Douglas Planer, Past Grand Master

D

November 29, 1956 ~ September 14, 2015

oug Planer was born in Irvington, NJ in 1956. Raised by his parents Mildred “Millie” & George Planer. His close family; grand parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends helped shape who we know today. Upon graduating from high school, Doug took some accounting courses. Worked in Woolworth’s as a stock clerk, then the City of Irvington Parking Authority making friends on the police force while collecting coin from the meters. Doug collected many dear friends along the way, much more valuable to him than those coins. If you did not connect for a while, the time or

distance apart didn’t matter, since in his heart you were always just as close. Close friends, trips to Disney World, storm chasing for a spell (if asked, he could tell you what each cloud formation was or if a storm was brewing) these were some of Doug’s favorite things. Changing careers he worked at U.S and Overseas Insurance Agency in Union from 1988 to the day before his surgery this year (still training someone to step in while he was out). Friends as close as family were made there. The Lord blessed Doug with “finding” his two loves of his life at Grace n’ Peace Fellowship Church in Cranford (now International House of PrayerE.G.). Lynore Giampino, with her big eyes, big smile and even bigger heart, funny wit, and story telling won him over in short order bringing with her a wonderful family to share. Her father brought Doug into the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in 1988, joining Clinton Lodge No. 18 in

Cranford, New Jersey. Lynore’s untimely death in 2004 was devastating. Doug was temporarily adopted by a church family to re-coop for a month. Dottie Treichler walked back into Grace n’ Peace after some events in her life. Doug was hit with God’s “love bug” once again.(who’d have thunk it!-she didn’t) A few years later, they married, bought a house and upon signing the deed, Doug having never lived in a house, asked the attorneys’ “Who do I call when something breaks?” At Union County Baptist Church, Dottie brought Doug into more friends to be made, more teachings of God to learn. The two churches have a Blessing throughout. Many years were devoted to making food for the needy in Elizabeth, Street Light Ministries, also helped with Gateway Pregnancy Center fund raisers. For several years on Friday nights, Doug taught the children about our Lord and His Love for us at Union County Baptist Church. He was dubbed “Mr. Ducky”by a three year old, and has stuck with the children to this day. Doug moved up the ranks in the Grand Lodge, becoming Grand Master 2013-2014, continuing the support of the Arthritis Foundation, Emman-

uel Cancer Foundation, and Rhonda’s Club (Ovarian Cancer) to name a few. His charity for the year was Children’s Specialized Hospital. He loved sports, would bowl and play softball when he could, vacation in Florida (Disney Nut!) and Lancaster, PA (“God’s country”). Doug found great fulfillment in Odd Fellow activities, fund raising, as well as playing Santa at the “Jingle Bell Run”, and acting in skits he helped design “City Slickers Go To the Farm” and “Play Ball!” at two conventions. Doug’s laugh, smile and enthusiasm, determination will sincerely be missed by all.

as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this? 'Look at it.' He said. 'Read what it says.' She read the words, 'United States of America '. 'No, not that; read further.' 'One cent?' 'No, keep reading.' 'In God We Trust?' 'Yes!' 'And?' 'And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! If God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him, who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God;

that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful! When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, 'In God We Trust,' and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message. It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful! And, God is patient. The best mathematical equation I have ever seen: 1 cross + 3 nails = 4 given That's the whole gospel message simply stated. ~ Walter Norris, Chaplain

A MESSAGE FROM THE GRAND CHAPLAIN

PENNIES FROM HEAVEN

Y

ou always hear the usual stories of pennies on the sidewalk being good luck, gifts from angels, etc. This is the first time I've ever heard this twist on the story. Gives you something to think about. Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house. The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely. As the three of them were about to

enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment. Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up? Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She casually mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value. A smile crept across the man's face

There Is Still A Need For Friendship, Love, And Truth

I

t’s hard to believe my term as Grand Master is almost at the half way point. One of my goals is to increase member benefits. The information for the Dental Plan was sent out last month. I hope to find more programs and companies to offer us different types of benefits. In the next couple of months, you will be getting information for a membership directory. Any member will be able to list their trade. This will give us all the opportunity to use a member when we need a service. I would hope everyone takes advantage of this program. We have had a busy fall. Medical studies show staying active extends life expectancy. The same seems to be true with Lodges. Lodges that are active have been gaining members. I have heard Odd Fellowship described as one the of best 200-year-old secrets. There are old photos of hundreds of Odd Fellows marching in parades and other events. So I do

