HELLO!

VINTAGE MODERN

As Habitus Guest Editor, it’s really about community and how we all weave together to create a brilliant industry. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, what discipline you’re working in – the connectivity and support of one another really feeds into a great evolution of design.

The theme of Vintage Modern gets a bit of a stretch to include projects and practices by colleagues I admire, and some that have randomly caught my attention. Checkmate by YSG is definitely a mate (p. 172), while Jakob Sprenger is someone I haven’t met, but I was taken by his Paris Aesop store (p. 164). Designers like Wonderwall have been around from Bathing Ape to Not A Hotel (p. 190), and Robert Simeoni is a Melbourne icon (p. 134). Conversely, monotrum are newish, but definitely interesting (p. 182).

I’m always taken back when I travel and meet people, share ideas and become inspired by our conversations and interactions. So, it’s the same sort of mix with features and profiles: some I know, some I know of, and some I have met recently in Milan, but all of them are reckless. Uchronia is wild ride of colour (p. 90), others like WKND Lab are twisting cultural decoration into something new, (p. 74). Florian Wild is a landscape architect I have been working with for years who always thinks outside the normal garden ideas, (p. 78). Similarly, Nicholas & Alistair are vintage design curators who have been the source for some incredible design pieces that now populate many of the Flack Studio interiors (p 102).

The artists, furniture makers, designers and craftspeople are just as interesting and it’s good to see them on a pedestal (p. 21). This is also the Winnings x Habitus House of the Year issue (p. 49), with a shortlist of 20 great houses and homes from the Indo-Pacific.

“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”

GILLIAN SERISIER

Having founded his eponymous studio a decade ago, David quickly achieved acclaim for an iconoclastic approach to interiors marked by material, formal and spatial experimentation. A three-time Architectural Digest ‘AD ’ laureate, he grew up in rural Australia, the son of a builder. He credits this background for an approach which, despite its evident glamour, is anchored in honesty, integrity and clarity of vision. All qualities he imbues into a vibrant studio of architects, interior and product designers based in a former electroplating workshop in Melbourne’s inner-city Fitzroy district.

In her role as Editor of Habitus Magazine, Gillian brings a twentyyear oeuvre of design writing to the publication. Focusing on architecture, design, art and interior design, her breadth of knowledge is expansive and generous with all genres and styles regarded for their own merit. For the highly collectable series of Six, Gillian is working with the best designers in the Indopaci fic region to create content that is engaged and varied. Moreover, when seen through the lens of her Guest Editors, the selections and directions shaping each issue of Habitus are always a surprise.

CORRUGATED HOUSE #

George is one of Australia’s most beloved writers. With a twentyyear portfolio across fashion and design, her articles covering the Australian fashion industry and the international collections in Milan, Paris, New York and London have been a revelation of sparkling wit. Her work across design and architecture is similarly insightful, with a keen eye for what does and doesn’t work, plus a fearless approach to quizzing her subjects, as both their design and intent come under her gaze. We are delighted to have her on board as she gets to the heart of Guest Editor David Flack’s Tamarama project.

Veeral is a Melbourne-based architectural photographer and fi lmmaker from New Zealand. With a background in wireless communications engineering, the transition to photography was prompted by a mid-life career crisis that saw him longing to do more than just software development. Via his own ‘Walter Mitty’ moment, he found himself photographing several editions of the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France in Europe. At home in Melbourne, Veeral was surrounded by the architecture of new and old. Starting with niche projects, his eyes went to a new avenue of imagination that was both technical and creative. From here, photographing architecture became his forte.
