The Grand Master
I
Friendship, Fables, And Fortitude
want to start this editorial, by acknowledging the Editor/Art Director Ms. Beth Obiedzinski-Garvin, and what an inspiration you are to us all. We must give a HUGE thanks to you for showing your tireless efforts, for the creation of this great magazine, The Samaritan. This publication maintains the standard of Odd Fellowship by keeping us informed on all the different activities going on in our lodges around the state. My brothers and sisters, this is something that we need so much and we should all collaborate a little in every edition that gets published. It is not that hard to write a couple of paragraphs, where the only thing that you have to mention is how your lodge, your members and your community are doing. If we all put an ounce of effort into providing information, it would be great for the fraternity, for the magazine, and for you, because believe it or not people do read this magazine. I am asking all of you to take advantage and make an effort to write a little story and send it to Beth to be published. We in the Grand Lodge are thrilled to have The Samaritan spreading our message. We are grateful for the love, admiration and support from all the Odd Fellows, Encampments, Rebekahs, the Canton, all the families, and communities for coming out to our different lodge events, trips, etc. Some of us have had obstacles on the road to be-
coming Grand Masters, some more than others, but I feel that now we are better than ever and our fraternity is only getting better! We are getting a new generation of members more involved and we are restoring our ranks. It seemed as if we were losing members more than gaining because we aren’t getting any younger. Our elderly can’t attend lodge meetings like they used to, other are dying in front of our eyes, and we need to do whatever it takes to strengthen our membership. Tom Calabrese, Grand Patriarch, and I have made a commitment to our selves for the good of the order, to visit some lodges in the different districts in our State and the neighboring states to see what ideas they have. If together, we come up with an idea to get more members to join us, more swill follow. We have to work on as a group in all our endeavors. Aesop’s, ‘The Bundle of Sticks” tells how one stick can be broken very easy but when you create a bundle; the strongest man wouldn’t be able to break it. I think
the true Odd Fellow dream is alive and that anything you can dream of you can do because we are a strong group of individuals that want to work hard, that we are brave and that “WE WON’T LET THE FRATERNITY TORCH SHUT OFF” I have worked very hard as the Grand Master but it has been a joy because of all the support, courtesy, and respect that I have received from my Staff. This is the reason I don’t mind doing it again, and again and again. It’s a pleasure to be part of this order always reminding myself— “What’s so Odd About Helping Others” I wish this year, 2020, will be a better year for all our lodges with an of increase our membership that we need so desperately. In my next issue, I will write the majority in Spanish because the lodges that operate in Spanish have brought it to my attention. I want to please everyone to the best of my ability, I would love to know how do you think we are doing, by that I mean in the Grand Lodge, myself, and my Staff. So drop me an email or give me a call. I would love to know because I value each of your opinions. In Friendship, Love, & Truth, Manny Sosa, Grand Master
Aesop's Fable: The Bundle of Sticks An old man had a set of quarrelsome sons, always fighting with one another. On the point of death, summoned his sons around him to give them some parting advice. He ordered his servants to bring in a bundle of sticks wrapped together. To his eldest son, he commanded, "Break it." The son strained and strained, but with all his efforts was unable to break the bundle. Each son in turn tried, but none of them was successful. "Untie the bundle," said the father, "and each of you take a stick." When they had done so, he called out to them: "Now, break," and each stick was easily broken. "You see my meaning," said their father. "Individually, you can easily be conquered, but together, you are invincible. Union gives strength."
History of the Fable Aesop, if he existed, was a slave in the seventh century Greece. According to Aristotle, he was born in Thrace. His fable of the Bundle of Sticks, also known as the Old Man and His Sons, was well known in Greece. It spread to Central Asia as well, where it was attributed to the Genghis Khan. Ecclesiastes picked up the moral in his proverbs, 4:12 (King James Version) "And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken." The concept was translated visually by the
Etruscans, who passed it along to the Romans, as the fasces—a bundle of rods or spears, sometimes with an axe in their midst. The fasces as a design element would find its way to the original design of the U.S. dime and the podium in the U.S. House of Representatives, not to mention the Italian Fascist Party; the flag of the borough of Brooklyn, New York; and the Knights of Columbus.
Alternate Versions The "old man" in the fable as told by Aesop was also known as a Scythian king and 80 sons. Some versions present the sticks as spears. In the 1600s, the Dutch economist Pieter de la Court popularized the story with a farmer and his seven sons; that version came to supersede Aesop's in Europe. Interpretations De la Court's version of Aesop's story is prefaced with the proverb "Unity makes strength, strife wastes," and this conception came to influence the American and British trade union movements. A common depiction on the banners of trade unions in Britain was a man kneeling to break a bundle sticks, contrasted with a man successfully breaking a single stick.

