Continuing An Educational Theme

o my Brothers and Sisters, I would like to thank you for your support and the attention you have given myself and my staff throughout my year as Grand Master. I have had many experiences, from knowledge of the order, to explanation of the order. Working together with my staff and along side of the Grand Matriarch and Rebekah President we were able to visit and spread my theme of education to those lodges that I was able to visit. As Grand Master I had to see things with a different point of view, as not all my comments were welcome and not knowing how to proceed made it very difficult. They tell us that we should be prepared to answer and explain our fraternal order and after years of reading and research I feel lost and unable to reach out to my brothers and sisters on how our order was meant to function. As human beings, we do not want people to intervene with our ways of doing things. But without realizing it and due to circumstances, we change things to be able to function and then it becomes practice. Slowly we

have lost our true way of accomplishing things. So, my final words on education to you my brothers and sister is, let’s utilize our rituals, practice our traditions, and allow our new members to learn the proper way of doing things. Let’s Educate!

~

As we know every story has a twist and here is mine. Being Grand Master has become one of the high lights in the Order as I was able to travel throughout the state and different jurisdictions. I Continued on next page

met so many brothers and sisters! I had the opportunity to share special moments and make new memories. I also learned things for future education. Going to the different lodges throughout the state showed me how different we all work for the Order. But it’s great to see that we do make a difference in people’s lives, as well as our members’ lives — we give hope where there is none. But it’s not all business as I got in trouble many of times for taking sisters’ walkers, the president’s mascot, and even taking center pieces off tables and putting them in other people’s tables. I cried many days with Junior as he couldn’t understand why people would kidnap his father, but knowing he was having a good time, I’m sorry that was unable to be with him. That bird had more

fun then me! It was great representing the order in activities like the Parade with New Brunswick, Arthritis Foundation Activates, Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, RAINE, Mid Atlantic States Conclave, and Tomb of the Unknown soldier. Finally, I would like to thank my family. My activities as Grand Master took a lot of time away from them. It was a great responsibility but not one that anyone of us can’t handle. The memories and special moments are priceless! So brothers and sisters take your fist step become Noble Grand of your Lodge, join the Encampments, the Rebekahs, and then the Grand Lodge and become our next Grand Master. he birth of Odd Fellowship in this country took place on the 26th of April 1819 but it wasn’t until August 3, 1833 that the Grand Lodge of New Jersey was instituted, while Rutherford Lodge No. 240 dates its existence from the 17th of October 1893. In 1891-92 certain residents of this borough, members of the order but away from home lodges, conceived the ide of forming a subordinate lodge here to which they might attach themselves, thus securing the benefits of a lodge home, so dear to every member of the order. The following seventeen members of the lodge were the main ones instrumental in the organization of the order in this town: James Leyland, Charles T. Johnsons, WM. J. Singerland, George K. Thomas, Julius Jaeger, Horatio N. Fish, David R. MacNeil, John J. Dupuy, C. Henry Kotzenberg, William Henkelman, George Ruckstuhl, James H. Smith, Rensselaer Furman, William W. Butler, Joseph W. Beebe, William Gibson, Frank Spitz. Forty-five members were taken in on the night of the institution, making a total of sixty-two members to

start with. While the growth of the order here has been slow, it has been sure, the present membership being about eighty-five. The lodge is sustained by the payment by each member of $8.00 per year dues, the member receiving in case of sickness the sum of $5.00 per week, and in case of death his beneficiary is entitled to $100.00 funeral benefits, and in case of a member’s wife he receives $50.00. The order in this state has increased from 51 members in 1833 to about 30, 000 in 1897, while member ship in the country at the present time is nearly 700,000. The amount expended for relief of distressed brothers in this State for 1897 has been nearly $150,000. ~ James M. Van Valen History of Bergen County, New Jersey, pgs. 443-444