not think it was a secret. As we all know, if you were an Odd Fellow and you suffered some misfortune; The Lodge took care of your family. As that need decreased due to social programs, so did membership. There is still a need for Friendship, Love, and Truth. We have to be seen, let people know what the Odd Fellows stand for, and eagerly encourage people to join. For example, as we are heading into the busy Holiday season we can invite nonmembers to our events and let’s see how many join. Below are some of the events I was able to attend: • August 3: New Brunswick No. 6 Scholarship night. We had a special guest an Odd Fellow vis iting from Poland. • August 8: French Lodge No. 89 Annual Peach and Pancake Breakfast • August 30: VFW Korean War Veteran Dinner in East Brunswick. Followed the School Uni form give away up in Union City organized by the Rebekah’s of Amor y Verdad No. 118.

• September 12: RAINE Beef & Comedy Night • September 13: GL Reorganization meeting • September 18-19: Jurisdiction of Connecticut Grand Lodge Session • September 19: Doug Planers service • September 21: New Brunswick No. 6 Annual Golf Outing • September 25: GL Family Activities NJ Devil Hockey Night • September 30: Ridgely Canton Meeting • October 3: Grand Lodge monthly meeting • October 10: Mid Atlantic State Conclave Meet- ing, Maryland. • October 14-15: NJ Rebekah State Assembly Sesion in Ocean City, New Jersey • October 19: New Brunswick No. 6 Official Visit I wish everyone a happy and “active” holiday season. POWHATTAN ENCAMPMENT MILESTONE

Guided By Faith, Hope, & Charity From 1865 ~ 2015

T

he Grand Encampment of New Jersey chartered Powhattan Encampment No. 30 on October 11, 1865. The first Encampment meeting is recorded as December 25, 1865 in Moorestown, NJ. Grand patriarch W.L. Srope presided the institution. On January 22, 1866, a committee was appointed to create a constitution and By Laws. In June of 1866 all was accomplished, starting Powhattan on one hundred and fifty years of activity. The founders took great pride in their penmanship and bookkeeping, as the minutes of the early meetings are very detailed and complete. For instance, the following item was reported at length: After general discussion about the need of a janitor, a member was finally appointed. He was paid fifty cents per meeting when a fire was to be built and twenty-five cents per meeting in warmer weather. The Encampment was honored in 1914 when patriarch George H. Atkinson was elected to the distinguished office of Grand Patriarch. He was the first member of Powhattan to attain this rank. The membership of Powhattan Encampment in 1922 reflects 60 Patriarchs. During this period several members were on the Grand

Encampment Staff and others were on Grand Encampment Committees. Powhattan Encampment No. 30 has moved three times during the 150 years of existence. The first move was within its original hometown of Moorestown when the Encampment moved to Washington Street in October 1924. In January 1960, the charter was moved to the hall of Bridgeboro Lodge No. 111. When Bridgeboro consolidated with Burlington Lodge No. 22 in the 60’s, Powhattan moved their charter to Burlington, New Jersey. Powhattan was very proud to become the first Encampment to be awarded a 100% certificate from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows World Eye Bank and Visual Research Foundation. Members of Powhattan worked diligently in the 60’s in clearing the forest property designated for the Encampment Park and Youth Center. This property was on the Old Monmouth Road, near the Great Adventure location. The Encampment Park never materialized. The Encampment was proud and happy to have one of our members, William Borden, and his wife, assist in decorating the Odd Fellows Float for the New Year’s Day Rose Bowl Parade on in California ten years ago. During the last 20 years four members of Powhattan have served as Grand Patriarch of New Jersey. They were George Ward III, Walter Norris, Leonard Burger, and Joseph Hubbs. The entire membership of Powhattan is proud to be a part of this 150th celebration —how different then from today! We are grateful to the early Odd Fellows for their foresight and planning. In Burlington, we strive to support and follow our predecessors with faith, hope, and charity as our guide. Powhattan is a small Encampment, but strives to be known in the area. This year (again) we visited the Gift of Life House (www.giftoflifefamilyhouse.org) in Philadelphia with a hot, home cooked meal for the people staying there. It is always a joy to see and serve these folks of all ages. Powhattan is pleased that everyone joined us for a lovely evening as we acknowledged 150 years of Encampment Odd Fellowship. ~Donald H. BROTHER FERNANDO PITA ALVAREZ

