A message from

G
Odd Fellows + FLT = Teachers
reetings to all my Brothers and Sisters of the IOOF, First, I hope your holidays were nice and would like to wish you all a Happy New Year from my home to yours. I would like this opportunity to share a few thoughts. Educating the orphan is one of our man-
must share it in life so that it continues to grow and evolve. Where would we be today if our forefathers would not have taken the time to teach, to write, to correct those who came before us and that today are our teachers? Oh, how I wish I would have taken advantage of my mother’s knowledge and learned to make her delicious pasteles. We must take the time to teach something to someone and in turn learn from them for they also have something to teach … regardless of their age. If there is one thing I've learned about Odd Fellows as I travel to different jurisdictions, is that we learn different ways of doing the same things, which tells me that even though we are one fraternal order we see and pursue with different points of view. I have noticed that one Noble Grand is interested in how many members are at a meeting while another is more interested in what was accomplished in the last meeting. I believe if you travel, listen, and teach what you learn, we all benefit as the order grows. A sample of our growth is we allow women in the Odd Fellows yet in Cuba they still don’t. I have learned a lot about the old ways of doing things as Cuba still does things that way. I would like to thank the Grand Lodge of New Jersey for helping my wife, Adis,
dates. Sometimes we are not orphans of parents, but we are orphans of mentors. Teaching takes many forms, from supporting a child as he/she begins to talk to telling a stranger what Odd Fellowship is all about. We must take our mistakes and turn them into learning opportunities. When someone corrects us, be thankful that person cares enough to take the time to let us know where we have gone astray. Knowledge is one of the things that we take with us in our final journey. We
Photo by Beth O-Garvin and I to get to Cuba where we were welcomed with open arms, I was able to participate in their Session. We were able to visit an orphanage that cares for children ages three to seven that is in partnerships with the Grand Lodge of Cuba. I attended the Grand Encampment, The Grand Lodge, and The Grand Lodge of America Latina although my wife was not able to attend because they still do not accept female as Odd Fellows in their meetings. On the other hand, I was not able to attend the Rebekah Assembly session as their session was at the same time as Grand Lodge but we still were represented by Sister Adis Roman who was also welcomed with open arms. As the year begins, may you all have a blessed New Year with health, happiness, and education throughout the 2019. Let's remember to take a moment and teach what we learn as we learn. May God bless each and every one. In Friendship, Love, & Truth, Raul Rodriguez, Photos courtesy of the GL of Cuba Grand Master The Samaritan

Let's Go Back To The Future
trust that your holidays were brimming with love and laughter! I don’t know exactly how mine went because I’m writing this about a month prior to the start of New Year 2019. So let me do a little Back to the Future type message this issue… In our house, we acknowledge all the holidays in December —from Chanukah to Festivus up to Christmas and including Kwanzaa— maybe not in the traditional sense but we celebrate the spirit of them ALL. It began partially because I’m adopted so I get to claim all races, faiths, non-faiths, etc. Enter into my world my sons Tommy and Robert and that ...Adis is thought process turned into a few my witness — educational moments about difI did NOT ferences and the acceptance of othkidnap ers. It's just like being a member The Professor. of the Encampment, we accept each other’s differences in order to get a lot of good accomplished. My son really love Seinfeld, too. :) However, the one event that prepares me for
~
the hectic month (and the reason I took notice of the Order) is the French Lodge No. 89/ Emmanuel Cancer Foundation Christmas Party! Steve Wooton invited me to one about 12 years ago and well you know the rest of THAT story. Every year on the first Saturday of December, French Lodge members, volunteers organized by ECF staff, , and a few paid pros
put on a party for ECF kids and their families like no other party I‘ve been privy too, EVER. There’s such an abundant feeling of love, hope, and stoicism that I can’t accurately express in words what this day means to me. By the end of the day, I drive home to Tuckerton feeling such admiration for the families and others who make this event possible. I get a sense of gratitude for being able to be a small part of this big day. And would you like to know the absolute greatest joy of this day? I’ve gotten to see many kids grow up to be young adults. As a matter of fact, the cover photo of this issue is our new friend Ezra (and Dad). Please check out both the IOOF NJ an ECF Facebook pages to see all the photos of this amazing day. I’m not big fan of Facebag (Face-
book for those of you who don’t know me), unless Steve is driving us somewhere and I need to manage my passenger side fears with cell phone therapy. I do appreciate and utilize the advantages of social media for the IOOF NJ page that I manage, so please go LIKE the page right now. :) And on occasion when social media powers are used for good, well, its not just good, it’s awesome! Like the next story I'm going to share. In late November, Steve saw a post from his friend Andrea about how she was taking down her Go Fund Me page she had created to generate funds for socks for the homeless. Like everyone else, Andrea felt uncomfortable once the news story broke about the threesome in Philly/Jersey who abused the Go Fund Me system. Steve instant messaged her requesting they talk on the phone. He then asked me if the Encampment would be interested in donating and I replied with, “Sure, how about $750.00? Oh, and call Raul because, well because that’s what Raul and I do.” Steve then called Raul who said yes without hesitation. That call was followed by a call to Julia (NG, French No. 89) and asked her if she wanted to donate from her discretionary fund. She said, "Yes" without hesitation and the next thing you know Steve and I are headed to Kohl’s with $2000.00 for socks. We were greeted by Rich, the manager at Kohl’s in Manahawkin who gave us 30% off ALL socks and had Store manger Ann check us out so we didn’t have to stand in line or create a line! We broke the register because we exceeded 199 items — a first for all of us— with a receipt that was over 10' long. Do you know how The Samaritan

