Editor’s note
HELLO summer my old friend. Some of my fondest childhood memories play out during long, hot summer days, lazing at the pool with my friends under the scorching Boland sun and spending the December holidays with my family at our favourite resort on the Sunshine Coast, where we would enjoy long walks on the idyllic beaches, and, our bodies well oiled, bask in the sun. I remember my vast collection of swimwear, from shoestring bikinis to more practical one-piece costumes. Candy stripes, frills and brights were always my favourites. My big bush of curly hair was always untamed and crisp from the sea water, and naturally highlighted by the sun. Back then I didn’t have a care in the world about how I looked. I wasn’t shy about my body. I didn’t care about my hair being an absolute mess. I didn’t care about painful sunburn. As I grew older, those carefree days started to fade and I became aware of my body and the risk factors involved with exposing my skin to the harsh sun. Swimwear shopping has become a nightmare as I constantly hear myself saying, “my bum is too fat for this, my boobs are too saggy for that, my belly is simply too unsightly”. My days of topless tanning on Clifton Beach are long gone. With a belly covered in stretch marks, breasts that have gone from perky to saggy and a firm bottom that has turned to jelly, I rarely don a swimming costume when I feel brave enough to venture on to the beach. Due to those carefree, sunblock-free days in the sun, my once blemish-free skin has paid the price, as my skin is now marked with pigmentation. But it’s not all gloomy when I see the gorgeous collections of swimwear now available on the market. Swimwear that makes this mamma of three feel sexy and stylish again, and head on down to the beach with confidence ... with the essential sun protection of course. This summer, no matter how old you or what body shape you are, enjoy it in all your beautiful splendour.
Get your glow on
The key ingredients to achieve smooth glowing skin is exfoliation and moisturiser. Winter’s cold leaves your skin dry and dehydrated. Cracked and flaky skin needs hydration and intense moisturising in order to restore. GERRY CUPIDO
Exfoliate
Moisturise By exfoliating you’ve stripped that dead layer of skin cells and without the proper after care your skin dehydrates especially if you do so more than twice a week. The only way to combat that and lock in moisture is to achieve that glow, is to lash on moisturiser. Reach for rich luxurious body butters and liberally smooth in a generous amount into your skin. Natural oils such as coconut, almond or olive oil are ideal for those who have very dry skin and need additional help. Apply to damp skin immediately after your bath. Pay special attention to areas that tend to extra dry parts like your knees and elbows.
Your first step is to rid your skin of dead skin cells by exfoliating. The build-up of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin makes your skin look rough and dry. Exfoliating gives your skin a more smooth and healthy appearance. There are a variety of ways to exfoliate in the comfort of your own home. Brush: A bristle brush, some come with long handles, can be used on dry skin before a bath or can be used with a body wash as part of your shower routine. Exfoliating glove: These are great if you struggle holding onto slippery brushes. Simply slip on the gloves and lather up with soap or body wash. It’s the perfect way to work large areas like your thighs, legs or arms. Scrubs: There are so many different scrubs on the market but home-made scrubs are just as effected, and cheaper. All you have to do is apply the scrub to the skin and gently, using circular motions, work it into the skin. Rinse with warm water and you’re ready to glow. Exfoliation encourages skin turnover which results in brighter skin and allows for better absorption of moisturisers and serums.
Fake tan Skin that hasn’t seen the sun in months results in pale and pasty colour. Now that the sun is out and you’re eager to catch some rays you find yourself in a catch-22. You want to expose your skin to get some colour but you don’t want to head out onto the beach with your pale winter skin. Also, who wants to spend hours in the harmful sun. A quick fix for this dilemma is a fake tan. Whether you opt to self-tan at home or go to a tanning salon for a spray on tan or a session in a sunbed, this will at least make your skin appear sunkissed – like you’ve just come back from an island holiday.
l a v o m Hair Re GERRY CUPIDO
HIDING hairy legs or a fuzzy bikini area? During winter, our bodies are covered, so unless you’re one of the few ladies who consistently keep their legs silky smooth throughout winter, you probably have rather furry legs. The same goes for your underarm and bikini areas. Depending on your preference and pain threshold, here are few hair removal methods.
Shaving This is one of the most popular, easy and pain-free methods, but there are a few things you need to know when shaving. It’s best to shave in the morning. Always use a moisturising shaving foam. If you don’t have shaving foam, use hair conditioner. Do NOT use normal bar soap. Replace your razor blades after five uses. Shave downward, in the direction of your hair growth, instead of up.
Laser If your beauty budget allows for it, laser hair removal is a more permanent (after a number of sessions) solution. It’s a medical procedure that involves the use of a laser beam that passes through the skin to target individual hair follicles, damaging them and slowing further hair growth.