~ T

o talk about Brother Pita brother is not easy, and we have to document ourselves with stories or records found in archives. Fernando Pita Alvarez was born in Guines, Havana, Cuba on October 18, 1936. One of 7 children to Ignacio and Mercedes, from an early age has dedicated himself to woodworking, making wagons for hauling sugarcane and manufacturing yachts, marine boats and making furniture. Being himself a master at woodwork he always encourages his assistants by saying “Woodwork is of Masters” and inspires them to always do a better job. He married Sister Maria Emilia Alvarez and from which marriage they procreated a son named Francisco. They have three grandchildren named Fernando, Flavia and Fabian. “The hinges of a door should be as perfect as a key in a lock”. Brother Pita is tireless which is why, rightly so, his assistants are left exhausted with fatigue and hunger during work because their teacher, Brother Pita, does not know about time or

Hey, Y’all! I’m sure by now ya’ all have seen the purty pictures of the hardworking Odd Fellows and Rebekah’s from last August at the SGL session — clap, clap, clap, clap — deep in the heart of Texas. Hold yer horses, ‘cause this page has some never before seen (not so purty) pictures of our very own NJ brothers and sisters out on the town. They was eatin’ with JR (yep, he was there!), drinkin’, and even ridin’ bulls. We even caught PSGM Jimmy with his “sandal boots” and an Eagles Fan goin’ rogue in the Dallas Cowboys shop! See y’all in South Dakota! The Samaritan

‘FORE’ DANE

N

ew Brunswick Lodge No. 6 held their Annual Golf Outing on September 21, 2015 at Peddie Golf Club, Hightstown, NJ. This year’s proceeds went directly to assist the Blei family with exorbitant medical bills incurred by their son, Dane’s illness. At Dane Jr.’s third birthday party, February 28, 2015, something seemed to be very wrong and Dane was not himself. His parents, Dane Sr. and Dana, had noticed a decline in his health since around

Christmas time. They had been to several doctor’s appointments with little answers. Within the days following the party, Dane’s parents decided that they needed to bring the little guy to the hospital in hopes that someone would finally have an answer. Dane was immediately taken to Robert Wood Johnson hospital and was diagnosed with AML leukemia, typically known as Adult Leukemia, paired with an unfavorable chromosome abnormality. We’re sad to report that Dane, Jr. passed away on September 1, 2015. He put up a heroic fight against the cancer, continuing to love Paw Patrol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and his six-year-old sister, Dalilah. Surviving are his parents Dane P., Sr. and Dana Blei of Forked River, NJ; his sister Dalilah ; his maternal grandparents David and Diane Bumbera of Howell, NJ; his fraternal grandparents Susan Cooper of Howell, NJ and Paul Blei of North Carolina; great-grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Fernando Pita from page 10 Del Portal Lodge No. 285, then Michael Popik Jr. Encampment, and Rebekah Amor y Verdad No. 118 of Union City, NJ. During his fraternal life he has held various positions. Secretary of Records and Correspondence, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, Vice Grand, Noble Grande. In Grand Bodies of Grand Lodge of Cuba he was in different committees. District Deputy Grand Master, Chief Grand Patriarch, General Inspector of the Order, Commander in Chief, and Grand Sire of the Grand Lodge of Latin America during the years 1987 and 1988. His distinguished wife, Maria Emilia Alvarez, is also an active member of the Rebekah Amor y Verdad No.118 and was also President of the Rebekah Assembly of Cuba. In his social life Fernando Pita joined the Cuban Red Cross reaching the rank of 2nd

Lieutenant and awarded two Medals of Merit. What else we could say about Brother Pita if already the following words say it al? We must not forget the reminder that his brothers in Cuba wrote. The following was written by Isidoro Sánchez Cordero. Fernando why do you go and leave your country behind? Don’t forget you leave thousands of brothers behind. But, we know you will continue our dream honoring God and Jose Marti. But as long as you continue to be as you there will never be a door that closes in our hearts for you. You lead thru a path that has more light than shadow. That is why you are so named ‘El Valle Mayabequino’ which flourishes your destiny, and since luck is crazy, ‘there’ The Samaritan

where the word ‘future’ is evoked, we hope you will live with a constant smile on your face. My Brother, I hope in the North your heart will sweeten with these verses from Isidoro Sanchez Cordero. May you plant good flowers as you did here so that you never find sorrows under you skin and may you take all the sweetest honey from my hives. Although you may not be here shaking my hand, I am still your Brother and will never forget you. Your absence will leave us with infinite sorrow, Fernando Pita, and the strongest support will be missing from our fraternal house. ~Isidoro Sánchez Cordero Work compiled by: Pastor Hipólito Román Borges, June 2015