A MESSAGE FROM

THE GRAND MATRIARCH

Canoes, Congrats, And No Confessions

S

pring is in full swing as I’m writing this — sunny, chilly, windy, and and a whole lotta’ pollen. I read that this year this season has been dubbed ‘Pollenocalypse”. Seriously, the pollen had sidelined me for over a week beginning in April. I’ll spare you the sordid details. When I finally got a doctor’s appointment (like trying to get in to Fort Knox that Monday) I was diagnosed with a sinus infection and double ear infection that knocked me out for two more weeks. Full of antibiotics and antihistamines, stuck in the house with Steve, I had a lot to do for the Samaritan, the 186th GL Session, and promoting ODD Fellowship. No need to panic, it always gets done, just well you know…pollen. The big payoff is that when this is printed it will be summer!!! On March 8th we attended the Amity Lodge No. 166 Skate Night Fundraiser with members of Amity and French Lodge No 89. What a fun night skating but by the time we were warmed up it was over. Amity has joined forces with the J. Rodgers School PTO in an effort to help raise funds for a playground. Amity recently collaborated with the PTO on a Breakfast with Easter Bunny to help raise more money. They sure are working their tails off! (You can groan now, but remember I’ve been in the house for three weeks.) The next adventure on my list was The Charity Ball/Luau hosted by The Arthritis Foundation and held in New Brunswick. Of course, there was food, prizes, and games but what makes this an extraordinary afternoon is the amazing Camp CHAT kids. There are several children/teens that are involved with speaking, serving food, and being active participants in the games. They’re always pleasant and fun to be around despite what the arthritis is doing to their young bodies. This year I befriended two lovely young ladies, Aylah and Abigail, who were very helpful to me in trying to locate The Professor when he went missing. The ladies instructed GM Raul that he was either to pay the ransom or he could do an Owl imitation. GM Raul didn’t want to pay up so he did his best owl imitation by flapping his “wings” and repeating, “WHOOOOO took the Professor?” until we were all satisfied. (See the Short List of Suspects on page 29 and feel free to steal the Professor so that GM Raul can perform for you!) On March 19th I had a Joint Official Visit at Arthur Baker Encampment No.1/French Lodge No. 89, both my home lodge and encampment. Brothers and Sisters were treated to a feast of corn beef and cabbage and desserts under the watchful eye of Chef Robért. Then it was business as usual as everyone went upstairs for a meeting where Noble Grand Kevin Zook presided. Special thanks to everyone who cleaned the lodge hall, prepared the extraordinary dinner, and to the lovely Rebekahs who were on hand to help clean up! I attended an Official visit with Grand Master Raul Rodriguez on March 26th at Sanchez Moya No. 282. As always, I was welcomed with open arms! Once the meeting closed we went downstairs for a feast. Unfortunately, The Professor (GM Raul’s mascot) disappeared. We have since watched with joy as The Professor’s travels unfolded on the NJ Facebook page. Unfortunately, the fun and games with his sidekick

~

Minion Kevin resulted in a kidnapping. There are no updates on The Professor’s whereabouts as of this writing. Super Scribe Steve Wooton started a GOFUNDME campaign that has had little success at the time of this writing. (Note: The Professor was found in the men’s bathroom at the Odd Fellow Cemetery during the May Grand Lodge Meeting. Still no confessions but plenty of suspects! To see the Professor's Travel Diary go to www.facebook.com/IOOFNJ/. This year I had the pleasure of celebrating my birthday at the ECF 11th Annual Spring Tea on April 28th with family, friends, and of course Odd fellows. Steve decorated three birthday tables for my No. 1 daughter-in-law Laura (April 3rd), Aunt Sue (April 28th), and myself. This amazing event — the Tea not my birthday — is such a great time they need to move it to a bigger venue. The gift baskets alone are worth the price of admission and of course some of my favorites from ECF like Joann and Rose were there. Most importantly they raised over 20 grand for ECF! One of the honors of being Grand Matriarch is presenting a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during the Annual IOOF Pilgrimage to Arlington Cemetery. This year it was on May 5th, an incredibly wet day but interestingly enough, the rain subsided long enough for all the jurisdictions to lay wreathes. I was honored to walk with Grand Master Raul and Rebekah President Nora. (Photos on page 15.) This solemn event was followed by what I’m dubbing ODD Week from Hell that started at 6 am May 4th at the GL meeting. My Scribe agrees because in over 30 years that he’s been a member, he’s never experienced the fast and furious week we had! The week continued like this: • Mon. May 6th: I attended an Offfical Visit at Mantua-Oak Rebekah Lodge that included attendance by the Fraternal LEA. It was a great turnout! I was also honored to give Lilian New here much deserved PDGM Jewel! • Tues. May 7th: Baker Encampment No. 1 and French Lodge No. 89 (my home lodges) back-to-back meetings an hour and a half away from my real home. • Weds. May 8th: IOOF NJ Investments Dinner and Meeting, numbers and beef, I enjoyed one of them. • Thurs. May 9th: Union Lodge No. 213 Annual Dinner at Careme’s, wonderful food and fellowship! • Fri. May 10th: Joint Official Visit to Burlington Lodge No. 22/Powhatten Encampment, another wonderful turnout at a growing lodge! • Sat. May 11th: Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA) Day/Discovery Tour in the Pine Barrens; what The Samaritan

