Instant Boiling Water
From the editor One of the themes of this edition is energy efficiency at work and in the home. We profile two buildings in Australia that have been developed with energy efficiency as a top priority. Land Victoria in Melbourne, Victoria is the first office building in that state to achieve a 5 star energy rating for its fit out. The Research House in Rockhampton, Queensland is a Queensland Government initiative to promote sustainable housing to the housing industry and consumers. Zip is proud to be associated with both of these developments. Each one has installed Zip boiling water heaters in their kitchens, Zip HydroTap and Hydroboil at Land Victoria and Zip HydroTap in the Research House. Energy efficiency is a key consideration in the design and development of Zip instant boiling water heaters. Engineers in our Research and Development Department are constantly striving for new ways to develop even more energy efficient and environmentally friendly products. As part of these activities, Zip has recently completed an independently audited research project that measured the energy efficiency of Zip boiling water heaters against kettles and urns and also compared them with competitive offerings. These tests were complemented by additional independent research undertaken by the CSIRO Hydraulics laboratory in Sydney. The results of these tests are the subject of one of the articles in this edition and show how energy efficient Zip instant boiling water heaters are when compared with traditional appliances and under-insulated or under-performing heaters. We also bring you news of some of the recent successes that Ziip has achieved across a range of industries worldwide. And from an interior design perspective, Colin Kippax, a leading kitchen consultant, who knows the benefits of having instant boiling water in the contemporary kitchen, has some interesting advice for anyone who is building or renovating.
Zip at home in Five Star Energy Rated office Office buildings have traditionally been great guzzlers of energy through over-dependence on air-conditioning and artificial lighting. These days, though, they are much more energy conscious. One man who knows is Jay Panditharatne who has been in energy management for thirteen years. He’s actively involved with the Victorian Sustainable Energy Authority and runs the engineering services for CB Richard Ellis, a large property management group. Jay points out that the main energy consumers in a building are the mechanical services and lighting. So, the refurbishment and upgrading of Marland House is "behind-the-scenes". Here, the major tenant is Land Victoria which recently consolidated its staffing by bringing together more than 600 people from different locations in Melbourne. Jay’s job, he says, is "to pre-empt on behalf of the tenants – it’s a fine balancing act because, without the tenants, the building is useless." In the case of the Land Victoria, it is the first office tenancy in Victoria to receive a five star energy rating in a fit-out designed by architects Robert Peck von Hartel Trethowan.

Great use is made of natural light with roller sunscreen blinds providing thermal control. Lights in meeting rooms are controlled by sensors rather than switches and Zip plays its part in the break-out and common area kitchens with the energy-efficient HydroTap providing instant boiling and chilled filtered water. On the amenities side, says Jay, "it is pretty well all you could want from a commercial fit-out". 02
Energy Efficiency – No Sweat! Zip saves time and energy in workplace kitchens James Birch Marketing Director Zip Heaters (Australia) Pty Ltd j.birch@zipindustries.com
Workplace kitchens need to be efficient, not just because they impact on productivity, but also because they need to comply with new requirements for energy conservation. Traditional urns may last a long time, but they cost a lot to run and waste a lot of energy. Also, many instant boiling water heaters are under-insulated, leading to further energy losses. Comparisons from independent energy tests reveal that Zip systems provide significant energy savings. But they also save time. Think how much time is wasted standing around waiting for the kettle to boil and compare that with a Zip Hydroboil or HydroTap offering instant boiling water. In addition, Zip heaters are a compact alternative to unnecessarily large and expensive heaters.
Replace time-wasting kettles. Nothing wastes work-place kitchen time like a kettle. An average kettle takes over five minutes to boil. So everyone finds ways to fill in the time they waste waiting for kettles to boil, and looks for excuses for delays in making tea and coffee for visitors and colleagues attending a meeting. Time to make tea

Replace under-insulated heaters. Energy tests show that cheap instant boiling water heaters are under-insulated so they waste energy and are expensive to run. Replacing these heaters with Zip Hydroboil or Zip Autoboil boiling water heaters must lead to immediate reductions in power wastage and running costs. Power consumption on standby

