WHO CAN ENTER?

Print and audiobooks can be submitted by: • Independent publishers • University presses • Hybrid publishers • Association presses • Self-published authors If you are a big five publishing house, you must submit your books to our fall competition, NYCBigBookAward.com, which has a separate committee and entry fee.

DEADLINE APPROACHING

Outside of the big five publishing houses, any publisher or author may submit to both competitions, IndependentPressAward.com (every spring); and NYCBigBookAward.com (every fall). See webpages for complete details.

WHEN CAN I ENTER the Independent Press Award? We are on a rolling submission, approximately every two and a half months, with two hard deadlines: (1) March 2024 to August 30, 2024; (2) September 1, 2024 to December 30, 2024 All entries must be postmarked no later than December 30, 2024. This final deadline will not be extended. What if I miss the deadline? Enter our fall program NYCBigBookAward.com as we take books until August 30th. ENTRY FEE $125 per title/per category, plus $75 for any additional category

www.IndependentPressAward.com

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS Decide which books (copyright date within the past three years is recommended but not required) to enter into this year’s competition. 2 Calculate the total entry fee. Choose which categories, https://www.independentpressaward.com/categories, to enter each book into. You may enter a book into as many categories as you’d like. The fee for the first category is $125. Any additional book categories for that same book is $75 per category. • SINGLE BOOK, MULTIPLE CATEGORIES: One who enters “Book One” in Children’s Educational and Book Cover Design Childrens category, the entry fee is $125 + $75 = $200. 1

Educational and Book Cover Design Childrens category, the entry fee is $125 + $75 = $200, and “Book Two” in Mystery and New Fiction (first-time published), the entry fee is $125 + $75 = $200, so $200 + 200 = $400 in total book entry fees. 3 Download a form from this page, OR submit the entry form online on this page, https://www.independentpressaward.com/online-entry-form-1 Complete form 4 Duplicate each Entry Label if you are entering multiple categories. Publisher’s Letter

C

elebrating it’s octennial anniversary, the NYC Big Book Award had a plethora of book submissions. In particular, the quality of presses, the prodigious amount of submissions, and array of publishers made this the best year ever in my estimation.

Publishers included Atmosphere Press, Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Beaufort Books, Beyond Words Publishing, Blackstone Publishing, Brown Books Kids, Familius Publishing, Flatiron Books, Hachette Go, HarperCollins Leadership, Lyons Press, McGraw Hill, Oceanview Publishing, Old Stone Press, Rowman & Littlefield, Simon & Schuster, Thomas Nelson, Ulysses Press, Watkins Publishing, Westminster John Knox Press; and were placed among the winners and distinguished favorites. The diversity and high level publishing made this year especially noteworthy. The upshot?: the reader benefits. In the following pages, you will find the book winners & favorites. Be it biography or cookbook; audiobook to coloring book; humor to leadership; find a book in almost every category imaginable that litter the pages in this issue. Choose a category you like, and buy them all. Write a review. Share with your friend. Tell everyone you know.

Jim

Reiman Author: Negotiation Simplified:

J

im Reiman is the author of Negotiation Simplified: A Framework and Process for Understanding and Improving Negotiating Results, Winner of the 2024 Independent Press Award and the 2023 New York City Big Book Award in Audiobooks: Nonfiction. Negotiation Simplified is also a Distinguished Favorite in the 2024 Independent Press Award in the Business General Category. The author received the Nonfiction Authors Association’s Gold Award. Jim is a Negotiation Educator and Consultant, mediator and arbitrator for complex domestic and international disputes and the Principal of Reiman ADR. Prior to his roles as CEO and Chairman of public and private companies in the US, Canada, and China Jim was a commercial trial and business attorney in Chicago for nineteen years. He now travels the globe to educate and consult with senior executives, government officials and attorneys. His executive education program includes the Oxford Programme on Negotiation at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School where he imparts his expert negotiations skills in international arbitrations. In addition, he is a faculty member and program director in the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Fellowship : training/qualification programs, just to name one of the numerous associations he is affiliated with. Jim is available for speaking engagements and consultations with offices in Manhattan and Chicago.

