to do the same work. In light of what they say is millions in savings, PEF officials have been urging state lawmakers to require state agencies to do a cost comparison to determine whether state employees could do the same work at a lower cost. Two days after the report was released East Hampton Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson offered a resolution that could result in the outsourcing of the town’s Information Technology department. He’s calling for Requests for Proposals for IT services.
Jay Diaz, a labor relations specialist with the Civil Service Employees Association, asked the board exactly what would become of bargaining unit members if the town moved forward with outsourcing. Recalling a prior work session on the initiative, Diaz said it was mentioned that the department costs $1 million per year. He said he’d like to know how much of that is really salaries and benefits compared to the costs for software, licensing, and certifications. S chool D ays Ross Upper School The Ross varsity boys tennis team will hang yet another banner on the wall after earning their third league title in a row. The team finished the season 10-1, enduring only one loss in the last three years when they fell to Southampton in a close 4-3 match in April. On Wednesday, they compete in the Suffolk County Team Tournament. The Ross Model UN team competed at Northeast University this past weekend and walked away with an Honorable Mention and an award. A prime example is the beloved Outdoors of Amagansett, which has been in the same location for the past 15 years. Their lease has not been renewed and the local residents are up in arms. As of now, there are over 750 petitioners, including actor Alec Baldwin, demanding that the sporting goods and accessories shop be granted a renewal of their lease. Freddie Stollmack, president of Weatherproof® and long time resident of Amagansett, is proud to lend his support to these local businesses that he’s been patronizing for many years. “Having first come out to the East End in 1946 and witnessing so many changes, it’s a shame, what has happened to mom and pop retailers,” says Stollmack. Under Stollmack’s direction, Weatherproof® will be hosting an event in July celebrating the opening of one of his favorite small stores, Mary’s Marvelous. Owner and proprietor, Mary Schoenlein has been searching for an additional location for three years, but has been unsuccessful due to high rents. We’re a motel with a bar.” Siedlick railed against charges he was a Republican insider, and that the local contingent was doing him favors. “I don’t even know these people,” he said of Wilkinson and Councilwoman Theresa Quigley. But, he said Councilwoman Sylvia Overby, a Democrat, played up the political aspect even after he had a face-toface with her. “I explained to Sylvia I have no relationship with these people,” Siedlick related. “I never met them.

I told her I wanted no part in a political controversy.” Overby then called the appraiser at the top of the list on her own, he added. “We’ve invested our life savings in this,” Siedlick said. “We’re not New York City investors – we live here. We want to establish a legacy in this community.” Jones said “it will take at least eight to 10 years to get a return on our investment.” Zach Cohen, who ran unsuccessfully for town supervisor last year, charged that some sort of back room deal was made to lift a recent stop order Chief Building Inspector Tom Preiato issued. But, Jones said, Preiato made the correct determination that only some excavating work should be put on hold while the renovation of the motel be allowed to continue. Cohen charged Republican board members, a lawyer for Jones and Siedlick and the pair pressured Preiato in a closed-door meeting to lift the stop order. Siedlick said Cohen’s charges “were the most offensive of all. He was 100 percent inaccurate.” It was Overby, as the board’s liaison, who urged Preiato to stall the Ronjo project. “Tom made the proper determination,” Jones said. The District Attorney’s Office is investigating a wide range of allegations made in East Hampton. “We’re perfectly fine with the DA coming in here,” Siedlick said. Two weeks ago town attorney John Jilnicki asked the DA to investigate Cohen’s allegations, but the DA was likely sniffing around long before that. The Independent has learned Overby, Cohen, and the planning department director, Marguerite Wolffshon were recently called in for questioning. The Ronjo won’t be ready for Memorial Day weekend. “We’ve been a bit distracted,” Jones said wryly. The owners hope to open in late June. Meanwhile, “dozens of people stop by every day to say how thrilled they are,” Siedlick noted. And an impromptu petition asking the town to allow the renovation as planned drew “350 to 400 names in three days.” Jones pointed out he has owned Sole East in Montauk for six years. “We’ve been good neighbors. We’ve hosted many, many fundraising events for the community. I think most of the folks who live around Sole have good things to say about us.”

Cemetery Tour Join Tony Garro, the Bridgehampton Historical Society’s docent for a traipse through the Old Cemetery, just east of the Presbyterian Church in Bridgehampton, on Main Street, on Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. Ann Sandford, local resident and historian, described the cemetery in the Bridgehampton Heritage Area Report. “The burying ground on Main Street, an independent cemetery incorporated as the “Old Cemetery Association of Bridgehampton, contains stones with names that stand out in the hamlet’s history, as well as inscriptions which exemplify important aspects of Bridgehampton’s past.” In coordination with the society’s 2012 summer exhibits, the tour will highlight whaling captains from greater Bridgehampton. Find out about them, whether the cemetery has any affiliation with the churches on either side of it, and about the many generations of local families that have been laid to rest at this beautiful park-like spot lined with buckeye trees in downtown Bridgehampton. Tall Ships Coming To Greenport The tall ships are coming to Greenport on Memorial Day weekend. The Tall Ships Challenge Race is a series of sailing races, cruises, crew rallies and maritime festivals organized by Tall Ships America in conjunction with US and Canadian ports on the Pacific and Atlantic Coasts of North America and in the Great Lakes. Traditionally rigged sailing vessels from Canada, the US and other countries are crewed by youth (either civilians or cadets) ages 13-25 who are engaged in sail training programs under the supervision of captains and professional crewmembers. Maritime festivals in each host port give visitors a chance to board the tall ships and meet the crew and trainees and learn about the many varied opportunities to sail and travel on Tall Ships America member tall ships. Visitors can board all seven of the ships Saturday through Monday by purchasing a bracelet. Cruises are also available. The ships were in Savannah on May 7, and will continue on to Rhode Island and Nova Scotia later this summer. M.X.L.

