WHEN CAN I ENTER the Independent Press Award? We are on a rolling submission, approximately every two and a half months, with two hard deadlines: (1) March 2024 to August 30, 2024; (2) September 1, 2024 to December 30, 2024 All entries must be received no later than December 30, 2024. This final deadline will not be extended. What if I miss the deadline? Enter our fall program NYCBigBookAward.com as we take books until August 30th.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS Decide which books (copyright date within the past three years is recommended but not required) to enter into this year’s competition. 2 Calculate the total entry fee. Publisher’s Letter
As I sit in 74 degree weather, excited for the book fair this weekend, I have a moment to reflect as we go to press with this issue shortly. 2024 has been an amazing year for what we did for authors, and exhilarated for what’s to come. Off a successful BookCAMP, our next one is shaping up to be far better: more experts; more topics; and more actionable information. Never talking down, but connecting on what’s possible for independent publishers and authors. Here, we spend three days with industry experts, learning, sharing and networking. This year’s event will take place on May 2-4, 2025 at the DoubleTree by Hilton, located by the Newark International Airport on 128 Frontage Road. Take a closer look at what we are offering in the centerfold of this issue. Hope you join us, more details here: https://www.ipabookcamp.com/ We’ve executed inventive ways to gain attention from readers. From NYC Times Square billboards to traditional first-time exhibits at old and new trade shows. Selling books using proven market strategies and implementing innovative, cost-saving marketing solutions. We’re attacking book buying markets from a number of different angles to get results. In 2025, we have a number of additional initiatives that will help those authors shopping a manuscript to publishers and agents to be discovered, to those existing authors that want to be reached via television to sell their books. I look forward to more results! The holiday season is a time to focus on those you love, and those who want to be a part of your life’s success. In this spirit, I encourage you to think hard about all those who have supported you, and wished you well, and take action to buy them one of our award-winning books. Maybe you’ve been thinking about them, but not planning to gift them. Take action, and be rest assured that buying them a book will make a difference. Maybe they will read it, maybe they will regift it, but nonetheless, they know that you appreciate them, and you will be remembered. So, pick out a book from the pages ahead, and start opening doors and conversations, and reconnecting. Until next issue,

Dr. Kimberly Harms Author: Are You Ready?: How to Build a Legacy to Die For
D
r. Kimberly Harms author of Are You Ready?: How to Build a Legacy to Die For was named a Distinguished Favorite in the 2024 New York City Big Book Award in the Death & Dying category. Author Dr. Kimberly Harms is an international speaker with more than 30 years of dental, grief, conflict and transitional management experience.
A Commissioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service, a Clinical Assistant Professor at Loyola University Dental School, a grief counselor, three decades as a clinical dentist in private practice with her late husband Jim in Farmington MN, a death doula, a civil mediator, a school board Chair, President of an international women’s organization, the first woman President of the Minnesota Dental Association and co-founder of 65 Eric Harms Memorial Libraries through Books for Africa in Rowanda. Kimberley has suffered many personal losses including the suicide deaths of her mother and son and the death from a broken heart of her husband Jim. Kimberley’s most important role now is as a mother to her two surviving children and grandmother to six precious grandchildren. Kimberly joins us from Minnesota.

Gabby: Are You Ready? is written from a compassionate perspective, your personal story is poignant and heartbreaking. The death of your son Eric was certainly the most difficult to read about. Can you elaborate on your story?

Kimberly: It affected my children and my husband. I was going to make sure that my kids knew they were enough. I was going to fight, kick, scream, and claw my way out of that pit because my grief just didn’t affect me alone. My message to everyone through the book is no matter what happens to you, take the effort to fight that grief. It’s a horrible place to live. So much better to live in joy. Gabby: Along your journey from dentist to grief counselor you saw that there were a lot of things that needed to be done. The Death Preppers workbook is part three in the book. It’s an invaluable tool designed to empower the readers, to prepare for the inevitable and to leave our loved ones with a legacy, not a mess. Can you explain what an emotional insurance policy is? Kimberly: We need to prepare our children emotionally for a time when we die. I spent a lot of time in that darn grief pit. I don’t want them at the bottom like I was. I would like to prepare them so that they understand that death is part of life and that my life was so enriched because of them. I want them to understand how much I love them, and to know that I want them to have a happy life.

“I really felt this book: I entered its geography, saw and smelled and moved in it, which is a tribute to its vivid intimacy.” — Siri Hustvedt
With no tree in her home, and just a dollar from her widowed mother, Melina goes out on Christmas eve to find one. She faces the cold night and many obstacles, but she doesn’t give up. With perseverance and an unexpected miracle, Melina gets her very special tree.
In a lush Caribbean setting, Sailing to Noon depicts a colorful range of characters. Despite her travels throughout the world, Chiara marvels at Canuba, where ‘magic realism’ is everyday life. Amado, her pansexual lover, immerses her in its eclectic culture, natural wonders, and buoyant sensuality. Enthralled by her island reverie, she veers off course when disaster strikes: now she must face the darker side of paradise.
We all need hope and faith. In “Melina’s Christmas Tree,” Melina offers us both.

