READERS’ CHOICE BEST OF THE BEST 2023 READERS’CHOICE 2023 Tuesday, April 30, 2024

Congratulations to the winners Giving consumers their say in choosing ‘the best’

TO DATE, reports say more than 100 journalists have been gunned down or killed by collapsing buildings and the airstrikes of warfare in Gaza.

The head of Al Jazeera’s newsroom in Gaza and his son were killed in the early weeks of the war. The sound of fiery drones has separated thousands of mothers and children in the ongoing conflict. Every so often, humanity is tested with the call to stand up against injustice and suffering. Journalists are the eyes of the world.

Our own democracy is tested when voices of women and girls are shut down, when minority communities are ignored and racialism is rampant. The work of the press is to stand up to injustice. It is also to educate and entertain our readership.

The Readers’ Choice Awards are an opportunity to give back to readers.

Over the years, our readers have walked away with hundreds if not millions of rands in cash and prizes.

Our readers have trusted us and have stood behind the work of journalism.

This year, being an election year, is an important one for journalism.

The Readers’ Choice Awards tagline “the choice is yours” can also be used to describe our elections coverage.

I wish our winners the best of luck in their future endeavours.

For those who didn’t win, we look forward to seeing you in the future.

Journalism lives!

THE Readers’ Choice competition started in 2000 – successfully empowering consumers to have their say regarding the quality and level of service they receive from businesses, retailers and service providers.

They get the chance to vote

HOW

for their favourite businesses, service providers or items in the various categories of the competition – and also stand to win prizes in The Star Readers’ Choice draw. Readers have two months to vote for their favourite entity/ item in “best” categories, which include Best Services, Shopping and Entertainment. At the end of this period, the votes for the nominees are tallied before the winners and runners-up of each category are announced and published here, in The Star Readers’ Choice supplement.

THE COMPETITION WORKS

READERS had to fill in at least 15 categories to be eligible for the competition and the Readers’ Choice draw, in which participants stand the chance to win cash prizes sponsored by Auto & General as well as other great prizes.

Entries had to be submitted online. By giving consumers the opportunity to endorse their “favourites”, the competition serves as invaluable feedback

to the nominees regarding the quality of their services or products.

As they say, “there’s always room for improvement” – and businesses and service providers can always strive to improve on their performances based on consumers’ perceptions of their levels of service.

It is hoped that at the end of the day, the consumer gets a better deal.

• Jacobus Smit won two nights for two people at Makalali Main Lodge – valued at R20 500.

• R Smith won two Lion & Safari Park guided tour vouchers.

• Mr Clayton won two Lion & Safari Park guided tour vouchers.

• ME StoneStreet won two Lion & Safari Park guided tour vouchers.

• K Atkins won two Lion & Safari Park selfdrive vouchers.

Every attempt is made to be fair by including as many categories as possible, in order to give everyone a good shot at winning or at being nominated as runners-up.

Businesses have given the competition the thumbs up for providing customers with the opportunity to give them constructive feedback. This demonstrates that Readers’ Choice is a win-win challenge.

• MA Salee won two Lion & Safari self-drive vouchers.

• Nikki Coventry won a Mangwanani Spa voucher valued at R1 800.

• Angel Khosa won a R1 000 Essence voucher.

• RD Moonsamy won a R1 000 Essence voucher.

• Geraldine Halverson won a R1 000 Essence voucher.

Auto & General is backed by the promise of commitment

AUTO & General Insurance was recognised as the “best of the best” in two categories in The Star Readers’ Choice Awards. The insurer says it’s an honour to once again be acknowledged as the Best Car Insurance provider and Best Insurance Company (personal) – and extends its gratitude and appreciation to the voters.

“Auto & General was launched in South Africa in 1985. Since then, our commitment to our people, customers, broker partners, communities and country has been unwavering. We are committed to being there for our customers when it matters most and this has allowed us to stand the test of time,” says Johanni Jennings, head of marketing at Auto & General.

In an age where dedication is a hassle and where relationships are measured in likes, commitment is rare. Yet, commitment has always been Auto & General’s currency – and making good has always been its promise.