Spring Into Membership
H
opefully, by now, the cold weather has subsided and snow is over. Springtime brings several Odd Fellow events. During these events we need to get back to bolstering the membership of The Encampment by encouraging more Odd Fellows to join. Working together with the Odd Fellows, the Encampment will be able to help more individuals and charities. So remember to invite a friend who may be interested in becoming a member. I am still trying to plan a visit to my Charity, The Bessie Green Community. I invite all members of the Order to take part. It will be a weekday since that is when they serve lunch to those in need. We will be able to see firsthand how they help those in need Over 40 years ago, Ms. Bessie Green made
a decision that seemed simple at the time but has impacted thousands of lives. Bessie donated her fur coat to the pastors of North Reformed Church in Newark, New Jersey. Her instructions were to sell the coat and use the money to assist someone who perhaps could not afford a coat of their own. This simple act of generosity has blossomed into an organization taking on Bessie's name that assists several thousand people each year with food, clothing and a variety of other resources and services. It is my hope that you will join me in The Encampment and together we will see how we can grow the Order and advance the principles of Faith, Hope, and Charity. Two Odd Perspectives: The Easy & The Hard
D
ear Brothers and Sisters, I would like to share with you Adis’ and my experience at the Rose Parade. We arrived at Ontario, California, Friday December 27, 2019, check ed into the hotel and then got in contact with the people who oversee the float and made arrangement for us to work on the float Saturday morning. We met with some brothers and sisters, among them were General Jack Roberts and Lady Jami Rafter at the hotel breakfast room at 7:30, where we waited for the van shuttle which starts running at 8 am. We were then driven to what they call a Barn which really was a large warehouse. We signed in and immediately got to work. Adis started to trim these small tiny purple flowers but the hard part was there couldn’t be any green. I on the other hand got to cut these long leaves (you know me I go easy). At lunch time, Adis and I walked around the barn looking at the other floats when we came across a Kiwanis group who decided to feed anyone who wanted to eat (you know me free lunch), so Adis and I decided to join them. After lunch Adis, was promoted to work on the float where she started to put oregano under the mushrooms, I got promoted to swiping the floor (that’s what happen when you go the easy route). We worked till about 4 pm then went back to the hotel had dinner and went to bed. We got up on Sunday pretty much the same thing as Saturday except that Adis was promoted to put flowers on the float and I got to hold the box of flowers for another brother who was working in a different section. Monday, started the same except when we got to the barn things were very hectic as everybody was trying to get things done in preparation for the judging that would take place tomorrow. We worked till about 4 when we went back to the hotel to rest because by this time, I was in severe pain. Tuesday morning was the same
routine except we didn’t go to the barn to work, we went for the judging of the float followed by a memorial service, helped pack things up and went to rest at the hotel (took a nap), got up about 6, and went across the street to get some food. While we were waiting, other brothers and sisters showed up and asked us to join them as they were going to celebrate the new year at 7pm (we had to be up by 4 to take the bus to the parade at 5). At 6:50 pm one of the brothers went around the restaurant and informed the people what they were doing and we were welcome to join them, At 6:59:50 we started the countdown to welcome the new year. We wished each other a happy new year and went to our rooms. Parade day finally here, we got up, got on the bus, and headed to the parade, no traffic but there were already streets closed Got to where the bus would park and had to walk 5 miles (it was only 3 blocks but felt like miles to me). We got to our location where there were bleaches for us to sit and within a couple of feet, we had rest room, coffee, hot chocolate and donuts. We enjoyed the parade and headed back to the hotel. Thursday, we got up the usual routine and headed to Redondo Beach, we went sightseeing had lunch on the beach and waited for the sunset. We then headed for the lodge. We had dinner at the lodge with the brothers and sisters then went in for the meeting. I had a great time giving them a hard time. We then left and headed back to the hotel. Which now came to the hardest part — packing up, saying goodbye, and heading home. To my experience I suggest that if you can get to California and work on the float it is an experience you will never forget. Please keep in mind you do as little or as much as you can while you're there because there is no obligation. In Friendship, Love, & Truth, Brigadier General Raul Rodriguez Ambassador of Goodwill

anuary first nineteen seventy-four — That is the date I was first introduced to “The Rose Parade”, which has become an annual tradition for me. In 1983, my parents joined the fraternity and that is when we found out that the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs had a float in the parade. It was then that the Rose Parade became “our parade" and in 1985 my parents went to California to see “The Parade”. They have been bragging ever since about the beauty and magnitude of the parade. Moving forward fifteen years, in the year 2000, to celebrate the new millennium, the organizers of the Rose Parade raffled an all-expense paid trip to the Rose Parade with the opportunity to work on the Float and one of the sister in our lodge won the trip. Uunfortunately, she was not able to attend and the trip was lost. Moving forward another nineteen years to January 1st, 2019, as we (now it's we, since my husband and children have joined my parents and I to watch the parade, and nothing gets done on January first while the parade is going on) were watching the parade , I announced that I wanted to celebrate the 25th anniversary of meeting my husband (Raul and I met January 1st, 1995) at the Rose Parade; and my husband being the way he is, said "Sure”. So, on January 1, 2020, I was going to be in Pasadena, California watching The Rose Parade! From that moment the conversation of attending the Rose Parade came up every other day, and as the day approached closer and closer my anxiety grew higher and high-