Whether it be at the dock, barely making way, or operating at speed, how “flat” she is, is largely under the control of the skipper and he or she should be constantly aware of what trim they are assuming. Trim is best controlled by the angle you place the outboard engine relative to the transom. Usually in the throttle, there is a thumb control that when you press down, brings the propeller in closer to the transom. By bringing the propeller in closer to the transom, you force the bow down from its manufactured waterline. When you would want to do that? How about if you were heading into strong wave action? If your bow was trimmed up, the force of the waves would accentuate that, possibly making it more difficult to see - and to control the boat. Commensurately, if you press the thumb control to bring the engine up, it moves the propeller away from the transom, forcing the bow up from its manufactured waterline. Why would you do that? Well, there are a number of reasons. For one, a powered vessel’s fuel consumption improves as you reduce its wetted surface. So, as you are cruising down the bay, you can trim the engine up and save fuel at a given rate of speed. If you are willing to throw fuel efficiency to the wind, so to speak, a powered vessel simply goes faster with less of a wetted surface. And, as you bring the bow up, you reduce the wetted (in the water) surface.
Boat Squat Unless you are driving one of those “battlewagons” out there, or are involved in commercial navigation, you’ve probably never heard of boat squat. Even if you are in those situations, you still may not have heard of it - and it is critical to understanding why a boat with four inch of draft hits the bottom in five inches of water. When any boat is making way through the water, she starts by pushing a large amount of water ahead of her. If she’s a planing vessel, she’ll climb up on that wave as she picks up sufficient speed. But if she is a big ‘un, she won’t be planing anytime in

Porgies Still Running Reports this past week have been light due to the weather but there are still plenty of fish around. Bass can be found around the Ponquogue Bridge and in the Shinnecock Inlet. Boats that have drifted live baits have fared well and the guys on the jetties have picked away at them with bucktails. Fluke have been a bit tougher to come by out in Peconic and in Shinnecock. The few guys that got out the inlet didn’t do well either. Best bet is to stick it out in the bays. The blues are throughout the area with fish of three to five pounds the average. Just look for the bird action. Porgy action is great in Peconic Bay just about anywhere you want to go. Fish to three pounds are making it to the box. The blowfish are still in the canal and some out in Peconic. Small long shank hooks and small squid strips will get you a meal. Weakfish reports continue to come from the Quogue Canal and the Peconics. The fish have been up to six pounds. Capt. Scott Jeffrey East End Bait & Tackle 631-728-1744 this lifetime. She is a displacement vessel. So, this water that is getting pushed ahead returns to the side and under the boat’s bottom. As she starts to put on some way (speed), imagine this cycle of water building up speed under the ship. This causes a drop in water pressure under the boat. This causes the ship to vertically drop in the water. This is “boat squat.” For a displacement vessel, trim is different from squat. Trim is the difference of the forward and aft draft while the boat is stationary. As she gets underway and her aspect to her waterlines changes, she is affecting “squat.” Naval architects justifiably worry about whether she has forward or aft “squat” (leans forward or aft as she builds speed.) This is largely determined by her center of gravity and her block coefficient, which is the volume of the hull (V) divided by the Length of her Water Line (LWL) times the (maximum) Beam of her Water Line (BWL) times her Draft. If you draw a box around the submerged part of the ship, it is the ratio of the box volume occupied by the ship. Now, you can say that you do know squat. He didn’t think it was appropriate to address potential grievances in public. Arthur Malman, chair of the town-appointed budget and finance advisory committee reminded the town board that his group undertook an analysis of the IT department and developed recommendations for its improvement in a report filed last fall. The report notes that current IT spending, which is seen as a catalyst for the outsource effort, is “likely overstated,” due to inaccurate classification of some jobs as IT positions in the town budget. The BFAC’s report not only doesn’t call for dissolving the department and using an outside firm for technology functions, it suggests investing more money in the department, with the understanding that an $80,000 investment could generate $100,000 in annual savings. Malman cautioned that, some times, “People try to outsource something when they’re not understanding what it is.” According to town hall employees, Wilkinson and his administration have not spent time learning about how the department functions, despite campaign promises to do so with all town departments. Democratic minority members Sylvia Overby and Peter Van Scoyoc both tried to slow the process down. They said the RFP didn’t include enough information for bidders. They wanted a little more time to