“In a world full of uncertainty, we promise certainty. In a world full of unpredictability, we promise reliability.

“This is a promise we make to each and every customer, and the reason why we exist as a business,” adds Jennings.

The insurer’s focus on customer-centricity and servicereliability is known as the “Auto & General Difference” – ensuring that customers are insured right, that customers and broker partners are

Dotsure Pet Insurance voted ‘Best Pet Insurance Company’ for 2023

DOTSURE.co.za was recently announced the winner of The Star Readers’ Choice “Best Pet Insurance Company” category.

Winners are selected after the culmination of a competition in which readers and consumers nominate their favourite businesses in various featured categories. The business that accrues the most votes wins the category title. This is the third time dotsure.co.za has proudly received this accolade.

“We thank our clients and The Star readers for their recognition and acknowledgement of our commitment to providing the highest levels of customer service, budget-friendly pet insurance and a variety of choice product options to fit the needs of our fans and their pets,” says Glen Anderson, managing executive, dotsure.co.za.

“From our passionate call centre staff to connecting with our fans on social media and the many community initiatives involving veterinary clinics and professionals, the dotsure. co.za family strives daily to be the number one pet insurance

company in South Africa.”

Sharing love through wholehearted pet care, dotsure. co.za’s Soft Landings initiatives mobilise staff, vet partners and communities to help animals and pet owners.

By encompassing responsibility to do good, think good and be good, dotsure.co.za has raised millions for the Animal AntiCruelty League and paid monthly vet bills for the SA Guide-Dogs Association, while continuing to feed a shelter puppy for a month each time a pet insurance policy is bought online.

Referrals or personal word of mouth experiences offer potential customers a base for consideration when deciding which company to insure with. Votes by South Africans from all walks of life determine market leaders – and make The Star Readers’ Choice Awards a trusted testament to dotsure.co.za’s commitment to placing every customer at the heart of its business. serviced right, and that when “suddenly” happens, customers are settled right with a dedicated claims consultant, timeous communication, access to a panel of vetted service providers and a lifetime guarantee on repairs. These commitments are backed by a service promise.

“Loss tends to dominate the insurance narrative. However, if your entire house suddenly burns down and hope lies scattered in the rubble, we are the ones who are there to help pick up the pieces and put lives back together.

“This is our promise – amid the chaos, we promise to restore calm and hope,” concludes Jennings.

‘DRIVERS LOVE US, AND WE LOVE YOU!’

A thank you message from Cartrack

“WHAT a privilege! Thank you to everyone for voting Cartrack as the Best Vehicle Tracking System. We’re immensely proud to be the top vehicle recovery and fleet management solution for South Africans – and we are deeply grateful for your ongoing support.

“No matter where you’re headed, we want to make sure you’re safe when travelling on South African roads. Winning this award has inspired us to keep making your life easier and being there for you when you need us most.

“So, on that fateful day when you’re stuck on the side of the road needing petrol so that you can pick up your little girl from school; or you and your partner have had your vehicle stolen; or you’re involved in an accident and need an ambulance or recovery team; or on those days when you’re anxiously waiting for the moment your loved ones pull up safely and park at their destination –we’ve got your back.

“But today is not just about our wins; it is about yours too. Whether you’ve used your Cartrack safety scorecard to prove you’re the better driver, used your eco report to cut down on your carbon emissions, or finally got on top of that admin with our digital logbook – you’re a winner too.

“A heartfelt thank you from all of us: we couldn’t have reached this milestone without you.

“Drivers love us, and we love you –cheers to another year of wins!

“PS: If you’ve ever wondered how your online-ordered sneakers ended up at your doorstep, it’s time to check out our fleet management solutions.”

Steps to safeguard against personal losses

RAPIDLY increasing interest rates and cost-of-living expenses are placing immense pressure on already struggling consumers. However, reducing your insurance cover or cancelling your policy to improve cash flow may seem costeffective now, but not when the time comes that you need to claim.

This is the opinion of Karen Rimmer, head of distribution at PSG Insure, who shares some steps to safeguard yourself against financial losses.