many socks $2000.00 can buy? It’s enough to pack a Chrysler 300’s trunk that is about 16.5 cubic feet! The Testimonial Dinner for Grand Master Raul Rodriguez was held at La Reggia, Secaucus, NJ on Nov. 11 (Photos on page 2). It was a beautiful heartfelt afternoon that exuded the very essence of Friendship, Love, and Truth along with Faith Hope, and Charity. I was very proud to sit at the head table next to his wife Adis because it’s not often we get to sit back and enjoy an event together. Also, Adis is my witness — I did NOT kidnap The Profsssor. I attended the Union Lodge No. 213 Annual Beef & Beer Fundraiser that benefits their Scholarship Program on Nov. 10th. The All You Can Eat meal is entirely home cooked, spearheaded by members Mr. & Mrs. Jim Garth, hardworking lodge members, and entertainmnet by a rockin’ DJ to work off the All-You-Can-Eat meal!
On November 9, our son Joe (number three in our line up) said “I do” to Laura in front of family friends at the Cecil Creek Farm in Mickleton, NJ. Joe is a 4th generation Odd Fellow and Secretary of French Lodge No. 89. His ancestry is as follows: Great Grandfather Bob Wooton, Grandfather Bob Wooton (PGM, PGP) and Dad Steve Wooton (PGM, PGP). We will patiently wait for the fifth generation Odd Fellow. It was all work and no play on November 4 (well maybe some play) when I attended the monthly GL meeting followed by a special meeting of Secretaries, Scribes, Treasurers, Financial Secretaries, and other interested members to learn proper procedure for reports, who to contact, and general information about their duties. If you’re curious about the Grand Lodge or Grand Encampment, I strongly suggest you start attending the monthly meetings because there’s a lot to be learned that doesn’t happen at a general lodge meeting. I was invited to the 130th NJ Rebekah State Assembly Annual Session on the weekend of October 26th in Ocean City, NJ. Although a Nor’ Easter hit the coast on Friday, the weekend was filled with warmth, friendship, and laughter that took the edge off some of the hard work the sisters and brothers had to accomplish. President Wanda "Peanut" Burns presided over the session until she performed her last duty of passing the gavel to incoming president, Sister Nora Lastres. I know it's bittersweet Peanut, but congratulations on a job well done. Best of Luck to President Nora and the incoming staff! Thanks to everyone (including the staff at the PortO-Call) who made this weekend such a success! Thanks to Ben "Bingo Balls" Burger for taking the lead on Fun Night and keeping everyone in line. And remember Al, Brenda, Debbe, Peanut, and Steve — what happens at the Bingo table, stays at the Bingo table. For the second time (and now officially an annual trip), we went to Crab Feast! hosted by North Point Lodge No. 4
archs Meeting. These occasional meetings are a casual informative session with Past Grand Masters, Grand Patriarchs, and present staff members for the current Grand Master, his staff, and… wait for it…current Grand Matriarch and her staff to have a Q & A. Again, if you’re curious and want to go the extra mile in this order, first, you need to show up. Enough said. One of the highlights of September was on the 30th when we made some history in New Castle, Delaware at the 1st Annual LGBQT Pride Day. I was invited by brother Chris Alexander (PP) to take part and speak with people about the Order. The weather was gorgeous which set the tone for an afternoon of stellar speakers, amazing entertainment, food trucks, and diverse vendors which helped bring people of all races, genders, and identities together for hours on an end. I’m not sure if this is the first time an IOOF jurisdiction has been involved in an LGBQT event but there were over 1000 attendees and Chris, Steve, Judy and I talked Odd Fellowship to at least 994 of them! After all the negative press that was flying around on the Internet a couple of years ago regarding the IOOF and our lack of acceptance, I was very surprised that the photo album I posted didn’t go IOOF viral throughout the Odd Fellow social media. Maybe next time… As I was finishing this message, I received some sad news about the passing of Fran Hughes, the wife of Ralph Hughes (French Lodge No. 89, PGM PGP). Fran, Joan Wooton, and I spent an afternoon shopping in Atlantic City at the first NJ GL Session I ever attended. We had a lot of fun that day and those two ladies knew how to shop! Fran continued to be one of those people it was always fun to see at events. I’ll always miss her smiling face, but I know she’s shopping somewhere. And so dear reader, that brings us back to the future, my present reality, the beginning of December. Bing Crosby and David Bowie are singing Peace on Earth/LittleDrummer Boy, there’s a lot to be accomplished, and baby, it's cold outside. By the time you read this it will be still be cold outside but I hope your holidays are now a warm, wonderful memory. Here's to a healthy New Year! In Faith, Hope, & Charity, Beth Obiedzinski-Garvin Grand Matriarch

