Science awards showcase SA research talents The prestigious NSTF-South32 Awards for outstanding contributions to science, engineering, technology (SET) and innovation in South Africa took place on September 30, 2021. This 23rd celebration of South African research and innovation excellence stood out not just for the exceptional array of talent, skills and success stories, but also for the complex times in which this talent had to work. As Jansie Niehaus, Executive Director of the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) points out: “Awards for scientific research are more important than ever. Researchers are working under increasingly constrained conditions.

“They are teaching online, juggling incredible workloads, and doing all this while dealing with severely cut research funding. It’s so important that we recognise people who have risen above these constraints and achieved excellence nonetheless. “We want to highlight the talent in this country and ignite further research and investment.” NSTF is the non-profit stakeholder body for all innovation organisations in South Africa. Representing SET as a single body, it is an independent, collaborative platform that advances and embodies continued conversations around science.

Science awards showcase SA research talents continued from the previous page The national NSTF-South32 Awards are the largest science, engineering, technology (SET) and innovation awards in South Africa. They are known as the “Science Oscars” and were the first science awards in the country. An important aspect of the awards is the showcasing of South African SET and innovation to the public, which includes the year-long engagement programme between award winners, students and learners, called the NSTF Share ‘n Dare programme. The NSTF Share ‘n Dare programme forms part of the NSTF-South32 Awards. It provides platforms for award winners to act as role models and ambassadors for innovation. This includes experienced scientists, engineers, innovators, science communicators, engineering capacity developers, and organisational managers/leaders, as well as data and research managers. The winners share knowledge with youth and communities, inspiring young people to pursue studies and careers in SET and innovation. Showcase youth in science continued from the previous page The National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) promotes science, engineering, technology, (SET), including mathematics and innovation among the youth. This is important because SET subjects open doors for learners to pursue fulfilling careers. The future of SET and innovation depends on young people being inspired to explore the subjects, study courses and find exciting careers. The NSTF Brilliants programme identifies, recognises and nurtures talent from the basic education sector (Grade 12) and exposes these young “brilliant” minds to the professional research environment through the NSTF-South32 Awards event. The programme is designed to motivate talented young people in order to realise their full potential, assist them where possible with bursaries to enable them to study further in SET fields. It is sponsored by South32 and the Department of Science and Innovation. This year, The Lewis Foundation partnered with the NSTF Brilliants programme to include awards to nine first-year students in “Biological and Environmental Sciences” (selected according to the same criteria as the Brilliants students), thereby recognising South Africa’s future conservation champions.