Gabby: How would you define negotiation? Jim: Negotiation is a process and it’s a dialog. It’s a combination of both parties coming together to meet to reach a mutually acceptable result, finding common ground. The difference between a good result and a great result is the value of those things that are not critical but that are desired. Gabby: Jim, How have your joint careers as attorney and business executive equipped you with the tools necessary to be successful in this field? Jim: The essence of success in all of those endeavors is effective communication. The key to effective, successful negotiation is listening, hearing what’s being said. Being self-aware. If you have these four elements down: goal-setting, preparation, listening, being selfaware, you’re going to be an effective negotiator. Gabby: There have been a number of negotiation books out there in the market. So what makes yours unique? Jim: It’s written for an educated, somewhat sophisticated reader. What differentiates Negotiation Simplified is the framework and the analysis. The goal of negotiation and the goal of any good negotiator is to identify options. I provide you with a framework to think about and to prepare that you www.IndependentPressAward.com

can then use when you execute. That preparation results in options, which you can then use in order to get the results that you’re looking for. Gabby: You include anecdotes from colleagues around the world: CEOs, ambassadors and attorneys spanning numerous professions and industries… What do all of these skilled negotiators have in common? What can we learn from them? Jim: They’re all effective communicators. They all understand before they begin exactly where they want to end up, exactly where they want to go. They each spend a lot of time before they begin the process by preparing and learning as much as they can so that they can communicate very effectively and ascertain the values of the wants in order to achieve a great result.

tion. All of these skills are important, but the most important is goal setting. Where do you want to end up? That’s the piece that remarkably, most people give the least amount of thought to until they’re down the road.

Gabby: How would you define a successful negotiation? Is there a winner in a negotiation? Jim: Negotiation is not about winning. Negotiation is about achieving your goal. In a successful negotiation both parties achieve their goal. Gabby: Jim, which skill would you say is the absolute most essential skill to master in a negotiation. Loring Walawander This dramatic exploration of trauma, redemption, and the complexities of human relationships is set against a backdrop of poignant and often harrowing experiences. The primary characters, Chase and Tekla, journey through personal growth and forgiveness in unexpected and moving ways. Chase’s struggle with the loss of his wife, JoAnn, and his attempt to scatter her ashes in a symbolic final goodbye in the Swiss Alps provides a raw and emotional pulse. Tekla, a veteran grappling with PTSD, exposes her scars of war, and her struggle for normalcy and love amidst mental and physical trauma. Walawander’s prose is both robust and nuanced, with a delicate balancing of toughness and vulnerability. The characters and narratives skillfully intertwine personal and emotional journeys. Those who appreciate stories that explore the depths of human resilience and the painful yet transformative process of healing will find this a meaningful read. After all, forgiveness is a difficult thing.

Deeply reflective and sensitively rendered, “Whispers from the Valley of the Yak” touches on the healing power of nature and universal themes of unconditional love and forgiveness—and, most importantly, being true to oneself.

In Answering Lincoln’s Call, T.W. Harvey gives us an illustration. Based on letters written by his own forefathers, Harvey provides us a window to peek into the past and see what motivated these brave boys. In doing so, he depicts not only some of the fierce fighting that took place in the early days of the war but also of the very souls of the boys who fought in them. -Dr. Larry P. A dream-traveling dog and a time-traveling cat join forces with a group of young heroes to uncover a sinister plot that threatens the Earth’s future in this award-winning sci-fi novel that is perfect for children aged 9-12. (Book 2 coming October 2024!)

T.W. Harvey From Vicksburg to Bennett Place: The Long March to Victory relates that Captain Porter served as the aide-decamp to Brigadier General Mortimer Leggett, assisting the general as Major General Ulysses S. Grant’s Army of Tennessee moved south from Shiloh and fought in the Vicksburg and Atlanta campaigns. Once successful, the army, now under the command of Major General William Tecumseh Sherman, marched to the sea and then north through the Carolinas. Two weeks after Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Grant, Joseph Johnston surrendered to Sherman at Bennett Place in No. Carolina, effectively ending the war. Captain George Porter lived through it all. T

Psychiatry/Psychology How You Think And Feel Changes your Body: Dynamic Body Psychology Douglas Peterson

poetry

The psychology of the body provides profound insight into behavior, yet most people greatly overlook it.

Grief Touched the Sky at Night Gloria Mindock These stark, candid, and radiant poems in Gloria Mindock’s new collection give shape and space to voices lifted from the clutter and clamor that is the matrix of war. The war is upon us now, but poets forever have sung such lamentations and haunted us all too often throughout history. One thinks of Homer, Wilfred Owen, and Carolyn Forche. A fierce and generous tenderness and enviable humanity ungirds these unflinching poems. Mindock’s is the voice we need to hear at this very moment.

Your life will change when you realize that how you think and feel transforms your body tissue. Body Psychology brings to life, through descriptions and illustrations, the psychological and physical issues written on our bodies and how our thinking/feeling can change the body both immediately (such as with depression) and over time (such as when one develops a hunched back from long-held feelings and thoughts that the world is overwhelming).