Waxing If you want slower regrowth and have a high pain threshold, then waxing is a great option. Before waxing be aware of the following: The hairs shouldn’t be too long or too short (6mm is a good length). Avoid getting waxed during your period, when your body is more sensitive. Take a painkiller before your appointment in order to help take the edge off. Ridding your bikini area of stray hairs is essential when wearing those tiny bikinis. Depending on how much hair you want removed, the different terms for waxing that area can be daunting.
A quick quide to waxing shapes Regular Bikini Wax This is your basic, starter bikini wax that removes the hairs next to the bikini line only. Full Bikini Wax Takes the regular bikini wax past the bikini line and the hairs from the top to create a neat triangle. French Bikini Wax All the hair is removed in the front, leaving just a small patch or strip of hair. Brazilian wax Removes all hair, front to back, leaving just a patch of hair in the front in any shape you want. Hollywood wax Don’t want any genital hair at all? Then this is the one for you. All hair is removed from front to the back. This is definitely not recommended for beginners.

NOT too long ago the plus-size girl, the one who didn’t fit the conventional swimsuit model mould, dreaded going to the beach. And when she did, she kept herself covered. I know, because I am that girl! That was then. Now ladies of all shapes and sizes are getting out and proudly embracing every curve. Better yet, we are loving the clothing brands that have incorporated swimwear to accommodate all sizes. Ladies can step out in style and confidence. Online fashion brand StyleMode has designed a swimwear collection that suits all body shapes. Which means that no matter your size, you can be as stylish as the girl chilling next to you on the beach. From polka dots to animal prints, the collection available at www.stylemode.co.za.

SOMETIMES, okay often, a girl doesn’t feel comfortable walking from her car to the beach in her tiny bikini and so much flesh on display. This is where cover-ups come in handy. Even though long kaftans and tropical print sarongs have their place on the beach, there are so many more styles to pick from. From sheer flowing pants to frilly wrap dresses, your cover-up is the perfect preview to the grand bikini reveal. Here are a few of our favourite styles to choose from, all available at www.stylemode. co.za.

GERRY CUPIDO AFTER a blissful hour on the beach, having taken pictures of everything from the shimmering ocean to the pretty shells, you realise you have only 10% battery power and you haven’t taken a single selfie. No amount of fumbling in your beach bag will produce the powerbank you know you left on the kitchen table. For some, this could mark the end of a very short beach outing. A powerbank is just one of the essential items no beach bag should be without. Besides the obvious sun hat, beach towel and umbrella, here are 10 musthave items you shouldn’t leave home without.
- Wet wipes -
-Hydrating facial spray -
Pop a pack of wet wipes, even better sanitising wipes, in your bag for those unexpected spills and sticky ice cream fingers.
Not only do facial mists or sprays give your face that instant dewy glow, they also cool and hydrate your skin at the same time.
- Hair accessories Whether it be a headscarf, headband or hairclip, no beach bag should be without one of these. Unless you have movie star, beach-ready hair, the tools can rescue a bad hair situation. Keep them in a separate little bag so they’re easier to find.
-Sunglasses - Eco-friendly refuse bag -
Not only do they look cool and protect your eyes from harsh midday sunrays but you can hide behind dark lenses while secretly trying to check out that cute guy on the beach.
Don’t be that litter bug who leaves their trash on the beach. Pop them in your refuse bag and take it back with you. Dispose of it in a decent, environmentallyfriendly manner.
- Cash When you’re out on the beach and the ice cream guy comes around, trust me, he’s not going to whip out a card machine. On the beach cash is king. Not only for tempting treats but for that the extra water you forgot to pack.
-Sunblock -
Come on guys, this is a no-brainer and if you don’t know why, then you have no business on the beach in the first place.
-Snacks -
-Water There’s no way you can spend time under the blazing sun without keeping your body hydrated. Pack as much water as you can. You’re meant to drink at least 8 glasses a day, more when you’re out in the heat. Pop a few bottles in the freezer the night before.
- A good book We all have that one book we’ve been meaning to finish. Yes, that one you started three months ago. With your toes in the sand and a cool summer breeze, you’re in the best place to get back into that book.
I’m sure you thought the chicken wrap you packed at 9am was going to be a great treat, until you unwrap it and it’s warm and yucky with a crunch of sand. Instead of packing a full-on lunch, take snacks instead. Think raisins, nuts, protein bars and fruit.