Thanks to North Point for making us feel so welcome. Special thanks to brothers Dennis Brown, Joe Labuda, and Len Taylor for extending a big helping of FLT, reserving a table, and all the laughs. See ya soon! On October 6, I attended the GL Meeting followed by the Past Grand Master, Past Grand PatriThe Samaritan

The Past Grand Patriarch
I
Grateful, Rested, And Ready To Go
will start by saying I hope your Christmas was exceptional with your families and friends and that everyone is in good health — that is our number one priority — Health because with that you will be a happy person. After that, of course, to love and to be loved is a very good thing. Money it helps, it helps a lot, but you definitely can’t buy health or happiness. Let’s pray that this New Year will bring us health, happiness, and love. Another thing I am seeing more everyday is that more are sharing about the separation within families. Our families are our roots and as they keep spreading it saddens me to see the end results of what is happening in so many places and in so many homes, such as domestic violence and orphaned children. Mostly, we need to pray to keep our families, our kids, our friends, and our neighbors together. Let’s not fight over material things. Material things can always be replaced sooner or later but your loved ones are not replaceable at any cost. I hope you are all doing well and have a begun a wonderful and healthy 2019! I would like to say thank you to our Grand Matriarch Beth Garvin and to Grand Master Raúl Rodríguez, for their support and collaboration with me during my term as Grand Patriarch last year. As I told them several times, you can count on me for anything you may need. After my very busy year, I took a little time off but now I’m ready to extend my hand again no questions asked. (Editor’s note: We know Manny and your list is in the mail.) I would like to congratulate Beth Garvin for her great job and and her enthusiasm. She keeps up with all of us, reminding us to always do some writing, stories, pictures, experiences etc. to maintain The Samaritan Magazine. It keeps our brotherhood up to date with all the different happenings throughout our lodges and reflects upon what we

Sister, I would like to personally say you have my support and help whenever and wherever you need me. Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, Beth. And to Raúl, our Grand Master, who has been very busy traveling in (and out) of New Jersey, I know how that feels! I personally did a lot of visitations to different lodges, Encampments. LEA’s Rebekah’s and you did accompany me many times. On many occasions, we racked up a lot of mileage, but at the end of every visit, we received heartfelt appreciation for taking the time to visit so many lodges. Remember, your presence at these lodges is important so forget all those miles and traffic jams. So thank you my brother and keep up the good work! Know that you can always count on me.