a beautiful day we had at Atsion Lake!!! The IOOF Grand Encampment of NJ hosted a Discovery Tour at Atsion Lake. Attendees received fashionable IOOF knap sacks that they utilized during the day. The GE also donated 500 of the knap sacks to the PPA program (along with 100 aluminum water bottles from the GL) to give to future trekkers. (This is a great way to get our name out —YES for IOOF EXPOSURE!!!) The intent of the day was to give a first hand glimpse of my Program, The Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA). Odd Fellows, friends, and family were treated to an amazing day of environmental education and whole lot of fun! PPA Director Carleton Montgomery greeted the group and thanked the Odd Fellows for their generous support. Carleton then introduced Director Rob Ferber who runs the day-to-day operations of the Pinelands Adventures (also in charge of the very tasty lunch). Once everyone was settled, the trekkers were left in the able bodied hands of John Volpe, Education Director and his trusty sidekicks, Canoe Captain Bryan (a very patient man) and Aquatics Andy (seen with GM Raul in the water). John did an interesting presentation on everything Pine Barrens before the group split for the three different legs of the tour: Guided trails, canoeing, and aquatics. The weather was gorgeous; the crowd was affable; and our PPA leaders were both extremely informative and entertaining. Boxed lunches were served at the end of the excursion where the group couldn’t decide if they learned more or laughed more— either way this stellar experience was a HUGE success. THANK YOU Carleton, John, Rob, Andy, and Bryan for ALL that you do! THANK YOU to everyone who attended to support my program! Too bad if you missed this, but there will be a next time. Until then enjoy the photos on pages 12 and 13 or on the IOOF NJ FB page: www.facebook.com/IOOFNJ/. Upcoming events I have scheduled are: June 19-21st, NJ Grand Lodge Session; June 30th, Trenton Thunder Game; July 27th, NJ Statewide Picnic, and the August SGL Session in North Carolina. I know I’ll be a has been for these events— I’m sure I forgot a couple—but I’ll be there just the same to support Incoming GM Manny Sosa, RP Nora Lastres, and Incoming GP Tom Calabrese. Congratulations to you all! Don’t worry Tom, I didn’t spend all the GE money, but I believe GE Treasurer/Dad-To-Be has writer’s cramps from all the check writing he’s done. Oh, and I have a secret surprise for you at the GE Session… In early April, following the loss of Norm Johnson and Pastor Roman, we lost a third Past Grand

