PUBLISHER’S LETTER
W
e all want to be better writers. There are many ways to improve our writing skills, but one of the most important is to keep an open mind, learn from everyone, and be inquisitive. This issue brings over 200 MFA programs across America to consider. There are both full and low residency programs listed, and a few online options. PWR has included almost 60 programs that are fully funded, and almost every program is partially funded. In addition, we’ve included 17 fall book shows, and given specific examples of how you as an author can benefit. Opportunities abound for places to learn. Here are a few suggestions for whatever path you choose. KEEP AN OPEN MIND: Be willing to consider new ideas and perspectives, even if they are different from your own, as new ideas will challenge you. Being open to learning, and being willing to change your mind if presented with new evidence, will enlighten you or make your convictions stronger. Find your inner voice and make it stronger. LEARN FROM EVERYONE: Knowing that there is not one approach to writing, you can expand your creativity and be more innovative with your solution-solving skills if you consider how others write. This does not mean becoming them, it means take what works for you from them to help hone your craft. Be open to constructive criticism, be willing to experiment with different techniques, and be true to yourself. BE INQUISITIVE: Be curious, ask questions, try to understand the why and how. Being inquisitive can help you to develop your creative thinking skills. This is because it encourages you to look at things from different perspectives and to think about new possibilities. In addition to these general tips, here are a few specific things you can do to become a better writer: • Read widely. Read books, articles, and essays by a variety of authors. Pay attention to the way they use language, structure their sentences, and develop their ideas. • Write regularly. The more you write, the better you will become at it. Set aside some time each day to write, even if it’s just for a few minutes. • Get feedback from others. Ask a friend, family member, or writing teacher to read your work and give you feedback. This can be invaluable in helping you to identify areas where you can improve. • Take a writing class or workshop. This can be a great way to learn new techniques and get feedback from experienced writers. • Join a writing group or attend a book fair. This is a great way to connect with other writers and to get feedback on your work. Becoming a better writer takes time and effort, but it is an achievable goal. By following these tips, you can improve your writing skills and become a more effective communicator. No matter how you choose to gain your education, the benefits are clear. Education is an investment in yourself that will pay off for a lifetime.