SUFFICIENT COVER

“You may think that simply having insurance offers you enough protection. The reality is that your level of cover might not be insufficient – and when an unforeseen disaster such as a fire strikes, submitting a claim only to find that you aren’t fully covered, or having your claim repudiated, can be financially and emotionally devastating,” says Rimmer. Be sure to consider all relevant risks, and to allocate the necessary budget to adequately cover your home.

ACCURATE VALUES

Many South Africans tend to overlook the fact that assets covered under a household contents policy need to be insured for their current replacement value – and not for the amount they cost you when you bought them. This highlights the importance of revising your sum insured on an annual basis to keep up with inflation and other increasing costs.

ADEQUATE CAR INSURANCE

To avoid placing yourself in

financial distress, it is essential you have adequate car insurance in place. Your policy should provide cover if you were negligent and caused an accident, as the other party would be able to hold you liable for any damages to their vehicle as well as medical costs.

“Given the high rate of accidents in South Africa, not having the right vehicle cover is simply not a risk that anyone can afford to take,” says Rimmer.

Another way to avoid financial strain is to ensure that any expensive items that you keep in your vehicle, such as your laptop, tablets or cell phone, are covered under an all-risk policy and are always concealed in an enclosed storage area, such as the cubbyhole or boot – whether you are driving or the vehicle is parked.

UPDATES

It’s critical you inform your adviser as soon as possible on any significant changes in your circumstances. This would also include letting them know about a different regular driver of your vehicle, or specifying an expensive item.

Financial tips to consider when buying a new car

More than half a million South Africans bought new cars during 2023.

This is despite ever-increasing interest and inflation rates, and soaring cost of living, fuel and car prices.

And yet, even with around a million road accidents being reported annually, only 35% of South African motorists have insurance. This means that if you’re unlucky enough to be in an accident, there’s a high probability you won’t be able to claim against the other driver for damage to your car – even if they are at fault.

If you cause an accident and you’re one of the uninsured drivers, you’ll be personally liable for all of your damage as well as any third-party damages.

So, given that buying a new car is an expensive exercise, and insuring it is an essential additional cost, how do you ensure that the car you buy suits your needs and your budget in the long run?

Below are some tips to help you:

ASK QUESTIONS

It’s important to ask the right questions. If you’re financing your new car, shop around for the best interest rate.

Figure out whether you can afford the repayments if the interest rate continues to climb. Ask for a breakdown of how much interest you’ll save if you pay the car off sooner.

Check whether you can fix the interest rate for the duration of the finance period.

INSURANCE

If your car is financed, you must have comprehensive insurance for it. You won’t be able to drive it off the showroom floor without having proof that it’s insured.

Of course, the other good reason for having comprehensive insurance is so that you can claim for loss and damage if your car is stolen or hi-jacked, damaged or written-off in an accident, or gets dented by hail, among other things.

MAINTENANCE

Most new cars come with a manufacturer’s warranty or maintenance contract, which covers the cost of regular services and parts that fail to work as they should.

If you’re buying a car without these contracts, you’ll need to factor saving for its maintenance into your monthly budget.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Don’t forget your fuel costs. If you drive long distances, or if all your driving is in stopstart peak-hour traffic, it’s worthwhile to check a car’s fuel efficiency before buying it. Take your lifestyle into account. If you head for hills on weekends with your bike on the roof-rack, a low-slung sports car isn’t going to be your best bet.

Likewise, if you’re planning on starting a family any time soon, a convertible wouldn’t be a good buy.

And, if you do most of your driving in peak rush hour, an automatic model would be a lot easier to drive than one with a manual clutch. Before you sign on the dotted line for a new set of wheels, make sure you’ve ticked all the boxes and checked your budget. The last thing you want is to commit to an asset that you can’t afford in its entirety.

Beginner’s guide to food and wine pairings

THE world of wine can be pretty intimidating. From full-bodied reds to crisp dry white wines, the options on a wine menu are endless. Things get even trickier when you add food to the equation. Which wine goes well with a sirloin steak and which one is best enjoyed with lamb loin chops? If you’re wondering how to pair food and wine, there are plenty of pairing methods to consider. But before you weigh up your options, it’s best to familiarise yourself with a few terms.