Patriarch, Ralph Hughes, in as many months. Each of these men were dedicated to The Grand Encampment and were exemplary in the ways they carried themselves long after their bodies would allow. I’m grateful to have known them, learned from them, and laughed with them. True gentlemen. True Brothers. True Patriarchs. It’s been a whirlwind as I look back over my year. I’ve had a lot of love and support from many of my brothers and sisters, family, and friends, which I don’t find Odd at all. Steve is jealous because I received a couple of standing ovations in the North! I believe that the Encampment grew and inch or two by the looks of my successor’s staff because he was able to build his staff in April, NOT in June. I’m thankful to my entire staff for being attentive to their duties as we met officially only a couple times but we were together at so many other meetings and functions that it didn’t necessitate monthly formal meetings. I’m especially thankful to Steve Wooton, my scribe for being so efficient and helping me throughout the year. He truly emulates the lines from our Encampment charge (page 164)“...Your duties well performed will make others ambitious to emulate or excel you. Whatever you do, let it be done cheerfully, promptly, and ef-

in the jurisdictions that he was visiting which awoke his concern for global tree loss. He commissioned this worthy project as “The Living Legacy Program” of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. (Berkey even cites fighting global warming in his brochure!) We don’t have an active Living Legacy program in NJ but I

fectively.” Steve, you are my Super Scribe and I’m keeping you. There are two recommendations I will be making to the Grand Encampment as my final acts as Grand Matriarch. The first is that Grand Matriarch should be made an Official Title. I learned that “Grand Matriarch” does not exist in The Encampment according to Sovereign Grand Lodge. I’m asking SGL Rep. Tom Calabrese and GE Rep. Steve Wooton to take a resolution to the floor at the 2019 SGL Session in North Carolina this year to request that in the 21st Century women can be designated and have the jewel as Grand Matriarch and Past Grand Matriarch, as well all Encampment/LEA titles. As the first Grand Matriarch of New Jersey in 175 years of the Grand Encampment, I am almost offended that this title “doesn’t exist”. I believe in the Age of Inclusivity, this would be an easy fix and signify women’s worth in the Order. Oh, and take note, no one is getting their $5.00 back if they referred to me as Grand Patriarch this year or ever. I exist. My second recommendation is to continue our relationship with The Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA) that I introduced this year as my program. I strongly believe in all the work that this organization does to protect and preserve NJ’s Pinelands. Past Sovereign Grand Master Wilson D. Berkey, who in 1989 noticed many dead trees

believe the PPA is the way to fulfill our charge above and beyond that of just planting trees. My hope is that the PPA Discovery Tour on May 11th convinced everyone what a vital part the PPA plays in our lives and for those to come. In Faith, Hope, & Charity, Beth Obiedzinski-Garvin Grand Matriarch

The PPA is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving the Pinelands of NJ. We use advocacy and education to involve the public and persuade the government to protect the natural and cultural resources of this extraordinary region. We seek to improve these and other environmental laws to better protect the Pinelands’ natural and historic resources. www.pinelandsalliance.org The Samaritan

Although a Nor Easter hit the coast on Friday, the weekend was filled with warmth, friendship, and laughter that took the edge off some of the hard work the sisters and brothers had to accomplish. President Wanda "Peanut" Burns presided over the session until she performed her last duty of passing the gavel to Sister Nora Lastres. Congratulations on a job well done, Peanut and Best of Luck

U.S.A Flag Tribute I am the United States flag, symbol of many things. I am whatever you make me, nothing more, nothing less. I am the promise of a nation a mother’s dream, a child’s desire. I am your belief in your future, your hope for your family. I am the flag of many races— white, black, yellow, and red. I am the sweat of a hard day’s labor, the thought of a brain, the pain of decision. I am the Constitution and the statues, the courts and the Legislatures, the voting booth and the soldier, the street sweeper and the executive. I am the compelling reason, a new idea, and definition of purpose. I am earth and sky and sea; I am wind and rain and sun; I am the right to work and own; t he right to play and the right to pray. A Thank You from Pastor's niece, Alicia Geraci On February 2, we said our final goodbyes to my uncle, Pastor Hipolito. I want to thank everyone who offered their condolences. If you know my family, you know we are a very tight knit group. 20 for lunch simply means someone couldn’t make it that day. This has been an unexpected blow that has shaken us to our very soul. There were over 100 people at his wake and I know there would have been over 100 more if circumstances permitted it. That’s how much he was loved and respected. My uncle loved music, all types, and had a vast record collection. He loved photography, both taking pictures and collecting them. He was an inquisitive man who loved to learn and find out how things worked. He taught himself how to be an electrician and how to repair cameras. He loved recording history. He'd write about his childhood and the characters from his beloved Bayamo where he was born and raised. He loved the USA and was so happy when he reached his dream of coming here with his family. He loved his lodges the Masons and the Odd Fellows. But most of all he loved us— his family. He adored his brother and best friend Joaquin and his sister Nuria. He loved his mother-in-law Matilde who was like a second mother to him. He always had a smile and a kind word for us his nieces and nephews, our mates, and our kids. His children William and Kenya and her husband Rocco (who he loved as a son) were his pride and joy as where his grandchildren Leo, Alex and Sharon. But Noris, his bride of 50 years, was the light in his life. All of our hearts broke as we watched her say goodbye to the man she’s loved since she was a teenager. RIP my darling Godfather, you will never be forgotten. The Samaritan