Sustainable Housing Success Zip supports a Government initiative to promote sustainable housing through the multi-award winning Research House project. The Research House project, an initiative of the Queensland Government in Australia has involved the design and construction of a family home in Rockhampton, based on the elements of Smart Housing-Affordibility; Energy Efficiency; Universal Housing Design and Safety and Security. Through Zip's sponsorship, the house incorporates a Zip HydroTap instant boiling and chilled filtered water dispenser as well as Horne thermostatic mixing valves and Mifab access panels. Zip is one of 65 organisations supporting this unique project. Queensland Minister for Public Works, Minister for Housing, and Member for Rockhampton, Robert Schwarten, clearly recognises the value of this unqualified industry support, saying "The project has established partnerships with sponsors and research partners in the private and public sectors. Their support and contributions enhance research while promoting sustainable regional development through collaborative decision-making, job creation and education". Zip Heaters Marketing Director, James Birch, explains Zip's enthusiasm for the project: " An ongoing objective of Zip’s research and development activities is to develop new products that are not only innovative, but energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Zip is delighted to be able to sponsor and participate in this exciting sustainable housing project." The inclusion of Zip products addresses an important design aspect and a key Smart Housing principle - safety. The Zip HydroTap installed in the kitchen of the Research House delivers instant boiling water safely by the incorporation of a child-proof safety lock that prevents accidental use, with the added benefits of efficiency and convenience. And thermostatic mixing valves supplied by Zip are used to regulate water temperature to the bath-
room, ensuite and toilet hand basin and reduce the likelihood of scalding, particularly to children. The Zip HydroTap proved very popular during the public display period which spanned the hot Queensland summer. Over 4000 visitors, including Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie, as well as 500 thirsty children from schools in the Rockhampton region certainly put the HydroTap through its paces.

Aside from the opportunity to support key housing research, involvement in the Research House project provides a unique opportunity for Zip to receive feedback on its products in everyday use. A family will now occupy the house for the next two years and everyday usage data will be collected and made available to Zip over that period. The Research House was recognised in the Queensland Master Builders Association Housing and Construction Awards 2002 in the category of 'Excellence in Energy Aware Homes', and recently at a national level at the Housing Industry Association Greensmart Awards 2002 by a 'Special Judges Award' in the 'Smart Housing' category. More information on the Research House project or the Zip products installed can be obtained by visiting the website at www. housing.qld.gov.au/researchhouse or www. zipheaters.com

It’s a Lifestyle Thing! Colin Kippax of Sydney’s A la Carte Design runs a one-stop shop. He not only designs the kitchens, but also runs a showroom where clients can see first-hand the kind of products on offer.
"Our approach," he says, "is to give our clients all the knowledge we can so that they are able to make informed decisions about their kitchens." And frequently the decision is to do with filtered water. As Kippax (pictured using the HydroTap) points out "people often come in wanting icemaking facilities and filtered chilled water and their solution is one of those huge, two-door American fridges." It is not a solution Kippax favours – "they’re odd sizes and depths and they’re very difficult to work around." When he questions his clients, they often don’t really need the ice dispenser. It’s the filtered chilled water they want. So, Colin Kippax suggests another solution that is more functional and allows for a much better design – a Zip Hydrotap. "It is," he says, "a lifestyle issue, not a luxury issue." Paying a fortune for a fridge that delivers filtered chilled water may not be the right choice, he points out. “You should consider a standard fridge and a Zip HydroTap that enables you to have the convenience of filtered chilled water and instant boiling water from the same tap and near to where you cook.”
"Clients are going to buy filtered water, anyway," says Kippax, "because they don’t want to drink tap water. It’s a straight lifestyle issue – good quality drinking water. So the upgrade to chilled filtered water is not a big step. Then the next logical step is to go to boiling water."
Colin Kippax suggests another solution that is more functional and allows for a much better design – a Zip Hydrotap. "It is," he says, "a lifestyle issue, not a luxury issue." Apart from good quality drinking water, the Zip HydroTap also eliminates the need for a bench top kettle. This appeals to the modern taste for a clean, crisp style without clutter. "So, there’s a marketable lifestyle thing that we can get across to clients," says Kippax. "From my perspective it makes life easier as a designer. Not only does it give you a cleanerlooking kitchen, it works better."
HydroTap wins prestigious UK award for product innovation David Hill, Managing Director of Hills, when making the presentation to Zip Director and General Manager Kevin Samuel, remarked, "We chose this product because it is a totally new and innovative idea that will allow us to offer quality, groundbreaking solutions to our clients."
