The Grand Master

It’s Not Where You Start, It’s What You Reach For

I

remember my Grand Lodge beginnings, starting at the bottom as Grand Herald — then climbing positions year after year. It was the same with the Encampment starting at the bottom until I reached Grand Patriarch while pursuing the postiion of Grand Master of New Jersey. As brothers Hugo Cabrera and Guido Miranda say, “It’s not where you start , it’s what you reach for!” And now it’s been over two months since I became Grand Master. During these past two months, I’ve attended a few lodges and a couple events. My first Official Visit was to Alvarez del Portal Lodge No. 285 (photos on page 3 and 5) followed by my visit to Michael Popik Junior No. 117 Encampment. I am still Secretary for Michael Popik Junior No. 117 because I can’t leave the position vacant. My visit to Sanchez Moya Lodge No. 282 (photos page 3 and 5) was also very special because I’m an associate member and we must cooperate with our brothers and sisters because it is important for their growth. I went to the New Brunswick Lodge No. 6 Annual Craft and Flea Market (photos on page 20) where I had the opportunity to shop and fellowship with brothers and sisters Next, I attended the luncheon for The United Nations Education Pilgrimage (photos on page 12) at the Golden Diner in Burlington, NJ. The young people spoke about the trip and what it meant to them, as they are new to the Order. I could not miss the visit to Camp Chat (photos on page 13) for children with Juvenile Arthritis while in the good company of Grand Lodge Officers, Odd Fellows, and Rebekahs from all over New Jersey. When I got home, it was time to prepare for the Grand Lodge Statewide Picnic (photos on pages 14-17 ) where any member of the order, family and friends can attend a day of fellowship.

~

~

I am grateful to all you brothers and sisters who have helped develop our good work so we can better serve others.

I attended Amor y Verdad Lodge No. 118 to help distribute over 200 school uniforms to the low income students of Hudson County, NJ. (photos on page 10 and 11) This selfless work was started by Chambelli Aruajo under the guidance of her mother Marcia Lopez Aruajo, President of the Rebekah Assembly, and the continued dedication and hard work of the members of Amor y Verdad Lodge No. 118.

My visit to to Alvarez del Portal Lodge No. 285 was very special since it was the 42nd anniversary. The presence of several members of the Grand Lodge, and many brothers and sisters of other lodges made it a wonderful event. The Testimonial Dinner Organizing Committee has been showing their bortherly love for me as they GM continued on page 5

OOPS!

Sometimes we get it wrong...

In the Session Issue of The Samaritan and The Grand Master’s program brochure, the Grand Herald’s name was listed as Bob Cassels instead of Bob Cassidy (French Lodge No. 89). We’re sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

This event, started by Chambeli Araujo, provides the children of Hudson County with over 200 uniforms & assorted school supplies. I received so many amazing pictures from Pastor & Ramon that I decided to share only the photos of the of the children and their families during this action packed day. n July 17, The Odd Fellows United Nations Educational Pilgrimage (UNEP) for Youth made a brief stop in New Jersey to enjoy a luncheon at the Golden Diner in Burlington, NJ. For many years, Burlington Lodge No. 22 has sponsored the UNEP students by housing them and feeding them with the help of The Grand Lodge of NJ. This year the students only had time to stop for lunch before heading NY. Ben Burger continues to spearhead this tradition passed down to him by his father, Len Burger. Hope your trip was a blast, kids! For info on the UNEP visit www.unpilgrimage.org.

It was a beautiful day for a bargain at the NB6 Annual Craft and Flea Market on July 10. There was a variety goods to buy from cartoonist Dave Fowler to handmade items to Xbox games and everything in between. We made a few new friends —The Idells and Samantha Johnson — from the POP-IN Cafe and maybe even a few new members!
