Editor’s note IT’S 5.30am. I am enjoying my morning cup of coffee while I watch the sunrise at Mdluli Safari Lodge. And I’m looking forward to the guided bush walk to learn about the Kruger National Park’s flora and fauna. Our guide Lennox shares insightful information about elephants and their contribution to the environment; the small 5 (elephant shrew, ant lion, rhinoceros beetle, buffalo weaver and the leopard tortoise) and cake, a fancy word for animal stools. As he explains the benefits of the marula tree, I take in the sights, smell and sounds around me. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be right now. Outdoor activities like these bring me such joy, making the aches days later worth it. I enjoy hikes, glamping, canoeing, segway tours and guided walks. With the summer holidays here, many travellers will be venturing outdoors more frequently. Our December 2020 issue celebrates the great outdoors with tips and tricks to make your exploring memorable. If you are planning a road trip with your loved ones, check out our scenic drives feature that showcases some of the most picturesque landscapes. For those with no budget, we feature free activities in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town that travellers can enjoy during the holidays. Camping enthusiasts will enjoy our 5 budget-friendly camping spots feature as well as our camping essential guide, which has everything you need to make your trip extra special. I hope this edition inspires you to embark on an outdoor adventure. If you do, wear a mask and travel safe.

So, whether a local or a visitor, why not use this time to come and experience it all - the natural backdrops, diverse cultures, the taste of our unique range of cuisine and the myriad of attractions for which KwaZulu-Natal is renowned. Rest assured, our tourism trade partners have in place all the necessary COVID-19 precaution protocols, so enabling you to relax, be safe and enjoy a much-needed break from the tedium of isolation. I would appeal to visitors to and in our beautiful province to be responsible, to show restraint, good judgement and, above all, to always adhere to the prevailing COVID-19 protocols, whilst enjoying a well-deserved holiday. I take this opportunity to extend to you and your loved ones, a wonderful festive season and a very happy and prosperous 2021.

Essentials you need for an outdoor adventure CLINTON MOODLEY

BEFORE you embark on an outdoor adventure, there are a few items you will require, depending on where you are going and how long you will spend at the destination

A PAIR OF HIKING BOOTS

Invest in good quality hiking boots to help you navigate the rough terrain. Your feet will thank you later!

A BACKPACK

A backpack needs to be comfortable, and the weight should be determined by the number of hours you are out and about. The bag will help store all your essentials, including additional clothing during short or overnight trips.

PACK SOME FOOD AND WATER

Depending on the length of your outdoor adventure, always have ample food and water in your backpack. Activities like hikes can be strenuous, so try to fuel up regularly.

A HAT

With the weather getting warmer, a wide-brimmed hat is an essential item. A floppy hat is ideal if you are going to be in the sun for extended periods.

SUNSCREEN

Always remember to apply plenty of sunscreen, not forgetting the back of your ears and neck.

INSECT REPELLENT

Depending on where you are travelling to, carry insect repellent to apply before your adventure. Some areas in South Africa and surrounding countries have malaria outbreaks, so speak to your doctor or a specialised travel doctor on whether you should take a prophylactic and what products are best to purchase.

POWER BANK

Power banks come in handy when the juice on your device runs low, especially if you are travelling to locations with limited electricity supply.

MEDICATION

Pack your medicine as medical emergencies can take place at any time. Speak to your doctor about what medication is best to take with you and ensure that you get it before you embark on an outdoor trip.

MASK

Last but not least, always wear your mask. Carry a few spare masks when travelling.