COMMON TERMS

• Acidity: The liveliness in wine that activates our salivary glands.

• Body: A sensation that describes the weight and fullness of wine in the mouth. Wine can be light, medium or full-bodied.

• Dry: Wine that contains little to no sugar.

• Tannin: Chemical compounds in wines that leave a bitter, dry and puckery feeling in the mouth.

There are plenty of ways to approach wine and food pairings, but all these pairings fall into either congruent or complementary pairings.

CONGRUENT PAIRINGS

With congruent pairings, the food and wine share several compounds or flavours. This could be a sweet wine paired with a sweet dish, or a red wine with a buttery aftertaste paired with a buttery steak dish. The guiding principle with congruent pairings is to make sure the flavour of the food doesn’t overwhelm the wine.

One of the benefits of congruent pairings is that they allow the wine and food to enhance each other’s flavour. If you’re looking to create congruent pairings, red wines are your best bet.

With aromas and flavours ranging from cherry to smoky, red wines are diverse and

easy to pair with many popular dishes. For instance, a glass of full-bodied Syrah wine shares a similar flavour profile with some of your favourite grilled meats – making it a great congruent pairing.

COMPLEMENTARY PAIRINGS

Complementary pairings, on the other hand, are based on food and wine combinations with no compounds or flavours in common. Instead, wine is paired with food that complements its flavour. The flavours in the wine are balanced by the food’s contrasting elements.

Rosé, white and sparkling wines are excellent choices for complementary pairings. A sweet white wine paired with a spicy meal allows the sugar in the wine to balance out the dish’s spiciness.

Salty dishes are often paired with sweet white wine. The saltiness of the food brings out the wine’s fruity taste and aromas. Like with most culinary tips and tricks, opinions differ. Think of this guide as a rule of thumb, helping you ease your pairing dilemmas. Personal taste will dictate a lot – so eat and drink to your heart’s content and don’t be afraid to try new combinations.

Top tips for keeping up with food trends

WHEN it comes to the food and beverage industry, you can never accurately predict what trend will become the next big thing.

This is why it is important for hoteliers and restaurateurs to remain on their toes and be ready to capitalise on the newest crazes.

Here are some of the things you can do to keep up with the latest trends:

SOCIAL MEDIA

One thing a lot of the food trends have in common is that they photograph beautifully, which means they will be all over Instagram.

Stay active on and checking social media will give you a peek at what is up and coming in the food world. A great place to start is by following hashtags on Instagram.

By doing this, you will receive highlights of the top posts under that hashtag.

Also ensure that you follow food influencers in your area, as well as major geographies. Both could offer valuable insights for your business.

EXPERIMENT AND TEST

You can use your kitchen as a laboratory to test new ideas and recipes as well as try new combinations, methods and presentations – and see how they work.

You can also test your creations on your staff, friends, family or loyal customers, and get their feedback and suggestions. By doing this, you can refine your skills, discover new possibilities and create original dishes that suit your brand and vision.

THINK CONCEPT

Be sure to take your brand and concept into consideration when implementing a food trend at your restaurant.

Just because an ingredient or a dish is trending does not mean it

is something you should follow –especially if it does not align with your brand.

Trends, as exciting as they may seem, have to make sense for your restaurant’s brand; otherwise, they simply will not work.

USE GUEST FEEDBACK

Check how various menu items are performing. Watch to see how guests react to new menu items and see how well they are selling. This information can help you determine what needs to be changed and what has the potential to become part of the permanent menu line-up.

START YOUR OWN

Do not be afraid to start your own trends. Instead of waiting for another restaurant trend to pop up, why not start your own?

Being known to be a pioneer of something is rare in the industry –just make sure to properly consider the factors that will affect its success.

MARKET RESEARCH

Conduct market research such as surveys, interviews, focus groups and observation.

These methods can help you understand your target market’s needs, wants, preferences and behaviours, as well as their opinions and perceptions of your menu. You can also use market research to test new menu items, measure customer satisfaction, and identify gaps and opportunities in the market.