Describes the failure of Republicans to confront the Left and the Democrat Party from the perspective of a conservative, America-First, traditionalist who has himself run for office. Rather than challenge the vicious Left and meet sword with sword, Republicans cowered, ran for cover, or even worse, enabled them, thus making it worse. They have won just as many elections as Democrats at the national level and far more at the state level, over the last four decades, yet the country is dismally broken, culturally, morally, and financially. The author reviews the pitiable path the Republicans have chosen, defines also the horrendous depravity of the Left, and then offers, in the final section, a direction forward for conservatives – and the country.

uthor and historian Robin Reams’ most recent novel, Aboard Blackbeard’s Queen, is the winner of the 2024 Independent Press Award and the 2023 New York City Big Book Award in Action/Adventure. Her second novel, Unlocking Blackbeard’s Skeletons, was awarded the 2024 Independent Press Award for Young Adult Fiction. Spanning across genres, Robin’s debut novel Shadow of the Mountain won the 2023 New York City Big Book Award in Christian Fiction. Robin has been creating stories since childhood. Her homeschool experience was enriched with museum visits, historic sites, and living history events. Her love of history and nature is evident in all her books. Robin resides in North Carolina.

Gabby: How did your childhood and your faith inspire you to become an author? Robin: Being able to homeschool, I learned about history. My parents would take me and my younger sister, Holly, on the living history sites. To have it come alive like that really inspired me to be able to not just see it, but to experience it. Gabby: You are a historian. You’ve been fascinated by history since you were a child. Your novels, Unlocking Blackbeard’s Skeletons and Aboard Blackbeard’s Queen take place in June 1718, and they’re all set in colonial Bath Town. Robin: Bath is a very, very small town. I mean, there’s hardly anything there. At that time period, it was the hub for everything. It was the first town, the first library for North Carolina, the first church in North Carolina, first port. The governor lived there part of the time and also the tax collector, Tobias Knight. These characters in my book were real people that helped shape our North Carolina history and really the whole eastern Coast history. The colonial times helped shape what America would have been. Gabby: What is your connection with Blackbeard? Robin:The 300th anniversary of Blackbeard’s death was in 2018. There was this onslaught of articles and things that I was reading and just absorbing. The first book, Unlocking Blackbeard’s Skeletons, I wrote on North www.IndependentPressAward.com

Carolina history. After this book was published, everybody was asking me about Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard’s famed ship. Gabby: The protagonist in Aboard Blackbeard’s Queen is a cat named Cooper. How did you arrive at the decision to speak from the perspective of a cat?

those, about six of them ended up coming back to Bath. One of them, Edward Salter, helped start the first church in North Carolina. That is such a testimony that everybody can change, everybody has that saving grace and that God will help even the pirates.

Listen to the full interview:

Robin: When I wrote Aboard Blackbeard’s Queen I was trying to do a different perspective. I decided to speak through the cat because Blackbeard actually had a cat. A lot of readers have enjoyed it because they feel Cooper is like a fly on the wall. The cat could see and hear things that Blackbeard wouldn’t say to everybody. Gabby: The protagonist in Blackbeard’s Skeletons is Lizzie, a Christian teenager who spent several months with Blackbeard and his crew.

www.thegabtalks.com

Robin: Women went through a lot during that time frame. A lot of the men were killed during the battles, so the women were running the plantations. It was a big time for women empowerment, to survive during that period. Gabby:What was the most surprising fact that you uncovered during all this research? Robin: Blackbeard was believed to be the most fearsome pirate, you know, a bloodthirsty killer. As far as I could tell from my research, there were no deaths under Blackbeard.

“There are few things of such importance as one’s own identity.”

Forever, Now Haleh Shahrzad

Emma Molloy is forced to look back on her life due to a chance encounter on a cruise ship with an old friend. Emma, the adopted daughter, has grown up alongside her naturalborn sister, Elizabeth, in Flushing, Queens, New York. As life goes on for Emma, she finds a lack of support from Tom Molloy, her father, who has obviously chosen Elizabeth as his favorite. This choice compounds into more and more problems for Emma’s life. It ends up accelerating her desire to find out about her birth mother. With the passing of Tom’s wife, Patricia; life manages to find a way to become even more difficult for Emma.

Darya’s life takes an unexpected turn when she marries a man against her better judgment, holding on to the hope of a joyful and lasting future. However, the illusion of their perfect life begins to unravel as her husband’s infidelity and deceit come to light, leaving her life and heart in pieces.