Ralph D. Hughes March 13, 1934 ~ April 4, 2019

A great lover of life, he went to his reward surrounded by loving family and friends. Born March 13, 1934, died April 4, 2019, age 85 years. Predeceased by his parents, Bessie V. & Ralph D. Hughes, and hissiblings; Beatrice H. Nicholson, Earl F. Hughes, J. Wilson Hughes, Doris E. Sahms and Grace H. Redmond, and his wife, Frances L. Hughes. He graduated Glassboro High School, 1952. He is survived by his first wife, Barbara McKeever, daughters Lauren Michael (Kerry), Jennifer McKeever (Ed), ten grandchildren, companionDolores Carey and many loving nieces and nephews. His career included farming, commission merchant, auctioneer and realtor. Ralph had many hobbies, including pilot, rodeo cowboy, singer, musician, horseman, avid gardener & lifelong Eagles fan. His service to others included Odd Fellows, Pitman Masonic Lodge & life membership in the Aura Fire Company. He hosted numerous charity auctions. A devout Christian, he was viewed at the Aura United Methodist Church, where friends called from 6-8PM, Monday, April 8th. His funeral was Tuesday, April 9th, where friends called from 10-11AM, with funeral services at 11AM, and interment immediately following in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Aura United Methodist Church, 901 Aura Road, Monroeville, NJ 08343.

The Auctioneer’s Prayer He stares at his tractor with watery eyes, Remembering the nights under God’s bright skies. Her fingers slide over the old kitchen stove, A catch in her throat that no one else knows. If just these two items could bring what they made, All the farm’s debts could quickly be paid. The auctioneer sees all, and shares in their pain; He’s seen it happen time and again. Some might assume that he doesn’t care, But before their auction comes the Auctioneer’s Prayer. “Lord, please guide me through this auction day, In all that I do and all that I say, Help me cry stronger than ever I’ve done,

For this is their auction, this is the one.” Yes, another farm auction, held here today, People gather in their usual way. To poke through the boxes and trample the lawn, They’ll quickly forget when all’s sold and gone. We get to know them, we share in their plight, The tables hold history, laid out in plain sight. We know the story of this man and his wife, What we auction here are the remnants of life. If it be your will, Lord, through Christ your Son, Help me cry stronger than ever I’ve done, For this is their auction, this is the one. ~Dennis Wendt, Parker, Kansas, 1986 The Samaritan

PILGRIMMAGE TO THE TOMB OF

THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER

Odd Fellows Annual Trek To Arlington The IOOF pilgrimage is a solemn ceremony that we have named “The Pilgrimage to the Tomb”. It is the result of a privilege that was afforded to the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs by our thirty-second President of the United States and an Odd Fellow, Franklin D. Roosevelt who was in the White House from 19331945. June 17, 1934 was the first date for the Odd Fellow Pi l g r i m a g e . The purpose of this Pilgrimage was not only to honor the Unknown Soldier and the Nation’s War Dead, but also the members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows who had made the supreme sacrifice in World War I. Lodges from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia participated in this first Pilgrimage. One year later, New Jersey and Delaware joined; almost 1,000 members of the Order were present. Credit for the Pilgrimage idea goes to Charles Lampe, who was Grand Master of the District of Columbia. On July 7, 1940, the Grand Sire, on behalf of IOOF presented to the Unknown Soldier the Grand Deco-