What Not To Forgive
Countermelodies: A Memoir in Sonata Form
Loring Walawander This dramatic exploration of trauma, redemption, and the complexities of human relationships is set against a backdrop of poignant and often harrowing experiences. The primary characters, Chase and Tekla, journey through personal growth and forgiveness in unexpected and moving ways. Chase’s struggle with the loss of his wife, JoAnn, and his attempt to scatter her ashes in a symbolic final goodbye in the Swiss Alps provides a raw and emotional pulse. Tekla, a veteran grappling with PTSD, exposes her scars of war, and her struggle for normalcy and love amidst mental and physical trauma. Walawander’s prose is both robust and nuanced, with a delicate balancing of toughness and vulnerability. The characters and narratives skillfully intertwine personal and emotional journeys. Those who appreciate stories that explore the depths of human resilience and the painful yet transformative process of healing will find this a meaningful read. After all, forgiveness is a difficult thing.

From Vicksburg to Bennett Place: The Long March to Victory T.W. Harvey From Vicksburg to Bennett Place: The Long March to Victory relates that Captain Porter served as the aide-decamp to Brigadier General Mortimer Leggett, assisting the general as Major General Ulysses S. Grant’s Army of Tennessee moved south from Shiloh and fought in the Vicksburg and Atlanta campaigns. Once successful, the army, now under the command of Major General William Tecumseh Sherman, marched to the sea and then north through the Carolinas. Two weeks after Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Grant, Joseph Johnston surrendered to Sherman at Bennett Place in No. Carolina, effectively ending the war. Captain George Porter lived through it all. T

“Your Creator Matrix” is the interconnected framework that links your mind, body, and spirit on all levels (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual) with the Unified Field. When we master our stories—the deeply-held narratives and beliefs that influence all of our choices and creations— and learn how to digest our life experiences in new ways, we gain the power to choose new future timelines and manifest the wellness, abundance, and love we truly desire.

Part memoir, part toolkit, Award-winning Arts Educator and Motivational Speaker, Lane Gardner, weaves together heart-breaking tales of abuse, gripping shortstories of self-discovery and breathtaking moments of clarity as she recounts her soul-crushing early life in a fundamentalist religious cult. Creative expression became her lifeline, initially to escape the horrors of her childhood, and later to carry her safely through the healing process and back to her true self.
In this thought-provoking book, Cathleen shows us how through quantum physics and the new sciences of epigenetics, glycobiology, and nutrigenetics can support us to create optimal cellular health, digest and assimilate our old storylines, nourish ourselves at all levels for optimal wellness, and begin to operate fully as the Creator in our lives for the good of all.
This book is an invitation into her irreverent, soulful and often deeply intimate world of learning how to reclaim her brilliance, while she masterfully teaches the reader how to do the same for themselves.

Describes the failure of Republicans to confront the Left and the Democrat Party from the perspective of a conservative, America-First, traditionalist who has himself run for office. Rather than challenge the vicious Left and meet sword with sword, Republicans cowered, ran for cover, or even worse, enabled them, thus making it worse. They have won just as many elections as Democrats at the national level and far more at the state level, over the last four decades, yet the country is dismally broken, culturally, morally, and financially. The author reviews the pitiable path the Republicans have chosen, defines also the horrendous depravity of the Left, and then offers, in the final section, a direction forward for conservatives – and the country.

“Without our friends and family, we are nothing …” stood out in the GAB TALKS interview with Allen Northcutt. Speaking about his book “The Legend of Chris Moose,” published by Old Stone Press, Northcutt went on to say “we all have value to our family and friends.”
“Melina’s Christmas Tree” by Irene Sardanis, Ph.D is an aspirational read, and will inspire young ones. Young Melina’s hope was that her mother had a dollar to buy a Christmas tree. The fact is her mother had to scrounge together four quarters from the coin jar. The child’s nativity and tenacity of going to the many local retailers: the baker, the produce store, the deli, to find a Christmas tree is also very aspirational. With many visits and an overwhelming perseverance, it’s actually through an unexpected miracle that Melina gets a very special tree. Wellpaced children’s tale with clean and suitable text and attractive interior illustrations. Has a classic ‘quest’ narrative, where Melina’s determination to find a Christmas tree brings forth a heartwarming resolution. Strongly recommended to instill hope and faith in children and a perfect addition to your home or school library collection.
This Christmas story is so touching and Northcutt drove it home by saying “No matter who you are, if you search hard enough, you will find something that you can give of yourself.” This incredible lesson lands this book at the top of the heap in terms of teaching each one of us that we have value, and giving value to those around us, strikes to the core of our existence. Well-illustrated, and solidly constructed, this book will last through many reads and is guaranteed to be an annual favorite read during the Christmas Holiday Season. For a limited time, you can get his classic story for 50% OFF the cover price through Baker & Taylor at https://shop.btpubservices.com/Title/9781938462016 or by calling toll-free: 800-537-6727. Be sure to use the discount code NOBULLY50.
