Sailing to Noon
C.L. Lauder
“I really felt this book: I entered its geography, saw and smelled and moved in it, which is a tribute to its vivid intimacy.” — Siri Hustvedt
On the distant planet Aurora Saura, where your body is not your own, the good people cower in basements to avoid the scavengers plaguing the skies. Not far away, on a plateau crisp with ice, an alien overlord struggles relentlessly to keep his species whole. And in the sandstone streets of Merrocha, a young girl peddles her father’s tinctures and potions, unaware of the imminent cosmic intervention that’s about to unfold.
In a lush Caribbean setting, Sailing to Noon depicts a colorful range of characters. Despite her travels throughout the world, Chiara marvels at Canuba, where ‘magic realism’ is everyday life. Amado, her pansexual lover, immerses her in its eclectic culture, natural wonders, and buoyant sensuality. Enthralled by her island reverie, she veers off course when disaster strikes: now she must face the darker side of paradise.
Kyjta is a deft hand at administering her father’s potions, even when she shouldn’t. Her face is marked by an alien brand that sparkles like tears picking up starlight, and she’s far too busy plotting revenge to notice one very important fact.

2024 Independent Press Award Winner Editors Choice:
“A Delicate Marriage” by Margarita Barresi transports readers across the vibrant tapestry of Puerto Rico in the 1920s, a period of profound social and political upheaval following its U.S. annexation. From the opulent ballrooms of the elite to the lush green mountains and the impoverished slums, the novel vividly captures the island's contrasting realities.
"Choosing Life" by Blue Andrews "Choosing Life" by Blue Andrews chronicles his harrowing descent into depression and alcoholism and his subsequent journey towards selfdiscovery and recovery. Once the epitome of success – a charming, high-achieving individual excelling in academics, his career, and social circles – Blue outwardly embodied the American Dream. However, beneath this façade, unaddressed childhood traumas and destructive habits festered, ultimately leading to a devastating crisis.
While “A Delicate Marriage” is an historical fiction romance novel, the title reflects the complex relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States, and is educational.
Blue's raw and unflinching account poignantly portrays the insidious nature of these illnesses, alcoholism and mental health, highlighting how even the most vibrant personalities can succumb to their grip. "Choosing Life" delves beyond mere biographical details, offering a profound insight into the author's motivations, beliefs, and the underlying mindset that fueled his pursuit of success.
Isabela, a woman of privilege, sacrifices her artistic dreams to marry Marco, a charismatic revolutionary striving for social justice. As Marco's political ambitions ascend, he builds a lucrative real estate empire, grappling with the compromises necessary to navigate the island's evolving power dynamics under U.S. influence. Meanwhile, Isabela, stifled by the constraints of her traditional role, grows disillusioned with Marco's shifting priorities and the erosion of his ideals. She finds solace in the burgeoning anti-colonial movement, embarking on a clandestine path that endangers her family and forces her to confront the complexities of her own identity.
For those struggling with depression or alcoholism, "Choosing Life" serves as a beacon of hope and a roadmap for recovery. It provides crucial insights for those seeking to understand these conditions, challenging the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging empathy and compassion. The unflinching narrative of the author's struggles, including a suicide attempt, offers a message of resilience and the potential for healing. Blue candidly explores his recovery journey, incorporating valuable insights from various modalities, including naturopathy and the concept of "microgrieving."
As political violence escalates, threatening to shatter the fragile peace, Isabela and Marco face an agonizing dilemma: can their marriage, like Puerto Rico's precarious relationship with the United States, survive the tumultuous forces that threaten to tear them apart?
"Choosing Life" is for anyone directly impacted by addiction or depression, as well as those with loved ones struggling with these challenges. It illustrates how societal pressures, including the relentless pursuit of material success and the insidious influence of peer pressure, can contribute to mental health crises. By prioritizing self-knowledge and cultivating genuine inner well-being, we can begin to dismantle these harmful societal influences and reclaim our mental and emotional health.
“A Delicate Marriage” is a poignant exploration of class, oppression, and the enduring legacy of colonialism, woven through the intimate tapestry of a passionate yet ultimately fragile love story. See more at

ROADS NOT TAKEN
This novel is about commitment-a man torn between love and his perception of his professional duty. Alistair Parker becomes a journalist, reporting from dangerous locations around the world. He experiences adventure, love, and loss, but one story continuously eludes him-his own. In the end, will Alistair bury the lead, or will he manage to draw from his rich and diverse experiences to bring a sense of purpose and closure to his own life?
A DVA NCE P RA I S E a n d R EV I EWS “‘Roads Not Taken’ is a poignant exploration of the human condition, emphasizing the importance of relationships, the ethical dilemmas faced by journalists, and the enduring impact of our choices. Through Alistair’s journey, readers are invited to reflect on their own lives and the roads they have left behind. The novel’s rich historical backdrop and deeply developed characters make it a compelling read for those who appreciate thoughtful and emotionally resonant storytelling.” —Printed Word Reviews “Via the literary time machine, Terry Keenleyside crafts in Roads Not Taken, we are delivered to the harrowing centres of major 20th century war zones. These historic scenes and the media machine documenting them are vivid, palpable, and riveting. A parallel journey parachutes the reader deep down into the tender, sensitive psyche of the characters while they grow, study, love, and work in this time period not so long ago, but far enough to fascinate as to what has changed and has not changed. Keenleyside paints this world so realistically: dreamlike, film-like, fast and brilliant.” —David Tierney, Publisher, Borealis Press, Ottawa, Ontario AVAIL ABLE