GERRY CUPIDO LEAVING home without applying sunblock is as sinful as going to bed with make-up on. In fact, it’s far more dangerous! We all know the importance of sunblock and the effects that harsh sun rays have on our skin, yet we still risk permanent skin damage by not covering up. Here’s a quick reminder why the “never leave home without sunblock” rule is one not be ignored. It blocks harmful UV rays With the ozone layer depleting, we are at risk of sun damage from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunscreen reduces the severity of sunburn.
Safeguard your skin
The risk of skin cancer is reduced Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer but the risk can be reduced greatly by applying sunscreen every day. Prevents premature ageing of your skin Overexposure to the harmful UV rays causes skin damage which caused photoageing. Discoloured leathery-looking skin is characteristic of sundamaged skin. The sun causes a breakdown of collagen causing fine lines and sagging. Sunblock helps to maintain even skin tone as well.
Karen Bester, medical trainer at Lamelle Research Laboratories, has these tips for staying safe in the sun this summer. l Apply sunscreen every day before you go into the sun. l Even a high SPF does not give you 100% protection, so if you are outdoors and in the sun, re-apply your sun protection products every two to three hours. l Re-apply sun protection products when you are swimming or sweating (even waterresistant sunscreens – they’re water-resistant, not waterproof). l Remember the tip of your nose and the tips of your ears when applying cream. l Wear sun-protective clothing – broad-brim hats and long-sleeve shirts. l Stay out of the sun between noon and 3pm. l Drink extra antioxidants if you plan on being in the sun. l If you are a high risk for burning (very fair skin) or skin cancer (you or a direct family member have received treatment for skin cancer), look for a product that will give you more than just UVA and UVB protection. Finding the perfect sunscreen can often be a daunting task as there are so many different products on the market right now.
New technology sun products can do more then protect skin – they can enhance its appearance and keep it looking dewy and youthful
Here are our top five products we’re loving this summer:
1
1. OVELLE D3
An oral supplement with Pygnogenol and activated Vitamin D, it increases the skin’s resistance to UVA by 80%. It significantly improves the appearance of melasma (hormonal pigmentation), and delays premature ageing.
2. VICHY IDEAL SOLEIL 3-IN-1 TINTED ANTI-DARK SPOTS CARE SPF50+
2
3
Unifies instantly thanks to universal mineral pigments. Correct dark spots day after day thanks to its pigmented/ coloured formula enriched in PheResorcinol, an innovative active ingredient against spots and protects from UVB/UVA rays.
3. LA ROCHE-POSAY ANTHELIOS XL DRY TOUCH SPF50+
This sunscreen has a double anti-shine action, immediate absorption and an ultra-dry finish that leaves no white marks on the skin. This dry touch sunscreen is non-greasy and suitable for oily skin type.
4. DERMALOGICA PRISMA PROTECT SPF30
4 5
This sunscreen’s formula does more than defend skin against UV light – it uses it to the skin’s advantage. Light-activated intelligent technology converts visible light into increased skin radiance for a natural glow.
5. SKINCEUTICALS PHYSICAL MATTE UV DEFENCE SPF 50
It offers a triple threat broadspectrum sunscreen. It provides a smooth matte finish on the skin even in humid conditions, making it the ideal summer bag go-to.
GERRY CUPIDO YOU might wonder why any woman would go to the beach wearing make-up. Well, some of us simply can’t do without a bit of mascara or a lick of lipstick. Yes of course no one wants to do the sexy walk out of the sea looking like a hot mess with black tears of mascara running down your cheeks and a foundation mudslide. Thankfully there are a few make-up tricks to avoid all of that. Waterproof mascara and eyeliner This is a no-brainer. A 100% failproof way to avoid the dreaded ink spill. It doesn’t mean you should go over-board. One or two layers of mascara will do. Stick to lightweight foundation Give matt foundations a fat miss and please leave the powder compact at home. How can your skin glow when it’s covered in a thick layer of foundation set with powder? In a few hours it’ll look like a wet cement mess. Tinted foundations are the way to go. If you don’t have any, mix a drop of foundation into your sunblock for a hint of coverage AND sun protection. Swop powder for creamy blush When it comes to that one item I simply can’t leave home without, it has to be blush. It instantly gives your face a healthy rosy glow. Like foundation, powder blush is a no-no. Take it easy with blush though, and bronzer. Skip the lipstick I’m a red lipstick girl, so this is a difficult one, but since I’m not so keen on sandy red lips, it makes it just a tad bit easier. For those who love their high gloss lippies, I would advise you to leave those at home. Gloss is a sand magnet! So how does a girl get a hint of colour on the lips? Lip stains. Lip stains are long-lasting and smudge-free. Here’s a little trick I like to use with my lip stain. Lightly dab some on your cheeks instead of your cream blush for a more stay-fast solution.