er. Finally, on December 27th ,2019 Raul and I boarded the plane on our way to California. We left New Jersey with 30-degree weather and arrive in Ontario, CA with 65 degree weather, how wonderful!!! We picked up the rented car and off we went on our way to our hotel. The Garden Inn is a beautiful Spanish style hotel, comfortable and with very friendly staff. The next day we were up early and had breakfast in the hotel dining room. There we met Brother and Sister Porch and they explained the process of going to work on the float and introduced us to other brothers and sisters that were also going to work on the float. We arrived at the barn where all the floats were, I was so excited!!! I felt like a kid in a toy store! But I soon realized the magnitude of the work being done there. Raul and I were assigned to the prep tables, cutting silver leaves off the stems, “fluffing” carnations, cutting the stems, and putting toothpicks on them preparing them to go into the float. Everyone was busy and titles meant nothing. We were gluing beans to doors, petals to roof, leaves to bumpers and placing flowers in the right places, vacuuming the dust, sweeping the floors so no one fell, and making sure “every surface was covered"— that was everyone’s goal. During the next two days as the float came alive, we were all working together as if we had worked together all our lives. However, everything was not work and no play. Raul and I walked around, saw the other floats being built in the barn, took pictures galore and talked to all that would listen and listen to all

that would talk. There were food vendors and volunteers bringing food to the workers; and we tried Indian food for the first time, which by the way it was delicious. On December 31st, 2019, the floats were done, the scaffolding came down and the judges inspected every float. It was nerve racking, but we had to wait until January 1st, 2020 to find out if we had received any prize. After the judges left, the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs present had a memorial and the float carried the names of our love ones. We had the afternoon off, so we went to see the sites and ended up in the Botanical Garden which was very beautiful. Since we had to get up at 3am to be ready to take the bus to go to the parade at 5 am, we decided we were going to eat across the street at “The Hat”, (a popular restaurant that specializes in pastrami sandwiches) and make it an early night. But in true Odd Fellow fashion there were other Odd Fellows and Rebekah that were there for the same reason we were— or so we thought. As it happens, they have a tradition that includes dinner at “The Hat” and
Adis at The Hi Hat, New Year 2020
at 7pm they have a countdown to the new year (because there it's midnight somewhere), hats, whistles and pastrami sandwiches and we were invited to join them. How Odd!!! I loved it!!! January 1st, 2020, we got up at 3am and by 4am we were in the dining room together with the other brothers and sisters that were also going to the parade with their families. At 5am sharp the school bus that was taking us to Pasadena left the hotel. It made no sense to me that we had to leave so early for the parade since it started at 9am and we were only 20 minutes away. Well, it didn’t take long for us to find out why we left so early. As we entered Pasadena, street closing had already started, traffic was backing up, and people were in the streets as if they were in Times Square on New Year’s Eve. The bus left us three blocks from where were supposed to be and we had to walk uphill!!! We got to the stands and got settled with coffee and doughnuts and watched the sun come up. Finally, it was time for the parade to start. We watched the floats and were even more amazed now that we
knew exactly ALL the work that went into them. We were mesmerized by the bands, the horses, the music, the people, it was a dream come true. Of course, I took a million pictures, well maybe not a million, only 1365. After the parade we went back to the hotel and had dinner with the brothers and sisters that went to the parade. Sovereign Grand Master Wesley Nelson, I.A.R.A. President Elizabeth, General Commander Jack and Lady Jaime were also there. The food was good, but the company was better. During dinner I mentioned that I would like to visit a Lodge in the area, so we were invited to visit Redondo Beach Lodge No. 195 on January 6th, 2020, Three Kings Day. January 2nd-5th we did the tourist thing; L.A., Hollywood, Beverly Hills and visited my mother’s high school friend, we also went to out of her way to show us parks and trails. We really had a good time. But my favorite thing was the weather — 70 degrees in January! On January 6th, we started early and stopped in beach towns along the way. finally, when we got to Redondo Beach, we had lunch on the board

walk and after lunch I went for a walk on the beach and got my feet wet. I was hoping to jump in the water, but the water was sooooo cooooold. Pacific Ocean water is just as cold as the Jersey Shore’s Atlantic Ocean water and not for me (Brrrrrr!) but the sunset over the Ocean was gorgeous. At 5:30pm we headed for the lodge. We had dinner at the lodge with the brothers and sisters (they normally have dinner together before the meeting) and it was an honor to be invited. We then went to the meeting. I felt like if I was in my own lodge, as if I had known them forever. When it was time to go, we did not say goodbye, we said until we meet again for it felt that we entered the lodge as friends and left as family. Now I can truly say my family stretches “From sea to shining sea”! I recommend that you go, work on the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs Rose Parade Float, see the parade with the brothers and sisters, meet my family ...and make them yours. I am an Odd Fellow! I believe in the Fatherhood of God, and the Brotherhood of man. I believe in Friendship, Love and Truth as basic guides to the ultimate destiny of all mankind. I believe my home, my church or temple, my lodge, a nd my community deserve my best work, my modest pride, my earnest faith, and m y deepest loyalty, as I perform my duty , to visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan, and as I work with others to build a better world, because, in spirit and in truth, I am and must always be, grateful to my Creator, faithful to my country and fraternal to my fellow-man; I am an Odd Fellow!
