WHO CAN ENTER?
Print and audiobooks can be submitted by: • Independent publishers • University presses • Hybrid publishers • Association presses • Self-published authors If you are a big five publishing house, you must submit your books to our fall competition, NYCBigBookAward.com, which has a separate committee and entry fee. Outside of the big five publishing houses, any publisher or author may submit to both competitions, IndependentPressAward.com (every spring); and NYCBigBookAward.com (every fall). See webpages for complete details.
WHEN CAN I ENTER the Independent Press Award? We are on a rolling submission, approximately every two and a half months, with two hard deadlines: (1) March 2024 to August 30, 2024; (2) September 1, 2024 to December 30, 2024 All entries must be postmarked no later than December 30, 2024. This final deadline will not be extended. What if I miss the deadline? Enter our fall program NYCBigBookAward.com as we take books until August 30th. ENTRY FEE $125 per title/per category, plus $75 for any additional category
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS Decide which books (copyright date within the past three years is recommended but not required) to enter into this year’s competition. 2 Calculate the total entry fee. Choose which categories, https://www.independentpressaward.com/categories, to enter each book into. You may enter a book into as many categories as you’d like. The fee for the first category is $125. Any additional book categories for that same book is $75 per category. • SINGLE BOOK, MULTIPLE CATEGORIES: One who enters “Book One” in Children’s Educational and Book Cover Design Childrens category, the entry fee is $125 + $75 = $200. 1
Educational and Book Cover Design Childrens category, the entry fee is $125 + $75 = $200, and “Book Two” in Mystery and New Fiction (first-time published), the entry fee is $125 + $75 = $200, so $200 + 200 = $400 in total book entry fees. 3 Download a form from this page, OR submit the entry form online on this page, https://www.independentpressaward.com/online-entry-form-1 Complete form 4 Duplicate each Entry Label if you are entering multiple categories. Etty Burke Author: Aaron The Different, Story of Courage, Belonging, and Acceptance
E
tty Burke, author of Aaron The Different, Story of Courage, Belonging, and Acceptance. has been awarded the 2024 Independent Press Award Distinguished Favorite in the Childrens: Inspirational/Motivational category. Etty is a highly accomplished Organizational Psychologist. She partners with various leaders and businesses in a plethora of industries to create and maintain inclusive and safe working environments. Etty earned her PHD in Psychology and Education from Columbia University. She is the founder of Leading with a Difference, a management consulting firm specializing in organizational development, culture, talent, leadership, and organizational structure. Aaron The Different, is Etty’s debut novel. She works and lives in Manhattan with her husband and two children.
Etty: I think that most of the people that I know have been reading it with their kids or grandchildren and teachers with students. Depending on the development level of the child, they’ll either get things or not. So it’s good to, to really have that discussion. It’s so important to really facilitate that discussion so that you really get to know what’s happening in their lives. Gabby: Aaron inspired others to change. What did he discover within himself because that was so important?
Gabby: This is a beautifully illustrated chapter book about an eight year old boy, Aaron, who lives in a country called Premium on the planet Astron.
Etty: He learns a lot through the story and through the adventure that he goes through to look internally into himself, to really be introspective, to align himself and to really utilize that courage and that self-confidence that he didn’t realize that he had.
Etty: Aaron lives in another galaxy and he is very different from the beings around him. He is round and he is green, and he thinks differently. That really leads to a lot of challenges that he has fitting into a world where everyone is tall and purple and thinks that that’s the only way to be. He goes through life trying to fit in and not being able to do so in the way he wants. On a school field trip, something happens that changes everything. Through that change, he finds his own self courage.
Gabby: How did your training as an organizational psychologist help you with this and inspire you? Etty: I spent my life looking at ways in which to create safe, respectful environments where people feel valued. As a parent this was something that would be an opportunity to help in a very small way, a small contribution to help change, change the future for the better, for our children and for ourselves.
Gabby: What flaws did you recognize in business cultures that served as your catalyst for writing a children’s book? Etty: If we want different results, let’s do things differently and let’s start focusing on our future leaders, which are children. Giving them the space and the mindset that they need so that inclusion and acceptance of differences is just the way things are.
Listen to the entire interview on https://www.thegabtalks.com/. To learn more about Etty Burk and purchase Aaron The Different, Story of Courage, Belonging, and Acceptance visit https://ettyburk.com/.
Gabby: Do you believe that changing the mindset in children will really help change the world and the workplace?
Listen to the full interview:
Etty: It’s going to change our society. Giving children the skill set will allow them to do things better than we do now. If you look at what’s happening across the world in our recent histories, we see that there’s a lot of bullying, there’s a lot of bias, and we see the negative impact it has on individuals and on people in general. Gabby: You include an epilog of Aaron’s new powerful life, a glossary of terms and feeling and thinking questions. It’s such an interactive book. Though it’s a children’s book, there are lots of invaluable teaching moments for adults.

An inspirational story about taking a chance, following your vision, and thriving in one of the US’s wildest emerging industries, Unconventional profiles Jamie Andrea Garzot’s journey as one of California’s legal cannabis industry pioneers.
In Answering Lincoln’s Call, T.W. Harvey gives us an illustration. Based on letters written by his own forefathers, Harvey provides us a window to peek into the past and see what motivated these brave boys. In doing so, he depicts not only some of the fierce fighting that took place in the early days of the war but also of the very souls of the boys who fought in them. -Dr. Larry P. Arnn, PhD, President, Hillsdale College
Answering Lincoln’s Call: War in America is a true story originally told in the same 180 letters written by my great-grandfather Lieutenant Thomas S. Armstrong about his experiences in the Civil War that were the basis for Seeing the Elephant.
In this inspirational memoir, Garzot describes her trajectory from a cannabis retail rookie navigating an unregulated market to a cannabis authority.

Miller’s Review of Critical Vaccine Studies:
Morgan Baker
400 Important Scientific Papers Summarized for Parents and Researchers
A memoir about reinventing yourself, learning how to handle loss, and emerging from depression. During her older daughter’s last year of high school, the family takes on an adventure of breeding their kind and gentle Portuguese Water Dog, Spray, and raising her ten puppies. They find loving homes for nine of the pups, and keep one, Ezzie. At the end of the year, Maggie, Morgan’s oldest, heads off for her own adventure at college. All these goodbyes don’t sit well with Morgan and she falls into a depression.
by Neil Z. Miller The most significant vaccine research summarized. Many positive reviews. 80,000 copies sold! “Should be required reading for every doctor and parent.” —David Brownstein, MD
What she learns from climbing out of the depression is that life continually changes. Her dogs and children teach her lessons on living in the moment and embracing change, instead of running from it. Morgan’s identity shifts during the years after her kids leave the house.