I had such a great experience as Grand Patriarch. I met so many good people and that is something I am always reminded of as an Odd Fellow. It was a job I did for the fraternity, but I benefitted from it most of all. I don’t know what motivates you in this Order but it made me extremely proud to be an Odd Fellow. I would like to share some great experiences that I had in the last few months that illustrate exacty what I mean.
I was invited to the Installations of Lodge Patria y Libertad No. 280 in Perth Amboy, NJ that was done at brother Héctor Galanos’s residence. There were a great number of brothers and sisters at this gathering where Brother Galano was the “Chef-in-Charge”. My congratulations to him for all the cooking! He also gave me the honor of presenting to his wife Edelisa Galano with an Award of Recognition for her over 60 years as an Odd Fellow. She was the first woman to become a Noble Grand in an Odd Fellow Lodge, and that made me feel very touched and proud. At the same get together we celebrated three birthdays: Fernando Pita, PGS of Latin America and District Deputy for the NJ Grand Encampment of District No. 1; Héctor Galano, PGM and PGP of NJ; and last but not least Ramón Cartagena, GG and PDDGM District No. 3. Next I’d like to share a photos of three new members of our lodge, Sánchez Moya No. 282 that were taken at the Testimonial Dinner honoring Raúl Rodríguez our Grand Master. My wife Maritza Sosa (in blue dress, not Einstein anymore!), her coworkers Remigio Auz and his wife Norma Guevara, and myself are seen in the photo on this page in the upper right. They all joined at the Degree Rally on April 28, 2018 hosted by NJ GL at Burlington Lodge No. 22. And lastly, I’d like to share about the traditional Thanksgiving Dinner celebrated by Sánchez Moya No. 282 on November 13th. We've been carrying on this tradition since we opened our Lodge back in 1991. Year after year, we do this public charity event for
the members of all the lodges in our state and New York. We invite all the neighbors from around the Lodge so that we can explain and show them a little of what our fraternity does for EVERYBODY. We try to gain members and it works because we have been successful many years. Another reason is because there are many less fortunate people and families that can’t afford to have a nice warm plate of food during the holidays. We are very proud and happy to be able to do this type of event whenever possible. We also held one at Christmas. For that one, we do have a dinner and also raffle six $25.00 Shop-Rite gift cards free of charge. I encourage everyone to get out and tell people what we do in all our lodges. There are people who really don’t know what we do. If you’re not sure where or who to direct someone, please reach out to the Grand Lodge of NJ and they will refer you to a lodge as close to your District as possible. You may have neighbors on your block and they don’t even know about us. Please spread the word as we need members. I can assure you that you definitely won’t regret it! Thank you all very much and may God Speed. Fraternally Yours, Manny Sosa Past Grand Patriarch, 2017 The Samaritan

better because I can regularly visit him with him. As I sat there visiting with our brother, I realized that we can’t put a price on spending time with our brothers and sisters that are in need. I think that that is the best gift we can give not only at the holidays but all year long. So this year try to spend time with a brother or sister in need, or for that matter, anybody that could use a little help. Have a very Safe, Healthy, and Happy 2019! ~Brother Jeff Pennell aka Beep Beep the Clown
s the New Year begins, I hope this letter finds you in good health. I stopped to reflect on how wonderful it is that I am an Odd Fellow. I have many brothers and sisters that have impacted and changed my life, so recently, I took part of the Odd Fellow Oath, To Visit the Sick, and starting doing just that on a regular basis as I have done on occasion over te years. Amity Lodge No. 166 gave me a check and I bought a couple of warm meals and delivered them to a shut in brother Odd Fellow. I was supposed to buy quite a few meals so he could put them in the freezer. Something told me he didn’t have a big freezer, so I only bought two. Well, I was right so I took him the meals and told him I would come again with a couple of more. In the long run, I think this is

What’s so ODD about hiring an Odd Fellow? Not a thing that we can think of, so we started a business listing featuring services, talents, and occasional hobbies for hire of our brothers and sisters. Email your listing info to IOOF_NJ@comcast.net. You will receive
a confirmation call so any listing without a phone number will not be published. We publish every two months so listings must be received a month prior to publication. Questions? Call Beth at 609-294-0237.

I am an Odd Fellow! I believe in the Fatherhood of God, and the Brotherhood of man. I believe in Friendship, Love and Truth as basic guides to the ultimate destiny of all mankind. I believe my home, my church or temple, my lodge, a nd my community deserve my best work, my modest pride, my earnest faith, and m y deepest loyalty, as I perform my duty , to visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan" and as I work with others to build a better world, because, in spirit and in truth, I am and must always be, grateful to my Creator, faithful to my country and fraternal to my fellow-man; I am an Odd Fellow!
