Quality emergency care improves patient survival

Quality emergency care improves patient survival

THE quality of emergency care provided by emergency medical services personnel, as well as by doctors and nurses in emergency departments, plays a significant role in a patient’s ultimate outcome. It has been shown internationally that taking severely injured patients to an appropriately accredited trauma centre in the shortest possible time, reduces mortality and improves the survival rate and medical outcomes overall. “The accreditation of Netcare St Anne’s Hospital as a level 1 trauma centre by the Trauma Society of South Africa (TSSA) more than a year ago, together with the wider TSSA accreditation system, has its THE quality ofproved emergency care provided by value and strengthened emergency medimedical services personnel, as well as cal servicesemergency across KwaZulu-Natal. “The hospital is the only private facil- in emergency departments, by doctors and nurses ity in the province with the highest level playsThe a significant role in a patient’s ultimate of accreditation. specialised services It has been provided atoutcome. the centre to people who have shown internationally that been critically injured have suffered a having the required skills and facilities taking a or severely injured patient to an appropriately life-threatening medical incident have in place to provide round-the clock mulcentreti-disciplinary in the shortest contributedaccredited to many livestrauma being saved, care to allpossible levels of trauma often against great reduces odds. Your health and safety are a priority to us Public concern about the safety of patients in healthcare facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic is still keeping a number of persons from seeking emergency medical care, consulting a doctor for chronic or acute conditions, going for their regular health screenings, and postponing surgery or other treatment requiring admission to hospital. Postponing necessary medical care may, however, compromise your health and result in you developing more serious health conditions – so it is important that you put your health first. Because your health and safety is as important to us as it is to you, Netcare emergency departments, hospitals and Netcare 911 are strictly maintaining comprehensive COVID-19 safety measures to provide you with the best and safest care. You are in safe hands with us. In addition, the trauma facility should also be able to accept patients both via helicopter or road ambulance. “TSSA accreditation requirements are strict. The facility must be equipped to specific standards, staffed by appropriately qualified and trained emergency doctors and nursing personnel, and a trauma surgeon must be available 24/7 to co-ordinate the multi-disciplinary team. A level 1 facility is also required to have an educational trauma prevention programme in place,” added Murphy. This enables the emergency medical crews to continue providing care to both adult and paediatric patients at an ICU level throughout the patient’s transfer to the closest appropriate hospital for further care, giving them the best possible chance,” added Stanton. In addition to Netcare St Anne’s Hospital, the TSSA has accredited the following Netcare trauma centres in KZN: Netcare St Augustine’s and Netcare uMhlanga hospitals have level 2 accreditation, while Netcare Alberlito, Netcare The Bay and Netcare Kingsway hospital all have level 3 accreditation.

FROM its humble beginnings more than three decades ago when it first opened its doors as a small day clinic in Port Shepstone, nobody could have envisaged that Hibiscus Private Hospital would grow into the 224-bed, state-of-the-art private hospital group it is today. The hospital’s journey has been one of steady growth. While it began as a small 10-bedroom day clinic and hospital, demand saw it expand into a 40-bed acute facility known as Hibiscus Private Hospital. Construction of this new 54-bed, two-theatre facility began in February 2018 – and on April 20, 2020, the Hibiscus Hospital Group successfully opened the latest addition to its portfolio: the ultra-modern and cost-efficient Hibiscus Hospital Cato Ridge. “In these exciting times, with the ongoing expansion of the Hibiscus Hospital Group, we would like to thank every doctor, patient, staff member, shareholder and all other stakeholders for their continued support and dedication. Without you, we would not have reached this fantastic milestone,” said Richard Mills, Hibiscus Hospital CEO. “In addition, we would like to thank all of our front line healthcare workers and all other staff and essential service providers who have dedicated their time and efforts during these extraordinary times dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.”