ration of Chivalry, the highest decoration bestowed upon an Odd Fellow. This Jewel, received by the Department of Army, is prominently displayed in the Hall of Trophies. On May 3, 1959 the Sovereign Grand Master presented two more Grand Decoration of Chivalry Jewels to the Army – one for the Unknown Soldier of World War II and the other for the Unknown Soldier of the Korean Conflict. Both Jewels were placed in the Hall of Trophies. Growth of this tradition was tremendous. Finally, a resolution was adopted at the 1954 Sovereign Grand Lodge Session that sponsorship be assumed by The Sovereign Grand Lodge and that each Sovereign Grand Master appoint the General Chairman. Previously, it had been the custom for the Department Commander of the Patriarchs Militant of the District of Columbia to serve as chairman of the Pilgrimage. This ceremony of Remembrance for those who have given their lives to preserve the “American way of life” enshrines the principles of Odd Fellowship: Friendship, Love and Truth. It is indeed an honor to be a part of this pilgrimage. ~ Courtesy Frede Ende Lodge No. 87 • Greenville, TX

AtlantiCare’s Rose Marie McCarthy provided a wonderful presentation to SPFD members, City Councilmen, and Jim Smith (IOOF Union Lodge No. 213 and Fire Dept.) The cooperative effort between IOOF NJ and AtlantiCare has had an immense effect on various communities in Southern New Jersey. Through the dedication and donations provided by IOOF NJ and AtlantiCare, AED’s are being installed at businesses, schools, and any public areas that may need to have this live saving medical device. This is the 270th AED that has been placed.

A MESSAGE FROM

THE INCOMING GRAND MASTER

Brothers And Sisters, You Are All The Proof I Needed

I

was born in the city of Sagua La Grande, Province of Las Villas, Cuba, on March 15th, 1960. My parents Manuel V. Sosa and Mirta I. Larrosa, I married Maritza Sosa, and we have three sons Michael, Jesus, and Javier. We have five grandchildren (Isabella, Anthony, Jesus (JJ) Ariana, Gia and one on the way We left Cuba on February 14, 1972 to come to the United States of America via Spain, where we lived for over two years, where I was attending school and had a little part time in a fish market on Saturday, then I worked as a waiter in a small plaza, with the money that I was making we used to go to the movies and buy some extra snacks for my two brothers and sister. (She passed away after a long battle with breast cancer she was only forty-six years old that happen the 26th of October 2009. RIP). On May 2, 1974 we finally arrived at Kennedy Airport, New York, where a lot of family were waiting for us after fifteen or twenty years without seen each other, I starter school right away and at night time I study to become a color photo Lab Technician and work at Action Photo Lab in Union City. I also work construction during the day and went to school at night and got my Diploma as a certified Diesel mechanic. I started to work in a bus company as a mechanic and part time bus driver, and who was going to know that the lady who was the owner was going to be my wife of now thirty-five years together, we had a very successful company and name it after our older son Michael Tours. But it came a time that the price of Diesel fuel, and the insurance policies became ridiculoulsy expensive so we had no choice but to close the doors. I started to work as a general mechanic for the City of Union City, and was assign to the Police and Public Safety garage, and my wife became a teacher of Special Needs Students. Now for a couple of years, Jose Salamanca, my father in law and thenNoble Grande of Sanchez Moya No. 282, had been trying to convince me to join the Odd Fellows because it is a good fraternity but the truth is, I was kind of afraid and couldn’t make up my mind. Finally I decided to join after my mother in law passed away December 29, 2011. I told my wife I think I’m going to join the lodge that your Dad goes to, that way he doesn’t feel that lonely after losing his wife of 60 years. My wife agreed with me and I broke the news to him by telling him get me the application to join your lodge. I will never forget the date that I got initiated— September 11, 2012. I became an Odd Fellow and a proudmember of Sanchez Moya No. 282 along with two women and to men. Bélgica Cartagena was Noble Grand and my father in law was the treasurer. The Noble Grande asked me, “Are you willing to take an elected position in the lodge? We are in need of a Finanacial Secretary. You will be seated next to Salamanca your father in law and he will help you.” I said sure and two days later we were back at Alvarez

Del Portal where they gave us the degree. The following session we had the nominations, follow by the elections and then the installations on the 23rd of October, and not a minute to soon. On November 1st my father passed away and at the funeral I couldn’t believe my own eyes. My mother and my brothers asked me who are all those people sitting in the back we don’t know them. My answer to them was they are my brothers and sisters from the fraternity I became a member of. That was the only proof I needed to to convince myself that I had joined the right fraternity. On February 24, 2013 I joined the Michael Popik Jr. Encampment No. 117. On October 2013 became Vice Grand of Sanchez Moya No. 282 and then Noble Grand from 2014 to 2015. I was Senior Warden, of Michael Popik Encampment No. 117 in 2014, in 2015 I was High Priest, and in 2016 I was the Chief Patriarch. I received my Grand Lodge degree at the Grand Lodge Session 2016 in Atlantic City. I was appointed as a Grand Conductor of the Grand Lodge of New Jersey, and as Grand High Priest of the Grand Encampment of New Jersey on January 2017. I joined the Rebekah Amor y Verdad No. 118, and then installed as the Grand Patriarch of the State of New Jersey. Now, through a turn of events I find my self being jumping from Grand Warden to Grand Master of the great jusrisidiction of New Jersey! I would like to say thank you very much to The Samaritan

Welcome to the

O

n the Sovereign Grand Lodge web-site it states “The Odd Fellows Encampment is a higher branch in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Membership is open to all Third Degree members in good standing. The branch aims to further the work of Odd Fellowship and impart the principles of Faith, Hope, and Charity.” With membership dwindling and time to devote to the Order being limited, many members including myself have questioned the need for the three branches. After educating myself about the Encampment in NJ, I no longer question its validity and hope what I share with others will answer their questions as well. The work that they do advances Odd Fellowship to another level. During my term as Grand Patriarch, I will remain focused on bolstering the membership of The Encampment by encouraging more Odd Fellows to join. Hopefully, I will be able to help people realize that together the Odd Fellows and the Encampment will be able to help more individuals and charities. My Charity is The Bessie Green Community. In 1979, Ms. Bessie Green made a decision that seemed simple at the time but has impacted thousands of lives in the 30 years since. Bessie donated her fur coat to the pastors of North Reformed Church in Newark, New Jersey. Her instructions were to sell the coat and use the money to assist someone who perhaps could not afford a coat of their own, much less a fur coat. This simple act of generosity has blossomed into an organization taking on Bessie's name that assists several thousand people each year with food, clothing and a variety of other resources and services. It is my hope that you will join me in The Encampment and together we will see how we can grow the Order and advance the principles of Faith, Hope, and Charity.

Bessie Green Community

Known among our neighbors as “The Red Door,” Bessie Green Community has been serving the underprivileged of Newark, New Jersey, since 1978. Our soup kitchen in Newark, NJ, is just one of our many popular programs. Providing hot meals, clothing, and bags of food, Bessie Green Community seeks to fulfill its mission statement of: Feeding, clothing, and supporting our neighbors with compassion and dignity. Bessie Green Community, Inc.,

The Samaritan

strives to improve the lives of our neighbors by giving them a helping hand. To accomplish this, we rely on donations from individuals, companies, and churches. We receive no funds from the government. Our programs include a soup kitchen, food pantry, and clothing barn. Everyone is welcome, at no cost, and no questions asked. From volunteering to financial donations, there are many ways in which you can help. Please visit our website: www.bessiegreen.org
